5 out of 5 stars More Re-issued Sills Appears On CD!.......2007-01-17

Well, finally we get the Wadsworth & friends recital LP re-issued on CD. I always loved that recording and am pleased to see it available again and that is why I'm giving this collection 5 stars.

The rest of the material has been previously released in collection and complete form several times already and I do take issue with Deutsche Grammophon for that.

They still have yet to release her complete "Norma" which is deserving of being re-issued. There's also the French Arias disc which has appeared piece-meal here and there, but has not shown up in its complete form with the ENTIRE "Les Huguenots" aria "O Beau Pays De La Touraine!" (I've only known of it showing up on CD truncated.)Also, the Donizetti/Bellini recital which was put out on CD by Millenium could be improved upon with a new remastering and rerelease.

And if I'm not mistaken, when the "lost" Verdi arias made their way to the public in the 1980s I seem to recall mention that there were some Rossini arias recorded during those sessions as well!

Anyway, DG, I wish you would finish releasing the entire Sills catalogue instead of throwing the listeners and fans bits and pieces on compilation discs!

4 out of 5 stars good, though some room for improvement.......2006-05-28

This cd is generally very very nice. I think this is only my 2nd cd with Marais music on it so I was interested to see if it was as good as the Marais stuff on Jordi Savall's Tous les Matins du Monde. I would say that I liked it about as much as that cd, except for the Couplets de Folies. On that track I thought the viol was too low in the mix. It wasn't "front and centre" like it is in Savall's version. Of the rest of the pieces on the disc the D major suite (tracks 5-10) is definitely my favourite; it's mostly slow & simltaneously happy & sad somehow. I think the other two suites are almost as good.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Interpretations of French Baroque Viola Pieces.......2005-10-23

French Baroque is not a very well known style in performance circles either by the performers themselves or audiences. In particular, viola performances are probably the least known or heard. The viola da gamba is the cello's predecessor and prominent in both English and French Early-Mid Baroque. The instrument has greater range and resonance with 7 strings. There are probably fewer than 300 professional players performing on this instrument today. There are probably 4-5 who are the best and the musicians here are not even close to the talent of the undisputed and unmatched French master violist, Jordi Savall: there is absolutely no comparison.

The pieces here are mostly too slow in their interpretations of the meter and the players are simply not proficient enough to play most of them in terms of technique and knowledge of the French Baroque style. The violas are groaning in slow agony or screeching most of the time which is completely at odds with the intentions of the composer. All of them are equally pathetic in their execution. Listen to a sample of Savall's performances such as on the soundtrack to 'All The Mornings of The World' and the music will simply explain itself for you to make your descisions in buying French Baroque. He also has the best performance of Lully's 'Les Concerts Royaux' that I have ever heard: this man is nothing less than a prodigy in his art of the viola and his direction of French Baroque. I have the utmost respect for this man as an artist: he is truly a living legend.

For French Baroque in general and especially for Marin Marais or other viola composers, there is no other performer/conductor than Jordi Savall worth listening to. Especially for viola, his closest contenders are still motionless on the ground while he is flying circles in the stratosphere: there is simply no comparison and his virtuosity is exponentially superior to every one else's. Find out for yourselves and you will soon be agreeing with what I say. Since they didn't mention him by name, it seems that the previous reviewers have not heard Savall and so I wouldn't give too much credence in their overgenerous ratings. Good luck in your search for great music!

5 out of 5 stars Great Baroque Music.......2005-09-29

This is another outstanding Naxos recording of hauntingly beautiful viola da gamba music from the era of great French kings and queens. Although the artists and recordings may not be the finest available, they are certainly fine enough for all but the most critical enthusiasts. If you really like these, search out the more expensive versions and double your pleasure!

3 out of 5 stars Nice music, not a great recording..........2003-08-13

As always, Marais' music is in a league of its own, and it is performed here with finesse and in a style appropriate to the music, but what disappointed me about this CD was the quality of the recording. It sounds like it was recorded in a room that was a little too small, and the result is a bogged down and at times irritatingly boxy recording.

5 out of 5 stars For all moods.......2003-01-30

I'm not an expert on classical music, and my review will not be a technical one - all I know is if you enjoy baroque and/or the deep, affecting tones of the viol, you will really enjoy this. This is a CD which is alternately pensive and stirring. Great stuff if you want to think about nothing or everything.

