I used various tracks from this CD for a Cub Scout ceremony and it really set the mood..I searched on Amazon for 3 hours trying to find the right drum music and this is certainly it !

4 out of 5 stars Very good new age-native fusion.......2005-06-10

Discount the self-important blather from "professional" drummers and First Nation/Capitolized Ethnic Group people you see here and buy this CD if you enjoy better quality new age music in a native vein. This CD and its highly successful predecessor was NEVER meant to be a hard-core exploration of genuine Native American drumming, flute or chanting, though it masterfully incorporates such music alongside other simple nativist percussion. Yes, persons looking outside the world music (or new age) genres for actual Native chanting and drumming may be disappointed, but it never hurts to open your ears to new things. But if that's too hard and you crave the "real thing," may I suggest Tokeya Inajin, Dik Darnell or Carlos Nakai.

4 out of 5 stars EARTH CENTERED MUSIC.......2005-04-28

I HEARD THIS CD IN A SPIRITUAL SERVICE. I ENJOYED IT! I SEARCH IN THE WEB AND I BOUGHT IT! I LISTEN IT IN THE CAR OR WHEN I WANT TO FEEL MY SELF "EARTH CENTERED". REALLY IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR "DRUMS" LIKE IN LATIN MUSIC, MODERN MUSIC, IT ISNT.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SOFT/ACTIVE RELAXING MUSIC, SO THAT YOU CAN FEEL ONE WITH THE EARTH, AND YOU GET FLASH BACK OF OTHER PRIMITIVES TIMES, THIS IS FOR YOU. THAT'S MY EXPERIENCE.

1 out of 5 stars Indian Welk.......2004-10-18

Although this may sound pleasant to some people I would imagine it's an insult to others. Just another example of the exploitation of the true Americans. It's like there was a Lawrance Welk of native American music only worse. An equivelant might be buying a Metallica cd and hearing Madonna music coming from the speakers. You expected something with some real spirit but you got watered down syrupy bubblegum music instead. It's not the real thing. Besides that I'm a professional drummer, and I'm definitly not impressed with the drumming. But having said that, if you just want some pop music to listen to and delude yourself that your listening to real native American music then this is for you.

It would probably be better to rename it and put a different picture on the cover that would be less insulting to the people it's making a mockery of and more suitable to the disco minded crowd it's apparently trying to foster.

1 out of 5 stars Sacred Spirit Drums.......2004-04-28

My husband is First Nation and has played on traditional Pow Wow drums. The music on this CD seems very contrived. I think it is better to get real First Nation drum music rather than to turn it into this unrecognizable, synthesized and distorted electronic sound. It is being "passed off" as Native. To me it it is not Native. It sounded, well, sorry, but, it sounded tacky. I don't know if Mr. Gordon is First Nation. Some of it even seems to be somewhat African, which would be appropriate if it where meant to be African in nature. But, all in all, it's far to "Hollywood" for me. And we all know how "Hollywood" has mis-informed the world about our First Nation's history. But, I guess the bottom line for the producers of this type of CD is - this stuff sells.
The drum is the heartbeat of Mother Earth. Her heart is not heard with this rendition.

Album Description

After a dazzling start to his career, which has made him one of the world's best-known and most popular pianists, and a run of recordings of Mozart, Bach, Gershwin and Stravinsky which have made their mark on the classical catalogue, Fazýl Say now shows us another facet of his art: his own compositions. Anyone who has attended one of Fazýl Say's concerts has heard some of his own compositions played as encores, among them the now famous Black Earth for solo piano, based on a Turkish folksong, in which Fazýl, evoking the saz, a Turkish traditional instrument, simultaneously plays the keys and the strings inside the piano, producing an incredible sound. This Turkish pianist is also a passionate enthusiast for improvisation and jazz: `Art Tatum and Ravi Shankar are just as much of an inspiration to me as Bach or Beethoven,' he likes to say. These influences are obvious in this disc's stunning closing track, Dervish in Manhattan, recorded live at the 2000 Radio France & Montpelier Festival before an electrified audience. Contrasting traditional Sufi music and the modernity of "swing," Dervish in Manhattan dazzles with its constantly changing time signatures, rhythmic sequences, syncopations and offbeat accents.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT DRUMMING GALORE FROM GLENNIE........1999-10-01

Evelyn Glennie is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest percussionist alive today and this c.d is my favorite of her works. Most percussionist specialise in certain instruments but Glennie seems to be able to play most of them, on this album Glennie plays the drumkit, flowerpots, bongos, snare drum, shakers, cymbals, mbwata, woodblock, all kinds of shakers and small instruments and new percussion instruments, it's absolutely fabulous. The second track "Halasana" by Cauberghs is for a piano and a drumkit and it's a very interesting composition and the sound Glennie gets from the drums is so beautiful and she plays with such a good technique and dynamics, and you can say that about almost all the other pieces on this c.d, the only thing I dont like is Rzewski's To The Earth beause of the poetry reciting that goes along with the playing, to my ears it is just pretentious.

