Customer Reviews:
Welcome to "alternative" classical music!.......2007-02-19
It's wonderful to hear three such talented musicians put together a collection of non-classical music on revered instruments. This is not "The Yo-yo Ma Show" with two other guys! The music is varied but the performances are great and -- in some cases, e.g. Appalachia Waltz -- fantastic. I was driving the first time I heard the title piece and immediately started sobbing and had to pull over; it was that beautiful! This would be a good CD choice for children to listen to, as it gives a fine exposure to the amazing sounds that the three instruments can make when in the right hands.
It's Yo-Yo so it's Exquisite.......2007-02-12
Yo-yo Ma has never been content to stick with the standard cello classics. Of course he has recorded the classics - the magnificent Bach Cello Suites (incredible and the visual DVD only enhances the effect), Vivaldi, Beethoven, Faure, Dvorak, etc. His evolution as an artist is an on-going process, thus there's Yo-Yo playing Tango (Astor Piazzolla), Yo-Yo playing Jazz (Claude Boling), Yo-yo playing Brazilian music or John Williams. And now we have the Apalachia Waltz, a beautiful, virtuoso and haunting piece.
I, too, found many of the sounds unique. For a real experience, listen in a darkened room with a pair of superior earphones - the things you pick up will shock. I literally turned my head several times, convinced that the artist was in the room.
As one reviewer noted, this is not supposed to be the rustic sound one might imagine or (the reverse) simply an intellectual exercise. The artist (with able assistance) seems to draw on some kind of inner reserve and literally pour his soul into his newest project. I, for one, applaud this widening of the boundaries between genres and hope that it continues.
Let's not forget the other artists, particularly Meyer. Many times the celebrity saps all the attention leaving a wake of sore feeling in their wake. Ma has always been one to give credit where credit is due and in this case it is due to those who ably assisted him. My grade - A
Love it- great for weddings.......2007-01-24
I used this and Appalachian Journey for my wedding music. I used Track 2 (Appalachian Waltz) as my entry music. The rest I just had playing on a cd player as background music while my guests were waiting on me. It was perfect for our outdoor Fall wedding. Hearing track 2 always brings the memory of our beautiful day flooding back.
Stellar album.......2006-11-10
This disc is top-notch in all respects. The playing is great by Ma and O'Conner for sure, but the bass work is awesome. Meyer is as good a player as there is in the world at the present time in my opinion. I am a cellist and bassist and find it difficult to believe that some of the things he does are possible. If you like top quality string playing, order this album today.
**Superb**.......2006-07-19
I absolutely love this album -- the music resonates with one's soul. Even if you don't have a cello fetish as I, you can't go wrong with this album. It offers a wonderful range from adagio to allegro.....A true musical feast. I especially enjoy Butterfly's Day Out and First Impressions. Dolce...

Daniel O'Donnell - Greatest Hits.......2006-02-23
I saw Daniel O'Donnell in Branson last November for the first time. I was very impressed with his style of singing and the ease with which the songs flowed from him. This album captures his style very well. Daniel O' Donnell is like a Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams others like them all rolled into one. The music is very relaxing and enjoyable.
I play it over and over ..........2006-01-20
I am over 50 and came from another country over ten years ago. I did not know who Daniel O' Donnell was when I purchased this CD set. But once I started to listen to the CDs, I could not stop. I absolutely loved them and play them over and over and over... Every time I listen to these songs, there is a warm and wonderful feeling inside me. I love his voice, the way he sings, and all the songs he selected. I would like to give these two CDs 6 stars.
Daniel O'Donnel.......2005-09-27
Twenty six of the most beautiful pieces of nostalgic music by one of my very favorite artists. What a bargain! My wife and I play it over and over. Great Ballroom dancing music, even for one not very adept, but inspired. Every piece is a winner. You will be transformed into a mellow mood. Perhaps more so if you are a little bit more mature.
