Amazon.com essential recording

For better or worse, Phil Collins's "In the Air Tonight" was the "Stairway to Heaven" of the '80s, winning radio stations' listener polls and even lending its designer threat to an episode of Miami Vice. Hits recalls the days when the Collins name on a disc ensured its immediate embrace by programmers and the public. How you feel about these songs will depend on how you felt about them then; despite the undeniable niceness of "Take Me Home" and "One More Night," they're unlikely to win over anyone who didn't adore them to begin with. Those who cared, though, will no doubt be gladdened to find most of Collins's biggest tunes together on one disc. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Love! Love! Love! Lovveeeeee this compilation!.......2007-07-12

HITS!....a wonderfully compiled album that contains all the songs that truly matter(well except 1 or 2 such as "do you remember" and "i missed again")...So much that it doesn't even need a qualifier such as "greatest" or something equally descriptive.

I cannot even begin to rank any of these classics in any order of preference...that would an absolute undecisive mess! From the chart topping cover of Cindy Lauper's "true colors" and mellow ballads such as "Separate lives" and "I wish it would rain down", to the funky-ness of "Sussudio", this album has it all. Collins' musical genuis is well apparent. "Hits" is a mere reminder of how truly gifted he is as a musician...he sings(amazingly) and drums(wonderfully too)...he rocks! simply put.

4 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-06-30

I didn't want to buy all of Collins's albums, so I bought this. It's great music to listen to for when you want something relaxing. I believe this album includes all of Phil's big hits from the 80s/ early 90s.

5 out of 5 stars All the hits in one package!.......2007-05-28

This CD is awesome. If you love Phil, you'll love this. All the slow sad hits, to the upbeat fun ones...what can I say? What's not to love?

4 out of 5 stars Everything That's Right and Everything That's Wrong With Phil Collins.......2007-05-22

I'll start off by saying that, in my eyes, there are two sides to Phil Collins. The first side is the pop mastermind side. This particular facet of the Phil Collins persona is able to construct some spot-on catchy tunes. The other side, however, is a pap manufacturer. Rather than giving us pop nuggets, this side of Phil Collins prefers to sneeze out some of the cheesiest ballads that ever befell mankind.

I, for one, prefer pop mastermind Phil.

The reasons for that are evident here on the Hits compilation. "Take Me Home," for instance, is one of my favourite tunes ever. Take a tremendous hook, captivating percussion and make it universal and BAM!, you've got a classic. It's nothing but pop, sure, but it holds up remarkably well. Other tunes tinker with even poppier sensibilities (i.e., "Sussudio" and "You Can't Hurry Love"), while others take Phil into a brooding ("In the Air Tonight") or socially-conscious ("Another Day in Paradise") territory. Either way, it works.

Then, there's pap Phil. Dreadfully insipid ballads plagued his career, and alas, they're on here too. A good part of this compilation's midsection is devoted to this hapless drivel, unfortunately. Oh well. We can live with that (i.e., skip ahead to the good numbers).

Overall, though, this compilation shows us the two faces of Phil Collins' work. One is remarkable, the other is not. In addition to the 80s pop cliches, there is a good mix of styles here, including faux-60s soul, 90s-styled R&B (ugh...). If you hate Phil Collins, just give this thing a spin: You might grow to dig one of his two facets.

5 out of 5 stars Where`s Don`t Lose my Number?.......2007-04-09

This, Along with the Turn it on again Genesis collection is THE best CD ever! However: Where the hell is I Don`t Care Anymore and Don`t lose my Number? IDCA is like the sequel to In The Air Tonight and DLMN was a TOP 5 SMASH (bigger hit than Take me Home) There was enough room for one more song on the CD so Phil shoulda put IDCA as track 16, In beween `Air Tonight and `Home and replaced that BS True Colors with DLMN. Now THATS what I call a Hits collection!

Album Description

Founded in the late '60s in Surrey, England, Genesis rose out of the ashes of earlier bands formed by schoolmates Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Anthony Phillips (who departed after 1969's Trespass, the album providing the final track on this stellar retrospective). Guitarist Steve Hackett soon signed on, as did drummer/vocalist Phil Collins, who'd later emerge (as would Gabriel) as a solo superstar. Following Gabriel's 1975 departure, Genesis grew from a progressive art-rock outfit into one of the biggest arena rock acts ever, with a long string of platinum-sellers and chart smashes. On this, their most comprehensive career-spanning collection to date, Genesis' remarkable evolution is revealed.

