4 out of 5 stars Part of the soundtrack of my high school years.......2006-06-23

I was 15 years old and a sophomore in high school when "Be My Lover" started burning up the U.S. charts toward the end of 1995, and I loved every second of that song: Eurodance-pop perfection, bolstered by the catchy "La-da-da-dee-da-da-da-da" hook and the powerful diva voice of the late Melanie Thornton. As I recall, most radio stations played the edited version without Lane's rap, without which the song seems kind of empty (even though it is cheesy: "Like Boyz II Men I'm on bended knee"... sorry, that line makes me giggle). As much as this song simply smokes, the extended mix which also got some radio play on "mix shows" and the like is even better.
Anyway, when I bought this album I expected an album's worth of songs in the same Eurodance style which I had grown to know and love thanks to Real McCoy, 2 Unlimited, Fun Factory, and (remember "The Rhythm Of The Night?") Corona. To my surprise, there were some slow jams here too! Despite being well-sung by Melanie, as is everything here, the slow jams - especially "I'll Be There" (which is NOT the Jackson Five/Mariah Carey classic) - aren't as memorable as the dancefloor thumpers. "Be My Lover," the title song, "I Love To Love" and "The Heat Is On" are all red-hot, catchy, well-crafted Eurodance classics. And it is the talents of Melanie Thornton that make them really special. In the hands of any other singer these songs wouldn't sound nearly as hot. There's also "Where Do You Go," which is ALMOST the same song that became a hit in 1996 for the Cuban-American trio No Mercy - I say "almost" because the verses are different. Equally fun is Le Click's "Tonight Is The Night," a #89 Hot 100 hit in 1995. (Of course, after Melanie and Lane McCray got together as La Bouche, Le Click continued on with a new singer named Kayo Shekoni who was sort of a soundalike for Melanie, and scored a Top 40 hit in 1997 with "Call Me.")
And there's an oldie here too - that would be "Fallin' In Love," the Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds #1 hit from 1975. The album version is a nice, breezy, mid-tempo pop tune that wouldn't sound out of place on adult contemporary radio. It's certainly far superior to the horrid Eurodance remix that was issued to radio stations after the success of "Be My Lover" and "Sweet Dreams." Actually, "Fallin' In Love" was originally La Bouche's first single in the United States in 1995, but it flopped, getting into the "Bubbling Under the Hot 100" chart for a few weeks and then vanishing. When it was re-promoted to radio the following year, RCA did not re-release the single and CHR stations played it as an album cut (though most of them, unfortunately, played the remix, which was not all that bad on its own, but was horrible compared to the album version).

In short, this is a more-than-competent survey of the mid-1990s Eurodance sound, with a pair of big hit singles and a few extras as well. La Bouche injected some soul into the Euro beats and came up with a winner. Rest in peace, Melanie, you are still missed.

5 out of 5 stars A cd that makes you dream!.......2005-10-04

Who hasn't danced even once with the big smash hit ''be my lover'' way back in 1995? And who hasn't dreamt by listening to the hit ''sweet dreams''? The unique voice of Melanie Thornton - tragically gone in a plane crash in Zurigh in 2001 - along with the rap rhymes of Lane McCray make a combination of passion, adrenaline and of course ... dancing!! Beautiful melodic songs, such as ''fallinf in love'', ''i'll be there'' and ''nice n' slow'', dance hits like ''where do you go'', ''i love to love'', ''the heat is on'', along with one beautiful ballad - ''do you still need me?''and the 2 smash hits we just talked about. The cd ends with 2 great remixes of ''be my lover'' and ''fallin' in love'', plus another big hit ''tonight is the night'', which mysteriously isn't enclosed in the 2001 compilation ''greatest hits'' of the group. A cd that everybody who loves dance music should have. The group may not exist anymore, but will always be remembered, especially Melanie.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Worth Every Penny!.......2005-08-04

Surely the asking price is not too high for something as good as this. I would have paid double for it. Great for the club or a party scene, and great for driving. Just don't get too into it and speed too much.

