Album Description

European edition of their fifth studio album features a bonus disc of remixes of all the tracks features on the album. 22 tracks in all. Hooverphonic is based in Belgium, a small European country with a strong music scene featuring an open air festival tradition that starts as early as 1959. Hooverphonic's career has been marked from the beginning by international recognition, when the song '2 Wicky' was chosen for the movie 'Stealing Beauty' by Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci. From then on, their music kept appearing in movies, TV shows and commercials in the States, as well as in Spain and Japan. If Hooverphonic's '97 debut 'A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular' clearly showed trip hop roots, the band has evolved since with three albums in five years. In 2001 they headlined at the Werchter festival in front of a crowd of 50.000. In 2003 they released 'Sit Down and Listen to', live recorded with a string quartet and followed by a tour with more than 60 concerts in 9 countries. Sony. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Their absolute best yet!!.......2006-12-28

I really, really enjoy this CD. I think this has to be their best album since "stereophonic" and is their "sweetest" music yet. I really do like all of their other albums also (with Jackie Cane being my least favorite), but this one really stands out to me as being extremely well crafted. And the fact that it includes an additional disc with remixes of every song really expands the value and the listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars Completely Accessible.......2006-06-10

I made a "best of" Hoover CD a few yrs ago and everyone I pass it along to just falls in love with this band. This latest release, though it looks like it's a long way off from being out in the USA (I recommend buying it used), just keeps the magic rolling. It is smooth, fun to listen to, with great hooks, great beats, wonderful vocals. The "A" version of the title track is the coolest song I have heard in years, there is not a single weak track on either disc ("heartbeat" maybe - that one's not a keeper). I am very happy with this CD, its been playing at my house practically every night since I got it. Highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Essential For Any Hooverphonic Fan.......2006-03-16

"No More Sweet Music" is actually two albums - the aforementioned title and also a second disc entitled "More Sweet Music". Each of them contain the same 11 songs - by name and lyrics only. I've never heard an album like this before. I gave up deciding which disc is the primary disc. One disc is not comprised of dubbed versions, live versions, outtakes or anything else one could categorize.

Both albums present each song in a very different way. There is no discernable pattern - for instance, songs on one disc are not of a certain genre (trip hop, electronica, etc)..again each disc presents 11 songs, each completely different from the same title on the other disc. Amazing.

That said, the songs themselves are outstanding. I rank this album with Hooverphonics' finest efforts to date. Standout tracks are the title track, "We All Float", "You Love Me to Death", "Dirty Lenses" and the very radio-friendly "You Hurt Me".

Not only is this album a double treat, it is a challenge as well. In no way do I mean this album is inaccessible - it is, very much so. It is a challenge in that you have to get used to hearing two superb but absolutely different versions of the same song. A sensational idea and executed perfectly - an incredibly inspired and innovative feat. Superbly euphoric and dreamy from beginning to end. Highly recommended and well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars More sweet music...please!.......2006-02-07

While a lot of people dislike the direction Hooverphonic went after their debut, I happen to love it (for the most part). I loved A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular, but I've also loved every subsequent album. The one problem that I have had with all their albums (aside from the first) is that there are always a couple tracks that are SO odd and experimental that even I had trouble with them (such as the last three tracks on Presents Jackie Cane, which was otherwise my former favorite Hoover album). That is not the case with No More Sweet Music. They've ditched the over-the-top showtuney experiments in favor of a more cohesive and overall pleasant listening experience. There are enough chill tracks to please fans of their older stuff and enough poppy, flamboyant tracks to please fans of their more recent stuff.

