La Mama [Import]

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Charles Aznavour's La Mamma appeared in 1963, ten years after his first real chart hit, Jezebel. Gone are the Maurice Chevalier cribs and the Louis Prima stylistics. In their place is a sense of poetic French drama, a command of his own gravelly voice even Aznavour thought impossible, and a pop singer so theatrical in his delivery he has been caricatured more than any other French vocalist. 1995 reissue fro EMI Holland. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Pat Metheny and his keyboard collaborator, Lyle Mays, have drawn on diverse sources for their music, combining folk, jazz, country, Latin, and world elements into a tuneful and often electronic mix. Bob Curnow is a veteran of the Stan Kenton Orchestra, and part of his avowed intention here is to set some of the Metheny and Mays compositions within the Kenton style. In keeping with that model, Curnow has assembled a very big band, 20 members strong with five trumpets and five trombones. It's an arresting project, and Curnow has successfully reconceived the Metheny work, substituting layered acoustic winds where electric guitars and keyboards were, enriching the textures and supplying orchestral breadth to what was once more intimate music. Metheny's prettier tunes, such as the ballad "If I Could," take on a Henry Mancini-like luster in this new setting. The sectional play is polished and energetic, and there are plenty of good soloists, including tenor saxophonist Rob Lockart, trombonist Chuck Hughes, and guitarist Paul Viapiano, who frequently provides a sonic bridge between the worlds of Metheny and Curnow. The sound is audiophile quality and the music provides a new look at both Metheny's music and the big-band tradition. --Stuart Broomer

Album Description

An amazingly successful translation of the inimitable compositions of the Pat Metheny Group into the idiom of big band jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Blast From The Past!.......2007-05-18

I played this arrangement of "The First Circle" in college jazz ensemble and it was one of THE highlights of anything we played. The clapping part was really fun, and it changes time signature every few measures so it was wicked difficult too. Wow, I remember combing the CD stores looking for this gem back before Amazon existed!

What great, great charts these are by Curnow, and Mays, two amazing musicians. And these are some of Pat Metheny's best, Minuano and Letter From Home are also standouts. Flat-out fantastic modern big band writing, absolute TOP recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive.......2006-09-24

Hearing Metheney's tunes in a different context, apart from his guitar and Mayes' ubiquitous synth, really helps you to appreciate what strong, memorable themes Metheny writes. And Curnow's arrangments are first rate; he knows just what voice to assign where. The result is classic big band sound with some of the hippest tunes ever arranged for that settings. Listening to this makes me wish I was still in my high school big band, so that I might get a chance to play some of Curnow's charts!

4 out of 5 stars Good Buy.......2006-03-17

I really enjoyed this CD. I love the music of Pat Metheny and the big band arrangements on the album are great. Personal favourites are "Minuano" and "Have You Heard." Reccomend for anyone that enjoys a more serious big band and not the poxy Glenn Miller sound.

5 out of 5 stars Current, fresh, and it swings.........2005-05-15

This is a rich CD that you can listen to over and over again.
My favorite is Always and Forever where Bobby Shew's flugelhorn is funky and beautiful. Every Summer Night is light and interesting with a rhythm that moves it along. In Her Family is haunting.
The rhythms and orchestrations still sound fresh after over a decade.
Although I have not been a Pat Metheny fan nor a fan of the guitar in jazz, this music goes beyond just soft jazz that one hears in an elevator...
Is it a curse or a blessing that jazz is being picked up for background use? Just when we thought younger listeners would delve into the richness of Miles, Ella, Kenton, Gil Evans and Basie after being exposed to jazz, I hear it dismissed as dental office music !!
This is a richly orchestrated CD that supplies a strong background for soloists like Shew and Bill Cunliffe.
One can hear Curnow's roots in the Kenton orchestra and as has been mentioned before.."Is this CD what Kenton might have been doing now?"
Incredibly interesting rhythms and a great rhythm section to execute them.

4 out of 5 stars Hits both ends of the spectrum.......2005-01-23

On a first listening to this cd, it was wonderful, and gets a bit better each time you re-listen.

Most of the charts were good, some, like Minuano, Dream of the Return and In Her Family were excellent.
The one that really blew me away was If I Could, which doesnt suffer at all compared to the original Metheny version.

I did find some VERY lacking. Letter From Home, which was always my favourite ballad from the original album, has absolutely no feeling in it. It seemed straightforward, and very dead, missing all the emotion Mays put into it.

Overall great arrangements by Curnow, and with the exception of Letter From Home, an Excellent CD. I would reccomend buying it.

