Under its enigmatic title lurks a remarkably entertaining little show. The Drowsy Chaperone is a droll Canadian import that's part homage to the musical theater, part spoof. Narrated by the unnamed Man in Chair (Bob Martin), the show basically reenacts a 1920s musical named "The Drowsy Chaperone." This allows the creative team to match an inspired collection of familiar 1920s types---the flapper (Sutton Foster), the cad (Troy Britton Johnson), the zinger-slinging diva (Beth Leavel), the Latin lothario (Danny Burstein), the zany character actors (Georgia Engel, Edward Hibbert)---with witty, well-crafted pastiches of songs of that era. Penned by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, the tunes are instantly hummable, while the ensemble cast is uniformly superb---you know the standard is high when the awesome Sutton Foster doesn't even stand out that much. Thankfully, the "meta" concept doesn't lead to arch-irony and detachment. A genuine affection for what makes musicals so fun shines throughout, making this a real keeper of an album. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Hysterical! Genius! A Treasure!.......2007-06-27

I live in the midst of the theatre district in NYC and see tons of Broadway shows on a regular basis. I can honestly say I can't remember laughing harder than the first time I saw "Drowsy..." When Sutton Foster did her "Show Off" number I fell out of my seat, overheating with hysterical laughter. I've seen the show 3 times so far -- which is a first for me. The CD is great, too. Buy it and sing along! If you like over-the-top, unique, clever musical comedy, this is the show for you, baby!

5 out of 5 stars Hysterically hilariously funny.......2007-06-20

I saw this show with the original cast and found myself in the aisle . . . literally. I had an aisle seat orchestra Row G. Wow! This has got to be the funniest show I have ever seen. Bob Martin, Sutton Foster, Beth Leavel, and Danny Burnstein could not have done it any better. Energy was high, score was magnificant, and dialogue had me rolling. This is a fantastic show for teens to seniors to sit back, relax, and have a terrific time. Amazing!

5 out of 5 stars awesome!.......2007-06-17

i saw this show on broadway, and if you know anything about it you know that it is a 1920s musical that "the man in the chair" is adding his little comments all throught it. the cd includes most of them. it is fantastic, although i don't reccommend seeing the actual show on broadway, the cd is great and the songs are fun and catchy!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-06-10

Just saw the play in NYC and the soundtrack captures all the fun. If you've not seen the show yet, go now! You'll love it.

1 out of 5 stars Snoozefest!.......2007-05-17

I must say the score doesn't live up to it's praise, completely boring! This almost put me to sleep! I had the misfortune of borrowing this CD from a friend and (with an open mind) can say the music from a supposedly good MUSICal is just plain boring...aborrida...need I say it in any other language for you? Now, I'm not denying the show isn't good, but how can a musical be good when the MUSIC in it is monotonous and unimpressive? Riddle me that! I can say one good thing: they got "drowsy" right in the title!

The Bacon Brothers say it best on this hilarious CD's title track: "Poultry in motion is a beautiful thing." So is a record that grabs you by the funnybone from its opening (the Seldom Herd's "Cows") and doesn't let go till the final note is clucked. Sandra Boynton, whose illustrated board books have become as much a part of every toddler's reading list as Mother Goose, makes a convincing case here that authors can succeed brilliantly as very silly songwriters. Meryl Streep, Laura Linney, Kevin Kline, Natasha Richardson, and fourteen other performers all qualify as contenders for king and queen of the coop, and they whoop it up enough to guarantee the most enjoyable sing-along ever. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars LOVE it!!.......2007-02-23

My son just got "Dog Train" for his first birthday. I don't know what his opinion on it is yet, but I love it! I love it so much that I ran out to buy a couple more as gifts for my son's playgroup friends. That's when I saw "Philadelphia Chickens" and "Rhinosaurus Tap". I bought both and am completely in love with "Philadelphia Chickens". The songs are really catchy and grown-up enough sounding that I don't get that crazy feeling that I get after listening to other kiddies CDS over and over. Chances are pretty good that I'll be buying a bunch of them as gifts too!