A really good overview of their work.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction ahead of Genesis' 2007 US tour.......2007-06-07

Economic value: 5 Stars; Compilation: 4 Stars; Packaging: 3 Stars

Now that Genesis has decided to do the (take your pick: dreaded/hoped for) reunion tour this year, starting in Europe shortly, coming to the US later this year, it's time to revisit the only compilation that spans the entire Genesis studio catalogue.

"Genesis Platinum Edition" (3 CDs; 40 tracks; 235 min.) tracks the band's history in reverse chronological order, with one exception: the title track of 1997's "Calling All Stations", which is stuck at the end of CD1 and sounds totally out of place--for many reasons. But for that song, this covers Genesis 1971-1991, and it's amazing what these guys put out in 20 years, and how the band evolved. This compilation is a decent attempt to cover it all. CD1 (16 tracks, 78 min.) covers the band's most successfull years, and many of these tracks are also found on the "Turn It On Again - The Hits" compilation. Am I the only one to think that the songs from 1986's "Invisible Touch" album have aged very poorly? It makes me cringe to listen to them. (Note: "Tonight Tonight Tonight" comes in an edited, short version here.) CD2 (15 tracks, 77 min.) tracks the intermediary years and I was surprised how good these songs resonate still. Check out for example "Abacab" (in the full album version, thankfully), and "In That Quiet Earth/Afterglow", but shamefully "One for the Vine" is missing, one of the band's best tracks ever (and perhaps the best song Tony Banks ever penned). CD3 (9 tracks, 80 min.) covers the Peter Gabriel years (1971-1975), and while I did not mind (and at times greatly enjoyed) Genesis' evolution to a mainstream successful band, this era is still the most compelling for me. Check out "The Cinema Show" and "Supper's Ready" (both here in full length) if you're not familiar with them, you'll be blown away, I promise you.

There is no arguing with the economic value of this compilation: 4 hours of music for $20, you can't beat that. The packaging is a different story: skimpy liner notes, and the booklet is misprinted with pages out of order... I have seen Genesis in concert only once, in Brussels on the 1977 tour for "Wind & Wuthering" and I remember it as if it was yesterday. Unforgettable. While I know that this year's reunion tour is probably a money-grabbing thing, I nevertheless do plan on seeing them when they come to Columbus in September, for nostalgic reasons if nothing else.

5 out of 5 stars What the Turn it On Again collection should`ve been.............2007-05-14

This is, without a shadow of a doubt THE best collection of my favorite band of all time. Disc 1 is what the TIOA CD shoulda been. Not just pure hit machine pop but some great prog like Home by Sea & Mama COMPLETLEY UNEDITED. Also has a hard to find piece called Paperlate remixed.-5 stars. Disc 2 has classics like ABACAB & Turn it on Again totally remixed. it ain`t Genesis at its best but its good.-4.5 stars. Disc 3 is a masterpiece, prog rock greatness with Suppers Ready! Nuff said.-6 stars. steller.

3 out of 5 stars Great musicianship, but can you - honestly - take Phil Collins seriously?.......2007-05-11

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Peter Gabrial, Steve Hackett (later of "GTR," a band Creem Magazine referred to as "SHT"), Tony Banks, Chester Thompson, Mike Rutherford (he of "The Living Years" fam ), and...and...and...Phil Collins. EXCELLENT drummer! But WHY "push the envelope," seeing how annoying he can be? Oh well, "buy the ticket, take the ride," I guess...

