What you see is rarely what you get with Jimmy Buffett. While he may contend that he is the king of slackers, a modern day Dean Martin whipping up fizzy rum drinks under the palm trees in a silk Hawaiian shirt, this best-selling author and raconteur is actually the thinking man's party animal. His deceptively breezy lyrics and lazy charm belie a shrewd social commentator and a man not at peace with his world or his own mortality--taking well-aimed potshots at everything from cell phone culture to ancient Greek history to the threat of terrorism, as on the sharply ironic "Party at the End of the World." But having said that, all the unrest exhibited in these 14 songs makes for a far more interesting album than he's made in over two decades. Reflective, unstinting, and often nostalgic, the musician changes the tempo and the subject matter, swapping his usual languid island exhortations of alcohol and brief bikini tops for the fascinating emotional ambiguity of "Whoop De Doo," or the simple charm of "Nothing but a Breeze," which seems so autobiographical it's hard to believe that Buffett didn't write it. But the standout track is his chilling cover of Mary Gauthier's "Wheel Inside the Wheel," revealing exactly what kind of demons have been residing under the singer's ever-present baseball cap. --Jaan Uhelszki

Not My Favorite..........2007-07-16

...But this compilation passes the Buffett Fan Test. It is a good mix of new and old. I am waiting for the singer-songwriter to fully come back to some of his best works. Some of Buffett's lesser known albums are far better than this and I hope he soon returns to that style. It seems like a journey that started with Barometer Soup and just hasn't come back home yet. Still, for the true fan, it does deliver. Not my favortire, but a worthy addition to a complete collection.

Best Buffett CD in a Decade!!.......2007-06-29

After the commercially successful (but disappointing to me) "License To Chill" I was afraid Jimmy may continue down the "generic, glossed up country" road. I wasn't all that excited about this CD coming out due to that reasaon but to my surprise he has released his best and most consistent CD since "Banana Wind". Alot of good stuff on here including some excellent cover tunes ("Weather With You", "Nothing But a Breeze", "Whoop De Do"). "Bama Breeze" has a country feel to it but the CD never crosses into the "mainstream Nashville" sound that "License" did. Even my wife who isn't a Buffett fan loves "Weather With You". Excellent cover of the Crowded House tune. If you are like me and didn't care much for "License To Chill" give this one a chance. Yeah it's not "A1A" or "Changes In Latitude" or "Havana Daydreamin'" (what I consider Buffett's holy trinity) but it's a solid enjoyable CD.

A great CD that Buffett fans will enjoy.......2007-05-17

This is another excellent CD by Jimmy Buffett. The CD starts with a great song, "Bama Breeze" and rolls right along with great songs such as "Take the Weather with You" and "Party at the End of the World." A really interesting song is "Whoop De Doo" that features Mark Knopfler on guitar and every song will have you singing along and wishing you were somewhere in the Caribbean or on a beach somewhere away from the daily grind.

One song, "Breathe in, Breathe out, Move on" is a insightful song about Hurricane Katrina. The lyrics are great and really struck a chord when I listened to it the first time.

This CD is definitely worth adding to anyone's collection!

Another Good One!.......2007-05-13

Just another one of Buffett's great albums! It's a bit different than Cheeseburger in Paradise or Fins but it's good just the same! If you like Jimmy than you'll like this!

After listening to the album once and then attending his Frisco concert, I have really grown to like this album immensely. I really like Take the Weather With You and Party at the End of the World. I think we will hear these two songs for many years to come.

Not exactly a country artist, since her records lack twang, and too casual and intimate to make for a standard-issue MOR pop performer, Anne Murray's phenomenally warm, smooth voice has nevertheless secured a lofty place for her in both categories--and has occasionally brought her into the mainstream (read: traditionally rock and soul dominated) pop arena. If you're not a fan, or much of a country enthusiast, it's her '70s pop hits that'll make the package worthwhile. "Snowbird" is here, as is "You Needed Me." If you are a fan, or are looking for songs that hit only on the country or Canadian charts, there'll be a lot of key stuff missing. Investigate the 3 CD Now and Forever collection. --Gavin McNett

Anne Murray has such a beautiful voice. My favorite song on this CD is "Snow Bird." It is such a beautiful melody. Some of my other favorite tracks on it are: "Could I Have This Dance" and "Shadows In The Moonlight." Ms. Murray is such a multi-talented contemporary country singer. It is shame that today's throw-away musicians don't have a tenth of the talent that Anne Murray has. The entire CD is a masterpiece.

