Wendy Carlos's Switched-On Bach is one of those rare novelty recordings that never gets boring. In the capable hands of Carlos, Bach's keyboard masterpieces sound like they were made for the otherworldly blurps, farts, and chimes of a Moog synthesizer. And, in a sense, they were. Bach's inventive music doesn't lose any of it's contrapuntal punch in these complicated arrangements and, novelties aside, the playing is great on this Grammy Award-winning classic. Whether performing Bach's "Two-Part Inventions," "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," or "Wachet Auf," Carlos offers one-of-a-kind interpretations, her synthesizers still sounding as otherworldly as they did in 1968. This is one of those weird and wonderful classical releases that anyone--classical scholar or pop enthusiast--can enjoy. A Switched-On box set exists, capturing most of Carlos's baroque-gone-berserk output, but this is the disc that started it all. In a word, fun. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
VERY switched on and total joy!.......2007-04-27
Bach is so very well suited to this medium- to hear each line like this and really have so much great color and definition-- I think Bach himself would be so very proud of Wendy's achievement. This album was such a landmark- I also was fascinated by the Tomita Planets (a synthesized version of the same composition by Gustav Holst) when I was younger- but this album will always have a special place in my heart. If you get it for only the very first track, it will be money well spent. Having said that, the whole album is just amazing- the Air on a G string is so reverent and peaceful. The inventions are all a trip! The one in F always cracks me up because that was one of the 1st pieces of his I tried to play... very tough because the hands do exactly the same thing- but 1 measure apart. Wendy's tempos are cookin' too, such virtuosity! But the love is there too on the slower movements where the time and care with the dynamics is so evident.
GREAT ALBUM, be glad it's on CD and get it! You won't regret it.

Bach, enhanced by Ms. Wendy Carlos.......2007-03-13
I fell in love with this recording almost three decades ago. I maintain that there is no nicer performance of Bach. The genius of Ms. Wendy Carlos sparkles. It makes me reflect on the human achievements. It is wonderful that she has produced something so great, and that so many people have benefited from her talent.
My favorites are Symphonia to Cantata #29, Prelude and Fugue #7 in E-Flat Major and Prelude and Fugue #2 in C Minor (both from Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier), and also the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major.
The recording is enhanced and it has a delightful addition of about 8 minutes in which Ms. Wendy Carlos tells us about the early beginnings of this project. The CD comes with a very attractive booklet that is artistically designed and has several informative write-ups about the history and development of this project.
This recording is a must!

BT's This Binary Universe is really a follow-up to his 2004 soundtrack to Monster, a brilliant work of cinematic moods and ambient Americana. It was unjustly ignored by both the Oscars and the Grammys, where it should have at least been nominated for Best Surround Sound Recording. None of that has stopped Brian Transeau from going further down this path of expansive ambient electronica that takes him out of the techno-pop and trance direction he had been pursuing. This Binary Universe taps into BT's classical side, with expansive arrangements and intricate, albeit minimalist, thematic development. From the opening of "All That Makes Us Human Continues," BT reveals himself as a master of Eno-esque melancholy, as simple melodies evolve through an electro-orchestral instrumental palette. Lounge jazz with solos in the key of abstract, plaintive arpeggiated guitars, electro marches, minimalist hymns, and pastoral dreamscapes drive an album that seeks out joy and redemption, but not without traveling through the dark. The last track, "Good Morning Kaia," is a paean to his newborn daughter, and the most purely anthemic track on the disc. I suspect the real raison d'être of This Binary Universe is the accompanying 5:1 surround DVD. BT creates an immersive space that's less sonic pinball and more audio sculpture, often revealing different aspects of his music than in the stereo mix. Each song on the DVD has a unique video that includes antique robots, surreal landscape drawings, live action fantasies, and abstract designs. It's the best way to experience this music, but whether you watch the DVD or tune into the stereo CD, This Binary Universe may be the first ambient symphony of the 21st century. --John DilibertoProduct Description

