The sounds for this series were recorded in 3D by Chuck Plaisance. His recording system is designed to simulate human hearing, using a binaural head microphone to capture depth, height, width, as well as directional movement. No special equipment is needed to get 3D sound from traditional stereo speakers. In fact, these albums will make your system - speakers or headphones - sound like it never has before. You are the experience.

All pieces contain compositions of pure Nature Sounds produced, arranged, edited and mastered by Chuck Plaisance and Suzanne Doucet. (aka Virtual Audio Environment).

Perfect To Fall Asleep To.......2006-07-20

I bought this CD because I didn't really know which type of sound I'd relax most too be it ocean, rain, forest, etc. Well I love all the sounds on this sampler, and I play it every night. My hubby says that 20 mins into the CD there's a rooster crowing, but I wouldn't know because by that time I'm already fast asleep. Great stuff!

3-Dimensional Pure Nature Sounds.......2005-11-21

This excellent compilation of 20 different Nature Sound albums was out of print, but is now finally available again through ONLY NEW AGE MUSIC(repackaged and remastered). This album creates a journey through different Nature scenes all recorded by Chuck Plaisance, with a special microphone that simulates human hearing. The sounds were then edited and composed, arranged and mixed like an orchestrated piece but still remain pure Sounds of Nature. Like Bernie Krause Doucet and Plaisance take essential Nature Sounds and recreate an ambience that takes you even deeper into the essence of Nature.

Sometimes when musicians try to combine traditional and contemporary ideas, it does not appeal to me. But this one is a winner! I've been playing traditional Scandinavian folk music for 30+ years, and enjoy the addition of non-traditional sounds such as the African and electronic ones found on some of these cuts. This is really tasty music. Buy it.

Various artists and various quality.......2005-08-14

About half the music is really good and catching, but just as many of the melodies are boring or too similar to each other. The quality is very varied and while some of the music should rate as 5 stars, I choose 3 stars as an average for the whole cd.

This ain't ABBA..........2004-04-11

...and that's a relief. No, this is something better -- a truly unique compilation of equally unique artistes blending pre-Medieval tradition with post-modern flourishes.
I had heard of Garmarna and Hedningarna before buying this disc, but my knowledge of them was scant at best. As for the rest, I knew not a thing. But I took a chance and what a surprise. This disc touches on music that covers both ends of the spectrum: from quaint, straight ahead renditions from groups such as Chateau Neuf, Den Fule, and the instrumentally exciting Väsen, to the experimental stylings of fiddler Hege Rimestad, riff rockers Hoven Droven and the aforementioned Hedningarna.
The thing that will surprise most about this style of music is how immediate it all sounds, both foriegn and familiar at the same time. Hints of jazz and classical seem to pepper certain aspects of the arrangements of some, but the most obvious is the connection it bares to Irish folk music.
If you want a new musical experience and like what you've read here, I say take a chance on this and the other Nordic Roots compilations. From there, buy individual albums by the artists themselves, especially Hedningarna and Garmarna. (The Garmarna track here is not really representative of their newer material by the way, but still worth checking out!)

Unexpected and very cool!.......2003-05-25

"20 tracks, 78 minutes, Cheaper than Food!" proclaimed the sticker on this CD, peeking out at me from a store's disorganized rows of miscellaneous world music discs. `Cheaper than food?!' I thought, bewildered. `What sort of thing is that to say about a recording? If that's the best praise anyone can offer, it doesn't bode well for the quality of the content ...' But economy and curiosity won out and I bought it anyway. What a surprise--it was great! A caption from the back of the package sums up my reaction perfectly: "An ideal introduction to the vibrant traditional music scene developing across the Nordic lands: incredible playing, catchy tunes, brilliant arrangements and strange instruments playing pre-medieval as well as modern compositions. All this music at a very special price." Neo-traditional would probably be a better description of most of the selections, as they combine the quaintness of traditional tunes and folk instruments with elements of rock, technopop, jazz, world fusion music and new age. Swedish and Sami, Finnish and Norweigan, the groups featured on "Nordic Roots" display verve and virtousity, inviting the listener to delve deeper into this fascinating genre--obviously the reason for such an inexpensive sampler. Featured artists include Vasen, Hedningarna, Garmarna, Groupa, Hoven Droven and Wimme. Despite the fact that I actually have Scandinavian roots, I'd never had any exposure to the music of that region. So this album was well worth the price I originally paid--a totally new musical experience. Happily, NorthSide has continued this intriguing series, further introducing and promoting their artisits in "Nordic Roots 2" and "Nordic Roots 3", both of which are also "cheaper than food". Give one a try!

