5 out of 5 stars Delicate..yet, haunting.........2006-03-18

At first, i was hesitant on how i was going to enjoy this cd, but before i knew it, i was singing all the words along..and opera-style at that!
This is a really great cd, it's so beautiful, and delicate, you can feel every ounce of passion, the strings are amazing!
I highly recommend this cd, especially if you are a big fan of the band.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet.......2005-10-19

I've always liked A Perfect Circle. This has got to be one of the best CD's i've heard in a long time. The instrumentation is very precise and is very well done. Hearing my favorite songs through strings is one of the coolest things i've ever heard.
If you don't like classical music, give it a shot anyway. I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Quick arrival but product was slightly damanged.......2005-09-08

The CD arrived in a cracked case and appeared to have some scratches on it. This may have been from previous use, or it could have been from shipping. However the CD did work correctly after some light cleaning.

3 out of 5 stars It was OK, but could have been a lot better.......2005-04-26

I'll start by saying that there are parts of this CD that shine. 3 Libras is probably one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Orestes is right up there with it. It would be pretty difficult to screw these up when arranging them to a string quartet, so these are just wonderful. Songs like "The Outsider," however, just sound butchered. The performers try to make it loud and in doing so, it's out of tune and it sounds like a beginner hacking away at their violin. The sound is just ugly and isn't musical at all. Other tracks like "Weak and Powerless" sound like the violin needs to be taken down about two octaves. If you want to know what I'm talking about, think of Mariah Carey singing it. One other thing that drives me nuts on this CD is how the backbeats are replaced. The backbeats, for those of you that are unfamilliar with music terms, is where you would clap your hands to the song. These are replaced by single, loud notes on the cello, and sound like the hacking I mentioned earlier. Overall, though, I absolutely love the idea, but it just has a few shortcomings that make this unpleasant to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Good, except for a few small things.......2004-08-26

The first time I popped this CD into my player, I was expecting something amazing, being the owner of both of Tool's String Tributes as well as both Mer de Noms and The Thirteenth Step. I was so excited when I found out about this I ran to Circuit City ASAP to see if they had it - of course they didn't so I ordered here. Well, to put it bluntly, it is an amazing album; true thought and ingeniuty must have been put into these arrangements that don't leave out a single instrument - including the drums which are rendered by the contrabass and the violins as snares in songs such as The Outsider and Weak and Powerless. Even the original composition, Tangent, is a good arrangement.

However, there are a few small things that I didn't enjoy. The Noose is ruined by the electronics that can barely be heard on the first verse. The original was such a great song and it was probably the one song I wanted to hear the most, but I was disappointed with it. Also, in Weak and Powerless, after it gets quiet and starts up again, a mild phaser and panner effect are used - not that it doesn't sound neat, but it just kind of takes you by surprise, and for me it was a negative surprise. It does grow on you though.

Other than those two small things, it is an excellent album. Definately buy it if you're hardcore into APC, or even if you're just a casual listener with a keen ear for traditional arrangements.

5 out of 5 stars Quiet Noise .......2006-01-18

The great choice to put "Blue" and "Weak and Powerless" on one single. I guess if you listen this wou will run to record store to buy the whole album. You can compare both songs with the best Tool stuffs or even Smashing Pumpkins (Adore album).

5 out of 5 stars Maynard's voice is breathtaking.........2004-03-04

When I got this single I was'nt expecting much. I knew I liked "Weak and Powerless", but it's been so long since I heard it that I forgot how beautiful it is. And I usually dont like remixes, but this one is great. It doesnt have that awful addition of tacky dance music or the distortion of vocals, which is one of the reasons it turned out so well. I would recommend this to anyone.

3 out of 5 stars If you are a huge fan, but if you aren't . . ........2004-01-08

Track#1) Weak And Powerless (Originally appears on Thirteenth Step)
If you haven't heard anything by this band yet this is a good first single to hear . . it gives you a good idea what the band sounds like and what to expect from the full length CD (Thirteenth Step) . . this particular song however is not the best song on the full length CD . . (3/5)

Track#2) Blue [Remix] (The original appears on Thirteenth Step)
This is a remix done by James Iha (formally of The Smashing Pumpkins, now a member of A Perfect Circle) and Geoff Sanoff (a bassist who has worked on various albums as an engineer, producer, etc) . . as remixes go this one isn't bad at all . . compared to the original version of the song it's just as good . . no better . . no worse . . the original in my opinion is much darker and layered . . but this version breathes new life into the song if you have heard the original too many times . . (3/5)