5 out of 5 stars My 2 year loves this CD.......2007-02-18

My 2 year is loves animals and since this CD has a different song for every animal she loves it. She also loves the Belly button song since we have the Belly Button book. I would recomend it for 2 and up. We bought it when she was younger but only recently started requesting the 'Cow Music'

4 out of 5 stars Off beat fun.......2007-01-05

This album is very funny! The songs are humorous and dramatic which makes it PERFECT for my little performer. And as an added bonus, there are some surprising voices added to the mix. However, this is not the standard children's album. It's quite eclectic and off beat. You will "get it" much more if you know Ms. Boynton's books.

Few vocalists equal the expressive subtlety of Beth Orton, whose fourth album is both her most musically spare and artistically complex to date. Not only does the production and backing by Jim O'Rourke (known for his work with Sonic Youth and Wilco) capture Orton's vocal style at its most unstudied and unvarnished, the lack of embellishment focuses all the more attention on her songwriting. From the jazzy phrasing on the deceptively jaunty "Worms" through the haunting "Feral" and the amazing grace of the closing, hymnlike "Pieces of Sky," Orton's songs give voice to the sort of knotty, prickly emotions that are as hard to define as they are deeply felt. Most of the musical dynamic features piano or guitar over an elemental, insistent rhythm section, making the coloring of an occasional string section ("Conceived"), harmonica ("Absinthe"), or accordion ("Safe in Your Arms") all the more striking. As an indication of the emotional range of this musical minimalism, the title cut is soothing enough to please fans of Norah Jones, while "Heartlandstruckstop" is as edgy as Patti Smith. --Don McLeese

3 out of 5 stars I only listen to it unintentionally..........2007-04-30

Comfort of Strangers sits next to all my other Beth Orton albums in my iTunes playlist (Trailer Park, Central Reservation, Daybreaker), and it never gets listened to unless I do a listen-through of Central Reservation and then forget to switch to something else once Comfort of Strangers follows. Despite multiple listens, these songs are just not growing on me in the way that all of Orton's other albums that I own did. Even Daybreaker, which I found originally to not be as captivating as Central Reservation, is well-loved by this point.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful cd ..................2007-03-04

I've listened to this cd 3 times now, and each time I take away a little bit more. To me, this is an excellent cd, with many exceptional tracks. My favorites are Rectify, Conceive, Comfort of Strangers, Shopping Trolley and Heart of Soul.

These tracks are expressive and compelling, to me. And her voice really works on them. I'll have to go back and give worms another try, since the song doesn't do much for me as of this writing. I really love the vulnerability in her voice, though for some it comes across as whiny. Not for me. I think she's great, and I'm really enjoying her more organic style.

5 out of 5 stars This album will creep up on you.......2007-01-18

I got this album from a friend who told me that it was one of those albums that had really gotten under his skin, and that I had to listen to it a few times to give it a chance. I liked some of the songs right off: worms, place aside, safe in your arms; I was definitely prone to skipping around a lot. As I kept listening, though, I started to see new things in almost all of the songs and the album as a whole really started to get to me. Her lyrics are incredible, phrasing things that I had felt but hadn't been able to articulate, and she has a particular way of emphasizing the important things with subtle vocal changes, like the repeated lines at the end of pieces of sky: "there's so many people who need to know that you're still with them even when they don't know" and her voice rises and almost cracks on the 'you're'. In contrast to the sort of numb feel of the rest of the song, it highlights the desperate attempt to accept that it's over and time to move on. I find myself doing that a lot with this album, analyzing little things...and I recommend it to pretty much anyone who likes that kind of thing, especially someone trying to come to terms with their own complicated relationship issues (which, really, is most people).

3 out of 5 stars After Only a Few Listens.......2007-01-10

This release has the typical melancholy sound that Beth Orton is known for and if you are looking for that quintesential mellow mood, this is your music. I have only listened to the entire CD twice, but my initial opinion is that it doesn't have much diversity of style. The songs sound very much the same and do not venture into the more experimental style of songs found on some of her other releases. That said, I will continue to listen to it because often it takes many more times through before a CD grows on a person. It is a nice alternative to the mainstream pop music which draws the listener in with a catchy beat and simplistic lyrics. This latest release, along with almost all of Beth Orton's music can never be accused of that. Her music forces the listener to focus on the lyrics which are often symbolic and her flat key segway doesn't allow you to drift away. This release continues that tradition. It may not be the CD I would recommend for those not familiar with Beth Orton's music but it carries enough interest for fans of Beth's music that I say it's worth a listen.

