First there was Cesaria Evora, Then Lura, and now, the Portuguese/Cape Verdean singer/composer/guitarist Sara Tavares. The title of this CD (pronounced bal-on-SAY) refers to the equilibrium necessary for balancing her mixed, Crioulo culture that stretches from Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Blessed with an angelic voice, and a knack for writing accessible compositions that are global, yet ancestral, Tavares is closer to Les Nubians than to Evora, as the title track makes clear. She's more about adapting her homeland's musical conceptions to include Angolan sembe Afrobeats on "Poka Terra," with rapper Melo D, reggae, and Cape Verdean coladeira rhythms on "Planeta Sukri," co-starring vocalist Boy Ge Mendes. Fadista Ana Moura helps Tavares tell her soulful story on "De Nua." With this heartfelt, autobiographical work, Sara Tavares emerges as a new dark and lovely diva for this decade. --Eugene Holley, Jr.Customer Reviews:

The Barcelona-based nuevo-roots outfit is back with a third entertaining, anarchistic yet wildly danceable amalgam. The rousing guitar of Ramón Giménez and sinuous, Moorish-tinged vocals of Marina "la Canillas" Abad are wreathed in handclaps and percussion, plus scathing brass charts, remarkably creative scratching, beats and other electronic embellishments. There are also flurries of quotes from a far-flung array of traditions outside their own, such as reggae and rap, but the band's antic inclusiveness never derails their individuality or adulterates the heritages of their collaborators. After all, their hometown is one of Europe's great musical hotbeds, in which flamenco, rumba Catalana and other local styles are often fused with whatever is at hand or just arrived. Guest stars this time out include Faada Freddy from the Senegalese hip-hop collective Daara J, Indian fusioneers Prithpal Rajput and Nitin Sawhney, and Cuban pianist Roberto Carcàsses. From nearer home, Flamenco guitar legend Pepe Habichuela and Spanish singing star Martirio sit in, along with tres and guitar master Raúl Rodrígues of Son de la Frontera, another band with fervent global leanings, this time toward Cuba. The lush packaging includes a CD-ROM containing videos, lyric translations, works by fourteen illustrators and other extras. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

Some may complain that Ojos De Brujo is simply the latest group to pillage flamenco music, but they'd be missing the point. This Barcelona band grew up with the flamenco tradition while also devouring a steady diet of hip-hop, punk, funk, gypsy and Middle Eastern music, so the inclusion of rapping, turntables and funk grooves is a logical one for these upstarts. Marina "La Canillas" Abad doesn't have the range that a conservatory-trained singer might have, but she makes up for it with her vivid, socially conscious lyrics and staccato delivery, which can skitter into rapid-fire rapping that resonates surprisingly well with flamenco's chattering rhythms. Indeed, the group is unafraid to mix anything: "Naita" starts out as a traditional song before breaking into a techno finale. More graceful is the fusion on "Memorias Perdías," which meshes flamenco, gypsy and swing jazz. One of the most hotly anticipated releases of the spring, Bari has a punky spirit that will make it a pick on many year-end lists. --Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

Even if you're not well-versed in Portuguese fado music, it's easy to be swayed by its rich, mournful sense of emotion. Mariza, one of the genre's premiere contemporary vocalists, see fado as an international language. She makes a convincing case on Concerto em Lisboa, a live recording captured duirng her acclaimed performance at the Tower of Belem. It's an alternately elegant and electric showcase, highlighted by Mariza's gorgeous, piercing voice. She's backed by a full orchestra, whose timing and tightness only add to the experience. From the opening strains of "Loucura" through the closing "Ó Gente Da Minha Terra," Mariza is alternately somber and festive, creating a perfect synergy of singer and musicians. The disc's shattering standout track, "Menino Do Bairro Negro," is likely as gorgeous as anything you've heard in any language. --Joey GuerraAlbum Description
Mariza's brand new live CD recorded in front of 20,000+ people at the magnificent and picturesque gardens of Torre De Belem in her home town of Lisbon, Portugal. Recorded in 2005, with an orchestra (Sinfonetta de Lisbon) led by Jacques Morelenbaum, the beautiful fado singer transports the listener to a timeless evening in Lisbon. The special bonus DVD is a documentary called Mariza And The Story Of Fado, which examines the art of fado, its history and development through interviews with and performances by Mariza and other fadistas, musicians and experts. Filmed on location in Lisbon, the program contains archival footage of famous past singers, including the late acclaimed Amalia Rodrigues

Lovely Portuguese fados - nice CD + DVD set.......2007-04-07
The added bonus documentary film DVD is a real treat, not only for the glimpses of Mariza and other contemporary fado stars, but for its look back at the roots of the genre and its meaning to Portuguese society. Particularly interesting is its examination of fado's political and social significance -- originally the fado was type of left-wing protest song, but it was subverted in the 1930s by the dictatorship that ruled Portugal until the mid-1970s. The junta made fado music into a propaganda tool, emphasizing romantic love and family values, to the exclusion of older themes about hard work and hard times. After the dictatorship toppled, fado fell into disrepute, but regained popularity in the 1980s and '90s when a new generation cast about for a way to guard Portuguese culture from the encroachments of globalized (American) popular entertainment. A fascinating story, laced with many soulful performances.

