On his seventh album (and first for Dave Matthews' ATO label), David Gray refines his sonic palette with wonderful results. The first record made in a "real" studio and the first done with an outside producer (MOR hotshot Marius De Vries), it's a nice improvement over 2002's lukewarm, sparsely electronicized New Day at Midnight. There's quite a bit of diversity afoot; "Hospital Food" begins with a sheen of '80s-cheese keyboards, while "Alibi" has an orchestral pop arrangement that brings to mind Rufus Wainwright collaborating with Jeff Lynne (and yes, that's a good thing). The album's title seems to refer as much to the fact that the album took three years to appear as the way the songs unfold glacially. With his band really fortifying him throughout, parts sound like Coldplay unplugged. But where that band's lyrics start with self-doubt and burrow inwards from there, Gray seeks absolution, something beyond himself. He also seems to have a sense of humor. It's too bad Six Feet Under is off the air; this entire album would make a great soundtrack for a special episode. Slow Motion is, in its subtle way, a huge step: the blue eyed folk-soul singer's first truly stadium-ready album. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:

A great voice with songwriting to back it up.......2007-07-07
The album starts off with a bang on "Stolen Cars" one of the albums best songs. It features an insanely catchy chorus showcases Carina's use of hard/soft dynamics. This song is followed by the still upbeat "How Many Times" which is another great song. After that is "Gravity Lies" and "Ready to Confess" which still keep the energy up. While "Gravity" one the best songs lyrically here goes back to the loud/soft dynamic, "Ready to Confess" is just an all out rocker. This followed by one of my favorites, "I Want More" it is a fun, well written song. It begins with one of the best lines on the album:"It's not me/I'm representing someone who died during the conversation" The vocals are very emotional here.
Track #6 is an album highlight. "Take the Money" is a sarcastic examination of the music industry and selling out. A very catchy, clever , well written song.
After this the album slows down a little. "Down Slow" is a good enough song but doesn't stick out like all the other songs. However, it is followed by the remarkable "Come to You" Carina's voice on the choruses just soars, and the multi tracking on the verses just makes for a beautiful song. A real pleasure to listen to. The title track is next, and is another great song, well sung, eventually fading into two minutes plus of lovely guitar drone. Instrumentally, this song is one of the more impressive here.
"January Heart" is a gorgeous slow ballad, followed by another,"The Disconnection", which was the title of her second album. The strings on this track make it stand out, but it is overshadowed by the two tracks surrounding it. Closing everything out is the masterful, slowly building "The City" which culminates in Multi-tracking of Carina's voice singing us out. It's a beautiful sound.
Overall, this album puts other female singer-songwriters and singer-songwriters in general to shame. Carina's voice is a thing of beauty that deserves to be heard by all. Normally I don't like when the faster and slower material is separated so clearly as it is on this album but in this case it works well. I would highly recommend this to pop music fans, singer-songwriter fans, or just fans of good music in general. No doubt will rate as one of 2007's best albums.

Customer Reviews:
Somewhat grim.......2007-05-26
The title track Slow Train is a messy mid-tempo rock excursion infused with gospel backing vocals, certainly not the strongest offering on the album. Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking is a similarly downtempo rock number but with some nice organ flourishes, unfortunately a bit harsh in both sentiment and in sound.
The jerkily rhythmic Do Right To Me Baby is a pleasant enough rumination on the golden rule with some clever lyrical twists, whilst the meandering When You Gonna Wake Up is a call to repentence I suppose, but not particularly tuneful or memorable. The next one, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, is lighter and quite appealing with its gently lilting beat.
The album concludes with the stirring devotional When He Returns. One would have expected more of the Van Morrison type of mystical joyousness, but this album is often grim and uncompromising. Mercifully the aforementioned songs like Precious Angel, I Believe In You and When He Returns are lovely and comforting.
Of Dylan's religious albums, I think Shot of Love with its gems like Every Grain Of Sand and Lenny Bruce, and Infidels with tracks like Neighbourhood Bully and Jokerman are the best. Slow Train Coming is not bad at all but not an album that I often listen to. The thought of how it must have shocked the rock critics when it was released is however cause for mirth.

