This is the finest collection of Maze featuring Frankie Beverly that I have ever heard!!! It is the best selection of hits especially if you are a true fan or even if you are not. Any and everyone would love it. I am definitely enjoying it. I am from the south so of course "Southern Girl" is my favorite song.

Seriously, we get some smokin' slow jams and other hard funk numbers. My favorite has got to be Joy and Pain with Kurtis Blowe...I'm not a big rap fan but still love Kurtis' rap in the middle. I also love While I'm Alone, Golden Time of Day and Before I Let Go with Woody Wood. Every song on the album is great, and it's perfect to listen to late at night, when the lights are low and you're working on your computer. It really helps get the mood going.

Can't get enough of Frankie Beverly and Maze!.......2005-05-15

I am definitely old school when it comes to my music and would recommend this CD. I saw Frankie Beverly and Maze in Indiana when Happy Feelins' came out (late '70's?), in Sacramento in 2002 and in New Orleans at the Essence Festival in 2004. They still sound just as great as the first time I heard them and I never tire of listening to this group. I also have their Back to Basics CD and Live in New Orleans DVD. They are always the last act at the Essence Festival each year and the audience gives mad props to them, which is much deserved.

Maze is a really good, really long-winded R&B band for the uninitiated. Trust me, this is some pretty funky stuff. You'll especially appreciate it if you listen to it with Parliament and/or Earth Wind and Fire. The best three songs are:
1. While I'm Alone
2. Joy and Pain (with Kurtis Blowe)
3. Before I Let Go (with Woody Wood)

Although just about every other song on this album is good. By the way, I'd recommend you buy this with "Millenium Collection Parliament" and "The Best of Earth Wind and Fire, Volume 1".

I was raised on Frankie Beverly and Maze and there is nothing like their music! My boyfriend and I have gone to see them live and their show is always jammin! This CD is one that stays in my cd player for days. Some of my faves are Golden Time of Day, While I'm Alone, Happy Feelins', etc. You gotta buy this CD! I have TWO..one for the care and one for the house! ahahaa =OD

If you are a serious "Frankie" fan, and even if you are not, this CD is a must for your collection. Most if not all of his most recognizable ballads are included, and it makes you think about your wonderful concert memories every time that you hear it. Maze is one of those groups that doesn't need to put out any new music because they have such a prolific catalog of classic party jams and "blue lights" ballads, but, if you had to have one CD that embodies the best of his ballad collection,...this is IT!! Anyone who has (repeatedly) seen Frankie and Maze perform live knows the quality and timelessness of these songs......don't even think about it,....BUY THIS ONE TODAY!

I think this collection is very good.Franky Beverly's voice is amazing.I love the arrangements of all the songs.Its something about Franky's voice that's just magical.My favorite songs on the cd are "Happy Feelings","We Are One","I Love You Much To Much",and "When You Love Someone".I'm telling you,this cd is the real deal.I totally recommend this cd to anybody.It is excellent.

How can you have a true Maze Slow Jam compilation without "Lady of Magic!" Not only that but where is "Golden Time of Day" and "While I'm Alone?" Those are classic, classic cuts and should be automatically included in any collection! Since some really great songs are missing from this CD, it is really closer to 3.5 stars than 4, but I couldn't bring myself to rate such a beautiful voice and hardworking group any less.

I've always been a Huge Frankie Beverly&maze fan. this smooth collection is a Highlight&tribute to there Impact on R&B Music. they are Black Folks's Grateful Dead. ain't no other Act in R&B quite like Frankie beverly&Maze because they ain't even put out a Record in 15 years&Yet if they ever come to a Chocolate city that place will be Packed. these songs are all my jams&I enjoyed the arrangement they got here. this is a Very strong collection with smooth sounds.

Still sounds great after all these years........2007-03-12

At a time when REAL Soul Music appeared to be going into decline, Frankie Beverly and Maze released this wonderful CD which was very well received. By itself, the gorgeous "Can't Get Over You" justifies buying the CD but there are other great songs here as well. Frankie Beverly is most certainly one of the greatest Soul singers of our time--but he is also criminally underrated. A classic CD to enjoy time and again (nearly 20 years after its original release it still sounds great!).

