On his seventh album (and first for Dave Matthews' ATO label), David Gray refines his sonic palette with wonderful results. The first record made in a "real" studio and the first done with an outside producer (MOR hotshot Marius De Vries), it's a nice improvement over 2002's lukewarm, sparsely electronicized New Day at Midnight. There's quite a bit of diversity afoot; "Hospital Food" begins with a sheen of '80s-cheese keyboards, while "Alibi" has an orchestral pop arrangement that brings to mind Rufus Wainwright collaborating with Jeff Lynne (and yes, that's a good thing). The album's title seems to refer as much to the fact that the album took three years to appear as the way the songs unfold glacially. With his band really fortifying him throughout, parts sound like Coldplay unplugged. But where that band's lyrics start with self-doubt and burrow inwards from there, Gray seeks absolution, something beyond himself. He also seems to have a sense of humor. It's too bad Six Feet Under is off the air; this entire album would make a great soundtrack for a special episode. Slow Motion is, in its subtle way, a huge step: the blue eyed folk-soul singer's first truly stadium-ready album. --Mike McGonigal

3 out of 5 stars No, no, no, no, no.......2007-06-12

Why, please someone tell me, would one of the best guitarists on the scene keep turning out mediocre piano tunes? I would lead David away from the keyboard and then smash the danged thing to smithereens. Then I would hand him a guitar and return to the audience. I mean, would you go see Richard Thompson if you knew he was going to play piano? Or Tony Levin play French Horn? Come on David, knock us out with six strings. Leave the ivory keys to Chris Martin. And the sea thing? We didn't like Christopher Cross when he did it. Why would we like it any more now? Now do what I say, David, and play son, play!

5 out of 5 stars I'm in love with David Gray..........2007-05-23

If anyone can sound hot on their album, it would have to be David Gray. Cadence, gritty tone, deliberate phrasing of each line-- you can really FEEL what he's singing. This album (from what I understand) is heavier instrumentally, and has an orchestral sound. In my opinion, a beautiful accompaniment to Gray's voice, which can stand prefectly stand alone as well. A must buy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Captivating Sound.......2007-05-21

Enjoyed the passion of the songs and the powerful music. Lyrics are interesting. What David writes about his lyrics and his new style of music was interesting. Just a good, emotionally moving, but mellow compilation of songs that may cause you to pause and think.

Seeing the lyrics were helpful, because his enunciation is not good at all times. I fell asleep while watching TV and the title song "Life in Slow Motion" was playing on an "ER" episode and the melody and passion behind the lyrics awoke me from my sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-05-19

I love this CD and every song that is on the CD!! David Gray is not sold at Target stores in my area. To find the time to track a Borders or a Barnes and Knoble that sells CD's is too much of my time wasted in my day. So I went to Amazon.com and ordered the CD on a Thursday night. I selected standard shipping and received my CD on Monday. I am planning on purchasing more of his CD's and will do so on Amazon.com.

5 out of 5 stars I cannot believe how good this is.......2006-12-27

This CD is addictive, I also bought others from David, nothing, and I mean nothing, comes close to this masterpiece. Listen at least twice and then you are hooked, I was humming in the shower without knowing it..this is an awesome cd, right now, my favorite...wow what a find...if you enjoy music, you should love this!!!

Don't buy his old stuff, David, we are waiting for your NEXT

5 out of 5 stars A great voice with songwriting to back it up.......2007-07-07

Slow Motion Addict, Carina Round's third album and second for Interscope, was my introduction to this great voice. Carina has a talent for writing catchy yet dark pop songs that stick in your head for days, as is evidenced with this album.
The album starts off with a bang on "Stolen Cars" one of the albums best songs. It features an insanely catchy chorus showcases Carina's use of hard/soft dynamics. This song is followed by the still upbeat "How Many Times" which is another great song. After that is "Gravity Lies" and "Ready to Confess" which still keep the energy up. While "Gravity" one the best songs lyrically here goes back to the loud/soft dynamic, "Ready to Confess" is just an all out rocker. This followed by one of my favorites, "I Want More" it is a fun, well written song. It begins with one of the best lines on the album:"It's not me/I'm representing someone who died during the conversation" The vocals are very emotional here.
Track #6 is an album highlight. "Take the Money" is a sarcastic examination of the music industry and selling out. A very catchy, clever , well written song.
After this the album slows down a little. "Down Slow" is a good enough song but doesn't stick out like all the other songs. However, it is followed by the remarkable "Come to You" Carina's voice on the choruses just soars, and the multi tracking on the verses just makes for a beautiful song. A real pleasure to listen to. The title track is next, and is another great song, well sung, eventually fading into two minutes plus of lovely guitar drone. Instrumentally, this song is one of the more impressive here.
"January Heart" is a gorgeous slow ballad, followed by another,"The Disconnection", which was the title of her second album. The strings on this track make it stand out, but it is overshadowed by the two tracks surrounding it. Closing everything out is the masterful, slowly building "The City" which culminates in Multi-tracking of Carina's voice singing us out. It's a beautiful sound.
Overall, this album puts other female singer-songwriters and singer-songwriters in general to shame. Carina's voice is a thing of beauty that deserves to be heard by all. Normally I don't like when the faster and slower material is separated so clearly as it is on this album but in this case it works well. I would highly recommend this to pop music fans, singer-songwriter fans, or just fans of good music in general. No doubt will rate as one of 2007's best albums.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Somewhat grim.......2007-05-26

