4 out of 5 stars sorry for its expensiveness.......2003-12-17

In Japan, CD is very expensive. So when I go on a shopping for CD, I always get the import one. This misic is nice, and also the jacket is, but too expensive because of IMPORT from Japan. I'm sorry for it. I hope this album release in ths US. But this
record company is now under the japanese Sony Music Co., so my hope would not realise.

5 out of 5 stars THE FIRST JAZZ ALBUM I EVER HEARD.......2001-10-30

I heard this album in 1965, when I was 16. Not a bad introduction to Jazz. The best piano player, alto sax player, and drummer of all time. I got hooked immediately. You know I was listeneing to the pop music of the day. I put this on and heard Joe Morello with that outstanding cymbal playing on "Let's Get Away From It All", and I was astonished. I'm still astonished from Joe Morello. This is the best quartet of all time. Three players who are leaders and the bass. I only like Dave Brubeck with this quartet, and the drummer is what is driving him. Anyway, Dave Brubeck doesn't need me to criticize him, so let's move on. I wil tell you that the playing of "Angel Eyes", is absolutely the best reading of this song available. Period. You will feel like you are in a smokey cafe. It's so bluesy; don't tell me Dave Brubeck can't play the blues. It's unbelievable. I would buy the disc for this song alone. "Violets For Your Furs", is also a favorite. Great playing on these songs. The only thing I don't like about this album is the playing gets tedious on the other cuts, but that's my opinion. You may love the playing. The songs themselves are the things that are not enjoyable. In general, it's a great album and it's my first. I looked all over for this disc. I don't care what it costs. I would pay anything to have this. I'm so glad it's available. Also, the playing is extremely user friendly for the new person first listening to Jazz. I treasure this disc.

4 out of 5 stars Brubeck Plays Matt Denise.......2000-09-18

That should really be the name of the album. Since of course every song on here was written by Denise. I guess Brubeck wanted to make another "composer" album after he made "Anything Goes" which was his Cole Porter album. And by the way, that also is a great album! Wonderful teamimg as always by Brubeck and Desmond. My favorite track on the album is "Will You Still Be Mine" which is also my favorite Matt Denise song. "Mine" opens up fast and swinging, with Bruneck introducing the song with a strong 4\4 beat. Soon afterwards Desmond enters and plays his sax in a way ONLY he could. The title track is played quite well with again Burubeck playing the theme. It's at a slower pace then I'm use to hearing it, but none the less, a great version. "Lets Get Away From It All" showcases how well Desmond could swing. After a swinging solo by Desmond, Brubeck comes in with an equally swinging solo of his very own. This is one of the best albums made by the quartet. A must for all Brubeck fans! After hearing this one, try to find "Anything Goes", "Plays Music From West Side Story", and "Time Out". A classic.

    5 out of 5 stars Angel Eyes-Dave Brubeck Quartet.......2000-02-14

Have tried to find this in CD format for years. Is as enjoyable listening as any Brubeck album I have ever heard. All of the 7 tracks are outstanding. Recordings ar excellent quality. Great solos from Brubeck and Desmond.

Short's review says it all: Sublime. Absolutely essential. A perfect work. And not only sublime, but Beautiful. Rare.

      5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2002-04-29

I love Bach. I love piano. I love jazz. This disk is one of my most treasured musical items...along with the 3 other volumes John Lewis recorded based on Bach's The Well Tempered Clavier Book 1. Import price, but well worth the extra money. Lewis, absolutely true to the spirit of Bach, works the intricate interplay between his piano and his accompanists into a musical stream that flows from stately to swing and seamlessly back.....always sublime. I doubt there has ever been another pianist who could so beautifully suffuse Bach with a respectful jazz flavor......it is delicious, sensuous, cerebral and spiritual. Buy it. You'll be most glad you did. It is such a shame that some of the finest music recorded in the last 20 years is of such limited availablility. All four disks, Volumes 1 through 4 are well worth tracking down.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great If Less Well-Known Brubeck Album.......2007-01-14

This is another of Dave's albums of music from a specific composer, in this case the legendary Richard Rodgers. It was released on CD in 2006 (along with Brubeck's "Anything Goes", another great album) in limited distribution. Sony, who has been among the most aggressive labels in re-issuing older LP albums on CD has done jazz lovers a great service by making this treasure available as an import from Japan.