IRELAND.......2005-09-11
I ordered this CD for my mother-in-law, who is from Balleyconnely, Ireland. She absolutely loved it. His voice is absouletly georgous and the songs are outstanding.
O.K. for people unable to recognize weak voices. .......2005-06-24
I listened to this and saw this guy on PBS. It amazes me how people are able to make a career out of a voice that shouldn't even make it into your local church choir. Very week, airy, and lacking any sense of vitality or resonance. But hey, it is fine for elevators and department stores.

Album Description
Spirited new sounds from across the sea to the shores of the New Land. From the first colonists to the American Revolution and the birth of our republic Hesperus Early Music Ensemble's music reflects a time of new ideas, freedom and vitality. In town and village, parlor and ballroom, from the Appalachians to the great concert halls hear the musical pulse of early American music performed on a wide variety of folk and early music instruments. Includes: lively country-dance tunes, evocative Shape Note Hymns, old time Appalachian fiddle tunes, graceful European parlor music, French cotillions, divisions and improvisations. Introduction -The English Colonies in America were a patchwork-not just of territories whose boundaries became state lines, but of people from different places and classes with widely different values and experiences. This recording presents music from that patchwork; from England, the Colonial homeland; Scotland and Ireland, the homes of the largest groups of immigrants outside England; and France, the ally of the Patriots, and music written in the United States. More recordings by HESPERUS from Maggie's Music are Celtic Roots featuring Scottish fiddler, Bonnie Rideout and Early American Roots. Hesperus Ensemble is THE sought after musical group for period music that is both authentic, and most important fun, lively and spirited. They are frequent performers at the Smithsonian's Institute of American Music and can be heard on the soundtrack or the Paramount film with Johnny Depp entitled Sleepy Hollow! Excerpts from liner notes:2.A Set of English Country Dance Tunes: Maiden Lane, Jack O'Lent, Chestnut, Bonny Broom - The visionary London music publisher John Playford first published his English Dancing Master in 1651. It was reprinted 18 times over the next 77 years and is still popular today. 3. Parting Friends/Primrose - These tunes have come down to us in choral arrangements called shape-note hymns .

GREAT!.......2007-05-20
This cd travels everywhere with me and you can easily imagine a ball at Monticello given by Mr. Jefferson when you hear it.
Try not to daydream too much while driving as i had done several times..lol..it's hard not to with this cd..:)
Perfect for a colonial reenactment or party.
A relaxing journey into our Colonial past.......2006-03-16
I bought this CD to provide me with another dimension to my studies of period events. It truly contains a wealth of music, and takes it place as an important addition to my musical library. Living in the Mt Vernon area, I often travel with the CD playing while visiting historical places, and it provides a wonderful companion to "set the mood" for the myriad locations in the area. The quality of the sound is remarkable, the musicians superb, and the breadth of song selection provides a musical landscape for the period. Highly recommended!!
Fantastic!.......2004-03-04
I first heard the "Colonial America" CD by Hesperus when I visited Monticello recently (the home of Thomas Jefferson) where they were playing the songs in the gift shop. Imagine my dismay to find that only one cassette tape was left of the fabulous music of Hesperus; however, that tape held me spell-bound all the way home, from Virginia to North Carolina.
It was an incredible journey from the past that has stayed with me since, and every day I drive that one hour back and forth to work. This music has changed everything about the trips, and I can't wait for more.
Thanks to Amazon.com I was able to buy all three CD's, including "Early American Roots," "Colonial America" and the incredible "Celtic Roots" with the most beautiful violas imaginable.
Thank you Hesperus! Please play more!
Cold Mountain type music that's great.......2003-11-15
Novels and movies like Cold Mountain, Oh Brother Where Art Thou? and Song Catchers are showing the growing interest in traditional music and this recording hits the mark. It is music from the days of early America--the time when the first colonists come to America. You can hear the fiddle playing tunes still popular in the Appalachian mountains today and also hear shape note music arranged by Hesperus as wonderful instrumentals. The music takes you to a time when folks were making music in their homes-before TV, before the internet! This recording is good for teachers or educational purposes too- with informative liner notes. All the music is played on folk and early music instruments and it's lively and an enjoyable listen.

