Nice collection........2007-05-21

I'm not into the greatest hits thing but considering we can not find original albuns by the Hues Corporation this is a nice opportunity to have their music. The quality of the recording is good and the songs are nice. In the absence of their albuns it's recommended for lovers of the disco music.

Dissappointing.......2006-09-01

I bought this cd, because there is no other with all their hits. I especially bought for the 12" versions. But to my surprise only "love corporation" is about 10 seconds longer than the original on vinyl. The rest isn't.

Priceless.......2005-12-20

The group that named themselves after a famous billionaire, one Mr. Howard Hughes...and scrambled the name a bit. The nuggets on this album of course are their biggest hits including "Freedom For The Stallion" ( also covered by Three Dog Night) and "Rock the Boat". There are quite a few above average tunes in this collection such as "Love Corporation" and "Rockin' Soul". Worth a listen.

12 inch version does not mean long play.......2004-07-08

As for the fellow who said that he expected more for the so-called 12 inch version, apparently he is not very familiar with the album at all. What this simply means is that that song on this CD was taken from the original 12 inch album which I do have and is the same as this CD compilation

Fond Memories of the Corporation.......2004-05-08

Being a fan of the '70 soul and soft rock music, this is one group that is in the Top Ten, (Top Five in my book)that brings
back fond memories. Rock the Boat and Rockin Soul are popular
songs that everybody enjoys, but Love Corporation and Go to The
Poet, stand out in my book. This group really rocks when I play
their music and think back to my younger days.

Scooter McGavin's review of Costa's style is sad and underappreciative. To state that Cosat's "Lullaby" from the Curios George sound track is "less than impressive" compared to contributions from Jack Johnson and Ben Harper is absurd. "Lullaby" is an wonderful track with beautiful lyrics. Costa's work might be too simple for McGavin, but that is to be expected from a simpleton.

Amazing CD.......2006-05-25

I don't understand how people are comparing Matt Costa's music to Jacks. Both are great in there own right, but I don't see much of a similarity. I think Jack is more bluesy and has his whole on the beach watching the sunset vibe. Whereas Matt comes off as more of a singer/songwriter with more diverse influences. That's just my take on it...

Neway, Songs We Sing combines an array of different sounds such as country, folk and rock. Each song seems to be influenced from a certain band or type of music, which is great to hear. For example, "Oh Dear" could pass for a modern Beatles song. I find Matt to be very likable and his excellent song writing skills and smooth vocals back it up. His lyrics are great too; they explain the obvious hardships of relationships without saying it outright. Instead he uses metaphores and clever stories to relay the message. My favorites include Cold December, Yellow Taxi and Sunshine. Great CD all the way through. Highly reccomended for anyone who enjoys mellow acoustic sounds.

Better Than Jack.......2006-04-13

This cd is AMAZING! I love the simple guitar, the voice and everything about Costa. As we know Matt is part of the "Jack Johnson Crew" where Jack is the star and the others get some recognition but less. For me Costa is better. His songs are diverse and really seem to flow. Not many people know him but he is worth to buy. Jack or Matt That is the question. I choose Matt hands down. His cd's are great and can be listened to over and over.

Unpleasantly surprised.......2006-04-09

I, like so many who have reviewed this cd here, bought Matt Costa's "Songs We Song" because of his contribution to Jack Johnson's cd. His simple, unaffected style of singing was the appeal for me. However, after listening through half of songs Matt sings, I had to turn it off, for two reasons. His songs are derivative, musically speaking, and his singing style bothered me. I guess what I want to say here is that his beautiful vocal delivery on "Lullaby" on the Curious George soundtrack is not representative of anything (at least on the first half) of "Songs We Sing". I was really disappointed.

These Are the Melodies with Simple Harmonies We Sing.......2006-04-04

Many were first introduced to Matt Costa when he popped up on Jack Johnson led Curious George Soundtrack. His inclusion, Lullaby was less than impressive and definitely couldn't hold up against the likes of Jack Johnson and Ben Harper. Now Costa is trying to strike out on his own with his first full length album, the appropriately titled Songs We Sing.

Cost does have a good pedigree being a skateboarder turned singer-songwriter discovered by the surfer turned Johnson. Costa's sound doesn't deviate too much from his mentor, but Costa does seem to have a wider variety of influences that includes some bluegrass (Ballad of Miss Kate), country (Sweet Rose), and even some songs with a distinct sixties British Invasion vibe (Songs We Sing) to go along with the traditional folk that Johnson usually utilizes. There's even a spacey song that reminds me of Nick Drake (Yellow Taxi).

But even with the eclectic musical genres represented on the album, Costa still lacks something. Whereas Johnson's silky voice sooths the listener taking them to a mellow place, Costa's voice hasn't found that ability in him yet. Even though the album grew on me each listening, it's not something that could replace any of Johnson's disks out of heavy rotation in my CD player.

One of the best volumes in the series, this one is loaded with familiar tracks. My only real complaint is the 3 minute version of Rock the Boat, a song available in this length on numerous compilations. It seems out of place on a collection of 12" singles. Other volumes are called "Groovin You" and "more more more." Track times are:

I have two Walter Norris trio cds on Concord...They are great to listen to..but for me,this piano-bass duo just falls flat..There is something missing from the mix,even if,as is the case here,both players are themselves expert...The solos are strained,and together the whole has a sort of muted quality,as if fuzzy or recorded at a distance...Now maybe this album is an aquired taste,I don't know...What I do know is that I really didn't like this album much...

Buried Treasure.......2001-12-17

There is, indeed, buried treasure in the vaults of Concord Jazz. George Mraz has been around for a long time with his marvelous bass playing--as a sideman and even fronting groups. So his presence and playing came as no surprise to me.

But...Walter Norris. This guy is a gift. Pensive, witty, gentle, bluesy--Norris is all that on this recording of piano and bass. This is another of Concord's Duo series, and Norris and Mraz are amazingly sympatico, backing each other up, but, most often, complimenting each other's musings. The Evans' groups, of course, had that feeling of musicians who knew each others' next move before it was made. Mraz and Norris approach that intimacy here.

Listen to "Have You Met Miss Jones" or Norris' own delicately meandering "Hues of Blue" and you'll see what I mean. These guys feed off each other, nourish each other, clearly understand the sensibilities of each other. Neither seems to be following the other's lead--instead, each seems to be on the same path of discovery--unearthing surprising new ideas in this menu of mostly
standards. And then, at the end of this cd, just give yourself over to Norris' "Afterthoughts." As elegant as music can be.

Concord often cleans out its vaults, eliminating old cd's from its catalogue. This cd seems to be expereiencing that fate right now. Act quickly; this is jazz at its finest. A true meeting of the minds, and of the hearts.
