Jane Birkin is of course best known in the UK for her 1969 duet with Serge Gainsbourg, Je t'aime (Moi Non Plus), where she panted her way to the top of the charts, however she has appeared in over 50 films, been a star of numerous theatre productions and recorded more than a dozen albums. Jane has expertly delved into her own past and handpicked a bouquet of different emotions for this album. A wonderful team of songwriters (Neil Hannon of Divine Comedy, Magic Numbers, Beth Gibbons, Rufus Wainwright, Arthur H, Dominique A, Cali and others) have slipped original compositions in between a few timeless pieces (including covers of songs by Tom Waits and Neil Young) under the direction of Renaud Letang and Gonzales, whose orchestrations are unmistakable. Singing most often in English, her innocent voice nestles as never before within a series of deceptively fragile arrangements, accentuated by Johnny Marr (the former Smiths front-man, who only gets his guitar out for a select few, like Bryan Ferry and Pet Shop Boys). Jane Birkin gives a lot in Fictions - a lot of herself, of course, and certainly more than enough to continue to please her audience on both sides of the Channel. EMI. 2006.

Fictions without the jet lag.......2006-07-26

I was in Toronto on business a few months back and was excited to be able to have this playing in my cd player. The song "Home" has some of the most thought provoking lyrics on what home means to anyone. The song caught me at a moment in time when I was "packing and unpacking" and thinking over what was "in my suitcase". Ok...she may not be writing these great lyrics but can you hold this against her? How about Joe Cocker for that matter? This woman brings a uniquely Brittanic spirit to the glass of rum on the rocks in which we live on this planet Earth with our troubles, blues, toils, hopes and disappointments. Stephen Stills may have said "the blues ain't funny" but who has ever been hanged for having a sense of humour over watching the ashtray get dumped into the kitty litter box?

Buy this cd if you want beautifully crafted melodies kissed against the caresses of a woman enamoured with Baudelaire lost in his suitcase among today's modern day city streets.

British-born Birkin, with her deep bangs and waif-like, androgynous persona, was an iconic 1960s sex kitten. Her exploits ranged from the three-way scene in in Antonioni¹s film Blow Up to performing one-half of her late ex-husband Serge Gainsbourg's notorious (in retrospect, also quite witty!) erotic duet, "Je T'Aime, Moi Non Plus." These days, although her trademark breathy vocal style remains as subtly elusive as ever, she has finally moved on to a mature and womanly sensibility. This live album features an all-Gainsbourg program, but his romantic, world-weary satires are now wreathed in sultry Middle Eastern instrumentation, which suits them remarkably well. The songwriter died relatively young, worn out by cigarettes and hard living. Birkin's interpretations, while based on inside knowledge of the man and his music, are filtered through a shifting kaleidoscope of private images. Here's a woman throwing a bouquet at her past, and how gracefully so. Turning heartbreaking events into today's patina is an art in life, and putting a talent towards its public expression is art sublimated. This concert recording is the most intimate I've heard of Jane Birkin. Beautiful French lyrics, most appropriately set to a intensively poetic Arabic soundscape and performed in front of a wonderful audience. This cd will unfold itself a little more upon each listen.

JANE BIRKIN'S voice remains a matter of taste,and if you did not dig her before,chances are you won't appreciate this live tribute to SERGE GAINSBOURG,her late husband.I for one appreciated many relectures of GAINSBOURG's songs like LES DESSOUS CHICS and AMOUR DES FEINTES in an ORIENTAL setting,which gives them an unique look,quite original in it's own way.Unfortunately,i do not like everything here.Sometimes,i feel like i am in THE FLOWER DRUM SONG,the RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN 1958 musical.It's a mixed bag.If your new to GAINSBOURG,don't start with this one,it would be a mistake.

Great score, poor vocals.......2004-11-08

While Jane Birkin is surely legendary in her own right, her vocal abilities are poorly matched to the wonderful, and demanding, underpinning instrumental score. Her voice often seems on the verge of breaking, sometimes off-key, other times, weak and breathy, but never sultry. This album may work well as an instrumental version, or, redone by the likes of Natacha Atlas, Alabina, Fairuz, etc... In retrospect, Dalida, for example, would have seemed perfectly matched for the vocal demands of this album. Bearable numbers include "Elisa" and "Fuir le bonheur".

Birkin has a limited voice. Gainsbourgh was a troubled man. When they worked together it produced unqualified magic. He was brilliant and she was patient. Thier work is touching and ethereal. Don't expect fireworks...just sit back and appreciate his poetry and her earnest effort to express it.