Conclusion: If you are a fan of A Perfect Circle then I suggest you buy this . . if you aren't, then use your best judgment . . it is a cheap CD, but only worth it if you like hearing different versions of songs . . in this case just one different version

4 out of 5 stars GREAT FIRST SINGLE..........2003-12-15

I don't think APC could've picked a better first single than, "Weak and Powerless." "Blue," makes sense as a B-side release. It is not as heavy as the single, and I believe it leaves APC fans thirsting for more. I hope they plan to release, "The Outsider," as their next single, I think it is more heavier in sound than in, "Weak and Powerless." In either case though, Maynard's voice is simply beautiful...APC rocks!!!

4 out of 5 stars A little light........2003-12-07

Being a fan of A PERFECT CIRCLE, when I saw this item I had to buy it out of principal. Unlike the band's other CD singles (from MER DE NOMS) that lack new and interesting material, this one has a pretty good electronic remix of the song BLUE that rivals the original song. It's a little light though, and leaves the avid listener with a still thirsty ear. A must have for collectors of APC booty.

5 out of 5 stars What ??.......2006-12-10

The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover

3 out of 5 stars A let down.......2004-09-24

I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19

This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Album Description

Perfect Lives has been called "the most influential music/theater/literary work of the 1980s." At its center is the hypnotic voice of Robert Ashley. His continuous song narrates the events of the story and describes a 1980's update of the mythology of small town America. Perfect Lives is populated with myriad characters revolving around two musicians --"R", the singer of myth and legend, and his friend, Buddy, "The World's Greatest Piano Player". They have come to a small town in the Midwest to entertain at the Perfect Lives Lounge. As Robert Ashley describes in the opera synopsis, "they fall in with two locals to commit the perfect crime, a metaphor for something philosophical: in this case, to remove a sizable about of money from The Bank for one day (and one day only) and let the whole world know that it was missing."

The eloping couple, Ed and Gwyn, the old people at the home, the sheriff and his wife (Will and Ida) who finally unravel the mystery, and Isolde who watches the celebration of the changing of the light at sundown from the doorway of her mother's house are some of the characters who journey through the seven episodes of the opera.

Derived from a colloquial idiom, Perfect Lives transforms familiar material into an elaborate metaphor for the rebirth of the human soul. It has been called a comic opera about reincarnation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Helped to redefine contemporary American opera!.......1999-08-04

"Dear George...I'm not the same person that I used to be..." Ashley's 'Perfect Lives' has a long history, dating from the late 1970s, and exists in many different forms. This CD is the only available complete version of what Ashley calls an 'opera for TV in 7 half-hour episodes'. A classic of 'minimalism', the work also redefined 'opera' with its use of video imagery. The music itself acts as a 'pulse' or beat, often deliberately banal yet quite mesmerisingly beautiful (the 'cocktail piano' style of "Blue" Gene Tyranny), over which is spoken/sung a strange series of narrative monologues. Part of his larger opera trilogy (see 'Atalanta' (pt 1) and 'Now Eleanor's Idea' (pt 3), 'Perfect Lives' is rich in imagery (which you won't get from the CD alone), poetic narrative, chance events and musical experimentation. Along with Meredith Monk or Laurie Anderson, surely one of the most important works for rethinking 'opera' and incorporating new technologies into composition..."He took himself seriously...motel rooms had lost their punch for him..."

Album Description

Kevin Hendrickson may be the only man on earth who has started two separate buccaneer-themed rock bands. His signature melodies fueled Pirate Jenny in the mid-90s and later helped launch Captain Bogg & Salty's successful "Bedtime Stories for Pirates" CD.

Now Ship to Shore finds Hendrickson again breaking the pop mold with a variety of sounds and styles from the searing rock of "Let It Show" to the nostalgic folk of "Gumbo Jim." Though the album is technically non-themed (at least compared with previous releases) a theme of optimism emerges among tender ballads and blue-eyed soul echoing the songwriting craft of Squeeze or XTC, and the humor of They Might Be Giants.

Ship to Shore features the first-rate rhythm section of Tony Lash and Eric Furlong of Portland's Sunset Valley, John Morgan of Pirate Jenny, and Dave Owen of Captain Bogg & Salty. Other members of Captain Bogg & Salty also contribute their musical skills. The album was engineered by Jeff Saltzman.

