5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Who CD.......2004-03-24

For anyone who appriciates good quality music - this album is ideal. For Who fans it's perfect. Ive heard critisms that without Moon, the who have lost it - absolute nonsence if you ask me. Zak Starkey who has been drumming for the who sice '94 is bloody amazing! The ONLY person worthy of moon's stool! Townsend, although old now, is still fantastic, strumming riffs and really pelting his guitar. Daltry has been on better form but he can still pull it off. As for Entwistle, only one word - Amazing ( his solo in 5:15 prooves this. The show as a whole is excellent with an overal performance that seriously rocks. It just highlights that after so long together, The Who are still the best band ever! Both the DVD and CD are worth buying.
The ultimate of all CD's/DVD's.

5 out of 5 stars The original recording was good but this is astounding !!!!.......2004-02-21

Having purchased the original Steamhammer recording when it was first released, I didn't think that anything could top the quality of the original disc, live recordings being what they can be. Often times the sound is muddy or unbalanced or the crowd noise is beefed way too high in the mix. Well, believe me when I tell you that the SACD Hybrid Multi-Channel version completely blows it away. Everything is pristeenly clean and clear with no break ups at any level that I played it at! Pete's guitar (power chords and all) were clear and (unwanted) distortion-free. John's bass was thunderous yet very clear and solid and Zak's drums and cymbals were perfect yet none of the aforementioned instuments got in the way of Roger's vocals. Personally, I wish more cd's were available in this format as it buries the sound quality of a standard cd. If only the prices of SACD discs were more reasonable. Aside from that shortcoming, I recommend this disc wholeheartedly.

3 out of 5 stars This is only for Head East fans.......2006-12-29

If you do not know who Head East was, then do not bother with this (that was kind of a starnge statement since only a Head East fans would be here right now). If you are a fan, then this is a good cd.

This must have been taken from the double live lp from the 70's. That was a much appreciated live album in the midwest region of the U.S. Where I am from (Chicago), "Since You've been gone" received a decent amount of airplay.

For the Head East fan, you have all of the cream off of "Flat as a Pancake". I know that this cd does not have the whole double live songs, but when you think of it...who cares! There is not a big catalog and market for Head East so be lucky with what you got!

The quality of the recording is good enough, the best songs are here, the band is powerful and rambunctious and you can relive your youth listening to Head East. In fact, the shorter album is more indicative as to how most people were exposed to them...they were always a warm up band for somebody else. Most people (unless your from St. Louis, their hometown,) got turned onto this band when they were warming up for someone else.

This is a fun, driving, typical 70's live album on par with live REO, Foghat or Grand Funk. This band does the live thing better than many of the posers from today.

Go ahead (your probably in your 40's and from the midwest) invest the big $5.00 that you can acquire this cd for and make the purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Why We Are Only Getting Half an Album.......2006-05-20

I am a modest Head East fan. I only own the Flat As A Pancake cd and the Millenium series disc. I'm writing this review because I find all the comments about this Live disc amusing. "Why only half an album?" "What's with the wrong sequencing of songs?" "Legal issues?"!

For one thing, this kind of stuff has nothing to do with The Band. So don't get mad at them or accuse them of being greedy (like alot of Kansas fans think). This has everything to do with the record company, A&M Records, simply doing a quick money-grab for your (the fans) wallet. They know people have been wanting this 1979 Live set to be released on cd for years. So, what do they do? Release an edited version of poor quality that was obviuosly "thrown together" on one disc at a low price to entice people to purchase it.

Some people probably thought it was the complete show until they played it and began to wonder "What happened to the rest of the show?"

This reminds me of Tesla's Live cd. There are none other than four different versions: the complete 20 song, 2-disc version on Sanctuary Records; two "Extended Versions" on one disc (10 songs) on "Collectables" and BMG Special Products; and another called Standing Room Only containing 13 tracks.

The record companies justify the single disc versions as a "lower-priced" alternative to reach younger fans. At least there are all these choices. A&M Records chose to offer up only one choice until nobody is purchasing that version anymore, and then they will release a complete version and take even more of your money at a later date. Just stand by and watch.

I'm going to wait.

