1 out of 5 stars A GOOD CD TOO GET HARD TO FIND SONG'S CLEAR ON CD !.......2007-01-25

I LIKE THIS CD HAD A LOT OF GOOD SONGS CLUB PEOPLE LOVE AT ALL AGES SO IF YOU NEED OR WANT THESE SONG'S OR ONE SONG GET IT OR JUST WRIGHT DOWN THE NAMES AND LOOK FOR THEM ON THERE SOLO LP OR CD GOOD HUNTING !

5 out of 5 stars You gotta have it!.......2007-01-04

You just gotta have this item! It's one of the finest compilations of hard to find-disco anthems. The liner notes are oustandning, too.

"A date with rain", "Girls", the fantastic "Peace Pipe" by BT Express...
A true revelation.

Check out vol. 2, too. But I personally dig this one the most.

4 out of 5 stars Not so rare disco.......2006-09-16

The songs were very good. I notice that a lot of 7" singles are on this and its companion "Super Rare Disco Vol 2". This appears to be a very common problem with these disco series. I feel that it's because the labels are trying to cram too many songs onto one disc. This genre is more suited for more discs than for more songs per disc.

5 out of 5 stars Great Disc--Need More.......2003-11-03

Great tracks--many heard for the first time on CD. Here's a list of other "forgotten" gems that need to appear on future editions of this series:
--Extra, Extra (Ralph Carter)
--Quiet Village (Ritchie Family)
--Hold Tight (Vicki Sue Robinson)
--Romeo And Juliet (Alec R Costandinos)
--I'm A Man (Macho)
--I Who Have Nothing (Sylvester)
--Love Magic (John Davis & The Monster Orchestra)
--Undercover Lover (Debbie Jacobs)
--Love Rush (Ann-Margret)
--This Is Hot (Pamala Stanley)

--Giving Up, Giving In (Three Degrees)
--Open Up For Love (Siren)
--Let Me Take You Dancing (Bryan Adams)
--Don't Drop My Love (Anita Ward)
--On Your Knees (Grace Jones)
--Don't Cry For Me Argentina (Festival)
--Action Satisfaction (Melody Stewart)
--We're Gonna Rock (Sabu)
--I'm Ok, You're Ok (American Gypsy)
--Seabiscuit In The Fifth (Belinda West)
--Without Your Love (Cut Glass)
--I Think We're Alone Now Suite (Scott Allen)
--Fly Too High (Janis Ian)
--A Little Bit Of Jazz (Nick Straker Band)
--If You Want Me (Barbara Roy & Ecstasy, Passion and Pain)
--Can You Handle It (Sharon Redd)
--Give Me A Break (Vivien Vee)
--Goosebumps (Debra Dejean)
--Dance (Night Force)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Supplement to the Disco Box.......2003-07-25

For those who have the Disco Box and/or have the Disco Years (vol. 1-7), this album and vol. 2 are both excellent additions. I'm surprised that there are not more than two volumes since there are so many rare tracks that are not even available on CD. My suggestions for other songs that I can't find and I'm sure other people would think of more songs.
Here are the ones I would like to see:
Peanut Vendor - The Rithchie Family
Tiger Baby - Silver Convention
I Love America - Patrick Juvet

Haven't Stopped Dancin' Yet - Gonzalez
Flip - Jesse Green
Think It Over - Cheryl Ladd
Don't Drop My Love - Anita Ward

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2005-01-22

I was looking for DAVID BLAIMERS GROUP (DEEP IS THE MIDNIGHT SEA)and came across this CD, it is soooooooooo great. I just started salsa dancing by myself when I played this song. I listen to the rest of the CD and this relaxed feeling came over me. Thank you for putting Rare Requests Volume 3 together.

4 out of 5 stars Smooth Grooves.......2004-10-21

The David Blamires Group track, "Deep Is The Midnight Sea" is a hit with our listeners in Canada! The phones light up every time I spin it! Warren Hill's "The Passion Theme" is another great one. Good combination of vocals and instrumentals including the now-hard-to-find Blamires song!

4 out of 5 stars "jazzin!!".......2003-04-18

If you love to listen to smooth jazz in the evening you will appreciate this music. My favorite song is "Tell It Like It Is" featuring Bobby Caldwell. The songs are smooth and easy to listen to - try Harlem Nocture by Kofi. The compilation itself is so well put together - and you can listen as many times as you want without waiting to hear it on the radio.

