There was nothing like the Robeson sound, ever. To describe his deep, rich, perfectly equalized instrument is futile. Go instead to "Balm in Gilead," the opening track, and see if you can listen to the last pianissimo phrase without falling to pieces. Robeson was at his best when the music was slow and the words contained spiritual or social messages. Faster, lighter fare like Kern's "I Still Suits Me" or Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So" find the serious-minded singer out of his element, lacking irony and swing. "Old Man River," though, gets a simple, dignified treatment. It's Songs of Free Men, though, that will just keep Robeson's artistry rolling along, especially in Sony's astonishing transfers. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Robeson on wax.......2007-06-19
I found this album in a thrift store last week, for a couple of dollars. It's the original pressing on four 78 RPM records, in a gatefold format. It's in pristine condition. I really bought it for the incredible cover art, although I hope to be able to listen to it in this format at some point.
The voice, the sound quality and the interpretation.......2004-09-24
Put this on your stereo and if it is good enough the depth and richness of Robeson's voice will make your fillings rattle and your chest rumble. The power of his voice is awesome. This CD is superbly recorded with no audible noise at normal listening levels.
A Voice from the 40s, often dated, often moving.......2002-09-01
"Red diaper babies" have greeted this disc with nostalgic joy, and it captures a time and an aesthetic and a political belief with precision. Anyone interested in the emotional life of the pro-Soviet left of the 1940s should buy this disc. It's something like Henry Wallace set to music. There is much more to Robeson than that, however, and Sony has given us Robeson whole: there are songs by American masters of the musical, there are labor songs, religious songs, as well as the kind of faux-folk songs which the butcher supreme Josef Stalin encouraged and which were not taken seriously inside the USSR (except at gunpoint!!) but which were taken up by dupes around the world. This is Robeson at his least savory - willing propagandist for a vile mass murderer. Songs such as "Native Land" (fittingly, Robeson is referring to the Soviet Union) and the Red Army song are the equivalent of the "Horst Wessel Song", anthems of murder, and it is difficult to listen to the worst of them without retching. On the other hand, Robeson's commitment to American folk culture was real. "Balm in Gilead" is deeply beautiful; "John Henry" is heroic; "By an' By" is both resigned yet hopeful. "Joe Hill" captures an era in labor history. Anyone interested in American popular song should hear these. Turning to Broadway, his "Old Man River" is very fine, though Robeson changed the lyrics for political reasons and Leonard Warren has done the song better. I disagree with the editorial reviewer: "I Still Suits Me" is wonderfully playful and shows Robeson using his gorgeously rich voice to tease and poke fun. However, Marc Blitzstein's "Purest Kind of a Guy" is beyond saving - another example of Robeson recording an unworthy song by a political fellow-traveller. Ugh. But for every miss there are two hits. Robeson performs Mendelssohn's Elijah with nobility, and sings his favorite song, "Water Boy", with joyous pride: "There ain't no hammer that's on these mountains that rings like mine, boys, that rings like mine."
No one need have any fears about the mono sound quality. The orchestra in the second half of the program is at times a little dwarfed by Robeson's voice, but it generally sounds clean and colorful, and the great artist's voice rings like no other.
Robeson at his best.......2000-05-12
It's hard to believe that most of these recordings pre-date the advent of magnetic tape: the CD transfer is superlative. The songs and performance are beyond reproach. Notable is the imaginative packaging in miniature 'record album' format, complete with the original cover art, and a replica of the original Columbia record label applied to the CD.
In response to a previous question: Robeson's performance of Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) can be found on the Vanguard LP entitled "Robeson" (VRS-9037).
some of the greatest songs of the last century.......2000-05-05
In the 1940s, before rabid McCarthyism and racism had taken its toll on him, Robeson made these wonderful recordings of spirituals, classics and pop tunes. Accompanied by the solo piano of the incomparable Lawrence Brown, or by an orchestra, the songs ring out with pride, dignity, skill and unmatched integrity. The shameful treatment that Robeson was subject to from American authorities certainly seem grotesquely absurd to a modern listener. The wonderful version of "The House I Live In" included on this cd should forever kill off any suspicion that Robeson did not love his country deeply. This album ought to be heard by millions of people, world wide. Robeson's voice is nothing less than a glorious high point in 20th century music, and it's hard to think of any recording capturing it to greater advantage.

