If you're not accustomed to Juana Molina's otherworldly, electro-folk musings, be patient. The Argentinean singer's artful approach to music may initially be off-putting to listeners who like their world music bright and bubbly, simple and shiny. Molina's Son is relatively straightforward in its lyrical approach (love, life, loss), but her musicality is complex, confusing, and often wondrous. Hushed melodies slither in and out of songs; looped choruses collide against animal sounds, and light percussive rhythms waver in and out of everything. It's an often-astounding assemblage of sounds, most created by Molina herself. "Yo No" is notable for what sounds like a barely-there, background beat-box; and "Un Beso Llega" segues from a lovely folk rumination into a chorus of meowing cats before snapping back again. "Malherido," one of the disc's most direct moments, purrs like a motorcycle that never takes off, perched on the edge of a musical cliff. This is heady stuff, but it never comes off as pretentious or forced. Molina's framework is calm and confident, which makes the experience all the more richer. --Joey Guerra
Album Description
Argentinean singer Molina was introduced to the American public with the release of her second album, "Segundo". A mixture of acoustic guitars, traditional percussion touches, electronic textures, and her disarming vocals make it one of the most evocative and original albums in recent memory. NPR's "All Things Considered" praised her, as did Entertainment Weekly when it named "Segundo" "Best World Music Album of 2003". "Sounds like Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier covering Nick Drake, whispering luminous folk tunes amid electronic thickets while acoustic guitars and pianos flicker like votive candles" ¿ Entertainment Weekly. 2004's follow-up, "Tres Cosas" was equally revered, as Jon Pareles of the NY Times named it a top ten record of the year, and it won even more fans as diverse as Savath & Savalas, David Byrne, Belle And Sebastian, and Sam Prekop. This is her first new material in over two years and is the first of her albums to be released simultaneously around the world, which should heighten the album's impact.

VERY, VERY BENDY .......2006-10-30
Much has been made of the electronics deployed here, subsumed as they are in the service of a mostly acoustic aesthetic. Their primary role seems to be to create a broader than usual range of pitch bend, imparting a dangling / hovering / suspended sense to the uniformly major harmonies. This effect is more overtly drawn than the once new now common and usually lush microtonal shifting used to fatten up most popular musics. As affecting as that technique proves to be, the electronics ultimately find more prevalent use as adornment instead of becoming a fundamental driver of the often loop-shaped music. Not that there's anything wrong with that -- outside the fact that such surface-oriented approaches typically become dated much more abruptly than works which apply their instrumentation with a deeper commitment to musical praxis. After all, there's nothing intrinsically anti-folk or anti-calm or anti-subtle about electronics, is there? None-the-less, Molina offers us some very pretty -- at times too pretty -- intonations, realized through that somewhat narrow and now nearly de rigueur, deliberate, blasé vocal delivery which issues forth only the warmest, sweetest assurances. "Son" invokes a calm, quiet and sunny morning. Which seems the ideal time to spin this disk.
Fantastic album!.......2006-09-27
I heard a brief review and snippets from this album on NPR and was very intrigued--enough to pick it up on Amazon. I wanted to pick it up that day, but I couldn't find it elsewhere. It was worth the wait! Haunting, melodic, lots of different influences, and infinitely listenable. At the top of my current playlist. I have sent it out as a must have to several friends who have all thanked me for the recommendation. Now, I am going to check out her other albums.
Canciones sin coros.......2006-08-17
On the surface, any similarities between what is commonly and reductively termed "folk" music (i.e., anything song-based and acoustic guitar-driven) and "electronica" (formless composition, laptops, synths, beats, bloops, etc.) seem tangential at best. Those who scoff at the notion of "folktronica" (or at least the term) have been given plenty of fodder over the last decade to justify their scorn. I'm thinking of the practice of gussying up already-finished acoustic guitar-driven songs with current-sounding electronic beats and hastily packaging them for public consumption.