Rare on Air, Volume Four is a collection of live performances selected from the archives of Morning Becomes Eclectic, a daily music show on the Santa Monica, California, radio station KCRW. As on the three previous volumes, this compilation features an impressive array of established recording artists and talented newcomers. Sarah McLachlan and Ani DiFranco contribute impassioned solo offerings, while Joan Osborne performs "St. Theresa" with a full backing band. Evocative ballads by music veterans Randy Newman and Tom Waits are balanced with rousing appearances by Radiohead, Ozomatli, Soul Coughing, and Marcy Playground. The late Jeff Buckley even turns up, contributing the memorable "So Real." --Mitch Myers

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars or mabe 1 star.......2001-11-02

I alternate between thinking this is the best of the series and the worst of the series. There are a few tracks which I have a hard time listening to, and others that I just adore. Highlights for me include Jeff Buckley and Soul Coughing. Ozomatli doesn't do anything for me and the Joan Osborne track is similar to versions I have on other in-studio compilations.

5 out of 5 stars Diamond in the rough.......2000-12-07

Somehow I stumbled upon this record searching around on Amazon, and bought it solely for the live Tom Waits recording (a beautiful, sad, heart-wrenching song).

What I got, is easily one of my very favorite CD's. What an eclectic mix covering the entire spectrum of musical flavors. I have discovered a handful of artists that I had never ever heard before, that are wonderful. Friends come to our house and hear this CD and always want to borrow it. (I had to replace it once already after lending it out).

I am a music addict and own hundreds of CDs, and this has got to be in my top three. I couldn't recommend any more wholeheartedly. You will love this record.

5 out of 5 stars A very lucky find.......2000-06-22

I came across this series of albums by chance, and decided to start with the 4th installation because it included a live Radiohead cut. Overall, this CD is great, not only for the live performances by well-known acts but also for the surprises from groups like Ozomatli and Cafe Tecuba. The assortment of artists makes for wonderful and varied listening. Plus, it also never hurts to have a live cut from Jeff Buckley either. I will definitely check out the previous CDs in this series, and you should too.

5 out of 5 stars An album beyond compare with eclectic, innovative artists........1998-12-18

This CD collects some of the most innovative and eclectic artists in popular music today performing in raw, unedited acoustic sets from KCRW public radio in Southern California. It is a compilation beyond compare. The late Jeff Buckley sings an inspiring and moving rendition of 'So Real.' Radiohead performs 'Subterranean Homesick Alien' for the first time. Tom Waits sings a song he wrote with his wife with such beauty and grace that I was moved to tears.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as I hoped.......2006-08-21

I was excited to get this CD but unfortunately the songs are too short- a fact I overlooked as I like to 'get on in' to my classic grooves, and I don't play it much at all.

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-08-31

Having very carefully chosen this CD based on my own memory of the tunes, the music sampler available and, most importantly, comments from other reviewers, it transpires that only 3/20 tracks are more than 4 minutes long. Majority of the tracks are between 3-4 minutes long. Not what I would term as 'Super Rare Disco' at all. Rare Disco is surely the full length 12 inch mixes that would have been played in the clubs, as opposed to radio edits!!! Yes, I realised there were 20 tracks in total on this CD...but not one of the previous reviwers stated all 20 tracks were on just ONE CD, nor the fact that majority of the tracks were radio edits. Shame, as majority of the tracks themselves are very good. Disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars worth buying.......2005-01-13

Super Rare Disco, Vol. 2, is a definite must have for anyone looking for authentic disco classics. Although not every track is great the majority are, and one doesn't have to hunt around buying a lot of CD's for one track. It's worth the investment.

    5 out of 5 stars SUPER RARE DISCO, Vol. 1 & 2.......2004-04-19

One of the best collections of 1970's hustle music. As a former New Yorker, I still own hundreds of hustle 45's and 12-inch dance records from the 70's and wanted to get the same songs on CDs. This collection of 40 hard-to-find disco songs (on Volume 1 & 2) is great. I liked Volume 2 slightly better than Volume 1, but both are excellent. Even the liner notes are incredibly well-written by a New Yorker who really appreciates classic disco music and who lived through the NY dance club scene in the 70's.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection!.......2004-02-09

If you are a disco fan that has "The Disco Box" and/or "The Disco Years, Vol. 1-7" and are looking for something different, then look no further then this collection along with volume 1. It's a great supplement with the well-known mainstream artists. The packaging is superb: entertaining liner notes along with song credits and chart positions. Highly recommended along with volume 1.

