Beautiful cd - what a wonderful voice - those were the good old days!
Beautiful voice.......2007-01-12
Excellent italian music. Reminiscint of my early days in New York with the Italian-American genre of music.
the greatest Italian singer ever.......2006-05-22
First of all, the best Italian-American album ever. Put this in the CD player, pour a glass of wine, sit by the pool, add a little salami, provolone, and tender olives, lite the porch lites out back, and you are back listening to the songs Mama and Papa sang. This CD is so good you cant stop listening to it. I am not kidding. My kids listen to it with me. Mt father-in-law and I would sit by the pool every Sunday night, sip wine and listen to Jerry...it was heaven on Earth...and I miss those nights so much...buy this CD and see for yourself...you will know exactly what I mean. The memories are all we have left. Come join me.

Here's a yummy CD platter, filled to the brim with prime examples of the irrepressible Giuseppe Di Stefano, singing what he was born to sing. The tenor is in close to pristine voice throughout these 1953-7 sessions, with none of the frayed edges and crooning that seeped into his work in the 1960s. More to the point, Di Stefano approaches familiar favorites like "O Solo Mio" and "Santa Lucia" with a kind of seriousness of purpose and elegant restraint that will be revelations to listeners weaned on showboating by the Three Tenors. You may, however, wish to investigate Testament's companion stereo volume, which has better sound and a wider variety of material. But Di Stefano fans will gladly dig in. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Guiseppe di Strfano sings Neapolitan Songs.......2007-01-09
Neapolitan songs sung by Guiseppe Di Stefano was one of my favourite vynil long play records. I no longer have the facility to play vynil records so I was delighted to be able to acquire this CD version from Amazon. I believe that the original recordings were made in 1953 - certainly my vynil was from that era. The digital remastering is very successful and we aficionados have cause to be grateful. A huge part of the enjoyment is the characteristic Italian accompaniment, flowing, soaring, romantic and full bodied, but never over-intrusive, by the orchestra conducted by Dino Olivieri. I mark the CD 4 and not 5 purely because of the advances, since 1953, in recording techniques.
Di Stefano e magnifico!.......2006-12-25
Giuseppe Di Stefano's magnificent tenor voice was never put to better use than singing these Neapolitan songs. They were written for his type of voice and he was born to sing them. His voice is liquid gold; it combines sustained lyricism with tremendous emotional urgency and power. Sweetness and plaitiveness are all there when they are needed to express the text. Diction is perfect. The orchestral arrangements recorded here are very operatic and Di Stefano's voice fills every corner of them. These songs are treasures and through Di Stefano they are brought to the the heights of musical expression.
Distefano has spoken!.......2006-11-28
I get furious when people like the gentleman from Australia waste their alloted space delving in minutiae when it comes to reviewing this album of Neapolitan Songs sung by the greatest exponent of this genre (according to people like Pavarotti, Delmonaco and Corelli). No doubt these gems call for a beautiful - yes, beautiful - voice that can also sustain diminuendo, stress - where needed, passion, pathos, etc. it's no secret that every singer since Caruso - tenor, baritone or classification-less has attempted this repertoire; but none has ALL these qualities..this is Pippo's domain and he has spoken! Buy this and thank the Lord it's available now!
Come back to Sorrento with Giuseppe Di Stefano........2003-07-07
These little Neapolitan songs, many dating from the C19th, travel well across international boundaries, language barriers, and time divisions. Giuseppe di Stefano recorded dozens of them during his prime, and Testament has gathered together 21 of them, recorded in the 1950s, on this CD. The producer and conductor was Dino Olivieri who, twenty years earlier, had added to the repertoire himself and conducted countless records of Neapolitan songs sung by Tito Schipa and Beniamino Gigli.
