Your one-stop Zep shop!.......2007-05-01

I got this because after all the years of playing just made my vinyl too noisy to convert to CD, and at around average cost of $9 a CD (it's a 9 album 10 CD set), it would have cost me at least $8-9 per CD plus shipping. The way the CD's are in a sleeve (like the albums were) was kind of neat, and the storage case keeps all the CD packaging in one spot with the booklet. Also that 2 CD's are in each "album" is an innovative packaging idea and it has everything that each LP had as far as artwork goes. I would suggest to any Zep fan that doesn't have a lot of their CD's go this route as it will save you money in the long run. And the re-masters sound great. A few of the bonus tracks on the "CODA" CD are pretty decent, but the fact you can get all their studio stuff new for under $100 I think is awesome!

These guys are the masters, the reigning kings of Hard Rock. Every gem is in this box set. Granduer, awesomeness and epic could be a couple of words to describe this box set, all I've got to say is buy it for your self, it will change your life. There was a time when I lost my job and I had to sell most of my record collection to make ends meet. Out of my whole collection I wouldn't give this up. This set got me through that peroid and also got me through other tough peroids in my life.
This box set chronciles the bands starting, up to its monarch like ascent and then to its fall when Bonzo died. All the albums are here in a 10 Box Set. Dazed and Confused, Ramble On, Misty Mountain Hop, Black Dog, Rock n'Roll, Stairway To Heavan, Achille's Last Stand, Candy Shop Rock, Kashmir, and Ozone Baby all those juicy bits are here a song for each mood. Led Zep's influences are easily seen here, garage rock, psychedelia, progressive, Rockabilly, country and of course the greatest influence the Blues. I often wonder if there is in any truth in the myth the band sold their souls to the Dark One because such mind numbing talent is almost beyond the pale of reality. I'm telling you get this set no music lover will be disapponited. Absolutely Awesome. Has 4 bonus tracks never released "Baby Come On Home", "Travelling Riverside Blues", "White Summer/Black Mountain Side", and "Hey Hey What Can I Do?" all songs in the blues vein and take their place besides the other greats. There is also a book of liner notes written by Cameron Crowe that have bits of interviews with the band and info on some of the songs. All in all this is a must have for any Zep head or person who apperciates good music.

Can't Get Any Better Than This.......2007-01-20

This is the best boxed set in music history by the greatest rock band in music history. Too bad they did not include The Song Remains the Same and How the West Was Won to it.

My only problem with this set is that my red aussie cattle dog ate the slipcase for Led Zeppelin III and IV and I cannot replace it. So I have a nice set with nice double slipcases and one eaten by my dog. At least she has taste huh? P.S. The cds are still good.

While The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou movie got mixed reviews, the soundtrack was universally hailed as excellent. The standout was Jorge, who not only had a role as an actor but also played a handful of Bowie songs solo with acoustic guitar, singing them in Portuguese ­ it was a perfect combination of beautiful songs laid bare with a bit of exotic Brazilian spice to add fresh flavor. This collection features the whole of that Bowie session, which means Jorge's six songs from the soundtrack, seven other Bowie tunes and one playful Jorge original entitled "Team Zissou." Even though 2005 saw the release of his domestic debut Cru (which mostly featured his own songs and a band), Jorge found himself touring the U.S. in front of large crowds of 20-somethings who patiently waited for those Bowie songs. This album obviously gives the people what they want, and the good news is that the other versions are just as good as the ones that are on the original soundtrack. ­ --Tad Hendrickson

Today I purchased an album and I have not done this in months if not years. As a result of my love for David Bowie, covers, and Life Aquatic I purchased The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions by Seu Jorge. As Bowie puts it in the liner notes - thanks to Jorge he now knows how "beautiful" his songs are. Sung in Portugese a new melodious (nearly a lullaby feel) version of Bowie's classics are available. It has made my week.

I like this CD. The songs sound really cool with the classical guitar and the portuguese lyrics and his voice. I try to cover the songs but I haven't got a nylong string guitar and of course I'm singing Bowie's lyrics (but his versions are easier to learn, you know, one guitar so...). Just nice to listen to.

I recently purchased this CD SOLELY because it was my understanding it had a "hidden" track, noted on this page by "15. Untitled Track", SUPPOSED to be Space Oddity, one of my all-time favorite songs & again, the SOLE reason I wanted the CD in the first place... well, its not there. Did I miss something?!!!

