By all indications, Ricky Martin's Unplugged opus should be an easy, effortless sell. The charismatic singer is in fine vocal form, backed by a tight band. He makes some interesting set list selections ("Gracias Por Pensar En Mi," "Asignatura Pendiente"). But Martin is also coming off 2005's commercially disappointing Life, which didn't even reach gold status (sales of 500,000 copies). That's a long way down from his Loca peak. It gives Unplugged, then, the whiff of an artist grasping for old glories. Martin was wise to include standouts "Perdido Sin Ti" and "Vuelve," which still shimmer with a lush pop sheen. Both are from 1998's Vuelve disc, still Martin's strongest effort to date. But new tracks "Con Tu Nombre," "Tu Recuerdo," and "Pegate" come off like unremarkable rehashes of past hits. Instead of looking back, this talented singer should be searching for real ways to reinvent his sound and to make his music exciting again. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Completely ANGELIC.......2007-06-17

If you thought you loved Ricky Martin you have NOT lived until you have heard this album. I love his music and I find it takes me back to Puerto Rico when I listen to him but this album not only takes me back there it TRANSPORTS me to the heart of Viejo San Juan. This album is "el mar que de podentro".

To hear a track like "Maria" knocked down about 25 notches from that crazy energetic totally loveable regular release and hear Ricky enjoying every sylable of the song is a JOY to my ears. I can hear in his voice that he is performing for the love of performing not for the want of fame or fortune. He is there because he wants to sing, hands down he loves what he does and well, he's one of the BEST at what he does! I also fell in love with "Perdido Sin Ti" on the "La Historia" album and it has a personal significance in my life but this live version is nothing short of an Angel sining to my heart.

He is performing on stage with Tommy Torres who has to be one of the quintesential Puerto Rican artists alive today and they are jamming. Anyone who understands what "Jam" means you will WANT to hear this album.

If you were hesitant to buy, hesitate NO more, RUN and buy this album I can guarantee that you will not be disapointed. If you are, well you aren't a true RMMII fan....

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous artistry.......2007-06-06

Ricky reveals incredible depth, sincerity, and artistry in this production. An unplugged should speak to the audience in an intimate manner and Ricky has definitely achieved a unique level of expressiveness that sips through every verse and every commentary from the artist. I am happy and proud to see Ricky shine brighter than ever both as an acclaimed artist, entertainer, and philanthropist.

5 out of 5 stars Fabuloso!.......2007-03-20

¡Esta canción es asombrosa! Gran trabajo Ricky.

I really love this song, and being in love with latin music, i thought this album was amazing. Ricky martin has done it again. Wow!

5 out of 5 stars amazing!.......2007-03-12

What an incredible CD from the ultimate performer. If you're a true Ricky fan, you should also purchase the accompanying DVD to this CD. He returns back to what he knows best....ENTERTAINING! I would definately recommend this CD to anyone that loves Latin pop!

GOZALO!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-09

This is a phenomenal cd that I truly enjoy listenig to. The acoustic format lends such a different dimension to his music and proves that good music does not need heavy and zealous production to be brilliant -- it shines on its own merit. He is in fine voice and I believe this cd emphasizes that Ricky is not a flash-in-the-pan product of music industry sharks out to capitalize on his good looks and charisma. With nothing to hide behind, an acoustic venue such as this shows an artist's true talent, for good or bad. Ricky's talent speaks for itself here and proves him to be the true musician and artist he has never received proper credit for.

The COMMENTS by E. Teran "boricua" are an EXAMPLE of a person who has "very little knowledge" about SALSA MUSIC. Anyone can put "BORICUA" as being the POSTER at AMAZON and claim to be an expert. Being a TRUE BORICUA and musician I am amazed how the Gran Combo can take the SALSA "Rhythm" and keep it FRESH on this album. You need to listen to the Instruments to understand the complexity of the arrangements. I understand that some would prefer to go back to the 30's and 40's as if a "renassiance" will occur in Salsa Music. This is SALSA in the purest form and by the "creators" of the music. Great CD. Beware of "Player Haters !". Salsa Creations POST .......

Just two words in order to describe the CD - "A must have"

4 out of 5 stars Salsa how it should be.......2007-03-01

I agree with the reviewer in saying that it's not EGC's best album. BUT... compare this album with all the other salsa garbage that has come out in the last few years. Sure there are some great tracks out there, but great albums??? Nope...

