When the most exciting producer in pop music himself puts out a CD, the thrill is in the discovery: The world may have already suspected that Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, and a small army of other singers owed 75% of their fame to the stockpile of skittering beats Timbaland built and then graciously set them upon, but here's a chance to prove it. Or it might have been in less welcoming hands. Shock Value is a far-reaching and ambitious disc; a masterpiece, even, in its own way. But it's not at all self-centered. If there's a point being put across here, it's that Timbaland came by your vote as behind-the-scenes musical man of the hour honestly: pair him with Fall Out Boy or the Strokes, and he will not only provide tracks that surprise you by maintaining their rock 'n' roll integrity, he will also convince you that shimmer's role in rock music has, to now, been tragically misguided and miniscule. Re-team him with Timberlake and Furtado (for the near-flawless track "Give It to Me") and he will again trade vocal bites, but they will still be nibbly, not voracious. In a CD full of experiments and puzzles (why is Elton John just piano-playing, not singing? And how did the L.A. band One Republic end up on this disc?) a single truth emerges: Timbaland's taste is impeccable, but his judgment is even better. Shock Value, by virtue of its swirly beats and mesmerizing rhythms, will bring him a smidge closer to the spotlight. But because it's a disc of collaborations, he'll retain the shadowy-genius reputation that precedes him, and that he so richly deserves. --Tammy La Gorce

3 out of 5 stars Shocked at shock value.......2007-07-13

Now, I'm not going to say I didn't like the album. I did like it. But, I just do not feel Timbaland let loose enough.
I think he is a wild stallion, but it just felt like something was pulling back on the reins, something was MISSING.
I can't put my finger on it, but felt this album was...Too controlled to offer an SHOCK to me.
I wanted a cut loose RAW BEAT album.
I was satisfied, but being satisfied means the content was just satisfactory. I want to be satiated. I hope another album is to follow this, I really do. I'm addicted to the beats, Timbaland is EXCELLENT for those. I can't get enough. BUT, please next time don't just shock me.
I want shock waves, electricty to the veins. Maybe next time.

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop Tim.......2007-07-09

This album rocks. I love that Timberland teamed up with all different types of artists. Rock this!

1 out of 5 stars two decent cuts.......2007-06-30

You already know the two good cuts - theyre the singles and fully worth downloading. the rest of the album is disappointing.

in the mid 90s timbaland sounded fresh - had a new style - and was known for his creative beats. you would never know that from this new cd. theres nothing remarkable about the beats - the melodies dominate. do we buy timbaland albums for the melodies? i dont think so.

timbaland isnt trying to impress anyone - and when artists arent hungry and have no one to impress they slack off and make lame albums like this.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-06-27

This album just shows how amazing Timbaland is. Although some of the songs get criticized for sounding too much like other songs (The Way I are = My Love) that is the beauty of it! Songs that we already love sound like some of these. It sounds enough like it to attract the same fans, but different enough to give the public something new. Besides, most of the songs sound so different then anything I've ever heard in my life. Buy this CD!

3 out of 5 stars (2.5 Stars) He Definitely Gives You Some 'Shock Value' With This CD!.......2007-06-26