4 out of 5 stars Good for half an album.......2005-11-26

The music is great for just being half an albums worth from the original. Still it is Head East! If someone ever brings out a better live recording from their hayday, I will certainly buy it cause I love Head East. Saw them in K.C. 1976, and they were so good. They opened for KISS and I couldnt tell ya who I enjoyed more, they were both DAMNED good

3 out of 5 stars Half of the original Live album but still it's good........2005-10-29

I heard the original Live on vinyl and recorded it to cassette tap in the early 80's. I think the other reviewers are a little to harsh on the sound quality as I was impressed with the CD tracks which for me beat the original vinyl recording.

Ditto on the comments about messing with the order of the songs. It takes from the energy of the performance. I found myself editing "Since You Been Gone" / "It's For You" / "Never Been Any Reason" back into the proper order they were recorded in sequence during one show on the "Live" album. It's a great set. I did a better job recombining them than they did cutting and pasting apart.

"Take a Hand" by Rick Springfield and "Its for You" by Lennon / McCartney won't be found on any studio album. They are both great tracks.

I'd give it 4 stars (almost 5) if they gave us all of the original tracks.

4 out of 5 stars When cars only have a radio and CD player........2004-02-22

Live music never had great sound quality. Live music is great because of the audience participation that deminishes sound quality in the first place. If you are a fan of a band and you love listening to live music (via a CD) blasting on your minivan CD player (compared to the junk that's blasted today from cars) as you sit in traffic, then buy the CD. It's great to listen to great music from the 70's and this CD is no exception. Buy it and enjoy it for what it's worth. We didn't have digital music in the 70's so the lack of perfect sound quality never existed back then. It's only a few bucks!! Buy it and ENJOY!! I love it.

Consisting of one disc recorded from a Boston radio broadcast in 1979 and the other from a large concert hall in Atlanta in 1983, Live! demonstrates the evolution of the Police's sound while showing off their ability to perform onstage. Aside from the track listings (although several of the same tracks are found on both discs), there are notable differences between the two concerts. The production is the most obvious. The 1979 recording, sounding raw like a well-done bootleg, is mixed for a punk band, which the Police largely were at the time. The Atlanta recording is slick and professional, perfect for the world-famous pop stars they had become. The second major difference is the performances themselves. In the Boston concert, because they had less material to fill an entire show, the band extended the songs by improvising on themes and progressions (while at the same time frequently lead-footing the tempos). In contrast, the Atlanta show featured a denser mix. Three backup singers doubled the number of people onstage, while the songs were moody and atmospheric. Again the band expanded on its arrangements. You won't hear your favorite licks from many of these songs, but the fair exchange is getting to hear drummer Stewart Copeland's inspired improvised fills; Andy Summers's cautious, delicate guitar textures; and Sting's rasta chants. Aside from being a transcendent live album, this collection makes it very clear that the Police were so much more than just Sting and "two other guys." Quite the opposite is true. It testifies not only to the strength of the songwriting but, more important, to the band's musicianship. The Police were a perfect musical trinity, each member an indispensable and inseparable part of the whole. --Beth Massa

This CD was received as described and is a very good deal for the price. Seller was prompt in shipment.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting and, for one disc at least, a great recording.......2007-03-14

It had been discussed for years, and in 1995 (apparently after the success of the rare live recordings found on the 4-disc boxset "Message in a Box: The Complete Recordings") a live album by The Police was released. The album, produced by Andy Summers, is a two-disc set - a very wise move, considering how vastly different the two CDs sound. Disc one is a 1979 performance in Boston that was broadcast over the radio; disc two is a 1983 performance in Atlanta during the "Synchronicity" tour.

It is the concensus of both the fans and the critics that the reason to purchase this set is for the first disc, recorded around the release of "Reggatta de Blanc". I completely disagree. To me, disc one, though more ferocious than disc two, sounds almost off-puttingly pretentious (albeit good-naturedly so). Sting seems to be trying almost too hard, and his ego is put on display more than a few times (in the opening of "Walking on the Moon", he announces, "This is from MY new record."). Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers' performances are quite lacking, and all in all the first disc comes across as being very dull, with the exception of a stellar version of "The Bed's Too Big Without You".