Just a sampling..........2007-06-18
Certainly there is much more about Alex North than what is contained on this disc. What we get here is a brief concoction of mature writing styles from the Philadephia born, Russian schooled, film composer. Perhaps his greatest contribution has been to incorporate elements of jazz
into dramatic film scores. With the exception of musicals, jazz wasn't even a consideration in a field previously dominated by the classically influenced Steiner, Korngold, and Waxman. North ushered in the next generation of soundtrack composers. This is most evident in his Ocar nominated(1951) " A Street Car Named Desire". It opens with a big piece of symphonic jazz. Swing for the piano and brass with undertones of the blues for the strings. Throughout North cleverly disguises his soundtrack. The audience is unsure if the music is coming from a nearby
jazz club or is supporting the sleazy action taking place in the New Orleans slum flat. Interesting concept that only works while viewing the film. The 1961 "Misfits" (Clark Gable's last film by the way)uses a more subtle line of jazz. Romance between the Gable and Monroe characters carried by the soprano sax. For the 1956 "The Bad Seed" North really gets it right in this story of an 8yr. old unredemptioned psychopathic killer. He uses throughout a harrowing dissonant theme entwined with a an off key childlike French folk song for a chilling demented musical experience. Perfectly hiding the evil behind the innocence of a child. The single selection from 1951's "Viva Zapata" is derived from the rhythm of his followers clacking stones. They view the arrested Zapata on horse back, noose around neck, riding to his death, with a typical Mexican folk like theme buildup for full orchestra. North depicts the brutality of Rome in "Spartacus" through the ominous howling of brass, winds, and percussion. He does give us a beautiful love theme for Spartacus and his affection for a slave girl, North never forgetting his roots and gift for melody. The overall performance of the LSO is good, as with the engineers and annotators. Because the selections are generally short one feels the absence of continuity with the program.

Amazon.com essential recording
These are the major works of Charles Ives (1874-1954), done in magnificent sound--and superlative performances--by Louis Slatkin and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. Three Places in New England--and perhaps this version--belongs in every collection of 20th-century American music. Also a treat here are The Unanswered Question and Central Park in the Dark. These aren't tone poems, quite. (It's hard to say what they are.) But Ives had the knack for providing even his most discordant works a tonal C major core. Usually. This would allow him--as in Symphony 3--to wander occasionally astray. Highly recommended. --Paul Cook
Amazon.com
This is a great Ives disc. You get: (1) his most popular "normal" symphony; (2) his most famous "radical" orchestral suite; (3) his most famous short piece; and (4) a bunch of interesting and little-known experimental pieces. In short, this disc is the perfect introduction to the music of Danbury- -Connecticut's greatest composer--a true American original. The last of the Three Places in New England is a short tone poem called The Housatonic at Stockbridge. It depicts the flow of the Housatonic River past a covered bridge and a village church, where the strains of a hymn tune seem to merge with the mist coming off the river. It's as hauntingly memorable as anything you'll ever hear. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
just right.......2006-10-23
There's something really all-American about the way Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra play Ives here. The very timbre of the orchestra is idiomatic; the Boston Symphony or the Philadelphia Orchestra, by contrast, have opulent, Old World sounds that don't suit these scores as well as the direct, no-nonsense, clean-cut, grassroots, Midwestern sort of sonority produced by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra here. I mean it... it may sound doubtful as written on the page and it's difficult to put it into words, but you'll hear for yourself that St. Louis has got the right sort of sound for this music where other orchestras don't. Furthermore, Slatkin has a real knack for getting intimate, controlled, chamber music-type playing out of large orchestras and sprawling scores. This allows for some really interesting interpretations, and it only serves to enhance the sound of an orchestra already well suited to playing Ives. Add this one to your collection without delay.
A fine representative set of Ives' orchestral music........2001-08-28
The recording is excellent, the performances are as fine as any I can remember. If you have the Orpheus recording, you won't need this one -- and vice-verse -- as far as the two major works are concerned. The pieces are arranged well for a complete Ives concert on a single disc. Highly recommended, but I wish it were midprice like the Eastman disc on Mercury.

This is the voice of Free Men...........2001-11-03
I've had most of these songs on vinyl and they provide me with many wonderful memories. Paul Robeson had an unusual voice: a bass with baritone colorations, huge and powerful, with what can best be described as a mellow urgency. If that description confuses, then you'll just have to get this album and hear for yourself what I mean.
Robeson championed the cause of the working man through his music. Joe Hill is one of my favorites, in which Paul sinks down to the vocal depths with an astounding ease. The Song of the Plains is a rouser, and, if I remember correctly, it's sung in two languages. The Ballad For Americans is here, and it's a classic... and, for me, it's the very definition of America and the great spirit and soul of its people and its greatness. By and By is one of my favorite spirituals, and this is the version I remember. Who sang spirituals with as much richness and depth of feeling as Paul Robeson? Maybe Marian Anderson, whose voice was unique and whose life broke through so many barriers.
This is an album for those who love freedom and the many races who seek it. God bless Paul Robeson for his incredible contribution to humanity.

