4 out of 5 stars Very good show which I hadn't heard of..........2007-05-13

I was very into theatre in high school and college and thought I was up on most musicals, but had never heard of this show until recently. It's comprised of three short stories which were adapted into the musical format. The first two stories are tied together very well, although the last seems tacked on. But the songs are catchy and it's fairly easy to figure out what's happening simply by listening to the songs. There are two songs which are tied for my favoritism: "It's a Fish" from Adam and Eve and "You Are Not Real" from Passionella. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars THE APPLE TREE (1966 ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST).......2007-04-10

IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. I WENT TO THE REVIVAL OF THE APPLE TREE ON BROADWAY IN NEW YORK CITY AND LOVED THE SCORE BUT THERE WASN'T A SOUNDTRACK AVAILABLE SO I PURCHASED THE ORIGINAL VERSION AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars I still remember these songs after 40 years.......2006-11-05

I saw this show on the stage when it first ran, and have never forgotten it. The key to a good Broadway show is this question: Are you humming the songs when you leave the theatre? In the case of The Apple Tree, the answer is a resounding "Yes." I have been waiting 40 years for this show to be revived, and I have tickets for the revival opening in December at the Roundabout. I hope not to be disappointed, for the trio of Barbara Harris, a very young Alan Alda, and the late Larry Blyden were terrific. The three-part concept can be jarring because just when you're getting into the story, it ends -- but just enjoy the kind of songs they just don't write anymore.

3 out of 5 stars Really 2.5.......2006-07-25

SO this is another show thats actually three one acts. The first "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is the best by far. It has really cute songs and nice plot. Thats the only reason I rounded this up from 2.5 to 3 stars. The rest of the show is nothing great. "Lady and Tiger" is short and boring. And "Passionella" is exactly what it sounds like, a knock off of Cinderella. But hey, its a good show for collectors and "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is nice. Favorite Song: "Its A Fish"

1 out of 5 stars Boring material that you forget very easily.......2006-06-29

According to some reviews, this musical was supposed to be very good and I bought it. Unfortunately, I was quite dissapointed. It's composed of three different tales, the first one referring to the Adam & Eve biblical story. The lyrics here are very silly and tedious. The second tale, "The Lady or the Tiger?" contains songs that are simply awful, probably the worst ever written for a Broadway show. The third story, "Passionella", contains music that does nothing to make things better. The album contains a good informative booklet in English, German, French & Italian (as Sony uses to do)which says that Time magazine defined this show as "three moldy figs". I entirely agree. I would recommend this musical to those suffering from insomnia: it will put them to sleep right away.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible performances, flawed sound.......2003-05-22

I won't spend much time talking about how wonderful Nina's singing is -- you wouldn't be here if you weren't already a believer. Forbidden Fruit's "I'll Look Around" is an amazingly beautiful slow torcher. "Just Say I Love Him" is a wonderfully smoky number with a pleasingly spare arrangement that includes an understated Cubano rhumba beat. Nina rerecorded "Just Say I Love Him" in 1993 but the 1961 New York studio version is my favorite interpretation.

The big problem here is that this Collectibles Records (via Rhino) combo album is poorly mastered. You can't really hear it on the sample clips available above but every single song has an imbalance of too much low booming bass sound interfering with Nina's voice. All the low piano and standup bass lines are overwhelmingly strong. There is even some ultra-low rumble that wasn't removed in the mastering process. To top it off there is a prevalent 60Hz electric power hum found on the seven tracks recorded live at Newport. What were you guys at Collectibles thinking? Spend a little time getting it right next time! Nina Simone is soooo worth it... -Bink