This notorious album opens with Gotta Serve Somebody, a slow edgy number with prominent female vocals in a genuine gospel style, whilst Precious Angel is a tuneful folky track. One of the most moving songs is I Believe In You, a description of the rejection often experienced by those who openly confess their faith, expressed in stirring poetic lyrics over a lovely melody line.

The title track Slow Train is a messy mid-tempo rock excursion infused with gospel backing vocals, certainly not the strongest offering on the album. Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking is a similarly downtempo rock number but with some nice organ flourishes, unfortunately a bit harsh in both sentiment and in sound.

The jerkily rhythmic Do Right To Me Baby is a pleasant enough rumination on the golden rule with some clever lyrical twists, whilst the meandering When You Gonna Wake Up is a call to repentence I suppose, but not particularly tuneful or memorable. The next one, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, is lighter and quite appealing with its gently lilting beat.

The album concludes with the stirring devotional When He Returns. One would have expected more of the Van Morrison type of mystical joyousness, but this album is often grim and uncompromising. Mercifully the aforementioned songs like Precious Angel, I Believe In You and When He Returns are lovely and comforting.

Of Dylan's religious albums, I think Shot of Love with its gems like Every Grain Of Sand and Lenny Bruce, and Infidels with tracks like Neighbourhood Bully and Jokerman are the best. Slow Train Coming is not bad at all but not an album that I often listen to. The thought of how it must have shocked the rock critics when it was released is however cause for mirth.

3 out of 5 stars Jesus as mind-numbing drug.......2007-03-02

I do like the music on this album, but am so glad Dylan is over the Jesus thang.

Musically there are better Dylan albums but this one is a solid 3 stars.

4 out of 5 stars HEY, AMERICA! "WHEN YOU GONNA WAKE UP?".......2007-02-12

GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY, the first song on BOB DYLAN's 1979 Gospel offering, SLOW TRAIN COMING, begins with a metronome-like pounding on Pick Wither's drum. This single, regular beat gives the astute listener the impression of a hammer striking a railroad tie. In other words, this is the slowly built, but inexorably advancing train track that, once fully constructed, will make a Way for the arrival of a massive, powerful, and unstoppable Divine Force.

"The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God." (Isaiah 40:3; circa 740 - 701 B.C.)

"Then they said to [John the Baptist] ... What do you say about yourself? He said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the Way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said." (John 1:23; circa 80 - 93 A.D.)

Just as John the Baptist was commissioned to prepare the Way for the first incarnation of Jesus - who came as a meek lamb of Salvation - it is "Christians" whose duty it is to prepare the Way for His second coming, which will be anything but meek, and which will come so suddenly, so unexpectedly, and with such force that the many dark-hearted will find their dark hearts fainting with fright. SLOW TRAIN COMING by Bob Dylan is both a warning and a celebration - a locomotive's whistle.

Unlike so much contemporary Christian music which seems to whine n wheeze, this collection includes some real arse-kickin', toe-stompin', and finger-pointing tracks. Buoyed by the unique musical contributions of Mark Knopfler and Pick Withers of Dire Straits, the Muscle Shoals Horns Section, and Barry Beckett with his fiery organ, the arrangements spell trouble for anyone who comes looking for another "Oh, La, La, La" Gospel album. And the lyrics clearly display the familiarity that Ol' Bob had gained with The Word Of God. I recall an interview Zimmy did with some music rag journalist not long after the release of SLOW TRAIN COMING (it was probably Rolling Stoned magazine). The writer asked Bob what his favorite part of The Bible was and he answered "Leviticus." The journalist dutifully recorded it, never realizing that Bob was obviously pulling the old dog's leg. But then Rolling Stoned writers have undoubtedly spent more time in the pages of the Communist Manifesto than they have in The Word Of God. (Despite his almost inestimable influence on modern music, I've never been a big Dylan fan, but I've always loved his smart aleck nature. Gotta love them Mensa-donkeys.)