Disc two is my favorite, and definitely the highlight of the album. It was recorded during the peak of the band's popularity, and the material they had to work with was of much greater quality than that which they play on disc one (although many of the songs are repeated). Also, there's something exhilarating about hearing the huge crowd all-out roar during the performances. There are excellent performances of a number of songs, like the fast-paced, energetic opener, "Synchronicity I"; the dreamy bounce of "Tea in the Sahara"; the nasty-sounding and powerful "Don't Stand So Close to Me"; and high-voltage performances of "Can't Stand Losing You" and "So Lonely", both of which have some simply exemplary instrumental sections. "Can't Stand Losing You"'s is especially interesting. Prior to the release of "Reggatta de Blanc", the band would burst into a rolling chant during the middle of "Can't Stand Losing You" whenever it was performed live. That section was removed verbatim and recorded as the title track for "Reggatta de Blanc".

Disc two is the exact opposite of disc one. Sting is fine and well aware of the immense power he has over the audience, but his heart is definitely not in his singing, and at times his voice sounds hoarse from a little too much use. On the other hand, Summers and Copeland are just fantastic. Summers' playing is gorgeous and fluctuates between being fierce and being ethereal and moody; Copeland's is fast-paced, tough, and exotic. Still, as others have pointed out, the second disc has its flaws. Chief amongst those are the annoying and completely unnecessary backup singers, who I believe returned for Sting's first solo live recording, 1986's delightful "Bring on the Night". Here, however, they seem to be simply a product of Sting's laziness.

All in all, how much one enjoys "Live!" will depend on whether you're more a fan of the band's more fast-paced, punky material (their earlier work) or their more brilliant, ethereal and new wave stuff (their later work). I am more a fan of the latter, which is perhaps why I loved disc two, but doubt that disc one will ever get much play from myself. I would say that for the Police fan this set is definitely worth purchasing (and by all means, purchase the remastered version; the remastering job is utterly superb), but for anyone else I would highly recommend purchasing their studio albums first.

4 out of 5 stars Police - 'Live' (A&M) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-06-17

Apparently, there must be simply SO many 'new' releases put out at any given time, one obviously cannot keep track of EVERY one.As a result,I've only recently become aware of this live Police archive 2-CD title.Sound quality here could be a bit better, but it'll do.Disc one is from a 1979 live radio broadcast direct from the Orpheum Theater in Boston.I remember hearing this on a special late night radio show, don't believe that I taped it,or other wise,I wouldn't be so thrilled to finally land a copy of this disc.Better tunes are "So Lonely",the well written "Walking On The Moon","Message In A Bottle",their very first smash hit "Roxanne","Can't Stand Losing You" and "Born In The 50's".Disc two comes from a major gig in Atlanta in 1983 off their 'Synchronicity' tour. Most memorable cuts here are the awesome "Synchronicity II","De Do Do Do,De Da Da Da","Wrapped Around Your Finger",Sting's signature song "King Of Pain","Don't Stand So Close To Me" and "Every Breath You Take".A must-have for most Police fans.I was fortunate enough to catch The Police on the second leg of their 'Synchronicity' tour,as I never thought it would be their last.I've spoken with a couple of HUGE old school Police fans and they tell me they want NOTHING to do with this 2-CD release, that they're simply tired of seeing Sting out on solo tours and they feel somewhat betrayed that The Police will likely never reunite.Have to wonder how many others feel the same way.

4 out of 5 stars A truly great band.......2006-02-10

I had the pleasure of seing the Police live four times, each time while they were touring a new album. The shows were incredible, mainly because Sting and the boys were born performers. They really thrived when in front of an audience, more so than when they were in the studio. Personally, I think they reached their peak when touring Zenyatta Mondatta. They had mastered their ska-rock style to perfection. Even though you knew "So Lonely" and "Can't Stand Losing You" were coming up, they were always fresh and different. These CDs give you early Police, touring the first two albums and pre-breakup Police touring their last album. I would be lying if I said they were equal CDs. The first CD is better, much more pure and honest. I am not going to blast the Police for selling out, even though they kind of did. However, the Atlanta concert was jammed full with bandwagon fans that owned exactly one Police album, Synchronicity. Sting tries to draw the loyal crowd responses that he was used to getting from core fans, but they were not there. The boys still put in a good show, but not as good as the Boston gig. To be honest, if you want to hear the greatest recorded Police concert, it was one done in Melbourne Australia in 1981 and recorded by an Aussie station. To this day it is one of the greatest concerts I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Stellar!.......2006-07-25

