It's okay - I was spoiled by Spiritual, Fiesta Fatal, Sensual etcetera. While I can use the music in my massage practice, it doesn't inspire me the way Spiritual did. Maybe it will grow on me with more plays.

5 out of 5 stars Zen & Fire.......2007-05-09

Another Great CD from B-Tribe. In ways I hear Enigma and other artist, but when the last song is played you still know that B-Tribe is playing and that your either dancing to the beat or relaxing to it. I just can't get enought of them. The song "She moves through the fair" is just an example of what they can do to your soul and body. I just need to buy one more of their cd's and then look forward to buying more.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone!!!.......2007-04-09

This is my first review I have written on Amazon and I chose to make this album the one because it is far and away the best album I have in my collection now. I have all of Enigma's works, most of Delerium's, all of Enya's, all of B-tribe's, and others like Era, Pangea, Erotic Moods, Bella Sonus,Amethystium, and others I can't think of right off hand. This album instantly went to number one rotation on the old CD changer. Plus I had to make a copy for each car and put it on my MP3 player I love it so much. I am so tired of all these groups that come along trying to be like early Enigma and using techno beats over chanting that sounds so much like something someone just threw together, where the beats don't even sound like they fit the chant (most of Era's songs for instance). This album is so much superior to all of their other works, although there are several songs on their other albums that I like, none of the albums are as great from start to finish as this one. This album definately needs to be experienced with quality speakers in a room with the lights off and a comfortable chair the first time. I cannot say enough about this one, although I am worried that by making such a raving review I may make someone's expectations extraordinarally high, but I cannot say enough.

5 out of 5 stars Different Place!.......2007-04-01

As my appetite for music changes in tandum of my age,i find b-tribe more and more intriguing and this CD is no doubt one of their best albums bar none.

The music is a mix of Spanish guitar with haunting voices and new age like beats. This music has put us listeners in a different place, a place where stress, hardship, bills, and bills do not even exist, only their music exists and guides us to that perfect place!

4 out of 5 stars Upbeat and relaxing.......2007-01-15

I've been a huge fan of B-Tribe since the early 90's and I've owned each of their albums, starting with !Fiesta Fatal! This album seems to reflect the maturity and refinement of B-Tribe since it combines the typical, upbeat Spanish influence they are well known for along with the softer elements of jazz and contemporary instrumental music. I truly enjoy every song on this album, however there are two reasons why I'm not giving it a 5 star rating: it's a little too short and the woman's vocals on a couple of the songs can be a little annoying at times. I really wish they would have used Debra Blando again since Luna's voice seems a little out of sync at times. Don't let that discourage you from purchasing this cd since it really is very good and after all this is only my opinion :)

One of my favorite instruments to listen to is the classical guitar. I currently have all of Terry Muska's CDs in my collection. These CDs are relaxing and inspiring and I often listen to them when I am drawing or webdesigning.

Beautiful work, Terry!

Album Description

Flamenco is the emotionally charged and hugely expressive Gypsy soul music of Andalucía, where each hand-clap is a scream from the heart and every heel-smack an act of defiance. Featuring stunning vocals and mesmerizing guitar-picking, this album seduces the listener with innovative and modern developments on a genre that draws on the traditions and deconstructions of ancient Moorish and Iberian music.

4 out of 5 stars Basically 90's Nuevo Flamenco.......2007-02-28

If you want an overview of flamenco I suppose this will do the trick. However, there is alot of crossover music found on this disc that might best be classified as Nuevo Flamenco. This is definitely not pure flamenco if that is what you are seeking. As for the music itself featured here I would have to say it is very good and covers a broad spectrum of flamenco styles. Some of the best songs include, Tomasa La Macanita's "Buleria la Mocita" taken from the "Con El Alma" disc that features lots of accompanyment and encouragement(ole's and hand clapping), Carmen Linares's "Del Molinete" from her "La Luna en El Rio" CD is a guttural wailing song with lots of emotion, the absolutely timeless and classic, "La Voz del Tiempo" that features the late, great, vocalist Camaron de la Isla teaming up with Tomatito from the "Barrio Negro" CD, the pure flamenco guitar of Pepe Habichuela on "A Mi Manuel" from the album "Habichuela en Rama," the gut wrenching vocals of Chano Lobato on "A Quien Contarle" from the disc "La Nuez Mosca," and the meticulous and sorrowful stylings of Duquende on "Serra, Que Te Olividara" from the excellent compilation "Los Jovenes Flamencos" CD. Other notable nuevo flamenco artists featured with good songs include the jazz-pop-flamenco work of Pata Negra on "Bodas De Sangre" and the mellow "Pozo del Deseo" that features Songhai with early fusion artists Ketama. Most of the works featured on this rough guide are ataken from albums from the early to mid nineties and not really even pure flamenco. This is not to say it is bad but be aware that it is essentialy nuevo flamenco that is not so nuevo(new). There are many new proponents of this style of flamenco that are not featured here. If you like flamenco inspired music that fits more into the nuevo flamenco category than you will like this disc. This disc also serves as a springboard for your tastes as you may find some artists you prefer and may choose to seek out their disc. However, if you want flamenco puro(pure flamenco) look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but not great.......2007-01-03