Artists who have more successfully melded the two genres (e.g., Four Tet and Boards of Canada) have shunned song structures and stuck with electronica's formless compositions. BoC's "The Campfire Headphase" perfected this style, featuring looped and distorted acoustic guitars that formed the backbone of the Scottish duo's oddly emotional soundscapes. Intriguingly, Juana Molina's "Son" inhabits a halfway point between verse-chorus folk songs and amorphous ebb and flow. It's melodic but not catchy: these are songs without choruses. Molina's songs definitely stretch out and wander, many times beyond the five- and six-minute mark, but they're grounded in song forms, namely narrative lyrics, sung in Spanish with a lovely but unremarkable voice. They're acoustic guitar-driven and full of looped synths, layered vocals, and quietly busy electronic percussion patterns. They're also rhythmically complex and endlessly fascinating.
Because of its uniformity of sounds, moods, and tempos, "Son" features few standout moments, although album closer "Hay que ver si voy," with its interlocking melodic lines, is particularly mesmerizing. The record is strong and consistent throughout and possesses a level of detail that richly rewards close scrutiny. At the same time, its quietly hypnotic tone makes it just as successful when relegated to the background. Molina has succeeded in seamlessly blending the strengths of folk and electronica to an extent that few, if any, other artists have. Her combination of what sometimes appear to be disparate elements sounds entirely natural and almost intuitive.
Juana's Most Mysterious.......2006-06-24
Juana Molina has been putting quiet Folktronica jewels for a while now. Not renouncing her Argentinean moods, Molina chooses here to explore wilder shores of Folk, somewhat reminiscent of Animal Collective, or Devendra Banhart in subdued moments.
The atmospheres, although spare sonically, are still dense. Whispered rather than sung, these songs will seep into your body and, in some cases, even transport you.
wrong playlist.......2006-06-10
This is the playlist for Tilly and Wall - Bottom of Barrels. Another interesting album where tap dancing takes the place of some of the percussions.

Juana Molina set aside the budding musical career she'd pursued since childhood to become one of TV's most acclaimed comedians in her native Argentina. Her original muse may have been denied for seven years, but never forgotten; indeed, Molina has managed something of an unexpected musical delight here. Her breathy, gentle vocals haunt unusual song structures and the album's quiet, playful production sense like some restless ghost, wandering a sonic landscape that's as electro as it is Latin. That pan-cultural, less-is-more sense is rare on any collection, let alone on a sophomore album (Rara was released in her native country in `96) cobbled together between club gigs while living in Los Angeles. Driven by an insistent, plaintive guitar and producer/collaborator Alejandro Franov's delicate, bubbling synth riffs, Molina's unusually structured songs often seem to float in on a breeze and escape on a daydream. She's claimed the album was recorded in moments near the edge of sleep, and that stream-of-unconscious tack variously involves rhythmic choruses of barking dogs, ticking watches, and rainforest soundscapes--most so delicately rendered they sometimes seem an auditory illusion--seasoned with impossibly plastic washes of synth and carried by Molina's sweetly somnambulistic vocals. More impressive, Molina's songwriting sense seems as inscrutably subconscious. A rare, true musical adventure from first track to last. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
I must listen to this more so I can understand it........2007-05-13
The songs are wandering, with eerie occasional noises (dog barks, for example), and a lovely voice singing in a drifting style. It is wonderful and modern sounding. I have only listened to it once though, and I think it is a cd that you really need to listen to multiple times so that it can grow on you.
Female wisdom strikes again.......2006-08-31
This girl just makes mad every time i listen to her. Mad in a good sense, in a sense of dancing in the double moonlight barefoot, praying outloud to the gods of potions not to be drunk. To describe this music? It reminds me the little electronic whisper of Stereolab (especially Dots and Loops or Cache Coeur Naif with Mouse on Mars) or even Coco Rosie (or early Antenna) and then all the acoustic emotions of Vashti Bunyan as if she had holidays in Argentina, somewhere in Pampas, maybe with Sandy Denny by her side, making out for the pure joy of a psychadelic prevert man. A masterpiece of melody and enlightment, and in spanish (for those who not understand her, she sings pure, natural things and emotions, there it is, Vashti Bunyan again). Have fun, i'm having!
