Too many soundtracks feel interchangeable, and rare are the composers who really capture a movie's core. But Javier Navarrete has succeeded in his Oscar-nominated score for Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, a dark fantasy set in 1944 Spain. The first cue, "Long, Long Time Ago," sets the melancholy tone with piano and voice; the spectral piano pops up several more times, and the theme is more fully developed in "Mercedes Lullaby." But it's the second track, the aptly titled "The Labyrinth," that really gives the listener insight into the movie's tenebrous universe. While Navarrete can certainly do short, intimate pieces dotted with telling arrangements (like the few trumpet notes adding a subtle Spanish flavor to "Rose, Dragon"), he excels on the longer tracks, such as "Not Human," which goes through a succession of moods, each one increasingly scary, without ever going overboard into cheap, demonstrative effects. Navarrete has already had a long career as a film scorer in Spain, and this won't be the last American audiences hear from him. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow.....I am speechless.......2007-07-06

I hardly can find the words to describe this music. Beautiful. Haunting and absolutely stirring. That is just the tip of the iceberg. I found the film itself, in it's own way, a great film but the music is what gave the film its ability to communicate with the viewer. My only regret is that the CD is not necessarily a CD to take a nap too. There are a few tracks that seem to keep me awake, making them great in their own way. But the music of Pan's Labrynth is some of the best music ever written for a film. Full of beautiful lullabies, dark, haunting brass and strings, and majestic, sweeping and imagination-driving moments. A must own CD. An ABSOLUTE must.

5 out of 5 stars Intricate Simplicity.......2007-06-12

The movie was great, even though it was in Spanish the soundtrack pulled everything together for me. The music is simplistic in its melodies yet conveys deep emotions. I love to listen to it to relax or just for something different. I think it is one of the best scores I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Melodious.......2007-06-09

Many use the word "haunting" to describe the music on this CD, and that is certainly true. It compliments the movie wonderfully and leaves quite the impression. I found my emotions on a rollercoaster, from soothed and comforted to pensive to apprehensive, as each composition played through. I thought it all masterfully composed and unlike anything I've heard. I give it a solid recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful soundtrack for a beautiful movie.......2007-05-23

This music is great, I listen to it to get to sleep and I listen to it when I want to wake up. I love the fantastical and lullaby-like songs within it but also those that stir the blood. Although one fault I have found is that the same lullaby sound, such as in track #1 tends to repeat in other tracks, so unless you really like the tune be prepared for that. Otherwise, it is just something different to listen to when you don't feel like blasting your brain out with something wordy or too over dramatic.

4 out of 5 stars moving score for a moving film.......2007-05-14

This score masterfully evokes the feeling of the fantasy world of the movie. The touching themes effectively convey the emotions of the characters and provide an enjoyable listen from beginning to end.

Album Description

Paprika is a Japanese animated film, based on Yasutaka Tsutsui's 1993 novel about a female detective who investigates criminal cases by entering the dreams of her subjects. The film was directed by Satoshi Kon, animated by Madhouse Studios and will be released by Sony Pictures Classics on May 25, 2007. The original score was composed by Susumu Hirasawa who also composed the soundtrack for Kon's award-winning film, Millennium Actress, and equally-lauded television series, "Paranoia Agent."

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic film score.......2007-06-14

I had the immense pleasure of seeing the anime film "Paprika" this past weekend. The animation was visual eye candy with its vibrant colors and original designs. The storyline kept me riveted for all 90 minutes of the film. My favorite aspect of the film though has to be Susumu Hirasawa's film score. I was immediately taken with the music. The style of music is all over the place on this short 43 minute long cd. One minute the music has a catchy techno/pop beat and the next a loud, bombastic marching band sound. My favorite songs on the soundtrack is easily "Parade" (both versions), "Mediational Field", and "The Girl in Byakkoya" by White Tiger Field. This is my first time I have heard of Susumu Hirasawa's work and I must say I loved what I heard. His work is nothing I have ever heard before on any given soundtrack. It is so schizophrenic with its varied sounds yet it works. This is a great souvenir to own after seeing the film (which I absolutely loved).