This is a super collection of Anne's best. It makes you want to just replay over and over. The love and memories are the greatest. A wonderful artist who just can't grow old.

One Song Missing.......2006-08-13

This is a great CD but there is one song missing from this collection. Walk Right Back should be on this CD. It was a wonderful song that she did in the 70's. She actually does it better than The Everly Brothers.

A trio of noted Australian musicians--Iva Davies, Richard Tognetti and Christopher Gordon--composed the film's score. They previously collaborated on "The Ghost of Time," a piece commissioned for the Millennium celebrations in Sydney, which came to the attention of Peter Weir. The director was so impressed, he played the piece on the Master And Commander set throughout production, and he asked its creators to write the music for his movie. The score interweaves "Old World" and "New World" music, reflecting the talents and backgrounds of its composers. Iva Davies hails from both pop and classical traditions; Richard Tognetti, one of the world's great violin virtuosos, taught Russell Crowe the ins and outs of the instrument; and film/television composer Christopher Gordon brought orchestral texture to the project. Given the period, it comes as no surprise that the score is infused with source music from Bach (Cello Suite) and Mozart, among other great classical composers. Percussion dominates portions of the score. "Drums signal the forward movement of the ship," says Davies, "that it's on a mission. It brings you back into the action." The score's biggest surprise comes with its use of synthesizers. "Peter doesn't make films in the expected way," says Davies, "and for that reason we wanted the score to be not what everyone expected. Peter wanted some scenes to have what I call a kind of 'futuristic' sense"--conveying the idea that these 19th century sailors were cutting-edge explorers.

Pretty Good.......2006-12-14

I purchased this soundtrack because I really enjoyed this music while watching the movie. But I was a little disappointed at the CD. Some soundtracks allow you to follow the entire plot like through the music (such as the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack). But this CD doesn't provide that. Several of the songs are recurring in the film but are only played once in the soundtrack. I would have liked the soundtrack to reflect the music for the whole film rather than just excerpts.

I give the music 5 stars and the CD 2-1/2 stars.

Good incidental music but not great listening music - except the classical pieces.......2006-11-09

The soundtrack for Master and Commander contains two distinct types of music. First there is the incidental music for the film. These pieces are heavy on the bass side of the orchestra and are often emphasized with bass drums and tympani. This music is very effective and appropriate for the scenes in the film, and I commend the composers for making a soundtrack that so seemlessly and effortlessly invokes the moods and excitement of the visuals. Unfortunately, these pieces are quite moody and slow moving - great as incidental music but not so interesting to listen to as straight orchestral music.

The second type of music is much more enjoyable to listen to. Those that have seen the film know there are several scenes in which people are playing music - for example, Aubrey and Maturin in the captain's cabin performing a cello-violin duet, or the sailors on deck playing sea shanties on tin whistles. The pieces chosen for the film range from Bach to traditional folk music, and are a welcome addition to the soundtrack. The performances are very good (including a cello solo by Yo Yo Ma), and the recording quality is excellent. Deserving special mention is the Boccherini piece (La Musica Notturna Delle Strada di Madrid), which serves as a second unofficial theme song for the movie. The piece itself is presented in its entirety, and there is a callback to the piece in the incidental music as well, which is a welcome ray of levity in an otherwise oppressive piece.

People purchasing this disc run the real risk of being disappointed - the incidental music works so well in the context of the film that you are likely to think (as I did) that the music is itself worth listening to alone. Unfortunately, I don't find this is the case, but the classical music that is included makes this a soundtrack worth having, especially for the Boccherini piece.

Great classical music accompanies bland original score.......2006-09-27

The original music to this film is dull, repetitive, and only offers the hint of good music at certain points during it's lengthy tracks. But what about all the good music you heard in the film? That was all classical music, which was used in the film incredibly well. There are three tracks in particular that save this album. The piece by Corelli is used as something the captain and doctor play together. It is one of the most beautiful pieces of baroque music of which I am aware. A second piece, Vaughn Williams "Fantasia" is the piece heard when the crewmen have to cut the line that might save their friend who fell overboard. It's a tragic scene and accompanied perfectly by the heart-breakingly glorious piece. The original piece of music is quite a bit longer than the version on the CD, but the original version also tends to drag a little in places. All the best parts are on the version of the piece in the film. The third classical piece from the album that saves it is the cello solo by Bach that plays as a theme for the galapagos islands. This solo is performed perfectly by Yo Yo Ma. These tracks make the album worth purchasing. If you already have them, avoid the album because the rest is not very enjoyable. If you wonder about this one, watch the film and listen for the music. It speaks well for itself in the film.