Decent debut by a (now) great band........2006-04-23
Unlike the rest of the reviews on here, I don't think these guys sound ANYTHING like Simple Plan. In fact, I would consider it an insult if anyone compared my band to Simple Plan, and I'm sure Audio Karate feels the same. This is a solid debut record, but it's nothing great. Just good pop-punk with harsher vocals. Pick up their last record "Lady Melody" instead if you're getting into AK, it slays. "Jesus is Alive and Well..." is one of the best punk songs I've ever heard.
Different from the rest.......2005-10-25
I first heard about this band on the 2003 warped tour disc. I really liked the song they had on there. It was pop punky and had some unusually talented guitarwork. It also sounded very unique. Like something different but same. That song was Nintendo 89. Yes probably a stupid name for a song about a girl but who cares?
well, I finally got around to buying this CD and it has changed my oppinion about this band greatly. First off, the genre these guys belong in is not immediately evident. Sure, pop-punk seems to fit the bill at first but after you consider the overall sound, it's not that easy. The singer's voice sounds almost grunge rock. I can hear traces of a pierre from Simple plan in him, but he sort of growls though. You also need to take the guitarwork into consideration. Out of all the sounds on this disc, the guitar is dominant over the others. it has a twangy sound that really shows a lot of talent. These guys know how to get past the sterotype of: "Pop-punk has to be all power chords". There are even solos here.
So all in all I would probably still put these guys in the pop-punk category, even though they draw from many different musical styles.
It's surprising that this band got signed considering the genre's track record. Bands like Green day, Blink 182, and the Ataris dominate this field of music. There's hardly any room for newcomers. But stop a minute and think about the things associated with these bands. Power chords, whiney voices, immature lyrics, and mass media marketing. None of these things describe Audio Karate. In fact, these guys are nothing like your modern pop punk stereo-type. They are spanish...yes. You can hear it in the guy's voice. They use fender-esque guitars, which are not commonplace for punk music. If anything, this band is a far cry from what we know as modern pop-punk. As a matter of fact, I think they have raised the bar as far as pop-punk goes. They have taken the standard four chord progression method that's been used for years, and replaced it with complex melodies and guitar solos.
I saw these guys live about a year ago. They have played along side bands such as Tsunami Bomb, The vandals, and social distortion. All those bands are big punk rock acts that go the whole nine yards. Mohawks and stud jackets are the usual for them. Yet, Audio Karate is content with a pair of blue jeans and a backstreet boys t-shirt. I have to hand it to them. That takes balls. Still though, there's a clear punk mentality about this band and I like it a lot. They clearly have a serious image that they want to convey.
I was surprised at how nice the production sounded on this Debut. Most I have heard are lacking, but this album is a bar above average. The instruments especially, are done quite well.
I believe we will hear from this band more and more often in time. They have a very dedicated national fanbase that will not dissapoint. There's great things in the future for these dudes. I really like the way they present themselves.
Anyway, if you can find one of Audio Karate's CDs I highly recommend you take the chance and buy it. I think anybody will enjoy their sound. It's very unique and a breathe of fresh air for me personally.
Guitar-Based Punk Rock.......2005-05-26
This is a great album, except that it is a bit slow for a punk rock album and also lyrics are a little repetitive.
Gotta love that ''twangy'' guitar sound though.
Fun Stuff.......2005-01-07
If you like your pop-punk in the style of Simple Plan, then this album is for you--if not, then don't buy it. In fact, the lead singer sounds alot like Simple Plan's! I prefer this CD to their second (Lady Melody)--there seems to be much more screaming and hardcore riffs (less on the melodic side [some irony there]) on Lady Melody. But that's what I prefer. If your tastes go the other way, then Lady Melody would probably be your cup of tea. Whichever one you choose, I think you'll like their sound.
good, but ............2004-04-21
this CD is definately a good buy, for those people who like the same old same old, its tracks are technically good and are really enjoyable to listen to but there is very little "flair" in the album, if you are looking for an album that is life changing or ground breaking this is not it, but if like me you are looking for another CD to fill sometime then this is possibly the best buy you'll find.

less than satisfying..........2005-03-17
I'm afraid this is the least satisfying performance of these fantastic works I've heard to date. The violin sounded weak and uncertain, the piano overwhelming and a bit bombastic, and the Ives idiom seemed missing thruout.
Why oh why doesn't Philips re-release the Druian/Simms performances? So far, none have compared to those guys. OK, I haven't heard Thompson/Waters yet & am looking forward to that. And from what I heard over the web, Fulkerson/Shannon sound encouraging, if you have enough equity in your home to second-mortgage it - I also thought the Zukofsky one was OK, but again not comparable to Druian/Simms, and I gather also no longer available.
Someone needs to rattle Philips' cage on this. I don't think it takes too many letters for them to maybe re-release. I'm starting right now. Join me?

Will Parker's wonderful music-making.......2000-05-19
This re-release brings together several examples of Will Parker's exquisite contribution to recorded American song. Each item on this recording is worth hearing and will give pleasure, both for the quality of the performance and as document of the songs in question. The Griffes, Cadman and Farwell songs are excellent additions to the catalog of American song on disc. Highly recommended.

Looking for Gramm... Found a few surprises.......1999-01-01
Since hearing Donald Gramm's warm bass-baitone on an LP of Rorem/Barber Songs in my school's music library, I have been on a search for recordings of this much missed voice. Every time I hear a recording I am saddened that I was too young to get to hear him in person. This recording of "We Happy Few," a work commisioned for him, is an incredible find. I'm so thrilled that it was reissued on CD. That said... The "Knight's Page" & "Postcards from Italy" with Abraham & Cumming are treats for the ear. Very pleasant surprises indeed. A heartfelt thanks for whoever decided to re-release this rare Donald Gramm gem, and for having the forsight to add such colourful pieces to the release.