I initially didn't like the idea of two versions of the same album because I expected one to be significantly better and the other to be mostly throw-aways. That is not the case at all, though! Both versions are incredible and I listen to them equally. I'd say the general sound is a combination of all previous albums. There's also an Asian flair among some of the tracks that adds to the cool vibe. More Sweet Music is more organic/loungy while NO More Sweet Music is more electronic/trip-hoppy. If I had to choose, I think I like More Sweet Music just slightly more - mostly because I like its version of "We All Float" much more and its version of the title track is probably my favorite Hoover song ever. Seriously, I'm obsessed with it. My least favorite track is "Music Box" from More Sweet Music. The music and the verses are cool, but the chorus is a bit off-key and just doesn't work for me.

Overall, this is another masterpiece (actually two masterpieces) by one of my favorite (and most underrated) bands. I can't stop playing these discs. This will definitely be one of 2006's best.

4 out of 5 stars Old Hooverphonic is dead, long life new Hooverphonic!.......2005-12-30

The band is changing and this is clearly shows through thier latest album - it is nothing like their first releases. If you enjoyed the original Hooverphonic, you will probably be dissapointed, as you will find "No more sweet music" too commercial, almost pop. On the other hand, if you have more traditional tastes, you will probably like this release as it offers a few catchy melodies, more sophisticated sound and a good beat here and there. One item I must agree with another reviewer - the main singer's vocals are somewhat mediocre.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Erotic Lounge Definitely Delivers the Lounge ... Other Part of Title Up to You :-).......2006-02-01

"Lounge" is a term often over-used in compilations these days. Some people wil slap that label on anything with a beat (that's not hard trance) or anything remotely soft (New Age/meditative or World music is NOT necessarily 'lounge' or 'chill.')

But in the case of this collection - they actually have labeled and named it correctly!

As for the "Erotic" portion, these CD's will definitely help with the right person(s) in the room ... just like listening to Barry White by yourself - in a blizzard - inside a Greyhound bus station in Fairbank, Alaska may not help you much, these CD's deliver on the promise of great 'lounge' music - the rest is up to you :-)

There are four in the series so far. They are all excellent with only a few tracks not up to par on each set so you can't really go wrong but there are differences.

EROTIC LOUNGE: The first is the softest of them all with lots of minimalist lounge. A perfect CD to end your evening or the first CD in the morning.

EROTIC LOUNGE - DELUXE EDITION: It's exactly what a 'lounge' CD should be - full of chill beats backed by light jazz beats or bossa nova-like beats. If anyone wants to know what 'lounge' should sound like - this CD pretty much encapsulates what it should be.

EROTIC LOUNGE - SENSUAL PASSION: Along with great 'lounge' tracks, they pick up a beat a bit with tracks that go into trance chill or trip hop - again, all tasteful, fun and aptly cool. On the slightly exotica tracks, they veer from bossa nova to light samba.

EROTIC LOUNGE - BARE JEWELS: This is the least lounge of the collection with most tracks really more trip hop, light trance or melodic acid jazz - nothing wrong with - still a great collection of tracks - just so you know exactly what you're getting.

So whatever the mood you want to set - from 'lounge' where you can easily converse over the instrumental tracks to tracks that will get you in the mood for a fun samba or tracks to lead to you to the bedroom - they're all here. Pick and choose or get them all - you can't go wrong with this series, so far, they're all great.

And hey, the CD cover alone is worth a star :-)

5 out of 5 stars Great CD to listen to in the bedroom.......2005-12-18

I purchased this CD while on vacation in Europe and was blown away. It made every hotel my wife and I stayed in very enjoyable. It is a great CD to listen to from foreplay to finish. It is also a great CD just to throw on and enjoy while inebriated. It also has some great pictures on the inside booklet. I will be purhasing the other CD's in "the art of loungin'" set as well.

5 out of 5 stars They are our past..........2003-05-23

...and maybe, maybe they are our future. I have been listening to new age music since I was in the 5th grade but this was mostly the first one I ever listened to. I remember hearing a few songs my dad played when I was very young. But this was the first one that I bought. Deep Forest is the name used by french keyboardists Eric Mouquet and Michael Sanchez but they don't just use keyboards they also use afican vocals. It is an excellent combination and so far the best one that I have heard from world music.

