Mona Bone Jakon marked the beginning of the Cat Stevens we know and love, forming alongside Teaser & the Firecat and Tea for the Tillerman the creative heart of Stevens's oeuvre. Though previous releases showcased his sticky burr of a voice and flashes of his songwriting brilliance, it was on Mona Bone that Stevens became disillusioned enough with the music industry to write more deeply introspective and personal songs. It's interesting to note that his disavowal of the biz (wryly commented upon in the song "Pop Star") coincides with his increasing popularity. You can hear Stevens finding his distinctive voice and sound on the first few bars of "Lady D'Arbanville" in all its baroque, emotive glory. "I Think I See the Light" marks the beginning of Stevens's lyrical spiritual pursuits, and "Trouble" stands among the best tracks in his career. All in all, Mona Bone Jakon is a delight, and because it never achieved the Top 40 radio ubiquity of later albums, it sounds fresh and distinct. --Tod Nelson

Cat Stevens is a poet, and this is . . . great poetry. Its tender, angry, sublime, reaching, and even transcendent.
He's part angry young man, and all Seeker of Life's Meaning. These are the songs of a profound human being; take it when you find it, its rare, cheap imitations abound; this is the real thing.
This album is the kind of music I would like my son and daughter to grow up with, alongside the literature of Hermann Hesse, Somerset Maugham, and James Hilton.

Light As A Feather.......2005-07-08

When Cat Stevens got out of hospital (as the Brits say) in 1970, he had a catalog of songs that would stretch over 2 years and 3 albums. So why, I wondered, didn't he put all the best stuff on the first record? After all, most people would say Tea For the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat contained most of the Stevens classics. Then it occurred to me that a lot of this music had already appeared in the movie Harold and Maude, so there may have been an attempt to tie it in with the movie release. THEN it occurred to me that this isn't really inferior stuff, even though sometimes you don't notice its brilliance the way you should. The great songs here are Trouble, I Think I See The Light, Katmandu and maybe Pop Star. The others are very good. All the songs have a weightlessness to them that might cause you to overlook the worthiness of the album on the whole. So in a way, the whole is not as good as the sum of its parts. But it's definitely worth checking out.

i grew up hearing Cat Steven's amazing album, "Tea for the Tillerman" but i never really got into him until last year when my aunts boyfriend gave me a bunch or records and one happened to be "Tea for the Tillerman" i listened to it and relized what i had been hearing as a kid. It was one of the greatest albums of all time! Then i saw "Harold and Maude" which is my favorite movie, which features all Cat songs. i fell in love with his music. i went to a thrift store and found "Teaser and the fire cat" on vinyl. i liked it as well, though not as much as "Tea for the Tillerman." then the other day i bought "Mona Bone Jakon." i really like it, it is my 2nd favorite album of Cat's. but i do have one question:

WHAT DOES MONA BONE JAKON MEAN!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I don't even know where to start. Very much enjoy the whole collection. At the very start, Seal's rendition of "Mona Lisa Smile" is a stunner.

Macy Gray's "Santa Baby" almost rivals Eartha Kitt's. It's all good--great music to put on when you're in a vintage mood.

Smile in Warmth!.......2006-07-30

Relaxing and romantic music, this soundtrack sounds like something you would listen to in this sixties and seventies. Most soundtracks aren't like this which gives this soundtrack the "center stage" if you know what I mean. This soundtrack captures the warmth of the movie and is highly recommended!

Deliciously retro tunes from today's hottest stars.......2005-10-23

As someone who grew up on Sinatra, Lawrence Welk, and crooners, I love any and all modern covers of classic standards from the Great American Songbook, so when Mona Lisa Smile came along, I counted my blessings. Most of the fourteen songs on Mona Lisa Smile appear in the movie, either as background music (Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered, Celine Dion, Santa Baby, Macy Gray, Mona Lisa Smile, Seal) or as cameos (a sultry Tori Amos on Murder, He Says). Sir Elton John's contribution on The Heart of Every Girl appears as a music video on the DVD.

So how do the standards hold up to modernization? I found the "updating a classic" treatment of De-Lovely to be awful, so I was wary of Mona Lisa Smile's list of pop stars (Sir Elton John, Mandy Moore, Kelly Rowland) tackling songs that are near and dear to my stodgy, traditional heart. I needn't have worried--Mona Lisa Smile takes great efforts to sound vintage, and succeeds.

The album kicks off with Nat King Cole's classic anthem Mona Lisa Smile, sung by a smooth, barely-recognizable Seal (better known for Kiss For A Rose), who does an uncanny impersonation of Nat. Next, Tori Amos's You Belong To Me (originally sung by Jo Stafford). The background horns have been softened on the remake, and this is a beautiful song perfectly suited for slow dancing. Celine Dion's Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered is stunningly executed, from the oboe solos, sweeping strings, and background chorus; in fact, I didn't even guess that this was my favourite diva until I looked at the tracklisting.

