Delicious!.......2002-02-12
I love this CD. Laurel Masse has a remarkable voice which she uses with great expertise on this collection of beautifully performed and arranged songs. Listening to this collection is a very special experience you won't want to miss.
Yes -- they still make great albums.......2002-01-19
I collect a great deal of music, and this album is superb. Mixing genuine spiritual intensity with unmatched musicality, this musical experience is beyond compare. There is not a weak moment, and it includes possibly the best recording of "Motherless Child" I've heard. A must have.

A Dignified and Welcome Contribution to Spiritual Music!.......2001-10-22
Those of us who adore spiritual albums are very lucky that one of the founding members of the Manhattan Transfer has decided to turn her talents to a cause that interests us so!
In this album, Laurel Masse baptizes an old music hall with her GORGEOUS voice and spiritual impromptu songs that spill right from her beating heart.
Some of my favorite pieces on the album were "Radiant Flame of Gold", a very powerful safety/comfort chant embracing either "Saint Brigit" or "the Goddess, Brigit" depending on your religion. I also enjoyed "The Mountainy Singer" which is just a lively, spirited, catchy tune. And her improvisational pieces are absolutely divine.
I'm very into voices, and this is a STRONGLY voice-centered album, so let me try to describe her voice in case it's helpful to anyone. Her singing style is NOT opera on most pieces. It's a Streisand-like voice, very clear and powerful with only light vibrato. It'll draw you in on the very first song and make you wish you could sing like that!
I'm glad she made this album and I would recommend it to others who like very dignified spiritual music.
An amazing piece of work!.......2001-06-18
This CD is truly amazing. What a gift! Laurel Masse's willingness to expand her musical horizons has brought forth an astoundingly varied and beautiful piece of work. From the opening notes of the Quaker hymn "How Can I Keep From Singing?" to the closing track, "Lone Wild Bird/MacIntosh's Lament," this ia multi-layered, richly hued CD filled with intensity and heart. The range of selections alone defies classification, and the beauty with which she infuses these songs is thrilling. This is not "background music"--like all true art, "Feather and Bone" challenges your senses...and, eventually, opens your heart and mind. Thank you, Laurel, for following your own sacred heart as an artist, and taking your audience along on the journey.

Album Description
Chaskinakuy "A Flor de Tierra"
This is music with an "altitude"! Duo Chaskinakuy's long-awaited new recording features 17 stunning instrumental and vocal pieces from high mountain regions in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. Musicians Edmond Badoux, Francy Vidal, and guest artist Daniel Zamalloa chart new territory for Andean music lovers on known, and not-so-known regional instruments. Pipes of feather, flutes of bone, harp, violin, vocals and more, evoke the sounds and images of high plateaus and rural celebrations. CD includes 12-page booklet with notes, song lyrics and instrument photos.

Highly recommend.......2004-10-21
My wife and I had the pleasure of seeing Chaskinakuy when they came through our town recently, and it was during the intermission in which we bought their A Flor De Tierra CD. Like the concert, one gets from the CD an education into the different styles of music of the region, the numerous instruments used, the culture of the people and their history. Sometimes when a group focuses in on one aspect, in this case an academic appreciation of Andean music, another aspect may be sacrificed, such as the soul of the music. That couldn't be further from the case with Chaskinakuy. (Why hasn't Microsoft come up with a Quechuan spellchecker yet!!) The music is so rich with feeling and emotion that I literally got goose bumps from hearing them play live, and those bumps haven't receded an iota after continuous playings of A Flor De Tierra. There are 17 numbers on the CD with a total playing time of roughly 52 minutes. I have so many favorite songs on it that it would be fruitless to try to break them all down in this humble attempt at an Amazonian review. All I can say is: buy the CD and I'm sure you'll be magically transported on a serene musical note like I was to the mountains of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador.
Excellent, excellent Andean Music!.......2003-09-02
This CD is by far their best yet! If you have any doubts about good Andean Music, DOUBT NO MORE!! This is worth the buy!
Danielle adds SO MUCH to the group on his Andean violin.
I've seen Chaskinakuy in concert, have talked with them, and have been to one of their workshops. Not only are they accomplished profession Musicians who are dedicated to preserving and educating the Andean culture, but their ATTITUDE is so good: They are all excellent teachers, are gracious, generous, patient, and just very giving people. This is a fine quality to have; one of the finest for professionals.
This CD is exquisitely beautiful. I highly recommend it!!!
Most authentic music outside of the Andes.......2003-05-17
I love this album. It is one of the most authentic performances of Andeam music anywhere. Chaskinakuy plays South American music with a wide number of original Andean instruments. I've seen them in concert! They are talented musicians whose music is heartfelt and true to the original rhythms of villages in the mountains of Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. You'll love this album for its beautiful music that will take you to a different world. Highly recommended.

Chansons d'Esprit.......2006-05-04
This is about as far away from the Manhattan Transfer as you can get. The album is essentially Laurel Masse's haunting voice, either totally alone or complemented by such sparse instrumentation as a crystal bowl or fiddle, intoning ancient, medieval, baroque or folk tunes. If you listen to it through headphones (recommended) you can get a sense of her swaying as she sings. Ironically, I think my favourite track is "Radiant Flame of Gold" where she doesn't sing but recites "prayers, blessings and curses" from the Carmina Gadelica over an hypnotic rhythm of frame drums.
WOW!.......2006-03-14
This has to be the most beautiful singing I have ever heard. A perfect voice! I am more suprised that she hasn't had more music out there!
This music is similar to chant music. You find a comfortable, peaceful place and turn it on.... and go where it takes you.
This ex-manhattan transfer sure has had her troubles. But it is nice to see her back in the saddle and putting others to shame. I only hope to hear more of her wonderful voice.
masse never forgotten.......2000-09-20
having only been around seven when laurel was with the manhattan transfer iremember her presence really well on the two ronnies and that impression as lasted the whole time until the present day. laurel is sure one of the most talented voices around.this album complements her well. laurel can achieve the best of any song and bring the listener to a standstill . keep up the good work. any other fans with any video clips of laurel solo or in the manhattan transfer email pufnsuf@ntlworld.com would love to hear from you. well done laurel keep up the spirit you have never been forgotten
Magnificent Singer.......2000-07-03
Laurel Masse is truly one of the finest singers I've ever heard. I have to admit that I am graced with her presence on my own recording and I do play on one cut of Feather and Bone, but that's because I'm such a big fan of hers. All of the pieces on Feather and Bone are stylistically very different and she proves her artistry on each cut. Jazz lovers look for her new album, Heart and Soul, classic ballads, out later this year -- I got a preview, it's gorgeous.
