Opus 111's first disc of medieval Russian plainchant and polyphony surveys the various styles that Anatoly Grindenko and his choir explore in depth on subsequent recordings. There are examples of znamenny chant (the Russian equivalent of Gregorian plainsong, more recognizably melodic than the Western equivalent) as well as the extraordinary indigenous polyphony that developed in 17th-century Russia. The largely homophonic strochny and melismatic demestvenny styles lack any concept of Western-style consonance and dissonance (chords are more likely to be built on seconds than thirds); partesny ("part-singing") chants have a simple chordal style very like Western fauxbordon. The disc ends with an 18th-century Tebe Bozhe khvalim (Te Deum) by Bortniansky full of the newly dominant Western influence--in this context, it sounds very gaudy (as Grindenko probably intended). --Matthew Westphal

What a load of crap!.......2006-09-10

Jeez....I love George Harrison, but this CD absolutely blows!! There's precious little actual music on here, and what there is bites the big one!! I'd LOVE to be able to recommend it, but unless you are a masochist who likes to drop cash on junk that you hate but force yourself to listen to because it gives you some kind of weird thrill, hey, by all means buy this! Anybody else would do well to steer clear of this turkey.

Not as good as the earlier CD version.......2003-02-17

I'd be happy to recommend this highly, except for two things:

1) The price is high for such a small amount of music, and

2) The earlier CD version had as its bonus track, "Prayer to the Spiritual Masters."

With all due respect to the late John Lennon and his widow, listening to them talk isn't why I would buy a CD of bhakti yoga chanting.

Play it, chant and be very happy indeed! A beautiful album from start to finish. The recording quality is excellent too. I do suggest finding the CD that has "Prayer to the Spiritual Masters" on it. It's the one on Apple Records.

Really Only Deserves Two and Half Stars/ Strange Indeed!.......2002-06-03

Its hard to rate this CD. I have listened to the songs and found parts inspiring, mesmerizing and quite enjoyable. Still, its not the kind of thing I would listen to often. I bought it out of curiosity when I found out George Harrison participated in it. Being a HUGE Beatles fan, I also found it interesting that John Lennon is included in an interview. Listening to these songs, I saw that this is really for those interested in becoming (or already are) Hare Krishnas. Not my cup of tea! I recommend you try to listen to the music at least once, however. GOVINDA was a top selling song in England in the late 60s! If anything, it is fascinating to listen to this and think about how the 1960s had such a wide range of musical tastes that were popular. Not only was rock huge, music from India was a "must hear"! I adore Ravi Shankar (and similar music) and was truly captivated by WONDERWALL MUSIC, George's last "experiment" of including traditional Indian music such as ragas interchanged with rock songs. This CD does NOT hold together since it concentrates on singing rather than the music (the instumental bits was what I was looking for). I know there are reviewers who go wild for this; all I can say is "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna" dudes! Party On!

George Harrison singing Hindu devotional Kirtans with a temple group from London, circa 1969 or early 70's.

There are better collections of Kirtanwalla (now*) - Krishna Das comes to mind: Try: "Breath of the Heart", or "Live on Earth."
*But back when George Harrison released this, none of us from the American suburban wasteland had ever heard the like of it! Catchy verisions of Govinda and Hare Krishna.

A collector's item. A good addition if you enjoy Krishna Das or Jai Uttal... but unlike either one of them.

A little surpprising.......2007-01-25

I bought this CD because the chant "Govinda" was on it and that is what I was looking for. And it is there and done pretty well, but like the few other chants on this CD they it could be more brightly done. An Indian version would be better if I could find one.
The "surprise" on this CD is that there are 4 music cuts... I skip the 4th each time I listen to it because it is so dull and heavy. And now that I have heard the 9 and a half minute cut of a question and answer period of George Harrison, John Lennon and Yoko Ono with a guru who promotes chanting as the way to enlightenment, I do not feel I need to listen to that part again. There is not really much good music to listen to on this CD.
Historically it is significant, I am sure. But I was a little disappointed to know that after George and John had learned TM from Maharishi Mahes Yogi, they went off to another Guru to find out another way to enlightenment.
Explains a lot about them.
I expect to sell this CD soon.

Ki Jai!.......2006-01-20

This is an exquisite piece of chants done by the members of the Radha Krishna Temple back near the beginning of the Hare Krishna Movement. Yamuna devi sings the Mahamantra like no other. An absolute must have for all true devotees and other lovers of Indian chant music.