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat completed the transition from cantata for schoolkids to big-budget glitzfest with Steven Pimlott's 1991 London revival. Here's the 1992 Canadian version of that show, and even if it's not an ideal recording--Janet Metz as the narrator is no match for Laurie Beechman in the original Broadway cast and there's a little too much synthesizer in the orchestrations--this CD is valuable for the performance of former teen pop idol Donny Osmond as the title character. He's in excellent voice, and was so right for the role that he was selected to preserve it for the 2000 video production. And of course the songs are still here, showcasing Rice's witty lyrics and Lloyd Webber's chameleon tendencies--dabbling in country, calypso, French cafés, and a King-like pharaoh--as well as favorites "Any Dream Will Do," "Close Every Door," and "Go, Go, Go Joseph." This production also includes the "Joseph Remix" (also known as the "Joseph Megamix"), a nine-minute medley of themes arranged with a heavy beat that was used for a kind of onstage aerobics routine as the show's postscript. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars JUST THE BEST.......2007-05-13

If you haven't seen this play yet, don't miss it if it comes to your town.
However, if you want to hear the music with Donny Osmond's voice, then buy this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous Music!.......2007-03-08

It goes without saying that the music is fabulous, as ever. It's a timeless story and Donny Osmond still has a great voice. I bought the sound track after watching the movie over and over, so my point of view is biased toward the movie sound track. I found the narrator's voice on this CD to be a little too high-pitched for me, but I eventually got used to it. The French accent in "Those Canaan Days" was deliberately overdone and spoiled an otherwise interesting song. Other than that, the CD music was close enough to the movie sound track to be satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars We love it.......2007-01-17

This was for my 10 year old daughter for Christmas. She has every song memorized already. It was a good deal too!

2 out of 5 stars Unhappy with sound.......2007-01-09

I had bought an original cassette when I saw the show in Chicago. I was very excited to find this CD as I had worn the cassette out. I was however very disappointed with the quality of sound. I could not hear the lead singer over the chorus, no matter how I adjusted my speakers. I do not know if all these CD's are like this, but I would not recommend it due to poor quality of sound.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Family listening!.......2006-08-29

I used this DVD to teach the kids a song from Vacation bible school, and had a bunch of people ask me where I bought it. It was just what I needed.

Among producers, his name remains the simile of choice. If some hotshot studio whiz emerges in, say, hip-hop, he's inevitably labeled "the Phil Spector of rap." That's quite a statement given that decades have passed since this boy from the Bronx remodeled rock & roll to suit his own visions of grandeur. The story of the girl-group auteur is a fascinating one. Spector composed a No. 1 hit at 17 (the Teddy Bears' "To Know Him Is to Love Him," its title inspired by the inscription on his father's tombstone). By 19 he was head of A&R for Atlantic Records. By the time he was 22, he'd founded his own label (Philles) and was churning out Wall of Sound hits at an unprecedented clip, beginning with the Crystals' "He's a Rebel." The four-disc Back to Mono befits its singular subject in both presentation (the richly annotated booklet includes a piece by Tom Wolfe) and content (60 songs cut between 1958 and 1969, plus the entire classic Yuletide LP A Christmas Gift for You). --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars Greatest bargain.......2007-05-16

A few months ago I ordered this set for only about $20 & it is the best CD bargain I've ever had. This set originally sold for about $75 back in the 90's (glad I waited to buy it!)& I keep wondering why it's so cheap now. (Is Spector not allowed to make money on his music anymore?) It is a BIG set in an LP size box (I store it with my old LPs on my shelf),comes with a great big book printed on high quality paper, comes with the Christmas album & even a button. Only thing not big about this set is the sound quality, it's typical 80s & early 90s thin-sounding CD quality, not exactly what I'd call a wall of sound. Also the book has the lyrics to all the songs except the ones on the Christmas album. So if you can get past the fact that Spector may have killed someone 40 years after these recordings (if he did,how could he? He produced John Lennon's "Imagine" for goodness sake!)this is still some of the 60s greatest music.

5 out of 5 stars Cruisin' Music Extraordinaire.......2007-05-15

When I saw the "Back to Mono" box for 20 bucks, I first thought of the barrage of criticism that greeted this set when first released more than 15 years ago and, in particular, the near universal condemnation of the absolutely horrendous digital remastering that marred what should have been an unbeatable compilation. Then I thought, "So what? I LOVED this music 45 years - AUGH! - ago! This is the background music of my life! And a great collection! And I don't have much of it, vinyl or otherwise." So I bought it.