Esa-Pekka Salonen's take on these Debussy classics is a shade faster than most, but not so much so as to destroy the delicate tapestries of the music. This is especially true in Nocturnes. Salonen's advantage here is that he's got the Los Angeles Philharmonic whose sound is rich and, where it needs to be, deep. This strength can be found in the beautiful La Damoiselle elue (The Blessed Damozel), based on poems by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Dawn Upshaw's voice has never sounded so fine. Le Martyre de Saint Sebastien, a somber symphonic fragment, is almost uncharacteristic of the composer. Recommended anyway. --Paul Cook

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Lesser-known Debussy.......2005-11-30

This offering from Sony Classics features three lesser-known works by the French impressionist master Claude Debussy. The three Nocturnes (Nuages, Fetes, and Sirenes) show Debussy at his most visual. He describes Nuages as the slow changing night sky, Fetes as a night festival, and Sirenes as a song heard on the sea. Nuages focuses on the shifting of orchestral colors through lush chord changes and expansive melodic lines. Fetes is more extroverted, featuring ever-changing irregular rhythms, growing into a march, complete with tricky fanfares and eventually fading into the evening. Sirenes adds the element of wordless women's choir, an effect that is rather haunting. The undulating motion of voices mixing duples and triples keeps an uneasy feeling of being at sea, but the sultriness of being lured further to sea by some unearthliness. Captivating.

The Blessed Damozel is a 20-minute work for orchestra, soprano, and 4-part women's chorus. It is a sentimental setting of a poem, by the same name, by Dante Rossetti. The story tells of a woman in heaven who wishes she could be with her lover, a man who is still on Earth. The soprano part is sung by the masterful Dawn Upshaw, who performs beautifully. The music is of a young Debussy, at least compared to the other works on this disk, but his voice is clear. It is nice to have this rarely performed miniature masterpiece.

The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian is about a young officer who is ordered to have himself killed by his own archers because he had sympathy over the persecution of Christians. This concert suite is in four movements (The Court of the Lilies, Ecstatic Dance, The Passion, and The Good Shepherd). The first movement is a short chorale-like prelude, the second is the youths' vision of sympathy for the Christians while performing trials on hot coals, the third is Sebastian's awaiting martyrdom, and the fourth is the site of the martyrdom. This is the most personal and intense music I have ever heard from Debussy. Rather subdued, Debussy lets you know this is serious music, and the tone doesn't change until the last four bars of the last movement when Sebastian views the "good shepherd".

The playing by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Esa-Pekka Salonen is extrodinary; many hours have been put into the details of these works. The sound is vivid and vibrant. The chorus is also very good and the soloist outstanding. While I suggest you start with more familiar Debussy if you are new to his music (try Salonen's 2nd Debussy outing on Sony or Boulez on DG), these less-performed works are a nice completion to the works of Debussy, and excellently performed.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful........2003-09-24

Many thanks to the artists who worked tirelessly to record this piece of perfection. It is absolutely beautiful and inspiring. It is a revelation to the genius of Debussy.

5 out of 5 stars The World Of Debussy.......2002-10-10

Two rarities from Claude Debussy's wide-ranging impressionist music terrain are placed together with one of his most popular works on this excellent 1993 recording by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and music director Esa-Pekka Salonen. Perhaps surpassed only by Pierre Boulez in the realm of Debussy interpreters, Salonen and the orchestra weave a textural soundscape of mystical scope.

The rarely heard cantata "La Damoiselle Elue", based on a poem by Dante Gabriel Rozetti, is superbly performed by the orchestra and a fine pair of vocalists, Dawn Upshaw and Paula Rasmussen, along with the women of the world-famous Los Angeles Master Chorale. The orchestra shines on its own in the even rarer "Martyrdom Of St. Sebastien", whose music Debussy composed for a play by the exiled Italian writer Gabriele D'Annunzio.

The opening work, the celebrated three-part suite "Nocturnes", is of course one of the high watermarks of all time in classical music. In this work, Debussy depicts his impressions and special effects of light: "Clouds"; "Festivals"; and "Sirens." This last section, based like "La Mer" on his impressions of the sea, features a wordless female choir--and once again, the L.A. Master Chorale's women's section performs admirably in their role.

