This flowingly well-sequenced collection of semi-acoustic tracks, some of which have a smoothly mainstream FM-radio feeling while others are more roots-oriented, is just the thing to unwind after a stressful workday or get the weekend off to an effervescent yet relaxed start. South African troubadour Vusi Mahlasela and Senegalese pop icon Diogal are heard to great effect, as are Congolese stars Faya Tess and Lokua Kanza, entwined in a lusciously Cuban-rumba-influenced duet. A lesser-known Cape Verdean songstress named Gabriela Mendes swings her way through a typically dance-like ditty and Dobet Gnahoré of Ivory Coast makes a similarly strong impression. A previously unreleased tune by Angelique Kidjo of Benin rounds the set out; every compilation should ideally offer something new, not just retreads, so this is definitely a good thing. Another important selling point: a portion of the proceeds from this album will be donated to Mercy Corps in support of their efforts to help victims of AIDS and the civil war in Darfur, and to Oxfam America and Oxfam Novib's "Make Trade Fair." --Christina Roden

Album Description

On Acoustic Africa, you'll discover gentle folk songs from Senegal, a protest song from South Africa, blues-tinged ballads from Mali and much more. The performers on this album are social activists, building awareness of the current conditions in Africa that affect the region and the world. They sing of love and faith, pain and oppression, and their ability to unite people.

Vusi Mahlasela is an active social commentator who often addresses issues of social and political significance in his homeland. His gripping lyrics and lovely melodies on "Basimanyana" demonstrate why Mahlasela is also a leading figure in the contemporary South African music scene.

One of Africa's most world-renowned performers, Habib Koité has shared the stage with some of the world's best-known artists. On the track "Baro," Koité's wistful vocals with swirling rhythms and intertwined harmonies demonstrate his distinctive sound. Koité's music video for "Wari" is a bonus enhancement on the CD, as well as one of Koité's best-loved songs.

Other artists of note include Diogal Sakho, Laye Sow, Angelique Kidjo, and Eneida Marta.

Later this fall Putumayo will translate the experience of the Acoustic Africa collection into a live performance setting, bringing together three of the African continent's most gifted singer-songwriters on one stage. The Putumayo Presents: Acoustic Africa Concert Tour featuring Acoustic Africa artists Habib Koité from Mali, Vusi Mahlasela from South Africa and Dobet Gnahoré from Ivory Coast will travel to more than 40 cities in North America and Europe, giving audiences a rare and unique opportunity to experience first-hand the dynamic performances of these truly enigmatic musicians.

A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of this CD will be donated to Mercy Corps in support of their efforts to help AIDS victims and the victims of the civil war in Darfur.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing acoustic African journey.......2007-02-06

The last time Putumayo specifically made an acoustic African album was 2001's great "African Odyssey." Five years later, they returned in strong form with "Acoustic Africa." This album is a musical safari, journeying through the soothing acoustic sounds of Senegal,Madagascar&Cape Verde.

Diogal's "Sore" is a powerful lament opening the album, describing the plight of immigrants.Eneida Marta, from Guinea-Bissau,harmoniously encourages women to the accompaniment of the kora (African harp),calabash (gourd)&Western harp.Rajery, from Madagascar, accompanies himself powerfully on the valiha (bamboo harp);his song echoes the Indonesian roots of the Malagasy people--it blends African&Asian harmonies.Angelique Kidjo's "Sedjedo" is rousing&anthemic. If it weren't acoustic,it would be a power ballad.Laye Sow's "Mauritania" is a touching plea for peace.Gabriela Mendes' "Tradicao" is stately,a Cape Verdean morna that is almost a waltz.Habib Koite's "Baro" is a quiet love song.Manecas Costa's "Antonia" is a moving tribute to a woman in Berkeley who gave him a place to stay during one of his tours.

It's too bad I wasn't able to see the Acoustic Africa concert when it came to my town. However, when I drove back from work,I think I saw the dreadlocked Habib Koite in the upstairs green room of the local opera house.

"Acoustic Africa" is yet another astounding African compilation from Putumayo. If you enjoy acoustic or African music, this is perfect!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation .......2007-01-20

I picked this up on a whim at my local CD shop. Not all Putumayo compilations are as good - this one has a consistent feel and excellent tracks. What made it really worth it for me was the discovery of artists I didn't know. Alongside big names like Angelique Kidjo and Faya Tess, there was the beautiful voice of Dobet Gnahore from the Cote d'Ivoire, Gabriela Mendes from Cabo Verde and two artists from Guinea-Bissau I'd like to hear more from.