Though the American folk movement of the early '60s would influence bands like the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield and a score of oh-so-sensitive '70s singer-songwriters, its two most looming successes during the decade--Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel--couldn't have seemed more disparate. While Dylan turned hard-left, outraging many a folk purist by zealously embracing rootsy blues-rock and its electrified cacophony, S&G veered toward the center, equally infuriating snooty pundits by embracing a Top 40 pop sense whose ostensible shallowness often belied its rich musical diversity. In retrospect, Simon and Garfunkel's career as a duo was remarkably brief (five albums in six years), if no less commercially potent (a slew of Top 40 singles, two Number One albums, and the requisite handful of Grammy Awards). This box set compiles digitally remastered versions of the original S&G albums, each expanded to include bonus tracks (mostly previously unissued demos with a few scattered outtakes, the quartet on Sounds of Silence the best of the lot) and a booklet featuring new notes for each album and song lyrics. It's a rewarding journey, wending from the almost slavish folk devotion of Wednesday Morning 3 AM through the greeting-card iconoclasm of Sounds of Silence, the madrigal-pop of Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme to the increasingly impressionistic lyrical landscape of Bookends. This CD set contains all of the studio recordings of Simon & Garfunkel throughout the 1960's. The progression of Simon & Garfunkel through lyrics and recording techniques are easily shown in these albums. It is also a bonus that the CDs come in miniature copies of the original album sleeves. It's great for any 60's music lover, whether S & G is your favorite or not.

These songs are "old friends".......2005-07-02

I may be the last Baby Boomer on the block to own this incredible set of the first 5 Simon & Gurfunkel albums on CD, but listening to all five back to back for the first time in many years has been like visiting with old friends.

When I was a teen, back in 1965-66, my buddy and I pulled lyrics, chords, fingerpicking techniques and harmonies off the first three albums. Our first big performance was (needless to say) Sound of Silence as 10th graders.

What's fun is to hear how Paul Simon developed as a songwriter and guitar player through this sequence of albums, including the outtakes and demos.

Now, forty years later, I spend some my weekends hangin' at a local coffeehouse open mic where I hear teens singing, among other songs, some of these classic tunes by S&G.

This is the collection to own. The sound clarity is incredible compared to the vinyl sitting in my garage. And it's still impressive poetry in these lyrics.

Now if I could only locate my 10th grade singing buddy, we could sing these some of these tunes again as "old friends."

An absolute must-own.......2005-04-28

I bought this several months ago and am still happy that I did.

Before, I only had the S&G Greatest Hits and it was my favorite CD. The thing is, that every album they made plays like a greatest hits album. There are only two or three tracks that I skip over in the entire box. That's how high the quality is.

Buying the albums in this box definitely has advantages. The book has a nice summary of each album and complete lyrics. The album sleeves are really cool-looking and it feels like the CDs are brand new material. The box is nice and can almost be used as decoration.

These five CDs are some of my favorites. Simon and Garfunkel were true musical geniuses and every album they made is worthy of being owned.

The Columbia Studio Recorings 1964-1970 (2001.) Simon And Garfunkel's second box set.

Simon And Garfunkel, though their partnership was short lived, managed to create some of the most excellent pop songs of the sixties and early seventies. It's a shame they only lasted for five albums, because they could have done so many other great things together (but I guess their solo careers kind of made up for this.) Many compilations and collections of the band's work have been released over the years. In 2001, the band released its second box set, The Columbia Studio Recordings. How does it measure up? Read on for my review.

PROS:
-ALL FIVE OF THE CLASSIC COLUMBIA RECORDS ALBUMS ARE HERE. You get Wednesday Morning 3AM, Sounds Of Silence, Parsley Sage Rosemary And Thyme, Bookends, and Bridge Over Troubled Water. Each one has been remastered and sounds great.
-THE ALBUMS COME IN REPLICA LP CASES! This is great, because the covers and the back covers look identical to their original releases. Why can't all bands do the CD cases in their box set like this? It was an excellent idea.
-BONUS TRACKS ON EVERY ALBUM. There are a plethora of bonus tracks in this set, and many of them are previously unreleased. It's a shame these tracks have been so hard to come by over the years, but I'm happy to see them all together in one place!
-THE BOOKLET IS PRETTY HANDY. The booklet is rather lengthy, and has new liner notes, as well as lyrics to every song. This is a pretty convenient tool to have handy for learning about the band, or for learning the lyrics to their songs.
-FOR THE MOST PART, THIS PUTS THE OLD BOX SET, OLD FRIENDS, TO SHAME. Old Friends was only a three-disc set and lacked liner notes. And this set basically corrects all the flaws that the old set had.
-A GREAT VALUE. For one fairly low price, you get ALL of the duo's albums! This makes this set a great alternative to buying all of the albums separately.