SLOW TRAIN COMING is not without its weaknesses: I BELIEVE IN YOU has probably the most atrocious singing I have ever heard from a professional singer. If I didn't know better, I'd think that Bob was deliberately making a mockery of the song. The Reggae-influenced MAN GAVE NAMES TO ALL THE ANIMALS is too long a piece to go without any musical break or tempo change. And the lyrics are overworked and sometimes too downright silly ("Great big furry back and furry hair"?!) to make the surprise payoff at the end worth the wait. And the slow closer, WHEN HE RETURNS, despite some heartfelt lyrics, kind of peters out (like Saint Peter at the trial of Jesus) on what is otherwise a really good record.

GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY; PRECIOUS ANGEL; and DO RIGHT TO ME, BABY are all solid, but SLOW TRAIN; GONNA CHANGE MY WAY OF THINKING; and WHEN YOU GONNA WAKE UP? all kick some serious heathen b*tt! These are "Play-em-Loud-And-Disturb-The-Devil" cuts!

And Ol' Zimmy really knew the score:

"Sister, lemme tell you about a vision I saw.
You were drawing water for your husband, you were suffering under the law.
You were telling him about Buddha, you were telling him about Mohammad in the same breath.
You never one time mentioned the Man who came and died a criminal's death."
(~from Precious Angel)

"In the home of the brave, Jefferson's turnin' over in his grave ...
But the enemy I see wears a cloak of decency."
(~from Slow Train)

"God don't make no promises that He don't keep.
You got some big dreams, baby, but in order to dream you gotta still be asleep. ...
Counterfeit philosophies have polluted all your thoughts.
Karl Marx has got ya by the throat, Henry Kissinger's got you tied up in knots. ...
You got unrighteous doctors dealing drugs that'll never cure your ills.
When you gonna wake up? ...
Adulterers in churches and pornography in the schools,
You got gangsters in power and lawbreakers making rules. ...
Do you ever wonder just what God requires?
You think He's an errand boy to satisfy your wandering desires."
(~from When You Gonna Wake Up?)

"Jesus said, Be ready,
For you know not the hour in which I come.
Jesus said, Be ready,
For you know not the hour in which I come.
He said, He who is not for Me is against me.
Just so you know where He's coming from."
(~from Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking)

Hey, America, it's time to turn off your television and study The Book, because there's a Train coming; it may seem slow, but it IS coming ..... and sooner than you know.

Can't Slow Down is probably Lionel Richie's best solo album, full of songs that would become hits--"All Night Long (All Night)," "Running with the Night," "Penny Lover," and "Hello." Like all of Richie's best music, the vocals are spare and the choruses inviting, with each track falling somewhere between straight-up pop and smoochy R&B. --Courtney Kemp

can;t slow down is a motown classic from the '80s. it has the hit songs allnight long, hello, penny lover stuck on you,and running with the night. the only one and love will find a way are good songs too. why don't you dig out your old copy of this album and listen to it again? oryou can buy it on cd. you will love it all over again. ed wilson

4 out of 5 stars Good for an 80's album........2007-03-25

The volume is a little low, but all the songs are great nonetheless. I am really in love with track number 6 "the only one" followed by penny lover. Those two are my all time favorites!

5 out of 5 stars No Need To Slow Down.......2007-02-10

Lionel Richie ex. Commodores had archieved great success with his eponumous debut album in 1982 and even experienced two solo #1 hits, "Endless Love" a duet with Diana Ross (which didn't appear on his debut) and then "Truly". There was no need to slow down at all and the year after this fantastic album was released. Lionel continues with the same kind of music, but now he does it better and smarter then ever. This album is well calculated with a great production and all singles seems to be exactly on point with good hooks and arrangements. Even if it's calculated to work for the charts, there are a few diffrent numbers here that shows a new side of Richies music., I'm talking about the Countryish "Stuck on You", the mega hit "All Night Long" with world Beat sound, simular to what Michael Jackson did on "Wanna Be Starting Something" and Madonna later did on "La Isla Bonita". Exotic pop songs that didn't sound like anything else on the charts at the time. The song topped the Billboard charts in 1983. The third song that comes to mind is the rock-pop hit "Running With the Night", not as edgy as MJ but not far from. Two more fantastic songs should be mentioned as highlights "Penny Lover" a midtempo love song and obviously the massive ballad hit "Hello" with a blind girl in the video. It topped both charts of the atlantic and was one of the biggest hits of that year. "Can't Slow Down" is a decent midtempo with great arrangements but lacks a good hook and was no single. Neither were the dry ballad "Love Will Find A Way" nor "The Only One" another ballad. Out of only 8 songs 5 were hits, which is quite amazing. Just like another reviewer mentioned, This is probably the best Pop album of 1983 and it made Lionel Richie a superstar. It got something for everyone and it's fullpacked with memorable hits that rocked the music charts in the early 80's. Just like the previous album Lionel also wrote all songs. Unfortunately some of the songs are too long. "All Night Long" really is all night, since it's 6.30 minutes and goes on forever. Shorting down some of the songs and adding a few more would have been better then having songs that never ends. However, this album shows Lionel at his peak when everything he made was a hit and I warmly recommend this to people that like good music and want a classic pop album in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars lionel will always be a classic artist to me.......2007-01-05