On the whole this is a great c.d with good compositions and improvisations and the playing could hardly be better. Higly recomended.

10,000 Maniacs without Natalie Merchant just doesn't seem viable. Yet the band has been rebuilt with violist-violinist Mary Ramsey signing on as a replacement. Meanwhile, they've continued to mine the delicate folk-rock they brought back to the public eye in the 1980s. Covers of Mimi Farina's "In the Quiet Morning" and Sandy Denny's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" are given the majestic treatment, while Ramsey's clear, clean diction gives even the poppier likes of "On and On" and "Beyond the Blue" an adult-contemporary feel. "Smallest Step" builds on a swell of Hammond organ and solid rhythms while incorporating Ramsey's strings and multilayered harmonies. Their audience may have changed following Merchant's departure, but 10,000 Maniacs are still be doing what they do best. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Cd sounds good. .......2007-04-11

CD sounds good. No skipping. Not bad for used CD. Only complaint is that the CD case came a little banged up.

5 out of 5 stars Unjustly Dismissed.......2006-06-11

This album seems to be getting dismissed simply because Natalie Merchant is no longer with the band. So what? Contrary to popular belief there is more to a band than it's lead singer. Merchant was a great vocalist, but she was not the band has her uneven solo career has demonstrated.

On its first spin or two this disc might seem a bit underwelming, but its many many charms are revealed with subsequent listens and it is difficult to imagine a Maniacs fan not getting lots of enjoyment out of songs such as "Ellen," "Once a City," and "Smallest Step" to name a few and there is a very nice cover of Sandy Denny's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes."

So if you have been a Maniacs fan why not give it a shot?

5 out of 5 stars Nat Is Gone. Get Over It........2005-11-20

Natalie Merchant is an exceptionally good singer and her voice gave 10,000 Maniacs a good front. But she was NOT the band. The band continued on just nicely in her absence and, artistically speaking anyway, thrived with this first rate set of songs while she went on to a woefully uneven solo career.

The naysayers fear change and can't deal with the fact that someone other than Natalie is the lead singer with the band as if there is no difference between the Maniacs with Natalie and Natalie's solo career. Anyone who listens to both with an open mind should be able to say something along the lines of what the kid said in the Emperor's New Clothes. With the exception of Merchant's wonderful "The House Carpenter's Daughter" album, the Maniacs are making better music without Natalie than Natalie has been making without the Maniacs.

5 out of 5 stars Life Goes On Nicely Sans Merchant.......2005-10-09

I've been a big fan over 10,000 Maniacs for over 20 years, yet one thing that has never ceased to amaze me are those people who seem to worship Natalie Merchant as if she and she alone *WAS* the band. Looking over some of the negative reviews for this solid album suggests that many of these people are here.

Merchant was undeniably a charismatic front woman for the band. Her wonderful vocals, her sharp song writing, and her energetic stage presence played a huge role in taking a band with such unseemingly likely commercial potential into a platinum selling act. During her tenure the band made three superb albums ("The Wishing Chair," "In My Tribe," and "Our Time in Eden") and she deserves much credit for them.

But just because she left t is no reason to dismiss the band as irrelevant. If anything Ms. Merchant's woefully uneven solo career has proved that the band too had a hand in its own success and had it not been for the fact that this album was on a small indie label the restrained promotional possibilities, this album would have been a much bigger hit than it was. It is certainly an improvement over the band's first post-Merchant album to pleasant, but safe "Love Among the Ruins."

Here we have songs that stand out -- "Glow," "Beyond the Blue," "Once a City," "Ellen" and a lovely cover of the old Fairport Convention/Sandy Denny (both a big influence on the bad since the early days) number "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" are just a few of them and all are sung by Mary Ramsey who vocally can easily go toe to toe with Merchant. Anyone who takes a little time and has a little bit of an opened mind will find that the band did not fall by the wayside with the departure of Merchant.

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth Hearing.......2005-09-25

Looking over some of these reviews a lot of people seem to want to set things up as a 10KM vs. Natalie Merchant thing. What's the point? Both can and should be judged on their own merits.

With that in mind "The Earth Pressed Flat" is a lovely, lovely piece of work that can stand nicely alongside the rest of the 10KM catalog. If this were this another band most of the negative reviews here would be highly praising it.

Album Description

Drums on Fire is a collaboration between two master drummers from two corners of the world--British James Asher and Indian Sivamani. Asher's driving percussion, Sivamani's ecstatic rhythms, and occasional melodic flutes, saxes and guitars create an album with both pulse and heart. Features dozens of rhythm-producing instruments that range from djembe, bazouki and taiko to buckets, birdcalls and Sivamani's own chant-scat.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great melodic beats - pulsing drums.......2004-08-09

If drum beats can be melodic - this album shows that.
Two great gurus of the drums Sivamani - with his ecstatic beats, vedic chantics to add a mood to the music, crazy one-offs with the other great guru James Asher who with his own pulsing beats creates a superb album.