CONS:
-ONLY THE FIVE STUDIO ALBUMS AND A FEW BONUS TRACKS. Because it's a studio recordings box set, the duo's live albums aren't included. This is a shame, because they were a pretty good live act.
-SOME MISSING STUDIO TRACKS. No, nothing's missing from the actual albums. However, there are several tracks that could have been bonuses on here that should have been included. For example, the alternate version of Mrs. Robinson from the Graduate soundtrack.
-WHY FIVE DISCS? The record company could easily have condensed this material onto considerably less discs. This would likely have resulted in a lower price.

OVERALL:
If you want to get all of Simon And Garfunkel's albums, you have a few choices on how to do it, but I think getting them all here is the obvious and best choice. Take my advice and get this set. No classic pop collection is complete without these classic albums.

Glenn Gould's recording debut in 1955 of Bach's Goldberg Variations took the world by storm. His decidedly un-Romantic view, absolute technical skill, startling lucidity, and right-on rhythmic changes, combined with his eccentricities--audible humming, sometimes outrageously fast tempi--made him an instantly legendary pianist and elucidated Bach's music in a whole new way. Gould's final recording, 26 years later, was also of the Goldbergs. It's a more relaxed, sometimes much slower, more inward reading (although still very much his own, complete with oddly ferocious attacks and accents), in which he offers repeats of the first half of 15 of the Variations. Both performances are glorious, each in its own way, and this luxurious new set of three CDs is entertaining, a joy to hear, and revelatory; it belongs in any music lover's collection. The third CD is devoted to outtakes and chatter from recording sessions. At one point, Gould improvises "God Save the King" and exhibits how it turns into "The Star-Spangled Banner." Amazing playing but.......2007-07-14

Glenn Gould has mastered the Bach, Goldberg Variations with out a question of doubt. His playing and style is absolutely amazing. The part that spoils the whole thing for me is when he starts humming. If you listen to it with the head phones on you can hear him humming away in the back ground. It is such a shame as he spoils his own brilliant performance.

Imagine going to live piano recital. The music is gorgeous, you're really getting into it - and the person next to you starts humming along. You try to block it out, but the more you do, the more conscious of it you become. It becomes all you can hear, and suddenly the performance is just background noise to the humming. That's my experience with these CDs, the 1981 version more so than the 1955. Perhaps the humming's not so prominent when played on a proper stereo system, but listening on my PC with a pair of headphones, the humming is all I hear, and it's absolutely maddening. I can deal with the hiss, but the infernal humming is just too much for my mere mortal concentration. It may be the most amazing performance of anything ever, but if you can't listen to it, does it matter?

"Oddly ferocious attacks".......2007-05-08

My title comes from the editorial review above. Why such attacks? Bach wrote the Goldberg Variations for a harpsichord with two registers (two keyboards). Until Wanda Ladowska revived them in the 1930s, on a "pian-arpsichord" built specially for her, they were considered unplayable on piano. That opinion was correct, like it or not. The contrasts of register, intrinsic to the music, CANNOT be rendered intelligently merely by hammering ornaments and dancing on the pedals. Some pianists, however, come closer to making decent music of the Goldbergs by subduing their egos and letting the delicacy of the counterpoint be heard. There may be a case for playing Bach's other harpsichord solo works on piano -- Richard Goode does a decent job, for instance -- but the Goldberg Variations belong on harpsichord only forevermore.

One for the ages........2007-02-14

To be a sonic witness to this music is a real treat. Gould's approach both times is so personal and probing. What is really satisfying is how the 1981 recording is not just a rehash of 1955. Each era has it's own unique and distinct personality. This is a "must" in your musical collection.

A Life-Affirming Adventure.......2007-01-06

If you are new to Bach and Gould, "A State of Wonder" offers you a life-affirming adventure. This 3-disc package includes Glenn Gould's 1955 recording of the Goldberg Variations, with raw exuberance and breakneck speed. Disc 2 contains his 1981 reinterpretation, and this music has never sounded more divinely beautiful to this perpetual Bach student. Disc 3 is icing on the cake, featuring Gould's professorial zeal and musical logic (also lame but endearing humor). If you love the Goldberg--and I passionately hope you will--then curiosity will lead you to superb piano versions by Andras Schiff and Murray Perahia, and Wanda Landowska on the harpsichord. For further Bachian "wonder," Artur Schnabel's recording of the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue is awesome. Gould's Bach, however, remains my favorite. As for the brouhaha about his sometimes audible humming, I love it: Glenn lives!

