Album Description

European edition includes a different tracklisting to both the US standard and limited edition pressing! This 14-track import features three tracks not featured on either of the US pressings, 'Human Fly' (originally by The Cramps), 'Escape Myself' (The Sound) and 'Waves' (Blancmange). Sophomore album, following 2004's self-titled release, from French duo who cover 80s new wave and new romantic songs ina loungecore/tropicalia style. Self-consciously arty and ironic - their name references the 60s French "new wave" of cinema and the album is named for the cult film ('Band Of Outsiders') by Jean-Luc Godard - their gimmick has nonetheless made them one of the Peacefrog label's biggest sellers. Other highlights include, 'The Killing Moon' (Echo and the Bunnymen), 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' (Bauhaus), 'Blue Monday' (New Order) and many more! Peacefrog. 2006.

4 out of 5 stars Whether you know the songs already, or not, this is a nice spin.......2007-06-02

I am familiar with about 95% of the original songs on this album, so I went into listening to this with the usual scepticism. Turns out though, this album both pays homage to the originals, yet makes them their own. The actual music on this recording is extremely well played/recorded & you can hear all of the little nuances. Sometimes the singing & the music get a little washed out by their use of ambient noises, but all in all, it a well done album.

I saw one reviewer saying all his female friends like it & I can see why it would be considered more of a "chick" album, but I think their are enough guys who can relate to the original (mostly from the 80s) songs & appreciate this album. It's not for everyone. I am the first to admit that it can grate on my nerves sometime in the fluffy washy kind of way the voice sings, but that's why I have so much music to choose from.

In general though, I am glad I got a random point in this direction.

5 out of 5 stars Catchy!.......2007-04-10

I'm one of the listeners who isn't totally familiar with most of the 70s/80s originals ... and maybe because of that I really find that this album stands alone. The 'Nouvelle Vague' style given to all of these covers is intriguing and definitely catchy. Those who like bossa nova and the new soft-voiced European style should check into this album. The vocals unexpectedly drew me in and captured me after several listens ... but the instrumentation is excellent. Relaxing. Two tracks - 'Dance With Me' and 'O Pamela' - stand out in this album, both for their bittersweet intrigue. After listening to the album several times through, though, it was 'Ever Fallen in Love' and 'Escape Myself' that really stuck in my head ... so that later on I'd find myself humming different parts from these two ... and then have to listen to them again just to get them right. Bande a Part is standalone ... but I myself bought it with Nouvelle Vague's self-titled cd, so I feel that these two really go hand-in-hand, with the consistent style. Both are definitely keepers -- I can listen to them over and over regularly, and haven't tired of them yet.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music!.......2007-03-17

A very different spin on old songs. Very soothing voices and background sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Great Chilling Music.......2007-02-21

Listen to this music at late night, and it will relax you. Love it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-09

All my female friends who come over to me and have the chance to listen to this album ask me to copy it for them (or to be politically correct: lend it to them...). What could be a better review than this??? So go and see for yourself!

4 out of 5 stars Missing too many essential tracks.......2007-05-20

Overall this is a fine introduction to Collin Raye's work, but it is missing the hits "On The Verge", "What If Jesus Came Back LIke That" and " I Can Still Feel You", along with the key album tracks "I Volunteer" and "Dark Secrets/ The Eleventh Commandment". Perhaps these songs will be included on "The Essential Collin Raye" if it is ever released.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-03-14

I love Collin Raye and this CD contains all of his hits! He is such a great singer/songwriter. I can't wait until he comes out with more music. The CD arrived pretty quickly through standard shipping and was in good condition upon receipt. No problems!

5 out of 5 stars Thinking about his eight-year-old daughter.......2005-08-19

There are several compilations of Collin's music to choose from but I believe this was the first. It contains ten tracks drawn from his first four albums together with four bonus tracks recorded specially for inclusion in the set. Collin had over twenty top ten country hits during his time recording for Epic. I don't think there is any compilation yet available that includes them all but this one provides a wonderful introduction to his music.

