RIP, BEVERLY SILLS 1929-2007.......2007-07-03
This wonderful CD set is a perfect compilation of her art as can be found anywhere. Her finest roles and performances are captured here, most of them derived from the Westminster/Audio Treasury recordings from her prime. Listening to them again demonstrates to me why she was so special, and such an inspiration to music lovers everywhere.
Brava Sills!.......2007-02-02
Bellini, I Puritani, "Son vergin vezzosa." Wonderful. Sutherland owns this--but so does Beverly Sills. Contemporary sopranos such as Netrebko and Gruberova have also sung this on their respective CDs, and while their product is nice, it simply does not compare. Sills is remarkably agile with her voice; the trills are well done; she cleanly hits high notes; the overall effect can only be described as wonderful.
Bellini, Norma, "Mira, o Norma". This is smoothly sung and very melodic. The technique that she exhibits does not overwhelm the music.
Rosini, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, "Contro un cor che accende amore." Again, her agile voice is well deployed. The florid singing is well done.
Donizetti, Roberto Devereaux, "Che m'apporti." Her clean, light voice matches well with this aria. Smoothly sung. Her "Quel sangue versato al cielo s'innalza," which follows, is well done. High notes cleanly hit, a smooth line.
Verdi, La Traviata, "E strano. . . .Sempre libera." Again, what agility! In "Sempre libera," she reveals a rich voice and, again, wonderful agility. This is an animated version of one of Verdi's showcase pieces.
Lehar, Giudetta. "Meine Lippen." A lot of fun! This is smoothly sung.
In the final analysis, this is a nice potpourri of Beverly Sills' repertoire. Those not familiar with her work will find this a nice entree to her oeuvre; those familiar with her will find this a good compilation.

Voila, Le Maitre.......2007-01-06
The production value reminds me of the fore-mentioned Nana Mouskouri album of the sixties. Some of it sounds a little Austin Powers, a little swinging sixties, but I don't mind. Musicians from that era seem much more versatile, more well-versed in all kinds of music from all over the world. The featured musical fills, whether by violin, accordion, what-have-you, are so tasty, so expert that they're almost boring; you take them for granted. Then there is the heavy orchestration, the notorious 40 piece violin sections. Fortunately none of it overwhelms the man's delivery and songwriting skills. His singing style does not sound dated in the least. It sounds timeless. He is masculine and strong, but not overly so, like Sinatra, who to me often sounds ponderous and self-important,dated like a WWII relic. Aznavour's delivery is light, subtle and rich, passionate yet disciplined. He never borders on self-parody, like Sinatra often does. He never displays that cheesy/smarmy rat pack/Las Vegas/lounge style.
The man can swing. You will feel it. It will move you, and you will want to move to its rhythms. Without having delved too far into the lyrics, I can say that thematically they are generally what you would expect. Things that would sound trite or clichéd in English sound heart-breaking and, well, French in this music. He sings of being 20 and the bittersweet memory of a woman who left him in Venice. Of poor artists painting their nude lovers in Monmartre, of the flowers, cafes and bakeries in a city that is now gone as he returns as an old man. Sad clowns with smiling faces--that kind of thing. Don't worry, it's all in French, and actually rather poignant.
I see that Aznavour is still going strong at 81. Guys like this are coolest when their music is not considered cool. Give it a try. I would recommend "Que C'est Triste Venise," and "La Boheme" as representative. Be open-minded, because this man has the gift of the muse.