Yea, the best of the best.......2007-06-30
Really enjoyed track 4 through 6. Even though those are only 3 songs, they are long and change to different styles in the middle. 6 is freaking awesome.
I wanted to give it 5 stars, but because I was expecting something else, I knocked off a star. Good job though.
Brilliant, just brilliant.......2007-06-07
If you like electronica in any way...strike that. If you think sound is kinda groovy, check this out. There will be something here for you.
Very good change for Mr. Transeau.......2007-06-01
On a side note, the reviewer who falsely credited BT with the score to the Matrix movies should check his/her facts first. The score was by Don Davis, a wonderful band named Juno Reactor, and contained songs by Paul Oakenfold, Rob Dougan, and several rock bands, but absolutely no BT songs were on the soundtracks to any of the 3 movies or the "Animatrix" short film collection, or any of the video games (so far).
This is a really interesting album, containing 7 ambient tracks that tend to follow the Concerto style of establishing a theme, varying the theme, then returning to it. Most of these songs follow this pattern in some shape or form. A major theme in here is youth, particularly infantile youth. I believe that Kaia is the name of his daughter, and supposedly he had her in his arms for many parts of this writing process. Many of the melodies are very beautiful in that infantile sort of way, giving you the impression that they are lullabies of sorts.
They are wonderfully crafted with an infinite amount of detail. There are subtle changes to almost every piece in every sequence. This is best enjoyed with headphones or in surround, as many other reviewers have noted.
The only parts that didn't fit well with me were the power chord sections of "Good Morning Kaia" which clashed with the rest of the album. The jazz section of "Dynamic Symmetry" also sounded quite robotic and lifeless. Jazz does not fit in well with the kind of perfection of sound that BT uses, at least in this attempt.
Major highlights are the orchestral sections in "The Antikythera Mechanism", which are booming and powerful, and get torn apart cleverly by his editing. The other is the core of the song "1.618" (a BRAVE title for a song, I might add), which is this gorgeous hook at a walking pace that you could loop and listen to for 20 minutes.
Overall, wonderful sculpting and a dizzying array of effects make the replay value on this music through the roof. A bit more work on the last track and a little more life in the short jazz section would've made it near perfect.

One of the most satisfying soundtrack "companion" pieces ever released, this collaboration between synthesist Wendy Carlos and producer Rachel Elkind manages to both logically extend and credibly expand on director Stanley Kubrick's masterfully conceived Clockwork Orange musical ethos. That shouldn't be surprising, as the pair was largely responsible for initiating those concepts with the music they'd begun as a follow-up to their successful, synthesizer-pioneering Switched on Bach collection. "Timesteps," a rich, wildly evocative, 13+ minute electronic sound and music collage, was based on impressions gleaned from Anthony Burgess's original novel (excerpts of it are liberally scattered throughout the film), while an abridged version of the fourth movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was an early experiment in vocal synthesis that ended up as one of the film's key motifs. Also featured here are synthesized versions of music Kubrick ultimately chose to use in orchestral form (Rossini's "The Thieving Magpie") as well as original Carlos/Elkind electronic compositions ("Orange Minuet," "Biblical Daydreams," and "Country Lane") that ended up on the cutting-room floor. Composed on primitive, monophonic analog instruments (which could play only one at a time!) long supplanted by generations of digital revolution, this work has a brooding otherworldly quality all its own. As our favorite Droog would say: "It was like a bird of rarest spun metal, or like silvery wine flowing in a space ship, gravity all nonsense now." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
A little bit misleading.......2007-05-13
Pioneering and enjoyable electronic music .......2006-09-15
Wendy Carlos's complete score is very satisfying and it still stands up well today (2006). I think that the standout tracks on this album are 'Timesteps' and 'Country Lane', which are powerful original compositions. Both tracks display a remarkable musical imagination.
Timesteps is a freely composed fantasia which takes us from place to place in the mind of the composer. There are moments which sound like jungle music, others which sound like sentimental film music with an ocean in the background and another second with an unnaturally sweet heavenly female choir sound. It is a unique composition and quite superb. It is a pity Wendy Carlos didn't write more music as inspired as this piece - perhaps she did and I haven't heard them!?
Country Lane is also very impressive. It is a piece which demonstrates very cruel emotions very well. The use of the ancient "Dies Irae" tune, also used very effectively by Liszt and Berlioz, "vocoded" is a brilliant touch. In fact, the vocoder was used very effectively by Wendy Carlos in Timesteps, Country Land and the Fourth Movement of the 9th Symphony of Beethoven on this disc. Perhaps the first significant use of this instrument on a recording? Kraftwerk and Zap went on to use the instrument in more popular musical styles.
The choral section of the fourth movement of Beethoven's 9th symphony recorded by Wendy Carlos is strangely beautiful and beguiling. Sort of a "reification" of a dreamt interpretation of the music? Perhaps.....
The purely "instrumental" works and Classical and Classically inspired works on this album are very interesting and represent some very effective use of the synthesizer. Of course, it would be easy for many people with a computer and some other equipment to do their own electronica versions of these works today. However, Wendy Carlos had a very personal style and understanding of this music. Her version of the 3rd, 4th and 5th Brandenburg Concertos still entertain me today, even though I am really a devotee of the HIP approach to this music.
I dare say that Wendy Carlos introduced a lot of young people to the music of Beethoven and to the idea of using synthesizers. I remember reading that Phil Oakey, from The Human League, said that Wendy Carlos was a major influence on him.

