a must for the Disco/House lovers. Brings back memories of U.S. Studio/The Warehouse: 206 South Jefferson, Chicago!!!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-06-25

These songs bring back so many memories. They are all original versions and full length. There were songs that I knew but didn't know the title. I am so happy to own it.

2 out of 5 stars A few good songs.......2006-05-16

There are simply too many mediocre songs in this collection. It seems to be an error in judgement on the compiler's part. They're not underground classics, either - just vaguely experimental disco songs. They often seem pedestrian, with poor structure. There's also a lot of early synth pop in here - rather mechanical German-sounding disco. When you come across a good song, like BBQ's 'On the Beat', you realise how disposable much of the rest of the material is.

The quality of the transfers is very high, there's no doubt about it. And to a certain extent it is a fun collection. But there's probably too much forgettable material here. Would it really be any great loss if we didn't have Macho's 'I'm a Man'? I haven't heard the first volume, and there seems to be more classics on that ('Get Down Saturday Night', 'Superfreak' and so on). Part of the problem may be its European origins - they often prefer inorganic sounding dance music, more urban-industrial stuff.

There's one more problem - I think. I might be wrong about this, but when the CD was mastered, the volume seems pitched a bit low. I noticed this one other time with a CD from the Netherlands - it's a bit irritating to have to turn it up. If you listen to Soul Jazz's CDs you realise how good a CD can be. Overall I'm tempted to say skip this. There are better disco and Old School collections out there - I'm looking forward to hearing Soul Jazz's "A Tom Moulton Mix."

5 out of 5 stars At last.......2006-03-15

I can hardly believe that, at last, I can have this awesome 12" compilation; these are song I grew with and, most of them I could not bought them in vinyl back in the 80's. You must buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Grand indeed,superb sound quality........2006-03-08

An amazing collection of tracks with blistering sound quality.My 1500 watts 8 speakers with dual 15" sub-woofers stereo multi-channel system is just kicking..my brick walls are not happy with the vibration but iam not easing the pressure.

5 out of 5 stars Erotic Lounge Definitely Delivers the Lounge ... Other Part of Title Up to You :-).......2006-02-01

"Lounge" is a term often over-used in compilations these days. Some people wil slap that label on anything with a beat (that's not hard trance) or anything remotely soft (New Age/meditative or World music is NOT necessarily 'lounge' or 'chill.')

But in the case of this collection - they actually have labeled and named it correctly!

As for the "Erotic" portion, these CD's will definitely help with the right person(s) in the room ... just like listening to Barry White by yourself - in a blizzard - inside a Greyhound bus station in Fairbank, Alaska may not help you much, these CD's deliver on the promise of great 'lounge' music - the rest is up to you :-)

There are four in the series so far. They are all excellent with only a few tracks not up to par on each set so you can't really go wrong but there are differences.

EROTIC LOUNGE: The first is the softest of them all with lots of minimalist lounge. A perfect CD to end your evening or the first CD in the morning.

EROTIC LOUNGE - DELUXE EDITION: It's exactly what a 'lounge' CD should be - full of chill beats backed by light jazz beats or bossa nova-like beats. If anyone wants to know what 'lounge' should sound like - this CD pretty much encapsulates what it should be.

EROTIC LOUNGE - SENSUAL PASSION: Along with great 'lounge' tracks, they pick up a beat a bit with tracks that go into trance chill or trip hop - again, all tasteful, fun and aptly cool. On the slightly exotica tracks, they veer from bossa nova to light samba.

EROTIC LOUNGE - BARE JEWELS: This is the least lounge of the collection with most tracks really more trip hop, light trance or melodic acid jazz - nothing wrong with - still a great collection of tracks - just so you know exactly what you're getting.

So whatever the mood you want to set - from 'lounge' where you can easily converse over the instrumental tracks to tracks that will get you in the mood for a fun samba or tracks to lead to you to the bedroom - they're all here. Pick and choose or get them all - you can't go wrong with this series, so far, they're all great.

And hey, the CD cover alone is worth a star :-)

5 out of 5 stars Great CD to listen to in the bedroom.......2005-12-18

I purchased this CD while on vacation in Europe and was blown away. It made every hotel my wife and I stayed in very enjoyable. It is a great CD to listen to from foreplay to finish. It is also a great CD just to throw on and enjoy while inebriated. It also has some great pictures on the inside booklet. I will be purhasing the other CD's in "the art of loungin'" set as well.

This is the boregard ablum of the year. Giorgio is the craziest. 50 cent and Ja nada don't got stuff on old GA. This ablums got everything, YMCA, Alice Cooper, and Eminem. Truly a finely suited album. Buy it because Versace's album is not that good.