Novelist Robert Ludlum's amnesia-plagued, tough-as-nails spy/assassin Jason Bourne again proves that success begats sequels, be they literary or cinematic. As he did for the saga's initial big screen installment, composer John Powell concocts an electro-orchestral fusion score that seasons its tense, bristling rhythms with dollops of melodicism, synth-atmospherics and staccato string figures. Those welcome touches hearken back to composer's similar work on the '03 action-thriller The Italian Job, with Powell initially evoking the film's exotic locales by employing a savory synth pop-meets-Eastern European palate. The tension-building rhythms and percussion flourishes familiar from Powell's other action-centric scores are the score's musical pulse -- even if they eventually upset the finely honed balancing act by boiling over into the familiar explosive cliches of all too many thriller scores. --Jerry McCulley

I wrote a very positive review of the soundtrack for "The Bourne Identity"...I was right to do so. This soundtrack; however, is even better!

What can I say...the wonderful musial selections to this great movie are all here...I suggest buying a copy now...if you are a Bourne fan.

One other note of interest...this sound track included Moby's song, "Extreme Ways" this time...an obvious oversight corrected from the last soundtrack

I enjoyed this soundtrack immensely. Having heard the background themes to the Bourne movies from the movie, I knew right away that I would like the soundtrack.
The soundtrack is mainly a combination of electronic and orchestral themes except for the last song by Moby, "Extreme Ways". Instead of basing the soundtrack on one or two main riffs, the pieces rely on multiple riffs. While in some respect I wished that John Powell could have expanded some of the pieces (like Gao), I was satisfied that there was enough genuinely unique material throughout.
Regarding the song-content on this album, there is mainly orchestral pieces as mentioned earlier. I did some research on-line and found that the song in the chase-scene of the first Bourne series, The Bourne Identity, is by Paul Oakenfold - 'Ready Steady Go'. Also, the club music in the second Bourne series, The Bourne Supremecy, is by Mocean Worker - 'IntoThinAir'. Two great artists that I hardly knew about before the Bourne series.

Best soundtrack I've listened to........2006-01-16

I listen to this album on my five-hour drives between home and college. You'd think I'd get tired of the songs, but I don't. The time goes very fast when listening to this album. However, several of the songs make me want to imitate the car chase sequence in the film. So, although this album is truly wonderful, drive carefully while listening to it.

Excellent Score -- Very Unique.......2007-02-22

I have long been a film-score aficionado. My favorite composers are Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams -- only the best of the best. I had always known about James Newton Howard and his work, and always respected his unique abilities and talents.

It was with this score that he really caught my attention. The central theme of the film is a love story, and the characters just happen to be caught up in a nightmarish scenario. The score reflects this perfectly; some of the pieces are classically romantic, quiet pieces, while others are thunderous and frightening to reflect the danger and terror portrayed in the film.

James Newton Howard's later works, like "King Kong" (2005) and his co-score with Hans Zimmer on "Batman Begins" (2005) continued to show that he is rightly considered one of Hollywood's A-list composers for big films.

I admit I absolutely hated "The Village". The film started out rather good. The build up in suspense was flawlessly executed but then the second half of the film totally went downhill for me. One of the few things I enjoyed about "The Village" is the film score by James Newton Howard. The combination of the orchestral film score and dark cinematography was perfect. Both complimented each other. Violinist Hilary Hahn was what really gravitated me to the music. A lot of film scores have a terrible tendency to be loud and bombastic (like John Williams and Hans Zimmer) but James Howard Newton's score is subtle and never overwhelming to a person's ears.

'The Village' was panned pretty harshly in critical circles, but whatever you think of the film, James Newton Howard's score for it is a beautiful piece of work. It lends a haunting, lyrical quality to the film, and it is wonderful to listen to by itself, whether or not you like or have even seen the movie.