So Far So Good offers up 13 of his previous hits plus a new song, "Please Forgive Me," a gooey, Michael Bolton-like ballad. The album starts out with "Summer of '69," the appealing autobiographical song about the 10-year-old Adams learning to play his first guitar in Ontario, and includes "(Everything I Do) I Do for You," the synth-laced ballad that wound up in the Guinness Book of World Records after topping the British singles charts for 16 weeks. With its over-the-top, gravelly vocals, So Far So Good reminds one of Rod Stewart's 1980s work when he was coasting on past achievements. Canada can rock.......2007-05-25

This is a good Bryan Adams compilation and will please any fan. It's got his good rock stuff from the 80s. You know, strong vocals and a strong guitar. Definitely rock, but not heavy metal. Good music to have on the car radio as you're cruising along. The ballads he did back then, which are on here too, were good. Bryan's later stuff doesn't measure up. This is the heart of his music.

Gravel-Voiced Canadian's Best.......2007-03-20

I'm sure that the '05 release, "Anthology," covers more of his career, but for folks like myself who enjoyed Bryan Adams' career in the 80's and early 90's, "So Far, So Good" is probably the best compilation out there. Adams takes a lot of heat for his music and, frankly, I don't understand why. He's a very talented musician as his multiple hit songs can attest to, so I see very little room for major criticism. If you don't like him, don't listen to him.

I like him and have to say that this disc is one of my favorites when I want to remember the good ol' days. The disc starts off with "Summer of '69" and then rolls right into "Straight From The Heart." From there we are treated to a nice helping of Adams' best rockers and ballads. Personal favorites include "Cuts Like A Knife," "Run To You," "Can't Stop This Thing We Started" and "Heaven. It also has "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You," which many consider the beginning of the end for Adams. He went on to release a few other soundtrack tunes and moderately popular hits like "The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me (Is You)" after the release of this hits compilation and they are included on the later "Best Of Me." Hardcore fans may want to pick up that title or the aforemetioned "Anthology."

For those of us who only want the bulk of Adams' biggest tunes, stick with "So Far, So Good." It won't let you down.

A 'How To' On Writing Great Songs.......2007-02-12

Let the critics say what they want,Bryan Adams knows how to write a great hook filled song! This CD is one of the few in my vast collection that I give a perfect '5' star rating to and it earns every star

I'm a metal head,I grew up on Dio,Motley Crue,Poison,Kiss etc.. so why am I raving about Bryan Adams? Because he's that good.
If you look music of any kind from heavy to country to romantic ballads,any kind of music you will find something you can love in his music,it's timeless and his voice is never going to be considered the best of the best but that's okay because it fits this music perfectly,he sounds like the every day guy next door that lives and breathes these experiences

The CD starts off with 'Summer Of '69' which is just about the ultimate driving song ever written (the only competition is Don Henley's 'Boys of summer),it is perfect and I'm sure makes just about everyone out there remember their own favorite summer,from there it goes to 'Straight From The Heart' a beautiful love song,from there is one of my personal favs,"It's Only Love" a duet with himself and Tina Turner,this song rocks,it really overflows with feeling and fun,from there the only song on the CD that I feel was overplayed 'Can't Stop This Thing We Started' it is a great song but the radio over played it (it's not Bryan's fault his songwriting is so good that radio over did it),then another beautiful love song 'Do I have To Say The Words' and this and every ballad has a different feel and emotion which is rare in this musical climate,after that is 'This Time' which is about as much fun you can have with a song and still be legal,then 'Run To You' which has atmosphere and such emotion in the lyrics that you just know he (or someone he knows) has lived through that experience...then my favorite Bryan Adams ballad 'HEaven' which they used to play at my middle school dances so it will live forever in a special place in my heart,and then 'Cuts Like A Knife' which was one of the very first videos I ever saw on MTV,they played it a lot but it never got old,great song and still sounds as fresh today as when it first came out,then 'Everything I do,I do it for you' another beautiful ballad with a beautiful message,personally I always think of Robin Hood the movie when I hear this song (the arrow going into the tree is a visual that will forever go with this song),another great fun rocking song follows 'Somebody' and then right into 'Kids Wanna Rock' it's almost impossible to not smile when you hear these songs,and it's followed with a true gem 'Heat Of The Night' which is the absolute perfect atmosphere song (right alongside 'Def Leppard's "foolin")...my only criticism of this perfect CD is why would they choose to end such a fun CD with a ballad...'Please Forgive Me' is a beautiful song but should have been in the middle,they should have ended it with 'Heat Of The Night' let it end on a rocking note..but that aside this is what rock and roll and songwriting in general should be....it should be noted that Bryan has released a few other greatest hits packages over the years but don't be fooled this is the best of the best,his next attempt 'The Best Of Me' is very weighted down with ballads and almost ignores his rocking side...this is a perfectly balanced CD that will appeal to any fan of fun rock and roll