4 out of 5 stars Very good CD for the price.......2000-08-14

I have just listened to the whole CD and except for three tracks I think Pippo's singing is excellent. We have to listen to this CD for what it really is.A re-recording of live performances dating back almost 50 years. We can't expect today's digital quality recordings sound. On the first track,we hear Che Gelida Manina from a 31 year old Pippo who obviously was having a bad night, which is not uncommon with most singers.Tracks 18 & 19 definitely show Pippo in decline, but I didn't find band 18 as bad as another reviewer did.I counted only two vocal flaws. The rest of the aria is sung not that bad for a declining Pippo.Track 19 is sung well, but as in track 18 the voice sounds like it's getting tired. The rest of the singing on the CD,I enjoyed, especially the Addio Alla Madre.I would say that is my favorite on the CD.In my opinion,it's an ecellent CD for the price and it does contain some excellent singing and also is of historical value.

Pippo's Biggest Fan.

4 out of 5 stars A musical history.......1999-12-12

I purchased this recording when it first became available. It is an important for as a historical document on one of the greatest tenors in the history of opera. Yes, his voice has a very apparent decline. And yes track 18 (Una furitiva lagrima) has cracked notes and other obvious vocal flaws. What the other reviewer has missed (but the audience didn't - which is why the aria was greeted with such enthusiasm) was the passion, the emotion that Di Stefano put into his singing. I make no excuses, I am an ardent Di Stefano devotee. His early singing was glorious, pure beauty. His later singing lost it's pure beauty, but gained passion and emotion.

This disc is important because it traces this transition.

3 out of 5 stars Only for die-hard Di Stefano fans.......1999-03-24

I picked up this CD on a whim. The liner notes are useful, and describe the meteoric rise and fall of DiStefano's career, his temperment and ego.

The CD covers a period of only 11 years, but the deterioration of his voice during that period is frightening. Track 1 (1962) 'Che Gelida Manina' showcases a much fresher voice, but he strains terribly for the high 'C' and never even gets close. Track 18 (1963) 'Una furtiva lagrima' is full of embarrassments- chokes, flat notes, etc. - yet the live audience eats it up.

Di Stefano had stopped singing by the time I became an opera fan. This disk clearly shows why. Being a famous operatic tenor is not always about vocal quality (James McCracken, anyone?), and Di Stefano was certainly an exciting siger. There is some beautiful music on this CD, but I find it to be of mostly historical interest.

4 out of 5 stars it's early for this ensemble...but STILL..........2001-08-07

This is the oldest available CD featuring Michael Posch and Thomas Wimmer. They go on to become members of Accentus/Oni Wytars/Unicorn, easily the most formidable early music instrumental ensemble in existence. Here, their skills certainly aren't what they'll become. But even amid their slightly hesitant and unrefined playing, their phenomenal musical spirit shines through. Thomas Wimmer is the only early musician I've heard who can sound so compelling with so little technique! I wouldn't recommend this CD as authentic Sephardic music (which isn't verifiably medieval), but it's a welcome addition to any collection solely on the basis of its engaged arrangements and presentation. The earliest tender shoot of a grand tree...

5 out of 5 stars A glorious heritage, well sounded.......2005-10-05

This music has a distinctive Spanish flavour to it - the guitar introduction on the first track is unmistakably Spanish; this is a tradition that dates back to the time before Columbus discovered the 'new' world, which ironically was the same year Ferdinand and Isabella issued their edict of expulsion to the Jews in Spain. The Sephardic Jews took their musical traditions with them when they left, such that the Spanish influences in their culture permeated the Jewish communities in other parts of Europe.

There are all sorts of music on this disc, that covers the whole range of pieces from the Sephardic culture - there are love songs, lullabies, and storytelling songs. Women feature prominently in the stories, and most likely in the composition, of many of the pieces here. Many pieces, however, have come down to the present time without composer/author credits. These could be the songs of many Mediterranean cultures; that they are Jewish is indicated in some of the details of the lyrics rather than the style of music itself. References to Hebrew Scriptures in certain ways, and certain Jewish customs and officials (such as the Moel, the one who performs circumcision) indicate the kinds of details present here.

La Rondinella makes use of wind and string instruments, most likely the same kinds of instruments used by the folk singers who would have been the original performers. Included here as performers are Paul Bensel (recorder, crumhorn, percussion), Howard Bass (lute, guitar, harp, percussion), Rosalind Brooks Stowe (treble viol, vielle, percussion), and Tina Chancey as a guest artist (treble viol, vielle, rebec, kamenj, recorder, percussion), with the alto vocals of Alice Kosloski. La Rondinella was established in 1987 in Washington D.C. as a group dedicated to older styles of music such as Sephardic, English, Scottish and Italian music.

The performances here are simply stunning, and remarkable in the fullness of sound and one with so few players. The care and spirit infused into the performances is wonderful. The emotion is very strongly present, particularly in pieces that give a sense of longing and wandering, a very well-known feeling among the Sephardim.