I was born in spring 1983 and by the time I was a year or two old I discovered lionel's songs all night long, hello & penny love thanks to my parents playing them. This is a great album to own. It's short and sweet, and as one reviewer stated, THE PERFECT answer to Thriller, which is also great to play back to back with this album.

4 out of 5 stars "The only one": Great song!.......2006-11-10

"The only one" is one of my favorite songs of all time. "All night long" and "Stuck on you" are really gorgeous. But I can't stand "Hello", it's too silly!

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

This nine-piece Montreal collective sketches large-scale sonic landscapes using everything from strings to samples. Exceedingly plush and atmospheric, Slow Riot funnels a dramatic undercurrent through their music, adding an undeniably cinematic quality--especially in a section featuring the paranoid rants of a street person. The result is a grand and swirling melange with a sweeping scope and an elevating sense of tension. --S. Duda

Amazon.com

Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada may last only half an hour, but in that time it imparts an internal experience akin to that of watching a cast-of-thousands Hollywood epic. Godspeed You Black Emperor! are a Montreal-based nine-piece ensemble that uses massed strings, ringing electric guitars, and martial drums to evoke endless vistas and stir strong emotions. "Moya" opens with a solemn drone overlaid with resonant violin overtones, then builds to a crashing, unapologetically melodramatic climax. The CD's second (and final) selection, "Blaise Bailey Finegan III," is more ambitious. Like a director who grabs his audience's tear ducts with both fists, the group inserts field recordings of a ranting paranoiac between sweeping spaghetti-Western passages that rise to exhilarating multiple crescendos, then fall away to ghostly, echoed violins. --Bill Meyer

5 out of 5 stars sombre tones.......2007-05-14

the first godspeed album (if they can be so descibed) i was exposed to was "raise your skinny fists like antennas to heaven" which literally blew me away. the band never appears to be in any rush, your mind wanders and then suddenly you find yourself in a world devoid of sanity. and as quickly as it came it drops off. the great thing about godspeed is that no one is singing pissy lyrics, the band knows thier strenghs and play to them. "slow riot" does not let down. its short but fulfilling. the highlight is blaise blaiseys apoliptic poem about the shortcomings of peedsamerican constitutionalism set aginst the various wailings of godspeeds noises. the story about parking tickets is also intriging, if somewhat similar to the sample on djshadows introducing..... anyway if you like godspeed, buy it. if you have a nervous disposition and are liable to be induced into insanity by your surroundings, buy it aswell and watch the fireworks

5 out of 5 stars rebuttal to those who feel it is unpatriotic........2006-06-08

Okay, we all know Godspeed is liberal and in opposition to a lot of our and canada's political ideas, however BBF3 is not anti-American, it is about gun-control. The piece is about the combination of anger and a loose grip on reality. The political aspect is the realization that such a person could possibly have the arsenol he descirbes. His hatred for the American government is not the band's stance, it's used to provide a soundtrack to desperation, anger, and helplessness. And this song, broken into two parts, is amazing in it's ability to convey such emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps my favorite album yet written........2006-04-25

Can't say enough. This is a masterpiece, pure and simple. I'm a fan of the "post-rock" genre; Explosions, Mogwai, Do Make Say Think, etc. In my opinion -- these bands, though I love them deeply in my heart, just can't morph into the plane Godspeed YBE! often reaches. Well, that isn't entirely true; Mogwai, for example, CAN, but their problem is they never quite do it for an extended period of time. For 30 straight minutes, "Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada!" provides meditative, thought-provoking music that is at once indispensible for its musical prowess, but really, a masterwork because it manages to evoke an unprecedented amount of self-induced abstract thought.