5 out of 5 stars So long,Little Girl Blue. Rest in peace now........2003-04-22

Monday,April 21,2003.One of the greatest singers and piano players of jazz is gone at 70.Nina Simone, born Eunice Waymon in 1933,North Carolina, passed away today at her home in the south of France.
She will remain as one of the most haunting voices in the jazz history, with Lady Day and Dinah Washington. She also will remain as an incredible piano player, among the greatest. She could have been one of the greatest classical piano players too, but she was a black girl, and during the fifties,a black girl (or a man) wasn't supposed to play classical music (remember Art Tatum, for example).
I listened to this record three times before starting to write this review. And believe me,it's very difficult to write about such an immense artist at the time of her death.
Nina recorded several albums for the Colpix label. And they are all masterpieces: "Nina at Town Hall","Nina at the Village Gate","Nina Simone with strings","the amazing Nina Simone","sings Duke Ellington","Nina Simone at Carnegie Hall".
I won't write about each tune;I'll just tell you which ones are to me,tonight, the most emotionnal ones: the very sad "I'll look around" (remember Billie Holiday's version);the hard-bop blues feeling of Cannonball Adderley's "Work song",and tears come at my eyes while listening to Nina's outstanding vocals;the great "Gin house blues";Oscar Brown's "forbidden fruit";the somptuous "trouble in mind",with Nina's imperial piano and vocals, five minutes and thirty-two seconds of terrific music;the Dorothy Fields/Jimmy McHugh's "Porgy",one of the most beautiful songs ever written,in which Nina reachs a very emotionnal peak;the classic "Little Liza Jane".
After listening to these two records,if you're not convinced that Nina Simone was one of the most important jazz artists of all times, then you'd rather have to listen to another kind of music. To me,she was the last of the very great jazz singer.Just one of the most beautiful voices ever.
So long,Nina;maybe eternity will be smooth and soft to you,if your life wasn't.I'll miss you.

5 out of 5 stars It was well worth the wait..........1999-03-24

This is the album that I have waited almost 30 years to own... It was well worth the wait!!!

In late 1969, I first heard the album "Nina's Choice"; a Colpix (Columbia Pictures) compilation of Ms. Simone's fine recordings for that label.

Since that day, I have searched high and low for a copy of "Nina's Choice", for the original albums from which the songs were drawn, or for other albums/tapes/cd's containing these classics.

A former girlfriend's father owned copies of most of Nina's early albums, but prying them from him was literally "Mission Impossible". They went happily with him to the grave...

With the release of "Anthology: The Colpix Years" in 1996, my dreams were partially satisfied... I bought the album at my very first opportunity.

At last, I owned copies of "I Don't Want Him (You Can Have Him)", "Little Liza Jane", "Work Song", "Forbidden Fruit"; and other unforgettable Nina Simone interpretations of songs like "That's Him Over There"....

BUT, I did not have "Memphis In June", or the one song that I just would NOT be without, the incomparable "Just Say I Love Him"....

With delivery of the CD, Forbidden Fruit/At Newport, this past Saturday, my search is over...

I'm still trying to wipe the silly smile off of my face!

My old love has been located, my passion rekindled... Praise the Lord for the great Al Shackman on guitar, and for Nina's poignant interpretation of the most memorable lyrics I've ever known....

"...just say that I need him, as roses need the rain; and tell him that without him, my dreams are all in vain..."

5 out of 5 stars A great Cd.......2002-09-23

I think this album should recieve 5 stars. I think this because Forbidden Fruit by Zorn is a great piece of music which everyone should be familiar with. He quotes some great stuff in the work...among other things an excerpt from Beethoven's Grosse Fugue for String quartet. The rest of the music on this CD is fantastic. I feel the reviewer below gave three stars due to a inability to understand Zorn. But if you don't fall under that category or if you are willing to listen and be openminded I reccomend this CD without reserve

3 out of 5 stars Good Kronos Stuff.......2002-06-24

This album was my introduction to the Kronos Quartet. It is as good an introduction as I've heard. It illustrates both the positive and negative aspects of this talented quartet.

Some of the works on this recording are quite wonderful. Most exciting to me is the excerpt from Terry Riley's Salome Dances for Piece. The movement is exciting and stunningly played. It is also interesting to compare the version here with the version on the Kronos' recording of the complete work. If you listen to them side by side you can hear the extent of improvisation in the work. The most interesting thing is that, despite the improvisations, the work has a similar impact in each version.

Other gems on the CD include the Salonen title track, the Piazolla pieces, and a passionate reading of the Barber Adagio, perhaps the best I've ever heard. The Kronos also does a fine job with the Webern, though the competition here is much more fierce. And they also do a great job with the Schnittke Quartet, though I have always found the Russian composer's work hard to get close to.

Some of the other pieces are less successful. The quartet version of the Part Fratres is not bad, but does not have the impact of the all cello version. The Jon Lurie piece is a throwaway. And I have never understood the world's fascination with John Zorn. Just don't get it.

All in all, this is a good introduction to the work of the Kronos and most interesting for an alternate version of a major score by Terry Riley. But it's not a must have.