While there are a couple pieces in the score that are a little more high-octane in terms of suspense, most of the music is very low-key. Still suspenseful, even spooky at times, but in a very understated and thoughtful way. In some ways similar to Howard's score for 'Signs', which also used repeated rhythms and themes throughout in different ways, the music for 'The Village' differs from the standard "scary movie" score by having pieces which establish a real emotional depth and presence. 'The Village' is a film about love and loss, and much of the music expresses those themes perfectly.

A big part of how the music gets to the depths of emotion is the solo violin performances of Hilary Hahn, present to some extent in almost every piece. From the opening strains of "Noah Visits," the first piece on the CD, her violin speaks the language of the heart and draws the listener into a beautiful world of haunting music, inescapable and compelling. I am amazed by her versatility here. From the fast rhythmic notes of "The Gravel Road" to the high strains of "I Cannot See His Color" to the final, bittersweet tones of "The Vote," Hahn's violin creates a steady thread through the whole score, unifying it and making it unique at the same time. I've listened to several of Hahn's classical performances as well, but I have to say that of what I've heard, her performance for 'The Village' may be her most unique and most compelling yet.

The combination of James Newton Howard's compositions and Hilary Hahn's lush performance have created some beautiful music for 'The Village'. Whether you love the movie or hate it, or even if you're just looking for some rich orchestral music with a beautiful violin performance, this score is well worth owning and listening to many times over.

Good Soundtrack!.......2006-08-03

I'll admit I bought this soundtrack for the music that played during the rescue scene when Phoenix grabbed Howard's hand---that part alone was worth the buy--beautiful music. Anyway, if you like scary music, there's plenty of that on here, but I usually skip those. So let's get down to it---how many tracks do I play over and over and never get sick of them? Numbers 9, 8, and 4's second half-- it switches from scary to the scene mentioned above. Those three are hauntingly beautiful. Numbers 1 and 5 are also very pretty if you are in a very relaxed state. The rest I don't really listen to simply because they're scary. But, if I can find a cd with at least 3 songs I really like, I consider it worth buying...so I recommend this soundtrack. Plug--- recommend the movie even more, even though the music is scarier than the movie itself. That movie has the best chic flic moment I've seen (guess which scene I'm talking about). Also, "Good afternoon Lucius..."--- that part is hilarious!

I'm a sucker for film scores. I can't get enough of em'. I've listened to a lot, and based on the reviews James N. Howard's score was getting for "The Village", I decided to buy it.
I have mixed feelings--the music is definitely very pretty, very soothing (or agressive when needed), but I never really felt like I was listening to anything but just 'another' score here. There really isn't anything especially beautiful or stand-out, and I have heard orchestral scores from independent films (see 2002's "Stranded", a low-budget sci-fi film made for only about four million clams that boasts one of the most gorgeous scores you will ever hear)that are more memorable and evocative.
This, I hate to say it, just kinda felt "blah" to me.
Not bad.
Just...kinda..."Blah".

Based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale The Princess and the Pea, Once Upon a Mattress opened in May 1959 and was a solid success, if not a huge blockbuster. It did well enough, in any case, to warrant a 1997 revival starring Sarah Jessica Parker. The show was far from revolutionary, but it provided a really fun vehicle for a cast of top stage personalities, including black actress Jane White, who played Queen Aggravain (a part originally written for comedienne Nancy Walker) in whiteface. But of course, Once Upon a Mattress's heart and soul was Carol Burnett, who, in her Broadway debut created the part of Princess Winnifred and delivered two of Mary Rodgers's best songs, the hilarious "Shy" and the spunky "Happily Ever After," which sounds a bit like Jule Styne at his most rhythmic. Burnett's timing and performance remain as sharp as they were 40 years ago. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

No offense to any of the subsequent "Freds" but Carol Burnett OWNS this role. The recording is as fresh and funny as anything being done today and this is the version musical theatre fans should have in their library. Get it.

My school did this musical last year (Spring 2005) and I had never heard of it before, so I bought both the Revial and the Original Cast Recordings. Fell in love. I was Sir Harry and loved both songs that I sang in. In my opinion, those are the two best songs in the entire musical, but then again, I'm biased.

Once Upon A Mattress OCR is by far the best out there. Don't get me wrong, the Revival Cast did a wonderful job (soundtrack at least) But There is something about Carol Burnett. She was meant to sing be Fred. But one thing that I didn't like is that "The Minstrel, the Jester & I" wasn't in this recording. But that is really the only problem I had with this.