For anyone with a taste of musical impressionism in general and Debussy in particular, this recording is one well worth searching for.

    5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2001-01-24

Once again, Paula Rasmussen delivers a hit. This mezzo-soprano has one of the best voices in the business. A must have for fans of classical, Orchestra and Opera.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music, well played.......2006-08-31

This is an incredible collection of pieces from an important modern composer...played by an incredible collection of performers. Some of them are famous, others deserve to be. The variety of sounds, the skillful use of different instruments and voices, and the outstanding performances make this a great CD set. The range of instruments is fascinating, from voice (doing vocal gymnastics we can't imagine) to Paula Robison's flute, to Gary Verkade on the organ. Anyone with an interest in new music should listen to this!

      Amazon.com essential recording

Most well-rounded conductors learn their craft in the theater pit, so it's odd that some of the greatest--such as George Szell and Bruno Walter--never made commercial recordings of complete operas. At least Fritz Reiner made one: his 1953 Carmen. The mono engineeering, if a little dry, has a crackling immediacy that mirrors Reiner's regimented but never rigid shaping of Bizet's ceaselessly inventive score, given with the once de rigeur Choudens recitatives, along with ballet music from La Jolie Fille de Perth and L'Arlesienne Suite No. 2 popping up in Act 4 for good measure. Risë Stevens shines in the title role, and her lover-turned-nemesis Don José is sung with big-toned eloquence (and better French than he was credited for!) by Jan Peerce. Robert Merrill's virile Escamillo proves a fresher portrayal than the singer's remake a decade later under Karajan. Though a bit past her prime, Licia Albanese elevates Micaela from fifth-wheel status to a strong, supportive role. For Bizet's original text and updated sonics, Solti's incisive leadership best reflects Reiner's tight-reigned sensibility. If mono and textual vagaries don't matter, the firm yet vivid baton of Fritz Reiner makes a cogent case for Carmen as grand opera. Classic stuff. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL OLD FASHIONED "GRAND OPERA CARMEN".......1999-12-17

I love this 1951 RCA recording of "Carmen" for the type of performane it is. This was the first recording of this opera that I ever heard, and I've kept returning to it time and time again. To be sure, it is not the "french" and "authentic" reading which has become fashionable in recent years (in which one can hear most if not all of the original "opera comique" dialogue). Nor does it even have much Gallic atmosphere. What it does have, however, is a conductor and cast that sets the opera before us as it used to be performed before the opera comique version came into vogue. This is a "grand opera" Carmen, completely sans the dialogue, and conducted by Fritz Reiner in a bold and grand manner. His is not a subtle performance ---- quite the contrary ----- the whole thing comes off as something resembling a spectacular Broadway show, but the results are entirely enjoyable and fun. Rise Stevens virtually owned the role of Carmen during her Metropolitan Opera career (which spanned close to two decades), and what she accomplishes here is a good representation of her Carmen during her palmiest vocal period. An attractive and extremely intelligent artist with a fine lyric mezzo-soprano voice, Stevens lays what she has on the line and throws it right in your face. Her Carmen is alert, flighty, sexy, and sometimes rather nasty ---- a traditional interpretation, but one that still holds up. She does not have the charm and elegance of Victoria de los Angeles or Teresa Berganza, but for the artist she was for her time, her approach was accepted as the correct one. Jan Peerce had a solid and reliable tenor, albeit sometimes nasal in quality, and his Don Jose had real temperment (though admittedly, his particular type of temperment was more reminiscent of the Italian style as opposed to the French). Licia Albanese is a vivid and compelling Michaela, one who sounds truly frightened out of her wits in the third act. Robert Merrill is a strong and youthful Escamillo. The supporting cast is fine. The digitally remastered sound gives new presence and sheen to the original tapes, making it perfectly acceptable to hear. I cherish this recording for the type of style it represents. All the hit tunes are here, and all are sung with guts and grit. This performance makes no pretenses -- it is what it is ----- but it works, and it's a lot of fun to listen to. For whatever it is, I love it as much as ever. What more can I say?