You have to hear the Bad Plus's lush, lovely instrumental approach to Tears for Fears' hit "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." It's a slowly-evolving meditation on the tune that clearly is in love with its melody and structure. It might be the finest jazz cover of an '80s song since Miles Davis cut Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" back in the day. The other covers, especially their florid take on Rush's "Tom Sawyer," may be likely to get the most attention of anything on the album. But they rely too much on irony, on people's previous perceptions of the music, and do not seem quite as enamored of the original. They're jokes that are funny the first time but not so much the second or third. As with the Bad Plus' previous releases, the group's original compositions are the meat of the album: "Giant" and "Physical Cities" carve out huge walls of sonic space with abandon. This is rockist jazz, a postmodern fusion that relies greatly on tricky time signatures and mashups of seemingly incongruous sound. It's not likely this music will age spectacularly well, but so what? If you're looking for some engaging and conversation-inducing dinner music preceding an evening spent watching Napoleon Dynamite or any Wes Anderson flick, this is just the thing. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:

Does anyone really LIKE listening to this music?.......2007-06-06
I have thoughts like these as I listen: Wow, Dave King brings something to his kit that few jazz drummers ever have (although I could do with a little less bombast and heavy-handiness). Or, Ethan Iverson's displaying some awesome chops (although he still strikes me as awfully mannered). Or, Reid Anderson actually has some pretty attractive songs on this disc (although the band unnecessarily beats "Physical Cities" to a bloody pulp).
Bottom line--I can't convince myself that these boys aren't stuck in unwitting self-parody. That is, attitude trumps substance. To be expected, I suppose, when a band comes with this much hype--and apparently believes it.
Nevertheless, I'm pretty much bowled over by the covers (unlike some of the other reviewers), especially the laconic tumescence of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and "This Guy's in Love with You." "Tom Sawyer" strikes me as funny, and "Life on Mars" as appropriately weird.
Actually, in a lot of ways, this is a pretty killer disc, although, it must be said, the vibe pretty quickly wears thin. Consequently, I find myself not picking it to listen to for the pure pleasure it gives, but to access its quirkiness. Which, unfortunately, tends to relegate it to novelty status.
That said, it's quite an attractive novelty. Somewhere between 3 and 5 stars.

Life Is But A Dream..........2006-08-30
Debussy was a composer who lived very close to this Invisible Stream. His music reflects a gentleness and yet a strength that flows throughout each composistion. The arrangements are dreamy and mystical and allows one to go into their "inner chamber" and pray in secret to the One who knows their heart as well as their soul.
As much as I love this CD, I tend not to listen to it in the car. I once listened to it while making a routine drive to Santa Monica. The CD stopped and I had somehow missed all of my exits and ended up in Ventura...talk about being in dreamland!
It's a great CD to put in your walkman and go to an outdoor cafe' where you can sip a cafe latte and write poems to an unknown lover whose face you cannot remember, but whose gentle breath is the scent of lavendar...oh, I wax poetic...so sorry...
If you are into quiet and stillness, get this CD...it's truly a breath of fresh air in this noisy, crowded, extreme world we have to be in but not necessarily of...
Peace & Blessings

An excellent introduction to Debussy and French music.......2005-06-30
One interesting music history tidbit on Debussy that might interest the new listener: Even though Debussy did not like the label, his music was labeled "Expressionism" for the similarities to what the French artists like Monet were doing at the same time. In Debussy's case, his intent was to create "emotional impressions" with music that evoked specific moods and images in the mind - not unlike what the "impressionistic painters" were trying to do on canvas using pure color and form to evoke the fleeting, emotional moment of a landscape scene. "Prelude of the Afternoon of the Fawn" is a good example of this dreamy, lingering, emotive style of music.

OKAY BUT NOT STELLAR.......2007-05-18
I like songs 1, 2, 7 and the band's dance remake of White Rabbit. kaRin's voice is hauntingly similar to Kate Bush; although real heavy on the Vo-Coder. Some of the songs, instead of being entrancing tend to drone on and none of the tracks pop out as a really strong single. However, I am not sorry I bought the cd and would recommend it to others because it's easy on the ears (very melodic).
Music for the Witching Hour.......2007-04-13
Imagine the perfect song for a lovesick vampire. Imagine what moonlight peeking through gathering stormclouds sounds like. Imagine a Hammer horror movie with a Moby soundtrack. Imagine the distant music that haunts the dreams of some half-mad hero from an H.P. Lovecraft story. Imagine the perfect CD for your date with that fair-skinned lovely with the black lipstick and fingernail polish.
Imagine closing your eyes and feeling the sound sweep over you, setting you hair on end and your soul on fire.
Then stop imagining it and order this CD. Wait for a dark and stormy night and slip it in. Set your imagination free on midnite wings...