The Upside - This is how to write songs...Bryan is an expert...and it is also proof of why producers are so important to an artist,Mutt Lange is a genius (as his track record proves) the songs sound perfect,warm and yet crisp..there are no show off moments,just great singing and musicians that above all highlight the songwriting,what can I say other then perfection

The Bottom Line - If you are a songwriter,or want to be,buy this CD to learn how it should be done...This CD is everything that is missing in almost all modern music and it can be summed up in one 3 letter word - FUN! This CD is fun ....run out to buy this,especially at this price,donutman says so!!!

Just when you thought you'd heard it all..........2007-07-12

Don't get me wrong, I love music...but my tastes are pretty narrow in the overall scheme of things. I'm a mad electronica and dance music fan, like some more alternative rock, some mainstream...but not much. I also don't write reviews very often (probably more because I go on about other things instead and stay away from the topic at hand...oh well...

But then I came across this gem. My favourite artists are Depeche Mode, UNKLE, d*note, Cinematic Orchestra, Faze Action, Beastie Boys, Slowdive, Ride, etc, etc...I love them all...but this - this is something special. Yes there are aural soundscapes, yes there are gently evoked moods and rhythms (we've read it all before), but this is music that touches your very core. It talks to you and folds you into its melodic conversation. And THAT doesn't happen often. Buy this...and then buy everything else that Mr Schnauss has done. For what it's worth, I don't recommend music often, but this is absolutely beautiful.

I noticed Ulrich Schnauss' work listening to Internet radio 'chill' stations, and simply had to have it.

I've been listening to electronic music for quite a long time -- all the way back to Wendy Carlos' 'Switched on Bach', and have tried my hand at it a bit too. Ulrich Schnauss has taken his place among the masters of the genre, and 'Far Away Trains Passing By' is a must-have for anyone interested in electronic music.

His selection and control of sounds and layering is a delight to the ears. The mix invites you to test the limits of your sound system. The compositions are more harmonically interesting than most electronica artists and his rhythmic sense is subtle and polished, and not guilty of the awkwardness or formulaic tedium that too often burdens European artists.

That said, Ulrich Schnauss' work transcends dissection. It is the feeling of love that pours forth -- alienation, yes, isolation, that too, coolness and detachment. But through it all, love. This music is art.

I rate songs according to their 'longevity', and this is one I can listen to over and over. having been disenfranchised by the 'unrelenting' whining of today's 'Contemporary' (whatever the 'genre'), I appreciate music inclined to the 'experiential' rather than the 'self-aggradizement' of individuals void of depth and inspiration. whew! that having been said, the music of Ulrich Schnauss is not for the 'skin deep' or people afraid to be still. 'anger' has become today's plague, and it has infected every arena of every day life. the world needs to chill, and we need all the help we can get. Ulrich to the rescue! Far Away Trains Passing By is a welcomed 2 disc CD (includes bonus tracks) engineered with that in mind. 'Blumenwiese Neben Autobahn' will keep you within the 'posted' Speed Limit. 'Between Us & Them' whispers the promise of a new day. 'Passing By' declares our will to resist. 'Nobody's Home' instills that longing to return for those 'far away'. and 'Knuddelmaus' brings you home, safe & sound. I first heard Ulrich over an iTunes Ambient Radio station, and previewed several of his songs before purchasing 2 albums from Amazon. (A Strangely Isolated Place). I keep copies of both in the car. think I'll call AAA to see if I can get a discount on my policy!

Better than i had expected.......2007-04-23

i was just reading through the amazon reviews etc. and was lucky to have stumbled upon this cd. I must say i am absolutely taken away by the music of Ulrich Schnauss. I have listened to quite a few ambient artists, but Ulrich Schnauss takes the cake. This album is well rounded and you will find yourself listening to it over and over again, especially 'between us and them'.
give this cd a listen, you will not be dissapointed.

