    Album Description

"For newcomer to the Bach-cantata canon, Koopman's series, which features a generally top-notch array of solo singers, ome of the world's best Baroque instrumentalists, and a superb chorus, coupled with crisp, clearly articulated performances, richly colored orchestral timbre, and intelligently, affectingly moderated tempos and expressive effects, is a perfect placeto begin." - ClassicsToday

Most of the cantatas in this last issue of Bach's complete cantatas were composed between 1730 and 1740. This volume contains—among others—the famous cantata "Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme" BWV 140, with the famous chorale "Zion hört die Wächter singen". Ton Koopman and his choir and orchestra continue to uphold a standard of tremendous vividness and joy in their immaculate performances of Bach's most impressive opus. The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, founded in 1979 by Koopman, are a group of musicians from all over the world with a particular passion for the Baroque. The Amsterdam Baroque Choir, founded in 1992, consists mainly of young Dutch professional singers. Born in Zwolle, Holland, in 1944, Ton Koopman decided very early in his musical studies to specialize in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, using authentic instruments combined with a performing style based on sound scholarship. Begun in 1994, this series was called "the recording project of the nineties" by The Guardian and was awarded Germany's Deutsche Schallplattenpreis "Echo Klassik" in 1997. The series continues to feature the scholarly contributions of Professor Christoph Wolff, one of the world's leading experts on the music of Bach. French soprano Sandrine Piau has quickly risen to the top of the Early Music vocal scene. Piau has collaborated with Philippe Herreweghe, William Christie, Christophe Rousset, Sigiswald Kuijken, Marc Minkowski, and, of course, Ton Koopman. Her recitals have received rave reviews. German bass-baritone Klaus Mertens is best known for his work with Early Music specialists and has been heard on more than 120 recordings. Includes an eighty-four-page booklet with extensive documentation and complete texts of the cantatas in German, English, and French.

      Album Description

The acclaimed series of complete Bach cantatas with the Amsterdam Baroque conducted by Ton Koopman, originally begun on the now-defunct Erato label, has been revived by Challenge Classics. Ton Koopman and his choir and orchestra continue to uphold a standard of tremendous vividness and joy in their immaculate performances of Bach's most impressive opus. The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, founded in 1979 by Ton Koopman, are a group of musicians from all over the world, with a particular passion for the Baroque. Their recordings have won numerous awards. The Amsterdam Baroque Choir, founded in 1992, consists mainly of young Dutch professional singers. Born in Zwolle, Holland, in 1944, Ton Koopman decided very early in his musical studies to specialize in the 17th and 18th centuries, using authentic instruments combined with a performing style based on sound scholarship. Begun in 1994, this series was awarded the 1997 Deutsche Schallplattenpreis "Echo Klassik" in Germany. The series will continue to feature the scholarly contributions of Professor Christoph Wolff, one of the world's leading experts on the music of Bach. Each set includes a thick, informative booklet. The cantatas of volume 19 can be divided into three groups. Four works (BWV 72, 88, 129 and 193) belong to the third Leipzig series, lasting from 1725 to 1727; five (BWV 145, 159, 171, 174 and 188) belong to the group known as the Picander cycle of 1728-29, which was not completed or has not survived complete; two works (BWV 51 and 117) belong to the period after 1730, in which Bach composed new church cantatas only sporadically. His first five years as Thomaskantor cost Johann Sebastian Bach unusual effort, as he had undertaken composing church cantatas appointed for each Sunday more or less by himself. He was not contractually obliged to do so, but he adhered quite strictly to this plan at least for two years and loosened it a little for the thrid yearly cycle! , which was spread over two or three years. Even so, Bach never got stuck in a routine, as he was constantly discovering new facets of the canata genre.