I Keep Returning.......2006-05-12

I have had this recording for years and I keep returning to it and never tire. About 2 years ago, I played this CD every night while getting my baby (now a toddler) ready for bed. I have hundreds of CDs and like most all kinds of music, but if I could only have one... it would Bach Variations. It is not too sleepy, not too technic, varied, perfect.

I have long been a fan of Windham Hill, but this is truly special. I also love mellow jazz and classical and this is a brilliant blending plus a couple of suprises into the mix. I really reccomend this work!

OK, this one's fantastic, too.......2007-02-13

Nordic Roots, Vol. 2 is a bit further out than the first volume, but definitely to my liking. My guess is that the selections, even when rocky, are performed with enough folk idiom to be enjoyable to me. The final cuts, "Lavalek" and "Brekken" are rockiest, but even those felt OK. (I am not a lover of hard rock.) My favorite is "Polonaise from Sexdraga" which reminds me strongly of a nyckelharpa tune I've always loved to play on flute. Nice selection. Nice price. 3/16/07: Did I say I liked this CD? Well, I LOVE it! Over a few weeks of listening to it from time to time, this music has really grown on me. Good work, folks!

Only thing missing!.......2006-11-16

The album is awesome!! Only thing missing would be a Sugarcubes/Bjork song. "Regina" would be a great song for this album to represent Iceland.

The Best Of the NorthSide Samplers.......2004-04-11

Again, NorthSide brings us some wonderful samples from the fertile Scandinavian folk scene on this Nordic Roots 2 CD. After taking a chance on the first one (after all, it was so cheap!) and being wowed, I had to get this one. Many of the same artistes from the previous collection can be found here, along with other interesting groups. From the infectious openers Vildhonung (Wild Honey) from Boot and Mettsän Tytto (Forest Maiden) from Hedningarna, through ultra modern twists from Garmarna (Vedergällningen, or Vengeance), Sorten Muld (2 Søstre, or 2 Sisters), to the jazz stylings of Lavalek by Groupa and the driving hard rock of Brekken by Hoven Droven, one would have to be dead not to find something to like here. Just one warning: this stuff is addictive.

Full of fun and energy!.......2003-05-25

Ranging in mood from joyful and jaunty to dark and driving, this is my favorite of the three "Nordic Roots" samplers that the NorthSide label has released to date. Intense stuff is to be found here; there is nothing half-way about this music! To those not familiar with the genre, I'm not sure how to describe it. There are elements similar to Celtic and folk, as well as liberal doses of rock and techno influence. But what shines through most noticeably are the traditional Scandinavian roots of the selections - strident and visceral, perhaps reflecting the harshness of the climate, the Nordic peoples' fierce pride in their native cultures, and the darkness of their mythology. At first listen, the music might seem eclectic to a neophyte, abundant with the sounds of hardanger fiddle, nyckelharpa and unfamiliar languages, but it all becomes quite addictive. In addition to many of the same artists featured on the previous "Nordic Roots" release, new groups include Annbjorg Lien, Sorten Muld, Varttina, Bask, Boot, and Bukkene Bruse. I find this particular CD to contain great motivational music to work by, especially in the first half. Give it a listen and see for yourself--after all, at its price, it's "still cheaper than food", as the sticker on the casing brags! (Well, some foods, anyway.)