4 out of 5 stars More Beat For Your Buck (4 Stars).......2004-09-02

Music like this is usually too corny for me to even come close to giving it a chance, but I showed up to my sister's apartment one day and she was playing this CD. By the time I left her place, I was sweaty from all the dancing I was doing. I am by no means a convert, but I do give credit where credit is due. I don't know much about house/trance/dance music, but from what I've heard on this CD and from what I've been told, this is one of the better dance albums out there. A year ago I saw it at a store and bought it used for $1.00 (what a country). There are a lot of great dance tracks on this album and there are some terrible tracks on this album. When the group tries to do ballads like "I'll Be There" and "Do You Still Need Me", they come off as very cheesy attempts to "get deep". Thankfully, those kinds of songs are kept to a minimum. The strength of this album (obviously) are the dance/house tracks. There are house music staples like "Sweet Dreams", "Where Do You Go", and "Be My Lover" on here that make this CD worth the money on their own. They also follow up these classics with strong dance tracks like "Be My Lover (House Mix)", "I Love To Love", "Fallin' In Love (Spike Mix)", "Le Click: Tonight Is The Night", and "The Heat Is On". Great songs like "Nice N Slow" and "Fallin' In Love" have an R&B flavor to them and they help to even things out. Overall, I'd have to say that this album is pretty good. It's not a classic album by any means, but there are some classic dance joints on this album. It has some obvious holes in it, but it's still worth the money if you can find it at a good price. It's sad that lead singer Melanie died in that plane crash back in 2001, but she left behind some great music that will get your body moving. It's always hard to see people go when so much potential is left unfulfilled.

Standout Tracks: Be My Lover, I Love To Love, Where Do You Go (My Favorite), Le Click: Tonight Is The Night, The Heat Is On, Fallin' In Love, Sweet Dreams, Nice N' Slow, Fallin' In Love (Spike Mix), and Be My Lover (House Mix)

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC EURODANCE............2004-08-29

La Bouche was the most played band in Europa in the 90's when i went to nights clubs at this period (I'm 29),Then i was surprised when i hear it recently on a CHR Florida radio Station:It's a gold eurodance band !

5 out of 5 stars We all fans miss you Melanie Thornton!!!.......2007-04-30

This album was her 3rd but she also has "Best Of LaBouche" which was released after she died. Melanie did very very good job and I have all of her albums and my favorite album of hers was All Mixed Up but I love all of her albums. Lane (Melanie's partner) you stay strong!! May God be with you Melanie!! I want to leave this comment in a positive way for you Melanie!! and I have message for all LaBouche fans if you guys wonder what happened to them and wonder why they havent make more albums after the 4rd album of "Best Of LaBouche" was because of Melanie's death

3 out of 5 stars S.O.S........2004-05-15

La Bouche's forte is clearly in meaty singles, not meaty albums. Rapper Lane McCray and show-stopping vocalist Melanie Thornton's debut, "Sweet Dreams" (a double-platinum smash in the States), featured the wonderful trio of instant floor-fillers for the `90s- "Sweet Dreams", "Be My Lover", and "I Love to Love"- but the rest of the album sank under the drab ballads and weak shots at R&B. Their 1998 follow-up, "S.O.S.", follows a similar pattern that loses its drive even quicker. "You Won't Forget Me" (in both of its opening and closing versions) is an irresistible slice of Euro-dance- thumping beats, killer chorus, and mesmerizing harmonies- and one of the best dance-pop singles of its time. The title track comes in second, but compared to "You Won't Forget Me", it's far from running in the same ranks. "Unexpected Lovers" and "Whenever You Want" offer tight club grooves, but the unimagined lyrics and forgettable hooks override everything else and lower the album into the ranks of insipid dance music. Most modern pop releases tend to be little more than one or two hit songs and plenty of background music, but for a Euro-dance act background music is just not allowed. Thornton may insist that "you won't forget me", but "S.O.S." will probably do just the opposite.

5 out of 5 stars Love It! Very enjoyable CD!.......2003-12-11

S.O.S is a very cool album. You have your up-tempo dance songs and your beautiful R&B ballads sung by Melanie Thornton. Every song is worth the listen! Best up-tempo songs are: "You Won't Forget Me," "Unexpected Lovers," "Bolingo (Love Is In The Air)," and "Sending You An S.O.S." Best slow-tempo ballad songs are: "Say It With Love," "A Moment Of Love," and "Say You'll Be Mine." This is a very good CD and everybody should give it a try, especially if you liked their first CD "Sweet Dreams," then you'll probably enjoy this one as well. Melanie's voice amazes listeners once again on this second La Bouche album. Make this one your next buy!

2 out of 5 stars nothing like Sweet Dreams.......2003-05-30

Usually I prefer dance music that's not quite so electronic but have to make exceptions for songs where the vocals are catchy and expressive. Sweet Dreams was so catchy the songs grabbed me anyway. And that goes for most of the songs on that CD and not just the ones I'd heard before.