In this particular case, they have re-issued Dave's original Columbia Records red "six eye" label LP by the same name (and with selections recorded in 1962 and 1965) but now in re-mastered stereo on CD. Also, since there are no online "sound samples" available for this album (at least as of this writing) and which are normally very helpful, it is somewhat more difficult for those who haven't heard the album before to know what it sounds like and make a purchase decision. I hope this review can be of some assistance to those in that category.

The songs selected for this album are classics from one of America's all time great composers for the musical theater. Richard Rodgers is of course well known for being the musician half of the great teams of "Rodgers and Hammerstein" and "Rodgers and Hart". This album consists exclusively of music from both teams (although mostly from "Rodgers and Hart"), as interpreted by Dave Brubeck and his quartet. I found that as much as I liked Brubeck's "Anything Goes" CD (released at the same time), I personally enjoyed this album even more!

The Brubeck quartet sounds as good (and plays as well) as ever and Sony's stereo re-mastering on this album is superb, as is usual for them. It ranks with the best I have yet heard on any jazz album. You will definitely want this album if you are a fan of Dave Brubeck's and even more so if you love the heritage of the American musical theater.

      5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2006-12-28

I really like this CD. If you are a Brubeck fan, you should add this to your collection. My favorite songs are Why Can't I, My Romance, and My Favorite Things. This is an email from Sydney Australia.

4 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorite Brubeck Albums!.......2005-09-24

"My Favorite Things" is one of Dave Brubeck's "composer albums". Brubeck fans will recall such titles as "Anything Goes" (Cole Porter), and "Angel Eyes" (Matt Denise) here the Dave Brubeck Quartet pays homage to Richard Rogers and the results, while at as satisfying as "Anything Goes", make "My Favorite Things" one of Brubeck's best albums.

We start things off with a fast tempo version of the title track, minus Paul Desmond. Brubeck at times seems as if he's about to go off-time, but never does. Brubeck fans will take note of the fact he has made a career playing around with time signitures. But Brubeck does get some good passages in. I like a lot of the chord changes and Brubeck's right hand does some nifty work.

The next track "Over and Over Again" starts off with Brubeck playing the melody, almost as a ballad and then things pick up as Desmond comes in. Wonderful interplay between Brubeck and Desmond should make you keep coming back to this one.

My favorite track on the album might be "This Can't Be Love". Brubeck plays it as a familar tempo but again gets in a lot of good passages. As does Paul Desmond.

"Circus on Parade" is one the only song on the album I wasn't familar with it. The quartet swings on it from beginning to end and the result is rather pleasing.

"My Romance" and "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" are the same version heard on Brubeck's "Plays West Side Story". But are enjoyable to listen to but I prefer "Girl".

Overall "My Favorite Things" is a very good album that demonstrates with made the quartet so popular. Brubeck and Desmond as usual have wonderful chemistry together and the song selection is a delight. If there is one negative thing to say about the album it is that there aren't enough songs! Where are the recordings of "Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered", "Where or When", "Soon (There'll Just Be Two Of Us)", "Lady Is A Tramp" and "Loads of Love"? But we Brubeck fans will take what we can get.

Bottom-line: One of Brubeck's best albums. Desmond and Brubeck are a delight to listen to as is the song selection. Fans of Brubeck should check this out despite it being very rare.

3 out of 5 stars Live in Holland 1960? - Long Trane Rides.......2004-07-27

From the track listing, I would guess that this is the recording of the Miles Quintet with Coltrane in Holland from March 9, 1960. The music from that European tour is characterized by long, involved solos from Coltrane, which show him to be well on his way out of the traditional idiom. If you like these loose and lengthy takes on Miles' live repetoire, the Zurich and Stockholm recordings are just as good. Incidentally, "'Round Midnight" is speculated to be from a different concert, as the recording quality for that track is distinctly inferior.

Brubeck successfully incorperated three major musical influences into his quartet; jazz, classical, and Bossa Nova. This album is a classic, yet fails to make it big on cd. (in America anyway) The most memorable songs on this album were the opener, Bossa Nova USA, and Trolley Song. All the other songs got good melody hoooks and good musicianship. During this time, drummer Joe Morello had developed some interesting latin rythms and drum beats. It's great how Brubeck incorperated this great style of music into his brilliant jazz, because Stan Getz Bossa Nova, is a little boring for me.