I picked up this CD because I was trying to open my musical horizons to include new things, and I have found success so far with several of the rough guide series. This CD let me down for two reasons. First, some of the songs use synths and have a very "pop" recording aesthetic (they don't breathe musically or sound "live" in the least). The second reason I didnt like this rough guide that much was simply because the songs were not that good. I have several other non traditional flamenco cds and they all excel way more that this CD. I was looking for something a step beyond the popular gypsie kings, and no song on this CD tops them. The melodies are boring and the guitar is very much the same old same old. So in other words, nothing is terrible, but nothing shines. I listened to the whole cd twice and can't remember any single song sticking out to me at all. I bought this CD really excited about hearing it, and it left me very disapointed.

Eric Hansen's Romancero is a great CD. Very relaxing - wonderful for dinner music or at a cocktail party. While this contains mostly arrangements of some of my favorite songs, my favorite track is one written by Eric himself - Viento de verano. This shows his talent to the max! Really looking forward to his next release!

1 out of 5 stars Look this is not flamenco.......2002-12-17

I get irritated seeing all these Ottmar Liebert clones with their so called 'Nouveau Flamenco'. This has absolutely nothing to do with Flamenco!!

Flamenco is a lot more than elevator music played by people trying to look spanish. What is new about that? and what is even remotely flamenco about it??

There is a wave of real new flamenco from spain,....

Its like my teacher from madrid said "This stuff a five year old from Andalucia can play with his feet"

And give me a break 'careless whisper' lol

Guitarist Eric Hansen debuted onto the new Spanish guitar music scene with his album "Without Words" and has now followed it up with his newest release, "Romancero."
The flavor of the album is definitely mixed. Hansen has taken some old-school, popular hits and remade them into his own. Notable tracks include "Killing Me Softly With His Song," "And I Love Her," and "Sailing." A mix of 70s, 80s and 90s Top-40 songs reworked into smooth, flawless tracks make this album worthwhile.
Hansen shines with the Beatles and Sting tracks. We see his talent very clearly on "And I Love Her," quite possibly the best track on the album. He also crafts "Killing" with care, almost making it his own.
Hansen sometimes slides his guitar into the "grocery store background music" with the older, more generic tunes such as "Careless Whisper" and "Breaking Free." The album would have been better without them.
In all, if you like rich Spanish guitar music with a more modern feel, try "Romancero" on for size. You will appreciate it.
Just don't listen to it as you go shopping.

5 out of 5 stars If this is the first, imagine what will follow!.......1999-06-26

I have listened to this CD repeatedly and hear a desire by both players to be creative and fresh. In the future I sense they will aquire greater writing skills as well as an even higher level of rhythmic and solo ability. I live in the area they are from and listen to them from time to time. Since the release of this CD I've already heard a vast gain in the musicality and lyricism in the solos and the writing in the new tunes for the upcoming CD. Hansen and Paucar are people who strive to attain the highest level of musicality within the scope of thier ablilties, and they are still learning and growing as musicians! Imagine what will follow on the next CD!

Juan Jose Carranza's second CD, Playa Gitana shows a guitarist in his prime. The CD starts of with the title track Playa Gitana which takes you to a beach in Costa Rica. Track 3, Caballo Brillante is a brilliant composition full of passion. Mi Nino is a traditional buleria which proves that Carranza can play a guitar like a master.

5 out of 5 stars Definately Yes!!.......2000-10-10

Okay, he's from Costa Rica, grew up in New York and can't stop his love affair with flamenco, latin rhythms and percussion. With this mix of influences it isn't hard to find yourself captivated with Carranza's latest release, Playa Gitana (Gypsy Beach). An excellent and ambitious follow-up to his previous work on Flamenco De La Costa. Don't take this guy's guitar away, but I've read in an interview that if he were stranded on a desert beach and his last string broke, he'd just keep playing his guitar like a drum. Gotta love that!