5 out of 5 stars a Hispanophile and Judeophile.......2005-08-24

This is a great album. The pieces are both instrumental and sung, with a range of themes. There are both lively and slow pieces on this album. The voices are clear, the harmonies are lovely, and with the lyrics, the words are fairly easy to follow and understand. If you already speak Spanish, you will find it easier to understand the medieval Castilian and so that knowledge provides a way in, but if you just like music and are interested in Jewish traditions, that offers an alternative route into the music.

5 out of 5 stars hauntingly beautiful simplicity.......2000-02-05

A jewel of a recording. Alice Koslozski teamed up with La Rondinella for several more recordings of Sephardic and Spanish Renaissance songs, but this one, the first, is the very best: they are all technically excellent, but this CD has the best song selection.

La Rondinella produces great earthy and colorful Medieval timbres. Kozloski's mezzo singing is lyrical and moving, some where on the spectrum between lieder singer and folk singer.

The songs have a hauntingly beautiful simplicity - they are a relevant today as they were 600 years ago. The booklet contains all the Ladino texts - if you know a little Spanish, they are quite understandable.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous collection!.......1999-04-03

This is a collection of songs that covers the broad spectrum of love, loss, hopes, and dreams. This music truly is expressed from the heart. It is interpreted by an excellent group of musicians who attempt successfully, I believe, to express the emotions and music of this particular era. This is a must-buy for anyone who is a serious collector.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting representation of the singer.......2003-11-07

Eva Turner was condemned to be remembered as a one role singer; the role of Turrandot. Her artistry went far beyond that. She was a slow starter in many ways, and it took a considerable amount of time for major houses outside Italy to notice her. Yes, she was enjoyed and used in the Italian opera houses, but ignored in her own land. Eventually, she made her debut there and was a hit. Her voice is not to everyone's liking, and some critics found her interpretations very "ordinary." Some felt she couldn't color her voice enough to render complete interpretations of the roles she sang.

The real problem was her voice was not subtle at all. Through her development it grew and grew in size (many other singers didn't want to sing with her, not because of her personality -- she was a trouper, but because they had to strain so to be heard when singing with her). As with all very large voices, the virtues are astonishing and the vices just as pronounced. Perhaps she was not capable of much subtle coloring as many smaller voices were capable of, but she was able to "raise the roof" in the theatres she sang in, and present a very powerful living drama. Her intonation was nearly perfect at all times. And, unlike is often thought, she had great stage presence.

Finally, when a role came her way, one in which she had no competition, people were willing to actually open their ears and hear what she had to offer.

This set of recordings is very interesting to listen to. Yes, as with all "complete works of anyone" we hear repeats of various arias. The key then is to listen and see what changes had developed as the performer expanded their understanding of the role. Few singers really show much development in that regard. In this case, there are improvements that we hear from time to time.

Some of the pieces recorded do nothing for me, and I wouldn't have wasted the time recording them, however, they reflect what producers were having singers record at that time.

One role that Turner sang and excelled in was the Leonora from Trovatore. Yes, she had the necessary agility. She even produced a beautiful trill. Sadly, nothing here gives evidence to this fact.

I recommend this recording for those interested in having recordings of this great and under appreciated singer who had so much to give. I recommend it also for those interested in hearing a truly huge voice (some say that even Nilsson could come close to the power of Turner) recorded with minimal destortion. We are not able to know exactly how magnificent her voice really was, not even through these recordings, but we can hear the even quality of her noble instrument.

It is a pricey set, but for those who are interested in historic recordings of very famous singers, I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Voice of a Legend.......2001-01-13

Dame Eva Turner was arguably the greatest singer that England produced in the last century. Sadly, she was also one of the most under-recorded singers in history. This compilation finally releases in one package all of the material that we know of at this time. Unfortunately, that means that there are numerous recordings of the same arias, done at different times. Rumors continue as to the existence of more material in the vaults of companies in England, but none of that is available.

What you will hear is the voice of the definitive Turandot, a role which Dame Eva premiered in many houses, though the first performance of the opera was sung by Rosa Raisa. However, Franco Alfano, who completed the opera after Puccini's death proclaimed Dame Eva as the perfect Turandot. She effortlessly produces enormous waves of sound that are, at turns, steely or supple. Her instrument was one that has only been equaled by the great Birgit Nilsson.

Dame Eva left the stage in 1949 and moved to Oklahoma, where she was a professor of voice at the University of Oklahoma for 10 years before returning to her native England and taking her place on the faculty of the Royal Conservatory. She died in 1990, at the age of 98.