As on Another Country (1992) and The Old Plank Road (2002), the venerable Irish acoustic band celebrates the shared sources of Celtic music and America's Appalachian folk/old-timey/bluegrass canon. That several of the guest players are veterans of all three sets lends a note of continuity to the palpable joy of discovery that fairly leaps from every track. Highlights are non-stop, but Allison Moorer's doom-laden vocal on "Hick's Farewell" raises goose-flesh, as does Emmylou Harris' "Lambs In The Greenfield," while Don Williams' treatment of an old Scottish ballad, "Wild Mountain Thyme," reveals a sturdy, unsentimental masculinity. The Chieftains are generous hosts throughout, often taking a back seat so their collaborators may shine. A poignant note: harpist and multi-instrumentalist Derek Bell, a longtime Chieftains member, died just after the Plank Road sessions were completed. That these were destined to be among his final recordings makes them all the more worthy of treasuring. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
Great second set of roots music from "The Plank Road Sessions".......2006-04-17
Here we go again. This time around, I think the CD is highlighted by one of country's greatest living legends and one of bluegrass music's greatest young acts. That would be "Wild Mountain Thyme" by gentleman Don Williams and "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy" by Nickel Creek. There are some great pipe tunes on this one as well. Once again we have some themes which seem to exude Appalachia whereas others have a "Northerly" feel. Highly recommended.
Chieftains Merge Irish & Bluegrass Influences.......2005-03-22
This follow-up to 2002's DOWN THE OLD PLANK ROAD doesn't deviate from that album's successful formula of combining traditional Irish music with bluegrass and old timey country music.
Highlights include Tim O'Brien's foot-stomping rendition of "Shady Grove, John Prine's plaintive "The Girl I Left Behind," Ricky Skaggs' "Talk About Suffering/Man of the House" and Nickel Creek's performance of the centuries' old "Raggle Taggle Gypsy."
Several of these songs were not originally recorded for this album. "Fishmerman's Hornpipe/The Devil's Dream," which features the lightning fingers of Doc Watson, was recorded in 1980-81. Four other tracks (9-12) were recorded in 1992, presumably during the sessions for the 1992 release ANOTHER COUNTRY.
Overall, this is a thoroughly satisfying album from Ireland's best ambassadors of Irish music. [Running time 55:06] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Way Down The Old Plank Road.......2003-12-09
Both "Plank Road" CDs are great for fans of Irish/Old Time/Country music.
Highlights on this one, for me, include John Hiatt's version of the Uncle Dave Macon song Jordan is a Hard Road, and Doc Watson with the Chieftains.
The Nickle Creek version of Raggle Tagle Gypsy doesn't do it for me -- I've been spoiled by listening to the Planxty version for years.
All in all a great listen, with an interesting historical connection.
further is better.......2003-10-01
I found the first cd by the chieftains recorded in Nashville to lack a cohesiveness. It also, in my opinion, suffered from the excess of having a 10+ minute instrumental song at the end that seemed to drone on and on. This one "works" better for me and is entertaining and enjoyable from start to finish. An excellent variety of collaborating artists with everything from the country baritone of Don Williams to the beautiful vocal instrument of Emmylou Harris's voice. Highly recommended for Chieftain and country (real country) music fans alike.
I was surprised that there was no mention of the passing of Derek Bell in the liner notes of the cd. Perhaps a tribute to him will be made in an upcoming cd.
The Chieftains turn out another winner.......2003-09-21
Well, it looks like those old Irish rogues The Chieftains have managed to do it again - take two different but interrelated musical styles, find the best performers in the genre, and pair them up with their group to create a unique and oftentimes brilliant sound. With this take we return to the connection between Irish traditional and American country and bluegrass music, just like their last album, "Down the Old Plank Road" was - in fact, "Further Down the Old Plank Road" is the recording sessions they didn't have room to cram into the first one. And while with some other artists this would seem like an attempt to make money off of work they'd already done, in this case the work is just as high in quality as the first album was, therefore earning itself the merit of being well worth the surprisingly modest price tag.