1 out of 5 stars Hmmmmmmm.......2006-11-28

I'm sorry Beth but your voice gets on my nerves. Cheer up and stop whining. I have listened to 3 of your albums 3 times and tried to give you the benefit of the doubt. It's 3 strikes now and you are out of my collection and into a bottom drawer.

The late '90s spawned a spate of assertive female rockers. Few, however, possess the edgy passion, blues-drenched soul, and whisky-soaked inflections that are Beth Hart's trademarks. Less rough-hewn and more accessible than her 1995 debut, Screamin' for My Supper is nonetheless an emotional and memorable offering from this L.A. native. Hart's vibe--sort of a Fiona Apple meets Mick Jagger, with a liberal dose of Janis Joplin--somehow manages to be her own, while her thoughtful lyrics have a Southern sensibility that touches the heart and soul. This assertive yet fragile new artist, whose songs are as well constructed and executed as her words, could easily share a bill with Sheryl Crow or the Black Crowes, and might wind up stealing the show. -Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-04-22

This was one of those impromptu buys. Hadn't ever heard of her before, just liked the clips and said, "why not?" There isn't a single bad song on here, so how often does that happen? She's a screamer for sure, but it's still melodic and not too downtrodden. Her range of styles is impressive, too. Not too many screamers can do the ballads so well :-)

5 out of 5 stars !!!.......2006-12-03

Beth Hart is bluesy, dramatic and hot. Her voice is textured and hard-edged -- will completely take you away. This album is a wonderful investment with a high 're-playability' factor.

5 out of 5 stars Huge Beth Fan.......2006-10-01

Beth Hart is a unique artist with an amazing, soulful, bluesy voice and uncanny ability to communicate through music.
This album is incredible. The songs are meaningful. Beth's talent, voice and songwriting all come together here. I've had this album for quite awhile and it holds up over time and remains a favorite. The more I listen to it the more I love it and I never get tired of it.
When I first got the album I had my favorites - the obviously catchy "Delicious Surprise" and "Get Your S*** Together" as well as "Is That Too Much To Ask." However, the songs that are not as immediate also become favorites over time. "Skin" and "Mama" are standouts for me. This is not for a superficial listen. If you want bubble gum do not get this album. If you want something more - get it.
I also highly recommend Beth's album "Leave the Light On" and her live CD and DVD "Live at Paradiso!"

5 out of 5 stars Not For Britney, Mariah Or Jessica Fans!.......2006-06-25

This is one female who can sing.LA Song was popular when it came out a few years ago in NZ.She actually recorded a song 'I'll Stay With You' from her next cd 'Leave The Light On' with some of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. This is the cd that earned her radio time.Wake up America, this is a voice that should not be overlooked.NZ, Netherlands and Denmark have taken Beth to heart(no pun intended). It is a shame all it takes in America to have a hit is a Barbie face and bitsy voice.Buy this and start listening to real music.

4 out of 5 stars This Chick Rocks!.......2006-04-14

What ever happened to singers who feel what they're singing? Beth Hart is one in a million nowadays. Although this album came out in the late 90s, I finally got a listen. I was familiar with the song "L.A. Song", but I have to say that they missed the boat with releasing it as the single. It's not even close to being the best song on the album. The best ones are "Get Your Sh*t Together", "Delicious Surprise" (which has been covered by Jo Dee Messina, but this is much better), and "Is That Too Much To Ask". I also like the song "Mama" which reminds me a bit of Amanda Marshall.
Do yourself a favor and get this album. Like another reviewer said, it may be a case of the artist being better than the material, which is why I'm only giving it 4 stars instead of 5. Some of the songs are just ok. But the ones that are great are completely worth buying the entire cd.

Peter Allen was an Australian gay man who was once married to Liza Minnelli and was still officially in the closet when he died of AIDS in 1992. It's obvious that when it comes to sheer drama, Allen's life is pretty hard to beat, and Hugh Jackman's portrayal in this bio-show terrifically brings home the music man's energy and inner contradictions. Too bad his life's intensity wasn't reflected in Allen's milquetoast songs, which are generously sprinkled throughout the show. Technically, Jackman's not the best singer (Brian Stokes Mitchell continues to rule Broadway in that regard), but his charisma is undeniable. His take on "I Go to Rio" is appropriately high octane, for instance, while "I Still Call Australia Home" (Oz's unofficial anthem) is rather poignant. As Judy and Liza, respectively, Isabel Keating and Stephanie J. Block try hard to emulate their models' vocal styles, which can be really distracting. Overall, though, this album is mostly for serious fans of either Allen and Jackman. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars The Boy From Oz-Original cast CD.......2007-05-14

I love the music from this show and the CD is fantastic. Hugh Jackson is great in this musical and I am just sorry that I didn't have enough sense to go see it when it was on Broadway.