5 out of 5 stars 5000 mph.......2007-06-06

I haven't seen the film yet, but I'm loving this soundtrack you know? Highly recommended. If you're familiar with Susumu Hirasawa's music on "Millenium Actress" and "Paranoia Agent" you will more than likely enjoy this as well. The most notable tracks are "A Drop Filled with Memories", "Mediational Field" which will urge you to drive 5,000 miles per hour and "Chaser". A well-rounded anime soundtrack that should be HEARD by EVERYONE!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars the good songs are very good.......2007-06-26

I really like this CD. The songs that are not so good (in my opinion) are still tolerable. The very good ones are just that...outstanding. I am biased because I really like the show and the music really adds to the on-screen events. I do think that you probably need to be a fan of the show to like most of the music on this CD...

4 out of 5 stars Fits the Mood of the Show.......2007-06-16

Judged on its own, this would probably get a 3-star rating. Rated by knowing the show, it should get 5 stars, but the last track is worth a demotion of one star (it's that bad). Most music must be enjoyed according to your mood, and this CD gives one an eerie feeling, almost depressing, but the beauty of it keeps it above the depressive level. Like the series, there's a chill to the overall tone with just enough hope in there to emulate the series to perfection.

Aye, the opening song (the best cut) is WAY too short: I thought like the Geico theme song, "Remind Me," there was surely a longer version. Still even at just over a minute, it's worth buying. Very moody, but very worth listening to!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad for a TV soundtrack.......2007-06-02

I've bought a few TV soundtracks over the years and have sometimes been dissatisfied by them. I rarely remember the selections as being used in the series, The 4400 is no exception but at least it seems to have a nice sound to it.
About all that really stood out for me was the theme song, #1 "A Place in Time" (really the only reason I even bought the CD) and I think I remember #11 "Salvation" being used at some point. The rest of the selections don't mean much to me but they're a good fit and if you like one you'll probably like most of the rest. The worst piece was #12, the instrumental version of the theme- instrumental adaptations rarely work well and this was no exception.

4 out of 5 stars Another great TV soundtrack........2007-05-10

I'm not really into this show but I bought the CD due to the track listing and it's a real good surprise even if I already knew a couple of it:
1) A place in time : apparently the show's theme,nice but a little too short. 4/5
2) This is your life : oh my god! masterpiece! love the band and this one is one of their best by far. 5/5
3) falling by the wayside : really good follow up to this is your life. 5/5
4) into the fire : the same .5/5
5) worry about you : a changing a tone but for the best. It's one of my favorite band and fav song. 5/5
6) how do you say goodbye? : on the verge of into the fire and falling by the wayside. 4,5/5
7) she will be loved : masterpiece but doesn't fit at all with the rest of the CD exept maybe the newt one,shy baby. 5/5
8) shy baby : great discovery on the CD and a great song with a beautiful voice, all little folk to chill. 5/5
9) do the buildings and cops make you smile?: normal follow up to the rest of the songs. 5/5
10) cheek to cheek: same as she will be loved exept that we can't relate it to any other song from the CD.4/5
11) salvation : not a fan of the show so don't really care about this one but it's nice, way to short but nice. 3/5
12) a place in time: another score which is a remix of the theme song.Should have been sang. 3/5
If you're a fan of the show,well buy it cause it's really good,if not,buy it anyway,it's a really good CD,trust me.

Amazon.com essential recording

This live recording of the 1955 Visconti production at La Scala is the best of the available Maria Callas Traviatas. Aside from a minor pitch problem or two, she's in great voice, coloring phrases to reveal character and investing the coloratura with variety and passion. Her "Addio del passato" is heart-breaking. She fully captures Violetta's pride and vulnerability in the scene with Germont, though her partner, Ettore Bastianini, sings insensitively, if beautifully. Giuseppe Di Stefano is all one could ask for as Alfredo. Carlo Giulini conducts a performance that delivers all the lyricism and drama of the score. The recorded sound is primitive, but in EMI's latest transfer you can listen through it to a wondrous performance. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Verdi: Opera LaTraviata.......2007-07-04