HEY, AMERICA! "WHEN YOU GONNA WAKE UP?".......2007-02-12
GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY, the first song on BOB DYLAN's 1979 Gospel offering, SLOW TRAIN COMING, begins with a metronome-like pounding on Pick Wither's drum. This single, regular beat gives the astute listener the impression of a hammer striking a railroad tie. In other words, this is the slowly built, but inexorably advancing train track that, once fully constructed, will make a Way for the arrival of a massive, powerful, and unstoppable Divine Force.
"The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God." (Isaiah 40:3; circa 740 - 701 B.C.)
"Then they said to [John the Baptist] ... What do you say about yourself? He said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the Way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said." (John 1:23; circa 80 - 93 A.D.)
Just as John the Baptist was commissioned to prepare the Way for the first incarnation of Jesus - who came as a meek lamb of Salvation - it is "Christians" whose duty it is to prepare the Way for His second coming, which will be anything but meek, and which will come so suddenly, so unexpectedly, and with such force that the many dark-hearted will find their dark hearts fainting with fright. SLOW TRAIN COMING by Bob Dylan is both a warning and a celebration - a locomotive's whistle.
Unlike so much contemporary Christian music which seems to whine n wheeze, this collection includes some real arse-kickin', toe-stompin', and finger-pointing tracks. Buoyed by the unique musical contributions of Mark Knopfler and Pick Withers of Dire Straits, the Muscle Shoals Horns Section, and Barry Beckett with his fiery organ, the arrangements spell trouble for anyone who comes looking for another "Oh, La, La, La" Gospel album. And the lyrics clearly display the familiarity that Ol' Bob had gained with The Word Of God. I recall an interview Zimmy did with some music rag journalist not long after the release of SLOW TRAIN COMING (it was probably Rolling Stoned magazine). The writer asked Bob what his favorite part of The Bible was and he answered "Leviticus." The journalist dutifully recorded it, never realizing that Bob was obviously pulling the old dog's leg. But then Rolling Stoned writers have undoubtedly spent more time in the pages of the Communist Manifesto than they have in The Word Of God. (Despite his almost inestimable influence on modern music, I've never been a big Dylan fan, but I've always loved his smart aleck nature. Gotta love them Mensa-donkeys.)
SLOW TRAIN COMING is not without its weaknesses: I BELIEVE IN YOU has probably the most atrocious singing I have ever heard from a professional singer. If I didn't know better, I'd think that Bob was deliberately making a mockery of the song. The Reggae-influenced MAN GAVE NAMES TO ALL THE ANIMALS is too long a piece to go without any musical break or tempo change. And the lyrics are overworked and sometimes too downright silly ("Great big furry back and furry hair"?!) to make the surprise payoff at the end worth the wait. And the slow closer, WHEN HE RETURNS, despite some heartfelt lyrics, kind of peters out (like Saint Peter at the trial of Jesus) on what is otherwise a really good record.
GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY; PRECIOUS ANGEL; and DO RIGHT TO ME, BABY are all solid, but SLOW TRAIN; GONNA CHANGE MY WAY OF THINKING; and WHEN YOU GONNA WAKE UP? all kick some serious heathen b*tt! These are "Play-em-Loud-And-Disturb-The-Devil" cuts!
And Ol' Zimmy really knew the score:
"Sister, lemme tell you about a vision I saw.
You were drawing water for your husband, you were suffering under the law.
You were telling him about Buddha, you were telling him about Mohammad in the same breath.
You never one time mentioned the Man who came and died a criminal's death."
(~from Precious Angel)
"In the home of the brave, Jefferson's turnin' over in his grave ...
But the enemy I see wears a cloak of decency."
(~from Slow Train)
"God don't make no promises that He don't keep.
You got some big dreams, baby, but in order to dream you gotta still be asleep. ...
Counterfeit philosophies have polluted all your thoughts.
Karl Marx has got ya by the throat, Henry Kissinger's got you tied up in knots. ...
You got unrighteous doctors dealing drugs that'll never cure your ills.
When you gonna wake up? ...
Adulterers in churches and pornography in the schools,
You got gangsters in power and lawbreakers making rules. ...
Do you ever wonder just what God requires?
You think He's an errand boy to satisfy your wandering desires."
(~from When You Gonna Wake Up?)
"Jesus said, Be ready,
For you know not the hour in which I come.
Jesus said, Be ready,
For you know not the hour in which I come.
He said, He who is not for Me is against me.
Just so you know where He's coming from."
(~from Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking)

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
This nine-piece Montreal collective sketches large-scale sonic landscapes using everything from strings to samples. Exceedingly plush and atmospheric, Slow Riot funnels a dramatic undercurrent through their music, adding an undeniably cinematic quality--especially in a section featuring the paranoid rants of a street person. The result is a grand and swirling melange with a sweeping scope and an elevating sense of tension. --S. DudaAmazon.com
Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada may last only half an hour, but in that time it imparts an internal experience akin to that of watching a cast-of-thousands Hollywood epic. Godspeed You Black Emperor! are a Montreal-based nine-piece ensemble that uses massed strings, ringing electric guitars, and martial drums to evoke endless vistas and stir strong emotions. "Moya" opens with a solemn drone overlaid with resonant violin overtones, then builds to a crashing, unapologetically melodramatic climax. The CD's second (and final) selection, "Blaise Bailey Finegan III," is more ambitious. Like a director who grabs his audience's tear ducts with both fists, the group inserts field recordings of a ranting paranoiac between sweeping spaghetti-Western passages that rise to exhilarating multiple crescendos, then fall away to ghostly, echoed violins. --Bill MeyerCustomer Reviews:

Perhaps my favorite album yet written........2006-04-25
Godspeed YBE! seems to be classified as pretentious or self-indulgent more often than I'd prefer to see. My response to that? Who cares. Is the band's intent obvious? Without question. Attacking the current state of the world (musically) in all its missteps and overall anguish is not a difficult thing to do, in theory. Anyone with a brain (and perhaps a heart) can look around and witness the contrast between what Humanity has become, and what Humanity could be. What makes Godspeed YBE! so wonderful, however, is that they do it properly -- with intellect, sincerity, honesty, devestation, and a general sense of idealism that is so far from currently being met one can't help but be moved during the album's apt running time. They do it on such a large scale that it really defies description; very few pieces of modern music seem to be able to so perfectly capture the sort of existential emotions that are as large as Life itself. Here, we have them.
So really, where one might criticize Godspeed YBE!'s overall intention, I would merely say that it's done with such profundity that any real sense of self-indulgence is transcended because this is, in my opinion, selfless music. It's just a matter of perception. Like other great pieces of art, Godspeed YBE! is finding the utmost brilliance possible within an existence that doesn't come close to meeting it. Within the despair is a gleaming sense of hope that noone can take away from us. This is not depressing music -- it is empowering and cathartic.
"Slow Riot" proves to be my favorite Godspeed YBE! album because I believe here they mastered their formula, somewhat described above. Musically, it is mesmerizing. "Moya" is my favorite piece the band has ever written, and while "Blaise Bailey Finnegan III" isn't quite as memorable or pop-natured, it is easily the more evocatively constructed work. The band's previous album, "F#A# Infinity", was heavy but erratic, and never reached any sort of climax the way "Slow Riot" manages to. Likewise, "Lift Your Skinny Fists", while providing some moments of musical genius, is by-and-large a far less emotive and cerebral a work. "Yanqui Y.X.O.", quite frankly, just doesn't do it for me, and even more so than this album, finds its merit simply within what it's trying to convey opposed to a good deal of musical warrant.
I'm going off the deep end here but I just want to say that this album is close to me -- perhaps more so than any other. Godspeed YBE! might be my favorite band if only for this album -- as I said, their others, despite flashes of Godliness, are too flawed. The band's spin-off group, "A Silver Mt. Zion", fares better overall, and anyone who finds a home within Godspeed YBE!'s realm of music should go buy every one of SMZ's works. Nonetheless, this is a dreamy, romantic, introspective look at the world around us, and endlessly impresses me each time I listen to it.

John Hiatt was feeling strong after the success of 1987's masterstroke Bring the Family, so he rocked out a little more on the joyful, confident Slow Turning. His Louisiana quartet, the Goners, spearheaded by slide guitar innovator Sonny Landreth, made each hot tune ("Drive South," "Tennessee Plates") crack like a whip. Hiatt's rubbery soul singing, in turn, made each ballad ("Icy Blue Heart," "Is Anybody There?") tug at every available heartstring. The album became a bit of a hit factory for others, too--with Emmylou Harris, Suzy Bogguss, and Aaron Neville among the many who made Slow Turning's songs their own. This gold version of the title offers superior sound quality for a higher price than the standard-issue CD. --Michael RubyCustomer Reviews:

A good follow-up to Hiatt's best-ever release.......2003-07-30
The arrangements are variously acoustic and electric, and several guest stars pop up: Former Eagles guitarist Bernie Leadon plays his National resonator guitar, then-session vocalist Ashley Cleveland and Dennis Locorriere of Dr Hook contributes backing vocals, and the Amazing Rhythm Aces' James Hooker sits in on organ.
Highlights include the tough rockers "Paper Thin" and "Tennessee Plates", the resigned, unsentimental ballad "Icy Blue Heart", the country-rock shuffle "Sometime Other Than Now", the tender love song "Feels Like Rain", and the excellent title track.
John Hiatt's 1987 album "Bring The Family" is without question his best ever, not least because he was able to work with his dream band (Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner and Nick Lowe).
But "Slow Turning" is no throwaway either. Not everything is equally memorable, sure, but it is still among Hiatt's better albums.
3½ stars.
Rock and Roll For Grownups.......2003-06-22
John Hiatt writes about real life. There are no sappy teenage love songs, but there is a great song, "Drive South," about two lovers with "heads in the clouds, just a little off-course" and one more chance to make it work.
"Trudy and Dave" aren't your average couple, but their descriptions (and the baby's) are laugh-out-loud funny. "Tennessee Plates" has a great, catchy guitar riff and an even better storyline: a lonely, desperate man; a female Elvis fan who's "been living in-between" and a car theft in Memphis.
"Georgia Rae" is a song about Hiatt's daughter and fits in well with everything else here. The title song is Hiatt's view of the world: unbowed, but realistic. "Is Anybody There?" will put chills down your spine with its mass choir effect and deep lyrics. "Feels Like Rain" paints a beautiful, languid picture of lovers in the Deep South and the music fits as perfectly as the lovers do.
If you like meaningful lyrics, melodies that linger in your head and you still don't have this CD, then you need to do something about it right now. You won't believe how great this is.