Elton John's The Heart Of Every Girl did nothing for me, but to be fair, I've never been a fan of his singing style, with one exception: Sir Elton recorded two standards for a British soundtrack (Shoreditch), Makin' Whoopee (which he recently duetted with Rod Stewart on his latest standards album) and Ain't Misbehavin'. A pity that one of these songs wasn't featured instead; when Sir Elton belts a showtune, he transforms. Macy Gray's Santa Baby is even scratchier than Eartha Kitt's sexy original, with a nearly-identical soundtrack that will put any Grinch or Scrooge into the holiday spirit. Tori Amos's second contribution, Murder He Says, is featured in the film. It's a rollicking swing tune with a killer horn section and a saucy delivery. Next, Chris Isaak (Wicked Game) charms on Besame Mucho.

Mandy Moore's Secret Love is surprisingly strong vocally; I remember Mandy's earlier pop releases, and can't believe this is the same singer. Allison Krauss's What'll I Do is a breathy, haunted love song that seems to have stepped out of WWII. Trevor Horn's Istanbul (Not Constantinople) and Sh Boom put the swing in the `40s with girl group glee. Kelly Rowland's I'm Beginning to See the Light is a very bluesy, jazzy number, Lisa Stanfield's I've Got The World On A String is an ode to sultry jazz. The album closes with Barbara Streisand's Smile.

Kudos to the producers to sticking closely to the original background instrumentation and vocal stylings of the original hits. The roster of current pop stars carry these tunes with grace, wit, and their own styles while staying true to the longevity of standards that have been around for fifty years or more. This will appeal to fans of the Great American Songbook, 1940's tunes, and Wink Martindale's The Music of Your Life. Don't waste your time on the horrid De-Lovely soundtrack looking for updated takes on vintage tunes; opt for the excellent Mona Lisa Smile OST instead!

Highly enjoyable for all........2006-12-12

I enthusiastically recommend this recording to everyone, regardless of your musicological expertise. The novelty and variety of the music should be enough to draw in all but the most desensitized of the mainstream audience, and after repeated listenings a depth of enthusiastic musicianship is exposed. The mood ranges from the excruciatingly delicate lyre, falsetto, and chimes to the forcefully rhythmic hand-drums, shakers and (my personal favorite) the wooden double auloi that pack all the punch of a distortion guitar.

If, on the other hand, you are a bit of a scholar, this will please all but the most slavish positivist. This is not interpretation N of the Seikilos epitaph, and in fact I don't believe the notational fragments are at all represented on this recording. [It really shouldn't be attributed to "Ancient Greek Anonymous."] There are, however, rigorously-researched reconstructions of period instruments and relatively virtuosic performances. The melodies have been composed with a thorough appreciation for the greek vocal aesthetic, taking into account the tonality, rhythm and accent of the language and the fundamentally syllabic nature of ancient greek art song. Also well-represented is the "epicentric" melodic paradigm inherited from Sumeria, gravitating toward the central string, "mese".

My only disappointment is the lack of harmonic variety. The entire CD is performed in the diatonic genus (without even variations of chroma, unfortunately). In their defense, I admit that to modern ears the chromatic genus can sound like very bad jazz, and the enharmonic genus is (just as Plato said) prohibitively difficult for most singers. I sincerely hope this ensemble will explore them in future recordings. Nonetheless, this is most certainly not equal-tempered music, with an unmistakable, exciting "microtonal" spice.

I have owned this recording for a year, and it is one of my absolute favorites.