In my opinion, every song is worth listening to. My favorites on the album are: Sweet Lullaby[ambient mix], Night Bird, Desert Walk, White Whisper and The Second Twilight. The extra features on the album are different mixes from Sweet Lullaby, Deep Forest and Forest Hymn. This is just like a special edition of the original album called Deep Forest which as I know it now is out of print. But I am glad that I was able to get a copy of this one.

I would recommend this album to anyone who likes tribal rythems with new age music. I loved the album and I hope you do to.

5 out of 5 stars 6 starz.......2003-05-10

I'm a fan of Deep Forest. I love it. Deep Forest (along with Enigma) is #1 new release I am watching for in stores and/or on Amazon.com and as soon it comes out I buy it. Along with Deep Forest I also love Enigma, Amethystium and few others. Deep Forest is one of the best New Age "artists". I recommend all Deep Forest CDs to every New Age music fan and not only.
Wonderful and exotic music for your ear and soul!

3 out of 5 stars Wacky, wacky group!.......2002-09-20

Wild, Wild World Mix Music. What is "World Mix Music"? Can't really explain it. All I know is that I heard one song and bought the album. The pygmie yodeling song got to me. (I actually heard it in my sleep!)

Listened to it so much, I can't anymore. It's different, if you like that sort of thing.

5 out of 5 stars A PIECE OF EDEN.......2002-03-29

Like in the Bible, this CD is a trip inside a forest, where the past, represented by primitive people, could be felt like a return to the beginning of Genesis, where world was just a Sweet lullaby during the firsts twilights, and humans and trees, animals and even the wind sung togheter. It is also a description of a wanted future. Best Songs: Sweet Lullaby, Sunrise at Alcatraz, Forest Hymn

5 out of 5 stars Deep Forest.......2001-12-08

With No Press Exposure and Only a Handful of Live Shows (But Thanks to an Oft Repeated John Peel Session) the Album Reached the Top 10 in the Independent Chart Where it Stayed for the Following Year. At the End of 1982 Nme Readers Voted it Among the Best Albums of the Year.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars cocteaus in their baby stage.......2006-10-13

The cocteaus have proven to be one of the most innovative bands in the world. With that said, garlands was like the seed planted of what was to come in their career. This album can only be described as, dark, damp, menacing, and droning. Which makes it no less wonderful as their future releases. Garlands definatley stands in a category all alone, because it is so different than what would become their "etheriel" sound. If you are a true fan of the cocteaus, you will give this one a chance. It isnt as accessable as their latest efforts, but no less fascinating.

1 out of 5 stars Where are the Peel Sessions?.......2006-10-01

I don't understand why they didn't include the 6 extra John Peel Sessions that appeared on the original UK CD.

5 out of 5 stars In Defense..........2006-07-27

I have been a passionate listener of Cocteau Twins for longer than seems possible, and until I looked up Amazon in order to replace my copy of Garlands (mine being rode hard and put up wet)I had no idea that this album was unpopular or considered to be a poor representation of the band's work. I am startled by these reviews; certainly Garlands is not, what? Milk & Kisses? But why should it be? Turgid and dissonant, dreamy and atmospheric, it is the perfect and neccesary foil to their later work.

4 out of 5 stars Angry Cocteau Twins, if possible.......2005-12-30

I really like this album. However, out of the remasters, this was my last purchase. This is probably my least favourite of the 4AD releases (Including Blue Bell Knoll and Heaven or Las Vegas). Some things that should be pointed out are the wonderful vocal techniques that are unique on this album. You cannot find certain sounds on any of their other releases. Elizabeth Fraser is a wonderful vocalist, despite the fact that we rarely understand what she is singing about. I like to think of her voice as an instrument rather than an actual voice. I would suggest buying a later album, such as "Treasure" or "Blue Bell Knoll"

Standout tracks are: Blood Bitch, Blind Dumb Deaf, and Grail Overfloweth.