Surprisingly addictive.......2005-04-11
If you only listen for 10 seconds or so, Juana's Segundo would seem to be songs from yet another whispery waif, this time in Spanish.
Well, I listened for longer than 10 seconds.
I think the first couple minutes resulted in me making comparisons between her and Stereolab. Nice approachable songs with good rhythmic tunes and a nice backdrop of analog sound effects [which I'm a sucker for whether it's found in Stereolab, Pere Ubu, Einstuerzende Neubauten, etc.]. Then I found myself replaying certain songs digging up background sounds and seeing how her voice emulated or played with them.
At that point, I guess I'm not listening for just a couple minutes anymore. It's more like an hour, or two, or more. And I'm listening to a bunch of songs over and over again, as well as listening to the whole disc.
Well, I guess I do like the album enough to spend that much time with it. And then I found myself playing guitar along with a few of the songs. More hours of listening.
So yeah. I like and recommend the album. My Spanish isn't good at all, but it doesn't matter. The songs are intriguing, memorable and great to listen to in a variety of occasions or moods.
A sleepy voice with an awakening effect.......2004-05-12
This is an album that I can't stop listening. It brought back to my memory my childhood playgruond with the song "Que lluvia" which makes reference to a popular song in Latin America. I think Juana Molina mixed the sounds and subjects of the songs in a way so strange but effective that the whole album is like a single song with multiple faces. The lyrics remembered me those short japanese poems that reveal to you a big reflection with just a few words.
Consistently Beautiful.......2004-03-15
A mother who leaves her daughter.
A dog that never stops barking.
A preacher who plays with people's illusions.
Little stories and brief moments constitute the lyrical core of Segundo. The musical arragements (which compliments acoustic sounds with electronic/industrial/organ chords) all serve to further illustrate the stories portrayed.
At once fragile and strong, slow-paced but energetic, melancholic but hilarious, intimate but distant, Segundo has Juana Molina singing songs that will stay in your head like the most commercial 3 minute pop song ever, but by doing the exact oposite.
PD. I strongly suggest you try to find her latest album, 3 Cosas, which deals with the post modern world (in the lyrics) from a Yoga point of view (in the music).

Light, breezy, and atmospheric, Juana Molina's Tres Cosas is a sonic journey that is at once soothing and intriguing. The instrumentation is spare but effective. "Uh" glides along on acoustic guitar and electronica loops that mingle with her soft vocals to create an appealing soundscape. The Argentinian singer/songwriter fuses folk and electronica rhythms on the title track. If you don't know Spanish, it doesn't matter. But even if you do, the lyrics are not the main focus here. These 13 tracks of electronica music are not so much for dancing as they are for reflecting and relaxing. With her soft half-spoken/half-sung vocals and sonic ambience, Molina sounds like what you'd get if you mixed folk singer Suzanne Vega and Yes' Jon Anderson. --Ramiro Burr
Customer Reviews:
4 1/2 stars.......2007-03-20
this is an album of quiet hypnotic melodies. spanish songs sung by an angelic gentle voice. soft guitars. subtle violins. ambient electronics. it all blends into the blossoming of an organic whole that holds one in its trance until the end. a delicate, tranquil album. a repository of sweet sounds. great nighttime cd. highly recommended.
Not just foreign novelty.......2007-01-10
Yeah sure, you can't grasp the lyrical content unless you're Brazilian but that's not much of a legitimate complaint for this very intimate, vaguely electronic, folk album. A wash of electronic arpeggiations and looped-on-the-fly acoustic guitar melodies, this album is probably her best and most accessible. Salvese Quien Pueda and Solo su Vos are the most memorable tracks but the others certainly don't fall flat. This album is an interesting and somewhat challenging listen as well as a decent album (imagine that). You won't be disappointed in buying this. If you're somewhat of a folk listener or have a taste for the eclectic then why the hell not, huh?
If you enjoyed this album, 'though you didn't get the language, i recommend you to get something by the Uruguayan songwriter Jorge Drexler, whose works are sublime; you can also get "Tudo novo di novo" by the brazilian Paulinho Moska, or "Segundo" by María Rita Mariano. South America is full of great musicians you shouldn't miss, and language is a tool, not a wall.
