By all indications, Ricky Martin's Unplugged opus should be an easy, effortless sell. The charismatic singer is in fine vocal form, backed by a tight band. He makes some interesting set list selections ("Gracias Por Pensar En Mi," "Asignatura Pendiente"). But Martin is also coming off 2005's commercially disappointing Life, which didn't even reach gold status (sales of 500,000 copies). That's a long way down from his Loca peak. It gives Unplugged, then, the whiff of an artist grasping for old glories. Martin was wise to include standouts "Perdido Sin Ti" and "Vuelve," which still shimmer with a lush pop sheen. Both are from 1998's Vuelve disc, still Martin's strongest effort to date. But new tracks "Con Tu Nombre," "Tu Recuerdo," and "Pegate" come off like unremarkable rehashes of past hits. Instead of looking back, this talented singer should be searching for real ways to reinvent his sound and to make his music exciting again. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:
Completely ANGELIC.......2007-06-17
To hear a track like "Maria" knocked down about 25 notches from that crazy energetic totally loveable regular release and hear Ricky enjoying every sylable of the song is a JOY to my ears. I can hear in his voice that he is performing for the love of performing not for the want of fame or fortune. He is there because he wants to sing, hands down he loves what he does and well, he's one of the BEST at what he does! I also fell in love with "Perdido Sin Ti" on the "La Historia" album and it has a personal significance in my life but this live version is nothing short of an Angel sining to my heart.
He is performing on stage with Tommy Torres who has to be one of the quintesential Puerto Rican artists alive today and they are jamming. Anyone who understands what "Jam" means you will WANT to hear this album.
If you were hesitant to buy, hesitate NO more, RUN and buy this album I can guarantee that you will not be disapointed. If you are, well you aren't a true RMMII fan....

This is one of the only salsa albums to come out in the last few years worth paying for (which is why I am!).
You can only applaud people like EGC, Maelo Ruiz, Sonora Poncena, Roberto Roena, and even Victor Manuelle who's last albums have been quality affairs. Sure, not their best work (the exception being Manuelle) but better than the rest of the releases out there.
I miss the 70's, 80's, early 90's salsa as much as everyone else but those days are gone. I only give big claps to the people who are trying to keep quality salsa going.

Residente o Visitante arrives less than two years after Calle 13 busted out of reggaeton's oft-repetitive confines with its searing debut disc. But instead of playing it safe, the dynamic duo of Rene Perez and Eduardo Cabra fly further outside the safe zone. Residente o Visitante is dirtier and more diverse than its predecessor, typified by the jaw-dropping intro. It's a solemn chorus of voices simply repeating Spanish expletives. From there, the disc explores political struggle, carnal desire, and the trappings of fame--all anchored by Calle 13's razor-sharp sense of humor. Tango, lounge grooves, and cumbia rhythms collide with reggaeton in ways that shouldn't work, but do so wonderfully. The standout track "Mala Suerte Con el 13" is a dysfunctional duet with Mala Rodriguez that turns love-song cliches upside down--and slaps them on the behind. You'll need to take a shower after the first listen--and immediately put it on repeat. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

Best release of the year...English or Spanish........2007-06-05
Visitante's beats are really something else, well executed and extremely original. You have to be dead, in order to keep still while listening. Residente's lyrics are brutally honest and funny, there's nothing that escapes his imagination, a total mushroom trip.
Standout songs, even though you won't skip any of them, are :
"La Era De la Copiaera" I don't know who his lashing out at but it's beautifully hilarious.
"Me Voy pal Norte" Featuring Orishas, a harmonious union, between the two best talents, in the spanish speaking, urban music scene right now. Socially Conscious once again.
"Cumbia de los Aburridos" and "Uiyi Guaye" these are simply funny and great to dance to.
Don't miss this album...it'll be like missing your birthday.

Why is it that island cultures so often create the most magical, deeply individual sounds? Is it because they are usually miles away from corrupting outside influences? Perhaps it is due to the fact that they are forced to create music from their own inner resources. The powerful voices of Jamaican reggae, Cuban rumba, and Puerto Rican salsa have been joined on the world stage by Cape Verdean morna and Hawaiian slack-key guitar, and the hits just keep on coming. The tunes on this set are not terribly revealing about their place of origin, but plenty of likable grooves turn up, primarily dance-oriented party fodder. It's like a casual tourist's piña colada-fueled vacation fantasy: a very pretty and colorful interlude that doesn't have much to do with real life in either place. It's perfect for lazy summer days and nights, ethnic banquets, and tropical-themed celebrations. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:

The music of Puerto Rican outfit Calle 13 simmers like so much sweat on the backs of b-boys and fly girls, twisting and turning its way through the cracks and crevices of modern urban music. Calle 13's dynamic duo--half-brothers Rene Perez and Eduardo Cabra--are smart, shocking, and silly. It's a thrilling combination that makes for some hip-swiveling, head-turning sounds. Standout tracks "La Hormiga Brava," "Vamo Animal," and the rocket-fueled single "Atrévete-te-te" careen between street sounds and lush Latin rhythms, anchored by the group's mischievous sense of humor. Reggaeton is the label that's been slapped on this inspired hybrid, but Calle 13 is light years beyond that often stifling genre (which explains recent collaborations with Nelly Furtado and Alejandro Sanz). Latin rap riffs, new-wave keyboards, and a sprinkling of pop smarts chart a musical path (and crash together during "Sin Coro") that Calle 13 will likely lead--and veer from--in the near future. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

just listening to the sets of syllables that are tied together, along with great breath control, not to mention a pretty melodic voice for a rapper (without being annoying), it's obvious that he's got some talent on the mic. add to that the fact that every one of the beats are straight slappers, and you've got yourself one hell of an album to rock out to, at the house with some bottles, or smashing down some backroads. i'm a white guy into clever, witty and lyrically complex hip-hop, so i wonder how much more hate i could get for jumping on this "reggaeton" deal, but i would mos def (not the rapper) pump this at a club, house party or just smashing on the road.
bottom line, if his lyrics are actually as sick over the killer beats as they sound, you should add another star to this review.
the puffy skit is great too. stop the watered down pop-rap!