2 out of 5 stars The album is excellent, the remaster is crap.......2005-12-19

Please note that this is a comment of the REMASTERING job of this CD. The original always had a very dry, cold sound that fit the music very very well. I know that Guthrie is not a fan of his earlier albums, and on all 3 early records (this one, Head Over Heels, and Treasure) he seems to have run with the technology available to re-create instead of just simply remaster. The CD suffers because of this. Whereas the original Garlands was appropriately flat - this one sounds like the album was recorded in a tin can. I'm very glad I held onto my original import edition of this - which also is sadly out of print due to this monstrosity. (Two of the bonus tracks, first issued on a flexidisc, on the original import have been axed, and do not appear on anything else) ... Keep your old Capitol or (old) 4AD editions ... or get the vinyl. Just upsetting.

    3 out of 5 stars Yup, it's a single.......2002-10-31

It's a good little single to listen to, but there are only three tracks on it so one can't really get into it for long.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for 'Trance' and 'Progressive House' DJs.......2001-02-06

I am, of course, referring to the vinyl version of this release. If you are familiar with the album version than you need to know that these mixes are quite different. They have a few of the same chords but for the most part it is a new experience. But I am sure that anyone who wound up on this page is familiar with singles in the electronic world. You can almost always count on getting more that you bargain for.

Moby has been around for quite some time now. You might not realize that from his sudden thrust into the spotlight. He has been making electronic music for over a decade now and this shows how experience can pay off. The smooth samples with a trance beat and a soft melody is not easy to pull off. But Moby always seems to find the right talent to remix his music and add to the overall experience. This is no exception. Check out some of his older releases and you will understand my point. (I.e. "feeling so real") Moby has repeatedly proven his versatility and it is hard sometimes to know what to expect from him. I have been through this dilemma a number of times personally. Even though Moby himself did not remix all of the tracks you can be rest assured they are of a high caliber.

I have spun the Vinyl equivalent of this disc on a number of occasions and it is becoming something of a crowd favorite. It is a great way to put a little transition into a primarily hard set. Club crowds, believe it or not, like a little variety form time to time. I would not recommend 'part one' as readily as this release but they are both well worth having even if you are not a die-hard Moby fan.

But don't just take my word for it. Check it out for yourself and post what you think. What do I know anyway?

4 out of 5 stars In my dreams I'm jealous all the time..........2000-09-28

The review below is mostly on target, although I will add that it will take a few hearings before the remixes start growing on you. There are no vocals, which makes a big difference if you like that part of the song. The Clubbed to Death mix is the gem here, when I listen to the original Porcelain I sometimes wish it had some of the harder and darker elements in the Clubbed remix. Is this CD worth it? Well, if you have been listening to Moby non-stop for weeks at a time like I have, then yes, go make the purchase. Can't wait to see Moby live in NYC late October 2000...

4 out of 5 stars Remix CD of "Porcelain".......2000-07-05

This cd single contains three remixes of Moby's brillant "Porcelain" off his cd "Play." 1. Clubbed to Death Version by Rob Dougan 6:36 2. Futureshock Instrumental 8:18 3. Torsten Stenzel's Edited Remix 4:50 The first mix is a very brillant mix that starts out like the original, but then brings in a harder beat which gives it a darker quality than the original version. About 3 minutes into the mix, it goes into an experimental electronic phase that takes the piano line and interweaves it with synthesizer parts that are truly beautiful. It also throws in some scratches to give it a little bit of a Massive Attack feel. Truly a great mix. The second mix has more of a house feel to it. It has a sample of "I never meant to hurt you" flowing through the mix which intertwines with the tribal influenced beat that keeps this mix going. It really kicks into gear when the loop from the original that opens the song is synthesized with a harder edge and wraps around the beats. Very good. The third mix is more in the vein of trance. It starts out with the piano part from the original and slowly goes into a BT-influenced synth arrangement. The piano part is sampled throughout balancing the synthesizer which creates a darkness to it. The only problem with this mix is that it's too short. When you're finally melting into the mood it's creating, it's over. I didn't give this a full five stars since none of the mixes use the beautiful lyrics of the original. Number two samples one line, but that's it. They are still worth having, especially the first mix which is incredible. This is the end of my review, "So this is goodbye."