Enjoyable recording, singers Maria Callas, DiStefano,Bastianini surperb. Clarity as if recently recorded. Orchestra and chorus fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars The Sound is very listenable.......2007-01-05

Don't be put off by other reviewers' rants on the sound of this superb performance. If you're comfortable listening to some of the better Opera D'Oro sets, you'll find this more than satisfactory. I ordered it recently despite those complaints and am VERY glad I did. If you want to hear truly unforgivable EMI sound of a pirate Callas, listen to the MACBETH; you'll then see what a good job EMI did with this Callas performance. But if you decide you want the Lisbon TRAVIATA instead of this one, just about everyone says the Pearl is far superior to EMI in their remastering job.

4 out of 5 stars Come closer to Maria Callas.......2007-01-03

This CD is a master piece of Maria Callas' performance. Together with Stefano, they created a milestone that their followers are difficult to overpass. Listen to this live, you feel you were back in 1955. The atmosphere it produced is fresh and new to the later generations. But because the record technique as mono, not stereo, if you feel untolerable for the mono, it will cut your expectation little bit. But generally, if you are really a fans of Maria Callas, you will definately like it.

5 out of 5 stars Best of La Traviata and Maria Callas.......2006-11-13

Even though this recording is not stereophonic, you can still enjoy the marvelous voice of Maria Callas. You don't have to see her performance to understand how artistic she was. With her voice she was not actually singing, but she was acting as well. Not many singers could portrait Violetta's character like Maria Callas portraits in this particular recording. I would definitely recommend everyone who is interested in operas or not interested at all. La Traviata in general is a very light opera, so you do not have to be an opera buff to like it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best..........2006-03-19

This recording of one of the greatest Verdi's opera is surely the best I've ever heard. Callas was at her top, others interprets are excellent also. A great historical piece of art.

5 out of 5 stars Stick with the Plot.......2007-02-09

Puccini.

Up there with Mozart when it comes to tearing the heart out of your soul.

Maria Callas - what a sexy women - no wonder that rich Greek fella courted her. She is a diamond, a truly wonderful opera singer. No, she is better than that. Maria Callas interprets the music into an emotional fury that extends passion and mundanity to their horizons.

Why buy Playboy when you can get the real deal right here. Smouldering femininity with knobs on. Simply the best.

3 out of 5 stars Callas, an over-rated soprano.......2006-12-22

Nicolai Gedda as B.F Pinkerton is brilliant, a true showman in the role and a brilliant tenor full-stop. Callas on the other was not good at Cio-Cio San, in fact she was terrible.
It truly shows the difference between the two lead roles vocal technique and capability, in 'Vogliatemi bene', Gedda was brilliant note perfect and tone perfect, Callas was terrible she shrieked most of her way through the duet and sang a shrill top C at the end which compared with Gedda's masterful top C was a piece of dirt.
If you disagree listen the the track over and over again, see how shrill and whiney Callas's top C really is.

All over brilliant performance by Gedda, Callas was unworthy of such a great Pinkerton.

5 out of 5 stars It's a SHOCK!.......2005-12-21

It's a SHOCK how Callas interpreted "Madama Butterfly" It's close to perfect. Must listen for opera lovers!

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps The Best Recorded "Madama Butterfly".......2005-09-07

There are many "Butterfly" recordings out there that are excellent in their own right but this recording deserves a category of excellence all it's own. What almost looks like mis-casting on paper, Callas does an astonishing job with the title role, which she recorded months before singing a series in Chicago and never to touch the role again. This is really one of those recordings that should be considered an historical event in the history of recorded opera. The collaboration of all the principles with von Karajan shows a unique unity that hasn't been duplicated very often.

