This collection of street recordings from Basel, Switzerland's annual Fasnacht (carnival) marches through the city's streets. Winter & Winter has distinguished itself hugely with its gatefold packaging and astonishing artwork, and this collection seems to outdo the label's other packages. Color images of Fasnacht Cliquen (social clubs whose members play piccolos and drums and march together en masse during carnival) fill the booklet, with their hypnotically hued masks adding mystery to the music's languid, unrelenting waves of power. The music, taped live to two-track, is awesome, with the snare drums cascading as each marching unit nears the microphones and then fading as the drummers pass. So what the listener gets is in fact three layers of percussion, all of it caught in genuinely pristine audio. Ditto for the piccolos, which sound so massive that they seem endless, just one solid block of sound that changes shape periodically. It's rare to find field recordings that catch the aural evidence of a festival, but Rä Dä Bäng does that and much more. It's both electrifying and strangely calming. --Andrew Bartlett