And inspite of a whole album of drum beats - it doesnt bore you in the least. The mood changes totally across the album to revive and keep up the interest in listening intently and marvel at the fluidity of the pair.

There are occasional melodic tunes too - with flutes and other instruments. But best of all is Sivamani's rapid fire chants and his vocal beats that he syncronises with the actual drums.

If you want more of such ecstatic intrumentation and percussion in particular - should check out "Blazing Drums" which has some more masters in it like Trilok Gurtu, Kale Karsh etc.

It's ironic that Samite's music is an express train to peacefulness, given that so much of his inspiration is drawn from the suffering and separation associated with his being a Ugandan refugee who grew up during Idi Amin's reign. In fact, Samite's brother was killed during that country's struggles. Samite only returned there a few years ago, and much of the music on Kambu Angels is drawn from that experience. It's this undertow of pain that lends even Samite's sweetest, most childlike songs an emotional depth. Singing in his native Lugandan tongue, Samite's songs are like lullabies. He layers his voice into gentle choirs and hymnlike rounds on "Tokido" and "Zenina." He does the same thing with the electric kalimba and percussion with which he accompanies himself, making a hypnotic African minimalism. His instrumentals are equally captivating. The title track is a trancelike piece with cycling kalimba and wood flute blown across the top like an African breeze. --John Diliberto

Album Description

Samite's early instruction from his Grandfather on the traditional flute instilled in him a great love and talent for the music of his people, the Baganda. Away from his native Uganda, Samite repeatedly turns to music, the sounds of his culture, for a sense of home.

Today, Samite looks to children, to their smiles and to the joy that endures despite their suffering all over the world. Children hold our hope for the future, they need a safe and gentle place where they can grow, sing and dance. "Kambu Angels" is a shimmering tribute to a group of young orphaned boys in West Africa being raised in such a place. Like these boys, children everywhere deserve a chance to be a part of creating a more peaceful world.

Samite's music today includes other native instrments including the kalimba (finger piano) and his own voice. It is Samite's voice that drives this album, and draws you in. You might find yourself humming his tunes before long!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sensitive Reflection of Horrific Acts Against Children.......2007-05-13

Samite's voice is clear, mellow, and filled with compassion. His work with trauma vicitms in Uganda is voiced to lullabys of African rhythm. The music draws your attention to the words, so ironic in violence compared to the gentleness of the melodies. This is not easy listening music. It is poignant and bittersweet.

4 out of 5 stars His hopes for world peace and prosperity shine through.......2004-08-30

Samite is one of the few African artists occasionally listed under 'new age' in cd stores, yet few new age music haters can resist his music: yes, it's gentle - but it moves.
Samite started out as a traditional flute player in Uganda, studied classical Western flute, and added kalimba (aka Mbira) to his arsenal of instruments.

5 out of 5 stars big samite fan.......2003-12-30

I own all of Samite's CD's and each one of them is worth owning. I've been to his concerts and talked with him afterwards - he is a truly talented and inspirational individual. Kambu Angels is a back to basics approach following "Stars to Shine". It seems to me that Samite was going back to his roots as a child in Ugunda to create music which invokes the feel of his homeland in a very simple and unadorned way. The overall effect is simply beautiful. I can't wait until the warm weather arrives so that I can put it on and enjoy a pleasant summer evening with Kambu Angels on the stereo. Peace, inner calm and serenity are what you will feel if you buy this outstanding album. I realize this might sound like some lame new age cliche, but Samite has a gift to actually evoke these feelings in a true and profound way. So do yourself a favor and buy his music, see him perform, and sit down and talk with him. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Samite is superb.......2003-08-13

Kambu Angels is a wonderful combination of mellow treats, sexy rhythms and sweet inspiration. Samite's artistry on this album illuminates a complicated yet gentle, full-of-life Africa; he makes it more than apparent that there are great people on that continent, and he pays tribute. His music is upbeat, soulful, insightful; and often it just provokes you to get up and DANCE DANCE DANCE to the joy of life. This is definitely one of my favorite albums of all time.

3 out of 5 stars African pop fails to involve listener.......2002-12-01

Reading about Samite's survival of Idi Amin's regime and the explanation for each track, I wanted to like this CD more. It's African pop that is not bad but not involving either.

      Product Description

The Burnt Earth Ensemble is a band that plays instruments made from clay! Armed with haunting flutes, growling didjeridus, raucous fiddles and thundering drums, the Burnt Earth Ensemble coaxes tantalizing music from the material of the Earth herself. The group's music is uniquely original, with Celtic, African, Middle-Eastern and jazz influences.
