Truly a classic..........2006-08-09
This album is an impeccable punk classic - and I don't bandy 'impeccable' about lightly. The second you hear the opening bars of "Chelsea", you'll know you're in posession of something special.
You own "Damned Damned Damned"? Excellent. Every Gand of Four recording? Marvelous. You don't own this? Your collection is pathetic. Buy this, cherish it - and tell everyone you have it, much like a badge of honour.
Great, original music!.......2005-11-16
Starts off with a song called, "Chelsea" . . . which is one of the best starting songs on an album, I have ever heard. From the start to the last song "Fear in the Night", this band has an original, refreshing sound.
Stiffs, Inc. sounds as if you threw some old 77 Punk Rock in a Blender with some old Vaudvillan music, put a dash of cryptic lyrics with some obscure references and you would have this album.
They also have an original look to them. They look like they all wear thrift store-20's and 30's clothes.
Very interesting. Very original. Highly recommended!

A justly famous first-generation "Der Rosenkavalier"........2003-01-20
By 1933 it was becoming clear that this most delectable and brilliantly scripted opera was likely to retain a permanent place in the international repertory. EMI's leading producer, Fred Gaisberg, had attended performances in London and Vienna given by a notable cast of singers usually conducted by Bruno Walter, and he commenced planning for a Vienna recording. As with most opera recording projects, however, there needed to be compromises. Firstly, the opera was too lengthy to record and issue on 78s. Secondly, the idea of having Strauss himself conduct it had to be abandoned because he demanded too high a fee. Lehmann's recording contracts allowed her to be included, but neither Bruno Walter as conductor nor Delia Reinhardt as the preferred Octavian could be engaged. Ultimately the project went ahead and an abridged version of the opera, reduced to about half its total duration, was recorded and released on thirteen 78s.
In 1951, on BBC radio, I heard Elisabeth Schumann play the recording of the final duet in this opera. She introduced it as follows: "I must let you into a little secret concerning this record. When we were making these records in Vienna Lotte Lehmann forgot two notes she had to sing. You may recall that just before the final duet Sophie's father remarks to the Marschallin how amazing young people are and the Marschallin replies, 'Ja, ja'. With the trio over, Lotte Lehmann thought her part in the recording was over and retired to her country house near Vienna. There were too many complications involved in getting Miss Lehmann back and so I sang the two words 'Ja, ja'. You must admit I did it very well." Subsequent research has revealed that the final duet was in fact the first item of the project to be recorded, on the first morning of the schedule, and that Lotte Lehmann had not yet arrived. Nevertheless Schumann did substitute for her great friend and colleague and the "take" was approved immediately.
Seventy years later, this splendid Mark Obert-Thorn reissue allows this recording to be heard with greater ease and clarity than ever before. Even so, listeners must bear in mind that recording techniques of the 1930s were barely adequate for capturing the richness of the orchestral score or the intricate vocal textures of the many trios and duets. Singing styles, moreover, differ from today's: both Richard Mayr and Elisabeth Schumann lay the portamento on very thickly. It is, nevertheless, a justly famous cast and one that became closely associated with the opera almost (but not quite) from the time of its 1911 premiere.
Lehmann's Marschallin meets all the requirements of the part. Womanly, wise, accepting of disappointment and generous in her nobility, this Marschallin commands attention throughout. Having exactly the kind of silvery voice and enchanting personality that match the role of Sophie, Elisabeth Schumann makes Sophie a more dominant character than is often the case. How well she depicts girlishness after acknowledging the presentation of the silver rose ("I am looking forward to being married? Are you looking forward too?", and how well she ticks off Baron Ochs in the final act ( "I've done and finished with you")! Happily, almost all Sophie's music was retained in this abridged recording. Maria Olszewska's Octavian is perhaps more impressive for purely vocal richness than for character insights. Richard Mayr, Viennese born and bred, created the part of Baron Ochs at the opera's Vienna premiere in 1911 and remained its most celebrated exponent until the time of his death not long after this recording was made. Much of his part of the opera is omitted in this recording but enough remains to show his fluency in the Viennese accent and some highly musical clowning.
Both Lehmann and Mayr are represented in individual extracts from this opera, which Naxos provide as an appendix to this recording.