Taken as a whole and not stripped down track by track, this is truly (as per the introduction) a musical moment! And what a moment it is. Stepping in for Larry Carlton we have the new pretender to the session crown Steve Lukather, young and raw. On drums we have the new Bonham, Jeff Porcaro, displaying his peerless skills. They come, they see and they conquer. The stamina of these musicians is legendary. They don't let up for a moment. Listening to the cramp inducing drum workout makes you wince. Hearing Lukather wind his fingers up and crank out speed licks is truly heart stopping. You can see why these musicians took LA by storm and the genesis of many Club, Studio and Stadium dates had it's beginning in places like this. Pure musical alchemy where the dross is burned out in the fearsome cauldron and heat of Live performance. These musicians were on the cusp of greatness. Lukather lays down his trademark sound and tone which would be refined over the next year, during which he would pull off his greatest sessions for Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Randy Crawford etc...Likewise for Jeff who used these gigs to hone and practice his evolving mastery of the drums. A pity David Paich was not sitting in the keyboard seat on this evening. These 3 musicians would soon strike paydirt at the grammies and help to shape the sound of popular music for years to come. The real godfathers of music bar none. A holy musical trinity for musicians to admire, setting standards which have never been surpassed. With this recording you are holding in your hands a moment in time and a piece of musical history. Kudos to Matheison and Pops for attempting to keep up with them.

5 out of 5 stars Best fusion album ever!.......2002-08-05

I heard this album when it first came out in '82. Twenty years later, it still captures the essense of what fusion could have (and should have) been. Like most fusion albums, this one is chock-full of tight, flashy performances. Unlike most fusion albums, however, this one delivers strong and memorable melodies. Not once is the musical statement sacrificed to the gods of flash. No exssesive soloing. No exssesive anything. I wish I had been there in person for this show. Whoever reissued this did the music world a HUGE favor...

5 out of 5 stars Superior Live.......2001-06-08

When i first listened to this album back in the eighties, i was stunned. How could a bunch of musicans create music with so much energy ? This is a liverecording from LA with two Toto-members, namely Steve Lukather and the late Jeff Porcaro, alongside with Greg Matieson and Pops Popwell (whoever he is). Lukather frenetic guitarrwork has never been better. So, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride...

3 out of 5 stars Just what you would expect from GRP.......2005-06-03

SLIGHTLY DECEPTIVE COVER: CHICK COREA DOES NOT PLAY ON WITH THE ALLSTAR BAND. THE FIRST CD IS THE ALLSTAR BAND, WITHOUT COREA. THE SECOND CD IS COREA'S ELEKTRIC BAND.

This is a 2 CD set of a concert from Japan in 1987. The first CD is the allstar band (minus Chick Corea) and is 49 minutes long. Most of the tracks are 4 to 5 minutes long, except for the last which is 8 minutes. The second CD is Chic Corea's Elektric band, is 59 minutes. The sound quality of this concert is excellent (as you would expect from GRP).

The first three songs are by Diane Schuur. Of the three, I only like Love Dance. I have never appreciated her over the top, affected vocal stylings. It always seemed forced and unnatural to me. She is much better she just sings and lets her normal voice come through, such as on Love Dance. Note that Grusin, Ritenour or Scott do not appear on the Shuur songs.

On the remaining tracks on the first CD, Grusin, Ritenour and Scott take turns leading the band. Note that Scott is not on all of the tracks. The last two Grusin tracks are the best.

I was never a big fan of GRP's style of Sunday Brunch, easy listening jazz. It is a style and sound that is as distinctive as Winham Hill's new age jazz is. To me, it is a white bread style that is dumbed down for the masses. It was certainly popular in the eighties and sold very well. You were certain to hear it as you ate your organic, vegetarian omelet for Sunday brunch at a place with a name like Blue Willow Cafe.

I think that artists like Tom Scott, Billy Cobham and Chic Corea really suffered when they went to GRP. Instead of playing energetic, innovative jazz, they jumped on the Sunday Brunch bandwagon. It isn't bad, and some of it is very enjoyable. It just seems to be all the same and can get boring at times.