The musical genius that is Timbaland has had his fair share of success with a wide range of artists. From his earlier work with Aaliyah to Jay-Z to Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado later, Timbo has worked with some of the best around. So it seemed to be a no-brainer to put out another solo album amid his new found resurgence on the music scene. So Timbaland Presents Shock Value is his latest offering with a multitude of eccentric guest artists and very little hip-hop to speak of outside of his lyrics. The lead single "Give It To Me" features Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, two artists who have flourished since uniting with the super producer. Both give their signature Pop sound to the song, leaving very little room for the songs to be played on traditional urban stations. Most of the album follows the same formula of non-Hip-Hop beats with non-Hip-Hop cameos. Artists like alternative rock band The Hives ("Throw It On Me"), the Punk-Pop crew Fall Out Boy ("One & Only"), pop icon Elton John ("2 Man Show"), electronic artist Amar ("Bombay"), pop-R&B artist Money ("Fantasy"), electronic goth/punk duo She Wants Revenge ("Time"), and others give the album a mainstream pop radio feel that longtime fans of Timbaland will be turned off to. He even goes as far as to remix the song "Apologize" by his own Mosley Music artists OneRepublic with no verses by the rapper himself. Timbaland does give R&B signee Keri Hilson some much deserved spotlight on songs like the 'SexyBack'-inspired "Way I Are," "Scream" featuring Nicole Scherzinger of Pussycat Dolls fame, and "Miscommunication" with labelmate Sebastian. Outside of a few hip-hop guest stars like Dr. Dre and Missy Elliott ("Bounce"), Mosley Music signee Sebastian ("Kill Yourself"), and former partner-in-crime Magoo ("Boardmeeting"), Timbaland Presents Shock Value gives a lot of shock and very little value for us Hip-Hop heads. If this is the new direction for Timbaland and his Mosley Music Group, then good luck to him and his new venture. He was never a strong lyricist, but Timbaland was certainly a huge Hip-Hop producer. But with his eye on the Pop music prize, there will be little room for him to focus on Hip-Hop....for himself or other artists.

A former oil field worker, Toby Keith has always known how to capture the passions of blue-collar men and women, desperate to blow off steam at the end of the day. As such, he's stocked his latest album with themes designed to push all the right emotional buttons--patriotism, Jesus, buddy love, fast women, and reality altering substances. "I Love This Bar," the first single, offers a kinder, gentler Keith than the boot-shoving redneck of "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American)." But as he segues to "American Soldier," a song so gung-ho and puffed up that it could be a musical recruitment poster, you know he's gearing up for a scud missile of a payoff. Sure enough. By the time he gets to "The Taliban Song," a comedic and cartoonish skewering of The Enemy, recorded in concert, it's hard to remember that he once wrote well-crafted ballads of romantic infatuation. Now it's all grandstanding, baby, even the best-written song, a jazzy, talking blues which fillets his critics. If he's not exactly "Shock'n Y'All" as the title suggests, he's certainly putting his "Baddest Boots" forward. --Alanna Nash

MR toby kieth got it right again . He brings accross a good voice and a message that is right on . And it is a breath of fresh air to hear an artist think before he opens up in voice . HIS views are so right .Not as on target and red white and blue . THAT should have been number one song of the yr. But very good .

If people don't like this genre then why bother reviewing? If you want fruit for breakfast don't go for the eggs and bacon then complain it's too heavy. This is simply great hard edged country from a man who says what he feels. America would be safer if more people like Toby spoke out. Only slight criticism, please do more ballads Toby!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Samples!.......2007-06-04

I work at a cosmetics counter and this CD is perfect for playing all day! Its tracks are all fanastic--though, I don't care for "Bounce" much. If you like the songs Timbaland has produced with Nelly Furtado and JT--and pretty much whoever else--you'll enjoy "Shock Value." He collaborates with lots of artists from several different genres of music--and samples Nina Simone and others. Very danceable, listenable and fun. I wonder to whom he refers with the line in "Give It To Me," "I'm a real producer and you're just a piano man." Curious!

4 out of 5 stars Timba-"Shocked".......2007-05-14

Generally I only buy a CD if I like at least 3/4 songs, with this CD I liked Give it to Me with JT and Nelly F. that I had to have the CD. I knew I wouldn't be disappointed b/c all of Timbalands beat are always fresh and new. After a few listens through I really was surprised how much I liked the whole CD. He has songs with everyone from Missy, to Justin, to Elton John, and Fallout Boy. This CD really shows his skills to work with any and all kinds of music and with any and all types of groups.