Heaviest Pantera to date........2007-04-07

Although I do not have The Great Southern Trendkill, I own every other Pantera release and can say without a doubt that this is their heaviest, hardest, most extreme album to date. It is pure metal mayhem, sheer madness. The only slow songs that we see on here are Good Friends and a Bottle Of Pills and the Black Sabbath cover- Planet Caravan. Good Friends is the only mediocre track and in my opinion is pretty unnecessary, yet pretty humorous. It's really hard to pick and choose favorites. I'd have to say that I'm Broken, Slaughtered, and Use My Third Arm are the best tracks. Slaughtered is incredibly heavy and catchy as hell, but it's Use My Third Arm that is really insane and sounds like it could be death metal at some times. I'm Broken has a nice, dirty, southern style riff that will no doubt be stuck in your head. Of course, the fan favorite-5 Minutes Alone is one of the other great tracks on which Phil's vocals are the real standout.

The whole band sounds excellent on here. Phil stays mainly to a low, heavy growl, but at a few points demonstrates his unique singing voice. He does some death metal screams which are also awesome. Dimebag is of course in grade-A form here and has some very complex riffs and trademark solos. Vinnie is in top notch form on the drums and his double bass is heard throughout and he even brings the ole' cowbell out for some parts. Rex "Rocker" Brown also does a superb job, and although Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills is the worst song, it does have a real cool bass line throughout and he puts down some sweet riffs during Dimebag's solos. Also, the cover that you see on the cd is not the original. They had a different one, but it was to explicit for the record company's likings so they changed it to this.

This is a must have, classic 90s album. This is their heaviest album and is also complex. It will definitely keep you occupied listening for all the time changes and different riffs. So if you want something heavy and different and you love thrash metal, go for Far Beyond Driven.

Undeniable CLASSIC!.......2007-01-25

I'm listening to it right now... Jan. 24/07... when did this come out? '94?! This is still some truly inspirational sh!#! Alot of people say that Pantera was their "gateway" band to more extreme music, but I'll be damned if this itself isn't some extreme music. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't this debut at #1 on Billboard?! Could that even happen today? I think not. This was more than just a step up from "Vulgar...", this was a milestone in their career. "The Great Southern Trendkill" would follow, and while it would push the limits of what their own fans deemed "acceptable", it was just that little bit outside their own boundaries which made it less accessible. Regardless of what they'd done or where they'd go, "Far Beyond Driven" is simply one the best HEAVY records of the 90's, if not all time in the heavily loaded metal canon. It's thrash, it's death, it's their influences in hardcore, in the old-school, it's so southern it hurts. Most notable is the fact that there isn't ONE BAND out there today that sounds like Pantera, and those that try (hello, Lamb Of God), receive either critical acclaim or pure hatred from the underground. In the 90's, and even today, it's hard to find someone who doesn't enjoy or at the very least respect Pantera. This is their "big break". This is the album I always turn to when I need to feel "metal". And really, how often do "big break" and "metal" coincide? That says alot about "Far Beyond Driven". Big in every way and SO metal. And one point I absolutely need to add... until just a year or so ago, I never gave the lyrics a thought, but Phil wrote some really great lyrics. Not "brutal" or "Grim" lyrics, generally real HONEST lyrics. That's that hardcore influence shining through. Where do you think all the mallcore kiddies and emo-core kids get this from? 'Cept Phil's honesty has nothing to do with heartache/heart break... Pantera was HARDCORE and his lyrics speak volumes about (at least his) passion, frustration, confusion. That was/is a breath of fresh air in metal.

Final glory before the decline.......2006-12-10

Imagine: it's the mid-90s and Grunge is everywhere. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Smashing Pumpkins rule supreme; Speed Metal is pretty much dead. Pantera, however, refuses to fade away. Instead, they release FBD as a gigantic "f--- you" to the entire Grunge/Alternative music scene.

While not as good as "Vulgar Display of Power," Pantera staked out their claim as the last remaining Speed Metal band of any consequence. Things went downhill after FBD but, in 1994 at least, they were still at the height of their game. While some tracks are weak, FBD is good overall and worth buying for any Metal fan.

An Average Album, not very "Pantera" like.......2006-11-12

After having reached a huge amount of success with thier 2nd album, "Vulgar Display of Power" Pantera returned to give us "Far beyond Driven" Now, I am not saying that the band "sold out" but the album certainly looks like it written to appeal to an even larger fan base. The opening track "Strength beyond Strength" starts off furiously, and then the album starts to crumble from the opening of the second track "Becoming". "5 Minutes Alone", "I'm Broken", and "Good Friends, and a bottle of Pills" are what drags the album down. Simple song struture, lack of intelligent lyrics, and more a "poppy" metal feel, are not very Pantera like, and thats a helluva lot of filler to start out an album with. The album shifts gears with "Hard Lines, Sunken Cheeks" which is the best song on the album. "Slaughterd is my second favorite track, in which Phil almost have a "Death Metal" vocal style on it. Believe me, he can pull it off too, as I have seen concert footage of him doing a Song wiht Morbid Angel, and he pulls it with ease. "25 Years" is a pretty strong song, and "Shedding Skin" and "Using my Third Arm" are passible, but nothing special. "Theories of Rejection" and the cover of Sabbtahs "Planet Caravan" end the album on a high note. So lets see, 12 songs, Six of them really shine, Two of them are so-so, and the rest are just plain flat out suck. That might cut it on any other record, but for a Pantera album, in which all their other albums seem to have almost no filler, its just not worth of anything higher then Three Stars.