This CD just ain't got it. Most of the songs sound completely flat and plastic and don't move me at all. I bought S.O.S. because I heard "Bolingo" on a compilation and it really struck me. Unfortunately there's only two other songs on this CD I even want to hear a second time: "Whatever you want" and "Sweet little persuader." Maybe it's the irregular rhythms to these in Melanie's voice - an irregular rhythm is something most music I like all has in common. There's two versions of "You won't forget me" on this disc but I don't care for much either of them (I've heard another version somewhere else I liked better). The song SOS has a catchy beat and rhythm yet Melanie's vocals on this one don't do anything for me. Even when her voice slides, some of the vocals almost sound like they were generated by a computer without the human feeling present in so many songs on Sweet Dreams.

So unless you're a die-hard La Bouche fan or you're willing to buy a CD for just a couple decent songs, take a pass on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't flow as well as Sweet Dreams but nonetheless Great!.......2002-03-21

...I mean, really...this CD is Phenominal and one of the best works of the 90's. Unfortunatly, during all the hype of Aaliyah's death (Note: I am still a fan of hers so i'm not trying to be mean), we seemed to over looked the death of the most Powerful vocalist of the 90's in the World, Melanie Thornton (who sadly died in a plane crash on November 24th,2001): Hands Down. She really blurt out those notes with passion and emotion, like she loved what she did and wanted to make that known to us. This Album itself does not flow together as well as "Sweet Dreams" does, but it is still one that should've got more regocnition then it did.

"You Won't Forget Me" ~ Their first single which was as far as I know the only one released in the US. Unfortunatly It was overlooked and they never play it much if not at all anymore. A nice, fun and danceable number which even has a hint of "Tonight is the Night" from when she was Le Click. (4.5/5)
"Unexpected Lovers" ~ An okay duet with Lane, but could be considered Filler. It's kind of a Tango-ish style but it's hard to describe. (3.5/5)
"S.O.S." ~ Their second single released in Europe. Has a fun Beat to it while Lane gives us the signals of the morsecode Save Our Ship. Great beats and catchy vocals give this one (5.5).
"A Moment of Love" ~ Their third single released in Europe but should've been released in USA. Beautiful melodies, lyrics and vocals from Melanie give us a terrific medium speed song with a hint of balladry. Should've been more popular then it was. (5/5)
"Whenever You Want" ~ Another Duet with Melanie and Lane. I love how they have much more collaboration singing-wise in theis album then in "Sweet Dreams." But still an okay number. (3.5/5)
"I Can't Stand The Rain" ~ A Re-make from an 80's hit, I don't remember the orginal so I can't grade it off of that one. Melanie adds to to Lane's rapping in this one, and with hip hop-ish beats in the background and a powerful message no one can resist this number. (5/5)
"On a Night Like This" ~ One of the album's Highlights, this is definatly one of my favorites. The harmonies and beats are great here...along with a Great message. (5+/5)
"Bolingo" ~ I'm not sure but I think this was a hit in Europe. It's kind of a slowish dance number with Melanie's trademark vocals. Very sexual and definatly gets your attention. There is however a lack of verses and it kinda runs long. (4/5)
"Body & Soul" ~ This song in my opinion is just overall poor in quality. It is extremely repetitive and I personally do not know where they were going in this number (ie: techno, soul, mid spead song?). Definatly should've Not been on the album (1/5)
"Say You'll Be Mine" ~ Oh my God!! I love this beautiful Ballad. Melanie is at her best once again in this number and it has a very Good chorus and harmonies. Definatly one of the Album's standout tracks...but for some reason E Weekly has it as one of the "Forgettable Ballads." Whats wrong with them?! (5+/5)
"Don't Let The Rain" ~ This song is kind of stupid but funny. I give it credit however because it is Lane who sings in this one and only him which is rare with LB. Kind of makes ya want to get up and dance but overall a fun song! (4/5)
"Sweet Little Persuader" ~ Takes a little time getting used to, this number has Great vocals once again after Melanie takes a brake from the following track. Lane however continues to add to her harmonies making it an overall fun song. (5/5)
"Say it With Love" ~ Perhaps a bit cheezy but Melanie's vocals turn this once cheddar filled ditty with power and soul, making it one of the album's highlights! It's a must listen. (5+/5)

Overall this album would average 4 stars but since I am biased and Melanie's death made me even more so, I give it 5. A must buy for La Bouche fans or anyone who fancies Euro Pop/Dance.