5 out of 5 stars Hotel Costes Better Watch Out.......2004-04-18

I have only listened to this CD once and I was compelled to write this review. I hope this review is seen by a lot of people. THIS IS A SINGULARLY OUTSTANDING COMPILATION. It's unclassifiable. If you collect the Hotel Costes series, I seriously think you should get this CD. You will not be disappointed. Each track is beautiful and elegant, just like the fashion house and cafe it was created for. BRAVO!!

Nearly Three Years Later Comes the Second Volume of the Series of Motown Rarities. While the Premise of the Original Has Remained Intact - all 42 Songs Are Previously Unreleased, the Horizons have Been Broadened Just a Bit. So You Will Find a Couple of Familiar Songs in a Totally Different Format, a Few Tracks from the Label's Early Years and a Surprising Revisit to an Early 60's Instrumental by a 70's Female Vocalist. What Remains Constant Though is the Quality of These Long-lost Grooves. These Are Not Fillers, Nor Are They Throwaway Songs; Why They were Never Released is a Mystery that Will Probably Always Remain So.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pull Some Treasures From The Cellar.......2007-06-05

If you are expecting hits on the same level as The Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go?" stop reading right now, because IMHO, none of these songs are classics.

However, many are so great, you'll be playing them over and over and over again.

In listening to these songs, one can see the legendary Motown Quality control people all seated round the table considering which songs to make hits... or not. These tunes were mostly the "or nots" and listening to this album, one can mostly see why.

Some of these songs are strong songs sung by weak singers.

The Monitor's "Words" comes to mind. The writing in the song and the Motown band are great, but the vocals are a confusing, weak, jumble. A stronger group singing would have passed muster. It's no wonder The Monitors didn't last long with singing like this.

Some songs are cookie cutter Motown: You've heard the same guitar licks, drum beats, and the same lyrics in better Motown songs, and these don't distinguish themselves.

Diana Ross (It says "& The Supremes", but MISS Ross is singin' by herself on this one) struggles to keep up with "Honey Bee (Keep On Stinging Me)," and in too high of a key to boot. You've heard this type of song from her already.

And then, some are just plain stupid.

I cringe every time I hear The Temptations' screechy, cloying "Positively Absolutely Right" and dash to hit the skip button. Ditto for Patrice Holloway's "Those DJ Shows" since The Supremes version is out and out better.

But lest you think I hate everything on this album, there are songs on here that are so enchanting, so groovy, such splendour, that you're going to have these CDs in your player for weeks on end, constantly playing (though you'll dash to skip "Positively Absolutely Right" because it is THAT irritating!)

Songs that are living in my head include:

Tammi Terrell's "My Heart" which is superbly written, features Terrell's unique phrasing and dramatic distinctness of voice, and the unique sound of a mandolin.

The Marveletttes "I Hope You Had Better Luck Than I Did" which is funky and vaguely sarcastic at same time.

Martha & The Vandellas "Lone, Lonely Town" which charges out of the gate with Martha's vocals and the band going full power with a big band sound, as if this were the opening number of a Broadway show.

The Lewis Sisters' "Breakaway" which I disliked on first listen, but grew to love due to the opening hooks and the chorus of "Doo Doo D'DOO, Doo Doo D'DOOOOOO." This one probably didn't get released because you can barely make out the title in the song, they sing it so fast. And "The Singing Schoolteachers'" voices are so wispy you often can't make out what they're saying. But it is still a neat song.

Blinky's cover of the Fontella Bass classic "Rescue Me." What a wowwer! The opening verses with the deep bass and the voices grab you and keep you to about halfway through the song when it all loses steam.

The Contours "Take Him Back If It Makes You Happy" is my single most favourite song in the entire set. It is probably the one song that should have been released because it exemplifies the brilliance of Motown music. This song has groove, and makes you want to sing along and dance at the same time. This one will teach you why you don't clap along to songs and drive a car at the same time...

Be sure to listen to:

J.J Barnes "Every Time I See You, I Go Wild!";
Little Lisa's "Choo Choo Train" which is a sweet confection that sticks on you;
The eternally underrated Elgins "My Two Arms - You = Tears" is smart and features distinct vocals;
Hattie Littles bouncy, bluesy "Love Trouble Heartache & Misery" doesn't sound like a Motown song, but is good nonetheless;
Chris Clark's "Sweet Loving" which makes one wonder why so much of her stuff got shelved;
The Supremes (Post Diana Ross) "You've Got To Pay The Price"
bandmaster Earl Van Dyke's mostly instrumental rocker "All Day All Night."