Under Cold Blue Stars, the third album from native Nebraskan Josh Rouse, is full of elegant, melodic pop songs that are deftly understated but carry hooks as catchy as Coldplay's (whose music the opening song, "Twilight," uncannily evokes). This is music for folk in love with Americana and timeless pop; it's a gentle hinterland of melancholy and hope. The loose concept behind Under Cold Blue Stars is that of a fractious couple in the late 1950s, trying to come to terms with their lives and relationship. "Christmas with Jesus" is an unashamedly beautiful realization of their struggles, as is the upbeat title track, which touches on sources as diverse as Nils Lofgren, the Cure, and even Bruce Springsteen (albeit, a Springsteen shorn of all pride and aggrandizement). All this adds up to make Under Cold Blue Stars rather special. --Everett TrueCustomer Reviews:
Seek no more... Josh Rouse is it.......2005-09-13
Some claim Rouse has a sound that reminds of Coldplay. I think this is a very shortsighted description of his music. His poetic and musical palette flirt with your imagination transporting you to the places that his songs visit, whether they are a dark country road late at night "under cold blue stars" or a bright and upbeat evening under the lights of a downtown. If you are seriously searching for a blend of folk and country with a pop touch, stay away from Jack Johnson. Rouse's unique art is what you are looking for. If you want to listen to more music like his, try Joseph Arthur and Paul Brill.

Nebraska-born Josh Rouse calls Nashville, Tennessee, home. And now, after writing songs for the follow-up to his intimate 1998 debut (Dressed Up Like Nebraska) from the confines of his living-room couch, the twentysomething singer-songwriter decided "Home" would be a fitting title here. Backed by a cache of cello, violin, horns, vibes, and Wurlitzer, Home delivers a newfangled punch without jumbling the simplicity and gentleness that was the first record's charm. Rouse's sentiments, emotions, and melancholy drift more on the folk or country side of songwriting. But his pleasant, whispery vocals and hook-filled melodies--especially on "Hey Porcupine," "Afraid to Fail," and "Marvin Gaye"--convey more of a pop spirit. --Scott HolterCustomer Reviews:

I found Josh Rouse while watching the beautiful Vanilla Sky, I heard Directions and had to find it. Little did I know I would soon have 3 new Josh Rouse CDs. And Home is definitely my favorite. The songs speak to me and Im sure to many other people.
As I get a little older, my musical tendencies continue to change. I got hooked on the "alt-country" scene with Whiskeytown a while back after a long love affair with the Doors classic, poetic rock and my long time mistress, techno-house music. This is just a damn fine CD that has the ability to catch anyones ear and keep it listening. Im pretty much all over the map in my musical tastes lately, but Josh Rouse deserves a listen from everyone. The songs speak of love lost and found and lost again, and make you believe that just maybe love does have a chance and that we are addicted to it no matter what it does to us
every track has a insanely irresistable lyric, riff or hook. its useless to fight the desire to hear them again. Standout tracks are definitely Directions, with its amazing changes in pace from relaxed beat building with each chorus. you cant help but follow Josh in the Direction hes going to.
Marvin Gaye is just a great track that lazes along with the ease of a beach vacation, asking to let the sun shine in and make love a reality.
And Around slows down with a cowboy bar elegance and drifts in the air around you. lamenting, but always hoping another chance is around.
anyone can relate to these songs and I doubt no one could resist their catchiness.
Trumping "Nebraska".......2002-12-14
The album kicks off with a triple threat of excellent tracks, "Laughter," "Marvin Gaye" and "Directions," that all contain sweet pop melodies and strong hooks. The rest of the material is not quite up to that standard, but "In Between," "Afraid to Fail," and the horn-laden ballad "Little Know it All," that closes the record are all first rate. At only ten tracks and under 40 minutes, the album is short by today's standards, but still sweet.
Overall, a strong sophomore effort from an unfortunately largely overlooked American songwriter.
