4 out of 5 stars Lutheran Oratorical Passion with French-Style Recitative.......2005-07-24

Georg Philipp Telemann differed from his friend and colleague Johann Sebastian Bach in that he was even more prolific, producing so much music that it has never been completely catalogued even until today. This enormous mass of music includes a large number of oratorical passions composed during the time that Telemann was music director of the city of Hamburg in North Germany. The 1746 Matthew Passion recorded here is, in some ways, typical of such works written for use in Lutheran Churches at Eastertide: there is an evangelist who declaims verbatim the words of St. Matthew’s Gospel; the words of the other characters are sung by individual singers (Peter, Pilate, Judas Iscariot etc.); the recitative is divided into “secco” and “arioso”; and there are “arias” sung by various members of the cast or, as here in a number of instances, by allegorical figures such as “The Penitent Soul” or “Faith”, always with pious, devotional texts responding to what is happening in the Gospel. There are “turbae” scenes sung by the choir, and, of course, individual verses of hymns well-known to the congregation interspersed in the whole.

Where Telemann’s 1746 St. Matthew Passion differs from many contemporary works is its use of French-style changes of metre within the recitative, enabling Telemann to create a very smooth-flowing narrative and releasing him from the straightjacket of the normal regular declamation expected. The result is a pleasing, fast-flowing Passion that appears to look forward to the music of the next half-century rather than back to the monumental baroque works of Bach or Schütz.

This recording is of a live performance given by the Rheinische Kantorei and Das Kleine Konzert at the cathedral in Knechtsteden on 24th September, 1998. As always with live performances, there are certain disadvantages: you hear the coughing of the audience, occasionally someone accidentally touches a microphone, and once or twice there are inaccuracies in the choir that would have been corrected in a studio recording. On the other hand, the live atmosphere is something that a studio recording cannot achieve, and anyway, one would normally be lucky to hear a performance as good as this anywhere. The part of the evangelist is sung excellently by tenor Wilfried Jochens, and he is joined by Klaus Mertens as a very sovereign Jesus. The other solo parts are taken, it seems, by members of the Rheinische Kantorei, all the male soloists being members of the choir on the evening, while the two female soloists, Veronika Winter, soprano, and Carmen Schüller, alto, did not have the extra burden of singing in the choir.

The result is a fast-moving, enjoyable Passion that, although it does not have the stature of Bach’s ”Matthäuspassion”, is a moving experience both musically and spiritually.

5 out of 5 stars Kein schoener Land.......2000-04-08

This is a classic recording- several years old. But I enjoy listening to it every time- his songs reflect carefully choosen words- mixed with the Austrian dialect- humour and satire. Great.

      4 out of 5 stars Very professional........2003-04-22

This is a very professionally performed HIP matthew passion. Hermann Max conducts and his tempos almost exactly mimic the likes of Herreweghe. He uses woman sopranos and a 50/50 mix for the altos. Forces are rather small; 3-5 to a part. He is dynamic and does not conduct too wooden like. There is the exception of the chorales. They are way too fast. Same fault as Herreweghe. The audience should be meditating on them; instead they are left trying to keep up with the frenetic pace just to comprehend the words.

Soloists range from good to superb, with the woman alto soloist (Lena Susanne Norin) being the superb (as good if not better than Scholl) and the rest being good. Pregardien is excellent as an evangelist; however, his same fault as Bostridge lies in his inability to be believable. Equiluz (Harnoncourt 1972?) and Cuenod (Scherchen 1953) remain the only two I've ever heard which were believable. And even Equiluz not totally so. Very beautiful and dramatic was Pregardien, but you could almost see him staring at the score as you listened. Of course, most singers these days seem to have this "impersonal" problem.

Virtuosity of all singers involved is almost unparalleled. The choir was very precise and had some feeling. Everyone and everything blended very well. Which is why I say this was very professional. I really wonder why not many people seem to know about it. It is a wonderful recording at a lower price. It also fits on 2 cds which makes it easier to listen to. Liner notes are very good (very thick!) and the case comes in a carboard cover to protect it from being scratched. My 4 star rating means that I recommend it as being one of the fifteen best recordings out there at this piece.

        5 out of 5 stars Historical performance!.......2005-12-26

The historical concert of Berlin will persist in our memory for a long time. Recorded just three days after that unforgettable day, November 9, 1989.The emotive burden is present all along this Concert; from the first bars of that excellent performance of The First Piano Concerto Op. 15 to the last bar of the Seventh Symphony. Daniel Barenboim conducted from the Piano in the First Half of the program. The encore was just after the Piano Concerto with the Andante of Mozart ` s Piano Sonata Kn. 333, that pitifully was not added to CD.

The astonished faces, the human warmth and the expressive gestures of a crowd who had never had the possibility to presence a live recording with the main orchestra of his beloved city.

I don' t doubt just a second about its gradual historical importance through the years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Memories from a Historic Moment.......2003-10-03

An exellent CD from a moment in history that never will be forgotten. Daniel Barenboim and the Berlin Filharmonics have not rehersed before the concert - the decision of inviting the guests from DDR was taken on the evening before. You can hear the emotions from the conductor and the conductor. You can feel the presence of the big audience.
Lean back and take it in. Let your thoughts wander, let the memories come.
Then ...... try to find the very hard to find Video.
I found it on Amazon.com .... it is the most valuable video I have.

        5 out of 5 stars Matchless!.......2003-01-03

The emotion of this recording is one of the reasons that make this the best version of both works available today. Recorded live on November 12, 1989 at a special concert given for the visitors from East Germany. Barenboim surpasses himself as both a conductor and soloist. The Largo movement of the Concerto is unsurpassed in its poignancy. One phrase always brings tears to my eyes. Finally, you will never again hear the Symphony No. 7 without remembering the cheers of the audience at the end of the last movement. They are unforgettable and the listener now joins in the cheers.