Give a shot to Pequeña Orquesta Reincidentes. They're awesome too.
lilting?.......2005-12-09
I don't know what the lyrics mean because I don't speak the language but Juana Molina playing in a room is like lighting a smudge, it fills the room and pushes away a days lament and lets your positive thoughts float.
Beautiful from start to finish, a must have!.......2005-09-19
When I heard the track 'Tres Cosas' on radio one night I knew I had to get the album, and it's quickly turned into one of my favourites - Juana Molina's airy voice floats through a set of mellow and hypnotic tracks that flow perfectly from one to the next. It may create a more subdued mood compared to her album 'Segundo' but in my opinion 'Tres Cosas' is miles ahead of that one - it's more subtle and refined production lends it a warm, enveloping ambience - something that can be enjoyed more and more with each listen, even if you can't understand the lyrics!

Heart Inspiring.......2007-05-07
I loved listening to her (Eddie Ruth) voice and the music is heart inspiring and peaceful. It will take you another state and helps to calm those fears we have as we too get "Too Close to the Mirror".
Too Close to the Mirror.......2004-10-10
This CD is great. I have played this cd over and over once I received it. This song is a blessing to all. I found out that others have been searching for this cd also and I have recommend them where it can be located. I wish that I can locate the video to watch also.
Thank you and God bless
Too Close to the Mirror.......2004-09-22
The title song is awesome. If you are an old school gospel music lover than you will love the entire CD. The Holy Spirit ministered to my spirit through these songs like only it can. I am so blessed to be in receipt of this CD. I also plan to purchase it for several other "old schoolers'". I speak blessing over it now in Jesus Name!
So Many Times.......2004-09-03
I also heard Too Close to the Mirror on the radio one morning on my way to Church. It captivated me and I've been lifted and inspired ever since. I bought the CD and the more I listen to it, the more I enjoy it. But, my favorite is So Many Times. AND it's the way she sings these songs that motivates me. I now know every word to every song. Both my fiance and I enjoy this CD, and like Lee Williams and the Spiritual Q C's.....she's right on time with this one. I can't wait for her next CD.
"Too Close To The Mirror".......2004-06-01
I heard the song on the radio a little while back, and I was like, "I GOTTA GET THAT SONG." So, I searched and searched to find the album, b/c the stores were all sold out. I finally found the CD and I did not enjoy it at all.
"Too Close To The Mirror" is the best song on that album. I'm not downing Sister Bradford, because God has blessed her with the gift to sing, but I just don't care too much for her style of singing, but I do love the titled song!
God Bless!

Awesome Fingers.......2002-06-19
Who would have thought that a nice boy named Rosenberg wouldn't be Jewish? (No relation to the Rosenberg Trio who are also quite good). Jimmy's family probably didn't make the best choice in changing their gypsy name to Rosenberg to hide from the Nazis during WWII... but you won't make any mistake in buying this recording. I've had to replace my copy twice so far for various reasons (I think I actually wore one copy out) and would do it again in a hearbeat. Don't throw your guitar down in despair, just try to play half as good as Jimmy and you'll be doing all right (and try to forget that he was almost 16 when he recorded this). These guys would definitely have Django smiling in Le Hot Club in the sky.
Jimmy Lives.......2001-12-29
For those if you looking for more from Sinti, search for Jimmy Rosenberg. There are a few more CDs from him that are more or less available. One reads, "This item usually ships in 1 to 3 months." Maybe he switched to an Inner Mongolian label? It certainly is a wonder why he hasn't yet lived up to the hype he generated as a teenage jazz prodigy.
