A Classic Gem of Jazz for All Time!!!.......2004-04-30

This is one of the best jazz albums ever recorded...period. Every song flows flawlessly into the next. Each cut is arranged, engineered, and orchestrated perfectly.

Carmen McRae is in very fine voice throughout. She doesn't simply sing these lyrics. Her voice becomes an instrument itself, expressing emotion with deep feeling. Just listen to "I Need You In My Life" or "Won'tcha Stay With Me" to experience this phenomenon.

The guest musicians who added their gifted artistry are none other than Hank Crawford, Jorge Dalto, Cornell Dupree, Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, Chris Parker, Grover Washington Jr., Buster Williams, and Errol "Crusher" Bennet. The musicians in addition to these guests are pretty awesome. Individually and collectively, they burn up these tracks with some hot sounds.

The opening title song "I'm Coming Home Again" is magical with Hubert Laws accompanying Carmen. "Burst In With The Dawn", written by Al Jarreau, is a great uptempo number featuring the trumpet of Freddie Hubbard. Carmen's phrasing in "Come In From The Rain" is mature and the guitar solo from Cornell Dupree is excellent. "Everything Must Change" is wonderfully produced, from Carmen's vocal to the sounds of Hubert Laws and Grover Washington, Jr. "Mister Magic" is truly the best version of this song ever. Carmen is magnifique, Hubert Laws is very fine, and Grover Washington Jr. has never been heard like this before, not even on his own album version of this song. The finale is a knockout: "New York State Of Mind" with a soulful Carmen, featuring the great Freddie Hubbard and the gifted pianst. No matter how many times I play it I never, ever tire of hearing this one.

This work was originally recorded in 1978 in New York. It is now digitally remastered on CD in Canada. The sound is flawless.

My Introduction to Carmen McRae.......2002-09-07

This album was my first introduction to the vocal talents of Carmen McRae. The music backing McRae is an absolutely glorious fusion of modern and old school jazz. The singer's phrases is so effortless. This set of music is wonderful for a truly romantic evening with your "significant other", two stiff high balls and candlelight.

A heavy jazz masterpiece not for the average listener........2002-08-23

By this time Carmen had lost a lot of highs in her voice because of smoking too much.Carmen moans,groans & wails some of the finest jazz & pop material of with some of the finest musicianal backing.This is high anxiety music at its finest.A masterpiece in a painting is only done once & you can't play it and hear it agin.These are masterpieces to play again & again.If you wanted something light to click your heels up to forget this one."I Need You In My Life" is fantastic "Come In From The Rain" just as good just listen to the thunder & lightning at the end of it;listen to Cleo Laine do it on "Woman To Woman" different & also excellent.On "Everythinhg Must Change" Carmen does an 8:54 version of it.Carmen starts out on her blusey sultry behind the beat phrasing & then her musicians come in and play instrumental classical & sxxx kicking rock horn jazz and then creschendos into Carmen singing out into the middle of the desert where the camels are dead and there is no water but there just happens to be a full orchestra & a great piano to back her.Don't miss "Sweet Alabis" &"I'd Rather Leave While I'm In Love" ain't nothin light."Mr. Magic 12 minute delight & "New York State of Mind" 7:4l also delight.Carmen does a beautiful balad version of the Carpenter song "I Won't Last A Day Without You".All selections are exceptional.There are 2 or 3 different formats on the market of this; doesen't really matter which one you get,stay away from the extended import version with just an extended disco vesion of Mr. Magic.This is some of Carmen's finest work towards the end of her carrer.I was floored when I accidentally found this on CD years ago.This recording company has excellent taste to be remastering something so time transcending as this recording.

The album is quite good, the musicians talented, but I have heard the same music on other CD's played a bit better. However I love any civil war music and will listen to this CD many times

The Best.......2003-02-22

This is probably the best and most authentic renditions of music from the era of the Civil War that you will ever hear. Forget the country music versions, if you want to hear the songs the way they would have sounded this is it. I cannot say enough about this album. For the true belivers.

St. Thomas' debut album is a must have. Sounding a bit like the Norwegian version of Neil Young, St. Thomas fuses folk, country and a bit of yodeling to produce a unique sound. This album may take a few listens to fully appreciate, but it will be well worthwhile.

St. Thomas is insane! This is by far one of the best cd's i've ever heard. Best songs on the album are: The Cool Song, Cornerman, Take a Dance with Me, and pretty much all the others. Bookstore is a little out there but still solid. Be sure to pick this one up!

just got this. a mellow, melancholy record. very beautiful. its really good. comparisons to neil young are unavoidable, so there it is. in fact, the first song is really similar to "heart of gold" on any number of levels. youll like this if you like any of the palace stuff, neil young, centromatic, my morning jacket, early beck, etc. really good. id love to hear more from this guy.

I just happened to download the song "strangers out of blue", and I was so impressed that i ran to the music store immediately.It was long ago that a song so caught me that I just wanted to hear it again and again. So yes, I bought the album for this one song, but it hasn't been out of my cdplayer since, and why couldn't I have discovered it earlier....
Yes, of course his voice resembles Neil Young, and at first the songs remind you of Harvest indeed. There are worse influences, and after listening to it once or twice and carefully, you will discover an original and authentic artist. This is breakable music, sad and yet funny. My album of the year, and I can't wait for him to perform in Belgium.