The Warner album includes an abridged excerpt of "Timesteps" (bits of it were used in the film), but the complete composition gets a deserved spotlight here. This is not a "movie soundtrack" album, but Wendy Carlos' own release of the music she prepared for the film. "Angel trumpets and devil trombones ... hear all proper now." ;)

This huge, cartoonish Californian crew, helmed by concept-man Shock-G, seized on the ultra-bassy funk woob-woob of Parliament-Funkadelic as the platform for its ensemble tomfoolery. At its best, it's inspired, daffy give-and-take that you can shake your rump to, especially on the hits "Doowutchalike" and "The Humpty Dance" and the ridiculous aquatic hip-hop fantasia "Underwater Rimes." At times, though, an uncomfortable current of leering misogyny surfaces. The disc ends with a suite of tracks about an imaginary safe-sex drug, the "sex packets" of the title. The concept gets stretched pretty thin, but "Packet Man," a cunning dialogue between Shock G (as a dealer) and his Groucho-nosed alter ego Humpty Hump (as his customer), is outright adorable. --Douglas WolkCustomer Reviews:

The 2 best songs are Humpty Dance and Dowatchyalike. Great party tunes with a cool, perverted sense of humor. The rest of the songs are good, but the others are the standouts.
The music is not dated b/c funk/ P-funk is timeless. I love to upset hardcore rappers by telling them that Tupac never did any better than when he was with the Digital Underground.
Want to get a party started or even better ...get lucky? Put on the Humpty Dance for your significant other, dance around with no shame or inhibitions, and your honey will just melt. Who can resist "my nose is like a pickle and in the 69 position it'll tickle your rear" (I think that's the lyric)

Having established himself as a folk singer-songwriter of considerable weight with 2002's--take a deep breath--Lifted, or the Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground, Conor Oberst takes the opportunity to experiment here. Released simultaneously with the more conventional follow-up disc, I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, Digital Ash in a Digital Urn sees the Omaha-based leader of Bright Eyes teaming up with a diverse set of musicians that includes Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner for a collection of songs that aim to recreate the alien landscapes of Radiohead but more often come off sounding like midperiod Depeche Mode. --Aidin VaziriAlbum Description
Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst continues to earn his reputation as our most respected young troubadour with almost frightening ease. He's been recording since the age of 13, and for the past few years he's been tagged "rock's boy genius" by the music press. Now, with the release of these two albums, we have unequivocal proof that the 24 year-old Oberst belongs amid our lineage of great American songwriters. These albums are a soundly articulated slice of modern life rolled into two very different records, both bursting with all of the heartfelt poetry for which Bright Eyes' records have earned their acclaim.Of course, the rough edges haven't gone away - the palpitation of a splintering note, the crack of a voice as it overextends, the clumsy thump of a misplaced thumb. It's all still there. But there's a glorious new level of depth and a maturation of texture, writing and delivery.Customer Reviews:
Conor discovers Kraftwerk!.......2007-01-30
Conor discovered the synth and decided to write about machine music. And unfortunately, that means every cruddy lyrical cliche about programming, man-machines, time codes, circuit boards, life and death in the digital age. Frankly, every thing you've heard done a million times better by the likes of Kraftwerk, New Order or even The Buggles. There's hardly a memorable melody or even an interesting song to be found here.
Really, if this had been on a major, someone with a lick of sense might have been able to talk him into working a bit more on the better of these songs ("Take It Easy" maybe) and re-cutting them later. But since Bright Eyes is essentially Saddle Creek's bread and butter, no-one was going to tell the kid the "Digital Ash" was a digital dog. Be honest here; if this wasn't Bright Eyes, it would be laughed off as amateurish electronica. I give it 2 1/2 stars because the best two songs here are really great, but the context is ill-suited. Get "I'm Wide Awake..." if you really want to hear why fans and critics are nuts about this guy.
Wow, and Wow.......2007-01-15
Released as the companion piece to the bright, acoustic I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, it shows off not just the plugged in/unplugged style of Conor, but instead the total opposites that exist inside his mind. Morning allows for bright, almost cheerful acoustic songs, while Digital Ash showcases intense melancholy. And, honestly, I couldn't be happier.
When the drumming, strings, and female vocals connect on "Down in a Rabbit Hole", you feel that Conor is up to something amazing. His more conventional fans hated this, but i was a great chance for conor to experiment, and it paid off well. Best Songs include Time Code, Light Pollution, and Down in a Rabbit Hole.
Beautiful........2006-11-18
Seriously... WHY do people hate this album so much?
Sure, it's synth-poppy here and there and sounds different from their usual releases, but remember that Bright Eyes is a band that likes to experiment. Styles and techniques are always changing, and personally I think it's an excellent release(though I've always enjoyed electronic music to begin with). The tracks on this album are simply uplifting and great to listen to(especially "Gold Mine Gutted", "Arc of Time" and "Easy/Lucky/Free"). Seems like no matter what Oberst does, whether he's writing depressive or happy music, the public just aren't satisfied and feel they have to pick away at it. Oh well, it's their loss.

