5 Stars, but don't get me started about recording quality..........2004-03-24

I may be a bit biased, but I can't rate a CD by Frederick Swann with less than 5 stars but I have to say that the recording quality is a bit of dissapointment (one wouldn't expect this of the prestigious Gothic label, but then again it isn't recorded by Gothic but by a local studio).

Anyhow, this CD is good, clean organfun. Interesting pieces, of wich I liked Sowerby's passcagalia the most, intricate and complex music that would suit the better American organist the most. Of course, Fred does an excellent job (what else would you expect from someone who has given more than a 1000 f.*.* concerts!)in playing and registrationtechnique alike. The organ is also marvellous but isn't as large as the organ featured in the 2nd Hawaii volume, yet it has more dignity. And I have to say.... this Hawaian baby has some tongues!

A Pleasing Experience.......2000-03-02

This disc is one of two issued by the GOTHIC label presenting yet another fine organ in the beautiful isles of Hawaii. The performer shines in several pieces. The Bach Toccata & Fugue in D minor(BWV565)was played cleanly & with conviction, showing off the instrument from the opening piece. Several other works, not regularly heard, were a pleasing sound to the ears like 'Woodland Flute Call', 'LeAloha, Lei Makamae' & 'Scherzo Cats' all played with fuidity and grace, showing again, the wonderful colors of this instrument in soft, subtle beauty. Nyle Hallman, accompanying harpist, just adds to the wonderful menu of this disc joining Dr. Swann in several nice duets such as 'March Solonnelle in E Flat Major, and the theme of the Hawaii's Queen is beautiful in it's harmonics with harp. If earth shattering, wall quaking sound is to your liking, Swann gives full reign to his inhibitions in a great playing of 'Fanfare on Agincourt Song' & 'Heraldings' and a few others which he seems very at home playing and sound wonderful in this room. Other gems are some standby's heard on other disc's and are worthy of mention. 'Meditation on Brother James's Air', two hymn improvisations by the artist himself, 'Amazing Grace' and 'St. Anne' (Oh God Our Help In Ages Past), 'Blessed Assurance' and let's not forget Mendelssohn & his 'Preludes & Fugues (3) for Organ' all played masterfully on a pristine organ.

One wonder's why Dr. Swann doesn't record more of this not-so-heard of repitoire, it's wonderful to hear these & to then have them on CD. I'd recommend it to anyone!

A masterpiece of Brazilian music.......1999-02-07

There is a live unplugged record from one of the greatest Brazilian bands. Full of beatiful ballads, it's one of the best album I've ever heard. Listen to "O exercito de um homem so" (something like "The One Man's Army") - and understand the words, if you can! The Engenheiros do Hawaii have have influences on Pink Floyd, English progressive rock and Brazilian music.

The first and the best Unpplugged Album of Brazil.......1999-02-04

The Unpplugged CD of this Brazilian rock band is outstanding!!! It loses quality only in that the crowd is too much near the microphones... But it does not dissapoint in the quality of the lyrics!!! The guitar player (Augusto Licks) is the best!!!