This is music of great diversity and charm. Lang Lang returns here to his native China for solo, chamber, and orchestral music. Those expecting great exoticisms will not find them here. We are all aware of how the East influenced the West in music - Debussy, Ravel, and other composers have picked up the harmonies and sonorities and made them familiar to us. But the music recorded here, all of it composed in the 20th century, is indebted to Western music, and indeed, there is hardly a jarring note to be found. The "exoticisms" are all comfortable. The "Yellow River" Piano Concerto, a work arranged by four composers in 1969 based on a 30-year-old choral cantata that was made up of socialist songs of praise, is a piece of pure late Romanticism and is reminiscent of Tchaikovsky and other late Romantics. One solo piano piece is 97 seconds of pure virtuosic joy ("Happy Times," by Zhu Jianer), and another ("Dance of Spring" by Sun Yiqiang) is a delicate, almost French Impressionist piece. The "Dance from Qiuci" by Zhao Jiping is a duet for piano and guanzi, a double-reed pipe, that will remind listeners of Klezmer music. Each track offers a new delight. Lang Lang's performances, alone and with orchestra and others, are brilliant. A must-have. --Robert LevineAlbum Description
Lang Lang has fascinated audiences all over the globe--now he takes them home to show them "his" China with Dragon Songs, a CD+DVD set with Chinese piano solo, chamber, and orchestral music. Discover the musical culture that forged one of the most acclaimed classical musicians of our day. The CD juxtaposes the Yellow River Concerto, a large-scale, highly virtuosic piano concerto with colorful sound scales, with miniature pieces for solo piano and with chamber pieces that combine the piano with traditional Chinese instruments. Most of the pieces merge tradional Chinese melodies and idioms with the Western classical music--the result is music of astonishing beauty and ease that will strongly appeal to a broad audience. The 130-minute DVD features a full-length documentary offering a fascinating and intimate look behind the scenes of Lang Lang's latest China tour. The DVD also includes a concert of the solo piano and chamber music pieces from the CD filmed during the Dragon Songs recording sessions in Beijing.Customer Reviews:

Change of pace ... the 2 hour and change DVD alone worth the gander! .......2007-05-16
On the other hand, the DVD shows a more toned down Lang Lang and I do like the work he does with the young folks although it is ironic [for those who have seen the DVD] to see Lang Lang at the master classes in China telling the students to tone down their expressiveness [!] or, put bluntly, key banging which is a little like our friend GG [Glenn Gould] giving pontifications on the importance of posture [!] at the piano! That famous folding chair notwithstanding and which now is reposing at the GG museum in Canada. Under safety-glass no less!
It's hard not to like Lang Lang [or, as his people keep emphasizing, 'LAHNG-LAHNG' in pronunciation or, hey, try the word 'lawn' via a borrowed Boston accent [you know, 'kahhhh' for car sort of thing and simply add a 'g' ! ] and I think with some time he may mellow a bit although concurrently maintaininbg his enthusuiasm. But then hey, back to GG, and this from 'very' close amigos, to wit, and think the Big Apple CBS recording studio way back when a la, "Glenn, please, a 'vocalization diminuendo' to the extent possible, OK ... ." I don't know about you but the 'Tah-Tah-Tah-Tah-ing' ad infinitum grated after awhile!
Switching and noting that others have already commented on the presented music which I agree was well done and rather sedate where it had to be, between the DVD that exceeds 2 hours [131 minutes] and the CD of an hour an change, a rather nice package considering the $14.97 [as I type this anyway] price tag. Finally, 'what' Lang Lang has to say in the DVD and in terms of its substance appealed to me and I also think he is wise enough to know that he is 'not' another Liszt but then too he does make clear that he searches for his own identity which is always preferable to cloning the best of the lot, as it were, or, worse, such mixed bag cloning and then attempting to brag about it! Or, hey, various renditions of Lang-Lang at the piano in a sort of cross between Jerry Lee Lewis gone amuck and Stevie Wonder sans the shades!
Doc Tony
BTW, Lang Lang at Carnegie Hall [CH]. Worth the view! I recall certain purists getting all bent out of shape when Lang Lang in this his first CH recital introduces his father and they do the 'competing horses' thing with Dad on the 'R-U' [sp. ??] and son on the piano but as one can see, 'especially' if they know the CH audiences which can be akin to the UK Proms brethren from across the waters [in terms of sophistication] when they are happy versus when they are not , but the crowd seemed to love the duo! I admit at once that I did too! Interesting instrument that 'R-U', yes? Decidedly beats the "prepared piano" [! -- think about it!] thing tho' ... by a spoon! Ehhh, I mean a bolt ... a marble ... a mile! ;-)
A Brand New Intepretation of the 'Yellow River Concerto'........2007-05-02
Lang Lang and Yu Long's new collaboration expectedly brought a host of criticisms, both at home in China and abroad.
However, being an open-minded listener, I must say that I find the Yu-Lang new collaboration not merely 'acceptable', but at moments beautiful and moving.
The first movement's 'Yellow River Boat Song' for once truly becomes a 'song', not the bombastic and macho style that I got used to listen to. There are much more interplays between the orchestra and the soloist, and the musical motives are well-marked. Some truly fine playing by Lang Lang, who otherwise lacked the technical prowess of maestro Yin Cheng-zong in some demanding passages of this movement. Lang is able to rise to the occasion in the long `coda' section, though.
The second movement 'Ode to the Yellow River' is majestic and moving in turn. Lang and Yu's interpretation adds on an melancholic touch to this movement that again was lacking in the previous grandiose versions, depicting the many hardships suffered by its nearby inhabitants as witnessed by that great river, the story being told now through music. Yu's orchestral backing in this movement is really wonderful.
The third movement 'The Yellow River's Rage' begins with an authentically Chinese style. This movement sets to depict the various facets of the great river. It is ferocious and majestic in turn, with some graceful passages like the opening pianoforte section that requires an almost `pi-pa-like' effect. In the latter half of the movement, the soloist leads the orchestra in a series of majestic outbursts that demand high technical prowess, culminating in a grand finale. Here, in this demanding movement, Lang Lang displays his ability to mesmerize through the diverse styles with which he treats the score. The tempo, however, is otherwise slower than Yin Cheng-zong's. There is less of a sense of `imminence', and more of a sense of aloofness when compared to Yin's version, of which the conducting of Yu Long should account for.
The last movement is a propaganda-like passage calling forth Chinese people to unite and defend the great river. Needless to say, the movement served a lot of propagandist purpose for the then PRC government. Lang Lang and Yu Long substituted it with an almost carnival-like gaiety by the orchestra followed by the soloist that befits the current mood. The middle-section's bombing-like intense passage leading up to the `hymn to Mao Ze-dong' the 'Red East' was substituted by a transitory section led by the pianoforte in a `stretching out' manner. The Red East was played with an appreciative beauty not hitherto found in Yin's early version.
Well, times have changed, and a propagandist piece like the `Yellow River Concerto' needs to gain new momentum in order to re-live its own musical life. Lang Lang and Yu Long succeeded admirably in this. Even Yin himself recently declared that his playing of the work now is drastically different from that of its premiere days.
Let those who live in the past bury their past!

More Like This, Please!.......2007-04-23
Their only hit isn't a very good indicator of what the rest of 'Pelican West' is like; it's inescapably catchy but doesn't have the lavish horn-driven sound of the rest of the cuts. Not that I'm criticizing; if I were in a band I would want recognition and riches as well! It is unfortunate that so many misguided snobs equate 'Success' with 'Selling Out', and I would hate to be misunderstood to be saying that "Love Plus One' is inferior because it succeeded so well. Should you decide to purchase this CD, you will be delighted to discover that it is filler-free, original, and brimming with true creativity.
The wry humor doesn't hurt, either. "When will life become a major film?" When, indeed? If you missed this the first time around do yourself a favor and pick it up now.