And yes, the remastering is indeed horrible, particularly when listened to through earphones. But if you can pump this music through a tinny 5-inch speaker, perhaps boosted from a '57 Chevy, it all sounds pretty damn fine. So: don't play it on your audiophile equipment: my vintage boom box does the music all the honor it requires.

And what music. A lot of this stuff didn't chart in the New York metropolitan area, so I'd never heard several tracks, but it's all vintage, no filler, hits and non-hits, lots of Ronnie Spector and the Ronnettes, the Crystals, and fewer, but important, sides from Curtis Lee), Ben E. King, Bob B. Soxx, the Righteous Brothers, the majestic Tina Turner and that sidekick of hers, and, of course, the patented Spector Wall of Sound, complete with timpani, maracas, glockenspiels, strings, horns, full brass section, yackety sax, everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink. On the tree of rock, Phil Spector is a taproot (and Bruce Springsteen the most celebrated emulator/branch).

But let's be serious: these are very basic sentiments, harking back to a very different, much simpler time, before Vietnam, Watergate, and universal irony really invaded our consciousness (the first 29 tracks before the Kennedy assassination). The Spector chronology tracks along through LBJ's "Great Society" and civil rights legislation, Nixon, and the onset of cynicism, skepticism, and the beginning of a much more complicated social and political fabric. Through all this, we underestimate the role this and other top-forty music played in shaping our imaginations: it played, constantly, to GROUPS of people in packed cars, at parties and dances, not to one solitary listener through iPod earphones, shaped romantic vocabularies, taught kids how to say "I love you" and how to rebel against parents who screamed "that guy's no good!" My wife's parents.

In short, this music and its peer recordings helped fill in pieces of our emotional identities. In this set we hear lots of 16 year olds pouring out their hearts into diaries via girl-group doo-wop. From the Righteous Brothers, a more mature, wistful kind of heartbreak with full choirs of strings. And from Ike and Tina, my god - River Deep, Mountain High has enough emotional energy to blow a bank of Marshalls, a clear high-point on a collection of high points.

The 96-page booklet is almost worth the price of the box. I didn't need the lyrics - many of them, goofy, saccharine, maudlin, trite as can be, are grafted into my brain, courtesy of that Chevy speaker - but the photos of those wonderful, innocent, vibrant faces, the essays (one by Tom Wolfe), and the discography are all splendid.

So: if you've ever loved this music - that's a significant qualifier: my kids (all in 20s and 30s) think it's virtually unadulterated corn (with the exception of River Deep, Loving Feeling, and a few other tracks) - forget about the atrocious remastering. (I'll bet Rhino will take care of that, sooner or later, and we'll hear these in gorgeous, layered monaural.) Just buy this now while you can get all four discs, the big booklet, and the huge box for 20 dollars or less. Then boogaloo or slow-dance your baby to these legendary tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Musical History.......2007-05-13

With his name in the news, it is easy to dismiss Phil Spector for current accusations, but you can never deny his place is Rock'N'Roll pantheon of musical touchstones.

This collection is an absolute must have for all those who love great rock and roll and the extras in this box are phenomenal. The booklet documenting these historic recordings is amazing, as are the collection musicians that sat in on these sessions (Sonny Bono, Brian Wilson, Leon Russell, etc.).

Just having the classic recordings of The Ronettes (Be My Baby, Walkin' In The Rain, Baby I Love You), The Crystals, Darlene Love -- along with Ike and Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High" (referred to by George Harrison as the greatest single ever made) and the complete "Phil Spector's Christmas Album" -- makes this collection indispensable!!!

2 out of 5 stars $15 is about right.......2007-04-08

I have no idea whether Mr. Spector is guilty of the serious charges against him, but he stands convicted of allowing his retrospective box to be released with some of the muddiest, dullest mastering in memory. Sound-wise, a total mess. Of course, many of the tracks are indispensable.