Godspeed YBE! seems to be classified as pretentious or self-indulgent more often than I'd prefer to see. My response to that? Who cares. Is the band's intent obvious? Without question. Attacking the current state of the world (musically) in all its missteps and overall anguish is not a difficult thing to do, in theory. Anyone with a brain (and perhaps a heart) can look around and witness the contrast between what Humanity has become, and what Humanity could be. What makes Godspeed YBE! so wonderful, however, is that they do it properly -- with intellect, sincerity, honesty, devestation, and a general sense of idealism that is so far from currently being met one can't help but be moved during the album's apt running time. They do it on such a large scale that it really defies description; very few pieces of modern music seem to be able to so perfectly capture the sort of existential emotions that are as large as Life itself. Here, we have them.

So really, where one might criticize Godspeed YBE!'s overall intention, I would merely say that it's done with such profundity that any real sense of self-indulgence is transcended because this is, in my opinion, selfless music. It's just a matter of perception. Like other great pieces of art, Godspeed YBE! is finding the utmost brilliance possible within an existence that doesn't come close to meeting it. Within the despair is a gleaming sense of hope that noone can take away from us. This is not depressing music -- it is empowering and cathartic.

"Slow Riot" proves to be my favorite Godspeed YBE! album because I believe here they mastered their formula, somewhat described above. Musically, it is mesmerizing. "Moya" is my favorite piece the band has ever written, and while "Blaise Bailey Finnegan III" isn't quite as memorable or pop-natured, it is easily the more evocatively constructed work. The band's previous album, "F#A# Infinity", was heavy but erratic, and never reached any sort of climax the way "Slow Riot" manages to. Likewise, "Lift Your Skinny Fists", while providing some moments of musical genius, is by-and-large a far less emotive and cerebral a work. "Yanqui Y.X.O.", quite frankly, just doesn't do it for me, and even more so than this album, finds its merit simply within what it's trying to convey opposed to a good deal of musical warrant.

I'm going off the deep end here but I just want to say that this album is close to me -- perhaps more so than any other. Godspeed YBE! might be my favorite band if only for this album -- as I said, their others, despite flashes of Godliness, are too flawed. The band's spin-off group, "A Silver Mt. Zion", fares better overall, and anyone who finds a home within Godspeed YBE!'s realm of music should go buy every one of SMZ's works. Nonetheless, this is a dreamy, romantic, introspective look at the world around us, and endlessly impresses me each time I listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars essential doesn't begin to describe it.......2006-04-11

I have always thought, and still do to this very day, that "BBF3" is the most powerful piece of music ever recorded. It's like the depth and power of _Lift Your Skinny Fists_ and the absolute majesty and divinity of _Lateralus_ coalesced and condensed into a solitary 15-minute piece that defies the preconceptions of how deeply something as ubiquitous as music can affect the human spirit and forever alter the mindset of an individual. yeah, it's the best song ever.

5 out of 5 stars Best EP i've ever experienced.......2006-03-07

This EP has more depth than most bands full LP's. The music is as incredible as anything they have done, and with a total run time of 28 minutes, i dont feel like it is not worth bringing around with me (as i do with most EP's containing a few songs). One thing that i feel about the music is that i feel it is actually more fast paced when it comes to the build up than most of their records, which could be a goodthing or a bad thing (depending on what you like about GY!BE). True that the political speaking is intense and in many ways resemblant of a James Nichols rant, but i feel that it is just as extreme as the samples they have used on previous records. They usually use rough sounding people for their backgrounds, but i also saw it more as satire. But all that aside, the music on this record is phenomenal and truely worth the purchase. So make yourself happy, and buy this work of beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Will it Convert Me? Probably Not, but it's Still Awfully Good Music.......2006-09-04

Slow Train is an album that may be hard for some Dylan fans to get into, because of its Christian nature. I'm not a born again Christian, not even a very good church goer, so for the longest time I didn't pay this record any attention. I got in the giant hybrid box set. However, there are a couple songs, "I Believe in You" and "Precious Angel" where it's possible for me to believe Dylan is singing to or about a girl than the Deity. However, now, I must confess, that I play the whole CD, from start to finish, the music is just so good, Dylan's voice too. Will it convert me? Probably not, but it's still awfully good music.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Gospel Record.......2006-04-03

I can remember some of my friends saying, "Praise the Lord, Bob Dylan has seen the light!" Well, I don't know if he has, or had in this case, because it doesn't seem that he's the rabid born again Christian now that he was back when this record came out. But like it or not, and a lot of fans didn't, the man who sang "Desolation Row" was now singing about the Almighty and he was being backed up by Gospel singers. Horror of horrors. Still this is a darned good record. I play it a lot. In fact, though not an avid listener of Gospel music (Oh happy day), I'll bet as those kind of records go, that this is one of the best. Such is the magic of Bob Dylan. He puts it all out there and we follow. We can't help ourselves, his work is just so good, so important.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Very Good Record.......2006-04-03