5 out of 5 stars An Eclectic Mix.......1998-09-23

This is a terrific CD. From Webern to John Lurie, to John Zorn's wild "Forbidden Fruit," to a stunning rendition of Barber's Adagio in it's original String Quartet form, this album rocks. Okay, probably not the most appropriate description of a string quartet album, but it does--it rocks. I think this is my favorite recording of the Barber Adagio. Some challenging pieces, but for anyone that loves contemporary classical music, this is a great set.

One of Marion's early albums, but not to be missed. "Asha" is one of the most intoxicating songs ever played by anybody on the sax or not. Full of passion and mood, it is an inspiration for the soul. "Forbidden Fruit" is infused with Asian-style tones mixed with sensual feelings. "Nocturnal Serenade" is an artistic high.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Compares to ELEGY!!!!.......2005-08-21

Elegy is way underrated and unknown to the progressive genre world.. Fans of progressive metal must pick Forbidden Fruit up. I stumbled upon Ian Parry's vocals from Consortium Project 3 : Terra Incognita. He has a powerful and melodic vocal lines. From there I went on to purchase CP 2 and 1. So I would have the complete set. I was thrilled to own all 3 cds as all 3 are superb progressive metal albums. Then I also did a little bit of historical identification. Ian Parry was from Elegy!!! And I went ahead and purchase 4 albums.. State Of Mind, Principles Of Pain, Manifestation Of Fear and Forbidden Fruit. Elegy is not those kind of Prog Band for anyone to liked the very 1st time they listen to their songs. It is progressive alright with tons of odd times signatures and displacement of rhythm and drum beats. You have to constantly listen again and again so that it shines out. From the first time when you listen to it.. you know these guys are awesome with their instrumentation technique, skills and their song arrangement. You loved it but you just couldn't grasp the structure of the song just yet. It leaves you wanting to listen more and more each time you finished the entire disc. Elegy is a band with sound musicians and musical abilities written all over their songs. I have been listening to all 4 albums tons of times and have yet to grasp every single song because of the odd song structure....It is hard to even play their songs..... My high recommendation is those 4 albums...You need to check thes guys out because you will missed out a whole lot if you don't. Think you know what progressive metal is?? Think again!!! Elegy is another whole level of progressive metal. Challenge yourself and see you could digest ELEGY!!!

5 out of 5 stars It is a crime this band doesn't get more recognition.......2003-02-26

Elegy's music is a mix between power metal/progressive with classic hard rock influences. The musical dexterity of each member is beyond credibility. Elegy's music is not commercial and is not easy to get at first, but taste is developed slowly until it clicks. This is the type of good music that evolves over time.

Ian Parry's lyrics are well thought out, often expressing many metaphors and analogies. This album is the first featuring Patrick Rondat (ex-Jan Michel Jarre) on guitars. At first I was skeptical of Forbidden Fruit because departed original guitarist, Henk Van der Laars, had enormeous talent. Dirk Bruinenberg at drums is phenomenal. To me, he is one of the top ranked drummers today, someone not to be overlooked (check him out with Adagio, Consortium Project and most recently with Patrick Rondat's solo band).

It's very regretful that Elegy is one of those bands that are not that well known. Maybe it's because of its management or music label, etc. But this CD truly rocks. It has more upbeat sound to it than its predecessor, Manifestation of Fear, which is also a tremendous effort. This band deserves more recognition!

    5 out of 5 stars maybe Elegy's best !!!!!!.......2002-01-20

Well, I have heard almost all Elegy's recordings and this really blows my mind. Ian Parry is such a great singer! and I love their "State of Mind" album, but "Manifestation of Fear" dissapointed me a little. I really like Elegy's work in the past and for me "Supremacy" is their best.
Forbidden Fruit starts with a fast rocker named "Icehouse" that is really good with an awesome catchy bridge to the chorus, one the greatest songs in the album is "Force Majeure" (song 2) a really fast heavy metal song that will blow your mind!! incredible!!. And the other favorites for me are the great "Behind the tears" (so 'darn' good!), "'Til eternity" and "The great charade" (excellent prog-metal!).

I highly recommend this album to anyone who likes some of prog-metal or heavy. For me this is Ian Parry's greatest album with the band... I hope they could delight us with a new work soon!!

    5 out of 5 stars classic elegy!.......2000-11-21

elegy doesn't seem to miss henk! ian parry is great on the vocals and patrick rondat has more than compensated for henk! great album!