This album has a wide variety of both Irish and American pieces on it, opening with the old standard "The Raggle Taggle Gypsy", performed with Nickel Creek to stunning results. Next comes the American folk song "Jordan is a Hard Road to Travel" with John Hiatt, and if it weren't for Hiatt's superbly raspy old-time voice this would pass as a traditional dance from back over on the Emerald Isle. Following this upbeat tune comes a mournful Southern song with Allison Moorer, the solemn "Hick's Farewell", her voice backed quietly by Paddy and his boys and attended to by the sorrowful wailing of Matt Molloy's flute. "Shady Grove" with Tim O'Brien has lyrics that are very American in nature but a tune that, like much of the material on this album, could have come right out of Ireland itself.
The incomparable John Prine accompanies The Chieftains on "The Girl I Left Behind", employing his once-twangy but now warmer and deeper voice to a song that sounds like a lot of his other work - not a bad thing, mind you. The following set with Jerry Douglas contains the Irish tunes "Rosc Catha Na Mumhain" and "The Wild Irishman", both played superbly, as well as an unexpected treat - "The Arkansas Traveler", undoubtedly one of the best-known old-time folk songs that transforms the track from a set of Celtic tunes to a sort of Irish hoedown, as the liner notes put it. After that comes a superbly sad/sweet Irish song, "Lambs in the Greenfield", played with a past Chieftains collaborator Emmylou Harris, to lovely results. In the space of Band 8 Joe Ely shows up with his roguishly rambling voice, singing two tunes that suit his demeanor well - "The Moonshiner" and "I'm a Rambler".
Country legend Don Williams turns up on this album to sing that beautiful old Irish ballad, "Wild Mountain Thyme" with his virtually-trademark deep country voice that gives the classic air a new dimension. Chet Atkins plays on "Chief O'Neill's Hornpipe", which if memory serves was actually recorded back on The Chieftains' first bluegrass/country endeavor, "Another Country", and could be considered the single cheap shot on the album, even though the collaboration is still very high quality. Band 11 contains Carlene Carter's "Bandit of Love" from 1980, sung by the composer and The Chieftains' own "The Cheatin' Waltz", the former taking up a much longer time slot than the latter. The famous Nitty Gritty Dirt Band gives a spirited performance of "The Squid-Jiggin' Ground", a lively little song rather peculiar in subject but catchy in tune, its words having been set to the Irish Larry O'Gaff's Jig by immigrants to Newfoundland, Canada.
Patty Loveless delivers a wailing rendition of "Three Little Babes", an anguish-filled variant of an old English air sung in the Appalachian Mountains. On track 14 Doc Watson plays a sprightly hornpipe popular on both sides of the Atlantic, "The Fisherman's Hornpipe", followed by another famous tune, "Devil's Dream." Long-time friend of The Chieftains Ricky Skaggs lays down another soulful Southern song, "Talk About Sufferin'", written in the gospel singing tradition of the American southeast. The final tune, "The Lily of the West", has been sung by The Chieftains on a past album, "The Long Black Veil", in collaboration with Mark Knopfler. But sung here to a different tune with somewhat altered lyrics by Rosanne Cash, Johnny "The Man in Black" Cash's daughter, the song takes on an entirely different feel, to my ears less appealing than Knopfler's rendition but still enjoyable.
All in all, "Further Down the Old Plank Road" is anything but an attempt to administer one last whack to a long-dead horse, to paraphrase the liner notes of "Water from the Well" (also a great album). Even though American music is the predominate style on the album, it's still a real treat for Chieftains fans and a great listen for any fan of traditional Irish, bluegrass, or country music, or any of the performers above for that matter. Highly recommended!

