Album Description

As we explore the depths of our "self", our "souls", through massage, relaxation, and other healing modalities, we gain experience and knowingness. The music from Detaching The World Vol. 1 is a transient, which allows for this knowingness to occur in a peaceful, tranquil, and comforting environment.

This CD has been created to provide over 60 minutes in running time without the use of vocals or percussion. Emil Gagliardi has introduced a new style of guitar called "The Nuit's Effect" named after its rich soothing textures and deep earthy tones. From the opening cut of "Tranquil Sunrise", Gagliardi's swirling guitar immediately sets the perfect mood for massage and relaxation. The density of "The Valley Beyond" swallows you up in a tapestry of color similar to a warm blanket while the hauntingly beautiful "Fallen Angel" resembles a fresh new day after a storm.

Gagliardi's vision of creating the perfect massage and relaxation music sets Detaching The World (Vol. 1) apart from all others. Its purpose is to serve gentleness and ease like the inhalation and exhalation of the breath.

I purchased this CD based on the reviews alone,In comparison to other meditation Cd's I own; this CD ranks far below. The music is in my opinion anything but relaxing. Not suitable for meditation.

5 out of 5 stars Promising Debut by Ambient Guitarist Emil Gagliardi.......2007-05-23

Although guitarist Emil Gagliardi's debut CD was designed for massage, meditation, and relaxation, it is much more than that. The ambient release features soothing, New Age-style synthesizer sounds generated entirely by Emil's electric guitar. The result is not only a great therapeutic tool, but also a legitimate work of sonic art in the vein of Andy Summers' classic ambient guitar album, Mysterious Barricades. Emil Gagliardi is a guitarist to keep an eye out for. [...]

I have other "relaxing" CDs that really don't do the job. This one does. I actually bought it to listen to while I had some dental work done and it was very helpful!

One of the most calming and inspiring cd's I've heard in a long time! I've always felt connected to the sounds of the guitar..now I can have the best of both worlds...guitar and meditation!

DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. An entrancing set. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars A Man and His Art - Magnificently Captured.......2007-04-06

This 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.

There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.

Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.

EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT ANDRES SEGOVIA WAS/IS THE WORLD'S GREATEST CLASSICAL GUITAR PLAYER. THIS CD IS A COMPILATION OF HIS RECORDINGS FROM THE THE EARLY 50'S TO THE LATE 60'S. HIS GUITAR MASTERY IS UNQUESTIONED AND HE IS AN INSPIRATION. I WISH I COULD PLAY GUITAR LIKE ANDRES SEGOVIA (BUT I CAN'T AND I NEVER WILL!).

4 out of 5 stars "The weight" is over, pick this up and enjoy Duane's magic!.......2007-06-17

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

It has been a unanimous vote that the legion of Duane fans prefer the first Anthology. That said in no way does it desecrate the wide range of Duane's talents showcased on Volume 2.

Duane's brilliance can be appreciated even more once you get through a listen to both Anthologies. Many terrific players are locked into one style of playing and it becomes their calling card. The skill displayed by Duane is well noted but we never want to overlook how his talent went in so many directions. He could play the blues, country, folk, and rock but never did a solo or a rhythmic pattern feel inferior in one of those categories.

Duane's presence in a recording studio was good enough to push his fellow musicians into higher expectations. Listen closely to "Dirty Old Man." Lulu had a solid career in the U.K. (1960's) with her combination pop and rhythm and blues vocals. "Dirty Old Man" has her singing the blues and Duane providing the backing for her to confidently explore new territory.

"Matchbox" sounds wonderful with Ronnie Hawkins and Duane's excellent rendition.

"Walk On Gilded Splinters" from Johnny Jenkins is another highlight. Duane's guitar sounds as if it playing only for you. The entire 5:15 is captivating!

When the Duck & The Bear track "Goin' Up The Country" (It is the same song you all know and love from Al Wilson- Canned Heat) first resonates from the speakers you'll feel as you have been lassoed between the tweeters and woofers!