I could have sworn I had this one, so I went to look for it because I wanted to hear somehing on it (since I thought I had it) again before passing judgement on it. Didn't find it. Amazon's records say I have four ( count 'em: 4) of hers, and this isn't one of them--and I can find all four and Amazon is right! And I have on my four, among other things: Je t'aime, ni moi non plus; Fuir Le Bonheur de Peur Que; Ballade de Johnny Jane; and Ex-Fan des Sixties, all of which are on this one, and I'm not getting this one too. These just mentioned, however, and many others, I personally think she can sing well enough so that, as what they are in the first place, they're fine. However, on what I do have (which has Love for Sale, for example), she can be terrible in English--as to all of: the choice of song, how she presents herself and her delivery and entire style of singing, right down to and including the arrangement. Also, another one, she absolutely cannot sing which is NOT on the above track listings, and which I have on more than one, is La DecadanSe (don't you understand the song? either? ). Also, there is a limit to how much I can take (eternally? no, thank God) of HIS songs, for which reason A La Legere is very refreshing (and has several I like, notably: Les Avalanches, Les Cles Du Paradis, Si Tout Etait Faux, and Trouble, none of which were written by him, all of which are done well enough by her and everyone involved. Also, lets face it, unless you are glamourizing people with problems to such an extent that you are glamourizing their problems (or are doing that anyway for other reasons) you know or should know that: 1. drinking yourself into the grave at any age is to be avoided 2. ditto smoking 3. ditto drugs). The fact that someone with such problems (especially the first and the third, although the second will kill ya' too) accomplishes something, whether creatively or otherwise, doesn't make those problems acceptable. Same goes for "womanizing"--it's neither glamourous nor acceptable. (Sorry.) This kind of stuff, therefore, has limited appeal--but it's definitely not no appeal. That said, for something new and different, and just possibly better, and at least "now", of Jane Birkin, I'd try A la Legere.

Birkin is the only one to sing Gainsbourg's song. from"La décadence" to "je t'aime moi non plus" birkin is the only one to be able to sing these notes. La muse amusée, The muse amused. If you undersand french, you can sing it. You want to lean french, try her.

Serge Gainsbourg may be the most kept secret genius of pop music today,because he was french,this record he wrote for Jane Birkin has some of the most wonderful lyrics you can find in pop music ever,I've heard all her records and this is the one I like best.I don't believe there are many songs as wonderful written as "fuir le bonheur de peur qui'l ne se sauve"(run away from happiness for fear it will run off).The birkin/Gainsbourg duo never sounded better,and they always sounds great.

One of the most beautiful albums ever.......2000-05-06

This is the first album Serge Gainsbourg wrote for Jane Birkin after their divorce. A lot of the songs are obviously about the divorce. The songs are melancholy, poignant and very beautiful. For me this is the most beautiful album of the world besides Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys and Original Sin by Jim Steinman/Pandora's Box.

Jane's first record without Gainsbourg,at first I was reluctant to order it but she surprised me,this is one of the most beautiful records she ever has done,Philippe Lerichomme did wizardy with the arrangements,the cover is great,and C'est comme ca,the last song of the record should be one of the most beautiful and touching songs i've ever heard.

Early 70s French vocal pop.......2003-12-21

This is a collection of French ballads and pop songs by the famous chanteuse of the sensual Je T'Aime (Moi Non Plus). There are three duets with Serge Gainsbourg - the aforementioned classic plus La Décadanse and 69 Année Erotique, while Gainsbourg had a hand in writing and/or arranging most of the tracks.

The opening number Quoi was the theme of the TV series Cinecitta and the breathy English song Yesterday Yes A Day comes from the soundtrack of the film Madame Claude. In the song Ex Fan Des Sixties, Birkin lists her favorite pop stars, including The Birds, The Doors and Jim Morrison, The Moody Blues, The Animals, the individual Beatles, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin and T. Rex.

Je Taime is of course a gem and none of the other attempts at eroticism equals its timeless appeal. My favorites include the tuneful numbers La Décadanse, Mon Amour Baiser, Fuir Le Bonheur and Ballade De Johnny-Jane. Those who like late sixties and early seventies vocal pop like Mary Hopkin, Françoise Hardy and the early, folky Marianne Faithfull will enjoy the work of Jane Birkin.

With the exception of those I have mentioned, most songs unfortunately lack catchy tunes, rendering them less than memorable. But this album is still a pleasant listening experience and it is great to finally hear some of the other work of the moaning singer of Je T'Aime!

If you like GAINSBOURG, this record is worth buying because most of the best songs with JANE are there.It includes the funny RACCROCHEZ C'EST UNE ERREUR in which a sex maniac calls a woman and gives her his fantasy talk;the alternate version of the classic JE T'AIME MOI NON PLUS, and the beautifully sad QUOI in which JANE'S charm is at her best.JANE is the most celebrated of the so called GAINSBOURG muses, and she first met SERGE while making the movie LA PISCINE in 1968.