Only one track (Love, me) is taken from Collin's debut album (All I can be) while just two (In this life, That was a river) are from the follow-up (In this life). Four tracks (That's my story, My kind of girl, Little Rock, If I were you) come from Collin's third album (Extremes) and three tracks (I think about you, Not that different, One boy one girl) are taken from the fourth and most recent album represented here (I think about you). It is worth noting that Collin recorded two completely different songs titled If I were you - the other one can be found on his debut album.

The outstanding song here is I think about you - not a love song as the title might suggest, but an ode to Collin's eight-year-old daughter in which he wonders how her life might develop. Collin ponders various situations from celebrity status to being a victim of domestic violence and sings that whenever he sees a woman, he thinks of his daughter. It is a very touching, thought-provoking song. The set opens with Little Rock, a song about attempting to recover from alcoholism. Collin gets a bit rowdy on a couple of songs (That's my story, My kind of girl) but mainly sticks to the ballads that suit him best. Elsewhere, the album is filled with romantic love songs, which Collin excels at.

Collin mainly recorded original material but his first four albums included covers of Big river, Dreaming my dreams with you and Let it be me. None of those made it to this compilation but one of the four bonus tracks is a cover of Open arms. Originally recorded by Journey, Collin makes a fine job of it but I still prefer the version by the Burch sisters, a country trio who recorded one album (which I've reviewed) before returning to the obscurity from whence they came.

This is a great compilation of music by one of the leading country music stars of the early nineties.

5 out of 5 stars Collin Raye...The One of the most underrated music stars around.......2005-08-17

Simply put, if you love ballads You will love Collin Rayes music, This album is a MUST have for music lovers, Country Music fans and people that just like good music.
Their is not one single bad song on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughts from a Hip Hop Head.......2004-06-26

The music in my world mostly revolves around hip-hop, R&B, and Jazz. I went through my little "punk-rock" phase in the '80s but country I shunned like the dickens, being way "too cool" for that.

A friend of mine gave me a ride home from work about ten years or so ago and the song "Love,Me" came on. Poor thing, she was being kind of enough to give me a ride home, she didn't expect to have to pull over and find tissues.

I'd been a closet country listner ever since. It's one of those things I hide from all of my friends (it's a country thing and they wouldn't understand). But this cd is going to get played over and over and over again in my car, and I don't care who hears it. I'll just have to make sure I have plenty of tissues again when "Love,Me" comes on.

If you see the black girl in hip hop gear with braids bobbing her head to Collin Raye, say a how-do, because you'll know it's me.

CD was fine -- I bought it for a gift.

5 out of 5 stars What A Great CD!!!.......2007-01-04

Collin Raye is an exceptional singer! He has a mellow voice that touches your heart. He sings a lot of "story songs" - every song on this CD is a winner!

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2006-06-02

This album showcases Collin Raye's amazing tenor to the fullest. Hits like "Love Me," "Little Rock," "My Kind of Girl," "Not That Different," and "I Can Still Feel You" are featured on this brilliant album. Raye's vocals are well done, as is the song selection. Most of the songs are ballads, Raye's specialty. If you are a fan of Collin Raye, then this album is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Replaces DIRECT HITS as the strongest Collin Raye collection.......2004-01-27

With an angelic tenor voice, it is probably unavoidable that Collin Raye would emphasize love songs on all of his albums. But as this "best of" makes quite clear on number like his breakthrough hit "Love, Me" and the poignant "In This Life," that isn't necessarily a bad thing. No other man in country is better at crooning about love than Raye. This set also contains some of Raye's rowdier smashes ("That's My Story," "Little Red Rodeo," "My Kind Of Girl") amidst the sentiment for much needed balance. Additionally, Raye has proven adept at messages songs like "Little Rock" (alcoholism) and "I Think About You" (domestic violence) that rank among the most substantial recordings put out in the country genre during the '90s.