5 out of 5 stars 60 classic "Spector" produced tunes + His Christmas Album You'll get your "Phil" here with this awesome 4 CD Set!!!.......2007-03-25

With its rich film catalog, Disney has a natural advantage when it comes to expanding into musical theater. But 1999's Tarzan wasn't the very best choice for a stage adaptation. Unlike, say, Beauty and the Beast, whose score was written by show-tune vets, Tarzan was associated with a musical-theater newbie, Phil Collins, who expanded his original score for the show, writing nine new numbers in addition to the five from the movie. But while he does come up with agreeable pop melodies (as, for instance, the hit "You'll Be in My Heart" and the new "Waiting for This Moment" and "For the First Time"), his greenness shows in the lyrics, which tend to spell things out way too much ("In learning you will teach/And in teaching you will learn," etc.) This CD certainly is kid-friendly, but unlike the best Disney material, it lacks that extra layer that would entice adults as well. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-06-12

Every song is excellent. If you saw the play, this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-04-03

I'm hoping that someday there will be a touring company of Tarzan that will be coming to Chicago, so I wanted to have the Broadway cast recording so that I would know the songs that were added to the Broadway show to help expand the animated film. I know that the songs from the movie are amazing, and hopefully, so are the new ones. With Phil Collins doing the new songs for the Broadway show, it will be awesome.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this music.......2007-01-30

I was very excited to hear that "Tarzan," one of my favorite Disney movies was being made into a musical. Being a theatre major in school, I had to buy the soundtrack as soon as I found out. The music was beautifully written, the singers all sound wonderful, and frankly, I can't wait to see the show!! I have read some reviews before I bought it and one thing that really bothered me was some close-minded person who complained that the lyrics didn't rhyme. Well, no, not all of it does, but that's what makes this music so beautiful. People always automatically think that lyrics have to rhyme, but I find the best songs to be where the lyrics don't necessarily rhyme and the music is beautiful; songs like the ones in this show. I highly recommend this soundtrack to everyone.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite there........2007-01-17

While some of the numbers were really great. Its evident that Broadway isn't Phil Collins calling. As an album it meets expectations, as a big production-its not quite as great as it should and could be. He has yet to expand some of the songs and make them into typical big broadway numbers. Theres too much pop in it, the music and lyrics are too simple. Collins music is missing an element if you were to look at it as a broadway production. It sounds virtually the same as the Disney, with just some different intrumentals-not good as a show. I think this show has the potential to be absolutely mind blowing if they heighten everything.

5 out of 5 stars Phil Collins is the best........2007-01-12

I like Phil Collins work, the music he write and sing and also the music he play (like in the Big Band with A Hot Night in Paris). He is truly a musician. And now he sorprise me with this production. Although he doesn't sing in it (only the bonus track), if you like Phil Collins and Disney this is a most have.

If anyone belongs in the "Whatever Happened To?" category of a game show, it's Phil Collins. Back in the 1980s, Collins was everywhere, having retinkered Genesis into a smooth, hit-making machine and embarking on a solo career that redefined adult contemporary music. He's still been busy, but nowhere near the spotlight. His latest project has been writing five songs for Disney's animated Tarzan. "You' ll Be in My Heart"--presented here in two versions, one with actress Glenn Close--is exactly the sort of ersatz orchestrated power ballad you expect from this sentimental guy. A duet with 'N Sync in "Trashin' the Camp" (also issued in two versions) is Phil's concession to the kids. Producer Mark Mancina's instrumental score mixes the expectant ambient sounds of the jungle with the slowly unfolding sounds of daybreak and jungle rhythms (provided by Collins on drums) that denote inevitable conflict. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Out of the mouths of babes...........2007-05-07

For my granddaughters 3rd birthday in march of this year, I bought her this Tarzan soundtrack. She loved the movie and would let the credits run, just to hear the music. I'm proud to say she knows all the songs and sings along. She loves the Tarzan soundtrack, it is the only cd that is played in my daughters car.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Soundtracks in the Music Industry!.......2006-12-05

This soundtrack is incredible. Phil Collins is a terrific singer (one of my personal favorites, as a matter of fact), and whoever composed the instrumental music is a genius. There's not a single song on this entire CD that I do not like. The whole thing gives me chills nearly every time I listen to it, and that's a good thing. So if you haven't heard this soundtrack yet, then take my advice and listen to it. It really is awesome, and it is worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Disney's Epic Jungle Soundtrack.......2006-11-16

