4 out of 5 stars Bill Conti Karate Kid collection released.......2007-03-31

I'm such a fan of the Karate Kid films -- at least the first two -- that I'll take anything I can get. This is a great set that reminds me of the film, but it's missing Bill Conti's music. However, Varese Sarabande has just released (March '07) a 4-CD set containing Bill Conti's score to ALL FOUR Karate Kid movies. It's a limited press run of 2000 copies, available only on their website. It's fantastic. Now all I want is a CD of the Karate Kid Part II soundtrack that I had on cassette, containing Dennis DeYoung, New Edition, Carly Simon, et al. -- that would make me deleriously happy.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it........2007-02-13

The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars instead of 1 is "Moment of Truth" by Survivor. It's a song that bears repeated listening, unlike the others, which are throwaways. You can download "Moment of Truth" on iTunes or just about any music download site, so I wouldn't even bother getting this.

It's a shame that Bill Conti wouldn't release his orchestral music, with the Pan Flute and string-sounding instruments, in a wide release. That's the heart and soul of the film, in my opinion. I checked on the Varese Sarabande website, and a limited edition of the Bill Conti score for all 4 movies in one 4-disc set is indeed available; exclusively through them, of course. There's a limited supply, and the sets are about $45 each. I don't know why they couldn't have the soundtrack for each movie available separately, and why they had to make it a limited supply. Anyway, if you want the scores for just the first 2 movies (minus a couple of the tracks on the "official" releases), for much cheaper, just copy and past the following into Google; you'll come across some sites that have it, (legally as far as I know): Karate Kid Score "Bill Conti" MP3. I unfortunately can't post the URL per the Amazon review guidelines.

2 out of 5 stars Missing Zamfir Music.......2006-06-15

This would have been the only reason I would have bought it, but it's missing from the soundtrack. Luckily I found this track on the Kill Bill Vol 1 album.

4 out of 5 stars Songs aren't too bad..........2006-03-25

The songs on this are okay. It was really fun to hear the music from an awesome 80's movie!

2 out of 5 stars I bought this soundtrack for just one song..........2005-12-21

What's the 4-1-1?
If you were just a kid in 1984, chances are you loved this movie. It was your typical `fish out of water' story. Young Daniel (Ralph Macchio) moves to a new neighborhood and gets picked on by the high school bullies. At the same time he's fallen for the most popular girl in school (Elizabeth Shue), who just happens to be connected to the main bully Johnny that keeps kicking the crap out of Daniel. All the bullies belong to the local karate studio the Cobra Kai's. They train for `no mercy' and that's just what they give to Daniel. Eventually his landlord Mr. Miyagi takes him under his wing.

Sure, the first thing you start to think is, he's clearly going to teach him karate so he can fight back. I mean he is from Okinawa and all. Nope, Mr. Miyagi makes Daniel wax his car, sand his deck, paint his house, and paint his fence. However, there's a plot twist. All these hard labor tasks are actually karate blocks. Once that is discovered (and all of Mr. Miyagi's house chores are completed) Daniel begins training for the big karate tournament. Ironically enough he makes it to the finals to face Johnny. Just when you think he's down and out, Daniel breaks out the secret `crane technique' to win the match, get the girl, and earn Johnny's respect.

As for the soundtrack, I'm not sure that The Flirts and Jan & Dean were relevant at the time, but their song "Bop Bop (on the Beach) made it to the soundtrack. It's been a while since I've seen the movie, but this probably played during the beach party scene. Why they included this instead of "Cruel Summer", I'll never know. What's an overcoming the odds movie without a song by Survivor? The Moment of Truth is more keyboard oriented than their past guitar heavy anthems. The song builds to an over-the-top chorus. "No Shelter" by Broken Edge adds a little new wave sound to things with its muted riffs and driving keys.

"Young Hearts" by Commuter is a catchy power-pop love theme. You know, the kind of song that plays in the background of a montage where the guy and girl are shown doing things together. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that Gang of Four is a punk band. 1984 must have been the year they sold out because "Desire" is more of a pop song. I guess their could be another Gang of Four. Finally, the big tournament anthem "You're the Best" by Joe `Bean' Eposito rounds out the soundtrack. I love the songs energy and emotion, but damn it's short.