        Album Description

This twenty-second--and final--volume of cantata recordings contains two of Bach's latest cantatas (BWV 30 and 80), including the secular model for BWV 30 and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach's arrangement of two movements from BWV 80 dating from after 1750. Also included are the four Kyrie-Gloria masses of the late 1730s; they are very closely associated with the cantata repertoire of the 1720s. These masses are based on selected movements of cantatas dating from the period 1723-26; after an interval of ten or so years Bach reworked them, in most cases very thoroughly. Maestro Ton Koopman was awarded the 2006 Bach Medal by the city of Leipzig on June 5, 2006, the final day of this year's annual Leipzig Bach Festival. The award honors the significant contribution of the sixty-one-year-old Dutchman to Bach performance and scholarship. Koopman performed at the festival, which is run in conjunction with the Bach-Leipzig Archive, with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. Born in 1965, French contralto Nathalie Stutzmann made her debut in Paris at the age of twenty singing Bach, and since then her dark-grained, expressive singing has brought her to the forefront of her vocal category. The acclaimed series of complete Bach cantatas with the Amsterdam Baroque conducted by Ton Koopman, originally begun on the now-defunct Erato label, has been revived by Challenge Classics. Koopman and his choir & orchestra continue to uphold a standard of tremendous vividness and joy in their immaculate performances of Bach's most impressive opus. The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, founded in 1979 by Ton Koopman, are a group of musicians from all over the world with a particular passion for the Baroque. Their recordings have won numerous awards. The Amsterdam Baroque Choir, founded in 1992, consists mainly of young Dutch professional singers. Born in Zwolle, Holland in 1944, Ton Koopman decided very early in his musical studies to specialize in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, using authentic instruments combined with a performing style based on sound scholarship. Koopman's extensive activities as a soloist and conductor have been recorded on a large number of LPs and CDs for labels including Erato, Teldec, Philips, and Deutsche Grammophon. Begun in 1994, this series was called "the recording project of the nineties" by The Guardian in England, and was awarded 1997's Deutsche Schallplattenpreis "Echo Klassik" in Germany. The series continues to feature the scholarly contributions of Professor Christoph Wolff, one of the world's leading experts on the music of Bach. Includes illustrated booklet with extensive documentation and complete texts of the cantatas in German, English and French.

              Album Description

Dieterich (born Diderik) Buxtehude (ca. 1637-1707) was a Danish-born organist and composer of the German Baroque; he was organist at St. Mary's Church in Lübeck most of his life. Regarded at one time as mostly an "influence" on later composers, including Bach, Handel, and Telemann, Buxtehude has risen steadily in modern estimation and is now considered the most important German composer between Schütz and Bach. This two-CD set continues an exciting edition on Challenge Classics of the complete works of Buxtehude performed by Ton Koopman and colleagues. All of Buxtehude's oratorios were thought lost, and this is the first recording of the reconstructed original version of one of them, based on a manuscript in Uppsala, Sweden. Dutch harpsichordist, organist, conductor, and scholar Ton Koopman is universally acknowledged as one of today's pre-eminent Early Music performers, sitting very near the top of a crowded field.

              5 out of 5 stars Buxtehude's Complete Vocal Works--A Superb Start.......2007-06-06

Ton Koopman, the Dutch early music specialist, has previously recorded several excellent discs of Buxtehude's cantatas on Erato/Warner. Now he is embarking on the first-ever set of all of Buxtehude's works ("Opera Omnia" in Latin) on the Challenge label. This recording of the oratorio "The Last Judgment" is the second volume in the series and the first volume of vocal works. As would be expected, it's a superb start to the project.

Interestingly, Koopman has chosen to commence his series with a work that may not have been written by Buxtehude. This piece is included among other doubtful works in the appendix to the catalog of Buxtehude's works (BuxWV Anh. 3). Nonetheless, Kerala Snyder--the leading Buxtehude scholar--believes that it was the work that Buxtehude presented at his famous Abendmusiken (evening concerts) in Lubeck in 1682. Koopman says that he sees "no room for doubt" of the work's authenticity.