If the legendary singer Amália Rodrigues is the queen of fado, the national song genre of Portugal, this debut by Mariza announces her coronation as its crown princess of the 21st century. This twentysomething, Mozambique-born beauty of Portuguese, Spanish, German, African, and Indian descent rapidly rose from the Mouraria district of Lisbon to become fado's newest and brightest star. The 12 selections on this recording are arranged in chamber-style ensembles consisting of bass, piano, classical guitar, and its 12-stringed, Portuguese cousin, the Portuguese viola. Songs like "O Gente Da Minha Terra" and the traditional "Por Ti" ring with a haunting feeling of saudade well beyond Mariza's years. "Maria Lisboa," "Ha Fest Na Mouraria" (with cellist Davide Zaccaria), and "Barco Negro" are peppered with Iberian and African-flavored percussion. Mariza sings these songs of love, God, and country with a youthful vitality that proves that fado is alive and well. --Eugene Holley Jr.Customer Reviews:

Amalia Rodrigues is the unchallenged queen of fado--the Portuguese equivalent of flamenco or blues--and one of the greatest singers on record. Her voice is rich and sinuous, with the soulful intensity of a Billie Holiday or Edith Piaf, but a warmth and sense of phrasing all her own. This retrospective ranges from her first recordings in 1952 up to 1970 and gives a superb picture of her work. The instrumentation is simple guitar and Portuguese mandolin, perfectly framing her aching laments and flowing melodies, like a gentler version of flamenco or a continental cousin of Cesaria Evora's morna. The songs include folk and popular material, but the emphasis is on the deep, passionate fado, and it doesn't get any better than this. --Elijah WaldCustomer Reviews:

Standing out amid a very strong crop of young new fado singers, Mozambique-born Mariza returns with Transparente, her third album. While her second, Fado Curvo, announced her as a great new voice on the scene, this one reaffirms that flowering promise while expanding the depth of her range. She gets help from great Brazilian cellist, arranger and producer Jacques Morelenbaum, who adds a lush orchestral backdrop to this folksy torch song form, extending the bittersweet melodies even though it does file away some of the edges. No matter, the singer's phrasing and timing are calibrated for drama, and her voice soars with happiness or quivers with passion. Highlights include a panoramic version of the fado traditional "O Silencio da Guitarra" and a small group rendering of "Recusa." Her moving away from the tradition may trouble purist, but this album endears itself easily if given a listen. -- Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

Seven years after their widely praised initial encounter, Dominican jazz pianist Michel Camilo, who cites Art Tatum and Keith Jarrett among his role models, and Spanish gypsy guitarist Tomatito, accompanist to the late vocal legend, Camarón de la Isla (the Jim Morrison of flamenco) are back with another stunning set. Although these two musicians emerged from very different backgrounds, there is nonetheless a certain commonality, the most obvious being that both jazz and flamenco are highly improvisational, demanding nearly supernatural levels of empathy between collaborating musicians. Although their debut concentrated primarily upon Spanish sources, they've now moved on to styles of lateral Iberian descent, notably the stylishly intellectual neo-tangos of Argentina's Astor Piazzolla, with a nod to his influential forebear, Carlos Gardel. Mr. Camilo's Juilliard training must have come in handy when essaying these works, as both composers were deeply familiar with European sources such as the works of French impressionists like Debussy, Ravel, and Fauré. The album also includes a gently reflective rendering of "Stella by Starlight," coming to a close with "Amor de Conuco," a romantically retro nuevo cancion-like ballad by Mr. Camilo's countryman, Juan Luis Guerra, with vocals by the composer. --Christina RodenAlbum Details