5 out of 5 stars Great music that lets you feel Africa's spirit.......2007-01-15

A must if you are to feel Africa's music roots from an acoustic point of view. Regardless when you listen this cd, the music flows easily on you.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2007-01-10

This CD is great - once again, the folks at Putamayo have pulled together an outstanding collection and have done and excellent job of producing it.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening.......2006-11-04

This disc will appeal not only to the dedicated world music afficianado, but will serve as a splendid introduction for the novice. I cannot recommend this highly enough.....in a collection of CDs that numbers in the thousands, this is truly a gem. Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars The Voice Transcendant.......2005-09-26

Only a listen to this incredible and sublime collection with convince noise-weary ears and world-heavy souls of the healing power of the human voice.

I would love to hear a collection of this type which featured the voices of African women like Angelique Kidjo and Miriam Makeba.

Get it. You'll revisit it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Profound sound........2004-02-28

Ive had this album for four years, I still listen to it on A weekly basis and never tire of it.It's very soul stirring, the first of the songs kothbiro is the most haunting of all of them.Dala and ondiek are my next favourites.
It's a wonderful album to have when life gets very chaotic and busy,it stops you right in your tracks.Highly reccommended as an introduction to the very wide scope of african music.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting.......2004-01-25

I heard this CD when visiting Bogota. I walked into a gallery of the local artists and the music captured my soul. I was so moved by the melodies, I had to find out the title of the CD. The music is transcendent. My favorites are Kothbiro, Ondiek and Sutu Kun, and the invigorating, rythmic Ekbobo. But the best has to be the Wasuze Otya track with the laughter of the singers at the end of the track; you can sense their joy in their songs. The music is so uplifting and premeates with a positive feeling -- you can tell that the singers feel joy in living, and in life through the range of wonderful music; you want to go to their land, and be in their space. Wonderful!!! A must have!!!

Malian kora virtuoso Toumani Diabate, a collaborator in the Songhai and Kulanjan projects as well as the New Ancient Strings album, might just be the best player in the world on his 21-string, harplike instrument. Here, accompanied by Keletigui Diabate on balafon (a kind of xylophone) and Basekou Kouyate on ngoni, he tackles original and traditional material in beautiful fashion. Notes fall in rippling cascades from his fingers, whether on the dainty court song "Marielle" or the title track. The speed and dexterity of his playing, and of his ideas, is staggering, and his complete command of the instrument and its possibilities makes this album a joy. The trio arrangements give plenty of time to all players, although center stage is undoubtedly Toumani. While blissfully African, this is a record that transcends geography and ascends to the sublime. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.......2007-03-08

Mali is the source for a hell of a lot of great music and Toumani Diabate's is some of my favourite. It's just gorgeous: calm but complex, pleasant but not trite. Check the samples and if you like what you hear but wonder if the rest is as good, trust me, it is.

3 out of 5 stars Has its moments, but is easily surpassed elsewhere.......2003-03-13

This is a hit-and-miss disc. I asked for and received it for Christmas several years ago and still have yet to fall in love with it. The problem being, at least in my opinion, is that in places it displays too much Western influence. At times it feels like some sort of smooth acoustic instrumental Afro-pop. Whereas fellow Malian musicians such as Ali Farka Toure and Oumou Sangare are able to incorporate a bit of Western influence into their music (such as song forms, etc..) and still sound deeply Malian, Toumani is less successful at this. Whereas Ali Farka Toure, Oumou Sangare, and Afel Bocoum's best work sounds as if it may have crawled up out of the sand of the Sahel, much of this disc sounds as if it were orchestrated in a sterile music studio.

That's not to say this disc is without merit though. Track #7 is excellent and there are other good moments scattered throughout, but overall I feel there are much better albums out there both in terms of kora albums and Malian albums. On the other hand, it's impossible to take anything away from stunning ngoni player, Basekou Kouyate, on this album. Toumani is indeed one of the best kora players on the planet but still I don't feel that he compares favorably to, say, Guinean master Djeli Moussa Diawara. Plus alot of the material here is like I said. Too smooth. But Basekou is excellent throughout. If only he had been consistently allowed to play on tunes as perfect as Tony Vander (track #7).