Imaginative and well-thinked lyrics, nice flow and the risk to make different things make The Underdog/El subestimado a great album. The ony flaw is the lame collaboration with Yandel... I only pass this thing because he also make a song with salsa's "pharao" Oscar D'Leon, correcting his mistake. My final advice? Give this album a try!

Ricky Martin's self-titled 1999 album made him an international crossover star, and it's been both a blessing and a curse ever since. The Puerto Rican heartthrob became the poster boy for the much-ballyhoed Latin-pop movement, and he paved the way for English-language albums from Paulina Rubio, Thalia and Shakira. At the same time, Martin's processed pop recordings quickly lost favor at radio, and he seemed destined to become a musical footnote. Life finds the charismatic singer exuding a newfound confidence and showcasing some much-needed musical diversity. Martin traveled to India to record the string arrangements for the album, and that influence is felt throughout the disc's 12 tracks. Middle Eastern accents embellish tracks "Til I Get To You" and "I Won't Desert You," and groovy first single "I Don't Care" adds guest vocals from Fat Joe and soulful songbird Amerie for some street cred. Vocally, Martin sounds better than ever; he pushes his modest voice past its normal limit to match the intensity of the music. And like any good pop icon looking to maximize airplay, Martin dabbles in reggaeton during "Drop it On Me" and the Luny Tunes Mix of "Que Mas Da (I Don't Care)." Life may be the sound of an artist still looking for his individual sound, but it's a pretty enjoyable ride nonetheless. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:

Did ANYone buy this?.......2006-11-18
This is another one of those situations where I read the other reviews and now I'm questioning whether we all listened to the same album. I also understand why this album was repeatedly pushed back, after listening to "I Don't Care" (which WAS a hit single -- for about a week). I won't touch the easy joke in that song's title; instead, I'll say that I think the only reason that song was a hit is because of the Scott Storch beat. Amerie adds nothing to the song, and Fat Joe makes things confusing: Ricky is talking about wanting to stay with the girl even though she cheated on him, while Joey Crack wants to kick the girl out for cheating. Which one is it?
Weak attempts to attract the hip-hop crowd don't stop there, as shown by the will.i.am-produced "Drop It On Me". The song features Daddy Yankee and Taboo, and just like on BEP albums, you can't even tell Taboo is there. "Till I Get to You" has some overdone symphonic production, and the necessary Diane Warren song "Stop Time Tonight" is just okay; a better slow song is "Save the Dance".
There are also a few songs with contradictory titles: "This Is Good" and "It's Alright". The album also concludes with obligatory Spanish versions of earlier tracks ("I Don't Care" and "It's Alright"). Basically, I really had no idea what to rate this album after listening to it; even three stars is probably being nice. People say one should get a life, but this ain't the kind of life to get.

Beautiful, beautiful music!.......2007-07-07
A very powerful performance.......2006-12-15
This is a very powerful performance by Licad, the first in a long
while. I had a chance to compare her recording with an earlier
recording of Gottschalk's piano works by another (relatively unknown)
pianist, and I must say that the latter recording pales miserably
in comparison to Licad's. Listening to Licad play in this recording,
I can't help but be reminded of Vladimir Horowitz's piano performances
during his heyday. Licad and Horowitz have very similar touch, intensity,
technical prowess and dynamic range. There are 16 piano works works in
this recording, and I must say that all are top caliber performances,
with the possible exception of track #9, Souvenirs de Porto Rico,
Marche de Gibaros, Op.31, where Licad seems to have missed a few
notes and desynchronized the rhythm in a few places. My favorites
are tracks #5 (Tremolo, Grande Etude de Concert), #7 (Manchega,
Etude de Concert), and track #14 (Tournament Galop); in the last
one, you can almost see and hear the horses galloping around the
race track. With the price ... this recording is a genuine steal.
However, I am still waiting to hear Licad play a Liszt, Brahms,
Prokofoiev or Bartok, where I believe we can really hear Horowitz
come alive.
Shock treatment.......2005-04-11
This disc has a very good selection of Gottschalk's music. Still, I do not always like Licad's interpretations of his works. Nor is her playing especially clean.
Le banjo, an excellent piece, is played too fast. Give this lady a speeding ticket! Bamboula is played unusually slowly, and there are even a couple of presumably intentional minor errors in rhythm in it. I think it is okay to play parts of it slowly, as Licad did, for dramatic effect, but I am not overly impressed by her performance of it.
When we reach another fine piece, La Savane, the intentional errors in rhythm get worse. I have never heard La Savane played like this before, and I don't like it.
Next is Tremolo. I think Licad does a fine job on this one, both technically and interpretively. And I also like her interpretations of Manchega and The Dying Poet.
Souvenir de Porto Rico is perhaps Gottschalk's best work, and it is technically very difficult. This would have been a great opportunity for Licad to show that she can handle the task. But she chose to do otherwise. It is disappointing.
Most of this disc is simply not Gottschalk as it ought to be played. If someone unfamiliar with Gottschalk wanted to listen to a CD with some of Gottschalk's best works on it, I'd normally recommend one with this set of pieces. But I certainly wouldn't recommend this. I'll give it two stars just for Tremolo, and one more for shock value.