Even if the new math says "1 is greater than 2", two is pretty special!

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Not as good as volume #1 but still amazing guitar playing and a great collaboration of other amazing musicians.

4 out of 5 stars Duane is a rock god.......2007-01-12

this one is not as good as the first volume but it still has good ole Duane Allman feel to it

4 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL COMPANION TO VOL. 1, BUT NOT EQUAL TO IT.........2006-08-23

This volume doesn't reach the heights that the first one does, but it includes some very strong selections. Actually, I'm surprised that both volumes didn't have more songs from the historic "Layla" sessions. Gregg Allman once said that it was Duane's favorite recording session. "Born to be Wild" doesn't feature any significant guitar (Wilson Pickett shines here) and could have been left off in favor of one of the blistering lead guitar duels between Duane and Eric Clapton. The two songs from Duane's own aborted solo album sound great, and are a lot of fun. This volume digs deeper into the session work, and, of course, there is plenty of outstanding acoustic and electric slide guitar on this volume as well, served up the way only Duane could do it.
Definitely Recommended as a companion to Volume 1.

5 out of 5 stars As good as I remember it.......2006-07-04

I had this on vinyl, and really, really liked it. The album disappeared somewhere, and I was glad to find this. Duane Allman had an uncanny knack of being able to sing in many different styles, with many different people, and do them all well.

This second album in Dancing Cat Records' Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters Series produced by George Winston follows its successful Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters. Again the masters of the genre are featured in several well-known tunes such as Lili'uokalani's "Aloha 'Oe" (played here by George Kahumoku) and "'Ulili E" (Dennis and David Kamakahi), as well as modern originals and two tracks that had not been available on CD before: "Ulu Niu Ke'eke'e" (George Kahumoku and Kekuhi Kanahele) and "Slack Key Serenade" (Leonard Kwan and Ozzie Kotani). The liner notes provide complete information on each song's original album.

A balance of instrumental and vocal tracks, the compilation is a terrific starting point for exploring the artistic and stylistic diversity in modern slack key. Instruments on this album include everything from traditional mouth bow, 'ukulele, and percussion stones to 12-string slack key and modern acoustic guitars. Elder statesman Ray Kane lullabies us with his simple instrumental "Popoki Slack Key" (popoki means "little cat"); renowned improviser Cyril Pahinui and Sol Hoopii-influenced Bob Brozman combine 12-string slack key and acoustic steel guitar interpreting "Hilo E" and "Lili'u E" in a style evocative of the 1920s. Showing off how slack key works solo, in duets, or with mixed accompaniment, this is one of the most beautiful slack key compilations out there. --Erik Macki

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-02-24

Bought a copy for a trip to Kauai. Listened to it while I was there and now all we have to do is slip the disc on to be transported back to the islands (at least if we keep our eyes closed and try real hard to imagine).

The music is sublime.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious!.......2007-01-09

I am hooked on this music and could play this CD day and night.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2006-06-01

This cd would be worth buying even if it only had one song on it - the version of "Pu'u Anahulu" with Martin Pahinui on vocals. I get chicken skin just listening to this song and how much he sounds like his father! Of course I love Gabby's version but always wondered what it would sound like without the cheesy strings; this is it. Unlike one other reviewer, I love the vocals.

5 out of 5 stars 2006 GRAMMY WINNER!!!.......2006-02-25

This album won a Grammy in February 2006! And diservedly so...

Slack key has come into it's own, many prominent guitar players are following these talented Hawaiians around, learning their new tricks and their old traditional ways. (In song sample #8 of "Masters II", Amazon spelled Cyril Pahinui's name with a "g", come on, let's give the Hawaiian artists the respect they deserve.)

This is NOT a sequel to Slack Key MastersI, but a beautiful extension and addition. The voices as well as the strings are sublime, just right in fact.

All I can say is, MORE! MORE! MORE!