5 out of 5 stars The One & Only - Corelli .......2005-05-01

I have been reading the rave reviews of this CD and listening to the samples and after doing so I am going to purchase another Corelli CD. I am never disappointed in his voice. He was and is the greatest tenor of all time - - - bar none. Once again, B R A V O Corelli!!

5 out of 5 stars FRANCO CORELLI AT HIS BEST!.......2002-12-20

This compilation of moments from various complete opera studio recordings gives a very good idea about the legendary tenor Franco Corelli. Unfortunately most of the complete sets have one or two singers who are not ideal, therefore only a few opera recordings with Corelli can be recommended as first-choice recordings. EMI here has put together most of Corelli's best moments! He is heard in his glorious prime! Endless breath, electrifying high notes and power, power, power characterise his singing. My only objection is that his stentorian voice can sometimes become tiring. If only, however, we had such a tenor today! Of all the roles here, his Pollione and Manrico impressed me the most but everything else is also amazing. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars SPLENDID!!!.......2002-12-02

If you have not heard Franco Corelli, this cd is a good start. It gives a fine portrait of Mr.Corelli. It`s one of my most-played records ever. It's so exciting. But watch out! After listening to it, you can find many other tenors a little bit boring if you`re comparing. Of course Corelli had his faults he too and they are easy to find, but when you hear the thrilling sound of this abnormal tenorvoice, his brilliant boldly high notes, his intensity, they are very easy to ignore.
So if you`re looking for a different singer, buy this one and
you`re gonna be excited!

5 out of 5 stars In A Class By Himself.......2001-05-14

Franco Corelli, who sang from 1951 to 1975, was the greatest tenore di forza of the postwar era. A powerful and exciting singer, never a subtle, elegant, or refined one, he had his detractors (who called him crude, vulgar, self-indulgent, and who lambasted his execrable French), but there can be no argument about the quality of his voice, a big, vibrant tenor with a thrilling timbre (often described as rich, dark, or baritonal) and a brilliant, secure top that must have been the envy and despair of other tenors. A nervous performer repeatedly subject to pre-performance jitters and anxiety attacks (a wag once said of him that Corelli could always think of more reasons not to sing than to sing), once onstage he was a generous singer who gave fully of himself and, like Caruso, poured out his magnificent voice unstintingly, never holding back.

The voice itself was one of the glories of the generously-endowed operatic scene of the Fifties and Sixties, and one of greatest tenor voices of the century. Herbert von Karajan said of Corelli, "A voice of heroic power, yet with great beauty of tone; darkly sensuous, mysteriously melancholic . . . but above all, a voice of thunder and lightning, fire and blood." Harold C. Schonberg, senior music of the New York Times, reviewing Corelli's Metropolitan debut in 1961, noted that his voice "has something of an exciting animal drive about it, and when Mr. Corelli lets loose, he can dominate an ensemble," and later described his voice as "a force of nature, an act of God, the vocal equivalent of an earthquake, volcano or hurricane." The distinguished musicologist Paul Henry Lang writing in the New York Herald-Tribune called Corelli "a latter-day Caruso." Alan Rich of the New York Herald-Tribune wrote of him, "There is no tenor in modern times, Italian or otherwise, whose voice rings out with greater vibrancy, whose every tone carries with it emotion at white heat. The sounds he makes, seemingly without effort, are dazzlingly bright, urgent, and communicative." Since Corelli's retirement we haven't heard anything remotely like him, and those of us who know his voice (and Bjorling's) can perhaps be pardoned for finding the "three tenors" so popular today somewhat anemic in comparison.

I have been an admirer of Corelli, a collector of his recordings, and a follower of his career since the 1950s (before he sang in America, when his only recordings were Italian Cetra imports). I have just about everything he recorded. This CD is a fine, representative selection of Corelli's Angel/EMI studio recordings from the 1960s, when he was in his prime, and a good introduction to his singing, including two roles in which he was without a peer: Andrea Chenier and Calaf in Turandot. You will never hear a more thrilling and heroic Improviso from Chenier than the one here. And if you're fond of Nessun dorma, this is one of the great ones.

There is no tenor singing today with a voice the equal of this one. Don't miss it.

This CD Features Many wonderful tenors. Unfortunately, the tenor singing the title aria "Nessun Dorma" is not really fit to sing such a demanding piece. If you are buying this CD for that aria, I recommend you look elsewhere, but if you like the other arias on this CD, it is a great buy!

5 out of 5 stars Beauty of the music..........2006-08-10

String quartet versions exelled such beautiful performance! After reviewing Tupac Shakur's original albums, I decided to check out the string quartet. To be honest, Tupac's work shows such strong, beautiful meanings of his life while the string version plays the beauty of many instruments dedicating to Tupac's work and his music. For those who love rap and a side of classical listening, this is one collection you can't pass up to!