5 out of 5 stars One of the best "U2" singles ever.......2003-03-28

People either seem to think this is the best U2 song ever or hate it as a U2 song, even though it really isn't U2 to begin with. However, this single is a lot more U2 than the album itself is, so I thought I'd comment anyway.

Starting with Miss Sarajevo, this song is fantastic even if it is not typical U2. As has been mentioned the combination of Pavarotti and U2 is a match made in heaven. I have always been amazed in how well Bono's voice and the group complement other vocalists, and this is no exception. The only drawback on this particular disc is that Pavarotti's part is cut short in this slightly edited version (as compared to the full album).

The jewel of this disc though is not the single itself but the live version of One. Here we are treated to One in an elegant vocal style that is far superior to the original album version. The audience singing along actually complements the song rather than detract as is often the case in live recordings. The biggest plus here is the full orchestral accompanyment and the addition of Brian Eno singing along. The final product is a recording of One that is full of texture and elevates the song to a level worthy of its greatness.

Bottoms: This is actually an instrumental remix of Zoo Station that I find fantastic. I am not normally a fan of remixes, but this is tasteful and done in the spirit of the whole Passengers project, though it is still a bit dancy. I find it fun to "sing" along to this mix, and you will find the tempo is actually a bit faster and more upbeat in a subtle way.

Viva Davidoff: This is the only track that does not have a hint of U2. It is really weird. Even weirder than the weirdest stuff on the Passengers album. I find this one track impossible to listen to almost. It is more abstract than ambiant, and it seems like it is a bit much even if for an Eno song. Yet, the first three tracks more than make up for this one, and I still give the single 5 starts. It is definitely better than most U2 singles since.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best ever.......2002-03-21

Although I usually only listen to the first two tracks, this is probably the best U2 investment I ever made. I agree with all of the others who said that the live version of "One" on this record is phenominal and the duet with Pavoratti is haunting but brilliant. If you love U2 and want something truely rare then do yourself a favor and pick this up.

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing all-time favorite.......2000-10-27

I heard a cut on the radio a few years ago, and went to considerable effort to find out WHO did this incredible piece. I knew it was U2, but didn't know it wasn't done under their "label."

Of my 400+ CDs (doesn't include the 700+ LPs), this could just be my all-time favorite. It is ALWAYS played at maximum volume; I just can't help it!

Luciano Pavarotti is amazing as only he can be, but the COMBINATION of his incredible voice, the intensity of the music of U2, and the way they work together is something that truly deserves the word AWESOME. It gives me chills every time I hear it.

I was surprised to find it here on Amazon, after having such a hard time tracking it down before!

Hm. Guess I need to go hear it yet again!

5 out of 5 stars war child ..........2000-07-31

I will be honest with you. When I first heard "Miss Sarajevo" I wasn't really impressed. It's not really a U2 song at all. The lyrics sound as if they were written in a short amount of time, which I wouldn't be surprised (Passengers was made in about 6 months). BUT, after I heard the live version at Sarajevo. I was totally blown away. If anyone has ever heard the Sarajevo POPmart it is undoubtingly the most emotional concert of the Popmart tour. The live version of "One" has to be the best I've ever heard. It was recorded at WarChild with just Bono, Edge, and Eno with a full orchastra behind 'em. Probably one of Bono's best vocal performances. The 2 unreleased Passenger tracks "Bottoms" and "Viva Davidoff" have Eno written all over them. Not so sure about "Bottoms" (just an instrumental remix of Zoo Station) but "Viva Davidoff" is very pretty and atmostpheric. I know whoever buys this, it will probably just be for the live version of "One", but make no mistake about it. This single is a beautiful piece of work.