This is one of the only salsa albums to come out in the last few years worth paying for (which is why I am!).

You can only applaud people like EGC, Maelo Ruiz, Sonora Poncena, Roberto Roena, and even Victor Manuelle who's last albums have been quality affairs. Sure, not their best work (the exception being Manuelle) but better than the rest of the releases out there.

I miss the 70's, 80's, early 90's salsa as much as everyone else but those days are gone. I only give big claps to the people who are trying to keep quality salsa going.

BUY THE ALBUM!!!

5 out of 5 stars Buen Disco.......2007-02-21

Residente o Visitante arrives less than two years after Calle 13 busted out of reggaeton's oft-repetitive confines with its searing debut disc. But instead of playing it safe, the dynamic duo of Rene Perez and Eduardo Cabra fly further outside the safe zone. Residente o Visitante is dirtier and more diverse than its predecessor, typified by the jaw-dropping intro. It's a solemn chorus of voices simply repeating Spanish expletives. From there, the disc explores political struggle, carnal desire, and the trappings of fame--all anchored by Calle 13's razor-sharp sense of humor. Tango, lounge grooves, and cumbia rhythms collide with reggaeton in ways that shouldn't work, but do so wonderfully. The standout track "Mala Suerte Con el 13" is a dysfunctional duet with Mala Rodriguez that turns love-song cliches upside down--and slaps them on the behind. You'll need to take a shower after the first listen--and immediately put it on repeat. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Best release of the year...English or Spanish........2007-06-05

If they knew that the follow up album would be so good, they would've given them 5 Grammy awards. This is what music should be. Most people sell out with their second release but Calle 13 have evolved. They made something that was great, greater. With that I'll say that this is not reggaeton, this is music.

Visitante's beats are really something else, well executed and extremely original. You have to be dead, in order to keep still while listening. Residente's lyrics are brutally honest and funny, there's nothing that escapes his imagination, a total mushroom trip.

Standout songs, even though you won't skip any of them, are :
"La Era De la Copiaera" I don't know who his lashing out at but it's beautifully hilarious.
"Me Voy pal Norte" Featuring Orishas, a harmonious union, between the two best talents, in the spanish speaking, urban music scene right now. Socially Conscious once again.
"Cumbia de los Aburridos" and "Uiyi Guaye" these are simply funny and great to dance to.
Don't miss this album...it'll be like missing your birthday.

5 out of 5 stars Calle 13 is genius........2007-05-20

Calle 13's newest album, Residente o Visitante is a huge step since their first self titled album. A little more darker, it is much more lyrically and politically focused. With collaborations from many artists, Calle 13 continues to break the mold for latin artists. Some upbeat, Reggaeton songs, and some slower songs that don't fall into the reggaeton category. All in all, an amazing CD that will awe you with it's inspiring beats.

5 out of 5 stars Can u take some sarcasm? here u got it in a great urban, ghetto poetic way........2007-05-12

WOW!!!!! I do have to say it. Exelent CD, A latin urban CD like no other. Lyrics are amazing, so poatics, full of sarcasm. Its like little stories. Residente have a great power when he signs... It so poetic as it is vulgar. They have some social content too. Pal' Norte its a call for freedom, a story about mexican inmigrants... great piece. Music is orgasmic.

4 out of 5 stars A real different cd.......2007-05-04

This album is very different and great in beats but it's not as good as the first one. It doesnt have a real good reggaeton beat like Sandwich de Salchicha, Esto Va Suave or Atreve te te, (I dont know if those are the titles, but you get the idea). But overall is real good, cafre, sucio, mal hablao y malcriao but the lyrics are very original and different. You have to have a very open mind. But again he should have had more seductive reggaeton songs.

Why is it that island cultures so often create the most magical, deeply individual sounds? Is it because they are usually miles away from corrupting outside influences? Perhaps it is due to the fact that they are forced to create music from their own inner resources. The powerful voices of Jamaican reggae, Cuban rumba, and Puerto Rican salsa have been joined on the world stage by Cape Verdean morna and Hawaiian slack-key guitar, and the hits just keep on coming. The tunes on this set are not terribly revealing about their place of origin, but plenty of likable grooves turn up, primarily dance-oriented party fodder. It's like a casual tourist's piña colada-fueled vacation fantasy: a very pretty and colorful interlude that doesn't have much to do with real life in either place. It's perfect for lazy summer days and nights, ethnic banquets, and tropical-themed celebrations. --Christina Roden