5 out of 5 stars An exellent recording with great cast.......2007-02-22

I am very pleased with this CD: I wanted to hear the full score of 'The Boy from Oz' as I wanted to have an idea of Hugh Jackman's singing, and I was not disappointed. I loved the music, and the structure of the musical, and Mr Jackman's performance, which is exeptional. This CD is especially great as there is no video recording of the show and the original Broadway cast recording is the only chance to get impressions of this great musical.

5 out of 5 stars disappointment.......2007-01-10

I loved the CD but was confused because I misunderstood my choice. I thought I had ordered a DVD. I would love to have the DVD.

4 out of 5 stars A great collection of catchy tunes!.......2006-08-12

I admit to knowing nothing of Peter Allen. I purchased this CD because I'm an admirer of Hugh Jackman and had seen the "Oklahoma!" DVD (also available here at Amazon, and the best production of "Oklahoma!" I have ever seen). I was impressed with the nice liner notes and the fact that they include a synopsis of the plot so you can follow along and know what is going on with each song. Also, all the song lyrics are included as well as some photos from the stage production. Jackman is in excellent voice for this and the female leads who play Judy Garland and Liza Minelli are also fine singers. Whether you enjoy Peter Allen or not, you will enjoy this CD.

I would give it 5 stars except that the overall volume level is a bit low in comparison with other CDs, but all you need do is crank your stereo a bit, then it's great.

3 out of 5 stars Dazzling Performances.......2006-07-25

While clearly, this is not the greatest of musicals and it doesn't pretend to be, it is an oppurtunity to hear several incredible, powerhouse performances. Yes, Hugh Jackman is amazing as Peter Allen, without trying to copy him at all. But, the other performers keep up with him. Isabell Keating is unbelievable as Judy Garland. She DOES copy Garland, in singing, mannerisms and looks and she is wonderful. Jarod Emmick, as always, is fantastic. One of the best voices on Broadway.
The entire score is Peter Allen's and Jackman makes the most of every song. A great CD for Allen, Jackman or musical theater fans.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

There's no way to offer a shortcut description of what Beth Orton sounds like. There are so many musical styles pulsing through Central Reservation--jazz, folk, pop, rock, and dance--that the album could easily have ended up an empty exercise in genre-hopping. Instead, it's a bracing example of mongrel music at its best as Orton carves out a new musical vocabulary with deep roots in familiar sounds. --Keith Moerer

Amazon.com

Is Beth Orton the folkie Beck? Or is Beck an Orton with beats? Since both graze from genre to genre like goats feasting on whatever strikes their fancy, drawing parallels is tempting...and perhaps pointless. After all, both artists were born in 1970 and emerged at a time when musical categorization became an exercise in futility. English thrush Orton's third album--like her critically hailed debut and the Best Bit EP--prompts one to flash on an ever-swelling range of influences. Since she's blessed with the rich, warm voice of a true pop singer, it's easy to imagine her sharing space on some out-of-time radio playlist with Dusty Springfield (listen to the elegant, string-laden "Sweetest Decline"), except Orton's music draws on '90s trip-hop elements as well the jazzy folk of Tim Buckley and vet Terry Callier (reprising his Best Bit cameo). Orchestration, upright bass, vibes, and Orton's own resolute guitar give long, languid tracks such as "So Much More" and "Pass in Time" an Astral Weeks-like feel. All those touchstones and no fewer than six producers might imply that Central Reservation is something of a mishmash. In truth, Orton's overriding vision is all that's needed to create cohesion. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars file next to nick drake........2007-02-13

this is a stunning piece of work that sits comfortably next to the recordings of nick drake. each artist conveys a beautiful spirit of wistfulness, melancholy, and joy at any given turn. beth orton has the voice of an angel and to me this is her strongest set of songs, so far. I almost alway listen to this cd late in the evening because it seems to demand a quiet setting to bring out its riches in their fullest. i highly highly recommend that you get this.