      Album Description

European double-dual Disc pressing of their fifth studio album features the 11-track album on the first disc with the DVD side featuring all of the songs in DVD-A. The second disc features remixes of all album tracks on both the audio and DVD side. 44 tracks in all. Sony. 2005. * Please note you will need an All Code DVD player to hear the DVD-A side selections.

5 out of 5 stars Best Hooverphonic album yet.......2007-05-02

Just a fan, but I do adore this album. It's bombastic without being clunky, beautifully composed, and brings out every strength Hooverphonic has. "Dirty Lenses" and "Wake Up" are familiar evocative, fast pieces. "Ginger" is thoughtful and sad. I absolutely love "We All Float" for the great instrumentation that really sells the whimsical, nostalgic feel to it. I like albums I can drive to, and the video for "Wake Up" embodies exactly the feel I get from the song. Just a beautiful album, and I'm so thrilled to have it after a deviation from my personal tastes with most of Jackie Cane.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking Audio Experience!.......2007-02-04

I have always been a fan of Hooverphonic, but have enjoyed their music less and less with each release. I wasn't happy with their move away from the trip-hop electronica they started with, but have found mild enjoyment in their following albums nonetheless. With No More Sweet Music, a release I took a chance on by purchasing the $50 dual-disc import, my love for Hooverphonic has returned.

In this age of internet music stores, I'm sure I'm not alone in my shift to purchasing fewer and fewer actual CDs... why bother buying the CD when all I'm going to do is rip it to an iPod? iTunes has been a great convenience in this aspect. As a result, the growth of my CD collection has all but ground to a halt, despite my longing for the tactile experience of holding the CD in my hands and paging through the lyrics booklet.

However, if we were all very, very lucky, this Hooverphonic disc could be at the head of a line of many such releases. No More Sweet Music could not be a greater gift to a music lover - not one, but TWO albums of music, one being a remix of the other. In addition, each of the two albums in 5.1 surround on DVD. And to top it off, four music videos and a making-of documentary. A complete audio experience, and an absolute dream for any Hooverphonic fan.

Even more importantly, a must for any audiophile, fan of Hooverphonic or not. The music on this album is very accessible, and beyond that, ABSOLUTELY JAW-DROPPING in 5.1 surround. I have demoed the music for a wide variety of people, none of which were Hooverphonic fans before listening to this album, and all have expressed awe at the experience. Hooverphonic created this album with this experience in mind, and it's obvious. Songs like "We All Float" are pleasant enough when heard on a CD, but literally wrap around you when heard on a proper 5.1 setup. I heard one of the tracks on my iPod while commuting the other day, and found myself longing to be at home in front of the DVD player to hear it all around me.

While SACD failed to take off and is not compatible with every DVD player, the tracks on this disc should be playable on any DVD player, as it is recorded as a standard DVD movie. While the tracks play, a photo image appears on the TV, so as not to distract with moving video. I believe the details on the Amazon listing state that you need an all-region player to listen to the DVD audio, but I have an XBOX 360 with a Region 1 DVD player inside and it played without a problem. I could not offer up a single complaint about the entire experience, except to say that it has raised my expectations of new music to an almost unrealistic level.

I could not recommend it more. If you have a proper 5.1 setup and are a fan of audio, the $50 spent on this dual-disc release could not be better spent. An instant addition to any must-have list.

      4 out of 5 stars It's your choice . . . .......2006-03-10

I liked this album when I listened to it because there are two different versions. Whaaaaa?!? you might say. Yes two different versions. The first version is more of an instrumental and mellow album. The songs are really quite beautiful. The second version is more of a pop driven album, which is pretty good too. I'm not going to compare this album with prior work done by Hooverphonic, because it stands alone in my mind.
If you get the dual disc version, there is also a 5.1 suround sound to listen to, as well as a DVD of a mini documentary/interview of the band. It was great to watch because it gives an insight to the artists viewpoint about the album. Don't forget to turn on the English subtitles because they were speaking Dutch (I think it was Dutch).

