4 out of 5 stars Very interesting..........2005-06-09

I usually despise tribute albums, I think they are jus an easy way for evrybody involved to ge some bucks, mainly when the tribute is made about a band whom is still active.

Anyway, being a huge old AC-DC fan (the AC/DC pre-Ballbreaker), I could not resist to buy this one. Compared with other tribute albuns, in this one the guest musicians really managed to record something unique, creating their own twists to the songs. Very good. My particular favorite was the majestic "Ride On".

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......1999-12-16

This is how tribute albums should be done. Put all hard rock/heavy metal performers on it so it's a hard solid performance all the way through. And what a tribute it is. Every song rocks. One of the biggest surprises on here is Joe Lynn Turner(former Rainbow vocalist), doing Back In Black with Black with Phil Collen on guitar. Man, how come he doesn't shred with Def Leppard. Another equally great one is Sin City with Jack Russell and Mark Kendall of Great White. But my two favorites on this one are the SLAMMIN' version of Little Lover and T'N'T, both sung by Bon-soundalike Sebastian Bach. The first with Ratt's DeMartini on guitat and the second with Kim Deal on guitar, who does an excellent job. Bach sounds so good on Little Lover it's incredible. Great job to all performers and any fan of AC/DC will want this.

5 out of 5 stars unleashes AC/DC's ripping, go to hell attitude.......1999-09-17

This album is one of the truest tributes I've heard. Featuring a variety of musicians, this CD tears through AC/DC classics--both Bon Scott and Brian Johnson eras. The artists open fire with their own versions to such AC-DAC hits as TNT, Ride On, Whole Lot of Rosie, etc. Listen to Bob Kulick and John Corabi rip into Shake a Leg with venomous zeal. As an extra incentive, Motorhead blasts through It's a Long Way to the Top with Lemmy's straining vocals. A must for the AC/DC fan.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best tribute CDs........1998-10-18

I grew up listening to 80' heavy metal bands, and having them do some songs of my favorite band is great. All the songs are worth listening, with the highlights being Quiet Riot doing "Highway to Hell," Great White doing "Sin City," Twisted Sister doing "Walk All Over You," and Ugly Kid Joe doing "Live Wire." If you are an AC/DC fan, you will enjoy this album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent music from guitar wiz Alvin Lee!.......2002-01-15

After listening to this cd by Ex-Ten Years After Guitarist/vocalist Alvin Lee I was truly impressed. The man is better than ever and hasn't lost any of his guitar licks since his popularity in the 70's. His speed and accuracy are to be admired. His vocals are top notch as well. From the first track "Keep On Rockin'" which sounds alot like Ten Years After's "Choo Choo Mama" you know this cd is gonna cook. You've got the hilarious song "Long Legs" which could have been sung by ZZ Top (Its that kind of song), "Boogie All Day" which is very swing oriented, and you even have Alvin doing some cover versions. One being the Dave Edmunds hit "I Hear You Knockin'" which is as good if not better than the original. And Alvin even does a superb job of covering The Beatles tune "I Want You (She's so Heavy)". All in all if you enjoy great rock n' roll provided by one of the fastest guitarists ever than pick this cd up before it's deleted. Also check out Alvin's "LIve In Vienna" Cd in which he includes tracks from this cd as well as old time classics like "I'm Going Home"! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Alvin Lee only gets better with age.......1999-11-20

While most gutiarists of his generation are either no longer with us, or a mere shadow of their former selves, Alvin Lee's gutiar playing is better than ever. From the opening licks of "Keep On Rockin" through a a great cover of the Beatles "I Want You(she's so Heavy)" This is the work of a true master in top form. "The Bluest Blues" features George Harrison on slide as well as one of the greatest gutiar solos of Alvin's career. Anyone who enjoys great gutiar playing (there seems to be very little of that these days) will love this album. Rock On Alvin!

      Album Description

2007 four CD set on the Proper label from the Blues legend. Lightnin' Hopkins was one of the Blues' greatest talents, whose spare, expressive guitar playing, taciturn vocals and crisp versification all place him firmly in the tradition of Texas blues. Hopkins recorded every kind of Texas blues there was, documenting the various traditions that Blind Lemon Jefferson had first indicated and establishing a personal and often autobiographical genre of his own. His style was born from spending many hours playing informally without a backing band. His distinctive style often included playing, in effect, bass, rhythm, lead, percussion, and vocals, all at the same time. His musical phrasing would often include a long low note at the beginning, the rhythm played in the middle range, then the lead in the high range. Proper.