I saw the original on Broadway.......2005-12-19

Once Upon a Mattress was one of the first Broadway shows that I ever saw and I was totally mesmorized and laughed so hard that my side hurt. Carol Burnett was the perfect person to play Fred and it was one of those magical performances that stays with you for a lifetime. The original cast album captures the fun and spirit of the show.

Later during the run of the show a friend of mine joined the chorus and when we talked about the experience, he told me that the joy that was on stage was similar to that felt by the cast and that was apparent on the album. They especially liked working with Ms. Burnett as she was a giving and caring actress.

I recommend this album to anyone who wants to spend some time just feeling good.

Gentle, graceful, subtle, sweet--these aren't descriptions generally applied to the blues, but they offer a sense of Mississippi John Hurt's uniqueness and enduring legacy. Rediscovered during the 1960s folk boom after last recording in the late 1920s, Hurt cut the three albums compiled here when he was in his early 70s. His conversational phrasing sounds as natural as breathing, while his ragtime-tinged fingerpicking on acoustic guitar reveals more complexity the closer you listen. Beyond blues classics like "Candy Man" (the sly sensualist wasn't referring to lollipops), Hurt's range encompasses everything from folkish narratives ("Talking Casey," "Spike Driver Blues") to Southern spirituals ("Nearer My God to Thee," "Farther Along"). This won't be a particularly helpful review because I don't "know" music. All I can say that ever since seeing The Blues Brothers, I have enjoyed listening to blues without knowing much about it. Favorites include Howlin' Wolf and Robert Johnson... and John Hurt.

Classic Blues.......2006-02-28

This compilation of Mississippi John Hurt's Vanguard recordings are classics. These albums were recorded in the 60's after he was re-discovered by a music industry full swing into folk, blues, and "old timey" music. The audio quality is superb, the songs are timeless, and the voice is amazing. A must have for any serious blues fan. Robert Johnson is not the end all, be all of delta blues. Check out Mississippi John Hurt.

A review and a question.......2005-12-27

First my review:

The recorded legacy of MJH falls into roughly five categories.

(1) his early 1928 recordings on the OKEH label which comprise around 20 tracks. Although they are quite listenable and of historical interest and importance they are not the most enjoyable of his recordings. (2) recordings from 1963 that are available on the Rounder label. The sound quality of these recordings is somewhat disappointing. For that reason alone I don't listen to them much except for the fact that they were heavily relied upon by people who transcribed his songs for instructional materials. (3) The Library of Congress recordings (also from 1963). These are perhaps the best. The sound quality is excellent and there is an informality to the sessions which makes it like having MJH as a house guest for the weekend determined to play you every song he knows. (4) The (these) Vanguard Recordings, which I think were recorded between 1967 and 1969. These rival and sometimes surpass the Library of Congress Recordings as far as the material goes. There is also a palpable sadness as you can detect a man near the end of his life aware of the fact that he may very well be making his final recordings. The audio engineers did a terrible job at Vanguard for a good deal of these recordings. How can you screw up recording just one guy with a guitar? If you try hard enough you can set the levels WAY off. That is how. (5) there is also a Live MJH CD from Vanguard. It's sound quality is pretty good and it is endearing to hear MJH talk to an audience, but I find it less compelling material wise than the studio recordings.

Listening to MJH makes you want to piick up the guitar and learn to play like him. The good thing about this is that if you really want to you probably can. Many of his songs have been transcribed and broken down in intructional books and DVDs. After going through a "beginning fingerpicking" DVD by Stefan Grossman you are probably ready to take on MJH.

Go for it!

And now for my question:

It's not obvious to me from the Vanguard website whether the boxed set is actually a newer digital remaster than the original digital re-masters from the mid 80s. As far as digital remasters go those ones were a bit of a disaster. When you put the disc into your player you would have to crank the volume on your stereo. As you might expect, the careless lack of attention to levels setting in the remastering process resulted in a mushy sounding guitar. I seem to remember that was also a problem with the vinyl Vanguard LPs, particularly the first one. Hopefully these CDs really are *new* remasters because most CDs re-mastered these days are remastered quite well.

My music management software for encoding MP3s has the capability of looking up CDs in an online database. Whenever I present it with copies of the old mid 1980s vanguard CDs it recognizes them as possibly being from the boxed set, so I hesitate to spring for the "new remasters" without really knowing if they are indeed recently remastered. Perhaps someone else could clear this up.