The Verdict
I bought this soundtrack for just one song ("You're the Best"), hoping that the other songs would be just as good. I was wrong. There were one or two that I liked, but the rest were just crap. I didn't even recall most of them from the movie.

Did You Know?
The name `The Karate Kid' was actually a character in a D.C. Comic book series. Special permission was given by D.C. for the term to be used. Ralph Macchio passed on the role of Marty McFly in Back to the Future.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent, airy and effin' awesome.......2003-01-04

Laying in bed and reading Breakfast at Tiffany's or sitting in your friend's cold duplex this album always satisfies. In this album the band quietly steps away from the subtle punk that can be heard on previous albums. I'd say that I enjoy this album more than Some Boots, as well as the other albums. You can't help but feel intellectual and lost with this cd in hearing distance. Definitely pick this one up, and listen to it everyday.

5 out of 5 stars an album you will never get bored of.......2001-08-20

This is one of these amazing albums which you discover over a couple of hearings and which grows on you to a point that you could never get bored of it. The tunes are all finely composed, with subtle complexity, allowing all instruments enough space to be heard and enjoyed. It has to be mentioned here that the album has the crispest, most delightful sound (the vintage (Leedy) drumkit, with that distinctive Gretsch Broadcaster snare sound, the perfect bass and guitar sound), due not only to the instruments themselves but also to some great sound engineering work. Being a long time Karate fan, and having listened to them since their first album, I must say that I am delighted to hear Karate evolve in such a way and that I strongly recommend giving this CD your full attention; and if you like it, work your way back to "The Bed Is In The Ocean", "In Place of Real Insight", and their first album "Karate".

4 out of 5 stars Quiet, Jazzy, Intense.......2001-05-23

If you've seen Karate live, especially in post 2000 shows, you'll have noticed that there seems to be a lot of improvization happening, even occasionally drifting into avant-garde. On several occasions, I have confronted them with this point after shows, and have found that all of these "improv" sections are actually all planned out, like a Rush concert.

I would assume the same for "Unsolved" on which almost every song has some sort of jazzy guitar solo by Geoff Farina. But bear in mind that this is not a new direction for Karate, it has simply been exploited far more on this album.

Generally, the songs are slower, some of them swing, there are a couple of true rockers ("Sever" is as impressive on album as it is live) but all in all less yelling and a more conversational tone to the lyrics. Confusingly, there are also some delay/feedback Thurston Moorish soundcapes in many of these songs, which are often coupled with some fancy drum work. And speaking of fancy drum work, check out the tension/release coda of the album, the 15 minute "This Day Next Year" which next to "Diazapam" from The Bed Is In The Ocean is one of my favorite Karate songs.

One last thing: The sounds on this album are all crisper than crisp, which goes against the scratchy indie-rock aesthetic. Another rumor I heard was that G. Farina, unsatisfied with his guitar sound both live and in studio, took some time off from recording and touring to study the mechanics and electronics of amplifiers, so that he could better fine-tune his sound. The result: Unsolved is perhaps the best mixed album I have ever heard, though some might hear it and claim it adds to this albums supposed wimpyness. Well, this album has its dull moments, but all and all it is an enthralling album.

5 out of 5 stars An unarmed assualt on the world of music..........2001-04-15

This could well turn out to be one of my favourite albums of all time. There's simply not one weak track on the whole album. The three of them seem to gel perfectly together. I'm not going to pigeonhole the style as I think it should be heard on it's own merits, regardless of which vogue of music you are into. This is as timeless as jazz, to which it most closely resembles. Oops! I still however, havn't got even close to understanding the lyrics yet, and I can add that for me anyway, it took many listenings to fully appreciate it overall. Every instrument seems to be playing independent of each other, and yet, in perfect harmony with the others. Please make this album known to others as it rightly deserves. I give this a rating only because i'm required to.., I think that the words should be read first, and not the rating.

5 out of 5 stars talented indie rock musicians..........2001-03-27

Karate is tight. Geoffs lyrics are awesome. Don't expect punk, this is jazzy rock, pretty mellow. The best way to describe it is like jazzy- Slint.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Karate Kid Soundtrack Set.......2007-05-15

NOTE: This is only a review of Disc One.