The aggression continues with Far Beyond Driven..........2006-10-27

Pantera's 7th album is perhaps the most aggressively personal offering of their entire career but unfortunately this has its upsides and downsides.

The album kicks off with Strength Beyond Strength, it immediately establishes the tone of the album offering nothing but a heavy groove and brutal drumming throughout. Unfortunately the groove does not sustain itself for very long and soon it begins to show that was a wonderful intro does not turn into a wonderful song. Dimebag's guitar-work and Vinnie Paul's drumming are its only saving grace. The lyrics are nonsensical and Anselmo seems to be trying far too hard to find any real rage in this subject.

Becoming is the album's second track and here things turn completely in the other direction. Anselmo draws from personal experiences and delivers a truly menacing diatribe on self-image/self-worth set to a fantastically catchy and creative groove. Next up is another brutal offering and another staple in Pantera's catalog: 5 Minutes Alone. Supposedly inspired by an encounter with a fan's enraged father, here Anselmo turns the tables and places himself in the role of said character. Once again painting a picture of finding one-self in a hostile environment it is easy to see why the song appeals to fans of the band. The riffs are absolutely brutal, with no apologies or breaks and Anselmo growl hits a high mark towards the end of the song as his bestial growling of the chorus echo and slowly fade away.

What follows is one of the more self-indulgent offerings in Pantera's catalog. Good Friends and a Bottle of Booze must have seemed like a good, short "song" to give listeners a break from the aggressive barrage that the album has been building up to this point. However, because of the lyrical content the song comes across as some sort of in-joke between Anselmo and whoever he is directing these words at, if anyone. Boasting is all to be found here and Vinnie Paul's catchy drumming is the track's only redeeming quality.

Hard Lines, Sunken Cheeks provides the appropriate cease-fire in Pantera's aural assault. A slow (for Pantera), grinding intro is followed by a fast tempo and Anselmo quickly spewing forth on his decadent life. The chorus periodically slows things down and returns to the grind that served as the intro. A very melodic solo is a note-worthy highlight of this track as well. Slaughtered's machine gun riffs follow with somewhat forgettable lyrics and vocals but a tremendous groove throughout.

25 Years continues to provide some insight into Phil Anselmo's past by revealing his feelings towards a certain paternal figure in a very graphic way. The song itself is hardly worth including as an album track though. Overly simplistic and reminiscent of Good Friends and A Bottle of Booze, it feels like a badly written diatribe with a theme far too common to be of any interest if Anselmo weren't such an enigmatic figure. As it is the aforementioned is the only reason why this track is even slightly note-worthy.

Shedding Skin follows 25 Years in seemingly giving a glimpse into Anselmo's relationships. This time the lyrics apparently deal with friendships or romantic relationships and trust therein. A fantastic chorus is one of the highlights and the groove, slow and steady, eventually builds into a solo that gives way to pounding finale.

Use My Third Arm and Throes of Rejection close the album's original content with disappointing lyrics but powerful, if somewhat forgettable, melodies. The former touches on the anarchist mindset while the latter deals with the insecurities of dating. Both topics get a far too familiar and simplistic treatment with the lyrics sometimes bordering on throwaway lines. Musically the highlight of the two is Throes of Rejection, which sets off with pounding drums and menacing riffs, as if announcing an incoming showdown. Sadly what is delivered thereafter remains very catchy musically but poorly conceived lyrically.

The closer on the album is a cover of Black Sabbath's Planet Caravan. As far as covers go it is a very faithfully adaptation of the original, perhaps a little too faithful for its own good. To their credit Pantera more than do justice to this classic but the song simply does not fit in with the rest of the mood the album has been building up to this point.

Far Beyond Driven shows its true colors from the very beginning by setting off on an aggressive binge that seldom lets up. At times Pantera seems to be trying far too hard to enhance the unfiltered rage that was captured in Vulgar Display of Power and this leads to some disappointing tracks. Nonetheless, amongst the failed attempts, lay some true gems from Pantera's catalogue that successfully manage to one-up vulgar Display of Power in its venomous bite.