2 out of 5 stars Please, more slack key without vocals!!!.......2005-11-22

That's my call to record execs, or George Winston, or whoever, if they ever read these. I bought volume one, absolutely thrilled that finally, after 40 years of searching, I'd finally found slack key without singing. I don't hate the vocals, and the vocals on this CD are less annoying than a whole lot of the vocals I've heard in Hawaiian music (yes, I grew up there, and have gone back every year for the last 30 years, and I've heard a whole lot of Hawaiian music that I didn't exactly ask for.) I love finger-picked ukulele (NOT strummed), and I love the cheesy steel guitar, but if I never hear another vocal, it'll be too soon. So anyway: is everyone who ever published Hawaiian music confident that people like and expect vocals? I see other reviews here that could do without the vocals. I hereby swear that if Dancing Cat (or anybody) ever does another collection anywhere near as good as Vol. 1, without vocals, I will instantly buy it at a premium price. I promise!

Album Description

In the second installment of the series, Connecting The Universe Music has released a new relaxing journey with Detaching The World Vol. 2 - Ambient music for massage/relaxation/meditation. Through exploration of the unconscious, this music was designed as an offering by the artist to bring about complete relaxation to the listener. It allows for the unknown self to awaken and remember with comfort and ease.

Musician and creator Emil Gagliardi brings to us nine new tracks with Vol. 2. This CD provides over 63 minutes in running time without the use of vocals or percussion. As the opening track "Peaceful Country" begins, Gagliardi's unique and inimitable style of ambient guitar immediately sets the tone for a tranquil relaxing atmosphere. On "Mirror", you feel yourself sinking deeper into the gentle hands of what the artist calls "The Nuit's Effect" while "The Fellowship" and "The Fellowship Reprise" are a meditation of three soothingly calm guitars journeying to the mystical unknown. "Hawaiian Compressions" is a three piece composition symbolizing the warming atmosphere of the sun while gently slipping into the earthy picturesque tones of "Healing Within". The last track, "Pulse", is the capture of a meditation right outside the artist's home where the ocean, mountains, and sky share one relaxed and rejuvenated heartbeat.

Emil Gagliardi continues to provide seekers of total relaxation with his unique and one of a kind style of music. As heard in the bestselling Detaching The World Vol. 1, his devotion to creating serene music for the healing arts goes unsurpassed by his peers. His music bestows upon the listener gentleness and ease like the inhalation and exhalation of the breath.

Emil Gagliardi shows what he's made of in this spectacular follow-up. Laying down atmospheric riffs and hypnotic patterns against a backdrop of lush guitar-generated textures, Gagliardi creates canyons of sound that seem to come from the heavens and reverberate across a vast stretch of land beneath a starry expanse of sky. Combining the guitar stylings of Andy Summers, Robert Fripp, Allan Holdsworth, and even George Harrison, Gagliardi forges a unique and unparalleled style all his own. [...]

5 out of 5 stars serene ambient guitar to help aid a stressful mind.......2004-10-27

Lately I've been submerging myself in yoga, morning meditation, T'ai Chi, and massage therapy to help my mind, body and spirit cope with the loss of a loved one. My sister (who raves about this artist) gave me this cd on my birthday in hopes that it would aid through the grieving process and help me relax.

Soon after my birthday, I finally had an afternoon to do nothing but try and unwind. I took my portable cd player outside with this cd and lied in my hammock. A few minutes after hitting play, I closed my eyes and had the most intense visualizations. It was as if each note from this music embraced my soul and projected a movie of warmth and comfort in my eyelids.

A few hours went by as I lay in my hammock listening to this cd repeat over and over. The calming effects of this music, combined with the hammock, had relaxed me beyond words. It was as if the stress detached my world (no pun intended).

As I look through the liner notes, I notice that this entire cd was created with guitars. Never in my life have I heard guitar sound so angelic and peaceful. All of this cd is great, yet the piece of music that comforts my heart the most is Pulse. Pulse has a calm heartbeat sound with this airy guitar melody that dances gently through the notes. Absoulutly beautiful!

I am bringing this cd to my next massage appointment in hopes that my therapist too will feel the heavenly ambiance that this music provides.