Many Good Reasons To Buy.......2006-12-06
It arrived from Argentina in about a week and I anticipated pure bliss while inserting it into the CD player. And mostly, I was not disappointed.
Here's what I like best:
1)Libertango-Camilo and Tomatito deliver just over four minutes of sonic wizardry. Libertango is one of the most internationally famous of Piazzolla compositions, and this rendition just dazzles.
2)Fuga Y Misterio-A very technically challenging Piazzolla piece. It always reminds me of something Frank Zappa might have written had he been Argentine. Camilo and Tomatito give an exquisite rendering.
3)Adios Nonino-Probably THE most covered Piazzolla piece and the most personally meaningful to El Troesma himself. I've heard many different interpretations of this, at least a dozen of them by Piazzolla himself. This rendition is starkly reminiscent of the rare version which features Piazzolla and guitarist Cacho Tirao.
4)Twilight Glow-An escape to serenity for when the lights are low. Think Al DiMeola in one of his acoustic moods.
5)A Los Nietos-Dedicated to Pat Metheny but again strongly suggestive of Al DiMeola. Excellent!
and,
6)La Fiesta-I first heard this Chick Corea composition on a Stan Getz album. I liked it then and I like even more the interpretation given here.
About the only cuts I didn't care for were the opening Gardel classic El Dia Que Me Quieras which I find too subdued, and the unappealing vocals featured on Amor de Conuco.
As you can see, there are many good reasons to buy this CD and no good reason not to. If you are here, you must have a passing interest in at least one of the featured musicians. And quite likely, you are either a jazz fan a la Corea or Di Meola, or you have come here for the Piazzolla tangos.
There are certainly a lot of reasons I like Spain Again, so it will be in heavy playing rotation for months to come. Check it out, you should not be disappointed!

Perhaps flamenco legend Enrique Morente was prescient when he named his daughter Estrella (star in Spanish), because that's precisely what this singer is destined to become judging by the strength of this phenomenal debut album. Originally released in Spain, My Songs and a Poem speaks directly to the heart of classic flamenco with a selection of tangos, bulerías, and other styles, with music written mostly by her father. Yet she is not merely aping Enrique; rather, she makes this material entirely her own. From the aching sweetness of "Moguer" to the fire of the opening song "Cockles," the younger Morente shows off her virtuosic dexterity, her voice's color shifting from one end of the emotional spectrum to the other. Her sound is rich and round, yet she maintains an exacting precision in her delivery. Her worthy collaborators include a notable roundup of uncles and cousins, including the Carmonas (who perform as Ketama, a flamenco-rock-jazz-world hybrid). Another guest is guitarist Alfredo Lagos, whose razor-sharp articulation is a delight. The sound of these recordings, made in a variety of studios across Spain and in live performances, is uniformly rich and clear. The most striking fact about this album, though, is that it's the work of a 20-year-old. Estrella Morente is a fully formed artist, technically and emotionally, who embodies the soulful spirit of cante jondo, or "deep song." In picking up this album for international sale, Real World proves that it's still on the cutting edge of bringing local talent to wider audiences. --Anastasia TsioulcasCustomer Reviews:

One of the great fado singers working today, Cristina Branco returns with Ulisses, a lush-sounding album that now more than ever separates her from fado convention. Rather than the typical guitar trio backing, Branco adds piano throughout to a guitar quartet that is, as always, led by Portuguese guitar player Custodio Castelo. Between Castelo's pyrotechnics and the piano adding a richer harmonic element, the elegant music sounds more appropriate for classical music recital halls than the fado clubs. Branco's voice smolders with nuance throughout, soaring but never overpowering the backing. A reference to the title, the material here sometimes comes from poems and tunes far beyond her homeland--Branco even offers English speakers a not-at-all-stiff version of Joni Mitchell's "A Case Of You." The electronic-oriented "Fundos" ends the album on an odd note but serves as an emphatic reminder that Cristina Branco is not content to sail exclusively in traditional Portuguese waters. -- Tad HendricksonAlbum Description

Sete pedaços de vento è the best song of fado I ever listen in my life
A special disc, pure enjoyment.......2006-09-25
This disc, above all others, clearly displays that she is a world class vocalist in any genre and language. Selections in her native tongue along with an unexpected Joni Mitchell as well as French lyrics puts this artist in the spotlight and center stage. The musical arrangements and recording quality adds to the enjoyment of this disc.
This is a must have for any Fado enthusiast and Cristina Branco fan.
Wonderful example of excellent world music.......2006-09-10
This new CD "Ulisses" is awesome, her best to date in my opinion. Comparing to previous Cristina's CDs this one is really a voyage (as the title suggests) including a wider range of musical styles, obviously influenced by other cultures, but always capturing the emotion and vision within a genuine fado singer. Obviously this CD is not for purists, and I'm glad I'not a purist. I'm particularly fond of the tune "Alfonsina y el mar" (sung in perfect castellano) which I know in other versions but none of them as good as this one. "Porque me olhas assim" a great Fausto tune, is another one of my favourites, with exquisite arrangement including the beautiful piano (Ricardo Dias) and portuguese guitar (Custodio Castelo). I presume the arrangements have been written by all musicians as that is not mentioned in the booklet (which is a pity and the only negative remark I make).
Cristina Branco is definitely a great world singer, included in a new generation of portuguese singers getting to be known abroad such as Dulce Pontes, Sara Tavares, Mariza, Ana Moura, Misia, Teresa Salgueiro (Madredeus) etc. I'm proud of them all, but Cristina is my first choice.