Di Stefano sings here with more musicianship than the latter and a more robust voice than the former. Dino Olivieri, who likes swirling strings and problematic counterpoints, contrives occasionally with Di Stefano to enact musically something in total contradiction to the words. My favorite songs here - I' tu vurria vasà - depicts the singer lying beside his beloved at dawn and hesitating even to kiss her lest it wake her. What we hear is a performance that is so loud as to suggest something that might lift the roof off the Festspielhaus at Bayreuth. Perhaps the blame lies with the balance engineers. The sound engineering is of the "zoom lens" type, evening out all the dynamic changes in Di Stefano's singing so that everything is heard at a steady forte volume throughout.
If this is one of your favorite singers, you'll want to have this CD, but if you love listening to these perennial favorite songs, which always start in a minor key and then switch to the tonic major key half way through each verse, then try versions by other singers.
Without peer.......2003-03-26
di Stefano is the standard for singing Neapolitan Songs. There is exuberance, warmth, pathos - everything. He puts it all into these gems. I am extremely glad Testament made these discs available. You can't go wrong with these, they are utterly fabulous!!

Customer Reviews:
All hail the Queen of Early Music!.......2004-10-27
I had the pleasure recently of attending a recital with Miss Kirkby and Fretwork, here in Houston. I had heard of her, but wasn't all too familiar with her voice. Then, I decided a couple of days before the performance that I would buy one of her discs, for her to autograph. Honestly, I chose this two-disc recital because it had a nice picture of her, with space for her to autograph!
I am happy to say that I chose what is surely one of the most pleasant soprano recitals on the market. Her voice is essentially "white," as opposed to a full operatic voice with vibrato, etc. Nonetheless, what she does with this ample selection of music, esp. Mozart, is truly incredible.
Rise, Glory, Rise, as mentioned by at least one other reviewer, is nothing short of stunning. I like the way she sings, "Bid the drum, bid the drum," with much enthusiasm. The orchestration is spectacular baroque, with the expert conducting of Hogwood, who conducts on the entire recital. (I had the pleasure to hear him conduct Ariodante here in Houston a couple of seasons back, at HGO).
Speaking of Ariodante, there is an aria from that opera, as well as other Handel arias on the first disc. Now, those of us who cut our operatic teeth on Joan Sutherland or Beverly Sills may not appreciate Emma Kirkby at first. Being used to Joan's upward transpositions, interpolated high notes, and intricate cadenzas, it took a couple of listens to appreciate Kirby's rendition of Tornami a Vagheggar. We must remember that the Sutherland and Sills interpretations took lots of liberties that Handel didn't necessarily intend!
While I do enjoy the first disc, I relish the second disc from start to end. First, there are two arias from Haydn's Creation. The orchestration is sublime, and Emma calms us with her "cooing" in the second selection. Then comes Mozart, which fills the rest of the second disc. Kirby's L'amero, Saro Costante is a miracle. To give you an example, I have heard Leontyne Price's interpretation, and had previously dismissed hte aria as a bore. Kirkby, however, sounds so sweet and virginal, so much so that you can really picture a young lady singing about fidelity. The purity and exquisiteness of Kirby's singing will melt you.
Another joy is Voi Avete Un Cor Fedele. Kirkby isn't a coloratura fanatic like our beloved Sutherland, but when she does coloratura, it is enthralling. Here, she uses rapid coloratura, a la Cecilia Bartoli, to stunning effect.
It would have been easy to choose a lot of Mozart standard arias, like Matern aller Arten. However, Emma steers clear of those chestnuts on this recital, instead treating us to lesser-known works. Just when you start to settle in the second disc, she melts you again with arias in German, from one of Mozart's lesser-known operas. The first of these three arias moved me to tears. Words simply can't express the purity of her tone, and the tender care she lavishes on the text! Beguiling, to say the least.
Finally, there is Non Temerte, Amato Bene. I first heard this aria on a recently-issued two-disc recital of Teresa Berganza. While Berganza charms us with her warm tone and vibrato, Emma Kirkby's interpretation is no less valid.