The second CD is all Chick Corea's Elektric band. The tracks are longer, with 2 over 10 minutes. For the most part, I think this live performance is much better than the Elektric Band studio albums. The first two tracks are nothing special, and consists of little blasts of solos. Things get more interesting as the CD moves on.

If you like easy jazz or Corea's Elektric Band, then this CD is a serious find.

5 out of 5 stars Unique!.......2003-11-12

Unique Jazz CD with very good audio quality.
In the first CD play Dave Grusin to the keyboards, Lee Ritenour to the guitar, Tom Scott to the Sax, Vinnie Colaiuta to the drums and Diane Shuur sings in the first 3 song.
The second CD is totally with Chick Corea Elektric Band, with the best band he had ever had (Corea, Weckl, Patitucci, Gambale and Marienthal) exceptional live, the only of the quintet.
My highlight: the drummers!

5 out of 5 stars A Must.......2003-05-15

If you like dave grusin and chick corea and like me prefer more rock orientated jazz you must listen to this. With Vinnie Coluaita drumming for Grusin, and Weckl for Chick you drummers wont be dissapointed either. Includes the best version of Chicks 'Light years' I have heard with Daves kit sounding amazing (electronic tuned toms).'Rumble' is laughably good too!.All the Grusin classics like 'AM attitude' and some with Tom scott are all performed in a rocky/funky way with Ritnour adding to that feel with his trademark sound. Overall another brilliantly entertaining grp performance.

The Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin is quickly becoming a favorite with piano connoisseurs, particularly in late Romantic music. In this live recital, Hamelin concentrates mainly on unusual arrangements: a Beethoven movement as recomposed by Alkan, a Balakirev reduction of a Chopin concertos movement for solo piano, Busoni's Sonatina which uses themes from Bizet's Carmen. You have to be pretty far involved in the late Romantic ethos to appreciate these obscure tidbits, but if you are, Hamelin's virtuosic and colorful performances will prove extremely attractive. The live performance atmosphere comes across vividly in this recording, as does Hamelin's tone. --Leslie Gerber

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing!.......2007-07-12

I have listened this recital, because of praises which written in this page. Very dissapointing. Actually Hamelin will stand among secondary rank in great pianists ad infinitum. He always shows that he "can play" this instrument. But nothing exciting or meditative or lyric...Just pure, superficial technic. My only favorite Hameline is the third part of the second concerto of Shostakovich. That was not bad. I think he is good as concert performer for one enjoyable night. But I can't believe that he can play Bach or late Beethoven or Brahms, adequately. He can only plays his eccentricities. Ofcourse one should also praise him for his "Alkan or Busoni effort"
You may want to hear just for Alkan's interesting transcription.

5 out of 5 stars Marc-Andre Hamelin Hyperion CD.......2007-04-10

This is a wonderful CD full of out of the way pieces most of us do not know exsist. I loved the Chopin/Balakirev transcription of the Piano Concerto #1. Also try two other Hyperion CD's of Nikoli Kapustin, One played by Hamelin and the other by Steve Osborne. This is jazz in a classical format and it will wow your shirt off.

5 out of 5 stars This is it.......2007-02-26

Hamelin is probably one of the greatest pianists ever, and his courage in championing such unusual and technically demanding material as Godowsky's Études turns him into one of the most interesting musicians today. As for this particular recording, it's needless to say that his playing is superb, as usual, and his technique is unassailable and immaculate. His choice of material is bold, to say the least. He starts off with a wonderful reading of Beethoven's third piano concerto and then goes on to overwhelm the listener with effortless and sublime renditions of works by Chopin, Medtner, Busoni and - oh my! - Alkan. I never thought I would ever come to like Alkan's works, but Hamelin's rendition of the Études are so effective and engaging that I began to take some interest in it. It's by far the best live recording I've ever heard and it certainly helped me redefine my ideas about what's possible for a human being to do on the piano.