5 out of 5 stars Jazz of the ancients.......2003-02-06

Yes, yes , yes, Toumani Diabate is an excellent kora player. But for me the reasons to listen to this album over and over again late at night as I write a new essay or story is the music's essentially jazzy nature -- still think jazz originated in America? Listen to this album. And then, of course, there is the extremely subtle vituosity of Keletigui Diabate on the balafon. The man is incredible! I saw him play with Habib Koite in Berkeley. Keletigui(say it real fast and you're probably almost pronouncing it right "KEH-LEH-ti-gwi") not only played incomparably excellent music on the balfon but also played a bit of violin (listen to him on Boubacar Traore's "Macire"). This album would not be nearly as good without his subtle skills on the balafon. Then, of course, there is a Kouyate playing the ngoni and Toumani on the kora...I could go on and on...

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous music from Mali.......2002-08-09

This album brings together three traditional Mali instruments; the kora (harp-lute), the balafon, a type of marimba or xylophone and the ngoni--a mandolin-like instrument with a flexible neck. The three virtuosi on this album are the kora master Toumani Diabate, Keletigui Diabete on balafon and Basekou Kouyate on the ngoni.

If you like "New Ancient Strings", something of a hit album in the World Music genre, you will be pleased with this offering. While the mix of instruments does not have the deep, hypnotic rocking style of the dual kora in "New Ancient Strings" the mix of the three traditional instruments is good to listen to. The music has a very traditional sound, yet is tuneful and completely accessible to any listener. The skirling harp riffs are shored up nicely by the "bones" of the balafon's wooden tonking, and the ngoni is fascinating--it's flexible neck produces half-tone notes like an ancient precursor of the bender or "whammy" bar on an electric guitar.

This music dates far, far back to the 13th Century kingdoms of Mali, and even before, when the kora was the hunter-harp. I wonder if King David's shepherd's harp didn't sound like the kora, and if the music to which the Psalms were sung sounded anything at all like this? We can only imagine about this, as music of the ancients is lost to us. But this sound is timeless, and I play my Toumani Diabate CD's over and over. They certainly speak to me and if the kora was the instrument David played to Saul, I can attest that it has tremendous powers to lighten the soul.

4 out of 5 stars contemplative virtuosity.......2002-08-07

Folk-music based intrumentals from Mali. This disk works as both foreground and background music: the mood is contemplative but the playing is extraordinarily demanding - so the listener can either listen "hard" and be astonished by kora-player Toumani Diabate's virtuosity, or one can lay back and just let the music flow over you. The disk's production values are not the best, but it just adds to the air of authenticity of three skilled musicians interacting in the moment without the intermediation of studio trickery.

3 out of 5 stars The first taste of a Madagascar acoustic guitar virtuoso.......2002-05-25

If you're a guitar player and into playing technique, add a fourth star. This guy is for real, and it's staggering to learn that until after this album was made, he had never owned a guitar of his own. When Henry Kaiser and David Lindley went to Madagascar with a digital recorder and recorded the "World Out of Time" albums, someone played them a tape of a guitarist who had adapted the styles used for traditional Madagascar instruments to the guitar, and played like a virtuoso despite only picking with his thumb and index finger. Dubbed "the monster guitarist from hell", D'Gary was coaxed to the capital city, Antananarivo, where during the two-week "World Out of Time" sessions, he recorded this entire album. It is all acoustic guitar and vocals, with some occasional percussion. His playing has a dream-like quality. My favorite track is "Anary Tany". This is a pretty good album, but unless you're REALLY into acoustic guitar, it's hard to call it compelling. It makes first-rate background music and would be a nice choice for relaxing late at night or using the computer headphones at work. If you're not a guitar player, I recommend you first see if you can get a hold of the "Horombe" album, which is more accessible, has better production and better songs, and provides D'Gary with a backing band and great harmonies.

5 out of 5 stars Cascading beauty.......2000-09-03

I should have reviewed this cd a long time ago, it deserves all the praise that has been bestowed upon it by previous reviewers.

I was recently at Allmusic.com and I decided to see if their reviews of this cd were similar to what mine would be if I wrote one. If I remember correctly they did praise it, but what I remember most is that they compared D'Gary to Ali Farka Toure. Aside from both men being brilliant, Black, and guitarists, there isn't much musical comparison. They play very different musics. I'd consider both men to be a book in their own right, not merely different chapters.

The only way I can begin to describe D'Gary's acoustic guitar playing is that it sounds and feels like a waterfall of love cascading over me. His playing ebbs and flows in waves of beauty. From both the songwriting and playing points of view, he really is a world treasure. He doesn't have the West African tribal-blues rhythms of Toure, and truth be told, D'Gary's music probably is more difficult for some Westerners to grasp than Toure's is, but if you are willing to let go of conventional ways of hearing and thinking about music then Malagasy Guitar will reward you endlessly.