Even if you don't particularly care for the current early-music revival, any lover of the human voice and operatic arias should buy this treasurable recital.
An uplifting experience.......2002-06-05
This is not a muscial review. That would be beyond my talents. No, this is a "spiritual" review and here is the reason. I had experienced a personal tragedy and turned often to music to revive my spirits and maintain my hope that things would right themselves in my life. Works such as Hayden's "Creation," Beethoven's "Fidelio," many of Bach's cantatas, Vivaldi's "Glorias," etc. Then I bought this CD. Immediately, I couldn't get enough of it. I felt uplifted everytime I listened, and it wasn't the same track each time that gave me that small feeling of joy that only music can provide. All is well again in my life and I continue to adore listening to this CD. For me, it was, and continues to be, magical.
Mysterious Beauty.......2001-11-19
Classical music is one of the greatest joys in life. Opera on the other hand, is often too melodramatic to stomach. But there is nothing more enchanting than an Aria. On this 2 CD set, Emma Kirkby sings in sweet exultation. Her voice expresses power and agility yet a limpid tranquility. Clarity is the greatest achievement of any musician. With the aid of precision accompaniment on period instruments, shameless perfection is delivered. She soothes the soul longing for beauty. Her marvelous Soprano is rendered on 25 tracks in this eclectic ensemble. If you are a champion of Handel or a devotee of Mozart, you should not hesitate to purchase this CD. Emma Kirkby will have you beaming with delight and pining for more. Surely it will be one of the brightest of your collection.
The divine voice of Emma Kirkby.......2000-06-07
An outstanding collection of Italian, German and English arias, beautifully sung by my favourite soprano voice Emma Kirkby - the diva of renaissance and baroque music. All the arias are enchanting, especially "Rise, Glory, rise" an aria from Arne's opera "Rosamond". The conducting and playing of Christopher Hogwood and his team of period-performance specialist The Academy of Ancient Music are as always superb. These are all arias to have one wanting to go back to the complete operas. Strongly recommended.

The Art of Serious Fun.......2007-07-01
While most opera stars are submitting to record label hype and narrow artistic freedom, Jennifer Larmore seems to be flourishing in the recording studio. With Opera Rara and now Chandos behind her, she continues to offer sumptuous recordings that are both entertaining and of great artistic caliber. Certainly Larmore does not have to prove herself as she has been performing for nearly 25 years. Anyone who has seen her live knows she is the real deal and she is in top form on this arias disc. Now, mind you, she is singing both mezzo and soprano roles here. And in English. I was skeptical. Being a huge Larmore fan, I though "uh, oh"...My last Chandos purchase was Elizabeth Futral's arias disc and I was not impressed. But here the translations (sung in delicious theatrical English), top-notch singing by Je La and perfect conducting by David Parry with the Philharmonia Orchestra combine to make a highly addictive disc that will go down in history with Larmore's classics Where Shall I Fly and Call Me Mister. She really sets the bar high for other singers.
Thankfully, Larmore goes out of her comfort zone and sings some arias that one would not normally associate with this fearless singer. The Don Carlos and Trovatore arias will certainly give her naysayers something to chew on, but she does it! Note the last few bars of "O Hated Gift". I was on the edge of my seat.
The opening number ("Star of the Evening" from Adriana Lecouvreur) alone is worth the price of the disc. Orchestra and singer match brilliantly and Larmore's final bars brought tears to my eyes. It's good stuff.
The weak spots are minor. Poor Colin Lee is left on the floor in the Favorita duet. A more experienced tenor would have made this duet electrifying. On the other hand, Larmore alone (track 2) singing "O My Beloved" from Favorita proves (as she did in 2001 with OONY) that she should be singing this role on the stage and in a full recording while we're at it. She is Leonora and the tension she creates is heartbreaking.
I could have done without Hence, Iris Hence Away, heard on her In Performance DVD and Where Shall I Fly cd (surely there are other Handel arias, but perhaps that's another Chandos disc in the works???!!!), but it displays how she can still sing Handel like no other. The Tancredi aria is a nice surprise.