Sinti where are you?.......2001-11-29
This album is one of the best examples of gypsy/jazz guitar playing I have ever heard. Jimmy Rosenberg has gold in his fingertips. It is too bad that he hasent put out another album. Jimmy where are you? we are all waiting to here whats next.I was not familiar with this style of music until a cousin gave me this album on tape. I haave since worn that tape out and cant wait to get it on c.d..Dont even stop to think about buying this album.......Just do it.It will be the best purchase you have made to date.
sinti with jimmy rosenberg.......2001-08-27
This cd is a must for any musician especially guitar players who are into the style of django rheinhardt-but it is much more then that. The virtuosity of Jimmy Rosenberg at only age 16 is only believed when heard. Rosenburg is best gypsy guitarist alive. Listen to this if you want to hear someone take you to a new level of sound and guitar ability.
It's 2001 and still no new Sinti/Rosenberg!.......2001-08-08
The reviews below nail it. The musical virtuosity, warmth, playfulness and otherworldly beauty of Sinti's recording are all here. This disc held tremendous promise to music fans everywhere that the spirit of Django lived on but it has been awfully quite ever since. Undoubtedly, Sony dropped them after they failed to become the next Gypsy Kings. Jimmy where are you!?!?!?!?! If you don't own it, and you have even the slightest interest, snap it up now!

From start to finish it is great. Better than a lot of mainstream stuff. These guys pack an awesome and energetic live show and the musicians are tight. Favorite tracks: She's the Devil and Yolanda. Love the disco-salsa and cumbia-rock fusion! Elements of reggae also interesting and keep the album fresh. I have added these guys to my lookout list of emerging artists, there's a lot of great new stuff out there and these guys are a prime example. Way to go Locos!

[Mambomundo's CD Review: Musica Pa'l Pueblo]........2005-04-27
[CD Review: Musica Pa'l Pueblo]. Ironically enough I discovered Locos Por Juana on a CD Review by Christopher Ard who writes for N.O.sotros Magazine, thanks Chris! LPJ's debut CD was phenomenal and you ask any band and they will tell you that coming up with a "good" sophomore CD is very difficult and rare in the music industry. But I've been fortunate enough to see these cats live in concert and I can tell you that seeing them live for the first time was like seeing a revelation. Lead singer Itagui from Colombia is a poet with an infectious stage presence. Yes they are all that and bag of Doritos! So when I heard their new CD "Musica Pa'l Pueblo" (Le prendi una velita a Juana) I became convinced that Locos Por Juana is definitely one of the best bands to come out of Miami since Miami Sound Machine back in the day. Hats off!.......2002-10-28
Jan Narveson - University of Waterloo Gazette - October 12, 2002
Pianist Juana Zayas is unknown in these parts, and in her concert for the Chamber Music Society the question that immediately came to mind is, why?
In the short opening Romance in F# by Schumann, the warm, rich sounds she elicited from the KWCMS Steinway were altogether extraordinary, as was her evident feeling for this brief piece.
Without pausing for applause, she lit right into Schumann's Fantasy in C, a piece that has been played quite frequently here over the past few years. No one, however, has equaled, let alone exceeded, Ms. Zayas' account, with its splendid clarity at all volumes, its masterful handling of intricate passages, and above all, its conveying of a convincing account of this score.
The other masterpiece of the evening was Schubert's great final sonata in Bb, a work that has not been played as often hereabouts, but again, never played so convincingly. This performance struck us as generally magical. For one thing, it always managed to sing, be the song happy or sad, its surrounding material complex or simple, fast or slow.
For another, she has a wonderful way with rhythm, as in the scherzo that provides such strong contrast to the deeply felt slow movement; this had the needed spring and life, which is not a matter of velocity. And she managed to make the finale seem neither anticlimactic nor redundant. In a selection of encores too, by Chopin and Scarlatti, she demonstrated that she is not just another pianist, let alone some obscure unknown, but simply one of the greatest keyboard artists of our day.
Hats off!