I rate 16 BIGGEST HITS as the strongest Raye retrospective - stronger even than DIRECT HITS - for a number of reasons. It includes two more tracks for starters. Every single here was also a top 10 hit, whereas a few recordings on DIRECT HITS like "The Gift" and "Open Arms," while great, did not even crack the top 30. This collection also includes hits throughout Raye's tenure at Sony, including such gems as "I Can Still Feel You," "Couldn't Last A Moment," and "Someone You Used To Know" which came out after DIRECT HITS in 1997. Finally, this cd includes my favorite uptempo Raye hit "On The Verge," a # 2 smash inexplicably left off DIRECT HITS even though it predated that set. So, if you haven't already, get this disc today!

3 out of 5 stars Yeah.......2003-01-17

Ok, I got this ablum to add up to my collection. I wanted to have all his cd's, and this one and (SuperHits) were a total. I mean come on, you can't do this to a man who created so many great hits. If you do plan to get ONE greatest hits then get DIRECT HITS, it come with a multimedia videos and audios. Only get this record if you can find it less than 10.00.

Album Description

In 2005, the French duo's eponymous debut introduced their singular take on post-punk nuggets by the likes of Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Tuxedo Moon, and The Undertones, recasting them as svelte, sophisticated bossa nova-inflected chansons. This follow-up is a beguiling, retro-futurist odyssey, containing covers of Echo And The Bunnymen, The Buzzcocks, Lords Of The New Church, Billy Idol, U2, Blondie, New Order, The Cramps, Bauhaus, The Smiths, and more. "...a beautiful, melancholy exercise in deconstructing familiar songs and reassembling trace amounts of the melodies into fresh music" - Boston Globe. "Fresh (and refreshing) takes on these classics...The songs are so wildly different in their dreamy form that they stand on their own" - Flaunt. The limited edition includes a special o-card highlighting the three bonus tracks: "Moody" (ESG), "Sweet And Tender Hooligan" (The Smiths), and "Blue Monday" (New Order).

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing follow up to first album.......2007-06-07

I am so in love with their first album, in fact it is one of the favorite cd's I own! I can't get enough of their first album, but I recently purchased this Bande A Part and was really disappointed! I really haven't listened to it that much, it just didn't capture my attention as their first album did. Now I don't know if I want to buy their latest cd or not.

4 out of 5 stars Best if you know the originals?.......2006-09-28

I'm not entirely sure what listeners who aren't familiar with most of the original versions will get out of this album. As someone who went through punk, new wave, new romantic, goth and indie-kid phases in the late 70's/early 80's but who now listens to lounge, bossa, dub and nu-jazz I'm surely part of a very small group to whom Nouvelle Vague's work is perfectly pitched.
The standouts for me are the sublime opening track and a kittenish reworking of Human Fly. Some of the other covers work less well, including a way-too-respectful attempt at Pride. Potential buyers should also be warned that there several different editions of this CD aimed at various international markets. Check the tracklistings before buying
Never thought I'd ever again listen to Bela Lugosi's Dead by choice...

4 out of 5 stars Post-post Modern Re-envisions.......2006-09-21

Not the same "wow" as the first album (as it came out of left field), but definitely not a victim of the sophomore jinx either. In regards the song selections, Punk Music had its time & place, and to hear these songs (which probably are familiary anyone who has listened to popular music from the early 80s onward) done differently is interesting, worthy of any true music fans attention (I would have loved to hear Nouvelle Vague do a version of The Clash's "Rock The Cassbah."

Nouvelle Vague's artistic angle reminds me of jazz, in that the "studio" or album version was just the blueprint, the springboard, and what the musicians do on stage can be markedly different. So-called pop music (whether it's punk, hiphop, bubblegum, ska, classic rock) could all be reinterpretted (like this straight raggae disc of Police songs that I heard -- it's those lyrics, but done with a Trenchtown groove) -- and anyone who tells you it can't or it shouldn't is being closed minded.