A lot of Dylan fans had issues with "Slow Train," but I wasn't one of them. I liked this record right out of the box. I'm not the kind of Christian Dylan was when he recorded this, but I recognize good music when I hear it. I remember singing along with George every time "My Sweet Lord" came on the radio. Good music is good music and this record is jammed full of it. The title song is just about one of the best Dylan has ever done, musically and vocally. "I Believe in You" and "Precious Angel" are gems. This is a very good record and if you are a fan of Bob Dylan's, it's one you gotta own.

5 out of 5 stars Flumexed His Fans, Me Too, but I Came Around.......2006-04-03

As the Seventies drew to a close Bob Dylan again changed direction. He'd been a protest balladeer, a poet, a rocker, a torch song singer and more, but now he was going in a direction that would flumex his fans. The man who once raged against the establishment was turning to God. But he did it with a record that just plain sounded great. Dire Straits on steroids, that's what "Slow Train" sounds like and certainly the credit for that goes to Mark Knoplfer's guitar. I found myself resisting this record at first, but Dylan just sounds so good on it that I find myself actually listening to it quite a bit.

5 out of 5 stars The Music Just Flows on this Controversial Album.......2006-04-03

Bob Dylan is certainly not unfamiliar with controversy. From his early protest period, to when he was booed for going electric, to his country period, all controversial, but perhaps none as controversial as his conversion to Christianity and his born again, Dire Straights sounding, pop rocker "Slow Train Coming" record. Surprisingly the album did well, considering the kind of fans he'd had and was seemingly turning away from with this record. Still, in the end, it's a Bob Dylan record and a good one at that, even if the lyrics are about, well let's face it, about God. I know that when I play "Precious Angel" I pretend he's singing to a girl, but down deep I really know better. The music, led by Mark Knoplfer's smooth guitar work just flows. Dylan's voice is about the best I've ever heard, except maybe on "Blood on the Tracks." He's clearly happy here, he's just isn't going in the direction I am here, still I do listen to this record a lot.

John Hiatt was feeling strong after the success of 1987's masterstroke Bring the Family, so he rocked out a little more on the joyful, confident Slow Turning. His Louisiana quartet, the Goners, spearheaded by slide guitar innovator Sonny Landreth, made each hot tune ("Drive South," "Tennessee Plates") crack like a whip. Hiatt's rubbery soul singing, in turn, made each ballad ("Icy Blue Heart," "Is Anybody There?") tug at every available heartstring. The album became a bit of a hit factory for others, too--with Emmylou Harris, Suzy Bogguss, and Aaron Neville among the many who made Slow Turning's songs their own. This gold version of the title offers superior sound quality for a higher price than the standard-issue CD. --Michael Ruby

every rock fan should have a minimum one title by John Hiatt from late 80'. He was strong and romantic, therefore fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars John Hiatt Slow Turning.......2007-01-06

I had worn out a tape cassette of this album years ago. And after having the mopey new boy guitar strummers played by my teen son in the house just had to get another copy. Great band. Lyrics that make me laugh out loud. Songs that tell stories clearly fiction and true to real adult life situations. And did I say great band?

5 out of 5 stars Buy it.......2006-12-17

I have over 500 albums/CDs (I realize there are people with thousands) and this is one of the five best that I own. It is unbelievably great.

4 out of 5 stars A good follow-up to Hiatt's best-ever release.......2003-07-30

"Slow Turning" is Hiatt's first collaboration with Louisiana trio The Goners, which includes slide guitarist Sonny Landreth.
The arrangements are variously acoustic and electric, and several guest stars pop up: Former Eagles guitarist Bernie Leadon plays his National resonator guitar, then-session vocalist Ashley Cleveland and Dennis Locorriere of Dr Hook contributes backing vocals, and the Amazing Rhythm Aces' James Hooker sits in on organ.

Highlights include the tough rockers "Paper Thin" and "Tennessee Plates", the resigned, unsentimental ballad "Icy Blue Heart", the country-rock shuffle "Sometime Other Than Now", the tender love song "Feels Like Rain", and the excellent title track.

John Hiatt's 1987 album "Bring The Family" is without question his best ever, not least because he was able to work with his dream band (Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner and Nick Lowe).
But "Slow Turning" is no throwaway either. Not everything is equally memorable, sure, but it is still among Hiatt's better albums.
3½ stars.