5 out of 5 stars this recording is very great.......2007-01-29

This recording was for me entree Marc Andre Hamelin. I think then he must is most amazing of technic since Liszt. No I did ever to hear Liszt, but I am pupil of Kremova, and she tell all pupil word of Mme Ida Nagy "et bene audet" of maestro. Of this recording not only is there all notes (Kremova required us learn Alkan op 76 naught if ever we may dare of playing recital!) but Mr Hamelin his of playing so confident and of "fun" and of warm! This recording is the very great. Did M Hamelin in real there play Alkan Beethoven No 3 cadenza! I would fainted were I present real there Wigmore Hall! Here it is on this recording! I would fainted! Is true.
I say here so will not so wounding, M Hamelin not is good play our Rachmaninov and Scriabin. So will not so harsh be Rachmaninov and Scriabin of his other recording difficult for artist such as M Hamelin are not the technic but the music sensiblite. M Hamelin a youth.
So! A great youth artist! Let he perform now youth accord a his greatness!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-09-18

Hyperion recorded this CD from a series of live recitals given in June 1994, at Wigmore Hall. It is one of my favorite live albums. Hamelin performs Alkan's transcription of Beethoven's 3rd concerto, the Trois Grandes Etudes Op. 76, as well as Medtner, Busoni and a Balakirev transcription of Chopin.

Hamelin's performance of Alkan's Beethoven 3rd is a remarkable feat of the recording age. Most pianists would never even touch the work with it's brilliant 6 minute cadenza that echoes the finale of Beethoven's 5th symphony. To perform it live is quite another matter. It is uncertain whether the great Busoni played the work himself in a recital he gave in Berlin in 1906. Hamelin's is the only recording of Alkan's transcription I'm aware of, but it's probably the only one needed.

Balakirev's transcription of the Romanza of Chopin's first piano concerto is a loyal one. However, this is probably my least favorite track on the album. While pretty and thoughtful, it seems out of place in this energetic collection. Hamelin's interpretation is a bit too clean and cold for my liking. His technique is suitable to play tranquil pieces wonderfully, but here it just doesn't seem to work.

Alkan's Trois Grandes Etudes op 76. are some of the most technically challenging compositions in the entire piano repertoire. In Hamelin, Alkan has a faithful performer that is able to create the effects of a full-scale orchestra on the piano using a mere five fingers. Not only does Hamelin perform this work live, he does so flawlessly. The first is the 'Fantasie' for left hand alone, the second 'Introduction, Variations and Finale' for right hand alone. The final 'Rondo Toccata' is a dizzying piece, reminiscent of the final movement of Chopin's Funeral Sonata. The 30-minute performance of this work leads one to admire both Hamelin's pianism, as well as his physical endurance!

The Carmen Fantasy by Busoni is essentially a whirlwind tour of Bizet with the flair of Busoni. Hamelin could have let loose with this piece, but instead decides to let the work speak for itself. The result is a reflective piece that is filled more with the contrast of emotions than excitement. Hamelin's performance is good, but it would also be great to hear this piece played with more energy.

The final piece on this album is Medtner's Danza festiva No. 3. It's whimsical that brings the album to a joyful close. This time, Hamelin's dynamics are perfect and bring out the color and energy in the piece.

All in all, 'Live at Wigmore Hall' is a remarkable achievement that is well worth adding to your collection. Hyperion has done remarkably well in putting together this album. The sound quality is crystal clear, and the audience's rapturous applause really adds to the enjoyment.

This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.

The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11

In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.

We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.

Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.

    4 out of 5 stars A- for effort.......2006-02-23

This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.

The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.

5 out of 5 stars What can you say?.......2003-01-03

I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?

How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.

One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.

So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.

Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.

5 out of 5 stars Inovative live cd format.......1999-05-05

I have found the music on this cd to be quite enjoyable. I was pleased to find extra songs provided with the video footage of the performance. I do however wish there was more video content. The amount on the disc leaves me yearning to see more. With any luck the label will release a sequel to this disc. I look forward to more products from this group in the future.

      2 out of 5 stars This Could've Been A Contenda!.......1998-11-11

The concept here is great, unfortunately the label (Heads Up) didn't see fit to include all of the songs from this set, nor did they keep the crowd noise on the disc (several songs simply fade out). I was very disappointed in the (skimpy) 43 minutes of music which appears to be spliced together. Additionally, there is video footage on the Enhanced CD portion containing performances of songs NOT on the CD - apparently taken from the same show (what's up with that?)!!! Overall, this product is below the fine standards that Heads Up has established. Perhaps if enough people complain, the label would consider reissuing this product with ALL of the concert intact. As a result, the two star rating is mostly for the musicians on the disc, who appear to be better than this disc projects them to be.