But there's Callas' Cio Cio San that is really the reason to consider this recording. Even her silences, such as when she notices Kate in the garden in the final scenes, speaks volumes. There's this incredible thread that she creates from her entrance to her death that is like nothing I've ever heard before in this role. Also her choice of tone is remarkable and characteristic of this most chameleon of artists. She transforms herself from child to woman during the love duet and really does not sing at full tilt until the heart rendering final scene. This is an amazing studio portrayal and like I said, absolutely historical.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2005-08-09

I purchased Madama Butterfly and Macbeth online a couple of years ago. I listened to Macbeth first and was astonished. Then I decided to listen to Butterfly. When I heard Butterfly's entrance (Ancora un passo or via) I wasn't sure if the woman singing was Callas. As she went on singing, I was shocked. I couldn't believe my ears that this was the same woman I just heard a few minutes back singing evil Lady Macbeth. It was like listening to another singer. The transformation of the voice was a work of art itself. Listen to the way she says MORTO. The other highlights of this masterwork are the love duet, her mastery singing of un bel di, and her bone chilling con onor moure.
This recording is an excellent example of her artistry. Maria Callas' ability to change the tone of her voice for the different roles she performed onstage and recordings was great achievement. This is one of the many reasons why I love her so much. She has helped me through some tough times in the past. Whenever I was in need of inspiration, Callas came to the rescue. Maria Callas is my idol and I am grateful and honored to be part of the Maria Callas experience.

DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. An entrancing set. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars A Man and His Art - Magnificently Captured.......2007-04-06

This 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.

There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.

Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.

Underdog athlete triumphs against all the odds and finds more than mere victory in the bargain--it's a cinematic tradition that stretches considerably beyond the Rocky franchise. But this 2002 UK hit about an East Asian immigrant teen who dreams of becoming a soccer star puts a winning new trans-cultural spin on the formula. The film's song-score is as savory, playful and determined as the film itself, a rich collection of mostly contemporary tracks that shakes up an evocative cocktail of pop infused with soul, club mixes, cool jazz, new wave, traditional Indian flourishes, and even a parting, triumphant shot of Puccini. Victoria Beckham, former Spice Girl and wife of titular inspiration/soccer legend David Beckham weighs in with the breathy neo-disco of "I Wish," while fellow Spicester Mel C offers up the sprightly pop of "Independence Day." But it's the dizzying array of transplanted Indian pop music--oft-performed by the winning team of Brit Billy Sagoo and American vocalist Gunjan--that makes the album such a winning delight. This is world music with a dancefloor beat and a smile. --Jerry McCulley

A very nice film, family style for a nice afternoon or evening at home, for those who love football it's a light comedy that brings in the right blend of global culture mix in that we live coupled with some other issues that we all have to deal with some time or the other. Very entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars Cool, Chill out tracks from India.......2007-02-21

After listening a few times to this CD, you'll forget it's a Soundtrack to a movie because of the mainly Asian Indidan artists/singers featured, although a few dialogue from the movie has been inserted here and there,
". . . look down, don't smile, Indian Brides don't smile, you'll ruin the bloody video!"
The stand out song for me is "Noorie." Whatever she's singing about, it must be good, myself not understanding any Hindi or maybe its in Punjabi. The singer has this begging, sexy voice. I am convince she's singing about a lost love or some orgasmic encounter, please don't tell me the song is about cooking Aloo Gobi. Anyway, if you're looking for some really cool, chill out tracks from Indian, this soundtrack will fit the bill. Overall, it has that world music quality that appeals to willing ears: rhymthmic drums, infectious beat and exotic melodies. Highly recommended, gets you in the mood for some Indian food.

I've read the other reviews, and people seem to hate the song by Victoria Beckham (I Wish). Those people are completely crazy. The 2 best sogns on here are I Wish and Independence Day. They are both by former Spice Girls.

This soundtrack rocks, although I didn't really care for the movie.

Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. In all, the soundtrack's pleasing variety of Eastern music mirrors the film's old and new worlds living within a singular culture. --Bryan Reesman

I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!

The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.

This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!

5 out of 5 stars Love It, Love It, Love It.......2007-01-21

I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.

I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."

4 out of 5 stars Culture-Happy-Dance-Reflect-Appreciate-Savor-Relax-Laugh.......2006-11-06

Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

5 out of 5 stars Music & Movie on equal par - brilliant.......2007-05-18

I first heard music from this fine movie, while looking at a memorial sight on the web.

The music was the beautiful "Killer Angels" and after buying the movie? Wow! Where can I get the full CD?