And speakig of Sting, he does a lot of reinterpreting of his music (like on his Bring on the Night CD or the MTV Unplugged session) -- it makes it that much richer. Remember so-called symphonic classical music was improvised upon in its day.

4 out of 5 stars great follow up.......2006-09-15

I could not disagree more with the previous review. Although the first ablum is probably stronger, the second is a great follow up. Most people just don't get this band. I saw em last Friday in LA, and I will never view "to drunk to F*ck" the same way again. Moreover for the live preformances, the songs were tricked out different from the album recordings. I grew up with these songs to, and love these versions. If it was not for KCRW I would have never heard of this band, somehow, I don't think that KCRW is known for playing bands that stink.

1 out of 5 stars I have only listened to the samples but...........2006-09-13

Sorry but I have only listened to the samples of the tracks, courtesy of Amazon. BUT I grew up on these songs. If you listen to the originals, there is such diversity in style, in sound. However here everything is one-dimensional. If you have heard their version of "Fade to Grey" you know how "Human Fly" is going to sound, even though the originals are POLES apart.

It sounds like one song repeated ad infinitum, with different lyrics. I apologise to those that like this; I am sorry if you think that listening to the samples is not sufficient to give an informed opinion. If you want to sleep, BUY THIS.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome as Always.......2007-03-10

After listening to Collin Raye's Fearless CD I can certainly understand why his career has endured so long. Whether he's doing an original song or a remake he does it with style and sincerity. Every original song on this CD is standout Collin. The remakes, My Way (which was definitely done his way - and very well!!!) and The House of the Rising Sun (not one of my most favorite songs when it was originally released) are both creditable versions of the originals. I am anxiously looking forward to his next release.

4 out of 5 stars Collin Raye is Fearless.......2007-02-04

At first review, I heard a "new" Collin Raye - a new style, more of the serious musician. There's almost a flavor of days gone by with a new twist. The more I listen, the more it grows on me. It's still Collin Raye on the leading edge, not following in anyone's shadow. "Too Hot to Sleep" is a more traditional Collin sound and his rendition of "House of the Rising Sun" portrays his vocal versatility well. I haven't been able to pick a favorite yet on this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Always Superb.......2006-03-19

The songs that Collin Raye chooses to record are ones that every human being can relate to. Words that turn into personal messages that only the listener can truly interpret. His voice is easy to listen to and his music is never disappointing. My personal favorite on this CD is "We'll Be Alright." There's a message in that one for EVERYONE no matter what circumstance surrounds them.

3 out of 5 stars Twenty Years & Change.......2006-03-11

There are several songs that almost feel like he's going back to his beginnings, and I enjoyed hearing those songs. I also like to hear how he's evolved over his career and I miss seeing him in concert to see him perform these songs live. I really enjoyed his take on some of the older songs on the album, he has a unique take on them and I it was quite entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Big Collin Ray fan.......2006-02-25

I've missed Collin's music. I thought the cd was good but wish it had more ballads which is where I think he shines. I hope it's a good seller so we get more!

4 out of 5 stars Hated it first, loving it now........2006-02-09

I am a great fan of Collin. The first songs I heard from him was Love Me. Since then I listened to every album and I like his talent to produce a great ballad with amazing lyrics.

Last week I received the cd and put it in my car radio and started to listen. I found myself skipping tracks to find the 'well known' ballads, and was disappointed to find only track 3 that comes close to 'In my life'. After all 12 tracks I was hugely disappointed and throwed the cd on the backseat.

A few days later I realized that I was thinking about some songs in my mind. Strangely enough the cd caught my curiosity and it went back in the cdplayer and played it at least 3 times a day since then.

This cd is something different and is very addictive. Raye has produced a good album again. Give every song a chance and you will be surprised by some of them.

A Collin Raye fan.