5 out of 5 stars Almost As Overdue As Volume 2.......2004-05-10

From the late fifties to the early seventies Burt Bacharach and Hal David were incredibly prolific, working with an amazing roster of artists, and Rhino's excellent three-CD set only captured the tip of their creative iceberg. This set goes two discs further into their famous collaboration with almost no crossover to the Rhino collection- a great and overdue gift to fans and collectors. The only two common tracks are Gene Pitney's "Fool Killer" and the Hollies' "After the Fox", and only a half-dozen compositions overlap, with Mavis Staples providing the obligatory "House Is Not A Home" alongside the Buckinghams' truly worthy cover of "Are You There" and the Exciters' terrific take of "It's Love that Really Counts", to name a few.

Among the tracks that are worth the price of the whole set are Peggy March's "Try To See It My Way", Connie Francis' gorgeous take of "Wanting Things", and the hard-to-find Jackie Deshannon gem "Windows and Doors". Other highlights from Etta James, Del Shannon, Gene Pitney, the Walker Brothers, Bobby Vee, and Jay and the Americans balance the few missteps: the New Christy Minstrels ( a painful cowboy novelty song), British Adam Faith's very un-country "Country Music Holiday", and a few early efforts that are basically juvenilia from the early days of this sophisticated partnership.

Many of these songs have great melodies and well-crafted lyrics that barely miss combining to form a hit or a certified Bacharach/David classic (and, as mentioned above, a few here are genuine overlooked classics). And even the decidely minor material nearly always contains something- some unusual chord pattern or tempo- to show that the innovative and inspired Bacharach has been there.

My one quibble- and it's not a minor one- is the glib liner notes about how cool Burt is instead of the badly needed track-by-track annotation. It would be very nice to have recording dates and production credits. How many of these are actually Bacharach productions as well as Bacharach/David compositions? That's a pretty glaring blunder from a label as good as Raven. But I'll take it, with hopes that we won't have to wait another thirty years for a well-justified volume two.

Natalie Merchant sings like an angel and this album is so cool
    every song is a winner!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2004-11-08

I bought this collection some ten years ago, and it has aged very, very well. The performances are great, and there's a real cohesion in them in terms of production. Whoever produced the CD really loves music, and must have made many mix tapes in his/her life, because it has the ebb and flow of a really excellent mix tape, with shifting moods and styles. I enjoy quite a bit of it, but the highlights for me are Lucinda Williams' cover of a Nick Drake song, the David Wilcox song, and the Peter Himmelman song, which also features an *amazing*, beautiful, lyrical guitar solo coming straight from the heart. In fact, "Always in Disguise" is really my favorite song overall from this collection. BUY IT TODAY!!!

5 out of 5 stars A benchmark for live to radio compilations.......2004-04-28

This compilation is, at the time of writing, the best part of ten years old. And, in my humble opinion, it has never been bettered. Production quality is first rate, performances are almost flawless and the mix of music is spot on. You and yours can't fail to be sucked in by this one. John Cale's first poem blending seemlessly into Tori Amos doing 'Silent all these years', Beck's 'Mexico' is hilarious and wry even after all this time, The Modern's just don't want to end and you won't want them to, Lindsay Buckingham comes up with a magnificent arrangement for an old Fleetwood Mac tune (since copied badly by The Dixie Chicks) and a just wonderful ode to Chet Baker to finish. This is a CD that makes much of modern chill out laughable and shows what can be acheived by a group of people who really love music. It is a primer for the rest of the Rare on Air series and a great place to begin. Grab this while it is still in print.

    5 out of 5 stars best compilation i own.......2002-03-20

i originally bought it for "never goin back again" an acoustic version by lindsey buckingham. but there are about seven other really strong songs on the album. and how they tracked the selections is something you could tell a lot of thought and time was put into. songs in general flow one into the next beautifully, especially track twelve into thirteen. highly reccomend to anyone considering.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent document of the best of the early 1990's.......2000-08-31

Rare On Air Vol 1. is the first in a series of 5 live compilation cd's from southern california's KCRW. "Morning Becomes Eclectic" hosted by Chris Douridas was possibly the greatest music radio show of it's time in all of the U.S. On any given morning from 9am to noon, live performers from the likes of Beck to Joni Mitchell to Patti Smith show up to turn in intimate and often startlingly great performances. This first edition is the best so far and features excellent songs by John Cale, Michael Penn, and Tori Amos. After Douridas left the station for a new job at Dreamworks, the morning show fell flat with new DJ Nic Harcourt. Some say it's picking up steam again and luckily the whole world can tune in via the internet. The first 3 in the series are all worthwile and this particular addition shows why KCRW is a groundbreaking music radio station.