This new version of the Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack coincides with the movie's 30th anniversary (which is also celebrated by a special edition DVD). The CD is notable for several instrumental tracks by John Williams, as well as for "Any Day Now," a previously unreleased song performed by Perchik/Paul Michael Glaser (better known for his starring role in TV's Starsky and Hutch). The soundtrack is often compared unfavorably with the original 1964 cast album, in which Zero Mostel played the part of Tevye (here performed by Topol, who had been in the 1967 London production). But this CD has a lot going for it, including glossy remastering and, of course, Isaac Stern as the fiddler. In the end, whatever version you decide to pick up, Fiddler remains one of the most enduring musicals of all time. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

At first, I thought this musical was weird but then I grew to like it. It has a sad ending but the thems in the movie are really interesting. Life really is like being a fiddler on the roof. In a musical coming up at my school, I am playign the part of Grandmother Tzeitel in Tevye's dream. I am excited to play the part and I think our musical will go very well!

The music from Fiddler on the Roof is exciting, fun, interesting and funny! This CD is mixed with humor, music from different cultures and a wide mix of different songs. Each song is so different that I can listen to it for hours. I was surprised how enjoyable and pleasent it really is. Although...it is easy to get this music stuck in your head!

It's tempting to follow the post-Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young career of Neil Young and underestimate this early band as a lighter, commercial diversion. Great, but time for an update!.......2007-04-03

This was a great album when it was released in 1974. However, this CD is simply a song-for-song reissue of the vinyl album. There is plenty of room on this CD for additional songs. It is time to either update this release with bonus tracks, or come out with an all new CSNY greatest hits release (similar to what they did for CSN).

An overview of their 2 most popular albums plus 2 singles.......2007-03-14

Considering that the bulk of this collection comes mainly from Crosby Stills and Nash's debut and the CSN&Young album Deja Vu, this is a good overview of their 2 most popular albums. Though all the songs are great, I don't consider it all you need to hear from CSNY. After all, they'd have other projects like solo albums from all four, side projects (Mannassas and Crosby&Nash) and other albums and hits beyond this. But if you've never heard their music, this collection should be enough to get you interested in CSNY (besides, this was originally released in 1974 and deals exclusively with their 1969-71 era). The cover features some pretty artwork by Joni Mitchell, who was a friend to the band. From their debut, you get Crosby's placid "Guinevere," one of the most creative story-songs "Wooden Ships" co-written and sung by Crosby and Stills (Paul Kantner also helped to write it, although he didn't get credit until years later), Stills' winsome "Helplessly Hoping" and the quintessential epic "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," which was written for Judy Collins, whom Stills dated. Inclusion of Nash's "Marrakesh Express" would've been appropriate, but back when this was released, there may have been the issue of time restraint (most LP records were usually no longer than 40 minutes). From Deja Vu, you get the title track (composed by Crosby) which sounds like a medley in that it starts out bright and slows down, Nash's "Teach Your Children" (a very positive message about parents and children getting along with each other) and "Our House" (which described a house Nash shared in Laurel Canyon with Joni Mitchell), Stills' take on Mitchell's "Woodstock" (it's a shame "Carry On" wasn't included but again, it's probably a question of time restraints) and Young's introspective "Helpless." In addition, you get Young's powerful "Ohio" (written about a protest which took place at Kent State University and ended in tragedy) and Stills' "Find the Cost of Freedom" which features some fine harmony between the four. That's what you get on So Far (which probably means "our greatest hits... so far"). If you like this and want more, check out the box set.

West Coast Dreamin'.......2007-03-08

If ever you want to get away from it all on the school run and imagine you're living high in the LA canyons hanging out with joni and her cool buddies writing their songs just for you; then this is the album to play as you drop your kids off. Great harmonies from the boys and distinctive vocals from Neil Young. Cover art work by Joni Mitchell as a bonus. A classic of its time.

This CSNY album is packed with classics that ring great and true even all these years later.

Wooden Ships shows great musicianship. Perhaps the broader meaning is lost in the 60s, but it is still great to listen to.

Teach Your Children is filled with 60s moralizing - or is it a modern commentatry that No Child Left Behind isn't enough?

Ohio, a song of the Kent State massacre, shares an anti-authority and anti-big government message that has been gaining steam in recent years.

Woodstock, about the iconic festival they attended (and ironically written by Joni Mitchell who didn't attend) could also be seen as surviving in modern times. At least as long as the reunion shows keep going every five years there.