The song "If I Could Make My Dreams Into Movies" was recently featured in the ABC Family Channel series "Knock First."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfecting the craft!.......2003-08-16

Kevin Hendrickson has been involved in several recording projects -- including Pirate Jenny, Captain Bogg and Salty, and PKExplosion. This is his first 'solo' album, but it is a graceful extension to his other work. With top-notch production and recording, this album is very rich and smooth. The lyrics show a tender side, working with the vulnerable-sounding vocals. The music is pure pop -- in the best way! The songwriting is great, with a refined sense of melody and harmony; a variety of instruments weave in and out, creating a multi-layer texture. My favorite has to be the uptempo romp "Love's Villains."

5 out of 5 stars Definitely for Blue Note lovers.......2006-03-17

    Enough said.

This is for the Blue Note collector.
To hear and see both Rudy Van Gelder and Michael Cuscuna is an absolute treat. Also, this CD & DVD package is priced right.

5 out of 5 stars Rudy takes it all.......2005-10-02

I came across this CD while looking for something else and Amazon has this wonderful habit of throwing up similar material that might be of interest. What caught my eye here was disc two, a DVD with an interview with Rudy Van Gelder and having listened to his work for the last fifty years this has got to be a 'must have' for me.

The CD (fifty-five minutes) has ten good solid jazz tracks, eight originally recorded by Van Gelder and two he re-mastered in 2004. I always enjoy listening to sessions he recorded, somehow the music has depth and a sort of sonic punch that seems unique to his work. Perhaps 'Moon River' by Art Blakey was a strange choice though and slightly out of keeping with the other obvious jazz arrangements.

The DVD (twenty-five minutes) has Van Gelder talking about the jazz musicians he recorded for Blue Note, Prestige and other labels and fortunately he comes across as a no nonsense professional so we are spared any boring small talk but I would have liked to see a bit more of his studio and equipment, it only has a minute or so. The rest of the DVD has text pages about Van Gelder, a history of Blue Note, a photo gallery of fifty-two Francis Wolf photos, biographies of the musicians on the CD and finally an ad (predictably) for some Blue Note t-shirts.

Overall a pretty good package I thought except for the appallingly designed CD booklet and back cover. For some reason these use type so small as to be nearly unreadable, plus some of it is white out of black, especially the back cover (needless to say the bar code is fine) and I am surprised that something so pathetically amateurish has been allowed to be printed and distributed by a major record company.

Commenting last June on CDs featuring the tenor, Kenny Baker, I wrote that his might be the most beautiful recorded tenor voice of the 20th century. My comparison included a lot of fine tenors, but I hadn't heard John Aler. Recently, I have been listening to him as Jupiter in Handel's SEMELE, then as Nadir in Bizet's PEARL FISHERS, and more recently as the soloist for this album. Kenny Baker's voice is pure, limpid, naturally musical throughout his range. The lower part of Aler's range has less music, but the upper part is richer than Baker's, and the whole is tremendously exciting. Nowhere is his voice lovelier than in the first song on this CD, "I Hear You Calling Me." Composed circa 1903, overflowing with love and longing, it became the immensely popular signature-piece in the 1920s and '30s of the Irish tenor, John McCormack. (Who, with less primitive technology, might well have provided the most beautiful recorded tenor voice of the century.)

I found some of the Aler collection quite familiar, others new and highly attractive (where have they been all my life?), and others that are lifted above the ordinary more by the singer's voice and art than by intrinsic merit. The songs are predominantly art or concert songs, composed mostly in the late 19th or early 20th century. Elegant, highly romantic, often ambitious, sometimes sentimental, popular in their time with lovers of semi-classical music, and often performed in concerts by leading singers of the day. Their lyrics include the poetry of Joyce Kilmer, Robert Herrick, Rabindranath Tagore, Shelley, Poe, Yeats, Eugene Field, and Sydney Lanier.

Did Aler get the idea for this CD from the fine baritone Thomas Hampson's CD, "An Old Song Resung"? Hampson's CD (unfortunately out of print), came out in 1990; Aler's, in 1995. The songs in both collections might well have been sung to similar audiences at similar concerts by similar singers. Still, the two CDs have only two works in common: - "Do Not Go, My Love," composed by Richard Hageman in 1917, and "When I Have Sung My Songs," by Ernest Charles in 1934. Both songs are superb, and both singers do them beautifully. I would give Aler a slight edge on the first; Hampson, on the second.