5 out of 5 stars Good selection of songs.......2006-05-24

I am working my way backward with Beth Orton, I started with "Comfort of Strangers" and now "Central Reservation". Her work comes from so many different places, folk, rock, country, some electronic. I like it all so far, but am a bit partial to the folky stuff. I like the lyrics on this album, I find them poetic and moving at times. Most of her music does take a while to get into, but most challenging music does. I think her voice is in good spirits on "Central Reservation". I like all the songs on this CD, but "Sweetest Decline" and "Blood Red River" are the ones that move me the most.

BETH ORTON....IS A NAME WHICH I INSTINCTIVELY REALISED THAT I M GONNA STAY WITH HER FOR A LONG TIME WHEN I FIRST HEARD HER IN CHEMICALBROTHERS ALBUM ..SINCE THEN I FIND ALL HER RATHER ANYTHIN SHE SINGS AMAZIN ..AND INNOCENT ...I LOVE U ...BETH

4 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Great.......2005-09-09

Okay, let's be honest--Beth Orton is NOT the best singer out there. She could benefit from a few more voice lessons. That said, she isn't painful to listen to, and in fact her song-writing and guitar playing make her someone I even enjoy listening to. A good album, I'd recommend it especially for those who like meaningful lyrics and soulful music.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums I own.......2004-08-09

This album would definately rank among my Top 10 favorite albums of all-time. Deep, sublime, and full of feeling, every song has something meaningful to say. A definate recommend.

Album Description

'Pass In Time' is a collection of songs taken from Beth Orton's three previous albums. Most noted for her subtle vocals reminiscent of 70's singer/songwriters such as Carole King & Carly Simon. Her music is a fusion of graceful acoustic folk, melancholy country-blues, down-tempo trip hop & dubby electronica. Includes the singles 'She Cries Your Name', 'Someone's Daughter' & 'Touch Me With Your Love', alongside B-sides, remixes, collaborations, & rarities. 24 tracks. Heavenly. 2003.

4 out of 5 stars Underappreciated Songstress .......2007-04-16

Beth Orton is a hell of a songwriter with a unique voice. Why she isn't Sarah Mclachlan level as far as popularity is anybody's guess. "Pass In Time" is a collection for casual fans and Beth Orton collectors. (CD#1) The best songs from "Trailer Park", "Central Reservation" and EP "Best Bit". The only thing missing is the touching original version of "Central Reservation". The faster "The Then Again" version is on this set. The new pop song for this album "Same Day" is quite good. "Daybreaker" her 3rd CD gets the short end of the stick. There's only two songs - "Concrete Sky" and "Thinking About Tomorrow". "Paris Train", "Mount Washington" and "Ted's Waltz" - all outstanding numbers belong somewhere in this collection- 4 STARS. (CD#2) Remixes, "B" sides and rarities. More for established fans. The standouts are the Folk songs "Safety" and "Dolphins" - 3 STARS. (THE BOOKLET) Cool photos, extensive liner notes and musicians credits. Beth herself gives thoughts on each song. She's big on Jimi Hendrix and Rickie Lee Jones which makes her all right in my book. 5 STARS. This is a good collection, but not complete from her first three CD's. Beth later released "Comfort Of Strangers" which has a stripped down Americana flavor. For completists "The Other Side Of Daybreak" is a dance remix CD heavy on "Trip-Hop". Beth Orton is something special. This is good place to start for a newcomer.

4 out of 5 stars Fans can never be objective..........2006-04-26

From the OBJECTIVE reviewer...This only thing stopping this collection from a solid 5 star rating is the fact that it includes remixes and some b-sides. Therefore, it ends up being a must have for fans missing some great tracks and too much for someone wanting an overview of Beth Orton's great music.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Beth Primer.......2006-04-19

As another reviewer says, this is a fine place to start lovin' Beth. If you don't know her, you should. Once you do, you will at the very least like her. She - IMHO - is one of the best artists to come along in recent memory. So do yourself a favor, and check her out if you haven't already.

4 out of 5 stars But it's not an album...........2004-12-13

If you're like i was a year ago, and you are not sure where to put your money when it comes to Beth Orton, you'll buy this CD. This collection contains some of her best songs, with a few missing exceptions ("Carmella," "Paris Train," and her rendition of Cat Steven's "Wild World" come to mind), and is a great introduction to her work. It makes for a great gift to someone who seriously needs to be introduced to Beth Orton (one of the best female musicians of our time).