Intriguing and Beguiling Music.......2002-12-27

Music from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland has magical qualities that are beyond word descriptions, as beautiful as the fjords and the night-time clear skies with falling stars, an Impressionistic painting as hard to describe as the Northern Lights. The female vocalists are enchanting like the Celts and Hungarians (& just as hard to describe, ancient languages with equally mysterious origins). There is violin music played on the hardanger fiddle which has sympathetic vibrating strings, that provide a drone, amazingly hypnotic and trance-like. The music is slightly familiar if you are acquainted with Appalachian fiddle music or bluegrass, add to it some Austrian waltzes, and an occasional Polish mazurka: then once-in-awhile give it a soft velvet feeling. The fact that much of it is over 100 years old, makes it true roots music, occasionally it is up-dated with an electrified sound amplifying the intensity and magical qualities ... sometimes flutes, other times a viola, the nyckelharpa, and other ancient Scandinavian instruments provide the intrigue and enchantment. Having heard "Nordic Roots" Volume 1 (& bought it), I looked forward to Volume 2. The best and most talented musical artists provide extraordinairy examples of this genre for an unbelievable price. Undoubtedly, the captivating musical sounds by these artists will hypnotize you into wanting a full CD by one or more of these musicians. Great CD!.......2005-10-12

I bought this CD purely for the first track, it is such a beautiful arrangement of Faure's Pavane. Someone had emailed me an mp3 of the piece about 8 years, but I had no info on who it was was performed by or where to find out. It took me 8 years and alot of posts on bulletin boards to finally find out. This Cd is worth it for the first track alone, although there are a bunch of other nice tracks on here.

a hard to come by treasure.......2003-03-11

Erik Satie never sounded so good. Windham Hill is legendary for compiling the best in the music business to create CDs that have music that is rareley heard anywhere else, and phenominally good. I also own other Windham records, of which my two favourites are: Touch: 25 years of guitar, and now The Impressionists. I HIGHLY reccomend purchasing this CD along with 'Touch'. It's money well spent.

Windham Hills best recording.......2003-03-06

I have a number of Windham Hills recording and I think The Impressionist CD is the best of them all. Each track on this CD is fantastic, it is truely difficult to pick a favorite.

Every autumn and throughout the winter, I play this CD allowing each note of the songs to harmonize with the changing of the autumn leaves, from yellow to orange, to red. The beauty of the Windham Hill artists interpretations of Faure, Debussy, and Satie just come alive. Their notes seem so light, clear, and crisp like that first day of cool winter air. They pick up so much of natures's beauty to the familiar composed pieces. The overall arrangement of the pieces flow well and smoothly until you had realized that it's time to push the start button again. This is a beautiful work and is highly recommended.

Best assortment of New Age/Ambient music by HOS.......2006-06-27

I have been a fan of Hearts of Space radio for years and I have owned this collection since it was available on cassette back in the ninties. I have never tired of listening to the selections. The music is stlll as fresh and inviting as it was the day I first received it. It satisfies the need for dark, night ambient music that you are craving for. This C.D. is a must have for any HOS fan or lover of space/ambient music in genteral.

An Overlooked Classic.......2005-10-24

I first heard this album when I was seven years old. The music was so strange and beautiful, especially for a kid raised on 80s pop and hair metal, that I started to cry. Thirteen years later, it still has a powerful effect. Synths and keyboard are woven with ancient tribal rhythms and Celtic harp to create a sound that transcends millennia. Highly recommended.

I came upon this sampler way back when it was released, through a mail order catalog i can't even remember...I got the tape, it was eaten by an old radio....and then I found the CD not long after...but enough of the story, to the music.
Each artist in this sampler is amazing starting with giles reaves, all the way to bruce stark. Of the artists, i now own the individual cd's of all the songs but 4 of them...
Start with Giles Reaves...his soaring soundscapes and tribal like undertones to Evolutions set the tone...Robert Rich paints beautiful soundscapes with his 2 tracks...Tim Story is a maestro as the solo piano and guitar...Mychel Danna uses celtic sounds as his strength...Rapheal is a passionate keyboard expert...and to mis it up a little...throw in the light hearted celtic work of Bill Douglas and the flamenco styling of Gino D'Auri
I would recommend this cd to anyone who is starting to like new age...it's a great vehicle to get introduced to the genre, as all of the Hearts of Space Universe Samplers are...hats off to Stephen Hill for producing a great combination of the masters of his label.