The two disk set also comes with extensive liner notes explaining why some of the songs didn't get released, or interesting notes about some of the artists. If any of the album producers are out there... WE WANT MORE PICTURES!!! And how fast can you come up with Volume 3?

5 out of 5 stars A fine collection IF..........2006-10-21

...IF you are a really hardcore Motown fan. The tracks are all fine and interesting. But they weren't as pleasing musically and lyrically to my ears as the first volume. And they have nowhere near the appeal of many of the Motown "hits". If you're a completist, this collection is a priceless find. But if you just enjoy grooving on Motown tunes, this may not be the best collection for you.

4 out of 5 stars GET BACK IN THAT CELLAR!.......2006-09-01

I LIKE THIS CD VERY MUCH. I'VE SEEN ANTHOLOGIES ON MANY OF THESE ARTISTS BUT WHAT ABOUT A CD WITH THE RECORDINGS OF CAROLYN CRAWFORD? SHE WAS AND STILL IS A MUCH BETTER SINGER THAN MANY OF THE FEMALE "STARS" AT MOTOWN AND SHE WAS JUST A TEENAGER WHEN SHE WAS WITH THE COMPANY. HER FIRST RELEASE WAS A SONG CALLED "FORGET ABOUT ME" AND IN THE OPINION OF SOME PEOPLE IT'S A MOTOWN CLASSIC. PEOPLE REALLY OUGHT TO HEAR SOME OF THE MUSIC SHE RECORDED AND IT'S ALL VERY GOOD BECAUSE MUCH OF IT WAS "PRODUCED BY SMOKEY". NEED I SAY MORE?

4 out of 5 stars Must be a big cellar.......2006-04-01

When A Cellarful Of Motown appeared in 2002 the general consensus was that it was astonishing that so many tracks of such amazing quality could have remained languishing unheard in an archive, lost and undocumented for so many years. Even the compilers registered their surprise and doubted there would be enough fresh discoveries to warrant a sequel of previously unreleased material.

Motown was on a phenomenal roll throughout the sixties, with the Hitsville studio in Detroit augmented by a second studio in the Davison area, and further recording and talent spotting operations setting up in New York, Chicago and especially in Los Angeles, where the company eventually relocated. Hitsville seemed to operate around the clock, like a factory, with songs being tried out with various groups and singers in a highly competitive and creative ferment, and an extremely discard rate.

A few tracks into Volume 2, three years later, having heard new classic cuts by Earl Van Dyke, Eddie Holland and Gladys Knight, any fears that quality control may have been lowered to fill another double-CD collection were blown away. How could any of these have been deemed unworthy of release at the time?

Sometimes a recording remained in the can because the song was released by another artist (often using the same backing track), but often both song and recording were consigned to oblivion.
Here, for example is The Boy From Crosstown in its original 1965 version by the Marvelettes, featuring Gladys Horton. A re-recording appeared the following year on an obscure compilation called Year By Year, and the song turned up on Gladys Knight and the Pips' 1968 album Feelin' Bluesy, but was never the single it deserved to be despite two other attempts featuring the Velvelettes, also unreleased at the time. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' Hoping The Pause Is Helping The Cause could only have improved the Special Occasion album had it been included, and there are six other masterful Smokey songs, five of which have not been heard before, one co-written with his wife Claudette, her only known Jobete composer credit.

Chris Clark recently benefitted from a 2CD Anthology with a whole second disc of previously unheard recordings, yet another choice gem not included there, Sweet Lovin', surfaces on this collection. The same could be said of After The Rain by Kim Weston, and the closer Crying Time by Brenda Holloway.

There are new finds by artists legendary for not getting released as they deserved at the time - Carolyn Crawford, Patrice Holloway, Hattie Littles and Debbie Dean are just a few who appear once each here and just whet the appetite for more.

Some go beyond obscure - the Beatle-influenced Dalton Boys song is a B-side that was replaced by a different track at the last moment, and so was unreleased, but here is an alternative version to that. There are too many highlights to cite individually, but it was intriguing to hear a Monitors recording (Words) with a female lead, presumably Sandra Fagin. There are some towering vocals from Martha Reeves and the Vandellas from 1967 and 1969, and a fresh version by Blinky of Rescue Me produced by Raynard Miner, who co-wrote and produced the Fontella Bass smash original, in stereo, as are seven others including a great Marvelettes track that was almost the follow-up to The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game.

I now have every confidence that Volume 3 will contain further revelations.