I just purchased this CD set from the manufacturer and have to say it is a superb packaged limited edition set. Not only do you get the original The Karate Kid soundtrack (that was NEVER released--what a travesty), but you get The Karate Kid II, III and IV soundtracks as well (all unreleased as well), all composed and conducted by music genious, Bill Conti. For over two decades, fans of the music score had to settle for the only soundtrack out there, the one with all the songs from the movie. That isn't a music score or soundtrack. The songs in the movie were alright, but nothing was more memorable that the actual background music. (Producers of the Top Gun soundtrack--songs only--should take note.) The packaging is nice (a box with a cd case that has 4 cd's and a booklet on the making of the soundtracks). The sound quality is great (they definately did not rush to get it out like with some). So far I have only listened to the first cd (The Karate Kid) and have to say I was immediately wisked away to 1984. Whether it is the opening theme that is used in the cross-country drive with Daniel and his mother, that echoes the main Karate Kid theme, or the mystical themes played for Mr. Miyagi, or the action theme such as tracts 3 and 21, Bill Conti's music comes through just as pleasing as it did over 20 years ago. Of particular interest in tract 3 (which is when Daniel is being chased while on a bicycle--very solid action type tract), tracts 12 and 18 (which feature the soft love theme for Daniel and Ali), tract 17 (featuring the highly instrumental training montage scene with Daniel), and tract 21 (which has the always memorable final kick by Daniel and his win at the tournament). Tract 11 is interesting, as it is listed as a DEMO, but I swear I remember this vocal version in the actual movie. The track listing for Disc One is as follows:

    Disc One (35:38)

    The Karate Kid (1984)

    1. Main Title (3:30)
    2. Fight Nite (2:01)
    3. Bumpy Ride (1:37)

    9. On To Miyagi's (1:33)

    19. Japanese Hand Clap (:40)
    20. No Mercy (:23)
    21. Daniel's Moment Of Truth (1:52)

Overall, it is a great CD and collection. When I listen to the rest of the cd's, I will post more. If you are a Karate Kid fan, this is the set for you!

5 out of 5 stars music not only for your ears.......2003-12-20

id have to say karate is one if not the best band i have listend to ,especially this thier debut album. its a little harder than thier newer ones but if you are looking for a band that translates thier emotions through thier instruments this is the one. hands down a strieght forward and great album!

4 out of 5 stars Even if they are tagged as emo, Karate still rocks........2002-10-10

With emo being the big buzz word in the music industry these days, I'm suprised Karate hasn't hit something big yet. Wait scratch that, I'm not suprised. Karate has nothing to offer to popular music fans(lacking catchy riffs and blatatant lyrics). No, if Karate is like any band around today, they would be closest to And You'll Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. Except Karate has been around longer and I like Karate more(this is not to underscore Trail, because I've grown fond of them as well).

The one thing that struck me first while listening to this CD(and all subsequent CD of their's) is the general high quality of musicianship on this CD. Everyone plays with an intense understanding of their instruments(bass, guitar, drums, and vocals too). Intense is also a good noun to discribe this album. Sure, it plays to the same soft/loud dynamic that most bands of this ilk do, but Karate manages to do it with more potentcy emotion than most "emo" bands. Lyrically, its opaque and certainly a bit hard to discifer but certainly that part of the reason this CD demands to be listened to repeatedly. It sheds a new layer every time you listen to it.

While its not their best or most focused album(my favorite is Unsolved or Bed Is In The Ocean), they have yet to release an album with the emotional intensity and liveliness of their stunning debut. Indie rock fans will devour this.

5 out of 5 stars Tokyo Rose Discovery........2000-02-24

Never knew about Karate until I saw them open (for a band I can't even remember) in a small club in the basement of a small japanese food restaurant in a small city about three years ago. Made my boyfriend go buy this CD from their small card table. Fanstastic live performance, groovable recording -- I love this band. Lead singer has a normal *human* voice that kind of floats on top of, rather than blending with, the music. Really good effect.

5 out of 5 stars catch on everywhere.......2007-06-02

I bought this CD after seeing the Catch on Everywhere video on YouTube. All the songs in the album work well together - they don't feel unrelated or disconnected from each other; It's very energetic, funny and fun - really great if you're doing something mundane or just want to be put into a good mood. It's my favorite album of theirs, and possibly my favorite album ever (I've listened to it a lot and never get tired of it - it always makes me happy). It compliments their last album, Now Is the Time, well, but has a different feel that I wasn't sure about when I first started listening. It very quickly grew on me and I was quickly convinced of this album's über awesomeness and was glad I bought it.