2 out of 5 stars Old fashioned overblown Carmen.......1999-10-13

I grew up in the 70's and got to know Carmen through Solti's recording, one of his better non-Wagner recordings. Since then, my prefered version is the matchless Berganza/Abbado recording in DG, certainly the most beautiful and stylish of all. A friend recommended the Reiner recording and I was curious enough to buy it. This is an old fashioned Carmen, that takes us back to the 50's when Carmen was thought "a Grand Opera" rather than an Opera Comique with dialogues. To me, this sounds too much like Cavalleria Rusticana, loud and a little vulgar. For a more stylish 1950's Carmen, I much prefer the Victoria de Los Angeles/ Beecham recording.

      5 out of 5 stars A FUN 'CARMEN'.......1999-06-19

I was raised on this recording, and in my teens listened to it so often that I wore the records out. I remember how I could almost "see" the action being played out. The years passed, and other recordings of "Carmen" emerged (with the likes of Leontyne Price, Maria Callas, Grace Bumbry, Regine Crespin, Teresa Berganza, etc.), and I somehow let this one fade from memory. I am not saying that the "Carmen" presented here is the only way to do the piece. Nor are most of the singers faultless. But it works! Rise Stevens made this role her own in her time and it's easy to see why. Her mezzo was ample, colorful, and very easy on the ear. She also had the ability to act with the voice, which is not to say that she delves very deeply into the character. Onstage, she certainly could be made to look the part, and so she was. Jan Peerce's articulation of the French language and style is, to say the least, inadequate, but he sings with such verve and compulsion that it doesn't matter. I have never been an admirer of the voice of Licia Albanese's voice, but she creates a truly memorable Michaela, who sounds scared out of her wits in her Act III aria. Robert Merrill is a sonorous matador and he sings his big song as only he could at the time. The conducting of Fritz Reiner is colorful, dramatic, and always compelling. This is a grand-opera approach to "Carmen" that may offend those who like a more opera-comique type of approach, but on it's own terms, it works and it works very, very well.

Among the most storied achievements of the "12th-Century Renaissance" are, of course, the poetry and songs of the troubadours and their northern French counterparts, the trouvères. Less well-known is the fact that there were at least 20 trobairitz (female troubadors) and two female trouvères. Sinfonye explores their works--along with the chanson de toile and chanson de femme, two distinct forms--written from a woman's viewpoint--on The Sweet Look and the Loving Manner. Unfortunately, only one song, A chantar m'er by the Comtessa de Dia, survives with a melody; Sinfonye solves this problem by using a standard medieval procedure--contrafactum, i.e., fitting existing melodies (in this case, by male troubadours) with new texts (by trobairitz). Vivien Ellis brings a plain, folkish voice to these songs--she doesn't achieve all the subtlety one might want, but her singing has an appealing directness and simplicity. The instrumental preludes occasionally seem disconnected from the songs they introduce, but the playing is otherwise lively and sensitive. --Matthew Westphal

Paul McCreesh's second major recording (and second Gramophone Award winner) reconstructs Vespers for the Feast of the Annunciation at San Marco circa 1643, using music by Monteverdi and contemporaries including Cavalli, Grandi, and Rigatti. The music is less dense and lavishly scored than on A Venetian Coronation, but more virtuosic and varied--ranging from Finetti's sweet, languid "O Maria, quæ rapis" for two falsettists and Monteverdi's lively "Laudate Dominum" for solo tenor, to Marini's sensuous sonata for three violins and Monteverdi's spectacular "Lætatus sum" for six singers, two violins, two trombones, and bassoon over a repeated four-note bass. There is so much excitement here that even the opening of "Lætatus sum"--four measures of only the repeating bass--shimmers with energy. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Gabrieli Consort recordings.......2007-03-17

This really a fine recording. I bought my copy one sunny Saturday morning in Melbourne in around 1993. I saw it on the shelf and I got my wallet out. I was completely blown away by the music on this disc. Rigatti was a real discovery for me.

The use of high falsettists in the chorus and solos is particularly effective and gives us a real insight into the sounds of music in Venice in the early 17th century.

I cannot recommend this marvellous recording too highly, it is clearly one of the best made by the Gabrieli Consort, Choir & Players.

Great playing from the strings, cornetti and tromboni.