4 out of 5 stars Contemporary Island Music.......2007-02-25

"Islands" is a compilation of contemporary music from tropical islands across the world. Artists from the Cape Verde Islands, Madagascar, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Martinique, Tortola, Hawaii and Tahiti are featured on this disc. The Cape Verdean blues singer, Maria Alice, is a real standout with her sad, haunting Falso Testemunho. Bobby & Angelo from Tahiti sing the beautiful, upbeat and distinctly Polynesian E Iti Taurua evoking memories of the cowboy melodies of the `50s. Hawaii's contribution is Hapa's Olinda Road, the disc's one instrumental selection. The selections from the Caribbean artists are all very good whether dance numbers or mournful love songs.

This very enjoyable album is both exotic and easy to listen to. It has introduced me to a number of talented artists whom I otherwise might have missed.

4 out of 5 stars Very good,not great,but still fun.......2006-06-16

"Danca ma mi Criola" is a bouncy love song."Me ki sa oule" is a lilting song of longing."Bomba traigo yo" is joyfully infectious. The BEST songs are "Falso Testemunho" from Cape Verde&"Veinte anos" from Cuba. Both these songs are about unrequited love&betrayal. For popular songs, they are moving."Sonegaly" is an enchanting song from Madagascar.Tarika hasn't been as good since."E I Taurua"&"Olinda Road" are magical songs from Tahiti&Hawaii.

D'Gary&Jihe from Madagascar as well as Quito Rymer from Tortola aren't quite so good.Interesting sidenote-Rymer's "Mix up world" is one of the themes for Putumayo's World Music Hour.Oh well.

This is still a good album."South Pacific Islands" is EVEN BETTER."Islands" has held up for a good 9 yrs since its release. No wonder it's still in print. How many pop albums last that long???

4 out of 5 stars One of the best in this series.......2005-09-24

My whole family loves this CD. My 2 year old daughter dances up a storm and my 4 year old son puts on his jolly roger do-rag and swashbuckles about. A little mellower and less adventurous, musically, than similar compilations, but the quality is higher throughout.

3 out of 5 stars Incomplete.......2005-07-28

Incomplete. What else can I say? This is a good mix, and a good cd, but the title is Islands. So, why not throw something a little more exotic into the mix? Cuba and Hawaii are predictable, but what about music from the Azores? What about the Madeira Islands? A little Luis Bettencourt, some Jose Medeiros, or Katia Guerreiro and this cd would have been a whole lot better!!!

5 out of 5 stars Islands--Go Ahead, Dance!.......2004-12-11

Flip this on and be instantly transported to an exotic tropical island-it costs a lot less than a plane ticket, and you don't have to buy one for each person you want to take with you.

Spend forty-five minutes in places like Hawaii, Madagascar, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Tahiti. Great stuff to dance to, just relax and feel it pulse through your veins. This music makes you feel awesome-makes you younger just listening to it.

Just imagine yourself relaxing on an island, no one but you and maybe your lover. You can dance in the sand, relax and listen to the ocean. Feel the culture in this wonderful music and let the sun warm your body. Nothing like it.

The music of Puerto Rican outfit Calle 13 simmers like so much sweat on the backs of b-boys and fly girls, twisting and turning its way through the cracks and crevices of modern urban music. Calle 13's dynamic duo--half-brothers Rene Perez and Eduardo Cabra--are smart, shocking, and silly. It's a thrilling combination that makes for some hip-swiveling, head-turning sounds. Standout tracks "La Hormiga Brava," "Vamo Animal," and the rocket-fueled single "Atrévete-te-te" careen between street sounds and lush Latin rhythms, anchored by the group's mischievous sense of humor. Reggaeton is the label that's been slapped on this inspired hybrid, but Calle 13 is light years beyond that often stifling genre (which explains recent collaborations with Nelly Furtado and Alejandro Sanz). Latin rap riffs, new-wave keyboards, and a sprinkling of pop smarts chart a musical path (and crash together during "Sin Coro") that Calle 13 will likely lead--and veer from--in the near future. --Joey Guerra

I know these two may seem like something new to alot of people, but having lived in Puerto Rico for more than half my life, calle 13 brought back the fondest memories.
Wit, humor, patriotism and provocative lyrics have made them my favorites and brought me back to the genre.

LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Rapping like Salvador Dali would paint..........2007-05-12

If you like excitement and a play with words, this is the CD to get. I wish I knew where this cat gets his ideas to put on paper; Rene (Residente, of Calle 13) manages to take you through a colorful, deliciously funky and fun description of life's journey in a very witty way...in your head, just replace images with his rapping and you'll instantly have your own original Salvador Dali painting...very creative! His partner (half brother), "Visitante" is a musical genius..added together, you've got a masterpiece. I'm looking forward to their next.

5 out of 5 stars New sounds and a different spin of latino flava'.......2007-05-11

I love this group and the "explicit lyrics" warning does NOT apply to all of the songs. I was very pleased with this CD and the artistic talents of this group.

4 out of 5 stars damn good cd.......2007-04-20

i hadn't even heard of "reggaeton" until my girl played this for me. reggaeton whatever though, this fool has flow. i caught spanish pretty quickly in school, but i can't begin to understand 98% of what he's saying at all. my girl is fluent in spanish, and she still has a hell of a time getting through the heavy puerto rican slang, but that's it... the complaining part of the review is over.

just listening to the sets of syllables that are tied together, along with great breath control, not to mention a pretty melodic voice for a rapper (without being annoying), it's obvious that he's got some talent on the mic. add to that the fact that every one of the beats are straight slappers, and you've got yourself one hell of an album to rock out to, at the house with some bottles, or smashing down some backroads. i'm a white guy into clever, witty and lyrically complex hip-hop, so i wonder how much more hate i could get for jumping on this "reggaeton" deal, but i would mos def (not the rapper) pump this at a club, house party or just smashing on the road.

bottom line, if his lyrics are actually as sick over the killer beats as they sound, you should add another star to this review.

the puffy skit is great too. stop the watered down pop-rap!

4 out of 5 stars Redefining the genre.......2007-05-26

Being sick of hear the same radio-friendly reggaeton I decided to try Tego after hearing some samples on iTunes. You cannot put this album in the same sack, this one is a awesome mix of latin music, salsa, reggae, hip-hop and rap.

Imaginative and well-thinked lyrics, nice flow and the risk to make different things make The Underdog/El subestimado a great album. The ony flaw is the lame collaboration with Yandel... I only pass this thing because he also make a song with salsa's "pharao" Oscar D'Leon, correcting his mistake. My final advice? Give this album a try!

Outstanding tracks: Slo mo', Payaso, Veo veo, Oh Dios.

3 out of 5 stars The last one was better but still worth 12 bucks!!!!.......2007-04-02

This was another good enough outing for Tego but he could do much better. The guy is too good to just have okay albums they should all be instant classics and this one just isn't his break out cd "El Abayarde" was testament to his nastiness on the Mic. The last Cd had its moments this one does to but they just aren't as bright.

4 out of 5 stars Modern without leting go tradition.......2007-01-10

Great reggeaton artist. With lots of caribbean flavor on his music. He doesnt forget about our origins, he fusions his music with african rithms.. very populars in the puertorrican community. Full of latin flavor. Even have one salsa song. Colaborates with Don Omar, Danny Fornaris, and other great reggeaton artist and compositors.

5 out of 5 stars La Escuela de La Salsaton .......2006-11-26

4 out of 5 stars Creative Latin Hip-Hop Mix.......2006-10-28

Good job Tego, now drop the lame a**, two-beat, one-dimensional reggaetón garbage and go with the latin hip-hop and salsa beats. Tego shines and shows his true colors when he rhymes over the smooth hip-hop tracks. His talent is wasted when he does reggaetón. If he goes hip on his next album, he'll definately make a name for himself here in the states and may even surpass Daddy Yankee -- who is all image and no talent.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Salsa.......2006-01-22

Just in case you don't know El Gran Combo is called the University of Salsa for a reason. If you never heard of El Gran Combo, then you have never danced to real Salsa. In their live anniversary CD you hear their old and new stuff but you can't tell which is which becuase it's all wonderful. They have lasted this long for a reason, you can sing with them, dance with them, and if you ever get a chance to see them live I implore you to go. You can hear the energy and the love they have for salsa in their live cd. I have played this CD to many and they always ask me who is this, and I just love introducing them for the first time, they all go back to buy 40 years of their Cds. I would recommend you do the same if you don't have a collection already. Actually I would recommend buying all of their anniversary CD's.