The Gioconda track is a blood and guts duet thanks to Susan Patterson and Larmore's singing. I love how Opera Rara and Chandos recital cds always include duets and more. Larmore is a generous singer and part of her genius is how she works off other artists.
As with every Larmore recital disc, she closes with a treat. Juliet's Waltz Song from Gounod's Romeo and Juliet???? Is she kidding??? Nope. I've heard many a soprano struggle though this aria and merely pull it off with a pinched high note. Should Larmore be singing this aria? Hell, no...Can she? Hell, yes!!! But what's so special is she sings it with pure pleasure; as if she'd sung this song her whole career. Not as a mezzo slumming it in soprano territory. And I think that's what she's trying to tell us here. Have fun, be true to your art form and never pander to your audience.
Larmore at her best again!.......2007-06-01
Jennifer Larmore is my favorite mezzosoprano since the very first time. Such an extraordinary artist! To enjoy!

wonderful.......2007-04-04
This record is wonderful; simply Jessye Norman. What else can I say: loved it!
Favorite Soprano: Gorgeous Dramatic Voice.......2006-11-05
The first time I ever heard Jessye Norman sing was a recording of Dich Teure Halle from Wagner's Tannhauser, and I was immediately enchanted. She has a gorgeous ringing tone and powerful voice. However, she can also bring her voice to a delicate sweetness that other dramatic sopranos find difficult. This album is put together particularly well. I love her Carmen and Isolde here, but I cannot stop listening to the other songs either, the non-operatic ones included. This my favorite CD, and I would definitely reccomend it to anyone considering the purchase.
Amazing.... if you get it somewhere else.......2006-05-28
I got it for HKD $69 in HKV in Hong Kong (which is around 8.70USD)
A MUST HAVE..........2006-02-09
The American soprano Jessye Norman was born in Augusta, Georgia (the segregated South) on September 15, 1945 in a family of amateur musicians; her mother a pianist, her father a singer in a local choir.
Norman received a scholarship to Howard University (a historically black university in Washington, D.C.) -NOT INDIANA-, graduating in 1967 with a degree in music. The following year, she won the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. She made her operatic debut in 1969 as Elisabeth in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser at the Berlin State Opera, and in subsequent years performed with various German and Italian opera companies. She returned to the US to make her professional concert debut at Lincoln Center in 1973.
Amazing Voice.......2005-07-06
Jessye Norman has possibly the greatest voice I have ever heard. Being a bass/baritone, I usually shy away from higher voices (especially tenors), but I find this soprano to be flooring. For being a classicaly trained vocalist (she attended Indiana University) Ms. Norman has an incredibly versatile voice. In this album alone, she sings broad French arias, light Mozart, spirituals, and Broadway. Each is done superbly. Out of every track, her rendition of "Ave Maria" is my favorite. She sings it so tenderly and intimately, it is like she is singing it directly in front of you. You will be moved, certainly.
I suggest this CD to everyone, a fan of classical music or not. It is important for everyone to have these songs to relax, calm down, or to just listen to. You would not regret it.