Venice, once the most powerful city in the world due to its position in trade routes and as a nexus for military activities between the East and West, was also a leading centre for the arts and music for generations. As often happens, the cultural influence of the city remained strong long after the political and economic power was gone. So strong was the influence of Venice at this time that musicians and artists of other nations came to Venice to study, and carried back the influence to their home countries. One of the towering figures of this history was Claudio Monteverdi, who along with his many compositions sacred and secular, is credited with the first opera, 'L'Orfeo'. Monteverdi's compositions form the heart of this collection, which is designed as would be a Vespers service in St. Mark's Basilica in 1643.

Monteverdi is the leading light in this collection, but other composers of the time are also featured. The great Giovanni Gabrieli is acknowledged not only in the opening piece, but also in the name of the performers: the Gabrieli Consort and Players, under the direction of Paul McCreesh. Other composers featured include Rigatti, Grandi, Banchieri, Finetti, Cavalli, Marini, and Fasolo. The service of Vespers at St. Mark's was an elaborate affair, enhanced with extraliturgical motets and instrumental music, according to McCreesh. This was not according to standard liturgical practice, but was typical Venetian practice, where the Vespers became a very popular event. The Doge regularly attended the service.

This recording includes musical settings and plainchant from the time. While St. Mark's had a choir and consort of players totaling as many as 30 people each, usually services would only require about half that number. The choir would have had castrati as part of the vocal ensemble; that vocal range has been provided here by female sopranos and male falsettists.

Paul McCreesh formed the Gabrieli Consort and Players while still a student at Manchester University in the 1980s. Since then, the group and conductor have gone on to international awards and acclaim, specialising in music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, which this particular disc fits by being done at the mid-point of the transition between the two.

This is a glorious, two-disc collection, done in a wonderful form of reconstructing what an actual service would be like. It is a brilliant performance, with graceful vocal and instrumental blending and strong tones of the spirit of music.

4 out of 5 stars Good work Gabrieli.......2003-03-20

Excellent 2-disc release by the Gabrieli Consort. The falsettists were supreme!

        5 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Set.......2001-10-23

The Vespers that Paul McLeish has reconstructed here are those that might have occurred on March 24, 1643, just one year before the death of Monteverdi whose music figures prominently in this service. Vespers is the principle evening service of the Catholic Church and in Venice the music written for this service was spectacular. At San Marco, the Doge regularly attended Vespers and it was typical that the Pala d'oro, the fantastic piece of Byzantine art, was on display.

The music recorded here has great appeal. The Dixit Dominus by Giovanni Antonio Rigatti is very evocative of the warlike nature of Psalm 109 and the four pieces by Monteverdi are among his best works. Of these, the Laetatus sum on Psalm 121 is characterized by highly colorful vocal writing and brilliant scoring which includes a trombone and bassoon, and Monteverdi's Laudate Dominum (Psalm 150) has exquisite writing for the voice. One of the highlights is the motet by Alessandro Grandi O intermerata, which is beautifully sung by Charles Daniels. But I would have to say that I have heard this work by sung with more passion and color by Nigel Rogers (on the recording Venice Preserved). I do recommend comparing the two performances.

The performances are truly excellent on this CD and the recording lends a feeling of a large space, so if you close your eyes you could think you have been transported to San Marco. Paul McLeish put a lot of scholarly work into reconstructing this service but it is not a dry example of scholarship but a vivid and brilliant performance. This is excellent music making that I highly recommended and is precisely that excellence that I have come to expect from the Gabrieli Consort.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing reproduction of 17th century Vespers.......1999-12-17

Paul McCreesh and his Gabrieli Consort and Players have put together an entirely captivating re-creation of a Vespers service, the Catholic office of evening prayer, as it might have been performed at St. Mark's in Venice in the early 17th century. From the sacristy bell, to the chants, to the massive and breathtaking polychoral hymns and psalms, McCreesh weaves a tapestry of sound that is simply unparalleled. The Gabrieli Players' violinists play with such Italianate freshness and detail -- down to the last trill -- and the sopranos' voices are so fresh and lively that this CD is simply a must-own for any fan of Early Music. Having just seen the Consort and Players perform in Columbus, OH on 15 Dec. 1999, I can say for sure that this group is simply magical. There are few CDs I would grab on my way out of a burning building -- this is one.