The opening is simply brilliant, a piece of music that has a lot of feeling. "Men of Honour" is a real theme of the film. When it comes to brilliance, "Fife and Gun" has a sound of its own {the charge of the black hats}. There is excitement in "Over The Fence","Battle Of Little Round Top" and "The First Battle".

Then there is the quiet and meaningful side of Randy Edelman with, "General Lee at Twilight","Dawn",the beautiful "From History to Legend",and of course my favourite "Killer Angels",one of the prettiest instrumentals ever.

This is simply a wonderful CD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-11-19

This soundtrack is one of my favorite CD's of all time. The music is captivating, sad, and haunting. If you have read "Killer Angels" or the this movie based off that book it gives the music a whole new life. It transports you into a time when the rules of war were different, much more gentile and honor based. However, the score is hauntingly beautiful even for non-Civil War enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Music! Some of the best I've ever heard!.......2006-07-13

The movie is awesome, but the cd is equally amazing. Awe-inspiring, from quiet, peaceful music to the full orchestra in the finale at the end, this is one of the best soundtracks ever written! A great gift to yourself or friends.

Amazon.com essential recording

Little can be added to what's been written about this landmark recording, except that Walter Legge's 1953 mono production yields nothing to modern Tosca recordings for vivacity and theatrical impact--especially Maria Callas's. The miraculous Victor de Sabata conjures up a vibrant, inspiring orchestral canvas that enables Callas and her stellar cohorts to work their magic. Tito Gobbi and Callas spur each other on to heights in which the characters take over from the singers in the listener's mind. Giuseppe Di Stefano is on his best behavior, and in fresher voice than on his fine Leontyne Price-Herbert von Karajan remake. On this set, EMI includes texts, translations, and notes that discuss this recording in the context of Callas's mercurial career. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars The Incomparable Callas .......2007-05-13

She was sui generis (unlike any other) and for any fan of Mme. Callas this CD is a "must have!!! For the younger generation who were not fortunate enough to have ever heard her in person, her voice, although imperfect, portrays the complexity of Floria Tosca, through the delicate shadings of Callas' voice. Tosca is vulnerable, she is jealous, she is loving, she is delicate and tough at the same time. All of this is plain to hear through the marvel of this greatest of singing actresses.

5 out of 5 stars A complete classic among classics.......2007-03-19

This is one of the few opera recordings that can reach immortality. De Sabata conducts superb over orchestra and a trinity of "monsters": Di Stefano, Callas and Gobbi understood not only the music but the drama. Opera as it always must be. What can we say about the climatic experience of Callas and Gobbi together, probably the most talented actors in opera?
At the end, pay attention (it is impossible not to) to Tosca's death... In the voice of Callas, no other soprano in history have achieved such perfection.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar cast - stellar performance.......2007-01-11

What more can be said about this recording that has not already been abundantly elaborated?
Callas at her best with a supporting cast that made this recording stand the test of time. I received two recordings this Christmas as a present so that I can compare and perhaps change my mind (the Alagna - Gheorghiou & the Leontyne Price sets). I listened carefully and although I have to admit that Price's voice has a more melodic sonority Callas was the ultimate performer what little she may have lacked in her voice she more than made with her dramatic qualities, she had a stage presence that can be "heard" without having to watch her.
This is truly a premier performance of an operatic masterpiece. Enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars A "Regular People" Review.......2006-12-04

Hey I'm an Opera newbie trying to find his way around the maze with the help of Opera 101 (any Opera guru's out there that would like to help me out here?). Thanks to the Books advice I picked up this Opera and WOW! This is great stuff. Don't be intimidated by Opera you'll be missing out on this!

5 out of 5 stars this is not a review.......2006-08-15

Just the fact that this product has gathered 123 reviewers by the time I write my first comment ever in a similar internet site, should tell something per se... I am a singer myself. I could write endless technical comments on the slightest vocal or musical nuance these four legendary musicians have contributed here. Empty words! Just ask yourselves: "Do I really and humbly love Music!?" If the answer is "YES!!!", run and buy this recording.

PS. Listen with the libretto in your hands (translation of it if you dont speak italian). Do it. At least the first time through... a Sunday afternoon. You'll remember me.