The sound of Eels' Electro-Shock Blues, the follow-up to the band's intriguing Beautiful Freak, reflects a year in which leader Mark "E" Everett suffered the loss of his sister to suicide as well as the illness of his mother and other tragedies. The music's hushed, sometimes dark sound and Everett's earnest vocals are often more convincing than his diary-entry lyrics, despite the power and daring inherent in describing illness in alt-pop settings that recall everything from hip-hop to Tom Waits. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars The one to listen!.......2006-01-15

From time to time I go and purchase music. I consult what I consider to be the most informative and reliable publications in the industry. Why? So I don't get burned!! Many is the times when I have purchased a CD that did not quite reach higher levels of listening enjoyment. I am very happy to say that the EELS Electro Shock Blues is a beauty of a CD. Happy to discover such a talented force is alive and well in the free world. Comparisons to other bands is just not going to cut it. EELS do their own thing. Yes, similarities will always exist. After all, they are just so many notes available to work with but this band sure earns high praises. Which by the way made me realize how little I know of what is going on out there in terms of good music. I ended up buying 12 CD's and If you read this far then please consider buying Beta Band, those guys are TASTY!!! I was so impressed with Electro Shock Blues that I will in the near future buy Blinking Lights and....., must say that Electro Shock Blues received on the average a little more ratings than their next endeavor. Anyone who is seriously interested on acquiring a great album look no further. Electro Shock Blues is a timeless masterpiece, as good as they come!

5 out of 5 stars Not odd..........2005-11-01

Not oddly moving, just groovy but with an edge, and sophistication to challenge your aesthetics but rhythyms to appeal to your inner britney spears...top quality

5 out of 5 stars Shocking Blues.......2005-09-26

Everyone who knows the Eels knows their frontman/leader/ect doesn't flinch from writing songs about the darker things in life. Even so this is probably the bands darkest album too date. Starting with a song about his sisters suicide and then a song about her funeral its hard to imagine a bleaker start to an album, especially when its backed by the Eels twisted alt pop. Its pretty accurate to describe 'Electro-Shock Blues' as being a concept album, all about death, depression and even the light at the end of the tunnel. In the hands of another band like Marylin Manson or Pink Floyd this might by an unbearably selfrighteous, indulgent and wallowing experience, but E has just enough off kilter humor and quirkiness to pull it off without every giving unto those tendencies. Who else could write a song about watching your world crumble around you and going insane and include line like "voices tell me I am the sh*t" as E does on 'My Descent Into Madness'.

Probably the least 'rock' of the Eels albums, 'Electro-Shock Blues' is all twisted jazz, occasional drum loops, distorted violins, and breathy vocals. Like most Eels albums its got weird nursery rhyme quality, but this time its darker and more nightmarish. Theres only one real break for a pop song in 'Last Stop: This Town' which lightens up the gloomy mood and direction the album is taking up to this point. From their it quitely builds until finally there is relief at the end with 'PS You Rock My World', which its lucky because the confessions of E are so depressing that by the end your in desperate need of relief. Its not an easy album to listen to, and take really appreciate it it needs to be listened too in full, but as E will tell you the good things in life never come easy.

5 out of 5 stars one of many masterpieces from mark oliver everett.......2005-07-19

When "Electro Shock Blues" was released almost seven years ago, it was pronounced as certain by the critics the this record would be the eels' and Mark Oliver Everett (aka E's) masterpiece. "Electro Shock Blues" was one of the highlights of the late 90s in music and it is certainly one of the eels' best recorded works, but E, like Neil Young, is a career artist who keeps churning out five star-worthy records, each succeeding release differing in sound and lyrical tone from the previous--just look at the differences between this album and the next album, "Daisies of the Galaxy."
Many people who have not heard this record, but have read about it or heard about it would probably be turned off, dismissing it as "depressing," which is not true. E, himself, once said that "Electro Shock Blues" would probably be one of the most positive albums he would ever make. Many of the songs are meditations on death and dying, but the songs come across as uplifting in many ways, as a therapeutic response from E. The circumstances surrounding many of the songs on this album are truly tragic, but much in the way of great art has come from pain and suffering.
Many of the songs rank among E's best. Ranging from starkly minimal cuts, like the opener "Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor" to the slick-sounding, singalong worhthy "Last Stop: This Town," "Electro Shock Blues" is a veritable cornucopia of sounds. Lyrically, the songs feature some of E's best poetic couplets; just check out the whimsical "3 Speed" and take in the words there, for a glimpse of E's monumental talent as a songwriter.