5 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll For Grownups.......2003-06-22

If you want to explore John Hiatt -- and you should -- start here. If you're a fan without this CD, what in the world are you waiting for? It just doesn't get a whole lot better than this.

John Hiatt writes about real life. There are no sappy teenage love songs, but there is a great song, "Drive South," about two lovers with "heads in the clouds, just a little off-course" and one more chance to make it work.

"Trudy and Dave" aren't your average couple, but their descriptions (and the baby's) are laugh-out-loud funny. "Tennessee Plates" has a great, catchy guitar riff and an even better storyline: a lonely, desperate man; a female Elvis fan who's "been living in-between" and a car theft in Memphis.

"Georgia Rae" is a song about Hiatt's daughter and fits in well with everything else here. The title song is Hiatt's view of the world: unbowed, but realistic. "Is Anybody There?" will put chills down your spine with its mass choir effect and deep lyrics. "Feels Like Rain" paints a beautiful, languid picture of lovers in the Deep South and the music fits as perfectly as the lovers do.

If you like meaningful lyrics, melodies that linger in your head and you still don't have this CD, then you need to do something about it right now. You won't believe how great this is.

Under Cold Blue Stars, the third album from native Nebraskan Josh Rouse, is full of elegant, melodic pop songs that are deftly understated but carry hooks as catchy as Coldplay's (whose music the opening song, "Twilight," uncannily evokes). This is music for folk in love with Americana and timeless pop; it's a gentle hinterland of melancholy and hope. The loose concept behind Under Cold Blue Stars is that of a fractious couple in the late 1950s, trying to come to terms with their lives and relationship. "Christmas with Jesus" is an unashamedly beautiful realization of their struggles, as is the upbeat title track, which touches on sources as diverse as Nils Lofgren, the Cure, and even Bruce Springsteen (albeit, a Springsteen shorn of all pride and aggrandizement). All this adds up to make Under Cold Blue Stars rather special. --Everett True

5 out of 5 stars Seek no more... Josh Rouse is it.......2005-09-13

If you feel that America has lacked a good singer-songwriter to fill in the shoes of the Bob Dylans and the Cat Stevens of the past, seek no more. With thought-out lyrics and a blend of alternative with bits of folk, pop and a country feel, Josh Rouse leaves an indelible mark in all his albums I have had the luck to listen to. But having also heard his productions "Nashville", "Home" and a good part of "1972", I feel confident when I say that "Under Cold Blue Stars" (2002) is perhaps his most solid production to date.

Some claim Rouse has a sound that reminds of Coldplay. I think this is a very shortsighted description of his music. His poetic and musical palette flirt with your imagination transporting you to the places that his songs visit, whether they are a dark country road late at night "under cold blue stars" or a bright and upbeat evening under the lights of a downtown. If you are seriously searching for a blend of folk and country with a pop touch, stay away from Jack Johnson. Rouse's unique art is what you are looking for. If you want to listen to more music like his, try Joseph Arthur and Paul Brill.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Album by an amazing performer..........2004-07-13

This is one of the most hypnotic alternative albums of the decade! I love this cd. There really are no words to describe how great the music is. The songs are all beautifully performed and the melodies are all intoxicating and catchy. I'm not usually a fan of male vocals but I love this album. Definetly one of the best cds I have ever owned.

5 out of 5 stars No question, one of the best.......2004-06-22

If you like heartfelt acoustic rock, this is the album for you. Josh's laid back, matter of fact voice blends perfectly with the funk rhythm on Under the Cold Blue Stars (think almost Remy Shand) and the moving Nothing Gives Me Pleasure. I can shut my eyes and imagine myself walking through Manhattan late in a January evening with the wind nipping at my face. Despite that, no matter what my mood is, there is something on this album that speaks to me each time I play it and the complex layers always keep me coming back to this album, time and again. You won't go wrong with this album, there's not a weak song on it.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2003-10-22

I first heard Josh Rousse on a Various Artists album, and this was the first Josh Rousse album I've purchased. I was dissipointed to find out that it wasn't much like the song of his that I heard (Laughter). The album itself is not bad, it has a easy-going, laid back feel, similar artists would be Jack Johnson and Duncan Sheik. The tracks mold together, giving it a somwhat bland feel to it, but overall worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening.......2003-06-17

Under Cold Blue Stars is one of my favorites. Josh Rouse has a talent for writing wonderful songs and he shines on this disc.
Every tune is a keeper...The highlights are:

2. Nothing Ever Gives Me Pleasure
3. Miracle
4. Christmas With Jesus
5. Under Cold Blue Stars
6. Ugly Stories
8. Ears To The Ground
10. Women And Men