5 out of 5 stars Hypnotic.......1999-03-04

I had to take it out of the CD player in my car for fear it would put me in a trance while driving. I encountered this CD in the Amazon.com interview with Bonnie Raitt who found it deep and profound. It results from a field trip to Madagascar taken by among others, David Lindley, who, I think, used to be a side man for Jackson Browne and others.

D'Gary uses 11 different guitar tunings and the liner notes state that even those musicians who watched him as he played could not replicate his music. The music is extraordinarily fascinating. I particularly recommend the 4th track.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Genius.......1998-09-22

D'Gary lives in a small village that's a good 11-hour walk from the closest highway, and prior to this recording, he didn't even has a guitar of his own, achieving his technical brilliancy and astounding compositional chops by borrowing scrappy guitars from friends (that is, when he could find one). He did a impressive job transposing the vast musical heritage of Madagascar to the acoustic guitar, with results that can't be rated in words. It's heavenly stuff. I must say that he is the most amazing acoustic guitar player that I've heard in many years. Kudos for Shanachie and Henry Kayser for this release!! MORE D'GARY, PLEASE!!

Living up to its title, this 13-track compilation showcases how Malians are masters of assimilating new ideas and sounds into their own culture. At the crossroads of many ancient trading routes, Mali has always reflected diversity in its music, and Western instrumentation is just the latest addition to the culture. Male and female artists perform acoustically and electrically in various styles like bambara de segou, wassoulou, and n'goni, and the blues is never far away. Whether it is the electric guitar style of Lobi Traore or the country blues equivalent of Issa Bagayoyo's "Fengue," the comparisons to American blues are obvious, and all the singers, placed in a Memphis Soul setting, would show how much of our pop culture is indebted to Malian traditions. This, however, is the roots real deal, alive and flourishing, and as soulful in its own right as anything on the planet. --Derek Rath

I love Hemisphere Records because they do such a great job of picking tracks. I have three of their compilations, and there is not a dud on any of them. But this is my favorite. Not only is there a nice variety of music, from the intensely rhythmic (''Sisinbo'') to the pensive (''Liberia'') to the minimalist (''Ouere Hana''), you can discern how African music influenced American music, and how the Africans have in turn borrowed from us with their own unique twist. The songs are all interesting, and they all bear repeated playing. This is a great introduction to African music, well worth the price. Great job, Hemisphere!

5 out of 5 stars Vital, exciting.......2002-11-21

The editorial review stresses how this music is not far from American blues. This is unnecessary. Since blues was created by Africans who were brought by force to America, why would it surprise anyone that they kept some of the sounds of their African traditions ?
The Malians musicians on this CD do not try to sound American. They try to create within Malian tradition, using either modern or traditional instruments. I love most of the songs, and most of the artists. Ami Koita and Kagbe Sidibe are my favorites, but the others are great too.
the music is happenning, it is energetic, rhythmic, and full of life. I saw that even people who have no special interst in African music are attracted to these sounds, so I recommend it to everyone !

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars No Longer Lost, music now passed on.......2004-12-28

On April 7 2005 a new thing will happen. From all over the US, from Africa, and from Europe, black banjo players, black fiddlers, black drummers, black dancers, black guitar players, players of these instruments African ancestors and cousins, and scholars and others who want to preserve and extend the music will gather at Appalachian State University in Boone NC for the first, but not last, Black Banjo Then and Now Gathering. Young and baby boomer Black banjo players and fiddlers will join remaining elders from Virginia and North Carolina playing the music that is on this record. This music will be revived, and expanded.

Over the years before the commercial recording industry and most folklorists tended to overlook Black string band music and focused either on Black religious music or guitar and piano blues. Often, the commercial recording companies would only release Black fiddling or string band music even by stars like Lonnie Johnson or the Mississippi Sheiks under phony names as white string band music.

These recordings are the little tiny tip of the iceberg of great Black old time music from Virginia recorded mainly from the 1930s until the 1960s. We have old time five string banjo players, tenor banjoists, guitarists of several types, even accordinian making blues, dance music, story songs, and music to dance to. This music come from Africa into America is played on African instruments like the banjo, or the fiddle which Blacks in this country picked up even before the banjo became popular because it resembled African bowed instruments many of the slaves knew.

This music is at the root of what white old time music became, and was also at the root of what became the blues, and even the dance music of Jazz. This is a delightful record. The only regret is that each performer here recorded for one or two songs we want for an entire album or two.