5 out of 5 stars My client's favorite pick for bodywork!.......2004-06-06

Just got volume 2. Delicious! What an encore. Nicely divergent from Volume 1. It seems to be more 'grounded' than the prior work but still retaining the flavors of space. You can tell this artist respects the delicate atmosphere needed for massage. This cd is successful with a client who is beyond picky with his musical choices during our sessions. Muchas gracias!

5 out of 5 stars the most creative musical journey.......2003-12-15

Having had so many incredible experiences listening and working with Detaching The World Vol. 1, I purchased Vol. 2 without hesitation. Although different from the first CD, the musicians style of meditative guitar transforms me and resonates with me similiar to Vol. 1. It seems as if the music puts me in a trance sending me to another place - a place where everything is calm and nothing can go wrong. My thoughts disappear and I capture the importance of being in every moment. This CD is mellow enough for deep relaxation yet also great music to play in the car on a long roadtrip. Either way it is definitely a journey that everyone should experience. I also find it important to listen from beginning to end without stopping - each track almost leads you to the next. It's as if a story is formed in track 1 that sends you wanting to know more in track 2. This continues until the "grand finale" which is a "heartbeat"-like song - sending you immediataly inward on your own journey. This is a beautiful CD.

5 out of 5 stars SHAYLE HARRIS.......2003-12-29

I REALLY LIKED THE MUSIC BUT THERE IS ONE SONG I WANTED TO LISTEN TO BUT I COULDNT WHITCH WAS ROCKY BY AUSTIN ROBERTS,AS I WANTED TO KNOW IF IT WAS THE SAME SONG I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR,FOR AGES. THANK YOU SHAYLE

4 out of 5 stars Nice blend.......2003-08-13

How tacky are some of these songs? Well, I can remember hearing these songs being played at SEARS while shopping for clothes (no choice in those days. I lived in the suburbs and didn't yet have a car). The direct memories of denim jackets with sequins, and shorty tops - with sequins, fill me with shivers both warm (memories) and cold (fashion hell), as I listen to these songs. But not all of 'em are tacky. There are a couple of juicy goodies that actually broke the ground of riskless AM radio. "You Sexy Thing" was a hot crossover tune that got white people dancing (one could even say it was one of the first preludes to disco), and that title garnished many a sequined shorty top. Even many a pair of ..... (the seventies were SO fabulously sleazy!). And "Eighteen With A Bullet", despite it's slight '50sish Frankie Lymon feel, had a tight euphoric bite to it, which was a fresh charge in let's face it, what was a pretty stale, generic musical wasteland by the mid-seventies. Even Bay City Roller-mania was a delightful change, despite the fact that their fans all looked like Catholic school rejects (I guess that's where they got all that plaid). Come to think of it, maybe sequined shorty tops weren't so bad after all! Have fun -
and don't forget to have a nice day! :)

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs and Great Memories!.......2002-01-15

Oh great songs and great memories when I was only in elementary school and listening to these hits on the old KJR AM in Seattle! Great collections from Rhino!

3 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Rhino!.......2001-08-13

As a fan of Rhino Records for many years I was elated when they started this series years ago. This was the 70s collection with songs that you couldn't find on any other compilation - the quirky ones that you remember hearing on AM radio, had the 45 but wasn't on the "most popular" list. For example: Sky High by Jigsaw (which I remember hearing in 1975) and Convoy by C. W. McCall (which I had the 45 rpm of). This isn't my favorite volume of the series but nonetheless, a volume that should be in your collection.

Please note! The cassette versions are different from the CD release. There are "Bonus Tracks" on the CD that are not found on the cassette.