5 out of 5 stars Good....But............2007-04-04

I would have to say that I am one of the biggest La Bouche Fans. Owning over 70 CD's Including Melanies Solo stuff. This is the same as the Gold Disc version, but standard silver disc and no slip case. and I Love every track, but what BMG/RCA needs to do is release a cd with pics inside, a La Bouche greatest hits, that has maybe a few more unreleased tracks, and I Love To Love on it. pluse the radio or special versions of tracks, The radio edits/versions are on the singles or promos. this one has the same track list as the Best of feat. Melanie Thornton but without Mel's Solo tracks. the tracks are all the album versions, other than Bolingo, bolingo is the radio version, wich is a bit different than the album version. overall this is a good collection of La Bouche's hits. definatly worth the price. they were and still are one of the best groups in the world. Melanie is truly missed, but she lives on through her music, that is one hell of a voice. La Bouche Forever.

5 out of 5 stars Holds Its Own After Three Decades.......2005-05-08

Virgin’s David Munrow Edition was issued to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the unfortunate passing of this amazing man who influenced the British early music scene at the beginning of the seventies like no other – as musicologist, music journalist, musical instrument collector and, of course, as performer. “The Art of the Netherlands” was originally a 3-LP collection, one of the last that Munrow made, having been recorded in London’s Abbey Road studios in February and April 1975. As might be expected from such a collection, it offers an overview of the creative efforts of the Dutch-Flemish school of composition between approx. 1450 and 1550. The first of the two CDs is devoted entirely to secular songs by Josquin Desprez, Heinrich Isaac, Hayne van Ghizeghem (with arrangements by Alexander Agricola), Antoine Brumel, Johannes Ghiselin, Jacob Obrecht, Johannes Ockeghem and Antoine Busnois – most of these names will be familiar to those who love the choral music of this age, but of the songs here presented, only a few are commonly performed. Munrow’s performance practice, using countertenors and a whole array of mediaeval and renaissance instruments as accompaniment, could raise an eyebrow today, a more puristic approach being generally preferred, but the result is definitely worth hearing, with some excellent singing by James Bowman and a team of up to fourteen singers. The sound quality is excellent, although the stereo panorama does not appear to be as broad as on some other Munrow discs.

The second of the two CDs is divided between a composite mass that Munrow has put together from movements by Johannes Tinctoris, Brumel, Josquin, Pierre de la Rue and Isaac, and a series of sacred and Marian motets by Obrecht, Compère, Josquin, Jean Mouton, Ockeghem, Obrecht and La Rue (with alternative ascriptions in some cases and complemented by the usual anonymi). This second disc is strictly vocal without instrumental accompaniment, something that is not only historically accurate but also makes for absolute clarity in listening. Munrow’s choir is made up of men only except on one single track where he uses two sopranos; the voices are superb and enable one to revel in this delightful music. The way bass Terry Edwards maintains the deep tessitura in some of the motets is, I find, particularly impressive. Of course, there are plenty of recordings around today (in the meantime 30 years have passed) with this kind of music sung by mixed choirs (Tallis Scholars, the Sixteen) in impeccable performances, but Munrow and his all-male team are still able to hold their own after all these years.

        5 out of 5 stars A sampling of a great dramatic tenor.......2006-07-06

Jon Vickers was indomitable, a tenor cut from larger-than-life materials with a huge, unique voice and rock-solid character. That could make him both demanding and difficult, but EMI caught him in a fantastic period when he matched forces with Karajan. The two drew the best from each other, and for once Vickers totally gave himself over to a great condcutor's guidance. As a result we have overwhelming accounts of Tristan and Otello, his two greatest roles. This double CD offers a generous sampling, but I can't imagine that listeners who don't know these recordings won't rush to buy the complete operas.

The Carmen sample is from an exciting recording with Grace Bumbry under Fruhbeck de Burgos. Here and in Samson and Delilah, Vickers' monumental approach sometimes crushes the delicacy of the music, but his fervent emotions more than carry the day (don't expect perfect French). The only work I am not enthusiastic about is the Winterreise. Vickers was committed to performing it, and the drak emotional range of Schubert's cycle suits his temperament, but his singing is too big-boned and operatic. Give it credit for good intentions. As for the rest, all of it is indispensable.
