In 2006, Danger Mouse is King Midas of the music world. He has an uncanny knack for creating jagged, dense, frenzied beats and odd, eerie, vivid soundscapes that never compromise the music's natural flow. Meanwhile, rapper and singer Cee-Lo, a veteran of Atlanta's Dirty South scene, has never been one to be constrained by hip-hop conventions, and is a willing partner in adventure. The result is an intrepid psychedelic blend of pop, hip-hop, soul, and rock that consistently challenges and delights. It's no wonder that "Crazy," with its modest riff, irresistible hook, and disarming opening line ("I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind") became a worldwide Internet sensation a full six months before the official release of St. Elsewhere. But that relatively simple soul-pop gem is the tamest track on this wide-ranging, often dark and introspective collaboration. (In fact, the duo considers Gnarls Barkley to be a wholly new creation, as opposed to a collaboration of existing artists.) "Everybody is somebody, but nobody wants to be themselves," Cee-Lo croons on "Who Cares?" He and Danger Mouse try very hard not to be their old selves as they creatively and confidently break down boundaries, but the brilliant cores of their musical personae--Cee-Lo's eccentric spiritual soul man and Danger's bold sonic explorer--remain. --Marc GreilsamerAlbum Description
Gnarls Barkley is the highly anticipated collaboration from Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo. Danger Mouse is one of the most important artist/producers in music today. "Demon Days" sold over 5 million worldwide and Dangerdoom's "The Mouse And The Mask" sold over 100,000 units. Accolades include GQ's "Men Of The Year" honor; Spin's "Eccentric Genius Of The Year", NME's "Hottest Hip-Hop Producer In The World", Entertainment Weekly's "Album Of The Year", Grammy nomination for Producer Of The Year, and more. Cee-Lo is a Grammy-nominated, founding member of Goodie Mob. He wrote and produced the Pussycat Dolls #1 smash hit "Don't Cha", and his two solo albums for Arista scanned over 500,000 units combined. He also wrote hit singles for Ludacris, Common, P Diddy, Trick Daddy, and others. "Goodie Mob" has sold over two million albums worldwide. "Crazy", from this release, is all over UK's Radio One.Customer Reviews:

im an australian who enjoys purchasing their music via the internet either via ebay, amazon, etc. It is usually cheaper to purchase music material over the internet but i understand that given that this requires time for postage i am usually patient. this is the second time i have purchased an music album from the US but the last time i ordered the item from ebay and i recieved the item within 10 days.
Im not sure what efforts can be made but to wait 20 days for a CD from the US seems excessive when other items are able to be sent in a quicker span of time between payment/purchase in the US and receipt in Australia.
This is my only complaint. I appreciate the range of products but surely postage could be arranged so it arrives within a quicker time-frame than 20 days.
Thank you

And this was playing on commercial pop radio? I gave the record a chance anyway, and man let me tell you...after the 2nd listen to this disc I was HOOKED! This record is interesting, soulful, edgy, thoughtful, original, and fantastic. A musical masterpiece. I can't wait to hear what Cee-Lo and Dangermouse do next.
Highly recomended.

There's a disturbing trend in the Northwest: bands are getting way over-hyped before their first full-length record (which is often mediocre and disappointing) even hits the streets. Seattle's Harvey Danger, however, deserved the buzz that their debut CD generated. Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone? was quite simply one of the best local records released in 1997. It has the pop accessibility of vocalist Sean Nelson's high-register croon (not unlike Jeremy Enigk), and the energetic and dynamic punch of a band--guitarist Jeff Lin, bassist Aaron Huffman, and drummer Evan Sult (The Rocket's assistant art director)--that has developed its chops together for more than four years. Harvey Danger have drawn all the worthwhile elements from '90s indie rock and created a sound that is at once their own, yet completely familiar. Lin's guitar is full and confident, ranging from full-on power chords to buzzing melodies, while Huffman frequently takes the leads with his fat, distorted bass humming away. Sult ably links the two with a minimum of flash and pretense. Nelson's clear-as-a-bell vocals and sardonic, clever, and frequently emotional lyrics are both the album's strongest and weakest aspects. Occasionally his verbosity overcomes the music and his almost condescending sniping becomes a little tiresome. However, these are minor complaints in the big picture, because songs like "Carlotta Valdez," "Flagpole Sitta," and "Problems and Bigger Ones" are true gems, and for a first effort, this is as close to flawless as a band can get. --Adem TepedelenCustomer Reviews:

Usually when you read that an album is "inspired by" a motion picture or TV show, you can be certain that the one thing those artists were inspired by was a big fat check, and consequently those records generally do not sound very good. But the debut collaboration between no-longer-underground hip-hop artists Dangermouse and MF Doom, allegedly inspired by the Cartoon Network's late-night stoner-centric animation series Adult Swim, is far better than it has any right being. Doom has one of the best flows around, and he's at least as smart as your favorite dictionary-digger. Danger Mouse's obscure samples are excellent, but this is just a fun record that's not trying to be more, or less. Character voices get worked in, and these are pretty cool, especially Shakey's send-up of the fake answering machine cliché. There're also guest appearances by Ghostface Killah, Cee-Lo, and Talib Kweli. When it comes to rappers hanging with cartoon characters, Mouse and the Mask is more fun than a Shaq attack and a Gorillaz record combined. --Mike McGonigalAlbum Description
Two of this generation's most respected hip-hop artists, Danger Mouse and MF Doom have come together for this album, inspired by Adult Swim, Cartoon Network's popular late-night animation network. Doom, with his near obsession with masked identities and superhero personas, and Mouse, with his murky, ethereal soundscapes that cloud men's minds like Mandrake, are the perfect partners for the project, and each has inspired the other to the finest work of their careers. "The Mouse & The Mask" contains character voices and skits from Adult Swim's most popular original shows, including "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", "Sealab 2021", and "Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law", along with guest appearances by Cee-Lo, Talib Kweli, and Ghostface Killah.Customer Reviews:

[adult swim]'s Commercialization (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4 stars).......2006-12-04
The Danger Doom album "The Mouse And The Mask" was good to listen to. Most of MF Doom's rhymes are good to listen to (a better move over that "Madvillany" album if you ask me). His flow was consistant throughout this album. Danger Doom's production is good too. This was the first time I hear his production, and it was very impressive.
What I like most about this album is the cameos by the cartoon characters themselves. Master Shake appears on a few tracks leaving voice mail messages cussing out Danger Mouse for not letting him rhyme. Meatwad and Brak spits a few rhymes on this album. There are more cartoon cameos throughout this album too.
Guest appearances are few. Ghostface Killah appears on "The Mask" which is good. Cee-Lo sings the hook to "Benzi Box". And my favorite track is "Old School" with Talib Kweli, is perfect.
The problem I have with this album is the length. The album clocks in at about 37 minutes, making it seem kind of short. Also the songs are short in length too, averaging about 2 and a half minutes, not hearing enough Doom.
Other than that, this album is recommended to fans of [adult swim] who haven't purchased this album, or fans of both MF Doom and Danger Mouse. There are no filler tracks here. Just head nodding music. Enjoy.

Danger Mouse really shines on this album, making every track completely fresh and funky. MF Doom even grew on me, though, among my favorites would have to be Old School, with Talib Kweli, and Benzi Box, with Cee-Lo. However, the whole album is spectacular really. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the bleeping of profanity. I feel that the content on the album is more adult oriented, as is the subject matter from which it took its inspiration, and as such, I feel that the bleeping was unnecessary.
Great album, though, Doom, Danger, and all the others really took me by surprise, and it ended up that this album was far better than expected.