5 out of 5 stars Not cheerful, excellent song writing and muscianship.......2005-07-10

As the title indicates, this collection deals with depression, hospitalization, cancer, funerals. Lots of original hooky songs. Too dissonant for happy cupcake type personalities. Lots of talent here.

The three electronic, hip-hop-influenced albums Herbie Hancock recorded during the 1980s--of which Future Shock was the first, followed by Sound System and Perfect Machine--have been the most maligned by fans of his enormously influential '60s-era jazz work. The reissue of all three albums, each newly remastered with bonus mixes and new liner notes, makes it clear Hancock was much more than simply a jazz pianist reaching for a pop crossover audience. To be sure, Hancock got his pop hit with Future Shock's "Rockit," and there's plenty on Future Shock that sounds dated, from the early 80's synthesizer tones to the almost consciously stiff-sounding hip-hop beats that permeate every track. But dig a little deeper, and it's clear this is supremely intelligent dance music, with a combination of producer-bassist Bill Laswell's Kraftwerk-influenced industrial production and Latin percussionist Daniel Ponce's Bata drum, Pete Cosey's screeching guitar--which echoes his work with Miles Davis's 1970s band--Sly Dunbar's rock-solid funk drumming, and Grand Mixer D.S.T.'s radical (for the time) turntable scratching. And, of course, there's "Rockit", the track that introduced a generation of young listeners to Hancock and break-dancing robots in music videos. All in all, a reissue well worth revisiting. --Ezra Gale

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I, Robot.......2007-01-26

The legs of one of the robots in the fantastic video for Rockit says it all; grooving to the funky beat while moving in a tight circle, keeping in step with the turntable scratches and driving the beat where dub, hip-hop and jazz became a new dynamic in the studio. Everybody dance now!

Future Shock was a new sensation when released in early 1983, as Herbie Hancock (and his Rockit band) & Bill Laswell teamed up to deliver electronics with funk, fusion and a sprinkling of avant-garde.

Rockit garnered a Grammy award for best R&B instrumental performance, while the video captured five awards - including Video of the Year - in the first MTV Video Music Awards show.

The CD has five cuts sandwiched between Rockit and Rockit (Mega Mix), the latter not on the original release. A true gem is Future Shock, a Curtis Mayfield composition. Earth Beat and Rough pump the funk through the speakers, while Hancock lets the jazz notes do the talking in T.F.S. and Autodrive.

That the collaboration of Hancock and Laswell was unable to reproduce the magic in subsequent releases speaks greatly about the quality found in Future Shock.

5 out of 5 stars Is it HERBIE or is it LASWELL?.......2006-08-10

Herbie's alway's had his hand on the pulse of music, especially cutting edge stuff. He hooked up with Bill Laswell just when Laswell started an incredible run of "production jobs" that continues on through the 90's, and beyond. It's hard to figure just WHO get's the most credit here. Who cares? If you like it, dig! If you don't think it's "jazzy" enough, that's cool too, because it's very hip-hop/beats oriented (no guest "raps" but some cool soul vocals). A jazz artist incorporating the use of turntables and a whole array of synths and such-- read the liner notes with all the folks who appear here. One can't expect "Kind of Blue" now can you? Get funked up!

4 out of 5 stars The bonus track is not so great........2006-05-19

I remember this album from when it first came out. I was just a kid then and bought the album because of the video for Rockit. I soon came to like all of the other tracks on the album as well. People I knew at the time expressed mixed opinions about the album, such as whether or not it was "jazz" or if it was worthy of Herbie Hancock's reputation as a "legit" musician or whatever. But like another reviewer on this site has said, this CD is pretty much full of mediocre R&B filler. But in my opinion, it is worth listening to. I like it. I'm not a serious music critic, so for people with a more casual interest I would say that this album is a lot of fun and worthy of your purchase price.