The album (and the band) is known for two songs in particular; 'Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)' and 'Love Plus One'. But there's so much more to this album. The depth of this album is quite phenomenal, to say the least. The marimba on Love Plus one, the flawless arrangement on Lemon Firebrigade, and the electric piano in Marine Boy all add up to one beautiful soundscape the enters one ear and doesn't come out the other. No, it stays with you the whole rest of your life. Now, I'm not old enough to have been there when this band first came out. I'm not even old enough to have seen them break up! But I know good music. This whole album screams 'Beach Music'. Buy this album and please don't skip a track. You need to witness the journey fold out for yourself.

Best remix collection I've heard.......2007-05-18
Most remix collections seem to have a few good tracks among a bunch of tracks that aren't worth listening to more than once. This two-disc set is the exception to that rule; nearly every song included is tasty aural bliss.
I would have expected Collide's layered organic and electronic sound to be hard to do justice while taking in new directions for remixing, but each of these artists have succeeded, often spectacularly so. Only one track is difficult for me to enjoy: Somewhere/Orchestral Mix; I find it an interesting attempt but it's not for me. The rest range from very enjoyable to music I might never want to take out of my CD player.
Get this album for The Lunatics Have Taken Over the Asylum (see also the DVD Like the Hunted), and enjoy the rest of the sweet and sultry gems from Slither Thing/Amish Rake Fight Mix to the delightfully sad Crushed/Out of Control Mix, plus plenty more.
To Collide fans, even those skeptical of remixes, this is a must-own. To those not yet a fan of Collide, you might start with Some Kind of Strange or Chasing the Ghost and then pick this up - though I'm not sure it matters, and this would still make a great listen without any prior knowledge of Collide.

These two disks hold a variety of moods from the frantic to the meditative, there is a remix for almost all occasions and then some. If you're just starting out with your Collide obsession this is a great album to showcase their diversity and complexity; and if you're deep into your Collide wall to wall shrine then this album is hard to beat and will surely earn a coveted spot on your shrine to Collide.
What an awesome find!.......2006-08-20
I absolutely adore Collide, and plan to try out their other CDs. It's amazing the feeling the music gives you. It's very ethereal, and makes you feel like you're somewhere else. Definitely a great buy, even if you're not into this type of music.
Others I would recommend in this genre are Claire Voyant (Time and the Maiden), Delerium (Karma), Hungry Lucy (To Kill a King), and Lamb (any of them, especially Lamb and Fear of Fours).

Classic Lakme .......2003-07-07
in Lakme and has been considered one of the best exponent of
the role throughout her distinguised carreer. The archetype of
the light french coloratura soprano - the voice is small and
slightly tremoulous but well focused and her technical assu-
rance (stupendous high notes) refined musicianship and idioma-
tic phrasing make for a highly polished performance. Charles
Burles is light and musical and blends exquisitely with Mesple
in their duets while Roger Soyer's rich voice makes him a
strong presence. The supporting cast is in very capable hands.
Well recorded and conducted - a classic performance indeed.