Additionally the second CD features some jewels that any Beth Orton fan will appreciate. For example "Safety" is a sweet and candid B-side. I would have liked more Superpinkymandy material (a rare album she made with William Orbit in 1993), but what it has still makes it a jewel to own.

The only problem with this edition is that it is not an album of hers. To many this will not be an issue, but i am the type of person that prefers to own entire albums. It is essentially a "greatest hits" album. So, it is great if you're money-conscious, or not a huge fan, or buying it for someone else, but because of this i cannot endorse it with five stars (whereas the music itself certainly deserves such a rating).

5 out of 5 stars One gorgeous collection!.......2004-10-31

I first heard Beth Orton several years ago when I got her first her album Trailer Park. Though I was blown away by several of the songs, some of them did not impress me overly. This year a friend told me about the collection and how great it was. Boy, were they right! There's not a bad song on here. Her voice is so beautiful and so emotive it's hard to not get lost in it. Songs such as Thinking About Tomorrow, Dolphins and Concrete Sky are some of my favorites, followed closely by Stars all seem to weep, She cries your name and Stolen Car. This cd is the best purchase I've made recently and will be playing for quite some time.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Klonopin.......2007-01-16

I read a transcript of an NPR review that said Beth Nielsen Chapman meditated each day at the studio while she was recording this album. It shows. It calms and centers me within 30 seconds. Highly recommended

3 out of 5 stars Good voice, but the venerable texts deserve better pronunciation.......2006-11-12

Beth Chapman has a beautiful voice which is well suited to the hymns she chose for this record, but her pronunciation of Latin is only beginner's-level, and it shows that this isn't her usual genre of music. Several of the hymns contain pronunciation mistakes which will be off-putting to people who know these songs well; they all bear the sound of Latin as sung with a very American accent.

The singers on this recording could have benefited from some pronunciation coaching: classical singers need to learn to pronounce Latin well, but Chapman didn't seem to realize they needed it too.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual oxygen........2006-10-17

Mother Teresa of Calcutta said, "Make something beautiful for God." Beth Chapman must have been listening when she produced this collection of hymns. Because of B.N.C.'s experience of personal heart-ache that preceded this recording, there's a touching dose of holy sobriety in her delivery. After listening to some snippets on-line, I first bought this for my Mom who is in her 70s. Since I finally bought another copy for myself a few weeks ago, it has dominated my car CD player. My 28 year old son, who doesn't know this pre-Vatican II repertoire, absolutely loves it. This is timeless, edifying stuff -- no artificial ingredients. Thank you, Beth. I'm so glad I found your Hymns project.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking renditions of sacred music.......2006-07-05

Chapman takes some of the Christendom's most beautiful music and lends a simple reverence to it that works wonderfully well. She's also written a very sweet new hymn to Mary. I buy virtually no music - my collection is already sufficient. But I only had to hear a bit of one song - Panis Angelicus - to get me onto iTunes for this album.

Every single song is perfectly lovely: quiet and rousing, simple and complex, altogether reverent.

Throughout the '90s, Beth Nielsen Chapman was one of the most industrious and literate songwriters in Nashville, penning material for a new breed of female country star, including Kathy Mattea, Faith Hill, Martina McBride, and Lorrie Morgan. However, her own recordings have barely dented the country charts, for the simple fact that they're not really country at all. As a singer and arranger, Chapman owes much to the jazz-folk of Joni Mitchell, while echoing the AAA soul-smarts of Shawn Colvin. Her spiritual sensibility shines on songs like "Sand and Water" and "The Color of Roses," as she confronts personal tragedy with an openness to healing. Chapman's music has gone through various transformations, and what this collection lacks in continuity, it makes up for in the ambition of Chapman's lyrical vision. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars A truly great CD........2006-03-14

A collection of depth and beauty. Haunting melodys and meaningful lyrics. An inspiring piece of work. One of my most played CDs.