One reason for questioning Buxtehude's authorship of the piece is the abundance of simple, strophic arias. The recent discovery of Bach's 12-strophe aria "Alles mit Gott" demonstrates, however, that even the great Johann Sebastian made use of this form, which was more accessible to listeners than elaborate contrapuntal works. And, of course, it was the young Bach who made the famous 250-mile pilgrimage on foot from Arnstadt to Lubeck to meet Buxtehude and hear his Abendmusik of 1705.

If you already know and love Buxtehude, Koopman and his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra hardly need a recommendation. This recording represents an important addition to the Buxtehude discography, and it could not be bettered in any significant respect.

If you're not familiar with Buxtehude, I urge you to get acquainted, although I would probably start with some pieces that are clearly authentic and more immediately appealing. One such possibility is Emma Kirkby's recording of solo vocal music, recently re-released on Naxos. Another is the reconstruction of an Abendmusik--a program of varied works for organ, voices, and instruments--by the Goteborg Baroque Arts Ensemble on Intim Musik.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-05-02

Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707)was one of the most prolific composers of his time, his scope including liturgical music, cantatas and oratorical works for services and concerts, solo arias and organ preludes, fugues, toccatas, chorale variations and fantasias, and chamber music including nineteem keyboard suites. Though it is arguable that Buxtehude was Bach's greatest precursor, it would be foolish to think of his vast output merely as a preparation for Bach. Buxtehude's music deserves to stand at the summit of his age in its own right.
Tom Koopman's new edition of "Das jungste Gericht" (The Last Judgement) is strictly faithful to the sources and preserves the three-part division of the Oratorio.
In Act 1 of "Wacht! Euch zum Streit gefasset macht" the singing roles are assigned to the allegorical figures Greed,Heedlessness and Pride(three sopranos) and to the Voice of God (bass); in Acts II and III the solo voices are not assigned to any specific roles and show signs of inconsistency in this regard. The choir, which sings frequently, is 5-voice throughout. The instruments are limited to strings and continuo.
This is definately operatic in nature with some very dramatic moments. The performance is up-beat and never dull, and very well executed!!! As one might expect from Koopman. IN fact it's all outstanding vocally and instrumentally. The 3 sopranos had clear, clean voices with a truly lovely tone quality. The tenor and bass sang skillfully and very dramatically in many of their renditions. Robin Blaze, countertenor, handled his part with expertise, good diction and a 'pretty' sound. I would have liked to hear a little more drama from him, but that's not his style. This is the kind of music that Andreas Scholl does well because of his knowledge of German; he gets all the nuances as only a 'native' can do. Just my opinion. I actually am thrilled with this recording!!!If you are an early music lover, you would be also.

Ton Koopman and his choir and orchestra continue to uphold a standard of tremendous vividness and joy in their immaculate performances of Bach's most impressive opus. The acclaimed series of complete Bach cantatas with The Amsterdam Baroque conducted by Ton Koopman, originally begun on the now-defunct Erato label, has been revived by Challenge Classics. Born in Zwolle, Holland, in 1944, Ton Koopman decided very early in his musical studies to specialize in the 17th and 18th centuries, using authentic instruments combined with a performing style based on sound scholarship. Koopman's extensive activities as a soloist and conductor have been recorded on a large number of LPs and CDs for labels including Erato, Teldec, Philips and Deutsche Grammophon. The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, founded in 1979 by Ton Koopman, are a group of musicians from all over the world with a particular passion for the Baroque. Their recordings have won numerous awards. Founded in 1992, the Amsterdam Baroque Choir consists mainly of young Dutch professional singers. Begun in 1994, this series was called "the recording project of the nineties" by The Guardian, and was awarded the 1997 Deutsche Schallplattenpreis "Echo Klassik" in Germany. The series will continue to feature the scholarly contributions of Professor Christoph Wolff, one of the world's leading experts on the music of Bach.