One of the finest in its genre.......2007-06-28
Music was a constant in the Leahy family's lives growing up in Lakefield, Ontario, and they honed their skills playing rural fairs and weddings in the 1970s and '80s. That must be why eight of the Leahy brothers and sisters make their music seem so effortless. Likewise, it must have something to do with their seeming delight in the craft; to see or hear them play is to witness a group of talented musicians who truly love what they're doing.
That sound and passion comes through clearly on their self-titled debut album, which years since its release remains one of the best examples of spirited Celtic music.
Don't let the Narada label fool you. Once equated with wispy background music, Narada has since made an effort to remake its image with a strong Celtic traditional base. Leahy is a fine example.
The all-instrumental album has 10 tracks of some of the finest traditional tunes I've heard. Each is played with masterful aplomb, with a Cape Bretony feel which only strengthens my conviction that Canada is home to the new generation of Celtic master musicians. The strongest element of a strong family group is fiery Donnell Leahy, who burns through many of the tracks with a fierce kind of fiddling seldom paralleled. When he's not busy setting fire to his strings and blurring the fingerboard with wild grace and grace notes, he slows down for soulful, passionate melodies with a lush Gypsy spirit.
The fiddle is Leahy's focus, so if you don't like the instrument, don't buy the album. Besides Donnell, brothers Doug and Angus also add fiddle layers to the tunes. The band also features brother Frank on drums and sisters Erin on keyboards, Siobheann on bass, Maria on acoustic guitar and mandolin, and Agnes on percussive stepdancing. Together, they create a package of many moods, from the biting "Cape Breton Medley" and melancholy "The Coulin" to the frenzied/mellow "Czardas" and whirlwind "The Call to Dance." The album kicks off with the potent "B Minor," with powerful fiddle solos overtop solid keyboard and backing musicianship, which sets the tone for all that follows.
Pick this one up. It's a hint of the future of Celtic music.

This got me started!.......2006-11-06
What a treat. I enjoy this CD from first note to last. It's upbeat and cheerful, with music that let's my mind wander into very real imagry. The first five pieces alone make the CD worth the investment. But the entire package is a delight, and a monument to the musicians behind it. MacBrides is a wonderful rolicking storm of sound, and Call to the Dance won't let your feet or your head rest until the last note plays.

From an original act of eleven (eleven!) Canadian brothers and sisters, the current core of nine siblings keeps the Leahy family tradition alive in music and song. Featured is fiery fiddling virtuoso Donnell Leahy, with brothers Doug and Angus also on fiddle and sister Erin keeping pace and setting the tone with delightfully intricate keyboard accompaniments. Most of the tunes are traditional, but the underpinnings are decidedly modern - jazzy piano with bass, guitar and trap set. If you decide to get up and start dancing to this lively music, you might not be alone; Agnes Leahy adds to the percussion with her own step dancing, which the group regards as way of making music, not just something to be performed to music. Cool! I've always thought of dance that way, too. There's strength in numbers, and this album proves it. Leahy's love for their material is obvious, and their enthusiasm--multiplied ninefold--is infectious. Listen to this album and you'll be grinning from ear to ear. Truly a fun listening experience! Leahy has since put out two other albums that I'm aware of: "Lakefield" and "In All Things." I, for one, can't wait for more!
FANTASTIC!.......2005-06-12
I saw Leahy in concert at Milwaukee's Irish Cultural Center. The experience is beyond words. We were clapping, yelling, and dancing in our seats! That prompted me to buy their first album and I was not disappointed. The musicianship is terrific and the selection unbeatable. I've listened to it many, many times and it never grows old. Thanks Leahy!