But honest injun, I only review albums that I actually own and since I've never ever thrown away a single disc ever bought - well you guessed it - I paid for it and still own it.
The airheaded pop stuff here is truly grating. My list of major problems with this release is;
1 - A band called Danger Danger puts out an album with the lead track of Naughty Naughty. The saving grace is that Naughty Naughty is a darn fine song. Really, the genre doesn't get much better than this. Pity about the rest of this album.
2 - This is the kind of band that Metal Edge magazine pushed to the fore - one of the most horrid segments of the mag was entitled 'The Way the Were' which actually had photos of the band members as kids. Really, pandering to the musical tastes of 12 year old girls is not the way forward. Then again, at the time D/D made a bit of cash so perhaps they're the ones laughing now.
3 - "Bang Bang - what's that sound / I gave you my heart then you shot me down" If Naughty Naughty was the genre at it's best then tunes like Bang Bang were the genre at it's most dire.
I have nothing but good memories of this band - they certainly gave us all a good laugh at the time. Despite the fact that in so many ways this only deserves one star, I can't possibly do it. These guys bent over backwards to make themselves seem so nice you wouldn't want to hurt their feelings. Not to mention the fact that Saturday Nite also rocks well. Two great songs and a couple of other good hooks just don't rate so it can't get more than two stars.

More than a mere rap album, Mos Def's long-awaited The New Danger combines hip-hop, blues, soul, and rock in an 18-track package that seeks to transcend convention. In that sense, it shares a similar spirit with Andre 3000's The Love Below or Common's Electric Circus, with mixed results. Mos's reputation has been built on the strength of his lyrical charisma, and songs like "Close Edge," "Grown Man Business," and "Sunshine" show that his skills haven't faded just because he's Emmy-nominated. He's already proven that he can cut more than just street heat--best evinced on the soulful, poetic "Umi Says," a surprise hit from his previous release, 1999's Black on Both Sides. Yet, the rock- and blues-inspired songs here, while by no means poor, are acquired tastes, given their tendency to noodle--they simply can't compare with Mos's cutting verbal displays. The album's length and sometimes clunky sequencing can make for challenging listening, especially when so many of his more experimental cuts come early on. New fans might find the album's eclecticism intriguing, although older fans will likely be a bit perplexed. --Oliver WangCustomer Reviews:

Newman is On and Off, as Usual.......2001-10-16
The fact remains, however, that when this score is on, it is REALLY on. The Main Title is an exciting track and the more emotional themes can really grab you by the heartstrings (though they undoubtedly hearken back to other works by Newman).
All in all though, for anyone familiar with Newman, two other scores better exemplify his talents. If you are looking for the unorthodox, "new age" Newman, go with American Beauty. If it's lush strings and sentiment you're after, go with Meet Joe Black (my personal favorite Newman score to date). Both will leave you with a much better idea of this talented composer.

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10
Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19
And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.
I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.
More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30
It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).
This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.
There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.
Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25
Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27
I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.
Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