I have enjoyed Collin Raye since the first time I heard him. His songs are simple and yet they have a way of touching my heart with the different emotions they evoke. This has always been one of my favorite albums by him. I have used these songs at work, and have had requests to sing Love Remains at weddings and receptions. Collin Raye's is not just for women though as witnessed at a concert here in Wendover. He had more requests from the men in the audience than the women. Across the board Collin Raye is top notch.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-02-15

This is one of his better albums... "Not That Different" is definitely one of his best. The song is not only touching, but a social statement, and if you've seen the video, it's very heartwarming. It's probably not the most pure country you can find, but if you're into the modern country-pop style music, this is a pretty good album. A couple of his ballads are definitely relaxing and soothing.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD ALBUM, EXCEPT FOR WHAT IF JESUS COMES BACK.......2005-02-08

I REALLY ENJOY COLLIN RAYE'S MUSIC AND THIS CD HAS SOME GREAT SONGS. I LOVE ON THE VERGE, AND WHEN I THINK ABOUT YOU.
THE SONG WHAT IF JESUS COMES BACK HAS JUST MISSED THE MARK!
FOR ONE, THE WAY HE PORTRAYS THE RETURN OF JESUS IS NOT SCRIPTUAL! HE'S NOT COMING BACK REINCARNIATED INTO A DRUG ADDICTED BABY, SORRY. HE'S COMING BACK EITHER AS YOUR KING TO REIGN OR AS YOUR JUDGE, THAT'S A PERSONAL CHOICE. I JUST DONT APPRECIATE THE WAY COLLIN'S LYRICS GO, IT PUTS JESUS/WHO IS GOD ON OUR LEVEL, WHICH HE IS NOT!! WHEN HE WAS ON THIS EARTH HE LIVED A SINLESS LIFE, AND I THINK THIS SONG IS VERY DISRESPECTFUL OF WHAT CHRIST DID FOR ALL MANKIND!

5 out of 5 stars Another gem from Collin.......2001-08-25

This is another great one from Collin. It includes some of his best work, including two of my favorites, "Not That Different" and the title track. The wonderful thing about this CD is how emotional and felt each song is. There is meaning in every verse. This CD is a great one to add to your collection, whether or not you have any other Collin CD's, you should definitely consider this one.

5 out of 5 stars A soul-touching album.......2001-02-06

This album is full of songs that touch the heart and soul. There's more than one on here that can bring tears to my eyes. Anyone who has a little daughter can relate to the title track. It's a sad statement on the way things are. "What if Jesus comes back like that" is a song that should get people thinking about those less fortunate than themselves. "One boy, One girl" is a beautiful tale of love. Country music has a way of speaking to one's heart and for telling life's stories, and this album is one of the best to do that.

5 out of 5 stars Close to classic country.......2006-02-27

Excellent band. Collin Raye sings the type of music I grew up with

4 out of 5 stars Nice stuff with plenty of twang.......2005-04-07

For "true country" fans, this is the Collin Raye album to shoot for... His 1991 debut featured plenty of nice, simple, melodic country songs, thankfully lacking the pretentious soft-pop sound that would later bury his talent (and that of so many other contemporary Nashville stars).

If you like twang, this is his best album.

5 out of 5 stars A VERY GOOD SINGER.......2000-11-08

But It Was His Second Single "Love, Me" That Made Him Into A Superstar. It Became His First Number 1 Hit. People Play It At Funerals. "Every Second" His Third Single Off The Album Became His Second Top Ten Hit.

5 out of 5 stars Collin's first CD April 12, 2000.......2000-04-12

This was Collin's first CD, released in 1991. If you don't have Collin in your collection, this is a great way to start. You will be hooked and want the others as well. I was hooked when I first heard "One Boy, One Girl"(from the I Think About You album), and I am never letting go. I now own all of his CDs to date. As soon as you hear this you will want the others as well. He co-wrote one of the songs on this album called "Blue Magic." Great work Collin on your first CD. Thanks for touching my heart with your music.