I really want to see the song Polysics or Die (the song) performed live - it would be so great, and I think the song's purpose was for live performances (mostly I want to see an audience yelling "or die or die or die or die!").

Worth the price of the import if you're a Polysics fan (though you might want to get it from the amazon market place - I got mine for only $30 - it seems steep but I've enjoy it a lot, so I think it was worth it; if you're not sure, just check out some of their songs on YouTube or wait for the US release).

    4 out of 5 stars Goofy fun........2006-08-07

Look at the album art... look that the band name... check out the album's title. What would you expect? It's nothing earth-shattering or breathtaking, but it's a hell of a lot of fun and you're not going to hear much like it. They're aXe (Or Arcade Edge) and sound like a mix of post-hardcore and 8-bit arcade. Really.

With lyrics like "We always think we will find a secret code that will fix everything," you're not quite sure if they're singing about arcade games or deep metaphores for life.

So this album's very cool, just don't expect anything too incredible out of it... every track is awesome, minus "Scenes Rushing By" That's Karate High School attempting at a slow song. And fails miserably. I've heard it once, and I swear I'll never listen to it again. But beyond that, there's "Sweep the Leg" with lyrics like "THERE IS NO PAIN IN MY DOJO!!!" screamed right in the begining of the song...

4 out of 5 stars A great mix of effects, riffs, and melody.......2006-03-22

I'm starting to dig this new trend of mixing hard rock with sounds from 8-bit and 16-bit video games. The last one I heard was from a hardcore band, but Karate High School is by far more melodic, thus making for a more enjoyable experience. I died laughing when they quoted the Cobra Kai dojo motto from Karate Kid in the song "Sweep the Leg." That's a great track. As for the rest; a great mix of effects, riffs, and melody.

5 out of 5 stars Next Logical Progression from Unsolved?.......2005-07-15

While it may not seem like an evolution from the mature development of Unsolved, Some Boots has the feel of an album that grows on you more and more after each listen. At 58 minutes for 9 songs, there are some epics on here, but there isn't the same solo-wanking of their Cancel/Sing EP that some people may have a problem with (I certainly did not mind a couple of jams). With Some Boots, I don't think they evolved (nor devolved) from Unsolved; it's Karate going in a different direction, just as from Some Boots to Pockets they did not progress, while they more or less honed their signature sound, which is not a bad thing since next to no bands sound remotely like them (If they churned out 6 more "Pockets" no band would even near touch them, still). The lyrics in Some Boots aren't my favorite (that would go to one of their earlier works), but they achieve the same pretentious-but-not-trying-to-be feeling as all of Karate's later albums.

There are the jazzy solos of "Ice or Ground?" and "Original Spies", to the Fugazi-meets-Joe Pass of songs such as "In Hundreds". Also, there's the token quiet, passive album closer of "Remain Relaxed" that Karate has become known for. Overall, songs such as "In Hundreds" bring me back to the days of "In Place of Real Insight", with the wall of noise and sense of urgency in Farina's voice that I haven't heard since their more raw, emotional years. Whereas Unsolved concentrated more on mellow, jazzy leads, "In Hundreds" fights with you right from the opening dissonant riffs, trying to go in 30 different directions. "South" is the most jazzy piece, with its haunting bass line during the solo, and is a song that many will thing is struggling for ideas and/or doesn't go anywhere, but that is exactly what Farina and the band is not concerned about on this record. Whereas Unsolved was built around no meandering/exploration, Some Boots is constantly documenting their search for a progression from Unsolved.

Overall, this is a very strong release in the Karate catalog, and features a lot of Karate material. If you're into the more raw and youthful, check out their s/t or "In Place of Real Insight". However, if you enjoy a little Mingus and Phish, with a tint of Pavement and Fugazi, this might be the record you are searching for. Excellent.

3 out of 5 stars Trail blazin', ya'll........2002-10-16

Hot damn! Karate keeps evolving their style completly oblivious to current music trends or any demands of their fans. The press for this album said it was going to blend and alternate bertween styles "like a good mixtape" (which inaccurate, thank god). More of the groovy jazz banter and vivid lyrics found on Unsolved, but with a bit of a punch at times. I put this on for one of my friends and he described it as "sexy." If your Advanced Jazz Theory teacher dug Fugazi he's be in a band like this. Reccomened for 20-somethings who read E. Annie Proulx, music majors, and Geoff Farina's wife.