5 out of 5 stars Another great collection of unreleased Motown gems........2005-12-30

Cellarful of Motown vol.1 and now this Vol.2 contain many stellar performances that were panned by Motown for various reasons thus never released. Cellarful Vol.2 is a European pressing only which may be hard to find in American record shops. Some of this stuff is corny while other stuff is noteworthy. The remastering is 24 bit and there are many selections that are stereo. Some people only like HIT records which renders this collection useless to them. Those folks who like strange Motown tunes and performances will be mostly pleased with the contents of Cellarful of Motown, both volumes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An esoteric collection of American Funk.......2002-08-20

For some reason it seems to be left to Europeans (and Brits in particular) to collect together "lost" soul and funk nuggets from the USA, and provide a coherent set of sleeve notes to place the said items within a context. This excellent collection as well as containing some of Warners biggest hits ("Clean Up Woman"/Betty Wright, "Rock Steady"/Aretha Franklin,"Right Place,Wrong Time"/Dr John) contains some neglected gems that ought to be heard.In particular "Stanga" by Little Sister is a belter, little sister being Rose Stewart part of Sly's extended band/family. There are two Family Stone covers, a magnificent version of "Everyday People" by Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band,and a version of "Sing a simple song" by The Noble Knights-led by King Curtis, but with all the Atlantic House band luminaries in attendance as well. Then there's a remake of a Watts Band backing track dubbed by Society's bag, 1 minute 25 seconds of a track called "Stroke 75" by Tower of Power and a stunning track called "Kissing my Love" by Cold Blood. There's no room to mention the Bobby Byrd track, or the one by Allan Toussaint, but I ought to give a big shout for "Somebody in the World for you" by The Mighty Hannibal which somehow managed not to get much airplay first time around. Sure, a lot of this stuff is obscure, but it's GOOD obscure, not just padding to the hits contained herein, and it rattles along in a joyful urgent way. Looking for something from left field that makes you feel good? Get those flares out!This could be worth investing in.

3 out of 5 stars If you don't have any Brazilectros.......2003-05-11

...And want to check out a few solid tracks from this "New bossa" genre, by all means check this out. While the first Rio Lounge didn't get me because of the general mix/sound quality and redundant track selection - this one is a cut above thanks to the alternative track selections that may not be on other compilations. This does not have any "original" tracks on it, like Brazilectro or Break & Bossa which usually have great ones, but it does have some of the other songs from the artists that may not make it onto the main compilations.

You may recognize the artists - but unless you have their feature releases you may be hard pressed to find some of the tracks included here. And even then, there are tidbits that got me intrigued, like the Wei Chi track and the MAW cut which features Liliana Chachian of Da Lata fame.

But unless you're in a "hey, I collect all of these" sort of mood, I'd say pass on the Rio Lounge series and stick to Brazilectro or even Bossa Brava. They have quality artists on their label and the comps themselves are usually cheaper than this.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Fresh like sushi!.......2004-01-14

        This is one of the best cd purchases I've made in years. While my familiarity with "J-Pop" (or Japanese Pop Music)is based mostly on theme songs I've heard in anime and a couple of cd's by bands like Cibo Matto and Shonen Knife who received support on alternative radio stations in the 90's, I wasn't prepared for the fantastic and eclectic mix of music on JAPAN FOR SALE, VOL. 2. The music samples provided by Amazon were enough to hook me into getting this, but they're only a tease of what you'll get if you pick this up. For someone who is both jaded by and frustrated with US "top 40" radio, this cd is a tasty fresh treat! You won't find any Britneys or Christinas in this mix, nor will you find any Creeds or Matchbox 20s. Instead, you're getting music that is completely original, gorgeous, and at times totally mystifying! While a few Western influences have possibly found their way into the songs on this cd, I hesitate to even compare any of these tracks to anything a mainstream American radio fan might be familiar with, as these comparisons would be superficial, unfair, and take away from the uniqueness on JAPAN FOR SALE, VOL. 2.

        My favorite track on this cd by far is DT's "Yume No Nakae (Malted Milk Mix)" - prepare yourself to visit a completely new world when you hear this! A fusion of emotional electronica and a gripping vocal track, this song took my breath away the first time I played it and I've been listening to it relentlessly ever since. Truly special music indeed! "Skirt" by CHARA is also a radical and exciting take on what a rock song can be, and I'm surprised each time I hear it at the confidence conveyed by such a soft, almost childish voice. It's brazen and sweet at the same time. These songs leave you wanting to hear more by the artists who created them!

