Used in rituals, the xylophone music from Burkina Faso is pulse-oriented and may initially sound monotonous, lacking the clear tags of Western music. Multiple listens, however, reveal that this is music of amazing beauty and complexity. The xylophones here are wooden frame instruments, with calabash resonators providing a distinctively warm, woody tone. The 32-minute "Binkuntina" and the three-minute "Diji" form a calm meditation on death. Another version of "Diji," by the master Pali Tioionti, is a pulse-less marvel of interpretation, where Tioionti's repeated and alternated patterns become a joyous celebration of music-making as they convey a reverent sense of loss.