      5 out of 5 stars True sound.......2002-06-03

I was looking for an album that contained Harlen Nocturne. If you ever hear the melody/song Harlem Nocturne you would know that this recording captures that haunting sound. Plus it has some great clasic tunes.

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2000-07-11

I purchased this CD sight unseen/sound unheard. I previously purchased "winter blues" without having seen or heard it and found it to be very good. I thought "Harlem Nocturne" was another new CD by Edgar. It isn't. It is a collection of material recorded in the early 1960s while apparently performing in clubs. The sound quality is fine, both instrumentals and voice, what disappoints me is the songs. I own at least 7 of Edgar's releases (at least 6 CDs and 1 album) and none of the songs on this collection sounds like an Edgar Winter song to me. The only value I find in this release is as a historical document.

4 out of 5 stars My Lord! What a voice!.......2007-05-14

It was while searching for classic Gospel clips and listening to the Davis Sisters sing "YOU'RE GONNA NEED HIM" on YouTube that I first heard this INCREDIBLE voice. Spanning a career in the 1940's-60's, Brother Joe May was basically a "Sanctified Blues Shouter", singing in the same Chicago church milieu that produced Aretha Franklin. In his prime his style and phrasing was compared to Mahalia Jackson but unlike her, he did not play the secular circuit (and thus never acheived her level of fame). As the Album title indicates, he was called the "Thunderbolt of the Midwest" but with a full-throated range extending past C4 I like to think of him as the "Gospel Caruso" !

Highlights of this collection include a bluesy 6/8 rendition of OUR FATHER (not the usual tune for the Lord's Prayer). I don't have the album (yet!) but I downloaded this cut from Wynona Carr's DRAGNET FOR JESUS on iTunes. There's another collection, WHEN GOSPEL WAS GOSPEL, that features selections from lots of the old Gospel Greats like Mahalia, Rosetta Tharpe, the Davis Sisters, Marion Williams and others...

5 out of 5 stars The Thunderbolt of the Middle West .......2007-04-13

The first time I heard this Brother Joe May Specialty album, (reviewed in Jazz & Blues Report in the November 1993 issue) I was overwhelmed. Here was as powerful a singer as I had heard and if not religious, I could not help but be impressed by the fervor as well as his power in the performances. Concord has acquired Fantasy (and Specialty) and this CD is still in print and this should be readily available.

Fantasy Records not only has a fine series of reissues from the Specialty rhythm and blues catalog, but also the equally invaluable Legends of Specialty Gospel series. Space limitations prevents as extensive coverage of all these releases that they deserve. One recent release in particular stands out with one of the most remarkable singers of any genre that America has ever heard. Thunderbolt of the Middle West spotlights Brother Joe May, with guest appearances by Sister Wyonna Carr, the Pilgrim Travelers, and, on the live recording of Old Ship of Zion that opens this collection, Charles Brown on organ and the Sallie Martin Singers. It isn't simply his range, it is, as the annotators state, his uncanny sense of dynamics and vocal projection that leave their mark on the listener. His vocals go from a gentle recitation to a soaring affirmation of his beliefs that make his renditions of Thomas Dorsey's "How Much More of Life's Burden Can We Bear" or "I'm Gonna Live the Life I Sing About in My Song", so compelling. In addition to his powerful singing, there are also a dozen or so songs from the late gospel composer. Brother Joe May was firmly committed to gospel music, and resisted efforts to have him make secular recordings. If he had crossed over, he would have been one of the rhythm'n'blues artists recently honored with a stamp by the postal service. (I originally wrote this review when the Postal Service issued several stamps of the likes of Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson.)

4 out of 5 stars Visceral, pounding, involving rock and roll instrumentals.......2006-10-05

This is kinda like the Dictators without Adny Shernoff's lyrics. It's rock and roll, boys and girls, and Ross the Boss slays the wavelengths with pure, thick chords. That said, it's a nice touch when every once in awhile a Rickenbacher sound enters the mix. Even better is the variety of sounds you get here. It all rocks, sure enough, but there's a change of pace thrown in here and there, background vocals exhorting the crew to higher heights and the drumming. Ah yes, the drumming. Never flashy, always perfect, like the minister's daughter. My only complaint is the mastering. Maxed out it is. The music is already max volume. I would prefer to up the volume to get extra thrills myself, thank you. As it is, turning this beauty up leads to beastly ear pain instead of instant analogue aural nirvana. Slight complaint, though. In fact, I think I'll play it again.