In my personal opinion, this is the greatest modern Disney soundtrack around. To me it captured the atmosphere of "Tarzan" perfectly. Both Phil Collins and Mark Mancina did a wonderful job of harnessing the "wildness" of this film and put it to music. Collins has proven with this album that he has not lost a step. Channeling his inner "tribal" child, he cranked out some of the most memorable songs in Disney history as of late. "You'll Be In My Heart," "Son Of Man" and "Two Worlds" are epic pop tunes. They have definite staying power. My personal favorite, "Strangers Like Me," fits the film perfectly as Tarzan attempts to make sense of his new acquaintances in the jungle. Another wonderful tune is the film version of "Trashin' The Camp." This disc also contains a studio track of "Trashin' The Camp" performed by Collins and N'Sync, but it just isn't as fun as the film's version.

Mark Mancina guides the emotional rollercoaster of the film expertly with his score. My personal favorite is "The Gorillas."

Of course, no album about Tarzan would be complete without his signature yell. You'll find it at the end of the album on the "Two Worlds" finale.

If you enjoy tribal music, percussion, or simply a lot of well-choreographed noise, the "Tarzan" soundtrack will be a perfect additon to your collection.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good Soundtrack.......2006-07-27

Well, this soundtrack is great - all the songs my daughter and I love from the movie are there, and it's great to hear them. There are two versions of "Trashin the Camp" - the song by the gorillas playing items in the camp - but one we didn't like much is a studio mix, not in character voices or from the movie. It doesn't work for us!

5 out of 5 stars Phil goes ape in this terrific album!.......2005-12-08

This is Phil Collins at his abslolute best! You will have your Phil listening desires satisfied. This is a great CD.PERIOD! You won't go wrong buying this incredibly well done album. If you're hesitant to buy it, DO NOT DELAY!!!!! Go for it!!

5 out of 5 stars Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeexcellent!!!.......2007-07-02

Quite honestly, I had always preferred to hear Phil do a guest spot every now and then on an established jazz artist's project, i.e. Geroge Duke, David Benoit, Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour to name a few. He generally gave an effective reading of the song in question but had this tendency to go over the top sometimes.

Not the case here, folks.

This is by far one of Phil's very best projects successfully blending R&B with top-notch jazz musicians. The musicians are quite simply impeccable which complement Phil's controlled, soulful, and soothing vocals. His renditions of "Might Love", "Ride Like the Wind", "The World Is A Ghetto", "Everything Must Change" are all alone worth the price of admission!!! You should also check out his "Classic Love Songs" and the project immediately before this. His treatments of such standards here are equally impressive.

Phil definitely breathes new light into standards elevating them from mere elevator music to a listening experience that is most worthy of sophisticated music collections. It also appears that Phil has finally found his niche. Instead of trying to snatch a sale with futile (and unnecessary) attempts at reaching a hip-hop audience, he has aligned himself with some of the finest jazz musicians around to create an excellent set which would nicely translate into a wonderful live show!

I HIGHLY recommend!

4 out of 5 stars A valid and pleasant album........2007-06-28

The power and beauty of Phil Perry's voice shine on this selection of classics especially on the Spinners' "Mighty Love" and a breathtaking take of "If You Don't Know Me By Now"..
On ballads like Tony Braxton's "Unbreak MY Heart" and Smokey Robinson's "Just To See Her", Phil Perry combines the delicate yet passionate vocal with SOUL.
A worthy successor to his first album of covers in the series The Classic Love Songs.
It's a valid and pleasant album that will appeal to both Soul and R&B fans.
Only a dash too predictable.

Amazon.com essential recording

By the time he released his third solo album, Phil Collins had become a near-ubiquitous presence on the radio, thanks to his increasingly mainstream work with Genesis, his own chart hits, and his indelible production stamp on other artists' albums. No Jacket Required did nothing to stem the tide of all-Phil-all-the-time playlists--which is fine, considering that overall, it's likely his best solo effort, ranging from the engaging rockers "I Don't Wanna Know," "Don't Lose My Number," and the silly Prince rewrite "Sussudio" to heartfelt ballads such as "One More Night" and "Long Long Way to Go," which features a vocal cameo by the (at the time) equally omnipresent Sting. --Daniel Durchholz

Each song on this album is better than the one before it - I had the album when it first came out and wore the tape to nothing with the continuous play - now I have it again and the CD is never out of the car!!