Not far-out...just slightly bent.......2001-08-14
Nix's sound is absolutely straightahead--a clean jazz guitar tone without any fuzz or rock influence. His approach is entirely tonal, but within the outlines defined by Coleman's concept of "harmolodics"--Nix's effort to explain this famously nebulous concept in the liner notes isn't much more comprehensible than Coleman's own, but its main point is clear enough: "All players are simultaneously soloists, as well as accompanists. The idea is to create spontaneous music that is compositional, as well as orchestral in scope." That last phrase throws me (orchestral??) but the rest describes quite well the feel of the music: the music isn't a cyclic expression of an underlying chord structure, but relies on a continuously evolving polyphony which means that each improvisation is, so to speak, spontaneously through-composed. The music delicately & almost seamlessly negotiates between the options offered by conventional jazz, modal jazz & free playing.
This is to make heavy weather of a very approachable recording. The playing touches on all the conventional genres of mainstream guitar jazz--the blues, bop, the ballad, even the standard "Just Friends"--& leaves everything sounding fresh & unhackneyed. The great Fred Hopkins is an essential part of the music--listen to his swinging bass on the mordant, funky "Let's Don't" (Nix in the liner notes comments that it's "my postmodern reply to Cole Porter's 'Let's Do It' in this age of latex"). The fine drummer Newman Baker gets a well-deserved feature on "Acuity". The disc ends fittingly on the two most "out" numbers, "Driving Sideways Backwards" & "Boundaries": by this time the listener's ears have been entirely drawn into Nix's logical but unpredictable sound-world.
A little classic of the 1990s, & an album that should be picked up by anyone interested in free jazz on guitar. The disc makes for an interesting juxtaposition with the recordings of two other guitarists who've tackled Coleman's approach, James Blood Ulmer & Pat Metheny. I think it's just as strong as their work.

100% Cotton.......2001-06-28
The Holland Nix, 100% Cotton album is full of earthy, rock and rythm n blues, and folk and pop music, coupled with lyrics that lend themselves to love, sarcasm, fear and even a little comedy....all of which happens without trying too hard - without trying to be anything but just music, real music.
This singer, songwriter makes her own place in the world by taking what we all love about many genres of music, and molding them together to make her own style. Whether its the jammin' classic rock sound of 'The Airplane Song' or the stripped down acoustic offering of 'Not Around', you're going to find something on this album that you love - and you'll wonder how your CD player ever functioned before the arrival of this well rounded independent release.
It's now a 'must include' in my "shuffler", just like my favorite tshirt is in my suitcase for the next trip....both are 100% Cotton, and both are my favorite! My suggestion to you is that you slip in to your own 100% Cotton - it wears like no other album!
An Independent Woman.......2001-05-13
A mix of Aimee Mann's lyricism, Alanis Morisette's pop sensibility, a voice and lyrics that echo the underrated Jennifer Trynin, and Hole's attitude Holland's delivery and composition at times echoes the Heavy Metal roots of the Wilson Sister's from Heart. The producing/writing team of Nix and her fellow guitarist - Derek Wilkinson - mixes these elements into a varied and heartfelt listening experience.
Unlike her Lilith Fair sisters or other songstresses in this over produced day and age, Holland's album never becomes too sentimental and completely avoids the blips and computer generated whirrs that Nix's contemporaries have come to depend on as a matter of post-millennial course. The albums 4th track "Tall Ships" has a bar room grittiness and sing along bravado that keeps the listener in the delicate balance between a bad night of drinking and a good buzz.
The spoken word punkiness of "The Airplane Song" is backed by driving guitar power chords and makes you understand the kind of rage that drove REM's Peter Buck to cause "criminal damage" at 30,000 feet. More importantly it shows Nix's ability to use humor to describe an experience as simple and universal as a weekend flight. Her kitten with a whip delivery of lyrics like "I'm the frequent flyer/that never gets any miles/They make you stay over a Saturday/And wave bye-bye with a smile" portrays the inhuman inanity of the situation with an irony that expertly avoids being too self-conscious.
The album slows things down with "Muse" bringing Nix's delivery to classic rock ballad form - mournful guitar solo and all. On "Go Away" Nix manages to bring lightness to her voice as she shames the song's subject into leaving - it is quite obvious he is not nearly cool enough to be in her presence.
"Orion", one of my favorite tracks on the album, rambles along and interjects a stop and start jumpiness as Nix becomes the victim instead of the victor. The lyrics find Nix becoming the wind beneath someone else's wings - a position she is obviously not meant for.
The final track - "Not Around" - introduces a softer side of Nix - her voice brought to full emotional richness as she comes to terms with the weakness of a lover she has obviously poured too much of herself into. Don't worry - Nix does not lose herself completely as "At last/you have let me down" quickly becomes "At last/you have let you down". Her softness is matched by the bareness of her acoustic accompaniment giving her full singer/songwriter credibility.
Holland Nix's "100% Cotton" wears like your favorite sweatshirt made of the same material. It brings a fresh voice to a weary music scene and makes you remember a time when music was independent and natural. I highly recommend you try her debut album on for size.