D2's Best So Far.......2007-04-18
MONKEY BUSINESS well represents what such D2 rock is. It's catchy yet wild side rock is burned hot. SLIPPED HER THE BIG ONE pursues the wild side further and fourth track mellows with acoustic ballad well memorable and remnicent of similar styled Firehouse's LOVE OF THE LIFETIME. Then the next track roars with wild and aggressive rocker GET YOUR S##T TOGETHER which is also refained in the last track D.F.N.S. And their drive goes again in CRAZY NIGHTS an uplifting roller coaster rocker. EVERYBODY WANTS SOME is really a classic tone somewhat like WHITESNAKE. The next one DON'T BLAME IT ON LOVE again a taste of classic rock somewhat like BON JOVI and LOVERBOY combined. Then they surges with killer ballad Gun's and Roses might excel. COMIN' HOME. Then HORNY SOB is wow punk pop somewhat like GREEN DAY.It's incredible that they still charm us with the final ballad FIND YOUR WAY BACK HOME. Last two tracks can be treated just as epilogues and some listeners can skip them. In a nutshell, this piece of rock work could be the best the era might ever have got.
Verdict: Underrated yet a masterpiece rock of 1991.
Rating: 97 out of 100. Without the last S##T tracks this could have been 100.
Recommended for: Wide range of late 80s to early 90s rock fans who also love 80s and 70s classic rock.
Absolutely Over the Top Hair Metal Gone Wild!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-29
1. Monkey Business (8.5/10): Solid hard rock tune about getting "Naughty Naughty" if you will--most of the whole album's about that. Chorus is a little staid, but some verse lyrics are quite clever (it takes one to know one, and baby I've known some, if you know what I mean...) The "Ginger Snaps" bit is just a tom-tom intro with a lot of samples; they could have skipped that.
2. Slipped Her the Big One (7.5/10): Yeah, they really are talking about what you think they are...again. This is more of a groove tune, where the rhythm section drives the song. It's a little unimaginative and the chorus is kind of flat compared to the rest of the album. You'll either love or hate the keyboard riff that sounds like whistling. But the sheer amount of masculine bravado involved here is staggering.
3. Beat the Bullet (9/10): Things are starting to pick up now...a hard rock song that's more serious. Has nice acoustic guitars layered in on the chorus. Ted Poley, the singer, shines on this one. The "C'est Loupe" part is an atmospheric prelude with keyboards that works quite nicely. Vain used this title, too.
4. I Still Think About You (10/10): Ahh...the ultimate acoustic hair metal ballad! Did Poison do "Every Rose" first? Yes, but this is a great song with a lot of emotion and great guitar tones. Very similar to Warrant's "Heaven", where the chorus slams in suddenly. Ted Poley is very emotional here, and carries this song quite nicely. The lyrics are simple, but heartfelt. About a girl he broke up with, but can't forget.
5. Get Your [...] Together (10/10): Upbeat boogie tempo...and something you've always wanted to say to someone, I'm sure. Starts with a sample from TV or a movie, and just breaks into a hard rocking, fun tune. David Lee Roth would be proud. Go ahead, play it and try not to smile. You can't.
6. Crazy Nites (11/10): My favorite song, pure hard rock bliss. Think of "Fallen Angel" by Poison, except instead of some whiny lyrics about hollywood's lost starlets, a cool tune about hanging out with your friends and "looking for some action", not having any money, but not caring. Andy Timmons rules on this. They even end by singing a bit from Janice Joplin's "Piece of My Heart", which has a similar chord pattern. It's just the ultimate I-don't-care-let's-party tune. You can't beat it, you won't. [Any pomo cultural studies people out there? This is what Barthes meant by "jouissance"--now clean it up...]
7. Puppet Show (8.5/10): Andy Timmon's solo guitar piece. Starts out with some fairly clean chromatic jazzy runs, and then someone else interrupts him, only to tell him to turn it up. Then he plays a lot of sweeping arpeggios and fast runs. Well done, not breaking any new ground. He never stops to let loose and put some emotional notes in, but he does that in a lot of other songs, and you'll be impressed by this. I like the whole setup of it. "Andy??? Andy!!! Come on, man, turn it up!" Timmons is a much more versatile player than he shows here.
8. Everybody Wants Some (9/10): Do not confuse with the Van Halen song of the same name. This has the same sort of groove as Warrant's "Cherry Pie", where the drums carry the tune, and the guitars punctuate it. The funniest, most adolescent lyrics on the whole album, but they're totally brilliant. Parody or Transcendence? You decide! (Can't live without it my obsession runs deep...well I say screw it, my mom and dad do it, and that's good enough for me...) I nearly fell on the floor when I first heard it.