Chopin played with wonderful skill, affection, and subtlety.......2002-06-26
I first became acquainted with the playing of Juana Zayes when I heard a radio broadcast in the early 1980's of a live all-Chopin recital that featured all the Etudes from Op.10 and Op.25 in addition to the second Sonata and the Andante Spianato and Grand Polonaise. Then a few years ago came the release of her recording of the Etudes and it immediately became my favorite of the many versions I have of these perennially challenging works. I am happy to report that this new recording of the two Chopin Sonatas and other works shows Ms. Zayes to be in top form, which means that she plays not just with masterful technique but also with great affection for the music, and with wonderful subtleties in voicing, tone, and phrasing. I have heard these works countless times and Ms. Zayes' performances are among my favorites, and a wonderful antitode for the sterile performances I am used to hearing from today's generation of pianists. High points for me are the Trois Nouvelles Etudes and the first movement of the great B minor Sonata. I recommend this recording very highly.

Straightforward reading.......2007-01-17
Lately I've been listening to multiple recordings of the preludes again for the umteenth time in as many years. Reading these reviews of Ms. Zayas work, I was salivating to hear her. Well, the pianism is impeccable and tasteful, and she sure does have the chops, but for me, her interpretations are, dare I say, too healthy, too sunny, a little too muscular. This is why I don't care much for Rubinstein's playing. I want more darkness in spots, a bit of morbidezza. If we are on the same page, try Tzimon Barto, who brings something really personal, and in places, exquisitely tender moments; or Argerich, who is, as usual, on fire; or Pogorelich, who, while often over the top and wedded to point making, has some very interesting things to say about the music. For a more mainstream, but also more poetic approach, I like Ivan Moravec. My two cents.
A wonderful disc!.......2005-11-17
Zayas's "Andante Spianato & Grande Polonaise" is for my taste one of the best i've heard. It's performed greatly with a stunning technical and right romantic attitude. Michelangeli's 1962 version is unbelievable but this one is quite similar. I like also John Bingham's 1984 version of this not so much performed piece. In my opinion is one of the best of Chopin.
Another jewel in this recording is the Barcarolle, and it's superfluous to say that Juana Zayas plays it marvellously. Great performance also for the beautiful Préludes op.28, op.45 and op.posth. I know these pieces thanks to Nikolai Lugansky's fantastic recording for Erato/Warner (op.28) and Michelangeli's (op.45) and i believe that they are very difficult to perform well even if they are short miniatures.
A wonderful disc!
So WHO iz Juana ZAyas??? Hmmmm????.......2002-09-17
If you haven't yet heard of sensational Pianist Juana Zayas, finish reading this review, then go immediately to her internet web site: juanazayas.com. Meanwhile, even without background information, you can fast click on whatever shopping site(s) you favor to get her Chopin CD recordings. The Opus 28 (plus) preludes is the topic here. The etudes and sonatas 2-3 are also available. Have you relished the old-school, golden-age-of-pianism recordings by such luminaries as Josef Lhevinne, Ignaz Friedman, Alfred Cortot? Have you found it hard to listen to their recordings transferred from the last century's 78 rpm disc masters, without heartily lamenting the primitive aspects of sound technology at that time? Now, suddenly, ...well not so suddenly it turns out: Ms. Zayas has been living in the west for 30 years, raising her 3 sons, practising like a demon, and expanding her repertoire so that when she could eventually return to the concert stage (i.e., NOW, HERE); she would have depth and breadth of repetoire... now suddenly you can hear Chopin played by someone with heart, mind, fingers, and ... most amazing of all, an elusive quality of open, soulful simplicity. Hers is a most enduring yet special kind of Chopin: she manages to achieve the balance, the poise we associate with Artur Rubinstein's later stereo Chopin recordings, melded intimately with the her own fire and Cuban intellect. Beyond surface glitter, beyond customary wowie-zowie forms of piano mastery, we burn with her in this music, if we let ourselves. I think if you go to one of her concerts, you will notice lots of other very good pianists sitting in the audience, ears wide open, maybe even taking notes. Yes, I know you are thinking: There is no dearth of available Chopin recordings. Yes, I know you are thinking, I don't want to listen to ALL of the etudes, or ALL of the preludes. O posh, O piddle, O fiddlestix. If you have wondered what the etudes/preludes might sound like, played all together as music first and etudes or preludes second; these performances will inspire your confidence. Indeed, I wager that performances by Juana Zayas will quickly become necessary to you. So, stop reading right now, get one of these recordings and return to the sort of Chopin that really does nourish a listener's intangible, peripatetic humanity. Join the club of people who will admit to being astounded that such a lady should be alive in our times to share her unique, even atavistic genius with us. I think the shades of old Cortot, old Friedman, old Lhevinne .... many other old masters... are smiling, perhaps. Chopin himself may even be smiling. I know I am smiling because I am listening to Ms. Zayas play Chopin preludes, right now, as I write this review.