However... the bonus track is not very good at all. It really seems like a lame attempt to take up time on the CD. What it is is another version of Rockit with tons of extra (and might I add, profane) sound bites and samples piled on top of the mix. On my player I always skip this track. But the rest is still pretty cool in my humble opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, risk taking album from Herbie Hancock.......2006-04-10

I'd like to defend this album, because between his more mellow jazz albums of the 70s and what he's doing now in 2005-2006, this 1983 album is still one one of my favorites from Herbie Hancock. Herbie took a big risk with going for the hip-hop sound and he succeeded. Every one of the six original songs are dynamite, are edgy and very creative for that period. I still love Rockit, perhaps one of Herbie's finest performances. Its mix of urban jazz and the turntable scratches of hip-hop was very unique. It has some hard hitting beats that could even rival most of Run-DMC and LL Cool J's albums. I couldn't stop playing the 45 single of the single and album versions for several months! It's still played over 2 decades later! The video for that song was phenomenal with the art direction and the marionettes moving to the song's beats. The album's very keyboard oriented, but Hancock kept the jazz style intact on most of the songs. I don't think he sold out,as some purists say. I think this album helped make him a more respected jazz musician and artist later on. Even if the album's massive success took him by surprise, he did it with class and he is still respected today. Very creative, chance-taking and wonderfully performed and done!

It's hard to imagine that this album's bleak-spirited songs, grinding modern rock tack, and contemporary production aura are all the products of a musician who scored his first American chart hit in 1972, then was written off again a decade later after a string of MTV-fueled hits--including the classic "Jessie's Girl." But this is indeed the same Rick Springfield, his former bubblegum-rock incarnation belied by a tough musical stance that would be the envy of many a rocker half his age. But one doesn't have to dissect the slinky, eastern-inflected guitar hooks and fat, thumping bass of the wry "Jesus Saves" (chorus: "Jesus saves white trash, baby like you") very far to find that Springfield's songwriting instincts remain rock-solid. It's just as surprising to find that this self-produced album is the product of ears that have been anything but dormant in recent years, and savvy--or is it idealistic?--enough to turn a spunky, thrashed-up take of the Easybeats' 60's jewel "I'll Make You Happy" into a bridge across the generations. Cynical ears may mistake it all for a pose; if so it's an acting job the former soap opera star should be proud of. --Jerry McCulley

This disc is quite different from the "Jessie's Girl" phase (if you will) that I grew up with. That being said, I still love this disc and singer/songwriter very much. I'm sure that I will buy anything that he puts out in the future.

Coming from a fan of well forever-I'm as old as he is and have been to his concerts and have everything he's ever done. Not all have been great and he even lost me with a few-those of you not into the spiritual "out there" stuff he's done will know what I'm saying. but this, this is like going to rock heaven. I was allright!!! He's back. If you are only into his softer ballads don't bother. If you liked most of rock of life get ready to rock some more!

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise.......2006-11-05

I have been a fan of Rick Springfield's since 1972 when I first saw him on "American Bandstand" it might have been his first American TV appearance. I then got his second album, "Comic Book Heroes". I have followed, on and off, his music since then.

After having not listened to anything new of his for a long time I got back into the groove and bought SDAA. I was surprised, pleasantly surprised at how wonderful this album is start to finish.

Gone is the pop of "Jessie's Girl" this a rock and roll album. Hard driving guitars and fantastic drum lines each song is better than the next. Even my husband who is lover of Hard Rock likes this album.

I find it to be a mature album from an artist who wanted to, no needed to grow up even at this late age. I HIGHLY recommend this cd! Play it loud!