Best HOS album I've heard!.......2001-11-21

New Age music can often be too soupy, but this album is right up there with Phillip Glass and Kitaro.

This is the best Windham Hill sampler and nothing like the "heralded" but really laid back "Winter's/Summer's Solstice" releases by Paul Winter, one of Windham Hill's premier artists of the 80s. While SOTM is classified as "electronic" music, it has oriental and jazz inspirations throughout.

I have loved this release since the 80s. When my tape started to wear out, I copied it and bought the CD. But every Soul of the Machine CD that I buy seems to disappear into thin air, just like that other reviewer has experienced. Hmmm, my friends DO love this release ... .

Listen to this by the pool or while sitting on the patio in the evening. It is relaxing and, even after nearly 15 years, it is still one of my favorite CDs. If you like Arkenstone, Aura and Grusin (Dave or Don), you won't be disappointed. It will grow on you, too, and become your favorite CD in no time flat.

I used to own two copies of this CD and they both have disappeared because once people hear it, they steal it. This is simply one of the best CDs available in the new age/electronic genre. One of the top CDs in my 'desert island' collection.

Beautiful-Calming.......2003-08-01

This sampler of Windham Hill artists is beautiful and very calming. It is fine as background music,but really it deserves to be listened to over headphones in an enviornment where you can give the music your attention. I usually listen to hardcore punk or metal. This is an album I listen to when I want to slowly relax all of the muscles in my body. This music verges on the spiritual,and I recommend it for anyone who is getting fed up with all of the stress our lives generates.

Mediocre Mish-Mash.......2004-11-08

I bought this SACD in the hopes that it would make a good "preview disc" to show off the technology of my SACD player. Unfortunately, that is not what this CD is meant to do. Most songs feature only one or two instruments or the human voice, which is not where the SACD format stands out. Think of this CD as more of a "Sample of Telarc's lineup" than a "Sample of SACD technology". You will be hard-pressed to find more than two or three songs that you enjoy listening to.
My recommendation for people looking at this this album is to look at the track list, find songs you are interested in, and buy the Telarc album the song came from. You will be much happier.

Appreciation for Music.......2004-01-24

This is the first SACD that I bought from the store. It marked a very distinct quality between SACD and normal CD. My favourite tracks are Badia, Simple Gifts and Give Me One Reason. The accoustic guitar is crystal clear, the orchestra has added more depth and the vocal coming from centre speaker is really wonderful. Recommended Surround Setup included in the cover booklet is quite helpful.

Great selection of music.......2003-06-19

I don't actually have an SACD player, so I've been listening to the CD layer only. Still... I'm blown away by the sound quality on this disc - I imagine the SACD layers sound even better. Furthermore, the selection of music on this disc is outstanding. If you have a SACD player, I'd say this is a must buy. If you like the artists/tracks on the disc, you may consider getting this even if you don't own an SACD player (you may later).

I like this SACD!.......2003-04-22

I use the Philips 963SA to play this 6ch SACD & open all speakers,great sounding! Every channel is very clean/very clear,but if "they" add more bass that will be more better! Songs are pretty good! I give this sacd "A-" User please use the "Multi-Channel Decoder" to play,if not or use normal cd mode to play,the sound is very small & bad (just like a member CHIEN,CHIN-HUNG's description) I think he use a wrong method to play so this sacd cannot eductive all the things from the song! I highly recommend this cd to all sacd lover! Thank you!

I am very disappointed.......2002-10-21

I received and listened this sacd on Oct,18th.

I have some comments about this sacd :
Manufactured quality is bad,from track 1 to track 7 , the music is performing very well , but from track 8 to final track , it is out of order , I heard some interruption on each track and sound became small , when I changed to CD mode, the sound is still small. I also listened to another sacd(also manufactured by telarc-stir it up), the music is performing very well , so I can sure this sacd have problem,I would like to suggest telarc to check the quality of same production lot.If telarc don't clarify this issue , you should consider carefully before you buy this sacd.