John Hurt recordings should be a Schedule One drug.......2005-07-08

John Hurt is without a doubt my favorite bluesman. His guitar work is seamless. If you'd like to buy some blues for easier listening, get these. Blues is to often absrasive, but all of that disolves in Hurt's world. This music is terminally infectious, and will most certainly carry me to my grave.

There isn't much I can say about this beautiful movie, except that it was so touching!
It say's go for the "true love", settle for nothing else no matter what may be in store, because love that is "true" and as beautiful as their's was, is a rare thing!
I absolutely loved the ending.
I also loved that a movie CAN be truly wonderful, beautiful and touching WITHOUT grafic "sex scenes!" Also sadly a rare thing in movies today.

Ever seen "Hanover Street?" Equally beautiful. No SEX scenes either!

I do not have the soundtrack to The Notebook, but I do have the movie itself. Having said that, every song is wonderful. Some music carries with it, a wealth of emotion and a sense of timelessness. I love all of the classical pieces , perhaps the best, in this particular movie. Classical has never been my speed when it comes down to music, but something about this movie's classical masterpieces struck a chord in me...made me smile and maybe even sniffle a bit. If you are a fan of the movie, I'm sure you would love its soundtrack too. Music like this is ideal for a romantic evening or just for pleasure listening. You don't know if you'll like something until you give it a chance! So give this a chance!!

This is a beautiful collection of music from the movie, The Notebook. Most is instrumental, very relaxing, as well as lively at times. Two renditions of "I'll Be Seeing You" are included.

I really enjoyed listening to the soundtrack, but I'm also a big fan of background music and this cd was great for both. Listening to the cd took me back to the movie and reminded me how much I enjoyed it, but I also put the cd on during a nice meal with friends and it worked out very well, they all enjoyed the music.

The music from The Notebook brings you right back to the film, capturing your heart and soul. It's music will roll live waves through your soul and bring you from nostalgia to your own feelings of love and desire. The selections, arrangements and orchestrations are to be admired, and Mr. Zigman is to be praised. This soundtrack truly completes the legacy of "The Notebook".

best set out there?.......2007-04-13

JSP is known throughout the music collector world for having the highest in sound quality (for a relatively small label devoted only to reissues, box sets etc). This set includes all of the master takes Bird appeared on on the Savoy, Dial, Guild, Bel-Tone, and Comet labels, during the years 1944-48, plus a disc containing most of his pre-bop recordings, including demos, some of which are very rare (though not very interesting in my opinion). The main stuff, '44-'48, is some of the most important music recorded ever, and consequently it's not hard to come by- what makes this set unique is the combination of price, quality, and completeness. This set can be compared with "The Complete Savoy & Dial Master Takes", which has only 3 discs and costs about $50. Granted, the sound quality on that professional reissue set is noticeably superior, but JSP is nearly there and like I said, better than MOST. You could also compare this set to the similarly-priced Proper box set, "Boss Bird", four discs covering the same ground, with highly inferior sound quality- and it's a little more expensive! For one who's never dug Charlie Parker, I'd get a single disc, like "The Legendary Dial Masters vol. 1" or even a general comp like his volume of the "Ken Burns' Jazz" series. If you find yourself a total Parker freak, the step after that would be "The Complete Savoy and Dial Studio Recordings" which coves the same ground, with highest quality of all, plus every known alternate take, demo, etc- 8 discs, $80, and increasingly harder to come by. OR, if you'd prefer to spend $25 to get pretty much the same thing (minus alt takes and a little sound), this box set will definitely do.

I own both the Complete Dial and Savoy recordings, and the sound on this set blows both of those away. As another reviewer pointed out, the first disc contains a bit of hiss, but other than that, this is the best sounding CP I have heard.

Combine that with the quality of Bird's playing on these tracks, and you can't beat it. There is such joy, emotion, and straight up fire in his playing it is easy to see how Bird burst on the scene and forever changed jazz (and for that matter American) music.

JSP, run by an eccentric British jazz fanatic called Ted Kendall, has a habit of turning out box sets of older jazz recordings that put the big companies to shame.

Having put out the best available set of Hot Fives, Kendall turns his attention to the second most important jazz recordings of all time - the Savoy and Dial sessions of Charlie Parker.

I am totally new to bebop, having cut my teeth on Coltrane and Miles Davis. This box set is like the New Testament of jazz - Charlie Parker and his compatriots had discovered a radically new way of playing jazz, bebop, in a series of low budget recordings that mark the Anno Domini of postwar music.