Adagio follows in the rosin-dusted footsteps of The Impressionists, A Different Mozart, and A Different Prelude. As with those releases, it was produced by Dawn Atkinson and features many of the same artists. The results are as varied as the musicians. Violinist Tracy Silverman cuts one of his patented echo-delayed pizzicato violin arrangements of a Bach arioso, while Patrick O'Hearn drapes a somber keyboard shroud around the Adagio from Rodrigo's Fantasy for a Gentleman. Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning find the Celtic air in the Adagio from Handel's Sonata in G, while Philip Aaberg discovers infinity between the notes of Barber's ubiquitous Adagio for Strings. He stretches the melody across his piano in finely drawn lines, subtlety filled out with synthesizer undertones. Subtlety is a casualty on Philipe Saisse's bongos, bells, and synth arrangement of Bach's Air on a G String. It's also sacrificed in a corny confection of Handel's Sarabande by Paul Schwartz. His ham-fisted electronic keyboards would've sounded dated even before Switched-On Bach. But Adagio features plenty of musicians who are willing to surrender themselves to their elegiac themes, including guitarist Steve Erquiaga, Mike Marshall, and Edgar Meyers. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Simply Gorgeous !.......2003-10-05

This is the first Windham Hill compilation I've purchased in a long, long time, and I am thrilled with the music.
The artistry is stunning, the artists bring themselves to the music while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the original piece.
My favorite is Grieg's Nocturne, arranged and performed by Steve Erquiaga. I have been in love with his music from the moment
I heard his CD "Cafe Paradiso" (Imaginary road Records). It is absolutely stunning!
When I saw that he was on "Adagio" I went for it. I'm so happy that I did ...
Other hightlights for me are Philip Aaberg's "Adagio for Strings", Tracy Silverman's "Arioso" ..... they're all beautiful.
Thank You for this wonderful music.

Ween have never been accused of taking themselves too seriously. Music, on the other hand, is serious business indeed for the New Hope, Pennsylvania duo. As their career stretches into its second decade, they have a rabidly devoted fan base, no more ties to a major label, and a body of work that marks the most significant contribution to psychedelic music of the last ten years. In part this is because they don't hew to a limited definition of "psychedelic," making music that is trippy without being hippy. Over nine albums they've explored a music store's worth of genres with accomplished song craft and instrumentation, which can include anything from a drum machine to Elvis Presley's backup singers. In Shinola Vol. 1, a collection of songs left off other albums, the "brownest" strains of Ween's oeuvre are on proud display. "Brown" is the code word Ween uses to describe music that's warbly, pitch-shifted, and plain strange. The stompy, squirty opener "Tastes Good on the Bun" falls into this camp, as does the astral travelogue "The Rift." Elsewhere Ween's gleeful, Saturday morning cartoon side surfaces in "Boys Club," begging the question of when exactly they'll join Danny Elfman and Mark Mothersbaugh in writing music for movies (their occasional gigs for Nickelodeon and their disastrous collaboration with Pizza Hut notwithstanding). Their reverence of Prince is felt in "Monique the Freak," which contains what have to be the dumbest lyrics in the Ween canon. And "Gabrielle" could make it past even the most vigilant customs agent as a rare Thin Lizzy track. For a collection of odds-and-sods, Shinola Vol. 1 stands up remarkably well with other albums like The Mollusk and Quebec. Bring on Vol. 2. Hail Boognish. --Ryan Boudinot

5 out of 5 stars Land of the misfit toys.......2007-07-16

Outtakes? Leftovers? Not quite.

This record has a lot of great songs; well-produced, well-written tracks from the brothers Ween. As far as I can tell, the only reason why they weren't included in other albums would be that none of them seem like they would `fit' in the context of anything previously released. Solid songs from start to finish. They're the kind of songs that Ween has always been great at-- Infectious, creative, reminiscent of something you may have heard before, but can't remember where or when.

