For sheer entertainment value, it's hard to find a classical CD that will beat this one. Gloria Cheng has chosen an astonishing variety of 20th-century piano music with nothing in common except brevity and dance origins. The disc is full of familiar pieces (Debussy, Scriabin, Ravel, Prokofiev) and entertaining novelties (Albright, Martinu, Poulenc, Ginastera). Donald R. Davis's exercise in creative plagiarism, "Illicit Felicity," rates a special mention for its ingenuity. But really, unless you're allergic to Philip Glass, there isn't a loser on the entire program. Cheng plays brilliantly, with appropriate special emphasis on the dance rhythms of the music, and Telarc's sound engineering is typically realistic. It ain't profound, but this is still a marvelous program. --Leslie GerberCustomer Reviews:
Fun to listen to!.......2000-09-18
Ms. Cheng's playing is phenomenal, and I also enjoy her earlier CD of works by John Adams and Terry Riley. Both CD's show off her rich tone and appealing style, but the dance collection is the most entertaining. If you buy this CD, you'll probably find yourself listening to it frequently.
An interesting concept not quite realized.......2000-07-25
A very definite positive about this program is that almost every selection was new to me. After all, how many of us are familiar with works like Miguel del Aguila's "Conga," Philip Glass's "Modern Love Reel," or Paul Hindemith's "Shimmy"? I mean, really! So there is much Joy of Discovery afforded by this CD; but with all but one piece running under 5 minutes (and that one at 9:26), a certain cloying factor creeps in after a while, and perhaps I should recommend this be played in small sections.
But all in all, what a treasure-trove of little-known pieces.

Let's Clarify.......2005-12-03
I quote:
"'Scottish Reflections' the music included consists of early Scotch, English, and Irish folk tunes."
Scotch is what you drink
A Scot, or Scottish, is what you are.
The only exception is the 'Scotch-Irish' in the U.S., this is the Traditional name for the Scots who moved to Ireland, then moved to the southern U.S. states.
Okay, I'm done ranting.
This CD is extremely good, The bonnie wee lassie, Bonnie Ridout can play a fiddle like nae other. She does our Celtic tunes proud!
Sad tunes...........2002-12-07
Many of the pieces are viscerally connected to the early 19th Century when the British were battling Napoleon. Pieces such as `The Source of Spey' and `Periwig were dance tunes published in the Captain Simon Fraser Collection of 1815. `Lamentation for the Fallen Heroes at Waterloo' provides a haunting retrospective of the definitive battle. It takes little imagination to visualize sailors dancing to fiddle tunes such as `Itchy Fingers' or `Highland Laddie' (accompanied by a penny whistle), or soldiers sitting around camp fires at night contemplating home life and the chances of death while listening to `Lament for Limerick' (Ireland) or `Lochaber No More' (Scotland). Even the waltzes such as `Irish Lamentation' (England) are retrospective and `Gloomy Winter' says it all. A more recent piece, `Dunblane', by Charlie Glendinning commemorates the deaths of 16 school children and their teacher in 1996.
Using varied bowing techniques, Bonnie Rideout has created a set of poignant renditions of old and new tunes. National Sottish Harp Champion Sue Richards joins Rideout for several of these pieces, including `Unst Bridal March', `Cro Kintale' and the various lamentations. Perfect music for contemplation on a snowy winter's eve.
a must to add to any scottish music collection.......2002-08-30

Growing up in Britain, Whelan won seven button-accordion championships in Ireland and moved to the U.S. in 1980 at age 20. He's not only a quick-fingered player but quite a melodic composer as well, and he wrote a dozen of the 14 tracks on Celtic Reflections. The most successful numbers are the most traditional, for on those Whelan and such old pals as Patrick Kilbride, Seamus Egan, and Jerry O'Sullivan put the bright themes through one bouncy variation after another. Less successful are the synth-soaked mood pieces. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:
Whelan does it again.......2001-08-16
Before my love of Celtic music started, I could never imagine ever liking an instrument like the accordion. I had no idea that an instrument that I had always heard in music like the polka could actually sound so haunting and pleasurable. Whelan is a master, though, bringing out every nuance of mood imaginable.
This was the first Whelan CD I ever picked up (I tried it on a whim without even hearing it), and I am so glad I did.

Musical curios but much more.......2004-03-21
Piers Lane performs all of this frequently finger-breaking music with digital dexterity and loving care, though some of the more demanding passages come off as cautious rather than coruscating. There can be no doubt about the quality of the recorded sound, however, or the beautiful sounds of the Fazioli piano he uses. All in all, this particular out-of-the way corner of the repertory has been given the deluxe treatment on this CD.