In 1968, keyboardist-composer Wendy Carlos released Switched-On Bach, her bestselling LP featuring baroque music performed on the Moog synthesizer. Carlos intended to spread the gospel of electronic classical music through this quirky release; instead, she sold more albums than Karlheinz Stockhausen could ever dream of, released a few follow-ups, and paved the way for Hot Butter's "Popcorn." Carlos has since become well known for more than just these wacky classical interpretations--she recorded the soundtracks to A Clockwork Orange and Tron and released new works--but the Switched-Ons are the goofy synthesizer recordings that most of us still remember. No less than Glenn Gould proclaimed, "Carlos's realization of the Fourth Brandenburg Concerto is, to put it bluntly, the finest performance of any of the Brandenburgs--live, canned, or intuited--I've ever heard." We're not sure what he meant by that, but if you have half the enthusiasm Gould did for this music, check out this box set. All four of Carlos's baroque-gone-space-age LPs from the '70s are included here--Switched-On Bach, The Well-Tempered Synthesizer, Switched-On Bach II, and Switched-On Brandenburgs--completely remastered in all their stereophonic glory and containing bonus tracks (the fourth CD is even enhanced for use on your computer). The liner notes weigh in at around 150 pages, filled with photos and background information even on the evolution of Carlos's studio (you get the original LP notes in their entirety, too). The music? It's hilarious, absolutely riveting, and--whether Scarlatti, Bach, Handel, or Monteverdi--played successfully by Carlos and her battery of special effects. For the lover of the eclectic or the classical fan who knows how to let loose, this is a box set to get. --Jason Verlinde

Truly A Masterpiece!.......2007-05-11
Definitive, historical, all-in-one.......2007-03-04
Some have complained about the discussion tracks at the end of some CDs; I guess I can see how some might find them annoying. For pure ambience, you'll want to program your CD player to not play them, or just rip these CDs and burn a new copy minus those tracks.
One minor complaint I have is that the Brandenburgs are scattered throughout. I don't think it should have been all that bad to just have some of them duplicated. But I do understand the rationale, including them as is on the albums where they appeared individually, and then only putting the rest on the actual Brandenburgs pair of CDs. Personally, I love being able to listen to all the Brandenburgs straight through, so again I just made new versions of CD for my own use with them all together in their original order.
And of course, these days so many people aren't even listening to their CDs on the CD player. The music is ripped and then played using an MP3 player, computer, or similar device. Making playlists for your preferred track arrangements obviates any of the above complaints.
Regardless, I think that the value of having an all-in-one collection of these classic electronic instruments and performances far outweighs any minor issues regarding one's opinion of the choice of production arranagement.

Honestly, some of the music on these albums is so good you may never hear Bach, Handel, or Scarlatti the same way again.
When I saw this boxed set for sale, I purchased it with a little trepidation, unsure if it would live up to my memory of it and not sure what my wife or daughter would make of it. I'm glad I got it, though. It's a wonderful recording and the two bonus tracks are fun to listen to. In fact, I wish CDs had the same "commentary" tracks that DVDs have as I would have enjoyed hearing more about how this recording was put together.