The centrepiece is the legendary Ko Ko session of November 1945 - with the war over, the ban on recording was lifted, and Parker could reveal his discoveries to the world. Ko Ko itself is possibly one of the three most important jazz cuts of all time (along with West End Blues and Body and Soul) - a dazzling improvisation entirely on chord changes, with no reference to the original melody ("Cherokee", by Paul Whiteman) at all!

JSP has seen fit to include excellent editions of all the Savoy and Dial master takes - that's right, ALL of them (although there has been some discussion over the fact that alternate takes have been substituted in some cases - presumably because Kendall prefers the alternates). The box also constitutes a studio archaeology - because fully two discs of the five contain material from BEFORE the epoch-making Ko Ko session. It includes, too, the notorious "Lover Man" session of 1946, when Parker was strung out, drunk out of his mind, and had to be held up to the mike - a slurred solo of genuine pain, unthinkable from the swing era.

This is the real deal - cheap, well packaged and well transferred - if you are starting out in bebop you cannot do better.

Charlie Parker: The Dictionary of Jazz.......2005-09-11

Charlie Parker was the most influential improvising soloists in jazz, and a central figure in the development of bop in the 1940s. A legendary figure in his own lifetime, he was idolized by those who worked with him, and he inspired a generation of jazz performers and composers.

Parker was born Aug. 20, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo., and came to music while in junior high school. In the late '30s he jobbed around the city, honing his technique and tone. He first recorded with the Jay McShann orchestra in between 1940 and 1942. The early 1940 radio transcriptions and the later commercial sessions for Decca show Parker pushing at the edges of the swing parameters with an explosive gift for unexpected phrasing and twists.

His progress over the next two years was striking but largely undocumented, due to a recording ban imposed by the musicians union. By the time he resumed recording in 1944-'45, his dazzling improvisations at breakneck tempos ("Ko Ko," "Donna Lee," "Shaw Nuff") astonished young jazz players as profoundly as they threatened veteran ones, thus setting the new against the old and triggering the first major internecine musical controversy in jazz history.

But the battle deepened into a cultural as well as a musical war as Parker's penchant for hard drugs and hard living further defined bebop as an outlaw music with an implied lifestyle that many chose to follow.

The definitive recordings of Parker's career were made for Savoy between 1945 and '48 ("Now's the Time," "Thriving Of A Riff," "Billie's Bounce"), and for Dial from 1946-'47 ("Ornithology," "A Night In Tunsia," "Lover Man," "Scrapple From The Apple"). They sold poorly but were as profoundly influential to young post war players as Armstrong's Hot Sevens and early big band sides had been to musicians of the '30s. Even during his most innovating period Parker remained something of a mystery figure to the general public. His picture never even appeared on Down Beat's cover during his lifetime.

The third major chapter of Parker's work began in 1948, when Norman Granz began recording him in different contexts with a view toward taking his music to a wider audience. By now his major innovations were over and his repertoire had narrowed to small number of staples. But an album with string accompaniment produced a mother lode of brilliant new Parker solos that would be his last major work. He died in 1955 at the age of 35 of a combination of drug related medical problems.

In 1955, Parker was elected by the Readers to the Down Beat Hall of Fame, just following his death.

The Studio Chronicle 1940-1948 is a five-disc box set from the British label JSP detailing what producer Ted Kendall considers to be THE essential studio recordings of saxophonist Charlie Parker. Included here are not only the innovative bebop sides that made Parker a living legend, but also the early Kansas City swing recordings he appeared on while playing with the Jay McShann Orchestra. The result is a studio history of Parker's development from a struggling farm kid turned musician to the most important figure in jazz history next to Louis Armstrong. Given that these recordings are widely available, the real attraction here is the faithful-to-the-original remastered sound, the historically enlightening liner notes, and the overarching critical aesthetic that these are the Bird cuts to check out. Also, given that the tracks are presented with few repeats on discs in chronological order makes this better listening than Atlantic's Complete Savoy and Dial Studio Recordings 1944-1948. Oddly though, the only place Kendall delineates what labels these tracks were originally released on - mostly Dial and Savoy - is in the track listing and there only by label numbers. Despite this confusing omission, Kendall has produced a superb collection that illuminates more than it overlooks.

This Truly dictionary of jazz in 5 CD's shows that CHARLIE PARKER'S MUSIC is magical music. It is irresistible music. Listen to it once and you will never stop.
His music sometimes begins to flow into your head, suddenly, during daily life. Once this happens, his music will sound in your head for good.