    Album Description

Guitarist Wayne Wesley Johnson brings together a diverse group of musicians for his 2003 solo release "Canciones Del Alma", meaning `songs from the soul`. On several tracks, Johnson integrates Chinese pentatonic melodies perfomed on guitar, guitar synthesizer and pipa (Gao Hong) blended with Spanish and Latin rumba flamenco rhythms and further complimented with Bolivian pan flutes and charango (Mario Reynolds). Another highlight is Johnson`s collaboration with Ventures guitarist Nokie Edwards

5 out of 5 stars Simply one great album for all musical tastes........2003-07-03

As a freelance reviewer most of the time I determine what I want to review, however in rare instances I get the opportunity to review something that I didn't choose. In this case it was certainly my pleasure to have the chance to hear some of the best music I have heard in a long time.

There is no doubt as to the unbelievable gift and talent that Wayne Wesley Johnson has and his ability to share this with everyone in nothing short of amazing. Throughout this album, there is a collection of 14 tracks; each one has its own unique sound and a blend of musical flavor that makes this collection one to have.

I found a mix of Rumba, Spanish guitar, jazz, fusion, classical and R & B sounds mixed together and blended in delicate, yet sharp edged sound. The set takes you through a wide range of musical emotion, from the slow and smooth to quick and fast paced.

Overall, this album is for anyone looking for the sounds that make a rainy day seem easier to handle or for those looking to take a leisurely drive or even those who just want to sit around a warm fire on a cold winter's day. My highest recommendation - you certainly won't be disappointed with this purchase!

    5 out of 5 stars Soothing & Stimulating - all in one!.......2003-02-24

I enjoy this type of music so I tend to listen to alot of it. Since Wayne is a relatively new artist, I wasn't sure of what to expect. However, after listening to the CD I can tell you that this artist (and CD) is a real undiscovered gem.

This easy listening production is some of the best music of this genre I have ever heard. Soothing and stimulating all in one very entertaining package.

As with his other works, Wayne seamlessly blends jazz, r&b and Spanish flamenco flavor with ease. The arrangements flow, the melodies captivate and you'll find yourself hitting the replay button over and over again.

This CD is a first rate entry into Wayne's already impressive portfolio. Buy it with confidence, it's loaded with tracks you'll enjoy over and over again.

Another Agent du Monde glimpse into world music, this time the result is hotter than a Spanish summer day without a tree to sit under. Make no doubt though this CD is very cool; the music hits you like a Spanish gypsy dancing in the Mediterranean breeze. If you like flamenco and it's offshoots into various fusions than you will like this disc. The fusion of flamenco and electronic dance grooves, coupled with other elemnts and styles of music presents a panorama of sounds. There are twenty-eight songs on this disc and there is rarely a dud. It is really a non-stop world muisc dance party. The integration of other songs into the mix is recognizable on certain songs which translates into listener friendly songs. Concha Buika joins electronica-nu-jazz proponents Truby Trio on "Jaleo" for a nice fusion of mourning-modern dance music. There are few chill out tunes including "Guitara G" by G Club presents Banda Sonora that is on the order of B-Tribe with spacey-effects and a chill guitar and "DNA by Turkish Flamenco which is is beautiful synthesis of Middle East meets Spain on the couch dancefloor music and "Brazilenco" by Zeb which is a curious blend of sambaesque-flamenco that grooves and soothes simultaneously; these are only a few of the chill out so unds featured, there are many more. One of the more well known groups from the fusion groups featured here is Ojos de Brujo, they lend "Tiempo de Drumba" which is a dazzling hipnotic groove and "Ventilador-80" which is a rhumba-electronic mix that is an especially good song. Several other known artists to flamenco-fusion afficionados are Pepe Habichuela who contributes "Yerbabuena" which is Middle Eastern Spanish guitar sounding homage to the good herb and Raul Orellana with his chill out mix entitled "Entre Dos Amigos". The lesser known artists are all very good and the total package for this disc is very complete, the result is a cohesive sound that brings the diverse music together. Recommended for nuevo flamenco afficionados.

It took me a while to get into this album but once I clicked I totally loved it. It is a really great album for all ages - I can put it on for my parents' dinner parties or when I'm entertaining my friends in their 20s. All of my guests who have heard the Barcelona Files have made very positive comments and several have gone out and purchased their own copies. It is a great soundtrack to put on in the background - whilst being up-beat it is not intrusive into good conversation. I highly reccomend this CD to anyone who loves a modern take on traditional Spanish sounds or those who just love anything Spanish.