Monster was an unflinching movie that took you to the edge of the abyss with Aileen Wournos, a prostitute who murdered seven of her customers in Florida in the 1980s. Director Patty Jenkins' film is a sympathetic portrait of Wournos and BT's (Brian Transeau) score ranges from hopeful to harrowing. Fans of BT's trance music won't find any of his familiar beats and techno strategies here, but a work that is just as immersive. Mixing ambient Americana, melancholic minimalism, and atonal atmospheres, this isn't the kind of score you might expect from a musician more associated with dance, trance, and pop music. But BT pulls out all the emotional stops here from the poignant opening theme, "Childhood Montage," with its haunting keyboard refrain, to the stomping guitar twang rave-up on "Ditch the Car." Instead of the usual soundtrack of truncated cues, BT has fleshed out his themes into extended works that segue through the disc. An additional bonus is a DVD-A 5:1 surround mix that puts you right in the middle of BT's spectral swirl. Adding an additional 9 tracks of music, BT paints a 360 degree sound world that is as enveloping as it is compelling. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:
Great CD!.......2007-01-18
Simply Haunting.......2007-01-16
p.s. I've heard a few songs in recent movie trailors. I wonder if they'll be included in those soundtracks, too.
Brilliant .......2005-06-04
Absolutely phenominal.......2005-04-09
Revolutionary.......2004-12-23
First off, it's a two disc soundtrack. There's a DVD and a CD. The DVD is actually the primary medium for the soundtrack. It was composed for surround sound, and the DVD contains the soundtrack in DTS audio, as it was meant to be heard. It also has a stereo mix. It's about 2 hours long, which is another reason it was released on DVD, and it's pretty much a single work, with tracks fading into each other. Absolutely brilliant stuff. It's hard to believe it was composed by BT--it's not trance. It's very ambient, kind of like Eno, but with fascinating melodies and rhythms coming through often enough to make it more accessable than some other pure ambient music. It's played with real instruments, prominently featuring a hurdy-gurdy, but it has sounds and samples woven through it also. And the 5.1 is used to full effect, making it a completely immersive experience.
Of course, there's a CD with it as well. It contains a stereo mix of about half the tracks (mainly the more melodic ones), and it's great. Well worth the price of the disc even if you don't have the equipment to take advantage of the surround sound experience.
I'm getting a fairly hefty collection of soundtracks, and it's not often anymore that I'm really surprised by a movie score. This one did it for me. Just thought I'd share.

Great Album, but. . ........2006-08-08
The thing that ruins the CD for me is the very last track on both albums, where Wendy discusses the making of the album, called Well-tempered experiments.
I think that is fun to listen to the first time you play it, but then it is obnoxious when you are playing it as you work around the house. Your home is filled with music, then suddenly, there is talking and some obnoxious noises. It just shouldn't be there.
And to do this to both albums is very disappointing. It is hard to ignore, as it is a 9 minute track!
I solved this by burning both albums onto another CD and eliminating the experiment tracks. But I would rather have the original CD's and eliminate those tracks.
As good as I remembered it!.......2006-03-03
Imagine someone who, to cook breakfast, designs a henhouse, raises chickens, gathers the eggs, grinds wheat to make bread, picks fresh strawberries...all for a breakfast that could be made more easily using traditional sources or methods. Pardon the clumsy metaphor, but this is what Carlos had done: giving me Bach, by creating a new kind of chicken to get to the egg.
The sounds one hears in this recording are not as sophisticated as more modern synthetic voices, but they are still pristine and haunting. There is a sort of lonely, cosmic emptiness to the sound, but this is not discomforting; in fact, the music triumphs over the strangeness that no human hand or throat moved during the process, except at the keyboard and the 747-cockpit looking control panel of the Moog synthesizer.
Having a CD of this music is a joy, and the music delights.

I dig it........2006-01-31
Remember these tunes?.......2005-10-12
The correct DU greatest hits album to buy.......2005-09-14
That said, there are some "blemishes" on this disc. The version of "Doowutchyalike" on this album is shortened (it ends at the radio fade). And "Same Song," "Underwater Rimes," and "Wussup Wit the Luv" are non-original cuts (see the track listing for details). However, if you're going for a greatest hits, these songs probably aren't what you're worried about.
Enjoy and doowutchyalike.