        "Balance" by YOSHINORI SUNAHARA might be what another reviewer referred to as "background music," as this is a very synthesized song with limited, seemingly computerized "vocals." But this is actually an intelligently assembled "chillout" tune that benefits from its sparse and sometimes repetetive beats. MAYU KITAKI, SUPERCAR, and TAKKYU ISHINO contribute wonderful dance tunes, each one unique, that will have you wanting to move your feet and leave you just feeling good all over. Or you can get rockheavy with L'ARC-EN-CIEL, BOOM BOOM SATELLITES, and PUFFY. Even the songs I found less thrilling - specifically AYO's "Shinsei Romanticist" and DJ KRUSH's "Candle Chant" - found ways of tricking me into liking them. Not knowing Japanese or much of what the artists are singing doesn't really affect the enjoyment of the music - in fact, it really lets you feel like you're in a brand new space of your own, discovering something no one even knows about. This cd has has me excited about finding other "J-Pop" music. Definitely a worthwhile purchase!

        3 out of 5 stars Disappointed J-Pop fan.......2003-11-24

        If you ask any of my friends, I am a complete J-pop fan. So, because of this I bought JAPAN FOR SALE. It was a complete disappointment. Some of the songs are just background music and a lot of the ones in Japanese just repeat a few words. For example, Yunegiwa Last Boy by Supercar. If you are really interested in J-pop try listening to V6 or if you are into J-Rock try Gackt, you won't be disappointed!!!

        4 out of 5 stars j-pop fan.......2002-06-05

        I was suprised considering I went out on a limb to pick this up. It seemed risky as all sophomore albums are, even as compilaions go. Though the tracks may not seem to blend well at first on the first listen through the tracks that bring back interest hold their ground well. It does have some very "eruo-influenced" sound in it but you'll get over it. If your into j-pop you'll probably recognize the track "skirt" it's definetely got something to it very much a mix of a lot of different things but all good I assure you.

        4 out of 5 stars music cut from a different cloth.......2002-05-19

        pop in America has recently gone down to the level of pig-fodder, taking talentless females vocals over other people's one-dimensional music. there's no variety. however, overseas in Friendly Japan, the pop scene (refered to as J-Pop) is much different. pop is such a broad term in Japan, much broader than that of the US, it could mean any number of stylings. rock, synth-pop, rap, techno, and downbeat elements are found in the fusion-stylings of J-Pop. This CD is a good view at the currnet J-Pop scene. There's synth-pop sensibilities on "Nakanaide"; electronica on "Iceblink", "Yume No Nakae", and "Yumegiwa Last Boy"; chillout rhythms on "Balance"; fresh rock on "Skirt" and "Atarashii Hibi"; and tracks that fuse multiple genres on "Soliloquy", "New Wave Jacket", and "Shinsei Romanticist". So, in short, there's lots of stuff on thia album. Almost every track has an electronic element to it and may reflect the technology-pervaded Japan. a nice cd, the only really bad track was "Spirit Dreams Inside". check it out if you're looking for new music you've never heard from artists you've never heard of.

        4 out of 5 stars Not quite up to the same level as the first one..........2002-04-06

        ...but still pretty fun all the way through. What has been replaced does hurt the album's full score in the end, though. Unlike the volume 1's opening, which packed the eerie punch of the Boom Boom satellites' "Fogbound", this one starts with a much lighter, much happier "Nakanaide" by Mayu Kitaki, which is still charming and nice in it's own right. The next couple of songs are more like moving techno and DJ pieces, which are done well don't get me wrong, but they don't quite appeal to the nature of J-pop that I was expecting from this album. Then comes DJ Krush, doing "Candle Chant: A Tribue", which is a very boring, uninspired piece of work that has a nice backtrack but could have been so much more, instead of a rather simple, unchanging rap song. His work on Volume 1 is much better. Almost the same for "Balance", by Yoshinori Sunahara, which is another quite slow but moving techno song with some very interesting vocals and with everything together, the song has almost a meditative quality that the vocals suggest. Boom Boom Satellite's "SOLILOQUY" reminds me a lot of Fogbound from volume 1, except that it is much more rock oriented (but it still keeps that creepy feeling of the fist song). The second half of the cd adds more rock to the mix, with L'Arc-en-ciel's pure pop/rock that brings back memories of the first volume, Puffy Amiyumi's piece of work is another pop piece that sounds almost like the Beach Boys and is capable of cheering anyone up, and finally Chara's brilliant song "Skirt" that is almost a different kind of rock itself, very fun stuff indeed. Other noteworthy songs include the songs by Supercar and Polysics (who are pure genious, with catchy hummable lyrics and an insane, almost cartoon quality machine like sound effects, each time I hear them they get better). The album ends on quite a bad note with Aco, with annoying, whiney vocals. Overrall, the album isn't quite as good as the first one (which was mixed to begin with), but it is still fun while it lasts. Give it a try.