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, one of their most famous anthems, also survives the test of time.

What a great album - enjoy!

So Far-- so GOOD.......2007-02-21

CSNY's SO FAR is a "Best Of" collection in the truest sense-- every track here is a highlight of the album it was originally on (there were 3 in total). From the mystical "Deja Vu" to the Top 40 hit "Our House" to their magnus opus "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and everything in between, SO FAR is simply SO GOOD! With no filler or throwaways to be found on it, this one is all you'll ever really need from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Essential to all 1970-era rock and pop collections. Highest recommendation.

With a distinctive voice and controversial statements, Sinead O'Connor was briefly in the limelight and quickly in the doghouse. But even her opinionated politics can't take away from the beautiful work she's contributed to the post-punk canon. O'Connor's poignant delivery of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," is still heart-wrenchingly painful. "Troy" is equally evocative. So Far... The Best of Sinead O'Connor provides a thorough sampling of O'Connor's early years. Emotionally charged rockers like "Emperor's New Clothes" and "Mandinka" are essential inclusions, as are her rhythmic explorations with Bomb The Bass, "Empire," and the early "I Want Your (Hands On Me)." Sadly, her Cole Porter contribution to Red, Hot, And Blue was omitted. But O'Connor proves she rightfully deserves diva status with her rendition of "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina." Conservative selection.......2006-10-02

This useful round-up of the most commercially successful period in the career of Sinéad O'Connor of course kicks off with the memorably wonderful Nothing Compares 2 U and concentrates mainly on the hit singles, but in their album versions. Owners of the albums that these selections come from will find little that they don't already have, the only exceptions being a shorter Thank You For Hearing Me (at 4.34 presumably a vinyl single edit) and Empire, a Bomb The Bass track on which she guests with Benjamin Zephaniah.
Key album tracks such as the vengeful Last Day Of Our Acquaintance, I Am Stretched On Your Grave and Fire On Babylon are also included, though had the collection been a little more adventurous it would have been nice to see some of the hard to find experimental early singles such as I Want Your (Hands On Me) with MC Lyte, or the notorious Jump In The River duet with Karen Finley. As it is, this collection mostly serves the more casual listener who does not expect to soon buy any of her albums.

Without doubt one of the most talented singers to have emerged in the last 20 years and her albums huge successes, so a best-of seemed like a good idea. So Far...The Best Of does provide the casual listener with some of O'Connor's biggest hits such as the huge "Nothing Compares 2 U", "Mandinka", "Fire on Babylon" and so on, but as a real O'Connor I must say that it omits way too many of her greatest songs. Sure, "best-of" collections are for people who wants the best and biggest only, but unfortunately this compilation doesn't even manage to give that; for instance, why include "Empire" and not "Three Babies"? And why "Heroine" and not "You Do Something to Me" or "This Is a Rebel Song? As I've said, most people wouldn't even know the difference, but as a fan I feel like the casual listener is missing out on some of her greatest moments. I'm glad that they included "You Made Me the Thief of Your Heart" that at least, redeems it from total failure. If you want the "best-of" Sinead O'Connor don't buy this one; save your money and wait for a real sampling or just buy "The Lion and the Cobra" and "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" as these were her best.

Almost Great.......2005-09-28

I love Sinead O'Connor. I love that she doesn't care what people think of her. Or, even better, she does care, but she does what she needs to do anyway. I think that's the sign of a great artist. Heck, I even like her bald head.

Oh, and then there's the music. Don't let it be overshadowed by her public persona, because the music is what it's about. If I don't give 5 stars to this CD, it's because some of the choices are odd. "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina"? How about "Rebel Song" or "Three Babies"? Still, I did hear some of my favorites here: "Mandinka," "The Emporer's New Clothes,""I Am Stretched On Your Grave," etc. etc. And for those of you who came to Sinead because of the Prince cover- well, that's in here too.

Have to buy this one, because it contains "You Made Me The Thief Of Your Heart," O'Connor's most powerful and most exact expression of familial devastation. The song anchored Jim Sheridan's film "In The Name Of The Father," here it expiates surrounding detritus.

Solid Collection.......2005-01-15

Given the fact that Sinead hasn't had a radio hit since 1990 (I believe), this "greatest hits" collection is amazing. I haven't really followed Sinead religiously, except for a couple of albums. This CD has it all. The songs showcase Sinead's unique vocals as well as her writing talents. It's a shame she faded from the public. Whether it's from the media or through her own fault, her low key presence has caused many to miss out on some great music.