Supreme Verdi singing.......2005-01-10
Eileen Farrell's voice is a magnificent instrument. With a rounded tone, beautiful overtones, sumptuous middle notes, secure low notes, and serviceable (re: adequate) high notes, enormous volume, and an unmistakable timbre, the voice is awe inspiring. To hear this soprano singing softly is a great experience. To hear her unleash the massive power of which her voice is capable is an even greater experience. The recording has superb stereo sound, but Farrell's voice is definitely not as loud here as it was live in a concert hall or in the opera house. Her three duets with Richard Tucker are supremely sung. Tucker is miked closer than Farrell so that she doesn't blow him away with her voice. Still, the Tucker voice is a very big instrument, with a wonderful tenor sound and ringing high notes. His pitch is well nigh perfect. On top of this, he emotes wonderfully. The duet from "Don Carlo", "Io vengo a domandar", is spine-chilling in its brilliance and artistry. The lyric singing displayed in the soft sections is heavenly, and the more impassioned parts are brought vividly to life by Tucker and Farrell. Verdi's orchestration in this duet is greatness itself. I wish Columbia had recorded Farrell in "Tu che le vanità" instead of the Willow Song. Still, the Willow Song allows Farrell to show off her magnificent pianissimo, so beautiful and well controlled for a voice of such great size. In "Pace, pace, mio Dio", Farrell sings wonderfully and with alert attention to both text and drama. Her final cries of "Maledizione!" must have been deafening in the recording studio. She displays impressive agility for a voice of such size in the cabaletta to "Tacea la notte in placida" and her piano singing in "D'amor sull'ali rosee" is a delight to hear. Her duet with Tucker from "Aïda" is great to hear. Her "Come in quest'ora bruna" is lightly sung, with wondeful delicacy and a superb, beautifully floated mezzo forte high note on the word "fior" near the aria's end.
This CD contains Verdi singing the likes of which have totally disappeared from today's opera stages. Get it while you can!
TRUE BEAUTY.......2004-12-20
EILEEN FARRELL IS SO UNDERRATED!! HER VOICE IS SO FULL AND ROUND. EVER SONG SHE DOES ON THIS CD WAS PERFECTION AND I DON'T USE THAT WORD LIGHTLY. IT'S TOO BAD SHE DIDN'T RECORD MORE BECAUSE HER VOICE IS SO STUNNING...BUT UNLIKE OTHER MAJOR OPERA STARS SHE SEEMED VERY LOW KEY, NOT DETERMINED TO BE KNOWN EVERY WHERE TO EVERYONE. SHE HAD THIS VOICE AND SHE SANG AND THAT WAS IT. I HOPE SOMEDAY THAT SHE IS SEEN FOR WHO SHE REALLY IS, ONE OF THE BEST LYRIC-DRAMATIC SINGERS! BRAVA!
Verdi singing doesn't get better than this!.......2003-04-10
Eileen Farrell. What can one say? Well, for starters, she is probably the best female Verdian that America has ever produced. I am sorry Price fans, but Farrell is better than Price. Yes, Price is more famous and deserves her fame very much, but that doesn't mean she was the greatest American spinto there ever was. Farrell beats Price in the areas of pianissimo, diction, and identifying with the characters she sings instead of prima donna showoff singing. And no, I am not a racist. Farrell's voice soars in Verdi's music. Her magnificent instrument is capable of anything Verdi throws at her. She has an excellent trill. Her pianissimos and diminuendos are world-class. She really digs deep for characterization. Her "Pace, pace, mio Dio" ranks with Tebaldi's version. Farrell's version of the Willow Song from "Otello" would definitely make Tebaldi jealous. Her "Ave Maria" definitely rivals Caballé's stunning 1964 version. Farrell almost sounds like Tebaldi when she sings in her upper register. Her "Ritorna vincitor!" is awesome in its scope. Angry and self-loathing in the first half, then gently innocent in the second. Amazing. Her "Come in quest'ora bruna" demonstrates her wonderful agility. She beats every soprano who has recorded "Tacea la notte placida" and "D'amor sull'ali rosee" with her own masterful renditions. Her pianissimos, trills, and stunning agility are showcased in these two arias. Among the three duets with Richard Tucker (an excellent tenor and partner for Farrell), the only one worthy of the two's talents is "Pur ti riveggo" from "Aïda". The two other arias, one from "Don Carlo" and the other from "Un Ballo in Maschera", are two of Verdi's most overrated. If you want to listen to justly praised and magnificent love duets, listen to the master of all Italian love duets, Giacomo Puccini. Verdi, as great as he is, cannot come close to Puccini in expressing love through operatic music.