7 Excellent songs out of 11 great songs. Not Bad.

Nebraska-born Josh Rouse calls Nashville, Tennessee, home. And now, after writing songs for the follow-up to his intimate 1998 debut (Dressed Up Like Nebraska) from the confines of his living-room couch, the twentysomething singer-songwriter decided "Home" would be a fitting title here. Backed by a cache of cello, violin, horns, vibes, and Wurlitzer, Home delivers a newfangled punch without jumbling the simplicity and gentleness that was the first record's charm. Rouse's sentiments, emotions, and melancholy drift more on the folk or country side of songwriting. But his pleasant, whispery vocals and hook-filled melodies--especially on "Hey Porcupine," "Afraid to Fail," and "Marvin Gaye"--convey more of a pop spirit. --Scott Holter

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Rouse vs. Adams.......2006-02-03

I commented in my previous review of "Nebraska" that the singer Rosh Rouse can most closely be compared to is Ryan Adams. Adam's music is ok and I never was a huge fan, but his music may be a bit more polished than Rouses'. Rouse writes some great guitar hooks and uses some horns, violin, some slide guitar, and a little piano that give his music it's alt-country feel. "Laughter," "Directions," and "Afraid to Fail" are catchy pop songs, while "Parts and Accessories," and "And Around" are two of the best slower numbers. This may be a little bit over-produced and is nothing revolutionary, but is a solid cd filled with good music. Worth a shot.

5 out of 5 stars Early and Good.......2005-01-05

Requires repeated listening. After hearing the entire album a few times you should appreciate just how good it is...

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2003-03-04

Josh Rouse's brand of alt pop blandness falls neatly into the singer songwriter schmaltz genre so popular with tired middle aged professionals who wistfully wonder where their youth went. Boring enough to be instantly forgettable once it has stopped playing but annoying enough to grate while playing, HOME has little to recommend it, the best song is probably `Directions' but it is definitely a tune you can do without. Advice for the eclectic buyer, never, never buy an album that contains a song with `porcupine' in the title, you'll save yourself some grief. Recommended for people who can't remember the names of bands they like.

5 out of 5 stars home is where I want to be.......2003-01-03

Hearing a CD like this makes you wonder why the radio plays what it does. Sure, theres some decent stuff on the radio, but theres rarely the talent like this that should be on the radio.
I found Josh Rouse while watching the beautiful Vanilla Sky, I heard Directions and had to find it. Little did I know I would soon have 3 new Josh Rouse CDs. And Home is definitely my favorite. The songs speak to me and Im sure to many other people.

As I get a little older, my musical tendencies continue to change. I got hooked on the "alt-country" scene with Whiskeytown a while back after a long love affair with the Doors classic, poetic rock and my long time mistress, techno-house music. This is just a damn fine CD that has the ability to catch anyones ear and keep it listening. Im pretty much all over the map in my musical tastes lately, but Josh Rouse deserves a listen from everyone. The songs speak of love lost and found and lost again, and make you believe that just maybe love does have a chance and that we are addicted to it no matter what it does to us

every track has a insanely irresistable lyric, riff or hook. its useless to fight the desire to hear them again. Standout tracks are definitely Directions, with its amazing changes in pace from relaxed beat building with each chorus. you cant help but follow Josh in the Direction hes going to.
Marvin Gaye is just a great track that lazes along with the ease of a beach vacation, asking to let the sun shine in and make love a reality.
And Around slows down with a cowboy bar elegance and drifts in the air around you. lamenting, but always hoping another chance is around.

anyone can relate to these songs and I doubt no one could resist their catchiness.

4 out of 5 stars Trumping "Nebraska".......2002-12-14

Roots rocker Josh Rouse made a giant creative leap between his debut album "Dressed Up Like Nebraska," and his sophomore effort, "Home." "Nebraska" was a relatively conventional rock album containing just enough twang to get Rouse labelled as "alternative country." With "Home," the rural trappings in Rouse's songwriting are gone and taking their place is a solid mainstream rock album of the kind that used to be hugely popular back in the 1970s.

The album kicks off with a triple threat of excellent tracks, "Laughter," "Marvin Gaye" and "Directions," that all contain sweet pop melodies and strong hooks. The rest of the material is not quite up to that standard, but "In Between," "Afraid to Fail," and the horn-laden ballad "Little Know it All," that closes the record are all first rate. At only ten tracks and under 40 minutes, the album is short by today's standards, but still sweet.

Overall, a strong sophomore effort from an unfortunately largely overlooked American songwriter.