1 out of 5 stars Sti-Sti-Stinkio!.......2007-04-18

I actually liked Phil Collins until this album was released. He used to have some meaningful songs, like In the Air Tonight, but this is pure synth 80's pap that is best forgotten, like big hair, Dynasty and Chernobyl.

5 out of 5 stars Phil Fits The Bill Baby!.......2007-04-05

This is the best collection of Phil Collins music I have ever heard. I remember following him from his start with Genesis until he went out on his own such as with this album. Although this is an older collection of his music, I think that is what makes it so special. Phil is an energetic and timeless performer. Pure quality and a must buy!

One of the best albums of all time? Surely you jest. Just cause the guy happened to sit at the drum set for 5 years while Peter Gabriel sang does not make him talented.

5 out of 5 stars Offbeat enough to be worth your time........2007-06-02

This adaption of a famous Broadway play is a truly funky story with overtones of science fiction and some of the greatest music ever performed on screen. I never get tired of the soundtrack and play it often.

5 out of 5 stars A great album.......2007-02-04

This album contains must of the song fron 1986 movie. This movie is great the music is fantastic. Unlike the on the movie the song are all unabriged on the track. The final song one the second version of the movie mean green mother from outer space for reason I don't understand was abriged for the movie. The songs running time was drasticaly cut from about 4.5 minutes on the album to about a little over 2 minutes. This originally was not the final song for the movie. When this movie was original first the last song was Don't Feed the Plants from the off brodway play. However six months after the movie was first released the whole ending sequence of the movie with Rick Morransis, Ellen Greeen. Levi Stubs and Jim Bilusie had to be shot over again due to negative audience reactions from several people who were upset and not stastified with director Frank Ozze's original first ending. As a result of the ending being modified from a sad depressing ending to a lovely romantic happy ending the song Don't feed the plants and the footage that went along with it were instantly trimed out of footage and only a small fragmet of it exist on the dealete scenes and out take portions of the dvd. However for reason I could never figure out don't feed the plants is include as the final song one the last track of the album even though it no longer exist in the current dvd and vhs formats of the movie

4 out of 5 stars Little Shop At Its Musical Best.......2006-09-21

The film recording of Little Shop is the best recording of the score yet (despite missing many of the stage version's more superflous and campy ditties)The vocal arangements and orchestrations are the best and most appropriately complementary to the piece. They capture the sound, and spirit in full and with fun and excitement. The cast is superb, and Ellen Greene proved herself quite brilliant in her ability to adapt her stage performance for the small size of film. The performance of Levi Stubbs, criticized on this site, is actually the BEST interpretation and vocal performance of Audrey II to date, anywhere. It is the only performance to truly bring the role to life and is damn funny. The cuts and changes are all logical for the medium of film, and obviously approved of as they were made by Howard Ashman himself. The original off-broadway cast (yes, the show was NOT an official broadway show, therefore could not have won a tony for anyone) is the next best recording. But to those who harp on the film for cutting the stage songs, the original cast album is not the full score, and has cuts made as well. The New Broadway Cast recording, which had great potential and money behind it, is the full stage score. Yet the worst in orchestration, quality, and casting to date. Though bland enough to easily digest, it is no where close to the film's sound and energy.

4 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack.......2006-07-25

Nice adaptation of the show to the screen. Rick Moranis in the best part of his career. And having Ellen Greene preserved on film as Audrey is wonderful. One of the best musical comedy performances of the 80's. Too bad the original was an Off-Broadway production. She deserved a Tony.

5 out of 5 stars Little Shop of Horrors -The Moview CD.......2006-02-18

If you are a fan of the movie, then you will really enjoy this CD. It revives the memory of the movie in every song that is played. First rate soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Love listening to the love songs!.......2006-01-11

This is probably my favorite Phil Collins album. Most of the songs here are easy-going and calm to listen to. Perfect for listening to on a long trip. Listening to it on a short trip wouldn't hurt either. Or just letting the music put you to sleep at night is good to do, too.