The talent is palpable from the first note .......2005-05-10
The watershed moment of Celtic music hitting the American mainstream in the mid-1990s had mixed results. The genre of Celtic music has many aspects and to each their own, a good Celtic album should comprise mostly minor tunes. These tunes should be well-layered classics, obscure, and suitable contemporary favorites. The Leahy rendition of "O'Dowd's Favorite," "King of the Fairies," "McBrides," and "Jenny's Chickens," are outstanding examples. As a fiddler I have played the classics literally hundreds of times and still am spellbound by the melodic ambuscade put forth by Leahy with their piano, fiddle, drums, acoustic guitar, and bass accompaniment. The four major tune-based songs should have been cut, and the solid six remaining would more than carry the album.

Country Serenity.......2007-05-07
I have nearly all of Phil Coulter's CD's and I love them all. I could always tell from the titles of the CD's what kind of music they would contain. With Country Serenity, however, this was not the case. There are only about 3 songs I would consider country, maybe not even that many. I wasn't looking for twangy country western stuff, because I know Coulter is very conservative and right on in his choices but most of them seemed to come from the pop genre, which I would never buy. Needless to say I was very disappointed.

The artist himself calls this project "the inevitable next step for a bluegrass singer-songwriter in his mid-40s named O'Brien," but in this description O'Brien sells himself short. It's only the "inevitable next step" for a musician who is passionate about his craft and his culture, conscientious about his music's deep roots, diligent in their exploration, and bold enough to celebrate them. O'Brien organizes a sort of family reunion that brings together Irish folk, its Appalachian old-time son, and its bluegrass grandson. Like with any family, all of these musical generations enjoy many shared traits and these similarities are brilliantly accented across 16 diverse yet related songs. O'Brien taps a number of resources, ranging from traditional Irish musicians like fiddler Frankie Gavin and wind player Seamus Egan to bluegrass stalwarts like Earl Scruggs, Del McCoury, Stuart Duncan, and Jerry Douglas to modern old-time enthusiasts such as David Grier and Dirk Powell to new-acoustic pickers like Darol Anger, Edgar Meyer, and Mike Marshall. O'Brien even enlists Guy Clark as lyricist for "John Riley" and unveils a marvelous original talking blues ("Talkin' Cavan") done in Dylanesque style. The result is an album that is both ambitious and comfortably traditional. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
An international treasure.......2005-03-23
Seriously, this recording (and it's follow up "Two Journeys") are treasures.
ALL of the real heavies from both Celtic music and bluegrass are on this record. Seriously, from Earl Scruggs to Altan- they're all here. Others have attempted the same Celtic/bluegrass hybrid but THIS is the best.
My favorite track is the utterly chilling story of Irish- American soldier of fortune "John Riley." The music was written by Tim with lyrics by Guy Clark and features REALLY SCARY slide guitar from Kelly Joe Phelps.
And then when you realize that it's a true story....
Every schoolkid in America (or Ireland) should get to hear this recording.
And then be sure to check out "Two Journeys."
A terrific collection of songs and performances.......2003-03-12
Hard to add much to the reviews already written. You will definitely like this CD alot. O'Brien draws on major talent from both sides of the Atlantic to assist him on this project and almost every cut is superb (the rest are just real good). Tim O'Brien is in fine voice and his harmonies with Del McCoury, Kathy Mattea, and others are right on the money. One of the most impressive aspects of this project is the quality of Tim O'Brien's songwriting. I'm sure "A Mountaineer is Always Free" is destined to become a bluegrass/folk classic and his "Talkin' Cavan" is a great (and hilarious) tale of genealogy tourism gone awry.
Taking a Chance on Tim.......2002-12-03
It's a truism that if you don't try new things you'll never know whether you like them. Tim O'Brien was a new artist to me when I got this album, and on the first play I wasn't sure whether I'd made a good choice, but it grows on you. There's authentic folk music ("Wagoner's Lad"), original music successfully imitating folk (the chilling "John Riley," which is *not* the song you remember Joan Baez singing--this one focuses on a little-known aspect of the 1846-7 war with Mexico, and if I didn't *know* it had been written expressly for this collection, I'd have thought O'Brien dredged it up from some obscure traditional songbook), instrumentals and "talkin' blues" ("Talkin' Cavan," which reminds me a bit of "Alice's Restaurant"). Worth your listen.