A wonderful new recording of the Preludes.......2000-01-22
This is a wonderful album. I have been a fan of Juana Zayas' playing ever since I heard a radio broadcast in the early 1980s of a scintillating, live, all-Chopin concert. My impression was confirmed by her extraordinary recording of the complete Etudes, Op.10 & 25, made in 1983, originally on LP and now available on CD. This has always been my favorite version of the Etudes. Now Juana Zayes has recorded the Preludes, and this Music & Arts CD shows that she has lost none of the incandescent virtuosity or poetic insight of her earlier playing. Such transcendent technique as exhibited here is rare, and technique put to such compelling musical ends is rarer still. I highly recommend this recording.
A very fine recording.......1999-12-02
Juana Zayas plays these gems like no one else. Not even Martha Argerich plays Chopin as well as Zayas. Both play with heart and clearly have phenomenal technique. But Zayas doesn't sound as impetuous, out of control. Argerich occasionally sounds as if she is coming apart at the seams. As regards the review of "DB" of both this disc and Zayas's Etudes, I find that sort of criticism rather cowardly, to say the least. It sounds to me like someone who harbors a grudge against the pianist and wants others to think that she doesn't play well. Of course, his criticisms are utterly baseless, as anyone who listens to Zayas could testify. What is worse, however, is that his remarks sound more like those of an immature juvenile with an axe to grind than a serious music lover. That's ok, though: all are entitled to express their opinion, no matter how foolish they sound.

A more than pleasant surprise.......2005-02-26
A friend of mine, who is both a composer and a pianist, and who recently premiered his own Piano Concerto at the Heraklion Summer Festival of New Music, in Crete, rang me and in a voice filled with excitement said: "I found the greatest recording of Chopin etudes ever. You just have to come and listen to this."
The idea of listening to piano "etudes," which are, after all, nothing but studies to practice piano playing, didn't appeal much to me. I said so to my friend, but he wouldn't relent. "Just listen to one," he said. "As an incentive," he added, "I'll provide the wine." What else could I do? I went to his place and sat in front of his superb sound system as he opened a bottle of wine. "Give me a number," he said. "Any number between one and twenty-four." I said, "OK, Nine." (That's my birthday). And he just went ahead and played Chopin's etude number "Nine."
I was expecting a dry study. But that was not what I got. I heard the most challenging music I've ever heard in a long while. I was so enthralled by it, that we ended up listening to the entire record, accompanied of course by glass after glass of the most exquisite red wine you've ever tasted. A vintage Barolo. However, I know it wasn't the wine what made me decide that the performer, someone I had never heard about before, a woman called Juana Zayas, was indeed outstanding. It was her music making. Somehow she managed to make music out of the driest material I could think of. And what music! Intimately lyrical and yet grand and heroic at the same time. Incredible!
But that's not the end of the story.
After we had finished with Chopin and as he opened a second bottle of wine, my friend said, "If you thought that was good, now listen to this." And then he played a Fantasie in C major by Robert Schumann, also performed by Ms. Zayas. I was not familiar with the piece, but I fell in love with it at first hearing for it was unbelievably beautiful.
Now, anyone who can make me fall in love with a piece of music on first hearing, I consider that person to be brilliant. And Ms. Zayas had done not with one but with several piano works. Needless to say, I am now a devoted fan of hers and can't wait for the time when she will release one of my favorite piano concertos, either Beethoven's Fourth, or Brahms' Second.
Ms. Zayas, if this review gets to you, please, I beg you, get them recorded. I will be eagerly waiting.
If need be, I'll even provide the wine!