Album Description
Jim Tomlinson and Stacey Kent's most collaborative album to date, which won BEST ALBUM at the 2006 BBC Jazz Awards.Customer Reviews:
Playful and relaxed........2007-03-04
Saxophone player Jim Tomlinson is Stacey Kent's partner both in a personal and a professional capacity. So, when recording his latest solo album, it was a logical step to call upon his wife's vocal talents as the cutting edge of an intimate small band set.
"The Lyric" is a wonderful journey through a selection of classic jazz standards.
Stacey Kent and Jim Tomlinson fit together hand in glove and on "My Heart Belongs To Daddy", "If I Were A Bell", "Something Happens To Me" and "Cockeyed Optimist", her sublime vocals and his lush tenor are a delight.
Stacey is relaxed, playful and has never sounded better.
The stand-out track is the lightly buttered bossa nova of Antonio Jobim's "Corcovado" which sounds as good as the famed Getz/Gilberto version from 1963.
Tomlinson also purrs through two instrumentals - Manha De Carnival and Outra Vez - like a well-fed cat. An essential purchase for all Stacey's fans.
A setback for Stacy.......2007-01-14
Her redentions of show tunes are awkward and out of place. "If I Were a Bell," "Cockeyed Optimist" and "Surrey with the Fringe" are just not the kinds of tunes that Stacey can wrap that beautiful, enormously expressive and articulate voice around.
At her phenominal best on other collections, Stacey sings each song as if it were written just for her. In this collection, she sings as if she's borrowing each tune from somebody else.
Dave Newton on piano, Simon Thorpe on bass and Colin Oxley on guitar are as they have been on Stacey's other albums, superb. So is Tomlinson, when he isn't trying to push Stacey off stage.
Get your own album, Jim. Let Stacey do hers.
Tomlinson and Kent's "Lyrics" Worth Listening.......2006-12-23
Stacey Kent does not need to raise a ruckus to impress; her warm velvetry girlish vocals need no gimmicks to convey the subtle meaning of each tune. She has a way of unfurling the emotions of each note with her attenuated vocal inflections. However, such a treat was not the intial vision of this project when British husband Jim Tomlinoson, a tenor saxophoist in the eminent tradition of Stan Getz, wanted "The Lyric" to be his solo project. However, slowly from his wife Stacy Kent's nascant involvement, it developed into Kent handling the lion share of the vocals, tackling 11 out of 13 tracks. In hindsight, such a move has been felicitious, as together they have weaved together a masterful tapestry of contemporary jazz; a collection of well chosen standards performed in an intimate and engaging way. Further acknowledgement of the duo's arete simpatico is affirmed when this disc won the prestigious "Album of the Year" award in the 2006 BBC Jazz awards festival.
Unlike most standard albums, the songs are impeccably chosen from a panoply of sources, some of which even crossing linguistic boundaries, with others from classical musicals and the great American songbook. Most propitious is Kent's cover of the Parisian chanteuse Keren Ann's "Jardin D'Hiver." Here, Kent sings as if French is her mother tongue. When Kent deals with the ominous oeuvre of the musicals, "Surrey with the Fringe on Top," a beloved song from the musical Oklahoma, is a glorious choice. Kent wastes no syllable of this extremely lyrically verbose song. Giving each syllable a meditatively new breadth of life, this jazz diva certainly brings out a new texture of appreciation. On Frank Sinatra's "What Are You Doing for the Rest of Your Life," Kent takes her leisure to entice and seduce assisted by her husband's consenting sensuous saxophone swirls. While on the undulating ode to romantic abandonment, "I Got Lost in His Arms" is the perfect exemplar of how Kent utilizes subtlety and inference to exude the hopelessly romantic tenor of the composition.
However, unlike her peer Diana Krall who has given herself to a completely languid late night approach on her latest CD, Kent does pick up her heels for some sassy bossa nova. Her take on South Pacific's "A Cockeyed Optimist" exudes with life and vitality. Though her girlish twirls may come across as weak, Kent ironically captures the naivety and sincerity of Cole Porter's swinging "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." On the couple of tracks without Kent, the quartet of Tomlinson, David Newton (piano), Dave Chamberlain (bass) and Matt Skelton (drums) give a breezy performance on "Manha de Carnival" and a lazy-jazz lounge feel to "Outra Vez."
Overall, the spotlight of "The Lyric" is rightly on Kent: the ingenious ways in which she woos with her vocal nuances without given to drama. Yet Kent puts in enough emotions and rumination that she does not come across as blithe or superficial. However, behind the great woman is her man--Tomlinson's spot on backing never for a moment intrude. Rather, creating just the right texture that exemplifies his wife's vocals, this shows what a marriage of like-mindedness can do. In short, when it comes to contemporary jazz, Kent and Tomlison are as deserving as the accolades they have had received.