4 out of 5 stars Great ablum.......2003-01-17

I only bought this ablum because I am a die-hard Collin Raye fan. True, his ballads are remarkable, but come on just buy his Direct Hit and you get his greatest songs.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Raye.......2001-04-09

An entire cd of Collin Raye's best ballads should be added to every fan's collection. It doesn't matter that you might have all of these songs except one on other cd's, what does matter is flow of these songs and the mood the cd creates. Classic Collin, beautiful love songs, emotionally moving ballads, what's not to love! In my option, "Survivors" from The Wall Came Down cd and "And I Love You So" Don McClean's classic are the highlights of this cd. Collin Raye has never dissappointed his fans before and is not about to start now.

4 out of 5 stars Great songs but still a rip-off.......2000-09-28

Compilation CDs are rip-offs for diehard fans or even fans with a few of the artist's CDs. This CD is no exceptional. The songs all have been released before except for one new song. But being Raye's big fan, I have to buy this CD.

The only new song here is the Don McClean's classic "And I Love You So." This track is solely produced by Raye himself. Unfortunately Raye delivers an ordinary version of this ballad backed by gentle guitars. The arrangement of the song is safe rather than adventurous. However, Raye's heartfelt vocals make up for the lack of originality in its production.

The rest of the songs here have all been found on Raye's previous releases. But I must applaud Epic for not just choosing the hits. Well chosen album cuts are represented here including the old Waylon Jennings classic "Dreaming My Dreams with You." "All My Roads," a track from Raye's "The Walls Came Down," is another excellent choice. The song starts off softly but builds up to a crescendo allowing Raye to showcase his strong and high tenor vocals.

"I Volunteer" is my favorite song from this CD. It's one of the best songs about self-sacrifice ever written. While perennial favourites like the semi-religious "The Gift" and Raye's big hit "In This Life" are also included.

A good collection of love songs where the theme of forever love is well explored.

5 out of 5 stars good album but took time to like it as a whole.......2005-10-14

i heard song #2 "Prancing" on Walcotts compilation called "Works" and i loved it so much i had to get this album, But in 94 it wasnt availible in the USA (took 6 months to get it from Japan). Was it worth it? yes

At first i was sad that the whole album wasnt the same fast and minimal Drum and Bass groove I was expecting (like prancing), but later i started really enjoying the Gateway trios work mixed with Walcotts Eastern percussion/sitar. Sadly Collin died in 84 and how i wish his work could have continued.

i recomend this album over the others for its groove. I tried Codona, it was not to my liking at all. Its the combo of Gateways groove (Dejohnette, Holland and Abercrombie) and walcotts eastern contribution that made this album so amazing to me. You should probably check out the "Gateway" albums if you end up loving this album

5 out of 5 stars Walcott and the Getway.......2001-08-02

This is one of the great records of Manfred Eicher's ECM company. Walcott cut this groove right after Dejohnette, Holland and Abercrombie finished the first Getway album (another landmark of creative music and bullsblood jazzrock). I guess the guys kept riding the enlightened wave. The scitar sound transforms the solid rhythm session into a delightful flight through space and time. My favorite tunes: Margueritte, Scimitar, Eastern Song and Cloud Dance.

5 out of 5 stars Transcendant night-time music........1999-10-30

Simply put, each time this disc plays, it reveals something new to the listener. The meditative mood is ripped by the slicing of Abercrombie's guitar on Scimitar, but other than that, one floats through the atmosphere, somewhere between Manhattan and the Himalayan foothills, wrapped in the warm tones of this veteran group.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Exploration of East/West Sounds.......1999-06-21

This is one of the gems of the ECM catalog, and a must own for any fan of Oregon, Walcott's other work, or the incredible band on this CD: John Abercrombie, Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette. Walcott's sitar and Abercrombie's fluid, singing guitar dance and exchange ideas over one of the greatest rhythm sections in jazz. This isn't an airy fairy "world beat" record -- it's tight, lyrical, reflective music from four masters at the peak of their careers. It's a shame the late Walcott didn't record three more albums with this band. "Margueritte" and the title track are two of the most poignant melodies I know. Any fan of honest, exploratory, moody jazz should check this out.