5 out of 5 stars Salsa con Reggaeton.......2007-03-27

If you love listening to salsa and if you are an avid salsa dancer, you must buy this CD. Andy Montanez combines his fantastic voice with funky grooves from some of the hottest Reggaeton artists in the industry. This is the perfect CD for choreography, dancing or just listening.

4 out of 5 stars Salsatón.......2007-03-08

Aunque no soy fan del reggaetón, me encanta Andy Montañez, y en este disco la mezcla de este género popular y la salsa sale bastante bien.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Album!.......2007-01-30

I was skeptical at first especially with the reggaeton witch i cannot stand pero it was SALSA FIRST REGGAETON SECOND the album was very much enjoyable and its still in my cd changer very fun album! OLD SCHOOL MEETS NEW SCHOOL! THIS ALBUM IS WORTH IT!

5 out of 5 stars Bien hecho.......2006-09-30

5 out of 5 stars Wow excellent.......2006-08-30

I loved the album.
This is good to dance and good to listen.
I recommend you to get it.

Ricky Martin's self-titled 1999 album made him an international crossover star, and it's been both a blessing and a curse ever since. The Puerto Rican heartthrob became the poster boy for the much-ballyhoed Latin-pop movement, and he paved the way for English-language albums from Paulina Rubio, Thalia and Shakira. At the same time, Martin's processed pop recordings quickly lost favor at radio, and he seemed destined to become a musical footnote. Life finds the charismatic singer exuding a newfound confidence and showcasing some much-needed musical diversity. Martin traveled to India to record the string arrangements for the album, and that influence is felt throughout the disc's 12 tracks. Middle Eastern accents embellish tracks "Til I Get To You" and "I Won't Desert You," and groovy first single "I Don't Care" adds guest vocals from Fat Joe and soulful songbird Amerie for some street cred. Vocally, Martin sounds better than ever; he pushes his modest voice past its normal limit to match the intensity of the music. And like any good pop icon looking to maximize airplay, Martin dabbles in reggaeton during "Drop it On Me" and the Luny Tunes Mix of "Que Mas Da (I Don't Care)." Life may be the sound of an artist still looking for his individual sound, but it's a pretty enjoyable ride nonetheless. --Joey Guerra

I own many of Ricky Martin's CD and I was a little disappointed in this one. Its not as up beat as what I expected.

5 out of 5 stars Smooookin.......2007-04-15

This CD is even Hotter than La Vida Loca. Ricky goes from Hottie to Lusty in this version. If hot is what you want then this is the Ricky CD you want. Saw him in Concert when the CD came out and ALL I can say is that he is so much more handsom in person than even his CD. UNBELIEVABLE! If you ever get a chance see him in concert. The music, the moves, the man! Take a bib.

3 out of 5 stars Did ANYone buy this?.......2006-11-18

I wasn't sure when the next time was going to be that we would hear from Ricky Martin. While his last English album, Sound Loaded, didn't see all that well, it still produced some good singles in "She Bangs" and "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely". After that he recorded a few Spanish albums, but he finally came back for another English album in the form of Life.

This is another one of those situations where I read the other reviews and now I'm questioning whether we all listened to the same album. I also understand why this album was repeatedly pushed back, after listening to "I Don't Care" (which WAS a hit single -- for about a week). I won't touch the easy joke in that song's title; instead, I'll say that I think the only reason that song was a hit is because of the Scott Storch beat. Amerie adds nothing to the song, and Fat Joe makes things confusing: Ricky is talking about wanting to stay with the girl even though she cheated on him, while Joey Crack wants to kick the girl out for cheating. Which one is it?

Weak attempts to attract the hip-hop crowd don't stop there, as shown by the will.i.am-produced "Drop It On Me". The song features Daddy Yankee and Taboo, and just like on BEP albums, you can't even tell Taboo is there. "Till I Get to You" has some overdone symphonic production, and the necessary Diane Warren song "Stop Time Tonight" is just okay; a better slow song is "Save the Dance".

There are also a few songs with contradictory titles: "This Is Good" and "It's Alright". The album also concludes with obligatory Spanish versions of earlier tracks ("I Don't Care" and "It's Alright"). Basically, I really had no idea what to rate this album after listening to it; even three stars is probably being nice. People say one should get a life, but this ain't the kind of life to get.