This disc is very highly recommended. I pray that every up and coming spinto, American or otherwise, listens to Farrell's singing closely and learns from her. It is truly a disgrace to Verdi's name that Angela Gheorghiu's Verdi recital has been praised to the heavens by the blind music critics. No light lyric soprano should even consider recording an entire album of Verdi soprano arias, no matter how talented they are. When you hear this recital, you will be mad at Gheorghiu for even attempting to sing this music. This just may be the best Verdi recital ever recorded.
Eileen Farrell should be heard by every Verdi fan!!!.......2003-04-10
Just buy it! You'll be glad you did.
In her prime, Eileen Farrell had an enormous voice capable of thrilling, wall-shaking power. Her voice's tone is one of the most rounded of all recorded sopranos', even matching the rounded tone of Joan Sutherland's voice. The voice itself has an unmistakable timbre. Besides the magnificent voice, this lady can really sing!
One of the greatest voices EVER.......2002-07-09
Eileen Farrell was a fabulous singer and had one of the greatest voices ever. She was also one of those rare opera singers who was also comfortable and skillful with popular music. She was also an even rarer talent in that she valued her family life more than her career. Even so, she is one of the all time great sopranos.
This recording contains ten glorious arias and duets from Verdi operas such as Aida, Il trovatore, Don Carlo, and Otello (and others). I don't know how you can not want this in your collection. Just glorious music making and a voice to die for.

Impressive performances from Lanza's final years.......2004-12-18
This CD contains most of the soundtrack from Lanza's final movie, the 1958 For the First Time, together with the 1959 album Mario Lanza Sings Caruso Favorites.
By 1958 Lanza's lirico spinto tenor had darkened significantly, acquiring a baritonal richness in its middle and lower registers, while still retaining the celebrated top notes for which he was justly famous. On his best days, he was also a more sensitive singer than he had sometimes been in his Hollywood period. This is immediately noticeable on the operatic selections included here: Vesti La Giubba; the Otello Death Scene (Niun Mi Tema); and the Grand March from Aida. On the first two numbers, Lanza phrases beautifully and avoids marring these arias with the hammy histrionics that many more celebrated names have indulged in elsewhere. Dark with haunting overtones, his voice is by now ideal for both Canio and Otello.
The Grand March scene is also impressive, with Lanza delivering some staggering B flats over the deafening Rome Opera Orchestra and chorus. All three operatic selections from For the First Time were recorded (and subsequently filmed) at the Rome Opera House, and the effect that Lanza had on the musicians present was extraordinary. "A very musical tenor of enormous possibilities, with an exceptional timbre" was the verdict of the theatre's then Artistic Director Riccardo Vitale.
The first half of For the First Time is much lighter, and includes the pleasant title song, Come Prima, along with a sweet and all-too-brief O Mon Amour. There is also the novelty of hearing Lanza singing in German in the rousing Hofbrauhaus Song, as well as a ridiculous rock and roll number called Pineapple Pickers. (Typically, BMG place this next to Vesti la Giubba on the CD, with no thought for the massive jump in musical style and content between the tracks.) O Sole Mio sounds a little laboured here, and rings out much more thrillingly in the movie. But with the exception of the videotape of the actual film (reviewed elsewhere on this site), many of these selections have never sounded better. There is still the ever-present sandiness that mars all of Lanza's stereo releases, but at least this is an improvement on the soundtrack's earlier outing on the Double Feature CD.
My only gripe is that the delightful Cosi Fan Tutte trio - E Voi Ridete - has been omitted. Instead we have three uneventful (and irritating) non-Lanza musical interludes. *Mercifully* missing, however, is the tenor's La Donna 'e Mobile. Uncharacteristically strained, it was his least impressive performance of the aria, and the only vocal lapse in the entire film.