5 out of 5 stars One happy accident.......2004-01-18

Sad is the only word that describes the state of most of our radio airwaves. Sad, because by listening to most of the albums of rare and live material issued by Santa Monica's eclectic radio station, KCRW, reminds once more that there's much that we're not been provided by commercial radio (sure enough, a reason why it's called commercial!)

'Rare on Air: Volume 2' compiles the station's live sessions from KCRW's now legendary program "Morning Becomes Eclectic" recorded between 1993 and 1994, now onto its second decade! I hadn't heard their previous compilations: up to now, beside listening to the station, which I highly recommend -tune in at kcrw.org-, I'd purchased the "KCRW: Sounds Eclectic Too" album back in 2002. Well, I was so gladly surprised to discover that KCRW's roots and commitment to only the best music run deep into the heart of what's available out there, to bring back some otherwise unbelievably good and tough-to-find works and artits.

As for the album, specifically, Glass' "Opening" and Joni Mitchell's "Just Like This Train" blew my mind, but so did the rest of the material, most of which introduced new artists to me (something I just LOVE about KCRW!) To sum it up, all I have to say is: get it! I was extremely lucky to run into it (because it's out of print) at a local indy record store for an incredible $5! You might not be as lucky, but once you get it, you will dig it so much, that you won't regret paying a little more for it. Enjoy... peace out!

5 out of 5 stars warm and human.......2002-05-07

Warm, sweet, human, and raw. An end-to-end listening will put you in a contemplative, positive mood. This is not background music - it deserves your undivided attention, but it does not demand it of you; it is extremely easy on the ears and mind.

This compilation does not attempt to combine an inordinate number of musical genres, which, in my opinion, is a common problem with so-called "eclectic" collections. Rather, this is a coherent selection of artists and performances that blend well with one another.

A beautifully transparent production. Even the two triphop selections sound uncommonly clean and live.

5 out of 5 stars Broaden your horizons.......2000-12-14

Why do I love compilations like this? Because I find myself listening to--and enjoying--music I would never have listened to otherwise. Who'd've guessed that a rocker like me would ever like MC 900 Ft Jesus? Cibo Mato, I've not entirely warmed to, although I understand why it's so loved.

Lovers of music, incidentally, should visit kcrw.org where you can listen to their music programming 24/7. As eclectic as this disc is, it just glances on how truly adventurous kcrw is as a radio station. How I miss living in Los Angeles.

5 out of 5 stars Just listen to hear the true value of public radio........1998-10-14

A wonderful collection of songs from all kinds of artists, the Rare on Air series demonstrates the breadth of music on offer on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic Show. For me the highlight is "The City Sleeps" by MC 900ft Jesus, a slowly burning groove beneath a tale of metropolitan arson. But hip-hop is just one facet of Rare on Air Volume 2 - from Joni Mitchell's 90's folk to Cibo Matto's trippy pop, the whole series shows the true value of public broadcasting. Commercial broadcasters just don't (or won't), showcase such a wide variety of musical styles. Without commerce as their raison d'etre, stations such as KCRW can afford to broaden the horizons of their listenership, and that's why a CD like Rare on Air should be part of any open-minded music fans collection.

I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do!

5 out of 5 stars A nice selection of obscure and underrated R&B oldies........2004-05-24

Given the extreme rarity of most of these tracks, the sound quality is quite good. The songs by The Enticers ("Storyteller"),The People's Choice ("Run To Me"), The Optimistics ("Should I Let Myself Go") and GQ ("Strange Feelings") justify the entire CD's price but the others are also nice and all are excellent examples of soul ballad oldies that went nowhere but that deserve to be "rediscovered" by oldies fans now that they are available on CD. Thanks to Alan Beck at ITP Records for releasing another fine compilation of rare oldies.

3 out of 5 stars Great Album Filled With The Best Songs.......2001-01-23

This Album is great, especially the song by Barbara Mason "You Can Be With The One You Don't Love" for that song I would alone give it 5 Stars (*****)! The songs are great on this album, if you are really into those hard to find oldies, the ones where they can take you back, or create new memories. Over all This album is great. Oh, One More thing! Too bad that song by Barbara Mason can only be found on this CD, it can also be found on "The Very Best of Barbara Mason" too bad that album is out of print, if it ever comes back in I strongly suggest that you get that album!!!