1 out of 5 stars this bloke is overrated.......2006-09-09

he was cool in 1999, even his second english album had some decent tracks but that was his creative peak. One would think that after travelling around the world including places like india, ricky would have drawn a lot of inspiration for his music. He tried but he failed. This music just isn't good. I gave this album a second chance recently and it still sounds horrible! He can't decide whether he wants to be hip hop or bollywood or what. He should just stick to what he does best with his latin-fused pop/rock sound instead of trying too hard to appear as a serious, credible artist.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Album.......2006-07-03

I love Ricky and I think he is great at what he does. However, this album did not meet my expectations at all. I only like 1 or 2 songs. I think Ricky could have done way better. If i could return my cd and get my money back I would. There go 15 bucks I'll never see again.

Listening to this Gottschalk CD hs been a truly rewarding experience. We listen to it everyday, so I'm sure we will be purchasing more of his music.

5 out of 5 stars A very powerful performance.......2006-12-15

June 7, 2003
This is a very powerful performance by Licad, the first in a long
while. I had a chance to compare her recording with an earlier
recording of Gottschalk's piano works by another (relatively unknown)
pianist, and I must say that the latter recording pales miserably
in comparison to Licad's. Listening to Licad play in this recording,
I can't help but be reminded of Vladimir Horowitz's piano performances
during his heyday. Licad and Horowitz have very similar touch, intensity,
technical prowess and dynamic range. There are 16 piano works works in
this recording, and I must say that all are top caliber performances,
with the possible exception of track #9, Souvenirs de Porto Rico,
Marche de Gibaros, Op.31, where Licad seems to have missed a few
notes and desynchronized the rhythm in a few places. My favorites
are tracks #5 (Tremolo, Grande Etude de Concert), #7 (Manchega,
Etude de Concert), and track #14 (Tournament Galop); in the last
one, you can almost see and hear the horses galloping around the
race track. With the price ... this recording is a genuine steal.
However, I am still waiting to hear Licad play a Liszt, Brahms,
Prokofoiev or Bartok, where I believe we can really hear Horowitz
come alive.

3 out of 5 stars Shock treatment.......2005-04-11

There are plenty of other pianists who have played Gottschalk's music. These include Eugene List, Alan Mandel, John Arpin, Alan Marks, Philip Martin, and my favorite, Michael Lewin.

This disc has a very good selection of Gottschalk's music. Still, I do not always like Licad's interpretations of his works. Nor is her playing especially clean.

Le banjo, an excellent piece, is played too fast. Give this lady a speeding ticket! Bamboula is played unusually slowly, and there are even a couple of presumably intentional minor errors in rhythm in it. I think it is okay to play parts of it slowly, as Licad did, for dramatic effect, but I am not overly impressed by her performance of it.

When we reach another fine piece, La Savane, the intentional errors in rhythm get worse. I have never heard La Savane played like this before, and I don't like it.

Next is Tremolo. I think Licad does a fine job on this one, both technically and interpretively. And I also like her interpretations of Manchega and The Dying Poet.

Souvenir de Porto Rico is perhaps Gottschalk's best work, and it is technically very difficult. This would have been a great opportunity for Licad to show that she can handle the task. But she chose to do otherwise. It is disappointing.

Most of this disc is simply not Gottschalk as it ought to be played. If someone unfamiliar with Gottschalk wanted to listen to a CD with some of Gottschalk's best works on it, I'd normally recommend one with this set of pieces. But I certainly wouldn't recommend this. I'll give it two stars just for Tremolo, and one more for shock value.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't quite make it.......2003-11-11

Cecile Licad is a fine pianist, but she's not right for this. Maybe she's trying to put too much "Artistry" into these instead of virtuosic fire, although perversely she plays some pieces too fast. This is still quite nice, considering the low price, but don't throw away your old Leonard Pennario LP's.

5 out of 5 stars An exuberant blazing Gottchalk interpretation.......2003-09-19

Ms. Licad's Gottchalk interpretations on her latest CD is a pioneering effort in presenting the essential Gottchalk. She could have opted for the "safe and traditional " molded from other previous interpretations. But on this CD, she has opened a whole new world about the possibilities of Gottchalk's music who typifies the wondrous cultural influences here in the United States. Her performance is riveting, exuberant, blazing, virtuosic and always with a keen individual musicality that manages to always pay homage to what is essentially Gottchalk's. That is a feat in itself. I highly recommend this CD which should be CD of the Year.
