5 out of 5 stars One the happiest musical discoveries in years........2006-08-16

I though that the oldest and most traditional styles of music - even older than 'son' which itself has been dated to 1570 (the dates often mentioned for son's appearance as the end of the 19th C. reflect the appearance of son in the urban areas of Havana and Santiago) - had practically disappeared from the island. But this CD shows they are very much alive and well, practiced every day by descendants of the original Canary Island colonists (guajiros), the first colonist to arrive in Cuba over five centuries ago.
These styles are punto cubano (or punto guajiro, the earliest proto-son), zapateo, decimas, tonadas, and contreversias (improvised musical arguments between two singers). The sophistication of the rules, regulations, and expectations of these traditions, with roots dating to the Mediterranean of the Middle Ages belie their seemingly humble origins.

This recording should be a cornerstone of anyone with serious interest in understating the flow of music across centuries, continents, and cultures.

And, for Cuban music connoisseurs, it's simply a sin not to have. Punishable by 15 minutes of salsa dura... OK, I won't be so mean. Just get the disc, you will be extremely happy.

Oh, as an added bonus the CD has superb notes, and an MPEG video is included on the CD that you can play on your computer.

To learn that this music is still so vibrant gives me tremendous joy, and makes the world ever so slightly a better place.