Reconstructing the beauty of a Symposium.......2006-04-27

The first remark concerns the instruments of this music, instruments that have been reconstituted on the model of the ancient ones. We will consider them as germanely faithful and they create sounds, a sound environment or ambience that is particularly original. The second remark is that this music is based on the pythagorian five-note scale (note Conrad Steinmann does not mention this pythagorian origin and the physical process used to determine the first five degrees based on vibrations, from C to G, but this process fails for A and B : these last two notes will be regulated and introduced in the scale only in the Renaissance) that corresponds to the first five degrees of our modern major scale. Then a second group of these five degrees and intervals are added to the first five in a second identical group constituting a ten-note scale that will be the basis of all western music up to the Renaissance, and thus the basis of all Christian sacred music of the Middle Ages, a music known as gregorian. So, in the surprising sound ambience we also recognize some elements we have already heard and enjoyed in our heritage. The next choice is to reconstitute the music of a symposium, a banquet with musical entertainment for free Athenian citizens, though there were no un-free citizens : it corresponds then to the extremely small minority of the people in Athens and ancient Greece who had civil rights because they were free. This music is based on texts from the poets of the time singing love and wine, the pleasures of love and wine and then the disruptive alienating impact of love. Finally the music itself is reconstituted from the tidbits that have survived, the accents, stresses and intonations of the language itself, and what we can know of the status of music in this free social elite. The result is very surprising. We will first mention the voices : only a (female) soprano and a/n (male) alto. This is a little bit too restrictive and it reduces the male voice to a very particular case. The music brings up some Mediterranean styles that will develop later on in Europe with medieval music and in the Arab world. We can hear some oriental passages, for instance in track # 9, ? Gaia ?. I will mention track # 18 on the sun eclipse of April 8, 648 B.C. that has a sombre depth created by the contrast between the soprano and the alto, and track # 20, ? Hypne Anax ?, in which the alto develops in his solo a vocal texture that is absolutely unexpected.

Lyrics and the instruments on this record are authentic. Music is composed by Conrad Steinmann. So it is contemporary "newly imagined" music in Ancient Greek style.
His reconstruction based on 2 main sources: 1. careful re-creation of the instruments, which helps to understand playing techinc; 2. Ancient Greek language, because "Ancient Greek is subject to rhythmical rules that regulate the lengh of the syllables...[These rules were] reconciled with tonal order of the respective instrument".
The result of this re-construction could be described in one word - beautiful!
Arianna Savall (soprano) so beautifully sings well-known lyrics by Sappho ("He Seems to Me Like Unto Gods That Man Who Sits Opposite You", "Eros Shook My Heart") and Anacreon, Alcaios so you could buy this CD only to understand how beautiful and melodic was Ancient Greek language.
As example, many sources stated that verses by Sappho were sung and these songs seemed to Ancient Greeks very melodic, delicate and beautiful. And when you are reading modern translation or even original - you have to have great imagination to understand this musical aspect of the poetry.
Here you have original lyrics, English translation and the singing, so this CD could be a kind of the textbook for the student-historian of the Antiquty.
This CD-hypothesis could be also viewed not only as academic experiment but also as best CD of New Age World music in Ancient Greek style.
Well, and if you are decided to buy this CD, why not to listen to authenitic Ancient Greek music?
I highly recommend you CDs by ENSEMBLE DE ORGANOGRAPHIA "Music of Ancient Greeks" and "Music of the Ancient Sumerians, Egyptians and Greeks" (North Pacific Music)!!!!

not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Yet another one of my great cds that walked out of my house! This is the one cd that I had been trying for years to find, and I finally found it! Mona Lisa was (is) so talented. I was looking forward to her 2nd cd coming out, but that never happened. If she came out with a cd tomorrow, you best believe I would be the 1st in line to buy it! Love this girl's cd!

Diamond In The Rough..........2006-08-19

This is one of the BEST albums, best VOICES, I have ever heard. I cannot BELIEVE she never made it to the top, it's a CRIME.

Ever since I first heard You Said all the way back in '96; I became obsessed with this girl; I thought she was gonna go on to be the next Mariah (and that is a SERIOUS compliment coming from me, believe me!). To this day, 10 years on, I have NEVER understood why that second album never got released? This girl was HUGE!!!

Sorry, but Brandy, even Monica couldn't hold a candle to her, she outsang them in the space of an opening note. And it just makes me SO damn mad to see the likes of Britney and Christina taking up the spotlight when there are those so much better who have disappeared off the face of the earth!!!

It's near impossible to pick a best song from this album, because in all honesty; I don't think there are any bad ones. You know how like 98% of the time, even with the best albums, there is usually at least one song that they could have done without adding to the running order? Well that song does not exist on this album. If I was forced to pick on pain of death; I guess my preference would have to run something like this:

this album came out in 1996 and i didn't buy it until 1998 and i still have it to this day its hard to tell you how i feel about this album its laidback, smooth and ahead of its time not one R&B album out right now sound better than this if you find it let me know but i wish mona lisa second album would have came out who knows it might have sold some units if it ever would have came out but this is a gem one love MONA LISA!!

This albums is the greatest I've heard in a while, I wish she was still out she was an great artist, She had an, second album that never came out called peach, with Island Records, than a third album with Defsoul, Called Gettin it on but neither never came out, I was waiting for their release.

Gettin it on is on the woo soundtrack though it's tight.

Hope she comes back on day.