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC ROCK OF THE 80s.......2007-05-17

Again if you're collecting great rock albums, this is one you shouldn't miss! This is a great album! Ian Gillan was still young and can sing very high notes. You can hear Bernie Torme screeching guitar in most of the songs. Man he's great in making the guitar weep and scream! These are some reasons why he had a short stint with Ozzy after Rhandy Rhoads died.

I've seen this group in early eighties in the Philippines during their tour. What a great band! Each member of the band did their piece in the concert.
Mr. X on the bass, he's a good bass player and he's one of those guys who threw the guitar on air and comes back to his hand striking the chords with all his might. Mr. Y the drummer did a solo too, he's great too. At that time I thought he was Ian Paice coz they were headlined as Deep Purple before coming to the Philippines.

Some of their excellent albums are: Mr. UniverseMr. Universe and Double TroubleDouble Trouble

Others are mediocre albums: Clear Air Turbulence[, Child In TimeChild in Time, Magic and Glory Road[ASIN:B000NA2U46 Glory Road]]

5 out of 5 stars Rocks greatest singer finally gets remastered !.......2007-05-17

What can you say about Ian Gillan ? Let me start with that he is the greatest singer in rock n roll (for about 40 years now) and it is about time all the Gillan cd's get remastered .
Edsel (the label these are on) has done an outstanding job on these reissues . The remastered sound is awesome , the bonus tracks are excellend and the booklets are top notch !
This one , "Future Shock" is one of Gillan's finest moments . The 10 songs from the original release are all first rate classic rock n roll songs . There are no filler songs here . There is also 8 bonus tracks included . They are singles and b sides of singles and once again , these are not fillers , they are all first rate songs . This is really a very strong cd from start to finish.
The guitar player , Bernie Torme , is fantastic on this release , he has a great unique sound .
The booklet has a 1 page note from Mr. Gillan himself , it has great historic liner notes , the lyrics to the original release songs and one of the bonus tracks and some great pictures and artwork.
If you never listened to Gillan's solo material , this is a fine place to start , you won't be disapointed .

5 out of 5 stars An Acquired Taste.......2007-03-28

You have to appreciate the genius that is Richard O'Brien to truly enjoy this soundtrack (and the movie, for that matter), but it's great. Buy it if you care to. Not for the casual experimenter, though.

5 out of 5 stars Shock Treatment: The Original Sound Track.......2006-11-10

Excellent!

It's been 25 years since I have seen the movie... The music is as fresh as ever.

4 out of 5 stars RICHARD O'BRIEN-CRACKPOT OR GENIUS?--YOU DECIDE.......2006-09-05

Is Richard O'Brien a crackpot or a genius is a loaded question since he is both. "Rocky Horror" was straight out genius but "Shock Treatment" nestles comfortably in-between. The music and lyrics when they are not weird, are strange and when not strange, bizarre but in such an oddly appealing way that praising or damning the music defies logical assessment.

Whether one tends to be pro or con vis a vis the music(I am definitely pro) it perfectly matches the movie which is most definitely weird, strange and bizarre but unlike "Rocky Horror"
both the CD and the movie lack the dazzingly lip-smacking performance of Tim Curry as Frank-n-Furter.

As is the soundtrack has many delightfully nutty ditties and this time instead of the vocally challenged Susan Sarandon as Janet her role is sung by Jessica Harper who not only sings much much better but she has an unusually erotic tone in her voice which is a glove perfect fit to the music.

Only gave 4 stars because as a sort of sequel to "Rocky Horror" I still miss Tim.

1 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2006-08-21

It's hard to believe that after writing possibly the greatest soundtrack in motion picture history, Richard O'Brien could have turned out something so stupendously, abysmally awful.