9. Don't Blame It On Love (10/10): Hard rock tune, similar to a souped-up take on Pat Benetar, but with a lot of backing vocals. More serious, but a great tune. My favorite moment is when Ted Poley sings "I'm more than a face, baby, I've got a name" and then, as an aside, he says "But you can forget it". His attitude in that moment makes the song. The backing vocals on this song (Whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh) are deep, which makes it very interesting and somewhat unique for hair metal.
10. Coming Home (9/10): Don't confuse this with the Cinderella tune of the same name. This one's better. A mid-tempo song with strummed acoustic guitar throughout. Very much like Motley Crue's "Don't Go Away Mad" without the hard part. (And that's a good thing.) A nice, emotive song that is a lot more low key than anything else so far on the record. This wouldn't embarrass Bob Seeger or John Mellencamp, though it's not quite Mellencamp material.
11. H.S.O.B. (6/10): Another hard, fast song. In fact, the hardest thing on the record. (I'm going to leave that one where I found it...shame it's not a long song as well....) You want to guess what it's about? I'm sure the title told you already. Van Halen's "I'm The One" is about the right tempo to match, but this is just so blatently adolescent in comparison. Weird thing: Andy Timmons uses a talk box (you know, that Peter Frampton thing) on this song, which actually makes it interesting. Casual listeners should stop listening here and be completely satisfied.
12. Find Your Way Back Home (3/10): Uggghhh. Does a hair metal album really need three ballads? Does it need *two* with "home" in the title? This would have been better left off the record. It's overly sentimental and gushy. The wheezy keyboard sound is thin and gross. When the song picks up, it does sound a lot like the Beatles. They were trying something different here, and I'll give them credit for that. The song's not so bad when you get used to it, but your first reaction will be negative.
13. Yeah, You Want It! (8/10): This is a RAP song, and it even samples the song "Naughty Naughty" from their first record! This must have taken an unbelievable amount of courage to put on the record. They rap with a style that's exactly like the Beastie Boys. One guy imitates Ringo Starr at one point. It takes the requisite shot at Tipper Gore, and throws in references to L.A. Guns, Enough 'Z' Nuff, and Poison. It has a guitar solo in it, which actually blows the mood a little. But here they are, letting it all hang out, having a good time without their sound. This is irony, yet it affirms who they present themselves as, making me think the album is NOT a parody. If this song is a parody, it makes everything else seem serious. But this song is not a parody. It's a farce.
14. D.F.N.S. (10/10): I still can't figure out what the initials stand for. Anyway, it's a quick (presumably drunken) acoustic party rendition of "Get Your...Together". The perfect way to end the album. Parallels? White Lion's "Bee-bop-a-lula, she's my baby" right before they break into "All You Need Is Rock and Roll".
...so those are my thoughts. This is one of my favorite records of all time. The production is great and huge, the guitars are warm and crispy. The drums sound immense. There's not too much reverb. I hate the album cover, and I almost didn't buy it because of that. A lot of good hair metal records have pictures of the band on the cover, or an attractive female model, or a hot car, or a cityscape. This one sort of breaks the genre convention as far as artwork.
Ted Poley left after recording the follow-up to this record. The core of the band is the bassist and drummer, Bruno Ravel and Steve West. Those guys still record with another singer names Paul Laine. Andy Timmons frequently joins them. I haven't heard any of their newer stuff to compare, but you can order it from their website.
Verdict: If you like 80s bands, and you like music that's about having a good time (and not whining "What's This Life For?" or "I'm Still Alive") this is great stadium arena rock. It's a shame there aren't bands like this popular now. The closest thing we have is The Darkness, but that's not the real thing. This is. Buy It. Amen.
As a personal note, I saw Danger Danger live at Club Bone' in NJ before they broke up. I have also played some guitar in my day, so apologies if the review is a little guitar-centric.
Not bad, but this band really has better...........2004-04-01
Hits: Beat The Bullet, I Still Think About You, Crazy Nights, Don't Blame It On Love, Comin Home, Find Your Way Back Home
Misses: Everything else.
If you dig this band, scoop up their debut, self titled disk. 10 of the 11 tunes there are great.
I also recommend, "Cockroach" - a disk that was slated for release in 1993, but Sony pulled the plug. It was eventually released by the band on their website http://www.dangerdanger.com in 2002 and rocks. They include two versions of the disk - one with original singer Ted Poley and one with new singer Paul Laine. Both are great. Hits and misses:
Hits: Still Kickin, When She's Good She's Good, Shot O' Love, Afraid Of Love, Goin Goin Gone, Don't Break My Heart Again
Misses: The rest.