Maze featuring Frankie Beverly is unique soulful jazzy music that is not going to win over many Brittany Spears fans but should please anyone who likes well arranged funky 80's soul.Their somewhat Miles Davis like horn player really sounds superb on this release.The song "Mandela" is my favourite track being a harmonious call to release the then imprisoned South African leader with Beverlys' voice sounding passionate and emotive next to a beautiful chorus of backup singers.Joy and Pain is for me their finest hour, however this C.D.contains some fine moments also in spite of other reviews disparaging their mid 80's output.

I first heard this album in the fall of 1977. I immediately fell in love with it. While I still own it on vinyl, I have searched years to find this in a CD format. The entire album comes highly recommended for some good soulful, listening. Here are my favorite picks and why I have selected them. The very sensual "Lady of Magic" and "While I'm Alone" are to be unmatched. The wanting and longing that Frankie Beverly so evidently expresses on these two powerhouses can bring you to your knees. I am especially taken by the uptempo groove "YOU" because once again this man is speaking directly to the love of his life, which seems to be his only desire and focus in life. "Happy Feelings" is just that. In the air and everywhere, the feel good feeling is infectious! "Look At California"...Aahh now there's a song which implies California dreamin and Frankie's description of the breathtaking beauty of the mountains and sunshine in picture frame fashion, makes me wish I was there to experience it all with him. Absolutely, positively no artist can put it down like Frankie Beverly & Maze.

When I listen to Maze I literally go to another place. This music is so emotionally uplifting its like healing to the ears, and these brothers can play with the best of them. Where Ron Isley voice soars Frankie Beverly's sooths - and I love the fact that he writes all these great songs and plays rhythm guitar with such elegance. Bands like Maze will never be forgotten as long as I'm living. This is what real music is all about becauses there are so many different elements of music on this masterpiece and they excel on all of them. With each song flowing into the next it's d*mn near impossible to skip a track. My favorites - all of them - but really four song on this album should have been mega-hits "Happy Feelin's","Lady Of Magic You", and "Look At California" for an example. This is why they have such a solid fan base (which is mostly african-americans for some reason) but anyway this is a must have. I've got to go because I'm feeling the urge to give this masterpiece another listen.

While funkified R&B orchestras of the late '70s and early '80s such as Earth, Wind & Fire and the Commodores made frequent appearances on the mainstream charts, Maze hold a special place in the hearts of nostalgic R&B fans because the San Francisco-based seven-piece (later eight-piece) band always stayed exclusive to its loyal core audience--the many thousands of mostly adult, mostly black, mostly working-class fans who made each of Maze's 10 albums gold without the help of a huge pop hit. and Maze are his offspring. All jokes aside, if you've ever been to a FB & Maze concert, you know what I'm talking about. This group has not made a studio album in more than a decade, yet continue to draw sold out crowds of dedicated followers wherever they play. If any argument for truly timeless music is to be made, let Maze be exhibit A. This double disc collection is well put together, featuring some of the most loved and well-known songs from the band. "While I'm Alone", "Southern Girl", "Joy And Pain" and "Back In Stride" are all featured alongside some of Frankies' more unsung gems like "Lovely Inspiration" and "Lady Of Magic". Tight does not begin to describe the ability of Frankie and the band's ability to bring the funk and soul full-tilt. Closing your eyes, you can almost imagine being there front row at a Maze concert where you are guaranteed to enjoy yourself. An ultimate showman, Frankie is every bit as good live as he is on record. One of my favorite songs "Golden Time Of Day" is a staple at one of his shows and the quintessential summertime songs. I can't tout this collection or FB & Maze enough. If you're hesitating, dont. Get this cd for your collection. You will not be sorry.