Reagarded as follow up to Rocky Horror, this is an underated musical in its own right

4 out of 5 stars Effective, hardcore gangsta rap.......2006-12-11

MC Ren's first full-length solo album following the breakup of NWA was his 1993 effort "Shock of the Hour," released on Ruthless Records. I am perplexed by how much this album is underappreciated. While obviously not on the same creative level of "The Chronic" or "Death Certificate," this is a very entertaining album and among the best to come from the post-NWA solo album offerings. This album is well executed, standard gangsta rap, and if it were not so overlooked, it might be one of the archetypical albums of the genre. MC Ren was always one of the most solid rappers in NWA, and his evident talent continues on this solo release. He covers much more interesting topics lyrically than Dre ever did, and even the run-of-the-mill gangsta rap fare is executed very well. The production is impressive, showing a very good style of the pre-g-funk west coast rap musical style. The beats and bass are hard, and there is usually a whiny synth or instrumental sample on most of the tracks. The beats just sound hard and really complement Ren's angry monotone. "Shock of the Hour" is really hard to find now, but it's still an album I highly recommend.

The album begins with "11:55," a dark and dangerous sounding intro that sets the mood for the album very well. "Same Old S..." speaks of a day in the life of a famous rapper, the production is solid and tough sounding. "F... What You Heard" is a highlight for me, the bass and synth-heavy music sounds really good with Ren's calmly delivered but angry raps. "All Bulls... Aside" continues in the same way, a threatening and well-produced song. "One False Move" has a chaotic sound both musically and lyrically. "You Wanna F... Her" speaks of a woman who is not as innocent as someone obviously believes, the beat is excellent. The album really picks up here, the music taking a more philosophical approach lyrically. "Mayday on the Front Line" is another warning kind of song but it just comes across as really well done. "Attack on Babylon" is one of the best songs on the album, discussing the thought process behind urban violence. "Do You Believe" is funky and challenges mainstream thought. Ren lends some time on the mic to his young proteges on "Mr. F... Up," and the album ends with by far its best track, the title song. This song paints an apocalyptic picture of black supremacy and judgment day, it's really disturbing and ends the album perfectly.

"Shock of the Hour" is a really underrated album from one of the west coast's pioneering and most interesting rap artists. MC Ren never gets the respect he deserves, but if more people heard this album they definitely would. This album is just overall a very solid and enjoyable album of hardcore west coast hip hop, one that I recommend to all fans of NWA and early west coast.

3 out of 5 stars Great artist but contains to much rhetoric.......2006-08-05

Ren's style and talent, along with the other members, was crucial in making the absolutely phenomenal group that was NWA. His lyrical capacity is more impressive than Cube, Dre, and E. I can't be sure exactly what has filled him with such hatred but that hatred has surely affected the quality of his music, making otherwise great sounding tracks such as Attack on Babylon, and Shock of The Hour, sound more like rhetorical hype anthems rather than artistic expression. Although there are other tracks on the ablum that are not so, should I say, hate-founded, some damage has been done. In all fairness, if it weren't for Ren's admitted use of drugs, one might conclude that Osama Bin Laden had a copy of Shock of the Hour.

5 out of 5 stars When???.......2006-07-09

When are they going to re-release this album?
While not as good as Kizz My.... it's still an excellent album.
There's a couple (if that) skippable tracks but not enough to take away a star.
Great album.
The lyrics, while quite explicit, all have meaning and the beats are jumping.
Worth the price of admission...

Music was so much better back in the day.
Sure, you have your good producers/artists like Timbaland, Kanye, Jay Z... but back in the day, there were so many good choices.
I can't believe some of the tracks 'hitting' today.
I would've thought this new stuff was crap back when this one was new.
Even Ice Cube turned for the worse, he used to be great, what happened?

5 out of 5 stars MC REN is da best NWA Mc.......2005-07-21

He is..trust me..but Ice Cube came with some dope albums too..It's crazy this album is sellin for 44 or more...Get Ruthless Fo Life...his 4rth Lp..Thats even better...I wonder is he going to come out with another..Ice Cube is...peace

My kids and I love this cd, having been introduced to it by one of our local radio stations.

Where we live we're surrounded by the far-right Christian republicans who have signs on their lawns saying things like, "Jesus is the reason for the season," so to be able to laugh with this cd, despite the guilt-inducing, holier-than-thou contest around us, is quite cathartic!