Brothers is about the relationship between two brothers (Ulrich Thomsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas) and the aftermath when one brother comes home after being held prisoner in Afghanistan. The orchestral score music was recorded in London with emmbers of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by James Sherman.

Beau Jocque I'm Coming Home: A Tribute to The Zydeco Giant.......2000-08-02

The title of this latest release by Beau Jocque and The Zydeco Hi-Rollers is indeed poignant. I'm Coming Home represents the final musical chapter recorded by Beau Jocque and released just seven months after his untimely passing.

Mardi Gras Records has joined with Beau's widow, Michelle Espre to celebrate his musical past and to treat fans to a new beginning for one of the best Zydeco bands on earth. I'm Coming Home is a compilation of early material previously recorded by Beau Jocque and The Zydeco Hi-Rollers that also contains several tracks recorded by the band following the passing of their enormous leader.

The album opens with the band's 1993 extended play single, "Nursery Rhymes" which features Jocque and drummer Steve "Skeeta" Charlot in rare Hi-Roller form, bantering back and forth as they create musical magic to some of our beloved childhood rhymes in this Zydeco original. What follows is five classic tracks produced by Jocque himself including, outrageous productions on "Beau Jocque Makes You Jump," "Puddy Cat," and once again the Giant's ability to turn his cover of Fernest Arcenaux's "Zydeco Boogaloo" into his own.

The album also contains some well produced material by The Zydeco Hi-Rollers including, "She Keeps Holding On" (a tribute to Michele Espre's determination to keep Beau's musical vision alive), "Hi-Roller's Zydeco" and "Hi-Roller's In Town" which feature the added talents of Jeffery Broussard and Jo Jo Reed.

The album concludes with Beau Jocque's gripping blues rendition of the Clifton Chenier classic, "I'm Coming Home." One can't help but feel extremely saddened by the loss that has come upon the Zydeco community with the passing of this musical Giant.

The challenge for The Zydeco Hi-Rollers with the release of I'm Coming Home rests in their ability to transcend their leader's legend. Their musical capabilities as a band are immense. However, it is a challenge for the band to deliver their sound without the enormous voice that is Beau Jocque. Clearly, I'm Coming Home is an album of promise. But, it is also a statement by The Zydeco Hi-Rollers that in their grief they will continue to keep the Beau Jocque sound alive and musically prevail in the Kingdom of Zydeco.

I'm Coming Home is a gift to fans of Beau Jocque and The Zydeco Hi-Rollers. The effort is a labor of love by the band and Michelle Espre who worked closely with great talents in the industry including producers Warren Hildebrand and Jerry Embree to make sure that the Zydeco Giant's legend lives on. Clearly they have all succeeded on this four-pepper release in making sure that fans of Beau Jocque and The Zydeco Hi-Rollers can take pride in the past and still see the promise of the future.

Saving the Best For Last.......2000-07-22

"I'm Coming Home" is Beau Jocque's best and final piece of work. The Zydeco giant died in September 1999, but his family and friend put together this album as a tribute to the man who put Zydeco in the spotlight, but never received the fame he so justly deserved.

The wonderful liner notes by Michael Tisserand tell the history of Beau Jocque and the Zydeco High Rollers. Some may prefer his earlier works, but for me this album is the perfect mix of old and new. It is a real treat to hear the members of the Zydeco High roller both old and new. This album features Beau Jocque's previously unreleased "zydeco nursery rhymes" which are about as novel as they come. "She Keeps Holding On" is a wonderful trubine to the late giant's wife Michelle. "I'm Coming Home" is the best track on the album, fitting it that he saved his best for last.

Beau Jocque will be missed by his family, friends, and fans. This last album keeps his music alive for those of us who missed his final live performance.

I've listened to this wonderful CD album by David Joseph, and want to say that every Christian American should have a copy. The combination of messages on this piece of work needs to be passed from hand to hand...neighborhood to neighborhood. I haven't seen this sort of dedication in much Country Music lately. It's refreshing and worth the five star rating.

Carmen McRae was a legendary singer by the time the 1970's came around and her extraordinary recording output warranted far greater commercial success but with no radio support for great singers in that musically bleak period Miss McRae went from one label to another but always managed to release classic and creative collections such as this awesome masterpiece with guest appearances by fellow music legends Hubert Laws, Freddie Hubbard, Hank Crawford, and Grover Washington,Jr. and her tremendous tour-de-force version of Grover's "Mister Magic" is a wondrous listening experience! It was said that this Canadian project was a labor of love by Carmen's fellow musicians and they all donated their time with no pay in honor of Miss McRae...this is rare in the music world and shows the respect and admiration these giants had for the talented and overlooked Carmen McRae and did she ever rise to the occasion and deliver...this collection of great songs contain all definitive versions and Carmen really nails the Billy Joel classic "New York State Of Mind" and makes it a truly riveting experience that must have thrilled Mr. Joel!!! "I'm Coming Home Again" is haunting and moving as never before and "Burst In With The Dawn" is funky with a great Carmen vocal.