Whenever you are fortunate to listen to the "Anthology" by Maze/featuring Frankie Beverly, you will understand about the goings on of life. The "Joy & Pain", the "reasons" you try to love one more time. You will grow to understand the emotions of ones being and the purpose of expressing your feelings to that special someone. One of the greatest live performer in the history of music. When you leave after attending a Maze concert, you will find yourself driving yourself home without turning on the radio..... The songs will stay in your mind as well as in your heart. This is one group that I truly respect and love. All the songs on this anthology are well worth the time to listen to. Yep, a wonderbread white chick from south GA, I get goosebumps every single time I hear Frankie Beverly's voice...he gets right under my skin and into my SOUL...!! I am living in the high desert and no one here knows what funk/soul/r&b is all about. I miss it, I crave it, I've about worn out all my tapes and cd's just to get my soul rush. Maze is one of the most NONtalked about groups, yet their music is absolutely top notch and I'm sorry I missed them in Las Vegas.. you just cannot go wrong with this group!!

Where is "Look at California?".......2007-05-20

I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but if someone can help me out with this, I would be grateful. If the concert is in LA, and FB&M are FROM LA, wouldn't it make sense to have the song "Look at California" on this DVD? Or am I missing something? Even though I'm opposite the "left coast," these brothas and sistas should at least get their props. Otherwise I'm sure its all good. I will have to pray over the purchase of this DVD.

On the album, Frankie did a short rap to the chorus of "Before I let go." Why doesn't the CD have the same thing? My entire Maze album collection was destroyed and I am trying to replace it with CDs. But the one song I really wanted to be like it was on the album is not on the CD. Can anyone help me?

A Gem Of Modern Soul Music!.......2002-04-11

Guitarist Ron Smith starts things off nicely with his fluid, ringing intro to "Nobody Knows What You Feel Inside" and the effortless, jazzy flow of this opening song is just one of the many pleasures afforded listeners on this, Maze's last (as of this writing) studio LP. For years these gentlemen have held the banner high for the preservation of 'real music' and true talent and they have an avid supporter in me. I've had the pleasure of seeing Maze live in concert 4 times over the past decade and I've never been dissapointed! These cats ROCK THE HOUSE! and while "Back To Basics" emphasizes their softer, more reflective style, it's still an amazing record. No one sings a ballad with more soul, conviction and ease than the amazing Frankie Beverly and "....Basics" is full of such lovely numbers, in fact two of his best love songs follow one another on this LP, the bass heavy groove "Love Is"(featuring a nice solo by keyboardist Philip Woo) and the progressive jazz/soul of "The Morning After" anwell deserved R&B hit. "Laid Back" is an exemplary funk workout in the best Maze tradition and ends side one on a high note. The jittery, uptempo "What Goes Up" is another winner, but the true centerpiece of this collection is the languid, gorgeous "In Time" which manages to sound both socially relevant and romantic at the same time, it's a beautiful, heartfelt performance. "....Basics" was the last LP of all new material issued by this band is a welcome addition to any music library, regardless of genre. There is truly something here for everybody especailly those who enjoy authentic soul music. This is a modern classic by a criminally underappreciated band.

Frankie Beverly has proven to be one of the world's great soul musicians as Maze has always been the masters of soul music. The Song "In Time", I think is one of the best peace song in the world today. If all politicians of this world were to listen to this song, the world would be a better place today. Yes, In Time, we can make this planet a parade.

Maze Mean It With The Title!.......2007-03-22

Without any irony 'Inspiration' more then lives up to it's title because in a very highly produced and technical era of R&B and soul Maze manage to keep true to themselves by and providing listeners with their pleasing sense of rhythm and song craft,just as they do today.'Inspiration' offers a variety of tempos and styles from uptempo soul such as "Feel That You're Feelin'", and "Timin'" heavy funk with "Welcome Home" complete with JB like screams and accents and...well just that transcendant,otherworldly type of lush midtempo R&B Maze seem to always be able to get a grasp on in the beautiful two part title song,the deep "Ain't It Strange" and the mind bending "Woman Is A Wonder";wisely on every one of these songs they've kept Frankie Beverly's fine rhythm guitar and the organ interplay up fron and center.Unlike a lot of soul music desperately trying to "keep it real" against disco in the late 70s 'Inspiration' just allows Maze to be themselves and take their music to whatever heights it leads them on.

ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVE FOR MAZE FANS!!.......2006-01-15

If you're a true Maze fan you already know about this CD, but strangely, many of these tracks somehow never made it to any of the various Greatest Hits compiliations floating. "Love Is Strange", Woman Is A Wonder", and especially "Timin'", are among the best things this awesome band ever did!