Mona Lisa, smile.....your fans still bump your CD.......2004-03-22

Who knows why some artists take a dip into early retirement. While the reasons are endless, Mona Lisa shined back in '96 making appearances on "Soul Train" with hits like "Can't Be Wasting My Time", "You Said", "Just Wanna Please U", "Music Makes Me High" and the remix to "Renee", two of the songs being from the LB family. But that was an astounding 8 years ago nearly in the making. Once again a flea markt sale led me to her breath-taking debut. Other than the tracks mentioned, her CD is very solid and her voice is gorgeous. Although she may never grace the music industry again, make sure to have this album in your library. Keep smiling, Mona.

I can't believe how bad are the reviews this album got. So many three stars given. Man, the only reason I didn't give this one more stars is because there were only eight songs on it. That was my only hesitation to buy this album, since living in California as a teenager meant you needed to pinch your pennies a little bit. But I got it, and was pleased. The beats were the rugged underground beats that you would love to listen to any underground cat spit over. His lyrics are great, he rhymes so smooth and puts in good words in his flows. This is definitely ten times better than the Grand Opening, where he starts talking about hoes and money, blah blah. Get this for the pure lyrics that Asia spits out. peace

I'm not sure what ya'll are saying about this album. It's not on the same level of his EP, but it's still a banger. I've always enjoyed his mellow beats. It's something to chill out to and still hear dope lyrics. Planet Asia is one of the most underated emcee's on Earth, next to Eligh. Both of them don't get enough respect. PICK THIS ALBUM UP!

you would be wise to pick up asia's ep instead. Also of interest might be Blackalicious or the Jurassic 5. Not that this album is bad... but it is just not really worth owning. You will probably get tired of it asfter a few listens.

Since ive got the time on my hands, il let everyone who even wants to buy this album in on a secret: its not all that bad but still its not truly what one would expect from an MC like asia. Let's go thru the songs:

Holdin the Crown- look, this song is alright, even the beat's ok, gets your head movin, flows are typic. But after two or three listens you can get over it.

You Cant Miss- this song has had me on it for quite some time...i can say that it is one of my personal fav. from this album. I like the beat though the flows are not up to par.

Head Honchies- haha - this song i felt got tooo much airtime but il take it. Alright beat, flows are kinda not right for underground hiphop but its ok.

You & urs- this song aint that great, flows ok but mei is kinda off the topic.

stupid - all i can say is that asia called this for what it is on the album.

Takin ova- nice beat, good flowin, nice 427, it gets boring but il take it.

anotha fav. weight- i like the topics and the flows, the beat is nice nice too too. :)

Thats all. My review on this stunk, but im better than the rest of this review junk.

Asia's Last Stand.......2000-10-25

Planet Asia's last solo album "Last Stand" (before signing with Interscope) is a mediocre-produced album. I love Asia's flow, but his lyrics and beats are plain. If you have heard his EP, this album is very similar, also having only 8 tracks to cop. I feel Asia is better on collaborations [20000 Leagues under the Street, Sway & Tech, Cali Agents, to name just a few] than his solo effort. I am a huge Asia fan, but not much on this album. Maybe Interscope will notice how much talent Asia has, and get him a fresh producer like Premier, Pete Rock, or Hi-Tek.

Wagnerian Pagliacci.......2000-04-29

A must for post-romantic opera fans! Strauss meets Puccini in this lush, lyrical score- full of Korngold's characteristically multi-colored orchestration. When you hear the prelude, you wonder how an 18-year-old could produce such an inspired, techincally masterful score. And the big love duet is a real treat with its Tristan-like fatalism and its delectably Italianate lyricism (and a tune you'll remember!). The story is Italian verismo with a German-flavored heroine bent on self-destruction/spiritual redemption, but it's the performance that really wins the day. The orchestra and chorus are superb: the whole opening scene from magnificent, lyrical prelude and the very exciting choral climax are fabulous. Jerusalem sings more sweetly than usual with heady ardor, and Berry shows himself to be a real singing actor- glorious tone, full of shading and highly dramatic. However, Marton steals the show. You have heard her in the roles that stress her voice beyond its limits (Turandot and some Wagnerian roles come to mind) but as Violanta, she is wonderful. The tone is much more beautiful than usual, creamier and she floats some high soft notes of startling purity. Her death scene (I'm not giving anything away: it's a post-Wagnerian opera, so we expect the heroine to die) is very expressive and affecting. A fine addition to your collection- recommended to everyone.

Amazing Korngold-opera!.......1999-06-17

This is really a fantastic opera! I am sure many of you have not even heard of Korngold before, but if you listen to this, you will not forget him again. This opera has got everything: wonderful music, a mix between Wagner, Strauss and Puccini, and a plot with a good intrigue. Especially the love duet at the end of the opera is fantastic. You should all buy this one!