Bluegrass Music Meets Its Celtic Roots.......2001-10-14
I first encountered Tim O'Brien twenty years ago as the vocalist/fiddle player in the bluegrass band Hot Rize. On this solo outing (which he dedicates to Hot Rize guitarist Charles Sawtelle), O'Brien takes us on a musical journey to his Celtic roots with a wonderful collection of both original and traditional songs.
The album opens with the traditional "Ireland's Green Shore" and is followed by "A Mountaineer Is Always Free," an O'Brien original who lifted the title from the West Virginia state motto. The title track is a rip-roaring original fiddle tune. "Wagoner's Lad" is a lovely duet with Kathy Mattea. One of my favorite tracks is "Talkin Cavan" which features O'Brien on guitar doing a terrific take on Bob Dylan as he tells of his 1998 trip to Ireland to find the old O'Brien farm cottage in County Cavan. Each tune is proof of the musical connection between Irish and American folk music. And with guest musicians like Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Seamus Egan (whistles, bodhran), Todd Phillips (bass) and Jerry Douglas (Hawaiian guitar), the music is nothing short of spectacular. Earl Scruggs even shows up on the instrumental medley "Lord McDonald/Cumberland Gap."
If you like Tim O'Brien, Celtic music, bluegrass, folk or any combination of the above, you'll find much to cherish on this album. Total running time: 63:10 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Brave New World uncovered by the Crossing ..........2000-10-30
As a fan of both celtic traditional and bluegrass music I was wary of a CD claiming to be a hybrid - too often it means an unsatisfactory compromise where original flavours become watered down and insipid. I need not have worried - Tim O'Brien has produced one of the most amazing and rewarding musical journeys I've followed for some time. Not only do the players from the two traditions blend instinctively and harmoniously but the tracks , mostly songs, are marvellous vehicles for new and exciting directions. There are superb performances all round, vocally from O'Brien with guests Paul Brady, Maura O'Connell, Kathhy Mattea, Del McCoury etc and musicians Altan, Frankie Gavin, Jerry Douglas, Earl Scruggs, Seamus Egan and a host of others and the sound is fresh, acoustic and vital, requiring no production gimmicks or effects. Standout songs for me personally are "Mountaineer is Always Free", "Lost Little Children", "Wandering" and "John Riley" although there is not a weak track on the CD. It is obvious that for Tim O'Brien this has been a labour of love. If you like acoustic music, from any tradition, either side of the Atlantic, you'll love it. Several of my friends have bought it on my recommendation and agree it is brilliant.

Since it was released a decade ago, A Woman's Heart, a survey of Irish female singers and instrumentalists, has become one of the best-selling Celtic music albums ever, and volume 2 sold almost as well. The present incarnation reunites the original participants but also includes Irish-American voices. Dolly Parton's "In The Sweet By And By" and Alison Krauss's "Down To The River To Pray" recall an old-time Appalachian tent revival. Accordionist Sharon Shannon and The Wild Bullocks resemble a hip ceili big-band on "The White Strand Sling." The Corrs obsess over an attractive deceiver on "I Know My Love," while Sinead O'Connor is tenderness incarnate on "This Is To Mother You." But Dolores Keane's rendition of "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" is beyond poignant. Her silky alto, flanked by a mournful cello, two male singers, and a distant children's choir, imbues a classic anti-war ballad with renewed urgency and pathos. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
An amazing CD!.......2005-06-27
I was on a tour of Southern Ireland last year, and the tour guide played this as we drove from Dublin to Cork. The first chance I got, I went into a music store and purchased a copy for myself.
The beautiful ballad by Sinead O'Conner is worth the price of admission alone. It is a song to play when you need comforting, and a reminder that everything will indeed get better. The tour guide shared with me that he purchased it for that song alone.
Everytime I play it my mind goes back to that tour and watching the beautiful green hills and small villages of Ireland go by.