The final twelve selections from the Caruso Favorites album also feature Lanza in mostly fine form. As with all the tenor's 1959 recordings, however, the reproduction of his voice (though curiously *not* the orchestra) is less than ideal, and the ever-present distortion - particularly on his top notes - mars some of the best moments. Gripes aside, this is an important album in the Lanza canon. Among the highlights are the Neapolitan song Senza Nisciuno; a tasteful Vaghissima Sembianza, replete with two beautiful High As; the daunting Serenata; and three exquisite Tosti songs: L'Alba Separa Dalla Luce L'Ombra, Pour Un Baiser and Ideale.
L'Alba Separa dalla Luce l'Ombra deserves special mention. Lanza is appropriately operatic on this miniature masterpiece, and although his voice sounds a little heavy at times, the impact of his performance is very moving. From "Chiudimi, O notte, nel tuo sen materno," (Envelop me, O night, in your maternal [...]) onwards, Lanza is in full control of the song, faltering only slightly on the climactic note on "eterno" (though this may, in fact, be due to the distortion). Lapses aside, L'Alba Separa is a fine example of Lanza's artistic maturity.
Among the few lesser moments, Mario runs out of steam in the second half of La Mia Canzone, and is subjected to an overly boisterous arrangement on Santa Lucia, which sounds more akin to a march than a lilting ode to the Bay of Naples! At times Lanza does sound tired, and as one perceptive reviewer has noted, we miss the characteristic smile of his earlier voice. Ironically, critics and habitual Lanza-knockers are much more likely to praise this album for the very reason that the tenor *is* so subdued.
Caruso Favorites and For the First Time - together with the brilliant Neapolitan album Mario! Lanza At His Best (also reviewed on this site) - represent the tenor's most impressive singing from the final period of his life. As Lanza authority Lindsay Perigo has noted, the tenor's voice on all three albums is often "hauntingly ethereal." In short, these are not performances that are easily forgotten.

Repertoire for a goddess.......2004-02-20
This is perhaps one of the greatest compilations of arias ever. Sutherland was always at her blazing best when recorded live. I'm really sick of the stupid, poisoned arrows several people here NEED to shoot towards another goddess (Callas) in order to promote Dame Joan. She is in no need of that. Enjoy the recital of a lifetime!!!!
...How can you resist?.......2003-06-30
These are the primest of Dame Joan's recordings...This really is a no brainer.
Don't let the price fool you. This cd contains some of the most spectacular coloratura singing that the young Joan Sutherland ever did.
I would buy several, keep one for myself, and give the others as presents. A bargain and a half.
fantastic.......2003-06-04
Shows a young Sutherland as the greatest soprano of the XX Century. Way surpassing Callas, Caballe, and Sills.
The voice is perfectly clear, focus. There is no mushines or poor diction as she did later in her career.
Buy this cd and hear the possibilities of the human voice. She sings the most difficult music as if it was nothing. The high notes are massive and solid. The trill sublime.
Dame Joan is beyond perfection here.
And the price! A steal. One of the best cd I've ever bought.
This cd is unbeatable in all aspects!
fabulous.......2003-05-24
This contains live recordings of prime year Joan Sutherland. She is perfect in all her arias. The voice sublime, silvery in clarity, and technique beyond comparison.
She sings some of the most fiendishly difficult arias ever written as if strolling in the park.
Hear her as she was when she was supreme and realize what all the fuzz is all about.
The highlights are everything. Especially the Lucia Mad Scene and Sempre Libera. They are better than even her decca recordings, and being live, much more exciting!
This is also about $...! What a bargain. I bought 10 to give as gifts.
the best bargain on yahoo.......2002-02-06
well, this cost about six dollars. yet it contains sutherland when she was the undisputed coloratura of the golden era. she never sounded that good again. which is to say, this is one of the greatest sampling of la stupenda's art. and she was the quintessential queen of bel canto, perhaps of all time.

Disappointing music selection.......2007-06-10
The Puccini aias are very good. I was disappointed by the selection of Verdi arias.