4 out of 5 stars Good album, worth getting, esp for ween fans.......2007-03-25

I really like this album. Some songs I love. I Feel in Love Today is downright great. Gabrielle is pure Thin Lizzy, almost bettering it. Monique has some sweet guitar play and overall funk. Tastes good on the Bun rules too (totally Pod era). There is no bad song on this album, although I usually might skip some (Isreal, etc). Worth getting most definetly, but maybe not better than WP or Quebec.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but no classic.......2007-03-04

I'll rock out to any Ween all day long, but if the point of these reviews is to help uninformed listeners decide whether to purchase an album or not, then here's the deal: This is a fun album, and if you like Ween you'll dig this, but there's a reason some of these cuts weren't included on albums. There's no doubt some of these tunes should have been previously released. But it's a little absurd for all these people to give this album the coveted "5" stars. If this a 5 star album, what is the Mollusk or Chocolate and Cheese, 'cause this album ain't either of those.
Reviewing music is silly anyway, 'cause one man's trash is another man's all-time favorite album, but I don't think potential listeners should be viewing this as a 5 star album.

5 out of 5 stars Prequel to next albumn?.......2007-02-02

Hello World,
Third genny Ween. White p, queb, shinola1...

5 out of 5 stars Wang Doodle Ween.......2006-12-18

Ten hours after turning forty-three I put this record on downstairs and by the time I Fell in Love Today was about half over I was up next to the Christmas tree, more or less swaying. Isn't that dang song one of the greatest things you ever heard in a whole lifetime of birthdays? The unmistakable Abbey Road vibe, the rock solid lyrics sung with just the right amount of fark you, the organ or whatever it is that slinks in near the end--that's desert island material right there, straight up. Later, while out on my bicycle I caught myself singing track four aloud and had to slow down and laugh because really this record is just too bleeding good. Wock on Ween, volume two please anytime youse guys are ready.

4 out of 5 stars Big Noise from Waimea and Beyond.......2007-06-29

I bought these CD second, even though it was the first one released. Again I really enjoyed it as well, some great stuff here. Here you'll find Jim Messina(pre-Loggins & Messina)with his group the Jesters. Also a couple of great songs by a group called the Chandelles(El Gato & the Jetster) It pays to read the liner notes, you really get some great info into the time period and what was going on with theses groups. Also, a couple of songs from the hard to find "Original Surfaris" first Surf album. And the story behind them and the more well known So. Cal group we're all familiar with that released "Wipe Out", "Surfer Joe", etc..If you love the California West Coast sound, start collecting these CD's. It will help you fill in the musical gaps.

Worth the purchase....great tunes!

5 out of 5 stars great compilation of lesser known surf music.......2004-08-25

.........my title says it all. Great stuff here by some of the lesser knowns. But great nevertheless. If you like surf music, get this. I probably have over 70 CD's of surf music and this is one of the best. 'Nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars 60's surf trip!.......2004-04-11

This is excellent collection of songs. The songs are very lively and entertaining. The most stunning thing about this CD is the reproduction quality. A lot of the songs sound like like they were just recently recorded, the audio is that good. You can hear the big influence Dick Dale had with other musicians on this CD. Their second CD "lost legends of surf guitar 2" has less surf oriented tunes with more hot rod songs, it makes me wonder if I should bother buying the third CD of this collection. The pyramids had one of the top surf tunes in "penetration" but the two pyramid tunes on here just sound like copies of that tune with the same minor sounding desending riff. This is an exciting collection of songs for all surf music fans. I also recommend their second CD even though it has hot-rod tunes.

4 out of 5 stars "In The Summertime" and all seasons its a Nice Day! .......2007-07-03

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Are you ready for Volume 3? "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)" - (Melanie) is the proper opening track. A tremendous vocal by Melanie and maybe her best gets the party started.

"Tighter, Tighter" - (Alive & Kicking) is everything you wanted in a short rock and roll tune. Great energy and a true 1970's classic!

"Green-Eyed Lady" - (Sugarloaf) One of the tunes that stood the test of time both as a Top 40 hit and often as the main course on the classic rockers! The keyboards will hook you immediately.

"Indiana Wants Me" - (R. Dean Taylor) If you listen to this song one time or twenty-seven, you always feel as if you are experiencing the character's run from the law as it happens. Tremendous imagery through the well constructed lyrics.

Only pitfall is the total playing time of the disc!