Buy this one...you won't regret it.
Moving.......2005-02-05
A friend gave me this last week. It's hard to stop playing it. "This Is To Mother You," "Fields of Gold," and "Down To The River To Pray" are especially moving. I highly recommend this CD.
A Beautifully Satisfying Listening Experience.......2004-09-22
A Woman's Heart 1 and 2 introduced me to a number of wonderful Celtic artists, most notably Dolores Keane. (Like "Mary29" I was also prompted to go out and buy as many of her CD's as I could find.) Though I thoroughly enjoyed all of the songs on "A Decade On" I was completely blown away by "Mystic Lipstick" (written by Christy Moore and sung here by Maura O'Connell), quite possibly the most hauntingly beautiful song I've ever heard. I have to believe the woman in this song is actually Ireland ... "She keeps fools for counsel, she keeps the wig and gown. The cloth and the bloody warfare, the stars and stripes and crown. And still we pray for a better day now, God willing it's for the best. But I've just seen the harp on the penny with a dollar on (...)." The imagery and heartbreak of the lyrics are conveyed perfectly by Maura O'Connell's beautiful interpretation and voice. Worth every penny for this song alone, this is one CD that I'm going to be playing over and over. (And I'll soon be having some Maura O'Connell CD's to keep my Dolores Keane CD's company :-)
An Extraordinary Collection.......2004-05-07
I learnt of this album by listening to RadioCelt.com, and put it on my Christmas wish list on the the buoyant strength of "This is to Mother You" by Sinead O'Connor and the astonishing conviction of "Down to the River to Pray", by Alison Krauss.
I was pleased when my wife gave it to me... until I listened to it. THEN I was completely blown away. The moods range from tender to playful, yet each and every song bears an insight into the sorrows and joys not only of being a woman, but of being a member of the human race. It's an intriguing mix of original work, traditional songs, and covers of other artists' work. Well worth buying!
Graceful.......2004-04-05
I first heard this CD on National Public Radio, possibly on Fresh Air. The pieces they played were beautiful, and on that basis alone, I ordered Vol. 1 and 2 of A Woman's Heart. You will find a wide range of Celtic music, some romantic, some almost to a dance beat. This is trully music from a woman's heart, not trying to out-rock the men. Enjoy it while it is still available. it's so tender, it may go out of style.

Older songs........2006-12-23
The songs on this cd are very old and have that old hollywood sweet type of feel to them. Good for an older couple or a very old fashioned couple.
Not what I wanted-Not even close........2005-07-08
If there is such a thing as Irish country music, then this is the worst form of it. I was expecting instrumentals or something appropriate to play at a wedding. There is not one good song on this CD and there is definitely nothing here that can be played at a wedding. The title is definitely misleading.
The Vow by Druidstone is a much better choice.......2002-01-02
While I was doing research for my book - The Traditional Irish Wedding - I wanted to be able to recommend as much authentic Irish music as possible for both the ceremony and the reception.
The book came about because our daughter wanted a celebration reflective of her roots; we ended up with all Irish music for the ceremony, including a Celtic Mass. The same was true of the reception. There is so much great Irish music available that the problem for most couples will be deciding what to include and what to leave out. Except for The Irish Wedding Song and My Wild Irish Rose, it's my opinion that this particular CD is misleading as to its name and content.
Irish Wedding Songs.......2001-06-23
Yuck! My fiance is from Ireland and this is exactly the type of "Irish" music we want to avoid at our wedding. We don't want the family on this side of the Atlantic to get the wrong impression. Look elsewhere, this is no bargin.
The Title is Misleading.......2000-11-15
I purchased the CD for 1 song, The Irish Wedding Song. It is beautiful. Outside of this track, there are maybe 2 other songs worth listening to, When You Were Sweet Sixteen and I Love You Because. This should not be billed as an Irish CD. Very little Irish about it. It is more country than Irish and has very little to do with a wedding.