... by Karate. More upbeat than "Unsolved" but still retaining the jazzy overtones. More rockin' goin on too. Could be my fav Karate album so far...

5 out of 5 stars A Must. Audio Karate Rocks!.......2006-02-05

Audio Karate is one of the best bands out right now, and why everyone has yet to discover them is F****N amazing. All their songs are great. Once you start to listen to this albulm you won't be able to stop listening to it. Listen to Jesus is Alive and Well in Mexico, to rock out, and then listen to Maria to slow it, while still rocking, well stop ready and buy already, no regrets.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome album.......2005-10-17

This albums is awesome, all songs are great, not one song slows down the album. Space Camp was a great listen, but this album really shows how much they improved as artist. I seriously don't understand why the masses haven't found this gem. Particular favorites are Jesus is live and well in mexico, aim to please, hey Maria, but all songs are great. Go have a listen to Jesus is live and well in Mexico and then buy the album. Your money will be well spent.

    5 out of 5 stars A great Follow up.......2004-07-29

I was very excited to hear that audio karate had a new release. Their previous album 'space camp' was an excellent mix of great guitar work and great emotion filled vocals which left other bands of its genre far behind. On the new record we find the same, if not more, creativity behind the guitar parts. And vocalist Art actually seems to scream a lot more on this album, yet the record sounds just as melodic as Space Camp. There is a slight change of style however, they took a step away from their pop punk intirior and replaced it with more emotionally charged breakdown parts. At first the record seems a little slower and is harder to get into then Space Camp was. But after 2 or 3 listens this record proves itself to be more inspiring and original then Space Camp.

5 out of 5 stars Audio K does it again, not suprisingly........2004-06-21

What can I say, as an Audio Karate fan? This is definitely a change from Space Camp. Their sound has evolved, not so much in the sense as matured, but it is something different. They still have the 'fuzzy' Stratocaster sound we all got used to, with some killer riffs and screaming vocals. But the stuff they've released is a little heavier, maybe making them more classifiable as hardcore punk, but it still holds true to their melodical roots.

5 out of 5 stars Audio Karate Is GOD.......2004-06-01

Audio Karate has done it once again, pulling off yet another great release. "Lady Melody" is a bit more 'harder' than Space Camp was, but trust me, it sounds so much better. All the songs are great and sound terrific, not one slummy boring song at all on this album. Every single track has it's own different kind of style, especially "Hey Maria" which is a beautifully done slow song. The lyrics are amazing too, Audio Karate really have matured a lot since their last album. This is a MUST HAVE for any music fan. Audio Karate seriously are the best at what they do, and they did a great follow-up to Space Camp, which in itself seemed almost impossible to achieve. The CD also includes 3 enhanced videos, which are the music video of "Jesus Is Alive and Well (And Living in Mexico)", the making of the album, and the music video to "Nintendo 89", which is found on their last release. BUY THIS, IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY! Also make sure to check out their website for more info at: www.audiokarate.com

    5 out of 5 stars quality covers.......2006-01-30

a must have for any karate fan. must admit, i'm sad to hear they are no more :( i like the concept of the fishtank series... 2 days of studio time. the pressure is there, time is of the essence. karate delivers in classic fashion.

    5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2005-02-23

first off, the warning. if you are a karate fan, dont get excited expecting new karate material, because these are all covers.
now, that stated...go ahead and GET excited, because this is still a GREAT disc.
if you dont know anything about the fishtank series, basically it's a european label that gives touring bands 2 days of studio time to record an ep, then they release it. the results are a little inconsistent, to say the least.
that's not the case here. karate picks a very odd mix of songs to cover, but the results are great. these are all done in karate's style and after tracking down some of the orignals, they do an amazing job with them.
if you are a karate fan, you OWE it to yourself to pick this up. these songs end up sounding like they could have been older karate songs, and since i would guess the average person isn't going to know most of these songs...it's not even like a covers album.
the ONLY other warning i give, this is a short disc. more like an ep than a cd, but well worth the price of admission.