      4 out of 5 stars They're Back..........2005-12-10

And by "back", I mean the creative genius behind "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular" sound is raging for all to hear. Several years ago, I wrote a scathing review of "The Magnificent Tree", which was a very odd direction for Hooverphonic. The lounge singer-like vocals from Geike Annart were a departure from the halcyon style that originated with Liesje Sadonius. You could hear the beginnings of the band's transformation with their second album.

Whatever chip that had malfunctioned in Alex Callier's head has been fixed. Their sound is much more contemporary and not trying so hard to emulate various styles. The first disc is a bit more like the Magnificent Tree: sultry, orchestral, slow and deliberate. The big difference is that it doesn't sound so kitschy and constrained by the predictable organic palette of instruments on Magnificent Tree.

A few gems on Disc One:
Dirty Lenses has a nice driving feel with a full sound. It reminds me of Lung on "Blue Wonder Power Milk" with Battersea's wide open ambient synths.

You Hurt Me has a pretty neat driving beat and piano/harpsichord accompaniment. It almost sounds like Fiona Apple singing, but the instrumentals are much more rich.

Music Box is a nice relaxed progression and is overall, a pleasant and cool song.

My Child is a very cool song. The analog synths are fat and wide. A nice glissando on the synth makes it pretty disjointed.

Ginger is a nice way to close out the album.

As for Disc Two, it's a completely different production. And I have to say that I like this "album" much better. A lot more creativity involved with each track. There is more effects processing and the instrumentals are allowed to breath.

One thing's for sure, with two very distinct discs: Disc One being radio-friendly for the masses and Disc Two for the cool electronic/downtempo crowd, Hooverphonic will be able to please much more people this time around. Welcome back to my music library.

      5 out of 5 stars Almost speechless.......2005-12-02

I have been a fan of Hooverphonic since the first time I heard "Battersea" back when I was in high school. From that point on, it has been a steady progression of purchases so that I might complete their collection. With this album, (imported early!) I have now finished their current musical career. But is it as good?

This version of the album (Dual Disc) is very interesting indeed. It was known a long time in advance that they would be doing a sort of "double album" in which they would have the standard Hooverphonic-style music and another version, a sort of remixed version of the album. Let me start by saying that the samples found on the official website do not do these songs justice!

The passion, tone, and sometimes fury of the tone and lyrics on these songs is fantastic! "You Love Me To Death," "You Hurt Me," "No More Sweet Music," "Wake Up," and "Ginger" are fantastic tracks with great vocals provided by Hooverphonic's beautiful Geike Arnaert, who is never off. Once she starts singing, this album really takes off and doesn't end until its over!

The remix version offers some fun and different takes to the normal songs. While some of them are rather uninteresting (i.e. "We All Float"), some offer very different and almost better styles (i.e. "Heartbeat").

Then you have the DVD features. The DVD sound quality of the album (each DVD side has the entire album in DVD format) is fantastic. I listen to that more than the standard one! Then you have the music videos which are nice but the differences between the normal and remixed versions are too few to make watching them all at the same time something of value.

Then you have the short documentary which is fantastic! Seeing and learning about how these guys work on their stuff is great. Learning about them, about the songs, and just seeing them do something aside from sing and play music is a real treat.

Is all of the bonus stuff worth the extra money? I wouldn't say so unless, like me, you're a huge fan of the group. If you are, I wouldn't tell you to get anything but this one. Remember, though, that Dual Discs are thicker and heavier than normal CDs/DVDs, so watch out what you put it in!

Overall, I'm still sinking into this album (weeks later) but I'm fairly sure that if it isn't the best, it is at least my favorite.

But this purchase is NOT for first-time listeners. Try "Blue Wonder Power Milk" or "Magnificent Tree", first!