5 out of 5 stars If you've never heard of Beth before . . ........2005-10-15

. . . then this is a great place to begin. Many of the tracks are earlier material and songs which Beth has written for other artists who went on to have hits with them, i.e. HAPPY GIRL, as done by Martina McBride and THE COLOR OF ROSES as covered by Bette Midler. Beth's versions are superior, in my opinion. She has a unique and distinctive voice which is capable of generating all kind of emotions in a person. Special mention must be made of the track ALL I HAVE, which still gets much radio play here in the UK. This is so personal, so beautiful and such an intimate love ballad that you can almost imagine Beth is performing this to you in your living room. This lady has the vocal style of the sadly missed and brilliant Eva Cassidy. AMAZING. SAND AND WATER, which was also done by Elton John, was also the title of her album she wrote when overcoming the grief of losing her husband to cancer in 1994, and has been used in ER, as I may have mentioned in my review of it. Great guitar work abounds on this track, both folk and classical influences collide ather well. I will also mention EMILY, which will have even the hardest man tearing up and letting go; LIFE HOLDS ON, which is full of hope, and a world-folk BEYOND THE BLUE with the mind-blowing Gregorian chant at the end - if the guitar riffing sounds familiar you may or may not know that Nelly Furtado ripped it off on one of her recent hits. I could go on, but I'll finish by saying you will be in for a treat. Very hard to fault!

5 out of 5 stars Great disc.......2005-09-14

I enjoy this music and the artist. The songs are for a very laid back feeling and easy to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant singer-songwriter.......2005-07-18

Beth has established herself as one of Nashville's most prolific and successful songwriters (and for that reason she is sometimes classified inaccurately as a country singer), yet her own music owes more to folk, jazz and pop than it does to country music, even though Rodney Crowell and Jim Ed Norman (two noted country record producers) separately produced most of the tracks here. Beth's music has more in common with Joni Mitchell and Shawn Colvin than it does with Faith Hill, Kathy Mattea, Trisha Yearwood, Lorrie Morgan and other country singers who have recorded so many of her songs. As a country songwriter, Beth scored her first number hit with Strong enough to bend (recorded by Tanya Tucker) but, where this compilation is concerned, country fans will immediately recognize Happy girl (a country number one for Martina McBride). I'm sure that country singers have recorded some of the other songs here but none of them are as well known as Happy girl. Eventually, Beth's success as a songwriter spread beyond country music with pop, rock and folk singers recording her songs.

So this is really a collection of quality easy-listening music with other influences, especially folk. Beth has an outstanding, clear voice that makes one wonder why she has had only limited success as a singer, especially given her success as a songwriter. Actually, it seems that Beth chooses to record what she feels like without worrying about its commercial potential, relying on the royalties from her songwriting to provide her main income.

Death is a recurring theme in several of Beth's songs, but Beth likes to downplay it somewhat, trying to be positive (though the sadness and pain is obvious) and never actually using the d word. Maybe this is Beth's way of coming to terms with bereavement - she lost her husband to cancer in the mid-nineties. The opening track (Beyond the blue) is an ode to somebody (her husband?) who has already gone to heaven and who Beth looks forward to joining one day. The title track to one of Beth's albums (Sand and water) declares that we are all alive temporarily - actually, that album is the source for many of the tracks here. In another song (The color of roses), Beth dreams that a deceased person is still alive and says that the human spirit can overcome reality. Beth sings about survival (Life holds on), describing near-death situations.

Beth also looks on the bright side when singing about life, whatever the subject. Beth sings about her current partner (All I have, When I feel this way, I keep coming back to you, Say goodnight), a former partner with whom reconciliation is impossible, but a smile will do (Walk my may), a life-long friend who she rarely meets because they now live far apart (Emily) and returning to her parents for Christmas (Years).

Beth is clearly somebody who has experienced the best and worst that life has to offer, but who also has the ability to pass on those experiences in song. While she is normally happy to let others record her songs, this collection shows that Beth is a brilliant singer who is perfectly capable of recording her own material.

5 out of 5 stars My first Chapman CD and it's great!.......2003-01-22

I saw Beth Nielsen Chapman singing someone else's song in tribute to that artist on a PBS-TV show. I can't remember the show's name or who the show was about. I just remembered being totally impressed by Chapman's singing voice.

I decided to purchase her "Greatest Hit" since I was unfamiliar with her work. This is a purchase that I will never regret. She's well known for her songwriting. I just can't understand why she isn't more popular or as well known for her singing.

I believe that music is the universal language and that the Lord God Almighty made it so that in times of tragedy and travail we have an outlet to lift up our voices to be heard and He does and is quick to respond. In times of gladness a joyful noise is '...a sweet sound to His ears...'
The music on this C.D. has all the elements that give us joy in all those times and speaks to us from the throne room.
