I bought this CD, and although it contains a few of my all time favorite songs, the sound quality is terrible. All of the accompanying music is washed out, and the vocalists sound like they are using megaphones. I've heard better sound on my car radio. Love several of the tracks, hate the tinny sound.

Lost Soul.......2001-03-18

Unfortunately in this millennium no one has been able to capture the soulful sound that made The Righteous Brothers famous International Recording Stars. Millions of people have enjoyed their number one hits that are on this CD like "Unchained Melody" and "You've Lost That Loving Feelin' ". But unless you have enjoyed the unbelievable sound of Bobby Hatfield pouring his heart out in "I Believe" or the combined intertwining soulful sound of Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley giving you their hearts in "You'll Never Walk Alone" you will never truly know the talents of The Righteous Brothers. Unless the Various Record Companies who recorded the brothers decide to re-release the record albums produced in the 1960's the true Blue Eyed Soul of The Righteous Brothers will be lost in the last Millennium.

JJ Cale's songs have been covered by inumerable other
artists---among them Eric Clapton, (cocain,after midnight)Lynrd Skynrd, (call me the breeze)Maria Muldar,many others. clean,crisp, songs recorded cleanly and crisply,
short and to the point. If you are looking for meandering,
"epic" arena rock, this is not for you.If you are looking for
the music those guys listen to in the bus on the way to
the show---this is it. JJ Cale is a guitar player as skilled
as anyone you have heard---give it a try--this is the way it's
supposed to sound.

Tuneful and memorable songs.......2004-12-24

This great collection of hits demonstrates what a versatile artist the singer-songwriter, guitarist and singer Joan Armatrading really is. Joan was born in St Kitts in the West Indies and moved to the UK in 1958. Her first two albums received critical acclaim but it was only with the eponymous third album that she made the UK charts with the single Love And Affection.

This Universal Masters collection is not arranged chronologically since Love And Affection made he charts in 1976, followed by Rosie, then Me Myself I and All The Way From America. Me Myself I was also her first hit in the USA. I'm Lucky and Drop The Pilot (from the album The Key) followed in 1983.

The acoustic Down To Zero is a welcome inclusion from her earlier folk work, whilst Me Myself I and Drop The Pilot are out and out pop songs and very catchy too. There are most comprehensive compilations of Armatrading's work but this album contains the essence of her unique and original talent.

Good, but not all of the best.......2005-01-06

With the exception of her incomparable version of La Vie En Rose from Portfolio (1977), this collection focuses entirely on Grace Jones' post-disco output of the 1980s. It completely ignores her quite worthwhile 1970s disco albums like Muse & Fame and the later pop works like Bulletproof Heart and Inside Story.

The hits include Chrissie Hynde's composition Private Life, Jones' ominous version of Daniel Miller's Warm Leatherette, the sensual Pull Up To The Bumper, her interpretation of the Roxy Music classic Love Is The Drug, the fierce Demolition Man and the romantic I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango). But the other tracks are great too, especially the polyrhythmic Nipple To The Bottle, My Jamaican Guy and the torch song Walking In The Rain.

This album is of course not comprehensive and the most glaring omissions are the brilliant disco anthem I Need A Man and the evocative The Apple Stretching, a beautiful song about New York. At this stage, he best Grace Jones compilation album is the one simply titled The Collection (on Spectrum), with 16 tracks.

Still, this Universal Masters Collection album is a worthwhile showcase, mostly of the art-rock/new wave side of this innovative vocalist. It would be great if Island someday issued a compilation from those first three disco albums: Portfolio, Fame and Muse. Until then, hang on to your vinyl!

Legendary for her looks, style, attitude and amazing talents.
Grace Jones first appeared in the mid 70's working in NYC night clubs and eventually landing a record deal with Island Record in 1977. Her disco years were great producing such hits as "La Vie en Rose" which is a beautiful rendition of the original and also landing a #1 spot with her then theme "I Need a Man". As disco faded in the early 80's Grace changed with it; she hooked up with Jean-Paul Goude and together they created the Grace we all know today; the fierce "In your face" personality that's been utilized in movies, on stage and in records. Teaming up with Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare resulted in three of the best records of the eighties: Warm Leatherette (1980), Nightclubbing (1981) and Living My Life (1982) producing such hits as: Private Life, Love Is the Drug, Pull Up to the Bumper, Demolition Man, I've Seen That Face Before and My Jamaican Guy. After the initial album releases she took three years off to become a movie star in such movies as: Conan: The Destroyer, the James Bond flick "A View to a Kill" and more recently in Eddie Murphy's "Boomerang". Her biography followed in 1985 resulting in one of her most successful singles "Slave to the Rhythm". Inside Story and Bulletproof Heart followed in 1986 and 1989.

Almost There...!.......2004-01-20

As I said, almost there! ever since Island Life came out in 1985 there's never been a compilation of Grace's career.
Island Life was ok, even though it was missing some tracks from Grace's career, it had the necessary songs to complete a proper compilation. And with this compilation Grace's music is being re-introduced to the public eyes. The collection covers songs such as "Private Life" an exellent opening to the Parisian enigma of "I've Seen That Face Before". The compilation is fine, it also includes the lovely ballad songs "Breakdown" and "Inspiration". Plus her rocky rendition of "Love Is The Drug" she really does a very nice job with this songs. Another great song is the 12"inch version of her classic hit "Nipple To The Bottle". But what I don't understand is why "Slave To The Rhythm" and "I Need A Man" were left out?. 13 tracks including the classic hits. A fine compilation, but some missing scores was unfortuantely left out. Give it a try won't ya.

I loved this compilation of fifteen best-ever Sergio Mendes songs of all-time starting off with "Mas Que Nada" to the very last track, an instrumental version of "Desafinado." The group is better known not only for their repertoire of awesome Brazilian music but also Pop/Jazz standards as well with upbeat, dazzling and lively rhythms combined with splendid vocal harmonies.

If you love an eclectic blend of Standards, Pop and Bossa Nova music from the creative pens of Cole Porter, Burt Bacharach & Hal David, John Lennon & Paul McCartney, Alan & Marilyn Bergman, Michel Legrand, Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel, Jorge Ben and Antonio Carlos Jobim, then give this CD a listen and enjoy the music. You'll definitely love it.

Some of the highlights are Lennon and McCartney's famous songs "Day Tripper," "Norwegian Wood" and "With A Little Help From My Friends."

My number one personal favorite from this collection is a beautifully arranged and rendered song titled "So Many Stars" composed by Sergio Mendes himself and the lyrics were penned by the creative husband-and-wife songwriting team of Alan & Marilyn Bergman. The lovely vocals belong to Lani Hall, the original vocalist of the group.