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

I bought this CD for Alive And Kicking's Song "Tighter, Tighter"
The other songs on this CD are good, Lots of great songs but Tighter, Tighter is the BOMB, If you buy this CD for just this song, it is money well spent!

3 out of 5 stars Have A Nice Day; Not As Good As Volumes 1 & 2 But Good !.......2005-09-15

Although this Volume 3 of the Have A Nice Day series isn't as strong from start to finish as Volume's 1 & 2 it does have it's share of outstanding Gems. Two of them are, Lay Down (Candles In The Rain), sung by Melanie; With The Edwin Hawkins Singers and, Green Eyed Lady, by Sugarloaf. The Partridge Family's, I Think I Love You, was # 1 in November 1970 and it is also here. The Legendary Jerry Reed's, Amos Moses, reached the Top 10 In March 1971 and Brian Hyland had a # 3 smash in December 1970 with, Gypsy Woman, and both of them are also here but THE highlight of this Volume 3 compilation is Alive & Kicking's, Tighter Tighter. This song was a Top 10 Hit In August 1970 and should have went to # 1 but didn't. Along with, Gypsy Woman, it is definitely my favorite on this Disc!
These twelve songs peaked between July 1970 and August 1971. Volume 3 is definitely a worthwhile purchase. I mean afterall.....Back in the 70s I owned most of these twelve songs either on Vinyl or Tape and they have never sounded better than they do on this CD. Isn't technology amazing! 3.5 Stars
Final Note: I own both the cassette and the CD of this Volume 3 and the CD has twelve tunes while the cassette only has ten. The two extra tracks on the CD are Bobby Sherman's Top 10 Hit, Julie; Do Ya Love Me, and Punch's, Fallin Lady. Both are good tunes.

3 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Some of the Biggest Hits of 1970.......2004-02-20

That Rhino Records has kept this series in print proves that there's is still a market for these songs. And while I have at least twenty of these titles in my collection, the current crop of pay-per-download websites gives the consumer total control over song selection, making these kinds of collections more and more obsolete when you consider that you're still paying a dollar per song either way.

Like the previous volumes, it's a mixed bag of mostly MOR pop hits from one- and two-hit wonders. In fact, only three of these artists had any kind of extended musical career. Unlike Rhino's Sixties-oriented TOP ROCK 'N' ROLL series, which included many artists with multiple hits, the HAVE A NICE DAY series does not include major acts of the period like Rod Stewart, Three Dog Night or the Carpenters. These are --in many cases--songs that are infrequently anthologized, giving you a broader look at the early Seventies. [Each of these songs, by the way, were released in 1970.]

In addition, most of these were Top 10 hits (although "Fallin' Lady" didn't even dent the Top 40), and half of them were million sellers like the gospel-influenced "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)," the quirky "In the Summertime," Bryan Hyland's lone Seventies smash "Gypsy Woman," the Partridge Family's signature song "I Think I Love You," the countrified funk of Jerry Reed's novelty "Amos Moses" and Bobby Sherman's schmaltzy "Julie, Do Ya Love Me." These are all original hit versions and the sound quality is empeccable. It's just a matter of how badly you want each of these songs.

4 out of 5 stars Good mix of '70s pop sounds.......2000-06-29

Volume III of the Superhits Series provides a solid musical sampling of the kaleidoscope of sounds and influences that made up early 70s pop. From the bubblegummy "I Think I Love You" to the borderline hard "Green-Eyed Lady", this disc has it all.

There is Melanie's Joplin-esque "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)", a truly marvelous song, and R. Dean Taylor's hard-to-find, country-influenced "Indiana Wants Me." Jerry Reed's "Amos Moses" has an even stronger country flavor and Bobby Bloom's "Montego Bay" features a gentle hint of calypso sound.

Although not expensive, it is hard to classify this disc as a top value. Like all of the offerings in the series, Volume III contains only twelve tracks, and the last two are virtual throw aways. However, considering the investment of time that would be required to locate all of these relatively obscure tunes, this is still quite a bargain.