A Treasure to Cherish.......2005-02-24
I admit I listened to this album of Schumann masterpieces with some trepidation. After all, Juana Zayas, the interpreter, is renowned for being one of the best players alive -- if not the very best ever-- of Chopin's piano music. But then I realized that it was Robert Schumann himself who praised the early works of Chopin, and who called Chopin a genius. In fact, in Schumann's masterful work, "CARNAVAL," a series of short piano pieces, one of them carries the name of "Chopin." So I said to myself, if Schumann was obviously indebted to Chopin, whoever plays Chopin's music well should play Schumman's music as well, if not even better. I was not disappointed. Juana Zayas playing is outstanding. On first hearing, my hair literally stood as I listened to Ms. Zayas wonderful version of Schumann's Fantasie in C.
For many music theorists, Schumann is the very epitome of Romantic music. More than write music, he loved to evoke images with his music. Juana Zayas manages to do just that with her imaginative phrasing and secure touch. Not to mention her technique, which is both brilliant and persuasive.
The world of music should celebrate. For now we have someone who is not only to be treasured for playing Chopin, but for playing Schumann as well. Bravo for Ms. Zayas. I have only one more comment to make, and this is aimed at Ms. Zayas herself: What about a little Schubert?
A STARRY CROWN FOR ZAYAS!.......2005-02-18
Admirers of the awesome pianism of Juana Zayas exemplified in her recordings of the complete Chopin Etudes, Preludes, and the Bbm and Bm Sonatas will want to lose no time before acquiring this stunning new CD devoted to two major works of Robert Schumann: the Gm Sonata, Op. 22; and the monumental Fantasie in C, Op. 17. Also on this CD are the Liszt transcription of Schumann's song, "Widmung," and the "Romance." Op. 28, #2. Those familiar with Ms. Zayas' performance of the 27 Chopin Etudes will find her playing on this CD equally sensational and satisfying. The fearsome technical demands of the C major Fantasie appear to pose no challenge for her as is immediately evident in her playing of those terrifying right hand leaps in the concluding measures of the second movement, the nemesis for many of the finest concert pianists. Her all-encompassing technique is counterbalanced by the same self-effacing qualities that make her Chopin CDs, for all their virtuosity, so soul-stirring. Ms. Zayas profoundly understands the music she is playing. Her playing is devoid of distracting mannerism, flamboyance, and self-awareness. She lets Schumann speak for himself with no gratuitous "interpretation." From the passionate outburst of the opening measures of the Fantasie into the idyllic and triumphant measures of the daunting second movement through the sublimely poignant final measures of the "Starry Crown" movement, Ms. Zayas is in total command of this score and of her piano. In the first movement of the Gm Sonata, she wisely takes with a grain of salt Schumann's idiosyncratic tempo markings: "As fast as possible"; "Faster"; and "Faster still." But here again, as in her Chopin Etudes, her penchant for, but at the same time her ability to manage, breathtaking tempos demonstrate the depth and breadth of her musicianship and artistry. She has the innate instinct to know the "right" tempo for every note she plays. For example, a more profound and probing interpretation of the slow movement of the Gm Sonata and of the last movement of the Fantasie would be impossible to imagine. The transcription of "Widmung" on this CD is much more than an "amuse bouche: it alone is worth the price of the disk. Ms. Zayas' playing of these Schumann masterworks takes second place to none of the earlier, legendary recordings by Cortot, Arrau, Backhaus, Kempf, Rubinstein, or Horowwitz. An additional bonus are the beautifully written, scholarly program notes by Bryce Morrison.
Another great recording by Juana Zayas.......2004-12-16
The first time you come across any recording by Juana Zayas, whether it be her epochal interpretation of the Chopin Etudes (M&A) or her recital CD that includes works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, and Debussy, you usually don't know what to expect. But once you have heard one CD, then another and another, you grow accustomed to the high standards that Juana Zayas consistently delivers. This CD, featuring the music of Schumann, will not let you down either. The playing is clear, crisp, and passionate. After listening to this CD, you will feel that you have plumbed the depths of romaticism.
